MOC The Glen Theatre Drama Group The Glen Theatre Drama Group are performing The Cause, written by local writer Sean O’Deadaigh and directed by Tadhg O’Keeffe and Jane Pigott. Set in the War of Independence it follows the kidnap and interrogation of a British Army officer by two Irish Republican Army Volunteers in the aftermath of the burning of Cork in 1921.

Cork County Council Community Development Initiative 2021 - 2022

Chairperson of IRD Duhallow, Breeda Moynihan Cronin has welcomed the recent announcement of a new call for funding under Cork County Councils Community Development Initiative 2021-2022. “IRD Duhallow is delighted to be a partner in the roll out of this year’s community development initiative.

This is a prime opportunity for smaller community projects in the Duhallow / Lee Valley areas to apply for funding.” This fund is administered by the LCDC’s in partnership with the Local Development Companies including, IRD Duhallow.

Applications are being accepted online on www.yourcouncil.ie and the closing date is the 17th of September at 4pm. In order to be eligible communities must not have previously completed an Expression of Interest form, or full LEDER application for the sameproject or any element of the same project.

A Nursing Home Experience

At the best of times, I am a poor sleeper. All my life I have found it difficult to fall asleep. I read an article in weekend magazine on “Aids to get to sleep”. It is generally accepted that poor sleepers take the worries and troubles of the day to bed with them.

The article suggested having a jotter and pencil on the locker beside the bed and when we have given up all hope of getting to sleep sit up switch on the light and write your worries into the jotter. Then switch off the light and presto you fall into a deep sleep.

I practiced just that, and after shaving and getting dressed, I read the stuff. I end up saying “You blinking idiot how could such trifles keep you awake?”

Some nights afterwards sleeplessness would return, I’d sit up and write my annoyances with the same result. That situation lasted during my 40 years teaching and 20 years active retirement. Now I am consigned to a dream nursing home, the tender loving care of the nurses, carers and catering staff is exemplary. I feel I am loved and cherished. I have had to forfeit my activities because of old age disability. I do my best to live a peaceful and prayerful life.

Last night’s experience has me singing for joy. I go to bed at 11.30 every night; the nurse gives me a prescribed sleeping tablet. When I get into bed I lie on my back and spend about 15 minutes recalling the day’s activities. Then I lie on my left side and try prayer and other ways of getting to know God better.

Last night when I was in that position I asked God to give me one good night’s sleep, that will last until morning. I turned on my other side and the tablet did its job. I woke up feeling ready to do a day’s work. I switched on the light to find it was 2.00 a.m. I turned and twisted and composed myself for sleep but no sleep came. Eventually I went for a restless sleep and woke at 4.00 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. I felt God had disappointed me and told him so. Then I recalled two phrases about God “Malachy I created you, you belong to me, you are mine. I need you to come to me as you are”. As I was reflecting I fell into a blissful sleep. When I awoke at rising time there was a carer with a cup of tea and a sweet smile…..This had never happened to me before in the nursing home. I said to God “You sure have a sense of humour!”

LEADER in the community

#SICAPstories: Personal Development

Personal Development courses in IRD Duhallow are funded through SICAP. These courses are in a group setting but the work done is personal and unique for each participant. This means, there is a lot of personal space within the group, for people to reflect on their lives and how the course content applies to their own unique circumstances.

Life Coach & Personal Development facilitator; Sarah Jane Grunfeld states: I have the real joy of seeing people grow and make positive changes in their lives. I am always amazed to see the wide array of different outcomes people have, from the course. Some people really overhaul their lives in many areas including their relationships, habits, their living environment, their career, and their relationship with themselves. Common outcomes have included feeling more positive about life, increased

confidence, developing self-worth, developing skills in setting and maintaining personal boundaries, being able to say ‘No’ effectively, developing new supportive habits and eliminating unhealthy ones, decluttering and eliminating outworn and outgrown ways of living and setting effective goals. It is very common for people to have an increased understanding of who they are and what they want.

Of course, knowing this makes it much easier to set goals and go after that.

People often worry that they would have to share a lot of personal information and that really isn’t the case. There is some space for sharing, for those that

want to do that, but it is optional.

Personal Development can and does benefit everyone, at all ages, and stages of life. When people ask me if Personal Development is for them, I say well if you have a human brain and want to be more effective in your life then the answer is yes, it is most definitely for you!

Some feedback from recent participants: “The course has helped me to look at myself and make changes in how I live my life.” “I found personal development course outstanding and the tutor a wonderful calm teacher.” “I learned ways to deal with emotion and ways of dealing with stress and ways to improve achievements.”

Retaining the innate historic educational focus of the building Tureencahill Community Group have responded to the varying needs of the local community through hosting diverse training activities provided with the needs of the community in mind.

For active retirees, the centre has become an important central point for gatherings, while for other groups it has become an important location from which to broadcast and show case the cultural attributes of the Sliabh Luachra area. In recent weeks the highly regarded Tureencahill Summer School broadcast its classes from the community centre over the internet. Tureencahill Community

Group continues to work to improve the facilities in the centre and is now designated digital hub utilised by local students and those who need broadband access. A recent LEADER project undertaken has seen the replacement of each of the 35 windows in the building.

This project was undertaken with the comfort of the community centre’s patrons in mind ensuring that the building remains a warm and inviting space for future activities. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and following public health guidelines, face to face activities have been greatly curtailed in the centre, however for the most up to date information in relation to future activities being organised in the centre, please follow their Facebook page Tureencahill Community Group.

LEADER Spotlight: TUREENCAHILL COMMUNITY CENTRE

The refurbished former school house in Tureencahill is an example of an innovative and important community project which has been supported with LEADER Funding in the East Kerry area.

Since 2014, the hard work and dedication of the volunteers involved with the centre, has ensured that the building has been developed as a community focal point, soon after it ceased functioning as a school, marking the end of an era for the locality.

Formerly, the building was a fixture in the heart of the community due to special status as a primary

What are you putting off doing?

Do you know what procrastination is? Do you experience it? Are you putting off finding out?

Well, you’ve just answered the first question- procrastination is when we put off doing something for no valid reason. Not to be confused with laziness or avoidance, procrastination happens when we not only don’t do things but when we feel guilty for not doing them and think negatively about ourselves if we are constantly reminded of what we need to do or what we should have done.

Procrastination can affect any area of our lives - work, socialising, household tasks, studying, even our physical health when we might put off addressing something like high cholesterol or getting fit.

Basically, procrastination happens when we put off achieving a goal that we may have already identified.

So, why do we do it, or not do it in this case? Well, mainly due to our thinking styles. We may experience some unhelpful thoughts like thinking that need to be in charge at all times, having a fear of failure or being unable to tolerate any uncertainty. This could mean that we don’t start any tasks unless we are very sure of the outcome. We may experience a lot of pleasure seeking thoughts and feel that mundane tasks are too ‘boring’ to even start. Another reason might be that we lack the energy, motivation or confidence to start doing the tasks that we know we need to do.

So, what can you do to lessen or prevent procrastinate? Well, start by looking at the tasks that need to be done.

List those jobs in order of preference, putting the job you least like first, do that job first and everything after that will seem easier. Another way of starting could be that you decide on a reasonable amount of time to spend on the job, for example 20 minutes. After 20 minutes you might find that you choose to continue as you can see your progress proving that motivation to do a task often occurs after you start.

Most importantly, don’t forget to reward yourself for your progress.

You will find it easier to start the next time if you know that there is something nice waiting for you when you finish.

Remember the wise words of Abraham Lincoln - “You cannot escape the responsibilities of tomorrow by evading it today”.

So go on, do it, you won’t regret it!

A look back in time

Through the years In this section, we take a photographic look back at IRD Duhallow and its involvement and relationship with the region through the years.

This issue - 2010

Mary MacKillop founded the Australian order The Sisters of Saint Joseph. In 1926 the Sisters of St. Joseph purchased the Newmarket Court (as it was known then) and renamed it as St. Joseph’s Convent. It continued to operate as a convent until its closure in 1973.

The contribution of the Sisters of St. Joseph to the social, religious and economic life of the area was enormous and they are still remembered by the people of Newmarket and its community. Jupiter Ascending

By TREVOR O’DONOGHUE Jupiter, a gas giant consisting primarily of hydrogen and helium gases is the largest planet in our solar system with a diameter of almost 140,000 km. These nights, Jupiter can be found in the southeastern sky after nightfall. There is no mistaking it, as only the moon or Venus shines brighter in the night sky. It glows with a silvery brilliance that is unmistakable.

Jupiter is orbited by many moons, almost eighty at the last count, most of which are relatively small, but four are large and easily spotted in binoculars. These four moons are known as the Galilean Moons after Galileo’s discovery of them in 1610. If you don’t own binoculars it is definitely worthwhile tracking a pair down and turning them on Jupiter.

In binoculars, the four moons are strung out on either side of the planet and appear as tiny dots of light.

Before these moons were discovered it was believed that the Earth was at the centre of the Universe and that every other star and planet orbited it. INTERVIEW: FROM TEACHER TO FILMMAKER, SEAN O’D

By Tadhg Curtin Tadhg Curtin talks to local writer Sean O’Deadaigh about his career renaissance as well as his stage play The Cause (in which Tadhg is performing), which is set to debut in the Glen Theatre. Set in War of Independence, in the wake of the burning of Cork, it was all set to go on last winter, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of that fateful event.

Then the world stopped. Sean has not as he explains.

Writer/Director Sean O’Deadaigh I’m a retired primary school teacher. I spent most of my teaching career following, in a way, the great tradition of the “hedge school master”. I ended up working in special needs education in Cloghroe N.S. Working with enlightened principal Padraig O’Conaill and inspirational colleague Mary Olden. I probably stayed in teaching longer than I intended. It was however an enjoyable and very rewarding career.

I did however take every opportunity that presented itself to learn and gain experience in that world. It seems like that I had always been writing, but never really getting anywhere. Most of my early efforts ending up in the fire, a decision I now regret. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, I hit a purple patch. At this juncture I must give credit to my partner, now my wife, the artist Anne Browne.

Her support and belief in my writing has always been unfaltering and encouraging despite repeated rejections and disappointments.

About the time I was shortlisted for the RTE P.J. O’Connor Radio Drama Award we had set up our own production company, DRIVEON to produce my writing. Our first effort The Greek Accusative has enjoyed terrific success culminating in winning the best first time film maker award at the So-Cal Film Awards in Los Angeles. This film also opened the door to the Sundance Film Institute in Utah, USA. I was asked

to submit samples of my writing and was subsequently offered a place on their programme for first time feature film writer / directors.

I was the only non-film school graduate and it was a steep learning curve, to say the least.

Out of this experience came my feature screenplay, Cause To Kill.

Incidentally I would be known locally as John Deady, but all my creative work is under my Irish name Sean O’Deadaigh.

It seems like I’ve been waiting my whole life to make this film.

Its genesis goes back to my childhood, listening to stories of the war of independence in the family pub in Banteer. I have always had a love of Irish history and our own language. That and a deep admiration for the men and women who fought an empire for our freedom to be an independent sovereign nation. So my story is a mixture of local history, academic research including the military archives here and in Kew London, plus a large dollop of imagination to bring it all together within the established structure of screenplay writing.

It is a passion project if ever there was one. A sweeping epic of our struggle to take our place amongst the nations of the world.

I’ve worked Cause to Kill to be the first part of a trilogy. Part one finishes with the final shot of the civil war. The screenplay is presently with New York producer Roger Mancusi. To date we have received no interest or financial support in our own country.

The stage play The Cause (all going well) gets it’s opening night in the Glen Theatre on Friday 10th September (third time lucky) is essentially act two of the screenplay. Adapted and extended for the stage, of course.

The play revolves around the days following the burning of Cork City on 11th December 1920. If anything the stage play is more intense and compressed. I think the Director, Tadhg O’Keeffe has done a marvelous job in capturing that essence both in performance and set design. I can’t wait for opening night with a live audience. Great credit is also due to the talented cast and all involved in staying with the production despite everything Covid has thrown at us. The war of independence proved that we are a resilient people and níl neart ach cur le chéile.

As for the future, if Covid has taught me anything, is that it’s unpredictable. I am a member of a Los Angeles based collective of independent

filmmakers called The Backlot.

Through them I have another screenplay “The Walkback”, doing the rounds. My next project is another short film I’ve written called “Indelible”, a drug addiction story. This will be filmed in my new home town of Wexford with a local cast and crew. All that being said I have a huge debt of gratitude to the Glen Theatre and Tadhg O’Keeffe in particular for his belief in my writing. I hope to write more for the Glen.

Duhallow News CHANGES TO THE GOOD AGRICULTURE PRACTISES REGULATIONS ON THE WAY

By Michael Morrissey Increased water pollution and sources of pollutants, and the sustainability of potable water sources has become a priority across Ireland. The majority of drinking water in Ireland originates from surface waters (see Fig 1), with the remainder coming from ground water and springs.

Pollutants from farm effluents, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and the bacterial contamination of soil and water is a recognised concern in water bodies. On August 9th the ministers for Housing, local Government and Heritage, and, Agriculture, food and the Marine, announced the opening of public consultation in relation to Ireland’s Draft Nitrates Action Programme (NAP). The NAP is the primary piece of legislation that requires all farmers to implement the requirements of the Nitrates Directive in respect to maximum fertiliser use, slurry storage requirements and the closed periods for the application of organic and inorganic manures.

These regulations commonly referred to as the Good Agricultural Practises for the Protection of Water expire at the end of 2021.

Some of the proposed changes to this legislation are briefly outlined in this article.

stage Consultation document the process has commenced within the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) to develop legislation to create a register of chemical fertiliser purchases in co-ops and suppliers nationwide. It is envisaged that responsibility will effectively fall on the merchants and suppliers to register sales of chemical fertilisers to the purchaser’s herd number. It is further proposed that DAFM will receive periodic reports on fertiliser purchases from point of sale outlets. With regards to organic manure management in yards, Nitrates inspection statistics have identified inadequate slurry storage as one of the primary non-compliances at the farm inspection stage. One proposed change to the Good Agricultural Practises regulations currently being discussed is the reduction to 100 kg/ha organic Nitrogen limit stocking rate for farmers to avail of reduced storage via out wintering.

With respect to chemical fertiliser application it is currently being discussed in the consultation phase to increase the closed period for the application of chemical fertilisers to land in Zone A which includes Cork to the 31st of January and Zone B which includes Kerry to February 3rd. New proposals on slurry application include the spreading or application of all slurry by September 30th from January 1st 2022, and September 15th 2023.

In addition, all newly constructed open external tanks must be roofed or covered as soon as possible, or, no later than

the 31st of December 2027. It is also proposed that the application of soiled water will be prohibited between November 15th and January 15th. Coupled with this change will be the prohibition of storing soiled water with slurry. With regards the use of Low Emission Slurry spreading equipment (see fig 2.)it is being suggested that the compulsory use of LESS will be introduced for all famers with a stocking rate exceeding 100 kg organic N/Ha. It is further suggested that all land holdings with arable lands must apply all organic manures by LESS or incorporate within 12 hours of application.

Under the previous NAP review it was proposed that the organic N calculation or livestock excretion rate for a dairy cow would increase from 85 kg/ha organic N to 89 kg/ha organic N. This increased calculation was subsequently implemented through the GAP regulations from January 1st this year. Further changes in this calculation are proposed and expected linking the livestock excretion rate against annual milk yield. It is proposed to introduce these changes in a phased manner into the GAP regulations from January 1st 2022.

For example, the range in yield from dairy cows will fall into bands ranging from 89 kg organic N/ Ha to 106 kg N/Ha, the higher the yield the greater the excretion rate calculation.

Keeping Your Young Pet Calm

By Jane Pigott Over the past few months, I’ve noticed that the young pets attending our hospital are more skittish and stressed than ever before, owing largely to a lack of normal socialisation experiences during the key development period for the puppy over the first several months of life due to the restrictions associated with the Pandemic. These ‘lockdown puppies’ still have a lot to learn about the world before they feel safe and secure in normal situations, never mind visiting the vet. The sooner these fearful puppies have regular positive experiences at the veterinary clinic, the better, but the foundations for that positive

experience start long before the patient arrives at the clinic. A little planning goes a long way! Here are a few tips to set you and your pet up for success: 1.

Bring your pet to the vet hungry so that your pet is more likely to accept treats in clinic. This makes it easier for the vet team to make friends with your pet, use positive treat reinforcement when

they are behaving well, and be able to effectively distract your pet from the less fun parts of attending the vet, such as injections. This creates a positive experience for your pet, so that they start to associate visits to the vet with treats and cuddles rather than being scared.

Try to be as calm as you can be yourself. Remember that you are the human that your pet looks to for guidance. If you appear stressed out before leaving to visit the vet, then guess what?

Your pet will take the guidance from your body language and manner that they need to be stressed out too, because their human must know that something bad is about to happen. Remain as calm as you can and your pet will remain at ease.

On the Digital Certificate Portal you can: • Change the details on the certificate you received including names, surnames and date of birth.

• Get a copy of the certificate you received re-sent to you by email - If you previously received a certificate but want

• Check the status of your certificate - If you have been vaccinated but haven’t got your certificate yet – just fill out a quick form and they can check the current stage of your cert.

• Request a certificate of recovery - If you have had a positive COVID-19 test (RTPCR or ‘NAAT’) more than 11 days ago then you can request a certificate of recovery. Your certificate will remain valid for 180 days after the day you tested positive.

Summer Madness FILM REVIEW

Nearly 50 years old, the ferocious, raw power of Tobe Hooper’s horror movie masterpiece, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) remains undiminished to this day.

Chainsaw is one of my top five favourite movies of all time. I’m not exaggerating. Having purchased the DVD in Lee Records (RIP) in Killarney in 2005 because of the greatest DVD cover I had ever seen, I watched it that night and my mind was completely blown.

It follows Sally Kirkland who along with her brother Franklin, her boyfriend and another couple, make a journey to Texas to visit the grave of the Kirkland sibling’s grandfather to see if it’s undisturbed. Grave robberies have occurred and due to a gas shortage they stop by a house to try and procure spare gasoline only for things to take a drastic turn.

Hooper wrote the script along with Kim Henkel; it was loosely inspired by the notorious true crime cases of Ed Gein and Elmore Wayne Henley. The supernatural is one thing, real life is another. Life is always way more screwed up than fiction.

But it’s funny. It’s pitch black humour gets lost in the first

couple of viewings. It’s almost a parody of a family trying to keep it together. Hooper talked about it as a comment on what was happening in America at the time - there was a gas shortage, the Vietnam war was still going on, think about it - people entering an area they know nothing about greeted with hostility? It’s in there.

Made on a shoestring budget, it works in its favour. Once described as “artfully artless” it looks like a snuff film but Daniel Pearl’s innovative cinematography is absolutely amazing. The soundscape is truly unnerving.

Marilyn Burns as Sally is my definitive scream queen for sheer quality, quantity and variety alone.

It’s laughable now but Hooper wanted to have it’s audience rating a PG13. He designed it in a way that less is more so it’s actually not as bloody as you remember. He underestimated his ability to scare.

I had never seen anything like it.

After seeing it, I ran back along our passage at home. My palms were sweaty from the viewing experience but I knew then and there I wouldn’t view cinema or life the same way ever again. It was a jolt to the system.

Unwittingly, I couldn’t have timed it better. Watching it in the summer was almost like a 4D experience. The heat and smells of the countryside added to the experience but make no mistake, viewing it in a snowstorm, you will still feel the heat from this Texan nightmare.

Nauseating, traumatising and absolutely exhilarating, it’s still as fresh as when first released. “Who will survive and what will be left of them’’ was the original tagline.

For those who dare to check it out, you’ll see. Electrifying!

Tips on preparing for an Interview

By Jackie Kelly Our advice this week from the job centre is to do your homework prior to an interview. Do the research and make sure that you have thoroughly read the job description for the job you are applying for.

The time you spend preparing for your interview by researching a company can boost your chance of getting the job. This is why it’s important to set aside time to learn more about companies prior to interviewing with them. Don’t wait until the day before your interview to get started. Find about the organisation, its function, its remit and about the part of the

organisation that your role would fit in to.

To research the company and the role; look at the company website, speak to current and past employees, search Google News for the Company name, check out Social Media accounts, do some Competitor research, you could research employees i.e. on LinkedIn and research the hiring manager.

Interviewers, and particularly hiring managers are not impressed if the candidate has not done their research. It is taken as a sign of a lack of genuine interest in the role and research is something relatively easy to do.
