Community Spirit Shines at Dromtarriffe GAA

The Dromtarriffe Community Alert Committee were delighted to welcome Diarmuid Cronin from Muintir Na Tire to Dromtarriffe GAA grounds on Saturday, September 2nd where he laser branded valuable items belonging to members of our community.

Diarmuid was kept busy branding ride-on lawnmowers, power tools, electric bikes, and musical instruments. Garda liaison officers, Garda Kathryn Canty and Garda Clement Sillery, joined and spoke with people about safety and security. On the day, €220 in donations were raised with €165 being donated to Dromtarriffe GAA and €55 being retained by the Dromtarriffe Community Alert Committee for updating community alert signage in the area. We were also treated to a tune by Sadhbh Murphy after her tin whistle was branded.

The Committee would like to thank Mr. Cronin of for donating his time and expertise to brand items, Dromtarriffe GAA for the use of their premises, Garda Kathryn Canty and Garda Clement Sillery for their support and the members of our community who supported this event and brought goods for branding.

Uisce Éireann Unveils Text Alert Service for Cork Residents Uisce Éireann has announced the launch of its brand new free-touse Text Alerts service which will provide water supply updates and information to customers across Cork.

If something occurs affecting the water supply to your home or business, you need to know about it as soon as possible.

The text alert system will be the first time that all of Uisce Éireann’s customers will be able to sign up and receive notifications for their area.

The service provides customers with details of supply interruptions that are expected to last longer than four hours. It will also include details on planned and unplanned outages as well as boil water notices should they be needed to protect public health.

Previously, only vulnerable customers and business customers have been able to avail of a Text Alerts service, with the service now extending to all.

Clubs Receive Charge Points

Well done to Patrick Daly of Kilcorney who came 1st in class for the world championship power lifting in Limerick.

Ballydesmond GAA Club, Buttevant AFC and Coachford AFC throughout the Cork North West constituency have all been approved for the installation of EV charging points at their club facilities and can now progress to the next round of this scheme.

The scheme was open to all sports clubs associated with recognised national governing bodies. 14 clubs in Cork are now eligible to move to the next stage in the process.

50 Years Of Rathmore Gneeveguillla Community Games

On behalf of the committee of Rathmore Gneeveguilla Community Games we would like to thank all the children and coaches that participated in our 50th Anniversary float in last Sunday’s carnival in Gneeveguilla.

The children that took part in the

parade were County, Munster and All Ireland medallists from sporting and cultural events that took place this year. As we approach our end of year, we would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to all our committee members for

their time, committment and hard work throughout the year. Their continued support is essential in keeping the Community Games sport and cultural events going for children aged 6 up to aged 16 in our area. The Final Goodbye

Following his passing on the 4th of August this year, Hugh Murphy’s final leaving from the farmland was followed by family, loved ones, and friends. The cows he had spent years milking came to say their own goodbye to a dear friend.

Freemount Thursday Club Welcomes New Members On Saturday September 7th the Thursday Club had an end of the Summer get together in Cois Abhann and then went on to the Culturlann Variety Show in Newmarket, which was a fabulous mix of the talent of Duhallow- singing, storytelling set and brush dancing and playing musical instruments. Freemount’s Crossfield’s under 18 Ceile Band, who are all Ireland champions from all over Duhallow, had the crowd hopping on their seats.

Continued good luck to the wonderful work of the Comhaltas branch in Freemount. Members of the Thursday club thoroughly enjoyed the night. A few danced to the music of Sheila Fitzgerald.

The Thursday club meets on the second and last Thursday of each month at Cois Abhann, which is at the traffic lights in the village.

Members after doing the exercises play either bingo or cards followed by tea, sandwiches scones and apple tart. During the summer the club’s regular meetings are

suspended and replaced by outings. One of these outings was to Blarney Hotel for scones and retail therapy, followed by a cruise around Cork Harbour or retail therapy finishing up with dinner in the Corbett Court.

On Wednesday September 25th, there will be a Coffee Morning in Cois Abhann for Marymount from 9 to 12.30. Tea and cake on the menu as well as the “caint agus craic”. This is a very worthy cause as Marymount provides help and support for not alone the patients with cancer but also family and friends. On Thursday September 26th there will be a talk from Community Alert about Senior Alert followed by the “Caint agus Craic”.

The value of the Thursday Club is echoed in the words of its members with comments “I missed the Thursday Club during the summer” and “it is great to be back “. Members are from not alone from Freemount but also the adjoining areas such as Liscarroll Churchtown, Tullylease, Lisgriffin and Johnsbridge. This is an opportunity not to be missed as the “crack agus caint” is mighty. New members are welcome. “Ar scath a cheile a mhaireann na daoine”.

Community News Songs Of The Heart in Castlemagner

On October 31st, Castlemagner Community Centre will be the setting for a special fundraising concert featuring the talented Cork musicians Patrick O’Sullivan and his son Conor. This highly anticipated event will raise funds for a unique recording project that has brought together a group of senior citizens who share a passion for music and connection. The project has led to the creation of an album titled Songs Of The Heart, celebrating the joy of togetherness through song.

The project itself was born out of a singing class led by singing coach and teacher Marie Twomey, whose dedication and passion for nurturing voices has helped transform social singing classes into a professional recording project. Marie’s class became a tight-knit community where seniors not only found their voices but rediscovered the joy of gathering, sharing, and connecting with one another.

“The energy in the room when we all sing together is magical,” said one of the participants. “It’s not just about the music—it’s about being part of something bigger, part of a family.”

The album, Songs Of The Heart, is a carefully curated collection of beloved songs, including timeless numbers like “Hurry Hurry Home Love,” Phil Coulter’s emotionally charged “Steal Away,” and the Irish favourite “Far Away In Australia.”

Many of the songs reflect the shared memories, emotions, and life experiences of the group members, with many more surprises to be revealed upon the album’s official release.

Behind the scenes, the music has been carefully arranged and produced by Neil Moylan, ensuring a polished, high-quality sound that captures the heart of the project.

The drumming and percussion on the album are provided by Michael Tobin, adding richness, finesse and depth to each track.

The fundraising concert on October 31st promises to be a night of top-class entertainment, where Cork Musician Patrick O’Sullivan

will bring his trademark blend of traditional and contemporary Irish music to the stage. Doors open at 7:30 pm, with the concert beginning promptly at 8:00 pm. Tickets are priced at €20 and are available from any member of the Sinsir Club or by contacting 0868521808. With limited availability, early purchase is advised to avoid disappointment.

In addition to Patrick O’Sullivan’s performance, attendees can look forward to refreshments served, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the heart of the community. Road Works To Commence on N72 Transport Infrastructure Ireland have approved the appointment of a contractor to commence works on the Meenskeha (Cullen to Clonbanin) pavement improvement scheme.

These works are much anticipated, and aim to be in progress within the next number of weeks.

Poulgorm Banteer Water Outage Another water outage occurred on Thurs 22nd Aug in Banteer and last week also with areas with no water for a number of hours. The Community Council have now received a response from Irish Water re a plan to be implemented and this will be reviewed and responded to and published.

The Fire Rises

It follows former Cumann na mBan member Cáit Browne, who now works as a maid for retired English Major Graham Fitzgerald and his wife Elizabeth in their lavish house. When IRA Captain, Seán O’Brien arrives unexpectedly one night, Cáit is surprised by the return of her old flame. However, he intends to not only reignite one flame but start another…

Embracing the Season: Newmarket’s Vibrant Autumn Festival

The Newmarket Autumn Festival has concluded with resounding success, marking a week of vibrant community spirit and memorable events.

The festival kicked off with a high-energy night at the Rock Bar with a 45 Card Drive, setting the tone for a week filled with excitement and camaraderie. The atmosphere in the West End was electrifying, especially at the Spin City Funfair, which drew crowds with its thrilling rides and lively entertainment.

Family fun was at the forefront of the festivities with the Family Fun Day at the Newmarket GAA pitch.

The day featured an engaging interpub football competition, where Hourigan’s Bar triumphed over the Rock Bar, showcasing local sporting talent and team spirit.

The festival continued with a series of enjoyable events, including the 3 Ball Scramble at the Pitch and Putt Course. Ann Keane, Patrick Kelly, and Ben Murphy emerged as the winners, adding a competitive edge to the week’s activities.

The excitement didn’t end there. Scanlon’s Bar hosted an exhilarating rings competition, with Nancy Lehane taking the top prize. The Histreet Quiz Night was another highlight, attracting enthusiastic participants and creating an engaging atmosphere for all. Darts enthusiasts were treated to an action-packed night at Hourigan’s Bar, where Pat Kelly and Billy Newman claimed victory.

However, the crowning event of the festival was undoubtedly the Music Bingo Night at Hourigan’s Bar. The event was a hit with an

electric atmosphere and a full house enjoying a night of musical fun.

The festival wrapped up with a delightful BBQ at the Rock Bar, where the pleasant weather and great food rounded off a week of celebration and community spirit.

The Newmarket Festival Committee extends heartfelt thanks to all those who contributed to the festival’s success. From those who donated spot prizes and made generous contributions to the volunteers who ensured everything ran smoothly, your support was invaluable in making this year’s festival a memorable experience for all.

Carriganima Fun Run and Walk

Carriganima hosted their Fun Run and Walk on Saturday 31st August; a wonderful way to close out the month and to bring the community together for a great cause. This annual event raised much needed funds for Macroom and Millstreet community hospital.

Participants embarked on a scenic 6km walk taking in the scenery, beautiful landscapes and the history of Carriganima. At the finish line, participants were greeted with medals as a token of their achievement and a well-deserved treat to celebrate their efforts.

‘Changing The Narrative’ Morning In IR

CE Rehabilitation Scheme Supervisor, IRD Duhallow The Changing the Narrative Wellness Morning was held on the 10th September in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket.

The aim of the event was to acknowledge National Recovery Month and World Suicide Day and to provide an outing to those in the local community to spend a morning focusing on taking care of their mental wellbeing. With the event booking out well in advance, there was a large crowd on the day who had gathered to enjoy the wellness morning.

The morning began with everyone receiving a wellness gift bag. The event then kicked off with our first guest speaker Alice O’Brien who is a Cogitative

Behavioural Therapist. She gave a fascinating and relatable presentation on the different thinking styles people can have and focused particularly on the effects of worry. Alice highlighted the methods which can support people to manage worry such as mindfulness, breathing exercise and meditations.

Up next was Dawn Holland from Ganapati School of Yoga who led a relaxing half an hour of guided meditation and breathing exercises, followed by some gentle chair yoga and finished with a body scan.

There was then a short interval for all to enjoy a cuppa and a scone. This also gave people a chance to interact with the local services who provided information stands on the day. These services included ALONE, Grow, Coolmine,

After the break Dolores Tiernan from The Grove Addiction Treatment Centre provided invaluable information and insights into addiction and treatment.

The feuding brothers have made up, they have buried the hatchet, and not in each other. Just in time for them to sell out numerous concerts and make a lot of money. In case you don’t know who Liam and Noel are, they are Oasis, legends of the 1990s.

Sibling relationships are complex, especially as we become adults.

Sibling rivalry and arguments are

not always outgrown in adulthood.

Struggling to get along or managing estrangement from siblings can be very stressful to your life.

Signs of sibling rivalry in adults can include jealously, viewing other siblings as a treat, constant competing or attempt to undermine each other.

Whatever the reason for it, there are things you can do to make it easier for yourself and those around you when it comes to your siblings: • Perceived parental favouritism is often the source of the feeling of rivalry among siblings. So don’t take things personally. Things are not always as you think they seem. They may be many reasons for how your parents treat you and your siblings.

• If you have a sense of competition with your sibling, acknowledge that this may be

Padre Pio - Great Saint of the Eucharist

By TOM DENNEHY One of the greatest saints of the twentieth century was Padre Pio whose feast day we celebrate on September 23rd. His devotion to the Eucharist and the Mass gives us a greater insight into this great sacrifice. Padre Pio has taught us that when we attend Holy Mass, it is not alone a memorial of The Last Supper but also a partaking in the eternal sacrifice made by Jesus for us at Calvary.

Padre Pio suffered the wounds of Christ during the fifty years of his priestly life and experienced a sharing in the pain suffered by Jesus during His passion. This was especially visible to all present during his celebration of Holy Mass.

Padre Pio had an amazing devotion to the Holy Eucharist – during the holy Mass he would be completely united to Jesus in His Passion and Death. He clearly saw Jesus there with him, dying crucified on the cross, and truly and substantially present in the Blessed Sacrament. He would frequently remain in contemplation while holding Jesus in the Eucharist in his hands.

Padre Pio was born in Pietrelcina, Italy, on May 25th 1887, and died in San Giovanni, Rotunda, Italy on September 23, 1968. While the lives of every saint contain many out of the ordinary events, the life of Padre Pio is especially marked by the presence of the supernatural.

Right from his childhood, the young Pio used to see and speak regularly with his guardian angel and this was so natural to him, that he thought everybody else had this same experience.

God gave many amazing gifts to this saint. He had the capacity

to “read souls”- that is, to know ahead of time the sins of those who came to him for confession.

He was able to “bi-locate”- be in two places at the same time, knowing what was going on in faraway places, and doing things in more than one place at the same time. One of the most incredible things that Padre Pio did was during the Second World War. An air raid was planned to bomb the town of San Giovanni Rotunda where Padre Pio was located.

Some of the pilots testified they had seen a Franciscan friar in mid air, right in front of them, signalling to them not to drop any bombs.

Devotion to the Holy Rosary Padre Pio had a great devotion to the rosary, praying as many as twenty rosaries a day. He never left the rosary beads out of his hands. He called the rosary his weapon against all evil and temptations against The Devil who was constantly attacking him.

He loved Our Lady and remained constantly attached to her through the rosary. This invisible thread connects our hearts to that of Mary. The prayer of the rosary was at the heart of his relationship with Heaven. During one of her mystical experiences, the Blessed Mother revealed to Padre Pio, “With this weapon, you will win.”In fact, he constantly recited the rosary and encouraged all to do the same.

His Devotion to Eucharistic Adoration Padre Pio is the patron saint of Eucharistic Adorers because of the many hours he spent in Adoration and was the place he was to be found when his fellow friars were looking for him. He was so happy during his many hours of Adoration that he wrote, “When I am close to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, I feel as if my heart is bursting out of

my chest.” He also tells us to kneel down in humble devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Confide all your needs to Him, along with those of others. Speak to Him with total abandonment, give free rein to your heart and give Him free rein to work in you as He thinks best.

His Priestly life Padre Pio suffered poor health his entire life, offering all his sufferings for the conversion of souls. He survived on a few hours sleep and very little food. His working day lasted 19 hours. During his lifetime he brought thousands back to the faith and was known as the Saint of the Confessional, hearing confessions twelve to fifteen hours per day. He encouraged everyone to pray for the Holy Souls.

He was canonized by Saint John Paul on June 16, 2002. His body, which is in-corrupt, is buried in San Giovanni and is visited by eight million pilgrims each year.

Padre often declared, “After my death, I will do more. My real mission will begin after my death.”

The many miracles and books written of his intercession testify to this.

The devotion to Padre Pio is greater now than ever.

“It’s Gonna Be One Hell Of A Do!” Dromtarriffe GAA Launch Their Mock Wedding Fundraiser

By TADHG CURTIN Dromtarriffe GAA Club were delighted after the fantastic launch of their upcoming Mock Wedding Fundraiser which was held at the Sandpit House on Sep 14th. The big day will be on in the Charleville Park Hotel on Saturday, November 30th. Funds raised will be going to development of a sportsfield.

The following is a message from the club, expressing gratitude to those involved with, and details on, the event: “A huge thank you to Eimear Lane and all at The Sandpit House for hosting, decorating, finger food and sponsoring the Insta frame from Let’s Party Duhallow.
