Castlemagner Sinsir Club Annual Holiday

The group enjoyed a tour of the Wild Atlantic Way. While staying at the luxurious Galway Bay Hotel, the group embarked on a four day itinerary of adventure and friendship. On Monday, the group visited Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, followed by a trip to Galway Crystal & Heritage Centre. Entertainment was provided in the Galway Bay Hotel each night. The Tuesday trip saw the group touring Connemara, north west of Galway to the Medieval village of Cong, location of the filming and museum of The Quiet Man. The group took in Leenane, the filming location of The Field, traveling along the banks of Killary Harbour Fjord to Kylemore Abbey and Gardens.

Wednesday was a designated shopping day, scheduled to include the sights and culture of Galway city and the beauty of the Salthill Promenade near the hotel. The Thursday route home took in the Aillwee Burren experience of falconry, cheese-making and Aillwee Cave, followed by a stop-off for dancing at Lisdoonvarna, an evening meal at Durty Nellie’s, followed by a nightcap before returning home on the Thursday evening. A most memorable week was enjoyed by all!

The Competition: “Prepare an afternoon tea tray for two, with a famous Cork person as your guest and write a profile of that person in 500 words” Well done ladies.

Holy Family School

Charleville School Gives A Look At Their Range

Holy Family School is a special school which caters for children ranging in age from 4-18 years with a general moderate learning disability, children with a severe & profound learning disability, children with complex medical needs, and children on the autistic spectrum. Holy Family School is located on the campus of St. Joseph’s Foundation, Charleville.

At Holy Family School, we try to meet the many and varied needs of

all our pupils. We offer a differentiated primary curriculum for pupils (4-18 yrs) with a moderate or a severe and/ or profound learning disability.

Pupils aged 12-15 yrs follow the Level 1 and Level 2 Junior cycle programmes, while pupils aged 15-18 yrs follow a programme that emphasises Independence training including taking part in programmes such as Gaisce – The President’s award.

We have a thriving school led by an excellent and dedicated staff, supported by a dedicated parents association and encouraged by a supportive Board of Management under the patronage of St. Joseph’s Foundation.

Working together we are committed to continuing the development of an exceptional school, and giving the best possible education to all the pupils entrusted in our care.

Holy Family school offers a wide range of facilities such as a Sensory Gym which includes a wheelchair swing, Nest swing, Deep Pressure rollers, miniature climbing wall, Punch bag and trampolines.

We developed a new Multi-Sensory room, which will contain many specialised pieces of equipment to help meet the sensory needs of our pupils.

In addition to the aforementioned facilities pupils in HFS have access to swimming in the hydro therapy pool on the campus of St.Joseph’s Foundation and pony riding at Liskennett Equine Centre. For those pupils who have difficulty accessing Liskennett Equine Centre the ponies come to SJF two days a week where pupils get the opportunity to interact with the horses and benefit from the therapeutic effect of being in the company of such animals.

Ariel Holy Family school is lucky to have a My Canine Companion school therapy dog, Ariel. She assists pupils transitioning from bus to classroom each day and accompanies them on walks or she simply enjoys being in the classroom.

Holy Family School Ponies HFS is extremely lucky to be able to access ponies from Liskennett Equine Centre, both in Liskennett and on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Foundation. Earlier this year SJF received funding which allowed them to set up stables on campus and bring the ponies to SJF campus, for an hour, 2 days a week. Some pupils may have difficulty travelling to Liskennett for any of many reasons, but being able to have contact with the ponies on campus has proven to be of benefit to all. Teachers report an improvement in behaviour & for many pupils, a decrease in anxiety levels, which can only have a positive effect on well-being for any child/adult.

Gaisce Gaisce is the most prestigious youth award in Ireland and is a challenge to young people from the president of Ireland, Mr. Michael D. Higgins to dream big and realise their potential. Holy Family school aims to introduce the Bronze Gaisce Award as part of the Senior Cycle Programme for those pupils who would benefit from taking part in such a programme.

Pupils this year who completed their Bronze Gaisce Award: Rory Winship, Cian O Shaughnessy, Eoin O Connell, Katie McGrath, Evan Meagher & Luke Sheedy complete 10Km on the Ballyhoura hills over two days.

Level 1 and Level 2 Learning Programmes for the Junior Certificate Holy Family School offers Level 1 & Level 2 Learning Programmes for pupils in the 12-15 year age group. Level 1 programmes target the very specific group of students with general learning disabilities in the range of lower functioning moderate to severe and profound categories, while the Level 2 Learning Programme targets the very specific group of students with general learning disabilities in the higher functioning moderate and low functioning mild categories. Both programmes are capable of personalisation to suit the individual needs of the target group of students.

Fr. Jerry’s Golden Jubilee

A great celebration was held in Stuake on Saturday, October 7th to mark the golden jubilee of the ordination of the local parish priest, Fr Jerry O’Riordan. Large crowds of parishioners as well as friends and family of Fr Jerry attended the jubilee mass and then proceeded across the road to the Community Centre for refreshments. This event was organised and financed by the various clubs in the parish.

A papal blessing, a beautiful set of garden furniture, as well as a portrait were presented to Fr O’Riordan on behalf of the clubs, and a fabulous cake baked specially for the event was cut to mark the momentous occasion. He was very humbled by the huge turnout and spoke of his fondness for the people of the parish remarking “Sure I’m mad about ye really”.

We wish Fr Jerry many more happy and healthy years in his role in the priesthood.

Rockchapel Fashion Show

On the night of Friday the 6th, Rockchapel Community centre held the annual Rockchapel National School Parent’s Association fundraising fashion show.

A lovely night was had by all!

The wonderful local models – 7 ladies and 5 gentlemen – wowed the audience with some beautiful clothes from O’Shea’s of Newmarket, Lady Lydia’s of Kanturk, Noìrìn’s of Millstreet, East 73rd Castleisland and Ballybunion, Dudes and Devia’s of Castleisland, and Heavenly Gift Abbeyfeale provided fabulous accessories.

Minx and Wild Pair of Charleville had a stand in the hall showing off their wonderful stock.

There were great spot prizes on the night ranging from hotel vouchers to 25 bags of turf!

It was a very successful fundraiser, and the funds will be put to very good use in the school.

There is a wish list that will be worked through, starting with new Goal posts and nets, basketball nets, and trip to the panto to name but a few.

Help To Buy A House I

Councillor Bernard Moynihan was joined by Senator Mary Firzpatrick as well as Councillor Ian Doyle and Shane Murphy of Ashgrove Renewables for an information night - “Help To Buy A House”. This night focused on getting the word out about a variety of schemes available as well as grants, loans, and general info.

The session was well received, and across this spread, we’ve included some information on the schemes and grants mentioned on the night.

Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant

Provides funding to refurbish vacant and derelict homes. It can also be used to renovate properties that have not been used as residential properties before. You can get the grant if you’re renovating to rent or occupy the property yourself. Grants available are up to €50,000 and up to €70,000 if the property is derelict.

Eligibility: • Property must be vacant for 2 years or more. You will not qualify if the property has been left unreasonably or purposely vacant so you can get the grant.

• Must have been built before 2008 • You must own it or be in the process of buying it • You must live in the property as your principal private residence when the work is completed OR make it available to rent, Note: If you’re going to rent the property when the work is done you must register the tenancy.

• must have tax clearance from Revenue and your tax affairs must be in order • you must have paid any applicable local property tax • must not be a registered company or developer.

Help To Buy Scheme

Helps first time buyers purchase a newly built house or apartment. It can also be received for once off self build homes.

This scheme only applies to properties costing €500,000 or less It gives a refund of the income tax and deposit interest retention tax (DIRT) you’ve paid in Ireland for the four years before you apply Eligibility: • must be a first time buyer who buys or self builds a residential home by 31/12/24 • If you’re buying or building with someone else, they must also be a first time buyer • must be fully tax compliant for four years immediately before your claim • must complete online form 12 (PAYE) and form 11 (self assessed) for each of those 4 years, You must also pay any outstanding taxes.

• Must be registered for Revenue’;s online “My Account” service if you pay tax through PAYE or “ROS” if you’re a self assessed tax payer • Must be a new residential property. Must never have been used or have been suitable for use as a residential property before. If it was non residential but has been converted, it may qualify for HTB. • The market value must be €500,000 or less. If the house has been subsidised (ex. if you’re buying a home under Local Authority Affordable Purchase Scheme) you must use the market value.

• If you’re building, the valuation must be €500,000 or less. The valuation is approved by your mortgage provider and is valued at the time of the mortgage is entered into., This includes the cost of the site.

• If you’re buying your new home, the contractor or develope4r must be approved by revenue (a list is available on Revenue.ie) • If you’re building, you will need a solicitor registered with revenue as “HTB Approved” to verify your HTB claim.

• You must live in the property for at least five years from the date it is habitable, More info on Revenue.ie

Tenant In Situ Scheme

If you’re a social housing tenant, and your private landlord wants to sell the home you’re renting. The local authority can buy the home and you can continue to rent it from the local authority instead.

Eligibility: • be a first-time buyer with the exception of applicants qualifying under the “Fresh Start” principle and those who have inherited residential property • be aged between 18 and 70 years • be in continuous employment for a minimum of two years as the primary earner, or be in continuous employment for a minimum of one year as a secondary earner on a joint application (see Temporary Amendments in Light of Economic Impacts of COVID-19 on our FAQ page) • as a single applicant have an annual gross income of not more than €70,000 (gross) • as joint applicants have an annual gross income of not more than €85,000 (gross) • submit two years certified accounts if self-employed • provide proof of insufficient mortgage offers of finance from two regulated financial providers • not be a current or previous owner of residential property in or outside the Republic of Ireland, unless you are a Fresh Start applicant or have owned a property through inheritance • applicants are required to declare that they are first time buyers. Fresh start principal

Applicants who purchased or built a dwelling together with a spouse, civil partner, or person with whom they were in an intimate and committed relationship, if this relationship ends and they have divested themselves of their interest in the property.

If you have previously purchased or built a residential property but have divested of this through insolvency or bankruptcy proceedings, you’re eligible, However, a separate assessment of credit worthiness will be conducted by the underwriters. This applies when the applicant has existed the insolvency/ bankruptcy proceedings.

This aims to bridge the gap between the deposit and mortgage and the price or build cost of a new home within property price ceilings.

In this scheme, 10% ownership of the property is kept by the scheme. This ownership remains regardless of the property value changes until you buy back the equity share is full, including outstanding charges.

At time of writing, the participating lenders are Allied Irish Banks PLC (including AIB, Haven Mortgages, and EBS), Bank of Ireland Group PLC, and Permanent TSB PLC.

*For self builds, equity in your site can contribute to your deposit.

Property Eligibility • Must be a qualifying house or apartment OR self build on a privately owned site OR a house or apartment you’re currently renting and now looking to purchase having received a notice of termination from your landlord as the landlord is putting it on the market.

I’d Be No Good At That

Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket Imagine the scene; a lady returns from work in the evening and observes the clothes on the clothes line. Haphazardly there, half on, half off. Items on the ground being eaten by the dogs, grass stained and needing a re-wash. On investigation, the teenage son, charged with the job of hanging said clothes on the line was questioned about the lack of pegs- the reply “you told me to hang out the clothes, you never said use pegs”.

This scene is a classic example of weaponised incompetence. If you haven’t heard of this term, it is also known as strategic

incompetence. It is the deliberate attempt to appear incompetent in order to avoid certain tasks, to not be asked to do those tasks again.

If you live with a teenager, you will understand this concept. The main reason for this behaviour is to pass the responsibility on to another person.

This type of action can be very frustrating if you are the person who has to take up the slack, if you are the person who ends up having to do all the jobs. Two ways to manage this in your home can be open communication and setting boundaries.

Communicating your needs and the consequences of these actions can be a good starting point. Boundaries are beneficial for all involved, allowing mutual

respect and avoiding anger and resentment.

So, now that you have heard of this term, you can be aware of it.

You can repeat your instructions and keep giving the jobsespecially for the teens.

The reason that Echinacea is so effective against cold, flu and covid-19 viruses is because it contains a compound which binds itself to the receptors which viruses want to bind to and that hinders the infection process. The Echinacea prevents the viruses attaching or at least reduces how many virus receptors are available to it, reducing the severity.

A randomised, controlled clinical study was conducted over a 6-month period (Nov 2020 – May 2021) in Bulgaria*, where there was a low uptake of COVID-19

Winter Walks are Back!

It was too warm for jumpers!

The IRD Walking group is back to our winter walk series, we started off this series walking the Reanahoun Loop in the Mullagaherierks on Saturday 7th of October at 11am. It was a lovely dry morning – no need for rain jackets! The loop is just under 6km and took the group just over an hour. The loop is at the Northerly side of the Mullaghereirks and starts at one of the highest points in the area, because of this starting the walk you have lovely views down towards Rowls Lanford. All the loops around this area follow forestry track and can be walked in runners so are lovely place to get your stroll in away from traffic. We finished off the walk with the usual hot drop and biscuits.

The walking group is a lovely way to start off the weekend. Once a month on a Saturday, we meet at 11am, go for a walk on one of

the trails in Duhallow and socialise over a hot drink after. For those of you who want to join on our next walk, we will be walking a section of the Duhallow Way on Saturday 18th of November at 11am. We will be walking the Duhallow way starting at Carrigagulla along the Inchamay and Boggeragh sections of the trail as far as Mossy Beds.

This walk is new for many so we will be meeting at the Kerryman’s Table Crossroads in Upper Aubane and driving to the start together.

This walk is moderate, this section of the trail has some small climbs and an uneven surface where it is rough underfoot, hiking boots are needed. Walk is free, but registration is essential, please register so that I know how many people will be joining and so that I have a contact for everyone in case of any changes. IRD Duhallow was delighted to host the highly anticipated Carers Information Support Forum on the 12th of October of which IRD Duhallow will be hosting more in the coming months under the current Dormant Accounts for Family Carers Funding Programme.

The format of Forums will promotes inclusivity and removes barriers for those who may not wish to commit to a course but

a rather interested in attending standalone events. These standalone events seek to build on one another in order to provide comprehensive information and improve Carers employment outlook, self-care and personal development as well as information sharing. We were delighted to welcome CBT Therapist Sharon Clernon who spoke on how to build confidence, Margaret Birtley HSE Public Health Nurse on Respite Supports, Newmarket Social Welfare Office Manager Colette Vaughan on Carers entitlements

as well as IRD Duhallow Social Farming Coordinator Rachel Budd on the Social Farming Project and IRD Duhallow Development Officer Brighid-Ide Walsh on the Strive group.

This Forums event was delivered in the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket with delicious treats and lunch served from Duhallow Community Food Services afterwards.
