IRD Duhallow proudly hosted its annual Recognition of Learning Ceremony at the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket on Friday, 31st of July, celebrating the educational achievements and personal milestones of learners from across the region.

The event brought together more than 60 graduates, along with their families, educators, training providers, and community partners. The occasion recognised not only formal qualifications, but also the

commitment, determination, and resilience shown by learners throughout their educational journeys.

Monica Gilmore served as Master of Ceremonies for the celebration, guiding attendees through an uplifting programme that reflected the strong community spirit at the heart of IRD Duhallow’s education and training work.

Ted’s Opel Vauxhall Run 2026 Draws Over 70 Cars and Raises Vital Funds for Dogs for the Disabled

After a fantastic turnout of over seventy cars on Saturday last the 8th of August at Ted’s Opel Vauxhall Run 2026, Held in Macroom in aid of the Dogs for the Disabled. They would like to thank each and everyone who attended and made the 19th run the success that it was. There were people from most of the 32 counties present and also from the Isle of Man. Of course the addition of the glorious weather helped aswell. They would like to thank their Sponsors, Opel Ireland, Cartell.ie, Casey Caravan Services, and many other contributors for continuing to help us raise such needed funds for the charity. A special thank you to the Gardaí and all our marshals. A huge word of thanks to Coolcower House and all it’s staff for all the help, hospitality and service.

To all the Media, thank you all sincerely for all of the photographs, videos and correspondence. They are still winding down from Saturday but are beginning to put things in place for the 20th run next year to be held on the 14th of August and based at the Mills Inn, Ballyvourney, so put that weekend in your diary.

Celebrating Duhallow’s Business Community: The 2026 IRD Duhallow Business Awards

Duhallow is home to a vibrant and diverse business community, with entrepreneurs, family businesses, and established companies making an important contribution to our towns, villages and rural communities.

Now, it is time to celebrate them!

IRD Duhallow is delighted to announce that nominations are now open for the 2026 IRD Duhallow Business Awards, which will take place on Friday, 30th October 2026 at the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket.

Now in their 12th year, the awards have become an important annual celebration of enterprise across the Duhallow region. They aim to promote positive business and recognise the finest small and medium enterprises in the area.

We need your help to find them!

Businesses can nominate themselves, but nominations are also open to anyone who would like to recognise a local business that deserves to be celebrated. Perhaps it is the café that always goes the extra mile, a new business that has made an impressive start, a family business that has been part of the community for generations, or a company that is creating employment and investing in the future of Duhallow.

There are six award categories this year, ensuring that businesses across a wide range of sectors and at different stages of development can be recognised.

These include: Best Emerging Business, Best Small Established Business, Best Large Established Business, Best in the Creative Industry, Best Food Business, and Best in the Hair and Beauty Industry.

The awards are about much more than simply winning a prize.

They provide an opportunity to showcase the talent, ambition, innovation and dedication that exists within the IRD Duhallow business community and to give businesses the recognition they deserve.

The awards evening itself promises to be a fantastic celebration. Taking place on the 30th of October in the marquee at the James O’Keeffe Institute, the evening will include a four-course dinner, wine and entertainment, with popular comedian and broadcaster Alan Shortt as MC. Whether you are a business owner, employee, customer, friend or member of the local community, we would encourage you to think about the businesses that make

Discover New Pathways to Wellbeing This Autumn with IRD Duhallow

We may not like to think about the summer ending just yet, but September is on the horizon, and with it will come the return of the IRD Duhallow Wellbeing & Recovery College.

This semester will mark the first anniversary of the launch of this innovative service which has gone from strength to strength since we hosted our first module in September 2025.

The Autumn/Winter 2026 semester will be our biggest yet, with a great variety of topics being covered each Thursday. Every module is Co-Created, meaning that a mix of professionals, family members and people with lived experience of mental health issues have come together to create the module. This model ensures that the module reflects the real experiences of our community members.

This year we have a selection of modules Co-Created by our own students here in Duhallow, and we are very grateful to the Mayo Recovery College who have once again provided us with some modules, which allows us to offer an even wider selection of topics for our students.

So let’s take a look at what is coming up in Autumn/Winter 2026: Exploring Anger: Sept 17th, 24th & Oct 1st “Anyone can become angry—that is easy. But to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way—that is not easy.” – Aristotle The aim of this 3 part module is to explore our relationship with anger and acknowledge its effects on our mental health. Anger is not necessarily a bad or negative thing, it is an emotion just like any

other, however, our own anger, or the anger of others, can have a negative impact if we don’t have the skills to deal with it.

Body & Mind in Unity: Oct 8th & 15th Co-Created by our own students in Duhallow and staff from Mental Health Ireland in Clare, Limerick and Sligo, this module seeks to bring awareness to the connections between our physical health and mental health, and how each can influence the other.

After developing awareness of the connections, we will explore how we move from awareness to practices and actions that will have a tangible benefit for our overall wellbeing and health.

Exploring Communication: Oct 22nd & Nov 5th Communication is only effective when the receiver receives a message, exactly as the sender intended. Sounds simple, but in reality it often is not. When mental health is involved, communication can become even more complex.

Co-Created by the Mayo Recovery College a number of years ago, in this module we will look at how we communicate in our relationships and with the people around us, we’ll identify barriers to communication and consider the benefits of effective communication on our mental health.

Anxiety- Stepping Stones: Nov 12th & 19th We all feel anxiety at times, it is a natural part of being human.

However, we can fall into a spiral where our anxiety grows and gets in the way of us living our life to the full.

How does this happen, and crucially, what are our “stepping stones” out of it? Join us as we explore this and much more.

Family Support: Nov 26th & Dec 3rd “Family Recovery is intrinsically about all members of the family being able to live a life of their own choosing regardless of the challenges of mental health issues” National Recovery Framework.

In this module we will explore the implication on a family when a loved one is living with a mental health challenge. We will discuss dynamics within families and pathways for wellness, empowerment and self-care.

Living with Depression & Beyond: Dec 10th & 17th Right through recorded history humans have experienced depression. The ancient Greeks suggested gymnastics and massage as a treatment, the Romans used baths and donkey’s milk. In the more recent past, those experiencing depression were shunned and stigmatised. A stigma that we are still working to shake off today.

In this module we will discuss the lived experience of depression as well as the medical definition of depression. We will also explore how we can live as full a life as possible, with or without the symptoms of depression.

All modules of the Wellbeing & Recovery College are free to attend and available to anyone over the age of 18 with an interest in mental health. Students are free to pick and choose modules that interest them and attend as many or as few modules as they like. Our modules run on Thursdays between 10am and 1pm at the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket.

Recognition Of Learning

IRD Duhallow celebrates learners at ann CONT’D FROM FRONT

IRD Duhallow was honoured to welcome the Mayor of the County of Cork, Councillor Bernard Moynihan, and Minister Norma Foley TD, Minister for Children, Disability and Equality. Those gathered also heard from Anne Maria Bourke, Chairperson of IRD Duhallow; Eileen Linehan, Assistant CEO of IRD Duhallow; and Ruth Baker, EU Programme Manager with Skillnet Ireland.

Skillnet Ireland was also represented by Michael Dwyer, Policy Research Advisor.

Representatives from University College Cork, Munster Technological University, SouthEast Technological University, City College Dublin, Kinisla, Carbery, EDC Engineering and PDI were also in attendance, alongside members of the IRD Duhallow Board. Their continued support was warmly acknowledged and greatly appreciated by graduates and their families.

The ceremony marked an important milestone for learners who received qualifications across QQI Levels 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The awards reflected the breadth of learning pathways available through IRD Duhallow and the diverse achievements of participants across the region.

Graduates came from a vibrant learning community. Some attended classes at the James O’Keeffe Institute, while others completed their studies online, balancing education with work, family, and other commitments.

Qualifications and learning achievements recognised on the day spanned a wide range of areas, including Work and Organisational Leadership, Childcare, Business Administration and Sustainability for Agriculture.

Learners were also recognised for achievements in Make-Up Application Skills, Beginner Computer Skills Training, Mindfulness and Mental Health programmes.

An unforgettable moment as 60 graduates marked their success with some tossing their caps into the air, surrounded by their guests, trainers and supporters.

These programmes provide valuable opportunities for personal development, career progression and lifelong learning. They also reflect IRD Duhallow’s ongoing commitment to supporting individuals at every stage of their educational journey, particularly within rural communities.

Speakers paid tribute to the graduates’ hard work and perseverance, while also acknowledging the important support provided by families, tutors, training providers and community partners throughout the learning process.

The programmes were cofunded through ESF+, Skills Connect, SICAP and the Dormant Accounts Fund. IRD Skillnet is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union These initiatives continue to play an important role in supporting upskilling, lifelong learning and social inclusion.

Outstanding In Their Own Fields

Congratulations to some of our local young farmers who were top of their class at the recent FBD Tullamore Livestock Show 2026.

Paul Murphy and Emma Behan were winners of The HolsteinFriesian Senior Cow in Milk with their cow Coolroe House Abbott Ann. They also won Registered Pedigree Holstein-Friesian Best Pair of Females.

In The Hereford section Neil Twomey won the National Hereford Junior Heifer of the Year with his heifer Ringfort Ravette 711PP. It's great to see our local young farmers making a name for themselves in the farming sector.

SDG 15: Life on Land in the Duhallow Region

By COLM O’CONNOR Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15 focuses on protecting and restoring life on land, a priority that resonates deeply within the Duhallow region of North Cork.

Characterised by a rich mosaic of farmland, rivers, peatlands and woodlands, Duhallow’s natural environment is both a vital local resource and a key contributor to Ireland’s biodiversity. Ensuring its protection and sustainable use is essential for the long-term wellbeing of both the environment and the rural communities who depend on it.

Agriculture is central to life in Duhallow, and farmers play a crucial role in supporting SDG 15. Traditional farming practices, such as maintaining hedgerows, protecting field margins, and managing grasslands sustainably, help preserve habitats for birds, pollinators and small mammals.

Increasingly, local farmers are engaging in agri-environment schemes that promote biodiversity, reduce chemical inputs, and protect soil health. These actions not only support wildlife but also enhance farm resilience and productivity over time.

Forestry is another important aspect of the Duhallow landscape.

Sustainable forest management ensures that woodlands continue to provide ecological, economic,

and social benefits. Initiatives to plant native tree species, such as oak, birch, and rowan, help strengthen biodiversity and create more resilient ecosystems. Locally, efforts to balance commercial forestry with biodiversity conservation are critical, ensuring that forestry practices contribute positively to the environment without compromising habitats.

Peatlands, particularly areas of bog in Duhallow, are also significant under SDG 15. These ecosystems act as carbon sinks, helping to combat climate change, while also supporting unique biodiversity. However, they are sensitive environments and can be damaged by drainage and overuse. Restoration projects aimed at re-wetting and conserving boglands are increasingly recognised as valuable steps in halting land degradation and preserving these habitats for future generations.

Community engagement is a strong feature of environmental action in Duhallow. IRD Duhallow, l ocal schools, and community groups actively participate in clean-up initiatives, tree planting days, and biodiversity awareness campaigns. These efforts foster a sense of stewardship and highlight the importance of protecting natural resources at a local level.

Newmarket Afterschools Celebrates 20 Years of Community Support

A wonderful sense of celebration and community spirit filled Newmarket recently as IRD Duhallow’s Newmarket Afterschools marked 20 years of supporting local children and families. The milestone was celebrated with a special visit from Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley TD, who officially marked the occasion by cutting a ceremonial ribbon alongside staff, children, parents and invited guests.

Held under glorious sunshine, the event brought together many of the people who have contributed to the service’s success over the past two

decades. Since opening its doors, Newmarket Afterschools has provided a safe, nurturing environment where children can learn, play and build friendships outside school hours.

Minister Foley was welcomed

by IRD Duhallow Chairperson Anne Maria Bourke, Assistant CEO Eileen Linehan, Board Member Mary Wallace, Community Services Team Leader Helen O’Sullivan, staff, parents and children attending the summer camp programme.

She acknowledged the important role afterschool services play in supporting children and working families and took time to engage with those attending.

A highlight of the visit was an informal question-and-

answer session, where children enthusiastically put their questions to the Minister, who responded with warmth and sincerity. Face painting and ice cream added to the festive atmosphere and ensured a memorable afternoon for everyone.

The anniversary also provided an opportunity to recognise the dedication of past and present staff whose commitment has helped shape the service over 20 years. As the ribbon was cut, the occasion celebrated not only a significant milestone but also the strong community connections that continue to make Newmarket Afterschools such a valued local resource.

The Power of Yet

Guidance Counselling In my work as a guidance counsellor, one of the things I notice regularly is how quickly young people can decide what they are capable of.

Sometimes a poor test result or a mistake can lead to a much bigger conclusion about themselves.

“I’m no good at maths.”

“I can’t do that.”

“I’m not academic.”

“School’s not for me.”

This is where one small word can make a surprisingly big difference: YET “I’m no good at maths yet” is a very different statement. It suggests that where you are today does not have to determine where you can be tomorrow.

This is at the heart of a growth mindset, the belief that our abilities can develop through learning, practice, feedback and finding better ways to approach a problem.

I believe mistakes are one of the best ways we learn. Mistakes tell us what we need to learn next.

A test is not a judgement. It is information. If you get 45%, it doesn’t simply tell you what you got wrong; it can show you where the gaps are in your learning. You can then work with your teacher to fill those gaps.

And don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Asking a question early is like taking a small step. Leave it too long, and that small step can become a huge leap.

Your teacher should be your first and best resource when you don’t understand something. Asking questions in class is the best way to learn.

bike. No one ever got on a bike for the first time, rode off perfectly and never fell off. We wobbled.

We fell. We got back up. We tried again. Eventually, something that once seemed impossible became something we could do without even thinking about it.

Learning works in much the same way.

Growth mindset isn’t about simply working harder. It’s about working differently when the first approach doesn’t work. Try a different method. Ask for help.

Learn from the feedback. Then try again.

This way of thinking is important for career guidance too. A belief

formed at 15 can influence a decision made at 18. A student who decides they are “not a Maths person” might rule out subjects, courses or careers without ever properly exploring them.

Perhaps the goal isn’t to stop making mistakes. It is to learn from the old ones and be brave enough to make new ones. A new mistake often means you’re attempting something you couldn’t do before.

Living in the Power of The Holy Spirit

By TOM DENNEHY “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father and He will send you another advocate to help you and be with you forever” John 14;1516.

The Holy Spirit, for many of us, is the forgotten person of the Holy Trinity and we need to invoke the Holy Spirit continuously. We need to live in that divine power for which Jesus has paid such a high price by His death on the cross.

God, our Father, is constantly renewing his Church in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Church is all who have been baptized.

This is the greatest day of our lives as we become children of God, brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ. We are baptized priests, prophets and king, a triple ministry in our lives. We receive all the gifts, fruits and charisms of the Holy Spirit poured into our souls. We are sealed in Christ Jesus.

These gifts are confirmed in us in Confirmation. The problem is that they remain as gifts unopened and not fully understood. They need to be stirred up just like sugar in our tea. If we want to taste the sweetness we have to stir up what we have received. This is why we need to experience an infilling of the Holy Spirit by partaking in a Life in the Spirit Seminar to see the Holy Spirit working in our lives. We need to experience the joy of the Holy Spirit and develop a deeper relationship with Jesus.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is Issue 171 August 21st, 2026

a person, a spirit we cannot see. He is our advocate, our comforter, our teacher and the one who walks beside us, always present, interceding for us. He is eternal and knows all things.

The Holy Spirit is the love of the Father for the Son, Jesus.

What does the Holy Spirit do in our lives?

• The Holy Spirit lifts the lid on human limitations and lifts us up to live in the divine realm.

• We become more interested in spiritual readings, Scripture comes to life for us and we have a new thirst for things of God and the lives of the saints.

• We come to realize our dependence on God. We can pray in a new way. Our prayer is more focused on our relationship with God and not on ourselves.

• The Holy Spirit helps us to repent as we become more aware of our sins in our deepened relationship with Jesus.

• We are no longer afraid to stand up for our faith. What other people think of us is no longer a problem for us. We are empowered to share the good news of the Gospel and shed our light wherever we go.

• We come to know God in a new way. We experience God’s love and presence. We begin to develop a personal relationship with Jesus and this is key to our growth in the Holy Spirit so that we may carry out His ministry work which we have been ordained to do.

Jesus understood the importance of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the Apostles. He warned them before He ascended into Heaven to go into the city and wait there until the Holy Spirit came upon them. They gathered in the Upper Room in Jerusalem, in prayer with Mother Mary. When the Holy Spirit came upon them in tongues of fire, they were changed forever and began to speak in tongues.

They were no longer afraid and went out and preached the good news of the Gospel.

Pentecost was the beginning of our Church and we see how the Holy Spirit was working so powerfully in the Acts of the Apostles. We are now living in the time of the Holy Spirit and this was recognized by previous popes. Pope Francis and Pope Benedict were constantly calling on all parishes to host Life in the Spirit Seminars. A Life in the Spirit Seminar presented by MIR ministries will begin in Millstreet Parish Centre on Friday, September 4th commencing at 8pm and running for six consecutive Fridays, ending on October 9th.

We can only do the work Jesus has asked us to do when we are working in the power of The Holy Spirit. When we do, we will see miracles happening in our lives.
