IRD Mourns The Loss Of Two Exceptional Duhallow Men A tinge of sadness to the start of 2024 as IRD Duhallow mourns the loss of two of our former Chairmen Jerry Sheehan and Jack Roche. Two outstanding social innovators with a vision and passion for our rural communities, these men certainly left an indelible mark on the Duhallow Region and we are fortunate to have had two such visionaries advocating on behalf of the people of the area. Their legacies are far reaching and the impact of their work will continue to blossom for many years to come. Jerry was in fact a founding member of IRD Duhallow and Jack was world renowned as an expert and visionary of the LEADER model, and was also president of ELARD (The European LEADER Association for Rural Development).

Post of North Cork Rural Community Health Worker We are seeking applications for 1 X fulltime (39hour weekly) position of Rural Community Health Worker.

Location: Duhallow area of North Cork IRD Duhallow, James O Keeffe Institute Newmarket.

Job Description:

This is a exciting non clinical post for someone who enjoys working with people and groups, has knowledge of the broad range of supports and services provided by community and voluntary organisations and an interest in Community Health and Wellbeing as well as working knowledge and awareness of the social determinants of health.

The post will be managed by IRD Duhallow. The post holder will also have a reporting relationship to the employing organisation in the local area as well as a local steering group comprised of local representation/stakeholders with representatives from CKHC HSE. The posts are funded by CKCH HSE Mental Health Services and are administer and supported through Cork North Community Work Department CKCH HSE.

The overall aim of the post:

The Rural Community Health Work post will form part of a team of rural community health workers across rural areas of North Cork enhancing existing services to support the development and delivery of a Community Health Programme locally inclusive of the organisation and delivery of specific suicide awareness trainings and wellbeing workshops. The areas of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention in the rural communities will also be supported by this post.

Professional Qualifications Experience and Eligibility: A relevant qualification in the area of Community Work/Community Development/Community Education/Community Mental Health & Wellbeing e.g. a certificate, diploma or degree in Youth and Community Work / Community Education.

Dromagh N.S. Dromagh N.S. Children Filled The Halls And Corridors Of Local Hospitals And Day Care Centers With Festive Carols, Cheer and Laughter Having entered 2024 and reflecting on Christmas 2023, it can lead us to reflect on Christmas in general.

It evokes the title of the classic Chris Rea song, where most people would have been "Driving Home for Christmas". But while traditionally everyone does what they can – be it by trains, planes or automobiles – to be with their loved ones over the festive period, some will be working abroad, others can’t afford the fare and some will be in hospital for the duration of the festivities.

With this thought in mind, the children from the Senior Room of Dromagh N.S. travelled to Teach Altra Newmarket, Kanturk Community Hospital, Millstreet Community Hospital and Millstreet Day Care Centre on the 12th and 13th December 2023.

Christmas is a time for giving and the children gave this in abundance on their visit. They presented chocolates and a Christmas card signed by each individual student of the school. They made and gave table centrepieces to the various establishments for their Christmas Tables. Christmas songs were given gusto and vigour. Fun and laughter was had between the children, patients and staff.

We wish to thank all the establishments for giving our children a warm welcome and allowing the visit. It was a magnificent experience for the children to be able to bring a smile, warm feeling into the heart of the patients and staff at this special time of the year. Sincere thanks to all.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves at Dromagh NS

Dromagh NS celebrated the festive season in style with another wonderful performance. On the 19th December, it was showtime at The Glen Theatre for the boys and girls of the school.

For parents, watching their child perform on stage is the stuff of Christmas magic, and Dromagh School goes all out to welcome families to see their child or relative perform on stage.

The school was full of colour and excitement as the children prepared to take to the stage in front of their families. Costumes fitting and swapping, tap dancing to song rehearsals was all part of the fun and mischief. The night was a great success. We are so grateful to all parents, friends and community who came along to support the school. A huge “Thank You” to all the sponsors of the raffle prizes on the night. Your support is very much appreciated.

We would like to wish you all a very “Happy New Year”. Athbhliain faoi mhaise dhuit.

Our Christmas Tour The school travelled for Cork the morning after the Christmas Show for their Christmas Tour. It was a day of rest and relaxation after our performance. Lots of laughter, giggles, Christmas songs, and jokes were told on the bus trip to and from Cork. A great day was had at The Planet Entertainment Centre with a call to Dino’s for some hot comfy food on the way home. Great memories were created.

Lismire N.S.

Lismire N.S. Update

Another very busy term was enjoyed at Lismire NS. The older children had a trip to Blackrock Observatory a very enjoyable day with lots learnt along the way. The highlight of the term was December 8th, where the school choir sang at mass and were joined by the school community and Lismire Community members back at the school for more festive songs, poems and performances. The children made the school community proud with their wonderful singing etc. and the day was exceptionally well supported by parents and community members. We also enjoyed an inspirational visit from Lismire Football team and management, with the cups they won during the season - a great occasion for the community!

Well done to Adrian, Dáithí and Aaron who won the main prizes in the annual Christmas raffle organised by the Parents' Association.

Scoil Mhuire

"Grease Lightnin’ " Takes Scoil Mhuire Kanturk By Storm

Students from Scoil Mhuire Kanturk delivered stellar performances of Grease on the 13th, 14th and 15th December, captivating each sold out audience with action packed dancing, singing, and incredible acting.

A talented cast brought iconic characters to life, creating a memorable experience for all in attendance.

Under the superb guidance of Musical Director Mrs Caitríona McNamara and Assistant Musical Director Mrs Sharon McCarthy, the cast of Scoil Mhuire Kanturk began preparations for this musical in early October. The cast, comprising of 56 students from across the school, was an exceptionally talented, diverse, and dedicated ensemble, each contributing their unique charisma and skills to deliver a

truly captivating performance. To recreate the iconic scenes from the Grease film, the cast received guidance and support from choreographer Eimear James.

Working closely with Eimear, who instilled passion, precision and flair, these talented performers captured the essence of the original dances and infused them with a fresh energy.

The Grease musical was a testament to the incredible teamwork behind the scenes of SMK students, staff and parents. The backstage crew, set construction team, costume team and set design team played a crucial role in supporting the cast and bring the production to the height of excellence. The dedication of the cast and crew undoubtedly contributed to the seamless execution of these

spectacular musical performances.

Speaking at the end of the final performance, School Principal, Denis Keating thanked the local community and businesses of Kanturk for their incredible support in staging this musical.

He expressed his gratitude to the staff and parents of SMK for their spirit, commitment and dedication in making Grease 2023 such a success. He reserved his highest praise for the students who made up the cast and crew telling them how proud he was of them and their achievements.

Grease 2023 at SMK continued a long tradition going back to 1987 of staging quality musical productions and the school community is already looking forward to their next musical production, planned for 2025.

KDCC Updates

As we begin 2024 we in Kanturk and District Community Council would like to reflect on what we did during 2023 We started off with our inaugural 5k FUN walk which was followed by our first ever Person Of The Month awards which obviously continued throughout the year .

The St Patrick's parade Day was organised and back bigger than ever after a lapse of number of years due to the pandemic.

This was followed with our first ever Spring Market in the Edel Quinn hall. Than it was straight into even another first - our Golf

classic held at the local golf club.

We had break from events for a while as major works in both halls was underway. The main roof in the Edel Quinn hall was replaced as well as the flat roof at the temperance Hall. Some electrical work was also done in both halls. These cost in the region of €120,000+ .

A church gate collection was held in September. The Temperance hall was painted inside and out to the highest standard.

Preparations begun for a very busy Christmas period. Then we had the Remembrance tree ribbons/mass

Last post from the fundraiser for Francis.

It started in Ballyhea 2016 and ends tonight. It's been very emotional but extremely rewarding.

From the feeling of loss to the caring and love shown to me from family and friends. And the support given from everyone - including complete strangers - was truly heart warming. Don't know what Francis would say but I think he would be very proud. Not just for what I've done in memory for him, but the high esteem in which he is held to this day.

A promise made to him to challenge myself to do something totally out of my comfort zone, something I never thought about doing or thought I would be able to do. From getting out walking, losing the weight, and trying to get running. It was hard but I always looked up and thought of him and he would get me the extra yard or over the top of the hill. The support from my wife Amanda and two friends at this time was also vital.

Finally we get to Dublin to the Marathon!

Noreen and I decided to stay together and enjoy the atmosphere, and I can certainly say we did that.

It was amazing.

As we were going around it was great to hear "Come on, Francis Higgins!" through the streets of Dublin, But tears did come to my eyes thinking of him. Noreen noticed, tapped me on my back, and said a few words I will never, ever forget; "He's on your shoulder" That got me to the finish, and we crossed the line together.

PROMISE FULFILLED I must thank all who supported, helped, donated, messaged and were there for me, please forgive if I forget anyone.

We ended the year with our Annual 5k Fun walk on St. Stephens Day. So an extremely busy 2023 behind us and another busy year ahead.

There's still 3 roofs to be done in the Edel Quinn hall as well as more electrical, utility, painting and outside clearing in both halls to be done.

As 2023 was drawing to a close, Jerry Sheehan, the man responsible for setting up IRD Duhallow, passed away peacefully, comforted by his family. Jerry had led a very active life up to recently when health issues forced him to slow down.

Jerry Sheehan has left an indelible print on the Duhallow landscape with significant economic, cultural, environmental and rural development legacies for the wider Duhallow region. Firstly, he founded Avonmore Electrical in Millstreet and developed it from an initial local service to agriculture and domestic clients in Millstreet into a multimillion-euro service and

Jerry Sheehan with board members Judy O'Leary and the late Conor O'Flynn His love of nature led to him establishing ambitious projects that will be a legacy to be valued more and more as climate change fall out becomes more apparent. Jerry established Millstreet County Park in the early 90s showing once again his entrepreneurial skill and ability as well as his vision. It comprises 500 acres for biodiversity and an extensive arboretum, managed wetlands, miles of meandering walks through the various herb rich meadows and high landscape as well as its deer farm.

Finally, Jerry had a great love of salmon and trout angling on his beloved Blackwater an Abhainn Mhór, from which he coined the name Avonmore for his then Millstreet based electrical business. During long evenings angling there in the 1980s with friends like the late John Ronan of (Ronan Daly Jermyn Accountants Cork), Jerry and John discussed what could be done to IRD Duhallow Chairs up to 2016. Jack was instrumental in launching the SAOI network in 2017. Here he is with fellow members getting into the festival mood for the official launch of Duhallow’s 2019 Bealtaine Programme.

He never hid his Republican roots in politics and was very proud of Sean Moylan and the men of the South. A copy of that painting by Sean Keating from the National Gallery was presented to Jack by the Board of IRD Duhallow on completion of his term as Chairman.

He had it prominently displayed in Bruach na Carraige. He told us that he was very proud to have been the man to name the volunteers in that picture for the National gallery.

While Jack never denied his political heritage and was a proud Fianna Fáil representative he had the ability to work with and see the merit and good in people of all parties and none.

Often on train journeys from Dublin, we would share a seat with the late Jackie Healy Rae,

the Independent Kerry TD and the journey would pass too quickly listening to both regale us with stories of by-election campaigns and other events. Indeed, they regaled the entire carriage if the truth be told and were never nasty or cutting to others always sharing praise with others.

Jack also had great time for Marian Harkin, Independent MEP from Sligo and of course Liadh Ní Ríada, Sinn Féin MEP for Munster both of whom had great welcomes for the Irish delegations he led in Brussels and did a lot of work to promote Ireland’s Rural Development LEADER Programme in the European Parliament and Commission.

with Jimmy Deenihan Fine Gael TD for North Kerry with whom he shared a passion for culture, heritage and sport and when Jimmy became Minister for Rural Development in the Department of Agriculture both shared the common purpose of extending LEADER from the 16 pilot programmes of which IRD Duhallow was one and bringing in places like North Kerry, West Limerick, Blackwater Region and Mid Cork into the LEADER fold. Jack also shared a huge bond of friendship with Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Eamonn O’Cuív and they worked extremely well together although Jack didn’t always get his own way, they shared a passion for the Irish Language and culture.

Jack’s huge interest in Gaelic Games has been recounted over recent times and his role of coach/ manager of club and county is well recognised. He shared this passion with Sean Kelly MEP on several occasions when they met in

He had all the characteristics of a true Chieftain in rallying support with phrases like ‘if ye are not with me ye are against me’ always instilling integrity and hard work and tenacity.

He admired people that had well thought out and considered opinions and principles even if they didn’t share his. He inspired us to stick to our principles and listen to what people were saying as well as what they were not saying. We can’t help but note the coincidence that Jerry Sheehan, founder of IRD Duhallow and the first LEADER Programme in Duhallow, Jack Roche who championed LEADER in Ireland and brought LEADER to Eastern Europe and Jacques Delors the European ‘President’ whose policy “the Future of Rural Europe” and gave rise to the establishment of LEADER, were all called to the next world at the same time.

Stress - The Adult Version Of A Tantrum

Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket If there is a two-year old in your life, your own or someone else’s, you’ll be familiar with the tantrum. The spectacular display of emotions, the crying, the snots, the inability to control their bodies resulting in flapping and wriggling around the ground no matter the location. It really is a sight to behold.

Although the cause of these tantrums might seem unreasonable- maybe their banana was peeled in the wrong way, or their cup is the wrong colourthere is something happening in that toddler that happens in us all when we get stressed. They are over-whelmed. They are unable to meet the demands of the situation emotionally, so they are unable to manage the actions required to deal with it.

If I told you that the same thing

happens to you when you get stressed, you’d probably laugh at the idea of throwing a tantrum during your next work meeting.

Imagining yourself crying at your boss or throwing your sippy cup at him.

But, think about the last time you felt stressed. You became overwhelmed, you began to think that you cannot meet the demands put upon you. You might have felt physical symptoms, like your heart racing or your concentration lessening. You may not have laid down on the ground and cried but you may still have engaged in unhealthy coping like avoidance, irritability or unhealthy habits like over-eating or having an extra drink to cope.

So, how do you cope with stress? Here’s a few suggestions:

Share the load.

Practice good self-care. Take regular breaks. Move your body. Get away from the desk occasionally. No-one is that important that they can’t be done without for a few minuteseven you.

Not only because physical activity improves emotions by increasing brain concentrations of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine but also because you are showing respect to your body.

When you are talking to yourself

- either in your head or out loud try not to criticise yourself. Noticing when you criticise yourself is the first step in stopping that habit.

Try something new in 2024, expand your horizons and take on new challenges.

New Year - A Time of Hope and Reflection

By TOM DENNEHY As we begin our New Year we reflect on how we can make changes and become a better version of who God created us to be. This year let us ask God’s Holy Spirit to guide us.

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed.”Proverbs 16.3.

Our resolutions might be pure, but we need to allow God to be part of the process and pray to Him for support, help, and guidance. We need to let Him into our soul and heart and give Him the space to help us fulfil our resolutions and our dreams.

1.Take care of yourself. First and foremost we must love ourselves.

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.” We are made in the image and likeness of God and we are precious to Him. 2. Love others. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself. Luke 10.27.

3. Take care of your family life. giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention and love.

4. Spend quality time with others. Talk to people on the phone rather than text. Your voice is unique and there is healing in the human voice. Call to a neighbour who lives alone. Call to someone recently bereaved who would like some company.

5. Help those in need.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food , I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was

a stranger and you welcomed me.”

6. Avoid people who are negative. They will destroy your peace which is your great gift from God and a fruit of the Holy Spirit.

7. Avoid gossip. When someone starts gossiping in your presence, respond by saying something positive in defence of the subject matter.

8. Forgive those who have hurt you. Forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.

“Forgive as the Lord forgives you.”

Colossians 3: 13. We must forgive to find healing for ourselves.

9. Keep a diary for each day.

Write even a short entry of where you encountered the Lord your God in your work and your meetings with others.

10. Make time for prayer each day. Also have some quiet time with the Lord as prayer should never be one way. Listening to the voice of the Lord is a most important gift in your prayer life.

11. Avoid the use of offensive words. Make a very special effort to avoid using the Holy Name of Jesus in vain. Today reverence for the name of Jesus has never been lower. His name is used regularly in an irreverent way in conversation. People are not even aware that they are using the name of Jesus in this disrespectful manner. They do not know about the amazing power of the Holy Name of Jesus. As the month of January is dedicated to His Holy Name, let us make a very special resolution in 2024 to honour His Name and strengthen our devotion to the powerful name of Jesus.

12. Cultivate an air of gratitude and count your blessings each day. Gratitude glorifies God and helps us realise that all we have comes from Him. Gratitude helps us to see God as it opens our spiritual eyes . The more we thank Him, the more we see Him working in us and around us. Let us give thanks and glory to God for the wonderful world He has created , the beauty of nature , our health, the gift of life, our talents and abilities. So for the New Year let us change our lives by counting our blessings each day and we will be amazed at the changes it will bring about.

13. Above all, know and come to understand how much God loves you. His love is unconditional love. He loves us regardless of whether we respond to His love for us or not. He never gives up on us. He showed His great love for us by sending His son to die on the cross for our salvation thus ensuring eternal life for us in His heavenly kingdom of peace and joy.

So whatever the New Year brings let us never lose sight of Jesus who will never break His promises to us. He will never disappoint us and He will be always be with us on our journey throughout the year.

When you were growing up, did you always want to be a golfer?

I never really had a passion for anything specifically growing up but when I started to play golf I found my passion and became addicted to getting better.

I would have to say this years captain, Luke Donald; he seemed like he did a great job in the role and it resulted in a victory.

I played basketball and I used to do Irish dancing as well.

It is a public University just outside the city of Louisville, Kentucky.

A Novel Approach to Wellness

Rural Community Health Worker We all know that reading is good for us. New research has highlighted how beneficial it can be in improving brain and memory function and keeping our brains operating more effectively as we age. Studies have also shown that reading reduces stress, promotes relaxation, and improves sleep. IRD Duhallow's Reading for the Brain Book Club, a new initiative by the Rural Community Health Project, focuses on these good points, bringing people together to enjoy the benefits that good old-fashioned reading can have on our mental well-being. Gathering every Tuesday at 2:30 pm, the book club offers a space where the community can experience these benefits while fostering a sense of connection and intellectual growth.

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” – George R. R. Martin of a classic haunted house thriller with contemporary psychological suspense. The story, released on 06 August 2019, is noted for its atmospheric, eerie, and dark narrative.

The story follows a nanny's harrowing experiences in a supposedly haunted house, with Ware's narrative prowess creating an atmosphere filled with tension and mystery. The setting, Heatherbrae House, is a critical element of the story, the house's dark history plays a significant role in the unfolding of the narrative. Ruth Ware's intricate descriptions of the settings bring the story to life, combining Gothic suspense with modern elements of paranoia. It keeps readers on edge, constantly questioning the unfolding events.

While the club members were captivated by Ware's tense plot, leading to vibrant debates, there were mixed feelings about the book's execution. Many members

felt the book's conclusion was hurried; a sentiment echoed in other reviews. This rushed pacing to resolve the complex plot did not meet the expectations of all readers.

Some club members noted that numerous plot threads seemed to lead nowhere, adding to a sense of several unfinished narrative arcs.

Some aspects of the characters were perceived as unrealistic or inconsistent, which impacted the story's believability for some readers.

Despite the varied opinions, the book club members' overall interest in Ruth Ware's storytelling remains strong. Many expressed interest in exploring more of Ware's works, indicating that the engaging narrative and the suspenseful plot were compelling enough to encourage further reading of her novels.

Assist community and voluntary groups to identify and articulate their own needs and to develop strategies to address such needs.

Assist in programme development.

Facilitate both group development and meetings of individual Community groups, specialised groups Community Forums and Networks.

Support community groups in developing community projects. Identify sources of funding and support for such projects.

Person Specification:
