RATHMORE ROAD WORKS

Road stone Ltd has been employed by Kerry County Council to complete the Rathmore Phase 2 Safety Improvement Scheme These works started on the 3rd of August and are set to continue for the week at 8am and may extend to 8pm. On road parking will be prohibited in the area where works are taking place. Residents will be informed prior to works commencing in these areas.

Drivers and pedestrians are requested to exercise caution due to this temporary hazards of raised services, joints and ramps etc. Please remove all seating, tables, etc. from roadway in areas where works are taking place.

Please follow the directions of site personnel if you require assistance.

Walking On Sunshine Newmarket man Con Collins has collected fantastic €16,000 for Kanturk Community Hospital. Con - better known as Corney walked 60km in 6 days to raise money as a way to give back to the hospital. Peggy, his wife of 56 years, has been a resident there for the last 3 and a half years.

“She has been treated with great respect and dignity by the lovely staff,” said his daughter Anna on his GoFundMe Page.

Community News

TONY MOYNIHAN R.I.P. We extend deepest sympathy to the Moynihan family, Marie, Tadhg, and Donal, all his relatives and friends, and Rathmore C.L.G. on the very sad loss of Tony Moynihan, Raheen, Rathmore.

Tony served the club, parish, community, and East Kerry GAA for decades, and continued to do so along with running his own farm and looking after his family.

He served many roles for his club; a star player, a long standing development officer, an All Ireland quiz winner, and most recently, an ace Strictly Come Dancing participant. Tony first came to prominence as a brilliant underage player in the early 1970’s and received a county medal. He went onto win his first O’Donoghue Cup medal and then a second in 1984

in a match where he also annexed the Man of the Match award.

Tony was Development Officer in Rathmore GAA for many years.

He oversaw the 3 pitches and was the man that most teams meet first when they come to Rathbeg.

Tony went above and beyond to look after the East Kerry U21 and minor teams.

After hanging up his boots, Tony became interested in quizzes.

During his time with the Rathmore Quiz team, he won 6 All Ireland titles in Question Time.

In November 2017, he took to the stage with Mary Kelleher at the INEC in a club fundraiser, Strictly Hollywood, and demonstrated a nimbleness of foot reminiscent of his playing days.

In his family life, Tony had to

overcome the tragic loss of his wife Sheila when the children were very young.

His 3 children - Marie, Tadhg, and Donal - are now following in his footsteps playing an active role as players and officers in Rathmore GAA and LGFA clubs.

Tony is one of life’s true gentlemen and a most worthy recipient of the 2018 East Kerry GAA Person of the Year. He will be sadly missed by so many.

LEADER in the community

#SICAPstories: That’s what friends are for

Sarah Weathers from Banteer and her friends, Karen O Donoghue, Aisling Healy, and Rachel O Shaughnessy approached IRD Duhallow seeking the opportunity to learn Irish Sign Language to allow them communicate with each other.

Sarah was diagnosed with a rare disorder back in 2017 which causes benign tumours to grow on the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). In 2017, she had brain surgery to partially remove one of her brain tumours, and in 2019, she had a shunt inserted to drain fluid from the brain. She then spent a very scary 3 week stay in Beaumont hospital fighting for her life.

She is currently wearing hearing aids and has lost her hearing twice in the last two years, which was a frightening time. Her hearing

came back but she is not guaranteed it will stay.

The girls decided to learn sign language to be able to communicate with their best friend.

IRD Duhallow supported the girls through the SICAP programme where they did a Basic online Irish Sign Language course, and then continued on to do a QQI Level 3 online sign language course with the Irish Deaf Society. Rachel O’Shaughnessy is now furthering her skills. She is starting a QQI Level 4 Irish Sign Language course through SICAP in September. Rachel stated “These courses has also allowed me to communicate with customers who come into Supervalu where I work part time. Two deaf ladies came in recently and I was able to practice what I learned”.

LEADER Spotlight: The Glouneen River Loop

The Glouneen is one of the oldest landmarks in Kiskeam Village.

This River Loop Walk is a unique and beautiful amenity in the heart of Kiskeam, which is extremely popular with walkers due to its panoramic views of the Araglen River and its central location in the village. The Walk has safe footpaths and public lighting, which makes it safe and usable all year around.

The development of the Glouneen River Walk was spearheaded by Araglen Development Association amenity under LEADER & CLAR and has added to the village’s amenities. The riverbank has been developed as a good fishing location and a relaxing picnic setting for young and old.

This walk promotes biodiversity as there is an abundance of nature to be seen on the route. In recent weeks a new family of ducks have been spotted along with otters,

who have taken up residence under the bridge. Information boards inform the visitors about the natural habitat and history of the locality.

The original walk is now used daily as it was in times gone by. It is an excellent shortcut from the Doon road to the Village. The old stepping stones were replaced

with a bridge for a dry crossing and this project will ensure that this recreational area can continue to be used by both locals and visitors.

The project has strengthened the local living area for its inhabitants, improved the tourist offerings for visitors and furthermore preserved the rural and historic characteristics of the village.

GUIDING TO THE FUTURE Boherbue Girl Guides and Senior Branch participated in the Irish Girl Guides International camp - Octagon 2021, over the bank holiday weekend. They are very grateful to Boherbue Educare for allowing them to set up our base in their field from which the girls were able to log on and complete their virtual challenges. All challenges were based around STEM and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), with the theme of “speak up, speak out.”

The girls explored wind power using Lego Models to build a land yacht. They wrote action cards to the Taoiseach and the Tanaiste sending them strong messages on how they want them to legislate for their future. The girls played an SDG board game which we

Often times we reach the ‘paradox of perfection’, where our striving for perfection gets in the way of our performance and prevents us from enjoying our life. This can affect many areas of our life; work,

Gardening Tips by Rachel Budd - Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow

GROWING TOMATOES The scorching temperatures we have just experienced should have really helped to bring on tomatoes struggling with poor growth this season.

It has been a very strange season for all fruit and vegetables, with crop growth incredibly slow for no real discernible reason. Yes, we had a cold spring, but that alone doesn’t account for the continued poor growth that is being highlighted not only in Duhallow or Ireland as a whole, but across the continent as well.

We have had very wet periods followed by unusually dry, low temperatures and light levels, and now extreme heat. Is it any wonder our plants are struggling?

But tomatoes shouldn’t be affected by any of this; they are grown under the protection of glass or plastic, raised in a propagator, and basically sheltered from the harsh outside world. So why are they still

For all that though, the recent hot weather has really brought them on, and here at IRD Duhallow, we have our first fruits ripening.

In order to guarantee a supply of sweet ripe fruits in the Irish climate, even under cover, it is always best to choose early ripening varieties, and there are plenty to choose from. Tomatoes come in all shapes and sizes and colours, and make a beautiful addition to salads and sauces throughout the season.

As the fruit trusses are forming, keep removing side shoots, and start removing the lower leaves so that maximum light can get to the

fruit to ripen it. You might end up with a very bare looking plant, but with trusses of juicy ripe tomatoes all the way up the stem, so don’t be afraid to give it a trim.

Feed the plant every week with a potassium based tomato feed.

This will promote fruiting and can be very easily made from comfrey plants growing in your garden.

Pick the fruit as it ripens, to encourage more to follow suit, and remember; not all tomatoes are red.

They come in all colours from green and stripy, to yellow, orange, red, purple, brown, and even black, so give them the squeeze test. When your tomato feels soft and squidgy to touch, it is ripe, and there is nothing better than a sweet juicy warm tomato straight from the tunnel.

Hopefully you will have so many tomatoes that you can’t eat them all, and after sharing them with friends and family, you might want to preserve some. Tomatoes need processing in some way to store them, so get creative with oven dried tomatoes in olive oil, make pasta sauces, soups, and ketchups. But most of all, enjoy the little burst of sunshine that is a tomato.

IRD Duhallow had its annual board meeting and AGM on 28th July, 2021. Here we see a snapshot of some AGMs over the years. An important date in the year, it offers the locals in Duhallow a chance to have their voice be heard and interact with those striving to improve the area. Of course last year put a halt to the public attending the meeting but in compliance with the Covid restrictions at the time, IRD Duhallow pressed on. Properly distanced as you can see but together more then ever in helping the Duhallow region.

CATCH A FALLING STAR

By TREVOR O’DONOGHUE Every day, as the Earth moves through space, it is bombarded by millions of pieces of sand, dust and tiny fragments of rocks. When these pieces of debris hit Earth’s atmosphere, they are traveling at speeds in excess of 50 km/second, they burn up and can be seen as spectacular streaks across the night sky. These are shooting stars or meteors and are visible every night if the sky is clear. However, there are certain times of the year when the Earth passes through clouds of dust and debris and this creates many more shooting stars.

This is known as a meteor shower.

For a couple of days either side of the 12th August, the Earth passes through a cloud of debris left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle and we are treated to celestial fireworks in the form of the Perseid meteor shower. The shower peaks on the night of the 12th/morning of 13th of August with up to 150 shooting stars visible every hour.

A fireball as it’s entering the Earth’s atmosphere In reality, this means after midnight as the 12th moves into the 13th and until the sky gets bright is the best opportunity to see them. Fortunately this year, the crescent moon sets at around 11 pm so the sky will be nice and dark.

If you have a clear sky, wrap up warm, bring warm drinks and head

out for a night under the stars.

Relax on a deck chair or similar, ideally away from bright lights and let the night sky entertain you.

Have patience, it can take a while for your eyes to get dark adapted.

Also the meteors can come in clusters, so you might see nothing for a while then a few all together.

Give yourself at least an hour, it will be well worth it.

The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, but all appear to radiate from a point in the sky in the constellation Perseus and so they are known as the Perseids.

Perseus is pretty much located in the North East before and after midnight. Don’t worry if we are clouded out, as you can see meteors most clear nights if you have patience. The shooting stars can vary in brightness from really faint to really bright. Keep an eye out for trails of smoke from the brighter ones. Hopefully we get some clear skies and get to enjoy the Perseids in all their glory.

MINISTER FOR EDUCATION L “In education and indeed in society, we have long since prioritised the needs of young people. However, not before time, it is now imperative that we also seek to equally prioritise the voice and the views of young people. This Youth Needs Analysis which we launch today does exactly that.”

These were the words of Minister for Education Norma Foley at the official launch of the IRD Duhallow Youth Needs Analysis Study on the 29th of July.

Funded by the LEADER programme and backed by the North Cork, South Cork and Kerry Local Action Groups (LAGs), this research report represents one of the most extensive and in-depth sets of studies undertaken among young people in rural Ireland.

Authored by Dr Brendan O’Keeffe, the report presents up-to-date primary research from three complementary surveys. One deals specifically with experiences and perceptions among schoolaged teenagers. Another captures the views of young adults (aged 18 to 35), while the third focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on rural young people aged 16-35.

The report’s preface is written by renowned academic, Dr Rory O’Donnell. This highlights the importance of research such as this in giving voice to young people and providing a platform through which they can express their views, concerns, and hopes.

The report’s findings made for positive reading. While Duhallow has long been affected by youth out-migration, a clear majority of today’s youth say they would like to settle down and raise a family locally. However, in order for this to happen there needs to be significant investment in the region, and young people point

to the need for better community amenities and improved public transport. The report recommends investment in flagship projects to further improve the quality of life for people in the area. The area profile, which is incorporated into the report, reveals some infrastructural deficits locally, and data provided by statutory bodies and service providers reveal some gaps and shortcomings in respect of social supports and vocational pathways. Many of the area’s young adults report difficulties with attaining mortgages, planning permission, and affordable childcare.

Young people in the region demonstrate a thirst for knowledge, and they have positive attitudes towards continuing and furthering their education. However, just six percent of males, and no females, indicated that they would like a career in farming. These findings point to the importance of creating other types of jobs within the region, which has traditionally had a strong agricultural focused.

Furthermore, this highlights

the importance of succession planning for farm families and making farming a more attractive occupation for our young people.

In terms of well-being, the vast majority of young people report healthy behaviours in respect of eating, taking exercise and refraining from smoking. However, under-age alcohol consumption and unhealthy attitudes towards alcohol are problematic. The survey results also reveal notable mental health challenges, including feelings of fatigue, loneliness, and isolation, as well as issues with bullying and social media. The pandemic has exacerbated all of these challenges.

In relation to COVID-19, the survey findings also point to significant adverse mental health consequences and shortcomings in the supports available to young people. Among those in employment, a quarter have suffered a drop in income, and almost a third have had to give-up work or reduce their hours, due to the pandemic.

LAUNCHES YOUTH REPORT Minister Presents Major Award Certs

Minister Norma Foley in the Marquee The pandemic has significantly altered people’s social lives, and the survey findings reveal that most are spending more time, online, using social media, and walking in their neighbourhoods.

Anne Maria Bourke welcomed the recent allocation of funding for a Community Mental Health Worker who will focus on supporting those with mental ill health in the community.

The research refers to the countless initiatives IRD Duhallow has undertaken over the past thirty years to improve economic vibrancy and quality of life for young people in the region. The report states that it is imperative to build on these approaches, and that there needs to be increased investment from government in supports and services for rural areas such as Duhallow and the Lee Valley.

IRD Duhallow Chairperson Breeda Moynihan Cronin welcomed the findings of the report, adding that “this insightful research will act as a guiding document for our Board, as well as our Youth and Education Working Group to prioritise funding and seek out initiatives in order to achieve the recommendations set out in the document.”

This course was funded and run through our Skillnet programme and was delivered in the James O’Keeffe Institute across eight months.

Each trainee also completed 150 hours work experience in local Duhallow nursing homes and hospitals.

A huge part of the work we do here is creating opportunities for Adult and Second Chance Education and we focus on delivering affordable, quality training here locally. This means that people can access these training programmes, juggling home and family lives with their education timetable.

Playing It Safe Online

The internet and social media is full of the best and worst stories about gaming. It quite literally puts the world at your fingertips and that can lead to uncertainty about if you feel comfortable letting your child play video games. Just like surfing the internet, video games can be an absolutely incredible experience, and there are a lot of simple things you can do to make it a fun and safe experience for them.

To a lot of children video games are a real passion, much like sports are to others. Taking interest in their hobby really does encourage communication about problems they may have.

Manage the money In the modern gaming landscape, sometimes buying the game isn’t the end of the spending. Many games now sell in-game items for real cash. These are referred to as “microtransactions”.

Fortnite, for example, is free to play, but it charges to buy different characters or skins.

The constantly changing store creates the illusion of scarcity, and some deem not having brought anything as an excuse to harass people. Kids can feel pressured to spend money in the store to feel included, and the costs can add up very quickly.

Prepaid cards (such as Swirl cards) and gift cards are available in most game related stores and supermarkets that can be used in place of a bank card. Not only does this stop the risk of an accidental purchase, but also helps cap the amount they can spend.

Mobile games Mobile games seem more harmless given the reduced social aspect, but they are often the most insidious when it comes to hidden costs. Many of these costs are tied to your in-phone wallet. Be aware of what games they’re playing and educate yourself on which ones cause the most trouble.

Parental controls Every gaming system comes with a selection of parental controls.

These can range from restricting the age of games they can play, if they can play online, and even setting how long they can play for.

These can be great for peace of mind. Have a conversation about these and explain why you’ve chosen the limits you have.

Gaming has the amazing ability to bring people together, be it sat together in the same room racing on Mario Kart, or playing online with friends from around the world.

If played sensibly and kept safe, it can be a wonderful hobby to have to unwind after school and homework. Don’t let the few bad apples ruin this experience just because to some, it’s not just a game.

3. Mute, Report, and Block. The three steps if you do encounter an abusive or unsettling individual. Stay calm and don’t reply. Not only would this encourage any bullies, but also can result in your child getting into trouble as well.

A DAY AT THE RACES FILM REVIEW

One man’s meticulous planning of a robbery only goes to show that life laughs at you when you make plans in The Killing (1956) As the Galway races have wrapped up its week of meetings, I thought I’d write about The Killing, Stanley Kubrick’s heist movie starring Sterling Hayden as Johnny Clay, a man who plans what he thinks is the perfect robbery of a race track during a race meeting only for things to gradually go awry.

Based on a script by the legendary crime author, Jim Thompson, The Killing is one of the greatest of heist movies, a benchmark for crime movies to follow and to be measured against.

A work where the formula is laid

out in its simplest form.

Kubrick would go on to produce works far more vast in their thematic grandeur, but here he is at his most lean and to the point. His meticulous eye for composition is helped by the great cinematographer, Lucien Ballard, and the actors are all on top form; Hayden, Marie Windsor, Elisha Cook Jr., and that great crazy man of cinema, Timothy Carey.

As I mentioned before, the crux of The Killing essentially showcases that life really does not care about your plans; things go wrong and it’s how you cope with that possibility that sums up the character of a person.

Kubrick would explore this existential crisis in far more elaborate detail in later works, characters dwarfed by a vast and hostile environment, rarely in control of what happens to them but here, it’s in its most stripped down form.

Many movies since then have tried to recreate it, Quentin Tarantino once said that “Reservoir Dogs was my The Killing”, but The Killing still sets the benchmark in cinema for planning to steal.

Duhallow Social Farming Project is seeking Host Farms IRD Duhallow is in the process of establishing a voluntary Social Farming project that provides a structured programme of farming-related activities and social inclusion opportunities for people across the spectrum of disability and mental ill health within their local communities.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from farm families who wish to act as host farms for the project. In so far as is possible, IRD Duhallow’s Social Farming Facilitator will aim to ensure that there is a good match between the participants interests, needs and capacity, and the farm and the farming family. Host Farms will be supported with maintenance and on farm improvements or alterations/safety measures where applicable as well as supported to access relevant training opportunities.

The project will draw upon extensive research that clearly links contact with the natural environment with improved physical and mental health outcomes for participants of social farming. The European Commission has increasingly promoted nature-based solutions as a concept to describe measures that can contribute to quality of life.
