Ballydrohane Ambush

Honouring The Volunteers: Councillors Bernard and Michael Moynihan were amongst the attendees of the Ceremony The Volunteers who fought at Ballydrohane Ambush were honoured at a Commemoration Ceremony in Kanturk Square last Sunday.

Councillor Bernard Moynihan who organised the event and delivered the Oration said that it is vitally important to acknowledge the importance of the Ambush which took place on a bend on the road between Newmarket and Kanturk in October 1921.

Ambush. Councillor Moynihan said “This was a significant engagement which was the first since the capture of Mallow barracks. A Hochkiss machine gun, which was a much more powerful weapon than the volunteers had previously used, was deployed. Senior Freedom Fighters Seán Moylan, Ernie O’ Malley, Liam Lynch and Paddy O’ Brien were involved along with several of the local Volunteers”. Dan Guiney from Kiskeam was selected by Moylan to put a farm cart on the road to block the Lorries carrying crown forces who regularly travelled between Newmarket and Kanturk.

Councillor Moynihan continued; “It required exact timing to move the cart into position to block the Lorries. After the road was blocked, a gun fight took place for up to 8 minutes. The one casualty was the British Solder driving the lorry. The volunteers captured 8 Revolvers, 12 Rifles and a significant amount of Ammunition”. The usual procedure at the end of Ambushes was to burn out the Lorries but Moylan decided not to do this because of the dead Soldier and said a prayer over him.

Councillor Moynihan added “We should salute the people who came

before us and who achieved the peace we have today. We should also salute the women who provided safe houses and fed and tended to the volunteers who were on the run from the British. We hope to hold an event annually in October to mark this ambush” Councillor Moynihan added that he was particularly happy to be invited to deliver the Oration as his Grand Uncle Jim Riordan from Kiskeam took part in the Ambush.

Kanturk Kanturk and District Community Council and Tina Dunstan of Cherryblossoms Childcare are delighted to announce the OCTOBER PERSON OF THE MONTH AWARD: Michael O’Driscoll Michael O’Driscoll has been with Kanturk AFC for many decades through coaching, manager, chairman and is now the life time president of the club. He can be seen every weekend volunteering his time with the club soccer lotto.

All the work he and others have done down the years have led to fantastic facilities out in gurteenard. He can also be seen before Christmas doing anther vital role which children love at the festive season. Michael is a very worthy and deserving winner. Congratulations Michael.

Castlemagner

Christmas Comes Early For Castlemagner

Castlemagner Sinsir Club are celebrating their 10th annual cookery demonstration in Castlemagner Community Centre on Wednesday 6th of December at 8pm. This demonstration will be delivered by renowned local chef, Hazel Bourke.

This is a highly anticipated festive and seasonal event in Castlemagner each year and is the ideal gathering for entering into the Christmas spirit, providing the opportunity to socialise and chat with friends and neighbours.

On arrival, guests will be treated

to a reception of homemade mulled wine and some artisan Christmas treats. The event is the perfect crash course to fine tune your culinary skills for the coming festive season to impress all your friends and family. An exceptional demonstration of skill and fine dining is assured with some exclusive secret tips and recipes to be divulged on the night.

Admission includes a booklet containing all the recipes and methods which will be used.

Admission is €10 and tickets may be purchased at the door or from

any member of the club. Everybody is welcome to attend. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

The cookery demonstration is a fundraiser for the Castlemagner Sinsir Club Annual Christmas Party held at Springfort Hall on the following Sunday, 10th of December.

Reflection For Autumn

The recent Annual Harvest Thanksgiving Mass in St Mary’s Church, Castlemagner attracted a large crowd on October 21st. Each year the community gathers to celebrate the fruits of the harvest, offering them at the very special Annual Harvest Mass. At this time of year, we reflect on the changing colour of the season. The community gathered in the spirit of gratitude to offer thanks for the year’s fruits and to reflect on the natural changes as we enter into the winter months, with the promise of a new season next year. Sincere thanks to those who sang, read, offered gifts or helped in any way. The below reflection which evokes the beauty of the season was read at the mass.

The Famine Is Over

It’s a lifetime ago since Castlemagner experienced footballing success at Junior level in Duhallow. It was indeed back in 1961, a year in which John F Kennedy was inaugurated as 35th President of the USA; a little bit closer to home the Berlin wall began its construction and a littleknown Scottish singer Donovan, (now residing in Castlemagner), was at the beginning of his musical career.

In 1961 Castlemagner captained by the late Sean Crowley was at the end of a glorious era where ten Duhallow titles and three county titles were won in a period between 1947 and 1961. Little did that team know that it would be so long before the cup was brought back to Castle. Indeed the club’s last appearance in a Duhallow football final was in 1966 against Knocknagree, the team they faced on Sunday 22nd October 2023.

The tides were indeed turning, as in 1966 Knocknagree beat Castlemagner in a replay to land their clubs first ever title at Junior level.

But Sunday 22nd October 2023 was the time to set the record

straight and that is exactly what Castlemagner did. The team under the hugely influential leadership of their captain Donal Gayer went to battle. Castlemagner played a much more fluent, open brand of football choosing at all times to move the ball forwards, constantly probing for openings in Knocknagree’s rearguard. Aside from a shaky opening few minutes

by Castlemagner until Jack Cott got onto the end of a high ball put into the square by Danny Lenihan to divert the ball to the back of the net, the result was never really in doubt. The hunger and will to win every breaking ball and fight hard for each other to put scores on the board saw them over the line with much to spare.

Black and Amber throughout the hour entertained the large crowd in attendance.

Tadgh Fitzmaurice was singled out with a Man of the Matchwinning performance but there were many men in the Black and Amber that can be hugely proud of their contribution over the hour.

The final whistle when blown by match referee Denis O Leary was met with a huge outpouring of emotions by all from the parish.

The long wait was over. This club has worked hard to get where they are now (a Duhallow title in the bag), none more so than the players themselves who have spent the last year on this quest.

The cup was presented by Steven Lynch representing the Duhallow Board and the celebrations began. Castlemagner will now go on to represent the division in the county when they will meet Barryroe, the winners of the Carbery division on Sunday 5th November in Macroom.

Celebrations back in the village continued with the team led by a piper to the community hall where all team members were on stage to meet the crowd and lift the cup.

There is no doubt that they will enjoy this victory for a few days but the air of optimism around the place about this team is that they will bring more honours to the club before they are finished. Maybe we are at the brink of another golden era for the club who knows….

Banteer

Banteer’s Pride of Place

The All Ireland winners in the Pride of Place competition will be announced on Fri 10th Nov at a function in the Armagh City Hotel and hopes are high that Banteer will hopefully be a winner.

Cork County Council nominated Banteer to represent Cork County in the Pride of Place competition 2023 in April this year.

Banteer’s section is the Community Wellbeing section and we are up against entries from other Counties in that same section. The section has been divided into two; “targeted” and “holistic” Judging took place on Tues 1st Aug last with the community show casing the various community projects developed with a video presentation, tour and Q/A sessions.

County Mayor Frank O Flynn and Councilors’ John Paul O Shea, Bernard Moynihan, and Ian Doyle attended also as well as Maura Walsh IRD Manager to support the local community application.

Judges Tom and Alison Dowling were very impressed with what they saw and hopefully we will make the cut when the winners are announced in Armagh.

Banteer, like most rural villages in the 1980s, suffered a decline with young people leaving and the consequent loss of shops and services. This was a challenge for all rural communities, to put their shoulder to the wheel and plug into the various sources of services and funding which would empower people to create a better quality of life for all in their community.

Banteer is a perfect example of a community who took this challenge seriously and the community has developed a whole range of facilities/services over the past thirty to forty years.

In the early 1980s, the Banteer

Community Centre was built and officially opened in 1984, costing over £200,000 then with only £5,000 pounds of grant aid received.

Further major regeneration work in the Banteer area also coincided and was greatly helped with the formation of IRD Duhallow a very important community based integral rural development company that was established in 1989.

The company combines the efforts and resources of the State bodies, Local Authorities, Local Communities and individual entrepreneurs for the benefit of the Duhallow area. The Banteer area is now an example and an inspiration to other communities having completed such major key projects and services and • Over €7 million of community facilities/services projects including Banteer Sportsfield/ Park, Banteer Community Childcare, Banteer Community Centre/Indoor astro and the Glen Theatre have been completed with no outstanding debt and all are self sustainable developments.

• Employment created locally for over 42 local people plus others on RSS, CE and Tus schemes.

Won various awards including AIB Better Ireland, National Tidy Towns Wildlife and Endeavour awards, All Island Pride of Place award for Glen Theatre, Cork County Council Mayors award 2023 for Sportsfield development, Duhallow Business awards in 2015 and 2022, Limerick Civic Trust award, Various Litter Challenge and Tidy Towns awards, IRD Community awards.

Provide community facilities that provide, recreation facilities, youth club, sporting facilities, childcare service, arts and music, environmental and wildlife protection, social services, transport services, improved communication services, energy reduction, historical information/archives, local meals service and many other community needs.

Outside of the construction of the existing built facilities the local community has also: • Text alert systems, social alarms systems, community defibrillator systems, very active tidy towns groups.

Restored local heritage sites such as Sundays Well and the erection of the Dr Pat O’ Callaghan, Ambush and other monuments.

Developed a local Community Council housing policy in 2006 Upgraded the railway station with Ianroid Eireann to a state of the art totally automated station with further upgrades in progress there at present to ensure access for all and additional train services Provision of E-Fibre broadband to facilitate local enterprise / social interaction and remote working. E-fibre to the home is now also available locally.

Developed transport services to major towns and cities via rail travel ,weekly Bus Eireann service and Local Link Bus service to and from Kanturk and weekly bingo etc Progressed local roads improvements such as surfacing of roads, improved road safety and pushed for the development of the Ballymaquirke roundabout via

a public meeting held at the Glen Theatre in March 2018 All these projects and community services were progressed with the help and great support of the local community, IRD Duhallow, Local County Councillors and local TDs. The combination of all the projects/services has led to a better quality of life for all the people in Banteer area.

We thank all who helped with the original Pride of Place application and the judging day and also sponsors EPS Mallow who compiled the video and booklets, and Eamon Tarrant and Sons who provided transport on the judging day.

Special thanks also to Aileen Walsh Pride of place Coordinator with Cork County Council for her great help and support to date.

Banteer Sportsfield The recent major €2.2 million project was completed with the new astro pitch, community building and extension to the existing walks officially opened in Jan 2023. To date, the centre is very busy with various activities and up to 20 games some weeks.

This facility provides sports facilities for all groups, walking tracks, digital hub, cafe and museum area and when combined with other local facilities gives local families a great quality of life.

All these facilities are now very important in our rural community and its important we support all to make them sustainable developments going forward.

Many thanks to Deirdre Fallon and all the members in the Mount Hillary Athletic club for a cheque presentation to Banteer Community Sportsfield towards the recent project and in appreciation of the current facilities available to their club.

As the winter months arrive, everyday tasks can become more difficult. By

months COVID-19, influenza and other respiratory viruses will circulate at increased levels within our community. Remember, even when fully vaccinated, to wash your hands regularly, maintain social distancing, wear face coverings as required and follow proper sneeze/cough etiquette.

To be winter ready, you need to be aware of the weather conditions in your area, so that you can prepare. Met Éireann weather forecasts are available on RTÉ (radio and TV), on the independent local and national radio stations and on www.met.ie and the Met Éireann app. Along with updates and extra climate information on social media.

Preparing your home for winter

Ensure your home is prepared for the winter months.

Know your address and EIRCODE. Have a small supply of non perishable, easy to prepare foods.

Keep extra essential supplies such as medication and first aid in case it is difficult to get to the doctor/pharmacy.

• Have an adequate supply of fuel for heating/cooking • if possible an alternative supply should the main supply fail.

• Know how to turn off your water supply and have a water container to ensure a supply of drinking water.

• Have batteries for torches or alternative light sources in the event of a power cut.

• Keep your mobile devices charged up and have local emergency numbers.

• Have a suitable snow shovel (any shovel or spade will do).

• Prevent pipes freezing and protect your water supply by insulating tanks and pipes, getting your boiler serviced regularly by a plumber.

If not leaks could freeze and cause a breakdown and costly repairs.

• If your supply is frozen be cautious with the use of heating systems washing machines or other water dependant appliances or facilities.

• Water supply should be shut off in vacant premises to prevent leaks.

Helping yourself and supporting the community

In winter it can be difficult for everyone to get about and conduct day to day activities. It is even more difficult for older and other vulnerable people.

During these months, ensure to keep warm, eat well and avoid unnecessary travels.

• Wear well fitted shoes with non slip soles and if you have a fall, even a minor one make sure you visit your doctor for a check up.

• Look out for your older relatives and neighbours by checking up on them, if you have any doubts about their safety seek the assistance of the Garda Síochána or local social services.

• This is advice that could apply to anyone, however, it contains elements that may be relevant to persons with disabilities. If possible, make yourself aware of a relative or neighbour’s disability and ask them how best you can help them, if required.

• Arrange regular visits or phone calls at times of severe weather.

• Ask your relatives and neighbours for help if you need it.

• Ensure you are on the vulnerable customer registries for the energy companies and Irish Water.

Fully remove snow and ice from your vehicle before you depart.

Ensure to slow down in all severe weather conditions.

In strong winds beware of fallen trees or other debris.

If you encounter fog, turn on your fog lights.

Never drive through flooded areas.

Be aware of vulnerable road users in severe weather.

Don’t take chances.

Mental health

Mind your mental health. Taking care of our mental health and being there for others is important as we face the winter months.

Many of us experience mental health difficulties such as ongoing stress, anxiety, low mood or trouble sleeping.

If you’re worried about your mental health you can talk to your GP. They can offer support and provide information on supports that can help.

Coffee Morning & Clothes Collection for Dromagh National School

On Saturday last, October 14th 2023, the Parent Association of Dromagh National School held a very successful Coffee Morning and Clothes Collection at Dromtarriffe Community Hall. The Association were very pleased with the amount raised and wish to thank the Dromtarriffe Community and further afield for their great support. The event

was run to help give greater educational opportunities to the students by way of helping with the costs of educational trips and or expeditions. We would like to thank all the people who contributed to raffle prizes which included parents and grandparents.

This was a fantastic opportunity for us all to get to know parents, grandparents and our wonderful

community of Dromagh townland and Dromtarriffe parish. We are a small school set in the heart of Dromtarriffe parish. We look forward to exhibiting to you throughout the year what our students participate in and what this fundraiser means to us parents and in our journey towards excellence for all our pupils. A huge ‘Thank you’ for your support.

With another very busy term in Lismire National school, the children enjoyed many activities during the term. We were delighted to welcome our new junior Infants and we wish them every success in our school. The children in 4th, 5th, and 6th had a

very busy few weeks with a boys blitz and a girls blitz and great days were had by all! A visit from IRD Duhallows’ Rowan from the blue dot catchments programme was thoroughly enjoyed by the middle and senior classes on the importance of our local river

Liscarroll Go To The Dogs!

Liscarroll NS will host a Monster Auto Jumble and Dog Show at Charleville Showgrounds, Ballyhea, on Sunday November 5th 2023. Gates open at 9am.

This is always a great family fun day for all, with a display of vintage cars, tractors and trucks on the day which will be of great interest to all vintage enthusiasts.

All are welcome to display their vintage vehicles on the day. Up to fifty stalls will display their gifts and wares at the Autojumble. Hot food, teas and coffee will be served all day from early morning. There will be a full day’s entertainment on the day with country and western music from 11am - 2.30pm with Ger Lahy, Country Music DJ from Tullamore.

Other attractions will include the eagerly awaited Fun Dog Show which will start at 12pm. Classes

include: Golden Oldies(7+), Best Sausage Catcher, Best Young Handler (12 & under), Best Fancy Dress Dog, Most Handsome Boy, Prettiest Lady, Small Dog class, Large Dog class, Sweetest Pup (under 1). There is also a dog agility competition.

Prize rosettes for top three in each class. Other attractions include novelty events, wellington throwing, Minnie & Mickey Mouse,

sponge throwing, face painting and monster raffle.

Duhallow Social Farming Project Is Seeking Host Farms

Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Duhallow Social Farming provides a structured programme of farming-related activities and social inclusion opportunities for people across the spectrum of disability and mental ill health within their local communities.

The Duhallow Social Farming programme adapts to each host farm environment and the needs of each individual participant.

Host farms are supported with any maintenance and on-farm safety improvements, as well as access to relevant training opportunities.

Our farmers have taken part in a first aid and safeguarding vulnerable adults’ course, as well as an introduction to social farming online course.

Our Social Farming facilitator will aim to ensure that is a good match

between the participants interests, needs and capacity, and the farm and farming family. Farmers and participants will continue to be supported by the social farming facilitator while on their social farming journey.

Why get involved?

Social farming creates the opportunity for farmers to reconnect with their local communities by opening their farms as part of a social support system. The Social Farming programme can improve the farm work environment, with the participant providing the farmer with help and company. Social farming will also allow for learning opportunities for the farmer, giving them a better understanding of disabilities and improving their communication skills. Farm improvements may be another benefit for farmers, with IRD Duhallow assisting with on-farm safety upgrades for social farming activities.

Wear Your Youth Like An Outdated Badge

Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket Last week at work a directive came from above- we were to renew our identity badges.

A photographer was dispatched and we all duly lined up. Now, we all know the importance of photo ID but around here most people would know the last three generations of your family, so a photo seems over-zealous.

My photo ID up to last week was taken in 2000. I was 22 years old.

I wore my youth around my neck with pride, my eyes were shining with wonder- not a crows-foot to be seen. I had blonde curls in place of my grey hairs now and I was full of hope for the long career that lay

ahead of me.

But, much and all as I valued that picture, there is such an honour in having a few miles on the clock. Some of the advantages include: • A greater sense of acceptance for self and others. When we are young, we don’t know ourselves or who we think we should be, so we try desperately to fit in, to impress others. And in our youth we can be a bit judgemental - we think we know people, we don’t have the experience to see the depth of a person.

• We develop a happier outlook as we age. We can connect more meaningfully with others as we don’t worry about trivial things. We know what makes

us happy and we are not afraid to prioritise that.

With age comes experience, we gain a wisdom that we didn’t have in youth. As they say - you can’t put an old head on young shoulders.

I was also keenly aware of my colleagues and friends back in the year 2000 - and those who are not here now to renew their badge.

Life is precious and we cannot take age for granted- age is an honour that is not bestowed to everyone.

Having said all that, I may conveniently misplace my new badge and continue to fool myself that I am that 20year old - just for a little longer.

St. Charbel - Miracle Worker

St. Charbel is one of the greatest saints of the Catholic Church.

With more than 29,000 registered miracles, his help today is very much needed to bring peace to the Middle East and to end the terrible suffering of his native Lebanese people.

St. Charbel was born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf in Lebanon in 1828. His father was a mule driver who died when Youssef was only three. Two of the boy’s uncles were hermits and Youssef wanted to follow their example. As a boy, he tended the family’s flock of sheep and goats and would spend the day praying at a small grotto where he had installed an icon of the Blessed Virgin. He was influenced by the Christian example of his two uncles and was drawn to the monastic life.

He became a monk and took the name Charbel after a second century martyr. He made his final profession as a monk in 1853 St. Charbel beckons us to speak to our Heavenly Father often and to make prayer a priority in our lives.

He teaches us to seek God’s presence amongst the noise of work and to listen attentively to His gentle voice. He lived, worked and prayed in silence performing his priestly ministry and monastic duties with love. Just as he did, we too should perform our duties with love whether in the workplace, with family or generally in society. In his life of prayer and labour combined, the Eucharist was the centre of St. Charbel’s life, encouraged by Scripture and the Blessed Mother Mary. He would spend hours preparing for The Divine Liturgy, work prayerfully in the fields and immerse himself completely in adoration of The Blessed

Sacrament.

In 1875, he was given permission to live his life as a hermit. He spent the next 23 years living a solitary life.

Through prayer and penance, he offered himself as a sacrifice so that the world would return to God. He serves as a powerful reminder to pause, to find moments of silence and to tune our hearts to the presence of God who is real, alive, and loving. In these silences we discover the profound wisdom and guidance that the Lord wishes to impart to us. During his life, he detached himself from earthly things and devoted himself entirely to God. He lived in poverty, silence, obedience and abstinence.

Many people speak today of the powerful intercession of St. Charbel. He is revered for his healing miracles among Lebanese Christians who number about one million. He is a miracle saint and wonder worker, helping people who are sick, disabled, mentally ill and dying. Many miracles have been attributed to his intercession, more so perhaps than any other saint in the history of The Church.

Miracles and healings have been received by people from many religions including Catholics, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, and others beliefs.

His monastery receives thousands of letters every year from people who want to share the great news of the saint’s intercession in their lives.

He died on Christmas Eve 1898.

A few months after his death a bright light was seen surrounding his tomb, the superiors opened his tomb to find his body intact. After that day a blood like liquid flowed from his body. Experts and doctors were unable to give an explanation for the incorruptibility and flexibility.

His grave has been opened four times. The last time it was opened was in 1955 and it was noticed that his bleeding body still has its flexibility as if it were alive.

Many favours received have been attributed to Saint Charbel since his death in 1898-Many of them have been very recent. He was canonised in 1977.

We pray that St. Charbel will intercede in the Middle East and we pray that the light of Christ will shine brightly once again to bring peace to this troubled region.

Miracle prayer of St Charbel O St. Charbel, saint of great wonders, from whose miraculous body emanates the fragrance of Heaven, come to my assistance and, if it be for the glory of God and the good of my soul, obtain from God for me the grace of which I am in need. ( State your intention).
