ADDICTION AND MENTAL HEALTH
IRD Duhallow To Run Addiction Awareness Event
Addiction and mental health issues do not discriminate and can affect individuals from any walk of life; regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, or background. Anyone can be impacted by these challenges. There has been a significant rise in addictions across Ireland including drug use, gambling, Internet, sex/porn and Duhallow is no different, which is noted in the findings in IRD Duhallow’s 2021 Youth Needs Analysis.
With this in mind, IRD Duhallow have put together an event that focuses on addiction and how it affects every facet of life. To deliver this message, the panel has a powerhouse trio who have experience in discussing their own battles with addiction; Ciarán Carey, Brenda Dennehy, and Tony O’Reilly. With the help of An Garda Síochana, they will educate on recognition, resources, and how their stories can help others.

Volunteer Week
National Volunteering Week will run from 20th to 26th May. This year’s theme - ‘Uniquely Us!’ - is all about celebrating the diversity of volunteers who make Ireland what it is. Regardless of age, race, abilities, or status, every volunteer plays a unique role in our communities.
Volunteering can be a great opportunity for a person to develop their skills and build up their experience to add to their C.V. Volunteers are involved in all aspects of society; local communities, youth and education, the arts, childcare facilities, local charities and many more. There are some great opportunities available. Remember that volunteering not only benefits the community but also provides personal fulfillment and a chance to connect with others who share your interests!
Banteer Host The County Juvenile Athletic Championships
Another Major event was held in Banteer Sportsfield and was a huge success. It is an event normally held in the Mardyke Arena in Cork City but due to maintenance issues a new venue was sought. Local man Mike O’Flynn Secretary of County Board worked with Denis Withers, Patrick Buckley, Paddy Dan Buckley and John O’Leary to put a plan in place that was agreed by Cork Athletics. It was fantastic to see that plan come to fruition under glorious sunshine on Sunday last.
653 competitors from U9 to U14 took part in a variety of track events. Green Bean Café was well staffed and stocked to provide all
Railway project near completion
The major construction project at Banteer Railway station will soon be coming to an end and will be of major benefit to all users of Banteer station.
Thanks to Irish Rail and Jons contractors who have worked closely with local stakeholders in ensuring the project progressed with minimum delays and issues.
Irish Rail and Jons also express their thanks to all neighbours and the local community for their help and co operation.
Irish Rail has also sanctioned the surfacing of the laneway at the rear of the railway station, adjoining the Sportsfield area. This will comprise the preparation of the existing surface and the application of a double surface dressing layer (tar and chippings) as a wearing course. Jons Civil Engineering will arrange for this work to be carried out and this is likely to take place near the end of May. The local Community Council and Banteer Tidy Towns are also working with Irish Rail on other improvements at the railway to make a safer exit using one way system , additional parking at the Station and painting etc of fencing.

Cork Athletic Board Secretary Mike O Flynn who was also MC for the day said “I want to say a huge thank you to all involved in supporting the County athletics finals today. I heard nothing but positive feedback from people who attended. The enjoyed their

Eddie Crashes Out Of Giro d Italia
Struck by bad luck in the Giro which saw him withdraw after a crash, Eddie could potentially ride the Tour de France for the first time this year in a revised race programme.
Matt White, lead sporting director with the Jayco AlUla squad, said this week that a Tour debut could possibly be on the cards, even if he would personally rather Dunbar ride the Vuelta a España.
“We spoke about it this morning. The Tour is not totally out of the question, but we’ve got climbers for the Tour. Look, he’s got a preparation now that would probably allow it. But we have to wait and see. Off the top of my head, I’d probably like to see him at the Vuelta first and ride GC [general classification] again. The idea was to ride the Vuelta anyway, but what we did was going to depend on what we did here in the Giro.
“But now with the Giro out, I would like to see him focus on being at his best for the Vuelta and have another crack at the top 10 there.”
A decision will be made by the team closer to the Tour start on June 29th.

Land War to Civil War: Donoughmore to Cork and Beyond
This new publication paints a compelling picture of Ireland during the period 1900-1924 in the context of the parish of Donoughmore, Co Cork. It explores, examines, and explains how in a remarkable display of perseverance a road to selfgovernment was achieved. Building on the well-received Ancient Sweet Donoughmore: Life in an Irish Rural Parish to 1900 (2015) it broadens its scope, encompassing events in Cork City, Manchester and beyond giving a more expanded study of the period.
Land War to Civil War: Donoughmore to Cork and Beyond chronicles this development of a new invigorated nationalism which saw a reawakening of social, cultural, and political aspects of national identity. The visits of renowned Irish politicians Michael Davitt and William O’Brien to
Donoughmore facilitated that resurgence. The area became one of the centres of attention along the road to independence in Cork and incidents such as the executions of Mrs. Lindsay and Geoffrey ComptonSmith propelled it to the forefront of international news.
The heroism displayed by ordinary men and women in putting their lives in danger in an era of intense vigilance and intimidation is captured in an incisive manner. This is aptly portrayed in the story of the Wallace sisters in Cork and by the previously unrecognised work of Mary Healy in Manchester.
Civil war brought out the worst in human nature and hunger strikes, executions and emigration created intense rancour and left a residual
memory difficult to eradicate. On a lighter note, readers will be enthralled to hear of stories such as the IRA soldier who became a monk, the story of the ‘Moon Car’ which threatened to upsurge the treaty between Ireland and Britian and the ‘Titanic’ connection with Donoughmore.

Newmarket Makes Strides With River Walk
Newmarket Sports & Leisure in collaboration with Coillte has been making slow but steady progress on upgrading our local Island Wood.
Work to date includes:
• Extension of car park on right hand side which has resulted in 10 extra car park spaces.
• New fenced access from Clongeel side across metal bridge ( replacing previous right of way)
• New signage including maps of 3 colour coded trails.
• Additional seating and picnic benches.
• Total resurfacing of upper road from Car Park all the way
to the Rock. This was made possible thanks to Cork County Council.
The late Gerard Murphy played a massive role in much of the work to date and was always a big supporter of the iconic Island Wood. In fact, he played a key role in securing some funding for our next phase which includes a complete upgrade of the scenic River Walk.
Due to its proximity to the River, both Inland Fisheries & National Parks and Wildlife Services (as well as Coillte) have been part of the discussions on the new surface. This will be a major project resulting in the River Walk having to be closed for a number
of weeks. It is hoped that further walks will be carried out after this. A community meeting is planned over the coming months where all suggestions will be welcome.

IRD Duhallow To Run Addiction Awareness Event
By BRÍGHID-ÍDE WALSH IRD Duhallow Development OfficerRecognising these issues, IRD Duhallow Youth and Education Working Group has organised an Addiction and Mental Health Awareness Event to promote inclusivity and understanding within our communities and to offer preventative supports to young people. Whether you’re seeking resources for yourself or a loved one or simply want to educate yourself this event is for you. It is suitable for anyone aged over 16 years of age.
This event holds significant importance in fostering understanding, support, and resources and will provide a platform for open dialogue, destigmatisation, and education surrounding addiction and mental health issues. Essential preventative supports will be discussed and can equip individuals with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to make informed choices and maintain their well-being. This proactive event will educate people about the risks associated with addiction and mental health challenges, empowering them to recognise warning signs, seek help when needed, and make healthier decisions.
On the night we will have a panel of expert speakers including addiction counsellors, people with lived experience of addiction and An Garda Síochana, who will discuss addiction and mental health topics with time for a Q&A and discussion also.
The event will take place on Tuesday 28th May at 7pm in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket. For more information please contact brighid-ide.walsh@irdduhallow.com or call 02960633.

There Is A Lot To Be Thankful For
By ALICE O’BRIEN Alice O’Brien Counselling, NewmarketSometimes our days are just full. Full of tasks to keep the show on the road; ferrying children to matches, going to work, calling to elderly relatives and that’s all before you hoover the sitting room or clean the bathroom or decide what to cook for dinner for the fifth time this week. So, adding another daily practice might be the straw to break the proverbial camel’s back. Daily practices like meditation or journaling take time, time we often don’t have, so we try to do these things but end up squeezing them in and adding more stress to our packed day. But, one practice that doesn’t take a lot of time and
is not overly Zen is the practice of gratitude. Practicing daily gratitude can help us to see that what we have is enough, therefore slowing the speed at which we peruse the next big thing.
There are so many benefits to taking a few minutes every day to notice what is good in your life:
- Practicing gratitude helps us to recognise our emotions and to notice our positive emotions, like joy, happiness and contentment.
- Slowing down to notice the good things can help us to really enjoy the positive experiences, instead of just passing them by on the way to the next thing.
- Gratitude practice can help us to manage stressful times easier. Stress occurs when we believe that the load exceeds what we are
capable of carrying- gratitude can show us that we are more than capable.
- We can see our health and our bodies more clearly when we focus on what we are thankful for.
- Thankful for being free of illness or of getting through an illness, thankful for all the things our health allows us to experience.
- If we are lucky enough to be abundant, if we have a roof over our head, a car to drive around in, clothes on our back or shoes on our feet, then we are very fortunate, and gratitude practice can remind us of that.
So, take a few minutes during the busy times, take a deep breath and list the three things you are most grateful for in that momentthere is always something.
Battling Pollen: How to Survive Hay Fever Season
By MAIREAD O’KEEFFE New Leaf Health StoreAs the sun comes out many people have to stay in because they suffer from hay fever. Hay fever, also called seasonal allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to pollen from trees, grass and weeds. Some people are allergic to just one type of pollen, while others suffer symptoms caused by all three. The most common symptoms are sneezing, coughing and itchy eyes. Now, in late May, we are in the season for both tree pollen and grass pollen.
There is no cure for hay fever, but there are ways to reduce the symptoms.
Staying indoors when the pollen count is high will help. If you need to go outside, invest in some wraparound sunglasses to help keep pollen out of your eyes. You can
also use a barrier balm like Haymax around your nostrils to prevent pollen entering your nose.
Take a trip out to the seaside and enjoy the refreshing pollen free sea breeze.
The A. Vogel Pollinosan range includes Pollinosan Tablets, Pollinosan Nasal Spray to help clear and soothe the nose and Pollinosan Hayfever Eye Drops to offer relief for red and itchy eyes and protection against pollen.
Vitamin C is important to combat hay fever. Vitamin C acts differently from conventional antihistamine medications as it reduces the amount of histamine you produce rather than blocking histamine receptors.
Elderberries can help too, they contain natural antioxidants and are a natural source of vitamin C. Elderflowers have traditionally been used by herbalists to support the lining of the nose and throat, helping
to reduce sneezing.
Several studies indicate that Quercetin can have anti-allergic and antihistamine properties. Food sources include green vegetables, berries, beans and apples, but the amounts present and its bioavailability can vary. There are supplements available to boost your intake, these include Terra Nova Quercetin and Nettle capsules and new Somega Liposomal Quercetin. Beta-glucan has also been found to help with allergies. In one study, supplementation with Beta Glucans for just 4 weeks “improved allergy symptoms, overall physical health, and emotional well-being” in selfdescribed “moderate” hay fever sufferers during allergy season. Beta Glucan is found naturally in oats and barley, mushrooms, algae, and yeast, but we have several great supplements that you can use to be sure you are getting sufficient.
James O’Keeffe Institute Hosts Bridge Tournament
There was a great turnout for a bridge tournament in The James O’Keeffe Institute recently, which was part of the Bealtaine Festival 2024. It concluded with a lovely meal and dessert provided by DCFS. Everyone seemed to have a great day. Here’s to more games in the future!

Pray for Peace In Our World
By TOM DENNEHYMany times throughout the history of the world, people have been impelled to pray with great fervour for the cessation of wars and for a just and lasting peace. Surely the present is such a time, when conflicts are raging and the images we see on our screens everyday are more horrific than ever before imagined.
Our Mother, Mary, is the Queen of Peace, so what does she commend to us? She has left us in no doubt it is to pray the rosary. When she appeared to Bernadette in Lourdes in 1858 and to Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta at Fatima in 1917, she was herself carrying a rosary beads and it was at the very moment when the Portuguese children were saying the rosary that she first appeared to them. On a subsequent occasion they asked her who she was and she told them, “I am the Lady of the Rosary.” She told them, “I want a chapel to be built here in my honour. The rosary must be prayed every day.” In every one of the six apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, she stressed the praying of the rosary, and in five out of the six, she asked for daily recitation. “Pray the rosary every day to obtain peace for the world”. In July of that year, Our Lady gave the children an extra prayer to be said after every decade, ”Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.”
The praying of the rosary has proved effective so many times since St. Dominic was inspired to preach it in the thirteenth century. It was particularly effective in saving the world from impending
disaster. A notable example is the victory at Lepanto in 1571. Invading forces were about to overrun Europe and the outlook for Christianity looked bleak. Pope Pius V spent nights in prayer and called for a rosary crusade. His prayers were answered in what seemed a miraculous manner when the enemies were defeated and their fleets destroyed in a sea battle which has been described as one of the most important victories in history.
The rosary devotion has been recommended to the faithful by many popes. Leo X111 spoke and wrote so much about it that he has been called “The Pope of the Rosary.”
Pope St. Paul X said, “The rosary is the most beautiful and the richest in graces of all prayers.” It is the prayer which touches most the Heart of the Mother of God and if you want peace to reign in your homes and in our world, pray the rosary.”
Pope John Paul XX111, although he led a busy life, prayed fifteen decades of the rosary every day and even wrote meditations on its mysteries. St. Pope John Paul 11 called the rosary, “My favourite prayer.” And he added the five Luminous Mysteries to the rosary. Pope Francis reminds us that the rosary prepares our hearts to receive God’s grace and teaches us to place ourselves in the hands of God, allowing Him to guide our steps along the path of our faith journey. He invites us to rediscover the beauty of the rosary this month of Mary encouraging us to carry a rosary beads in
our hands or in our pockets. Our Lady in Medjugorje pleads with us to take the Rosary in our hands like never before and pray unceasingly because Satan wants hatred and war.
In her message on April 25th she tells us, “ Dear children; I am with you to tell you that I love you and encourage you to prayer; because Satan is strong and every day his strength is stronger through those who have chosen death and hatred. You, little children, be people of prayer so that my extended hands of love will reach all those who are in darkness and seek the light of our God. Thank you for having responded to my call.”
Let us respond to our Lady’s call to pray the rosary every day and use every opportunity to join with others. You will see miracles happen in your lives and the lives of your loved ones. Our Lady has promised that nothing is impossible by the prayer of the rosary. You might consider joining the All Ireland Rosary rally in Knock Shrine on Sunday June 1st. It was a resounding success last year when huge crowds gathered from all over the country.
Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us.
