Community Council Welcome Banteer Village Roads Works
Banteer, Lyre, Nadd, and Districts Community Council welcome the news that Cork County Council will, in the next 2 or 3 weeks, carry out works to improve some of the existing road from the railway road crossing to the railway station entrance gate, and further if the funding allows.
The long term plan is to resurface/drain the Railway road and Clonmeen road and the Community Council have also requested that remaining work be included on the 2025 roads programme as the Railway road, Clonmeen road and some of the Kanturk road are in extremely poor state. The local community council has been lobbying for resurfacing, drainage works etc. on these roads for the last 5 or 6 years.
These roads are subject to major traffic volumes each day of the year versus other roads in the Duhallow area, and the road surface has been patched many many times.
Nadd village is due a 2nd flashing speed sign on the Cork side of the village, and a speed cushion to control speed via the village.

Since beginning in 2013, IRD Duhallow’s business awards have become a staple in the local calendar. What was a humble night has turned into an elegant production complete with dinner and entertainment, with this year marking the 10th such event. The awards were missed in 2020 and 2021, but returned in 2022 with a bang that has echoed since.
The MC bar has been set high, especially with Marty Morrissey and Alan Shortt making appearances in recent years, but this year, Reggie Blackrock is sure to leap it.

Millstreet Community School News
Footballers off to a Flyer Senior Hurlers Extend Unbeaten Run
Mallow was the venue for the hurlers opening county championship game against Douglas C.S. Millstreet were looking to extend their five game unbeaten run from last year, and in the end, they did so emphatically. Millstreet opened up a 6 point to 1 lead inside the first ten minutes and from there they never looked back.. A brace of goals for Hugh Keane on either side of half time left a spirited Douglas side with little chance of coming back. This coupled with the fine free taking form that captain Cian Mc Caul was in on the day put the result beyond doubt early in the second half. Millstreet ran out 14 point winners on a final score line of 3-17 to 1-9.
Our under 17 footballers got their Munster championship campaign off to an emphatic start on Friday 20th of September. A sun drenched Carrigtwohill provided the venue for the opening game and M.C.S wasted no time in taking full advantage of the ideal conditions. Impressive performances from Colin Healy and Ryan Kelleher in particular kept the score board ticking over throughout and with M.C.S netting a massive 9 times during the encounter, Carrigtwohill were left with little opportunity to capitalise on their home advantage. The game ended 9-13 to 3-7 in favour of Millstreet who now move on to round two.
World Championships Runners-Up!
Millstreet Community Schools Golf team represented Ireland in the world championships held in Edinburgh between the 16th and 18th of September finishing an impressive second in the world! We saw five outstanding performances from five phenomenal Golfers over three days, with Oran Kiely finishing a superb 5th place overall and coming home in a fantastic fourth spot in the Juniors. Evelyn McCarthy put in a superb performance finish top in the girls' Stableford section!

Go Eddie; Motivation for us all.
By ALICE O’BRIEN
Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket
Duhallow man, or more specifically, Banteer man, Eddie Dunbar has crossed many a finish line in his cycling career. For years he has started races and tours, turning pedal after pedal since beginning his cycling career with the infamous Danny. But this September he crossed two finish lines in first place when he won two stages in the Vuelta, one of the most gruelling three week races in the world across Spain’s mountain terrain. He crossed the line both times to cheers, to waiting glory, to media channels who wanted to interview him, to team-mates who wanted to pat his back and to a storm of excitement. And well deserved it all was. He stood on the podium with modest pride in typical Eddie fashion.
But, for all that glory Eddie has worked long and hard. Cycling out of Banteer many a cold wet morning, head down to shelter from the wind as he started on a long lonely spin. Did Eddie know on those cold wet mornings, as a young boy that all his efforts would yield such a reward? The answer is no. So, why did he keep going? What motivates people to keep going? To keep the motivation alive time after time?.
There are two types of motivation. intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from within, extrinsic motivation comes from an external factor. We need both types to drive our actions. To be intrinsically motivated means that you carry out an action because you have a passion, you find it rewarding. Extrinsically motivated action is carried out with a reward in mind, a prize or even a pay-off, you carry out the action not because you love it, but because you expect to
get something.
For most of us, intrinsic motivation is what gets us started, it is what helps us to identify our passions and pursue them. Extrinsic motivation is what keeps us going, the reward or the idea of the reward makes it easier to continue.
I don’t know what motivated Eddie- we will have to ask him. But I can guess that he is glad he kept going. I do know this though- no matter how successful he becomes, he will be the same modest, friendly man he has always been and Duhallow- especially Banteer are very proud.

We are delighted to welcome Deirdre Fallon to the New Leaf Health Store. Deirdre is a highly experienced counsellor, specializing in the management of chronic pain. In this interview, she shares her insights on her approach and how she helps clients.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your work?
Thank you! I’m excited to join the New Leaf Health Store team. I’m a counsellor who focuses on helping people manage chronic pain. I
work both online and in person, with a particular interest in pain conditions such as back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, and repetitive strain injury. Chronic pain is often misunderstood, but with the right approach, it can be managed effectively.
Chronic pain can be incredibly frustrating. How do you help clients manage it?
Chronic pain occurs when the brain misinterprets harmless signals from the body as threats. My job is to help clients understand that while their pain is real, it’s often due to how their brain is processing these signals. Once we break down this misunderstanding, we can work together to “unlearn” the pain through techniques like mindfulness, relaxation, and movement reintroduction.
Can you walk us through some of your techniques?
Absolutely. First, I help clients identify triggers—whether physical movements or emotions. Then we use mindfulness and deep breathing to calm the nervous system. If someone has been avoiding certain activities due to pain, I guide them back to those movements safely. The goal is to show the brain there’s no danger, and the pain often reduces as a result.
How can people reach you if they want to learn more?
They can reach me at 0838138628, or visit my website, woodviewcounsellingcork.ie. I’m available online or at New Leaf Health Store in Kanturk, with evening and weekend appointments too.
St. Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament
By TOM DENNEHY
Saint Faustina’s full religious name was Sister Marie Faustina of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Her whole life resolved around the Holy Eucharist. Almost every page of her diary makes reference to the Eucharist. In talking about her life to a friend, she said, “The most solemn moment of my life is the moment I receive Holy Communion and for every Holy Communion I give thanks to the Most Holy Trinity.” (Diary 1804) She had a special relationship with the Eucharist because Jesus gave her a clear understanding of this mystery. She describes it as “the wonderful gift of His presence on Earth.” During Mass, “I thanked the Lord Jesus for having redeemed us and for giving us the greatest of all gifts, the Holy Eucharist”. “You wanted to stay with us, and so you left us yourself in the Sacrament of the altar and you opened wide your mercy to us. You opened an inexhaustible spring of mercy for us, giving us your dearest possession, the Blood and Water that gushed forth from Your Heart” (Diary 1747)
During a Holy Hour of Adoration, St. Faustina saw the institution of the Holy Eucharist. She came to understand that, “At the moment of consecration, the sacrifice was fully consummated. Never in my whole life had I understood this mystery so profoundly as during that hour of Adoration.” (Diary 684)
She asked God to let the world understand the unfathomable mystery and mercy of the Eucharist - “Who will ever conceive and understand the depth of mercy that gushed forth from His Heart? “ It is only in eternity that we will know the great mystery given to
us in Holy Communion. One day we will know what God is doing for us in each mass and what gift he is preparing through it for us. These times of union are a taste of Eternity, she said. Holy Communion was the strength and support of St. Faustina in her everyday struggle of life. The Lord told her; In the Host is the power; it will defend you always. (Diary 616)
death.
A regular experience for St. Faustina was the vision of the Lord Jesus during Holy Mass. Over sixty visions are recorded in her diary. Many times she records seeing the rays of mercy as in the image of the Merciful Saviour coming from the Eucharist at times covering the whole world.
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is Eucharistic. It is an offering of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the Father, in atonement for the sins of the world. Just as in the Mass, we join our offering with Jesus to God the Father.
Promises given by Jesus by praying the Chaplet:
• When this chaplet is said by the bedside of a dying person, God’s anger is placated, unfathomable mercy envelops the soul.
• It pleases me to grant everything they ask of me by saying this chaplet if what they ask is compatible with my will.
• By saying this chaplet, you are bringing humankind closer to Me.
• The souls that say this chaplet will be embraced by My mercy during their life time and especially at the hour of their
• The soul that approaches the fount of Mercy on the Feast of Divine Mercy will be granted complete remission of their sins and punishment.
Saint Faustina was born in Poland in 1905. She came from a poor family and had little education. At the age of seven, she felt drawn to religious life, but her parents did not allow her to enter a convent. After many years, she heard God call her to Himself in a vision of the suffering Christ and she immediately left home for the city of Warsaw. There, in 1926, she joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. As a religious sister, St. Faustina was assigned the simplest tasks, but received extraordinary visions of Jesus. During one of her visions, Jesus instructed her to paint what she saw, which is now known as the image of Divine Mercy. Jesus asked her to keep a record of all these mystical revelations and her writings titled “Divine Mercy in my Soul” have inspired devotion to the Divine Mercy throughout the world. St. Faustina’s legacy is a message of hope and trust in God. She taught us that God’s mercy is infinite and that He is always willing to forgive us, no matter how great our sins are. She was canonized by St. Pope John Paul 11 on April 30th 2000 on Divine Mercy Sunday. Her feast day is October 5th.
