Newmarket Makes Strides With River Walk

Newmarket Sports & Leisure in collaboration with Coillte has been making slow but steady progress on upgrading our local Island Wood.

Work to date includes:

• Extension of car park on right hand side which has resulted in 10 extra car park spaces.

• New fenced access from Clongeel side across metal bridge ( replacing previous right of way)

• New signage including maps of 3 colour coded trails.

• Additional seating and picnic benches.

• Total resurfacing of upper road from Car Park all the way to the Rock. This was made possible thanks to Cork County Council.

The late Gerard Murphy played a massive role in much of the work to date and was always a big supporter of the iconic Island Wood. In fact, he played a key role in securing some funding for our next phase which includes a complete upgrade of the scenic River Walk.

Due to its proximity to the River, both Inland Fisheries & National Parks and Wildlife Services (as well as Coillte) have been part of the discussions on the new surface. This will be a major project resulting in the River Walk having to be closed for a number

of weeks. It is hoped that further walks will be carried out after this. A community meeting is planned over the coming months where all suggestions will be welcome.
