HELP WANTED Crann Centre Seeks Volunteers

The Crann Centre is a registered charity established to provide support to people of all ages and their families living with a neuro-physical disability. It delivers a holistic suite of services for individuals and their families to support and empower them to live their best lives. An environmental conservation area has been developed at Monymusk Stud, Kanturk. The grounds are fully wheelchair accessible to deliver a truly inclusive nature conservation experience for those with disabilities,

as well as the wider community. The conservation area is working towards an opening date of April 18th (Easter bank holiday Monday).

The Crann Centre is now actively recruiting volunteers for this facility at Monymusk Stud.

Run, Macra, Run!

Freemount Macra’s Annual Tractor Run was held on Sunday 12th December. The day was a huge success with over 110 tractors attending. Over €7,000 was raised for a very worthy charity- The Irish Community Air Ambulance.

Freemount Macra would like to say a huge thank you to all who supported this event – everyone who brought a tractor, donated on the day, stewards that helped out and all those who sponsored

prizes for the raffle. A big thanks also to Lismire Community for the use of the hall yard. The Best Dressed Tractor prize on the day went to Kevin Murphy of Tullylease. Raffle prize winners on the day included: Nathan O’Sullivan, Niamh O’Sullivan, Ger McDonnell, Finbarr Taylor, Rachel McCarthy, Pawel Dlubala, Jack Jones, Michael Hayes and Eamon Moynihan. The Tureencahill Tractor Run on January 16th was held in Memory of Noreen O’Connor Cronin. They enjoyed a fabulous turnout with a host of fantastic vehicles. The run was a huge success in remembering Noreen and in donations in her memory to Kerry Hospice Foundation and Comfort for Chemo Kerry. Noreen is remembered fondly as a dedicated and loving mother, wife, daughter, and friend, a chef, an artist, and above all, a woman of passion, excitement, and kindness.

IRD Duhallow’s Winter walk will be taking place in Shrone on Saturday the 12th February at 11am at Shrone Church.

LEADER in the community: Spotlight on Cullen Pipe band

Cullen Pipe Band was founded in 1941 and is deeply embedded in the famous Duhallow musical tradition our area is so very proud of.

The band provides an important forum to enhance the lives of the local community. It has developed a high standard music program where tuition is provided to members weekly and at weekend workshops throughout the year. With this, the band has a proven track record for organising and implementing training programs for its members.

#SICAPstories - Introduction to Feng Shui

By STEPHANIE MOYNIHAN In 2021, IRD Duhallow was delighted to introduce the concept of Feng Shui to its communities by offering an introductory workshop with Interior Designer and Feng Shui practitioner Edel Cleary under the SICAP Community Education action.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese traditional practice focusing on the use of energy flow in our environment.

Learners were introduced to concepts in relation to how to reduce stressors in their environments and how to introduce elements to achieved greater balance, creating a more productive and peaceful environment. Further, workshop participants learned about

the importance of creating a connection with space and how, for example, essential oils can play a key role in creating comfort, ease and overall well-being.

This exciting workshop was delivered virtually via Zoom with loads of practical tips and tricks to improve one’s homes.

Look for companies rather than just jobs Is there is a certain company that you would like to work for? If this is the case, it could be a great idea to search the company’s website or LinkedIn page directly for job opportunities. Have you ever thought about writing a speculative application? What this means is to pro-actively send a cover letter and CV to a company you wish to work for asking them to keep you in mind for future vacancies that may arise over time.

Use your network Make use of your connections to help you in your job search. Many job opportunities are identified by simply speaking with friends, family or neighbours to see if they have come across any suitable positions.

Focus on the basics Ensure that your CV is up to date and that you have draft cover letter which you can easily be tweaked to suit the roles you are applying

for. Does you LinkedIn profile need an overhaul? Do you have an outfit for an interview ready should you be invited at short notice? And have you thought about who you could ask to give you a reference?

This is the time to focus on these job search basics.

Grant for Apprentice Employers An annual grant of €2,000 per apprentice is being introduced in 2022, announced Apprenticeship.

Employers who employ apprentices on one of the 37 apprenticeships which have been established since 2016 and which do not attract payment of off-thejob training allowances will be payable on this scheme.

The scheme will also include new apprenticeships introduced in 2022 and subsequent years.

Employers will be eligible to receive €2,000 annually for each registered apprentice.

An accessible system is in development to support the process, to include payment arrangements plus terms and conditions. Further details for eligible employers will follow through January.

New Year, Old Me

Through the haze of guidelines changing, restrictions changing, lives changing, one thing hasn’t.

That dreaded inevitable question on the horizon; “What’s your New Year’s resolution?”

The new year brings with it an attitude of group revival; the world rolls into the New Year together, everyone has a new leaf to turn over.

Let’s not leave it merely implied; the expected resolution is “lose weight”. People take a number and say “I’ll lose this much”. But they don’t do it for the right reasons.

They say “I don’t look like this person does” or “I should look like that person”.

There’s a pressure in our societal and media landscape that benefits from self hatred. It thrives on creating false norms and unattainable standards. And then makes you pay to chase the unattainable. New stock is packed with workout clothes, gym equipment, and fad diet books,

and it feels like everyone is doing it. Everyone except you. At that point you’ll force yourself and hate it or you’ll say it’s too late and put it off and hate that too.

But there’s a secret; you don’t have to do it. At all.

Everyone is given a different leaf. We are living through unprecedented times, and our mental and physical health has been on some kind of hellish rollercoaster; it’s hard to feel okay when nothing is okay.

The added pressure of “lose x amount of weight”, “do this thing a hundred times a day”, “get beach ready”, what does it really give you?

It’s not bad to want these things; being healthy is something we should strive towards, but it’s in HOW we get there.

It’s not about following a celebrity diet, a 5am 7 day a week training routine that makes you wince to read. Work with people who want to help all of you. People who want to help you feel good for you.

Siobhan O’Sullivan of SOS Fitness spoke of working with people beyond the fitness level, taking on the reasons for their fears or their habits.

That’s sustainable. That’s healthy.

It’s not about self hatred, it’s about love. Don’t give in to a society that makes you hate yourself; love yourself more because they won’t.

Take care of yourself right, at your pace, from a place of love rather than loathing. If you do make a resolution, it can be any time; new month, new week, new day.

Promise to get out for more walks

this month.

Promise to drink more water this week.

Promise to try to love yourself more today.

Loving yourself means taking care how you need, not how the world says you should. Your body is uniquely your own, it doesn’t need exactly what some celebrity has. It needs you to listen.

What our minds need is just as important as our body.

Why do you want to change?

Imagine that change, imagine you after that change.

Does it fix anything?

Will you be happy, truly happy?

Or when you get there will you berate yourself further, find a new blemish and pick at that until it bleeds?

Looking the way a picture or a stranger says you should will not make you happy. You will hit that wall and wonder why you’re not.

Self hatred is not motivation. It’s a festering infection.

Work with people who’ll teach you not to hate yourself but people who’ll find what you need. People who can teach you how to find that other thing, that thing beyond “look like them”. People who understand that health is more than a number on the scales.

You are worthy of love regardless of numbers. And accepting your own love is a great place to start.

Brigid: Saint, Goddess, An

The New Year can be hard to face with Ireland’s damp, dreary welcome. Spring, though right around the corner, feels lost in grey clouds and frozen puddles.

But in this dim landscape, colour is waking; fresh snowdrops rear their heads from sleepy green pillows, crocus twirl to their spring attire, colourful crowns of yellow, white, purple, and daffodils stretch their sunshine head skyward, daring those who pass to avoid smiling at the pop of colour amid the chill of the morning commute.

Spring is rebirth, rejuvenation, but as the bouquet’s cousins in the crop field know, it is also preparation. Brigid brings us into Spring and embodies these and so much more.

Brigid as Goddess Brigid was a goddess of prechristian Ireland and a member of Tuatha Dé Danan - the tribe of the gods of Danu. At this time, they were seen less as creators and more as ancestors. She was daughter of the Dagda and the Morrigan - a triple Goddess - and her array of skills and blessings came from this parentage.

She, like her mother, was a triple Goddess - a deity made up of distinct figures united as one individual. Unlike the Morrigan who is most often known as the unification of three sisters with unique names, all aspects of Brigid share her name. She brings Spring with a cast of her cloak, and is linked with healing, fertility, the good health of animals, and good land and crops. But her reach is beyond that. Rebirth is found in spring, but it’s also in the ashes of the phoenix, in the birth by fire.

kindles poets and artists alike. In this connection, this bond of destruction and creation in flame, there is a duality to her, a sense that unity is our true nature. She was strong, a natural leader, and at the same time, loving. She was not unlike a kindly grandmother leading her children through the dark to spring’s dawn.

In truth, no one knows for sure.

Perhaps St. Brigid was named for the goddess and pursued a Catholic life. Perhaps she is the goddess herself. What it comes down to is belief.

There is often overlap in stories of the two; both pulled out an eye, both had expanding cloaks, and both empowered women and protected them in a time that it was difficult to do so.

Curiously, even their feast days and blessings are welcomed the same way.

Brigid to you will be different to Brigid to the next person, but both can comfort, protect, and enrich lives.

February 1st The celebration of Imbolc and St. Brigid’s day fall together, though this has not always been the case.

Imbolc as an ancient festival often fell two weeks either side of the 1st of February; it was dependent of sheep’s lambing and crop growth.

At it’s core, it is the celebration of spring arriving. Offerings were made to the earth with porridge poured in water and milk poured on the ground. To invoke Brigid’s blessing, clothes or fabric were left outside before bed on the eve of her day - January 31st - and a special meal was had. Often this included foods such as colcannon, barmbrack, and bannocks to name but a few, and some was kept aside for Brigid. Some families recreated Brigids arrival by walking around the house three times with a group of rushes in hand before knocking. Others left the ashes in the fire to accept her message of luck or lack there of. Many of these rituals are shared between the goddess and saint, further blurring the line between the two.

Psychiatric Nurse

There are a lot of words now that we use every day that had different meanings, or no meaning at all, two years ago. Words like “variants”, “social distancing”, “isolation periods”, and “antigen tests”. Two years ago, we never heard of close contacts or had to book PCR tests. We didn’t know what Omicron was, and most of us had never heard of NPHET. Fast forward a few short years, and these words and concepts are part of our everyday vocabulary.

Words can be triggering; we take a lot from the language we hear and what people say- have you ever wondered what people meant when they said things or looked for hidden meaning in what you heard? Words, news reports, or

articles in the paper can cause a lot of fear, worry, and anxietyusually because they report the worst case scenarios. We take them as facts, believing what we hear, and our stress levels rise as we worry about the outcome.

So the obvious solution would be to cut down on our intake of news and to limit the amount of information we seek, especially with the facts and the information changing daily. This, of course, is easier said than done, as we feel we need information to keep ourselves safe and prepared.

So, maybe we could focus on positive new words. Words that we may not have considered before all this began. Words like “self-care”; caring for not just our physical health but our mental health by taking time for ourselves, recharging our depleted batteries,

and reducing our stress and anxiety. Other words to focus on, words like “community”; before the pandemic, we were busier, the world was larger, and we were always off somewhere. Now we know that a sense of community is invaluable, that all we really need is on our door step. If you play bingo in the garden with the neighbours or you pick litter with the local tidy towns, the sense of purpose is invaluable at this time.

So, keep an eye on the words you hear, the reports you read.

If you find yourself stressing or worrying because of what you have heard, try to focus on positive words and more positive information. It is there, you just might need to look for it.

This means when you do put your head on the pillow, you can’t switch off. When you do get to sleep, you find yourself waking regularly. Could be something to do with that 6pm coffee still being in your system 12 hours later or your brain still being active from the stimulation of your screens.

Gathering Up The Photons

“How is it that when I use my telescope or binoculars to look at the night sky, I can’t see the lovely colours that I see in photographs?”

This is a question I often get asked, particularly at this time of year, when new telescopes that were glistening and shining under the Christmas tree a month ago seem to have lost some of their sparkle. Unfortunately, there is nothing wrong with the telescope, it is simply a matter of size. Well, size and physics. All light is made up of photons and the more photons you are able to gather, the better, brighter and more detailed the image you will see at the eyepiece or in the photograph.

What that means when it comes to telescopes and binoculars is that the bigger the better. The bigger the main lens (Objective lens) or main mirror is, the more photons or light it can gather and the brighter or more detailed the image at the eyepiece is. However,

Time, patience, and knowing where or what to look at, is often more than half the battle.

No matter how big the telescope, you will struggle to see any colours at the eyepiece in nebulae (clouds of gas and dust). Planets do show colours, as do stars, and even the

moon has fifty shades of grey. To this day, in spite of having a couple of telescopes to choose from, I still grab my binoculars and head out the door to look at the sky.

Photographing the night sky is a different matter. Chances are any half decent camera should be able to manage it. Again, it is all about light gathering power.

For photography, this is not really about big lenses, it is more about how long we leave the sensor (film in the old days) open to gather up photons. The problem is, that as the shutter in a camera stays open the sky above rotates. That’s all very well and good for wide angle photography where it is not so noticeable. But try and take a zoomed In photo and you will get a blurry mess. The trick here is to put the camera on a tripod that can track the stars as they move across the night sky.

Many of the new smart phones are quite advanced and have astrophotography or night modes built in. Try it yourself. Keep the phone as still as possible or better yet, rest it against something or mount on a tripod. You’ll be amazed at the results.

A Look Back In Time

Through the years In this section, we take a photographic look back at IRD Duhallow and its involvement and relationship with the region through the years.

This issue - 2012

November is the month of the Holy Souls, a month that is devoted to praying for all the souls in purgatory. Graveyards are very much frequented during this month and so here, we go back to 2012. IRD Duhallow through support of LEADER finding and support from Cork County Council enlisted Eachtra Archaeological to complete a three month community training programme focusing on Duhallow's Historic Graves.

This project linked with local communities allowing them to learn how to document elements of our heritage, local history and genealogy. 14 historic graveyards were surveyed and community volunteers learned how to care, conserve and record historic graves. The community volunteers did trojan work and importantly the work has been digitised for future preservation through the online facility - historicgraves.com which details each graveyard surveyed with its GPS location, pictures of individual headstones and importantly inscriptions of headstones some of which could not have been read without the specialised techniques used to extract the information.

Alexander Mackendrick’s black comedy masterpiece The Ladykillers (1955) is an Ealing comedy gold standard that’s still a darkly funny delight.

The British film and television production company, Ealing Studios, produced a lot of gems throughout the 20th century. In the post-war period, the company embarked on a series of comedies which became the studio’s hallmark. These were often lightly satirical and were seen to reflect aspects of British character and society. They really were on a roll between 1948 and 1955 culminating in one of the greats; The Ladykillers.

It follows five criminals who, in preparing plans for a robbery, rent rooms from an octogenarian widow

under the pretext that they are classical musicians.

And what a cast playing these criminals; Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, Danny Green, Jack Warner, with their leader being Alec Guinness. The sweet old lady in question is Katie Johnson, a veteran stage actress all her life.

What an IMDB page she has - this movie and that’s it! The producers were worried that her old age would hinder the production (she was 76) but she delivered. She passed away two years later leaving a beautiful performance for

The movie is lean - it wastes no time in telling its tale and delivering the laughs. Comedies today are waaay too long and way too in love with bad improvising instead of carrying out a well written and tight script. The writer, William Rose, claimed to have dreamt the entire film and merely had to remember the details when he awoke. Some dream.

The Ladykillers can be seen as a sibling to a previous recommendation - The Trouble With Harry. It could be mistaken for an Alfred Hitchcock work but Mackendrick holds his own. He went on to make more classics which I may feature in the future. A black comedy done to perfection, it’s influence still endures.

The Conversion of St. Paul

One of the great feast days we celebrate during the month of January is the Conversion of St. Paul.

We have seen many conversion stories in the Gospel- Zacchaeus who was a chief Tax Collector and was changed when he encountered Jesus. Likewise, St. Matthew who left his post collecting taxes for the Romans, and apostles James and John who left their fishing boat and followed Jesus. But there is none to compare with the story of the conversion of St. Paul.

Saul, as he was known before his conversion, was on his way to Damascus with an army, gathering up followers of Christ to put them in prison and put them to death.

He was involved in the stoning of St. Stephen, the first Christian Martyr. He was a pharisee and very motivated in his pursuit of the followers of Jesus.

We read in The Acts of The

Apostles, Chapter 9, how he was struck blind and fell from his horse. A bright light flashed and he heard the voice of Jesus ask him, “Saul, Saul! Why do you persecute me?”

Vacancy: Rural Community Health Worker

1 X full time (39 hour weekly) position for a duration of 3 years with a 6 month review Location: Duhallow area of North Cork IRD Duhallow, James O Keeffe Institute Newmarket.

Job Description

This is a new and exciting non clinical post for someone who engages well with people and enjoys engaging with people, has knowledge of the broad range of supports and services provided by community and voluntary organisations has an interest in Community Mental Health and works from an awareness of the social determinants of health. The post will be managed by IRD Duhallow. The post holder will also have a reporting relationship to the employing organisation ) in the local area as well as a local steering group comprised of local representation/stakeholders with repesentatives from CKHC HSE. The posts are funded by CKCH HSE Mental Health Services and are administer and supported through Cork North Community Work Department CKCH HSE.

The Overall Aim of the Post

The Rural Community Health Work post will form part of a team of rural community health workers across rural areas of North Cork inclusive of IRD Duhallow, Ballyhoura Development and Avondhu Blackwater working with and enhancing existing services to support the development and delivery of a Community Health Programme locally, which is modelled a an existing model of a Community Health Worker The role of a Community Health Worker focuses on improving the health and lifestyle of a community through a series of health focused initiatives that build on existing services and facilities.

The areas of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention in the rural communities will also be supported by this post.

•Suicide Prevention: explores ways of mitigating the risk of suicide in the community i.e. by empowering people to be aware of and encouraged to engage in activities that contribute to their overall mental, physical health and wellbeing.

•Suicide Intervention: seeks to inform members of the community with up to date and relevant information in how to access support services for themselves or others who are emotionally vulnerable and maybe having thoughts of suicide – it also includes informing the community of the range of mental health/well-being/suicide prevention training modules that are available both face to face and online.

•Suicide postvention: offers anyone bereaved or affected by suicide information on the supports available i.e. via the (SBLO service) – Suicide Bereavement Liaison service – Samaritans etc. ‘Lighting the Way’ bereavement resource – postvention also seeks to prepare professionals in the local area by the establishment of designated postvention network that would work together to create a localised postvention policy that is enacted after a critical incident has taken place – the formation of this postvention network is supported by targeted online postvention training for designated and established groups – to support the community in the aftermath of suspected suicide.

Roles and Responsibilities

Overall role: The Rural Community Health Worker Service is a collaborative initiative between Local Development Partnership Groups and the CKCH HSE. The service aims to link persons into local activities within their communities to improve their health and well-being. The role is to develop and deliver Community Health Initiatives specific to the needs of the local population and area.

Principal responsibilities

1. To undertake holistic needs assessments and work in partnership with the individuals and groups in the community to increase overall health and well-being.

2. Development of a series of health focused initiatives in partnership with local community, organisations, steering group etc as per the needs of the local community and population groups 3. Liaise with other CHWs and projects in terms of shared learning and development of best practice models 4. To establish and maintain effective liaison with stakeholders including health services (e.g Health & Social care professionals, GPs , PHN, Community Mental Health Teams etc ), voluntary, social and education resources, attending relevant meetings as necessary and engaging with Community Health Network Structures as appropriate.

5. To asset map the resources and activities available, and to identify gaps through working in partnership with all voluntary and community organisations to build a comprehensive database of local resources to support the service delivery.

6. To ensure information on sources of voluntary and community support is up to date at all times to enable effective and accurate signposting and linking of individuals with services.

7. To work with local services/stakeholders to bring awareness of the service and its focus on promotion of health and wellbeing in the local area.

8. Work closely with the service steering group which will include representation from all stakeholder groups to support the on-going development, monitoring and evaluation of the programme.

9. Provide bi-monthly comprehensive outcome focused reports detailing the progress of the service 10. To keep records of your work and adhere to confidentiality, information sharing protocols and provide monitoring information as required.

11. To work flexibly as required by the service and to take part in relevant meetings and events to promote, support and celebrate the work of the service.

12. To provide a personalised, responsive and flexible service to all persons accessing the service.
