Dromtarriffe GAA Club’s Country Music Event Is Not To Be Missed!

Dromtarriffe GAA Club invites you to their fundraising country music event ‘Dromtarriffe Goes Country’ which will be on Sunday, June 28th from 1pm to 7:30pm on the Dromtarriffe GAA Grounds, Rathcoole, Mallow, Co. Cork.

They are hosting a wonderful line-up of country music stars that feature; Claudia Buckley, Robert Mizzell, ‘Fiddling’ Mags McCarthy, Brendan Shine, and Jack Keogh and his band. Backing band on the day are the legendary Conquerors band.

Tickets are €30, non refundable. Tickets can be purchased from club members, online or on the day itself on entrance. U14 year olds are free,

accompanied by an adult. There will be a bar, food and jiving competition on the day. There is limited seating on the grounds so they encourage you to bring your own chair, as they don’t want to disappoint.

Days like these remind us what Mothers & Others is all about — getting together playing football, making memories, and having the craic with a great bunch of women. Thanks to our coach Patrick, and Eimear in The Sandpit House Bar, for hosting us that evening.

“Cycle of Life” In Memory of Mícheál “Hallie” O’Riordan

Kilbrin native, Mícheál O’Riordan, known and loved as “Hallie,” was a deeply cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend. As the youngest of six, he brought laughter, warmth, and connection to his family and found great joy in time spent with his nieces and nephews, sharing his love of sport, nature, music, and life.

On Saturday, 4th July, a group of Hallie’s family and friends will take part in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, covering approximately 170–180km in his honour. The cycle symbolises the ups and downs of life, and the importance of continuing forward with support.

Funds raised will support mental health initiatives, with a focus on building resilience among young people in local schools, as well as contributing to Jigsaw, the national youth mental health service.

Government Must Match Policy Ambition with Investment on the Ground, Says IRD Duhallow

IRD Duhallow highlights local impact as national pre-budget submission presented to Ministers.

IRD Duhallow has today welcomed the formal presentation of the Local Development Companies Network (LDCN) Pre-Budget Submission for Budget 2027 to senior Ministers and elected representatives at Buswells Hotel, Dublin, highlighting the critical role of community-led delivery in the IRD Duhallow region.

Representatives from IRD Duhallow were among those in attendance, where the submission was formally presented to Government, calling for increased investment in programmes that support individuals, families, and communities locally and nationwide.

The submission sets out a series of targeted measures— including increased funding for the Social Inclusion and

Community Activation Programme (SICAP), protection and expansion of LEADER funding, and strengthened supports for community-based services—which the network says are essential to ensure national policies deliver real impact on the ground.

Anne Maria Bourke, Chairperson of IRD Duhallow said: “We see every day in the IRD Duhallow region how communityled programmes make a real difference in people’s lives — whether it’s supporting people into employment, helping local enterprises grow, or strengthening community resilience. The national submission reflects the realities we are seeing at local level.”

CEO of IRD Duhallow, Maura Walsh added: “There is a clear gap between policy ambition and the resources available to deliver it on the ground. In IRD Duhallow, the demand for supports continues to

grow, and sustained investment is essential to ensure we can respond effectively to local needs.”

The LDCN submission comes as Government prepares to implement major national strategies, including the Roadmap for Social Inclusion 2026–2030 and the OECD Rural Policy Review, both of which rely on local delivery infrastructure to succeed.

Among the key national recommendations are an additional €6.1 million for SICAP, €10.2 million to address funding gaps in LEADER, and €12 million to strengthen community employment supports, alongside embedding €10 million in annual integration supports into core funding structures.

Local Development Companies collectively support more than 150,000 people and 6,000 community groups annually, delivering approximately €230 million in supports each year across Ireland.

IRD Duhallow Brings People Together For Refugee Week 2026

As part of “Refugee Week 2026”, and through the SICAP and MAP (Migrant Apprenticeship Programme) Ireland programmes, which aim to support migrants from diverse nationalities and backgrounds, IRD Duhallow organised a Family Fun day on Saturday 20th of June 2026 in Linn Gorm Kanturk.

Around 40 people, a mix of adults and children, attended this event.

The children took part in a variety of activities including board games, drawing, painting. Participants also received information about the MAP Ireland Programme and learned how to become involved

in the English language courses and Apprenticeship training opportunities.

For three hours, all of the participants enjoyed spending their time together, sharing their stories and experiences, discussing challenges and building new connections. The event provided an opportunity for people to meet, interact and strengthen community ties through a range of enjoyable activities.

Air Ambulance Continues to Soar Planning Granted To Upgrade Invaluable Service The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service Air Ambulance (HEMS) which is based in Rathcoole, Co. Cork, services the entire province of Munster as well as South Leinster and South Connacht.

It is no surprise therefore, that communities right across its substantial catchment area are thrilled with the announcement that Cork County Council has recently granted Planning Permission for enhancements and improvements to the Airfield.

The planning permission will facilitate the construction of a helipad, the extension of the runway, and upgrades to hard-surface infrastructure. The taxiway, helipad, and hangar upgrades will provide significant benefits to the HSE’s Air Ambulance Helicopter operations.

The current runway surface at Rathcooel Airfield is grass, which can present significant operational challenges during the winter months, so the primary driving force behind the improvements at the Airfield is providing a safer operating environment for all users as well as facilitating night-time returns for the air ambulance helicopter.

“The granting of planning permission by Cork County Council will help recover valuable operational days that are currently lost when the helicopter is unable to return to base at night. Up to now, when aircrew and medical teams have been stranded away from base overnight, the knockon effect has been restrictions on crew duty hours the following day” a spokesperson said.

The recent construction of the CUH helipad, announced by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin, has added a further dimension to the speed of care delivery for the HEMS service at Rathcool, as injured patients can now be transported directly to the hospital grounds. This facility is used multiple times each week.

Bringing Hope And Innovation To Rural Mental Health

On July 17th IRD Duhallow will welcome guests from both near and far to our first Rural Mental Health Conference. This conference brings together a unique mix of professionals and Duhallow community members for an event that will take a fresh perspective on mental health nationally, regionally and locally. The Rural Mental Health Conference is a new event, and part of IRD Duhallow’s broader efforts to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of our community.

Our theme for this Conference is “Innovations in Mental Health”, and we have speakers on the day who are leaders in their respective fields. Each speaker will highlight their area of work, how it contributes to addressing mental health challenges, and crucially, its relevance to the realities of mental health challenges in rural communities like Duhallow.

New ideas, models and approaches will be highlighted in order to demonstrate how we as a rural community can develop beyond crisis response and move towards prevention, education and empowerment in matters of mental health.

For over thirty years, IRD Duhallow has sought to contribute to the overall wellbeing and quality of life of our community. This has come in many forms, whether through training and upskilling, social enterprises, our free counselling supports, as well as many other initiatives. It is in this spirit that we are approaching our role as a positive force for mental wellbeing in our community.

Our Key Note Speaker on the day is Mary Butler TD, Minister

of State at the Department of Health with special responsibility for Mental Health. Minister Butler has been a driving force behind significant legislative changes in the area of mental health, recently overseeing the passing into law of the Mental Health Act 2026.

Catherine Brogan is Chair of the National Implementation and Monitoring Committee for Sharing the Vision, our national mental health policy. Catherine is also CEO of Suicide or Survive and a former chair of Mental Health Europe. Catherine will share insights into the importance of Sharing The Vision and explain how national policy translates to our local context.

Dr. Eve Griffin is CEO of the National Suicide Research Foundation, based in UCC, and leads Co-Prime, the first all-island collaborative research network in mental health. Dr Griffin will outline how research in mental health is conducted and how it shapes services and approaches to mental health in our community.

Brenda Healy is Director of ConnectWell and programme coordinator at the school of Adult Continuing Education in UCC. ConnectWell are a Mental Health Peer Support Network operating in Cork and Kerry who are currently collaborating with IRD Duhallow to establish the first Mental Health Peer Support Group in this area.

The family GP is still the first port of call for most people facing a challenge to their mental health.

realities of the challenges arising for our mental health in our community.

The experience of our own Duhallow community members will be shared through something we are calling “The Human Library”.

This unique and engaging feature of the conference will tackle stigma through real voices, real lived experience and real storytelling.

For professionals working in Duhallow, the Rural Mental Health Conference will be an opportunity for knowledge sharing and networking with both other professionals and community groups. It will also act as a bridge between supports and services operating locally, opening doors to collaboration and a more unified and collective response to the challenges to mental health that the people we support encounter.

For the local people of Duhallow, the Rural Mental Health Conference 2026 will be a celebration of local resilience, community spirit and innovation and will demonstrate how rural Ireland can be a leader in community-driven actions to support mental wellbeing.

The Rural Mental Health Conference will be on Friday, July 17th from 9:30am to approximately 3pm. Tickets are on sale now and priced at just €15. Lunch is included for all attendees.

A Mindful Moment

Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket There is no doubt that mindfulness is having a moment.

Mindfulness meditations are becoming popular as a way of quietening the mind and bringing a sense of calmness to our routine.

Any practice that involves focusing the mind to achieve stillness, even for a few moments is a mindfulness practice.

It can be overwhelming however to think about adding another practice to our already busy schedule but mindfulness is

easy to incorporate into our daily routine. For example, when out for a walk add mindfulness by making it a ‘colour walk’. Pick a colour that you like and as you walk notice all the times you see your chosen colour, in nature, in the building, all around you. This is a simple practice to focus the mind and lessen distractions.

Other tips for including mindfulness in our everyday routine might be to start small, set aside 2-3 minutes each day to take a short pause and focus on your breath. While doing tasks during the day, try to notice your mind wandering away from what you are

doing and gently bring it back to the task in front of you. Practicing grounding is another way to be mindful, taking note of your surroundings, focusing on your feet on the floor or your hands on your lap. Grounding helps to bring the mind away from stresses and worries by focusing on the present.

Paying attention to your breathing, surroundings and daily activities is mindfulness. It does not have to be complicated. It is a simple gift to give your racing mind, a gift of slowness and stillness. And who doesn’t want that!

From the Higgins Family to you - A message from Amanda Higgins on their recent Cancer Connect Fundraiser: To every single person, local businesses, friends, family and our work colleagues in Irish Rail, that donated to my fundraiser for Cancer Connect, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. A whopping €11,435 was raised. The massive support we received was just mind blowing to be honest, hearing peoples personal stories, the texts, phone calls we received really touches you and gives you such a motivation to drive you on and I suppose at times yes, I know I was a pain, but it worked.

All this started when my sister Maria needed the services of Cancer Connect, a charity that I had not heard of. Why? Because I suppose we didn’t have to, until cancer came calling out of the blue, to our door, so I wanted to do something as a simple thank you Cancer Connect, along with their drivers, provide such a phenomenal service, people that give up their time for others.

Ye can never be thanked enough, each and everyone of ye for the kindness that is given on a weekly basis.

Millstreet Boys National School Enjoy Two Great Victories

The 5th and 6th Class boys of Scoil Mhuire Millstreet enjoyed a fantastic soccer league campaign this year, culminating in a memorable victory in the final.

Their journey began with an impressive win over Mallow in the opening round. The boys showed great determination, skill, and teamwork to get their league campaign off to the perfect start. They followed this with another excellent performance against Bantry, displaying superb communication and work ethic throughout the match.

In the semi-final, Scoil Mhuire faced Gaelscoil Kinsale. The boys worked tirelessly for one another and demonstrated excellent teamwork, sportsmanship, and composure to secure their place in the final.

The final saw Scoil Mhuire take on Watergrasshill in an exciting and high-quality game. The boys produced an outstanding performance, playing some excellent football and showing the teamwork and determination that had been evident throughout the competition. Scoil Mhuire emerged victorious on a scoreline of 6–3 to claim the league title.

There were goals from Daniel O’Leary, who scored a superb hattrick, while Dominik Kesy added two goals and captain Daryl Dineen completed the scoring with a welltaken goal of his own.

Every member of the squad played an important role in the team’s success. The boys represented Scoil Mhuire with great pride and were a credit to themselves, their families, and the school. Their commitment, teamwork, and positive attitude

throughout the competition were exceptional.

Following the final whistle, captain Daryl Dineen had the honour of accepting the cup on behalf of his teammates, bringing a fitting end to a wonderful campaign.

The celebrations that followed reflected the hard work, dedication, and team spirit shown by the boys throughout the league.

Congratulations to all the players on a fantastic achievement and a thoroughly deserved league victory.

The entire school community is extremely proud of their success.

A special word of thanks goes to Michael McCarthy, whose dedication, commitment, and hard work as coach played a huge role in the team’s success. His guidance and support throughout the year have been greatly appreciated by all involved.

Now in it’s 19th year Ted’s Opel Vauxhall Run is one of the largest Opel/Vauxhall events in the whole of Ireland, attracting enthusiasts from throughout the country and beyond. This year’s run will take place on Saturday 8th August 2026. Based this year at Coolcower House, Macroom, Co. Cork. P12 E135.

Registration takes place on Saturday morning from 9am with a fee of €20 per car. Each car will receive a starter pack.

The first Award of the day will be presented at 10am and the cars will depart at 11am. The route will take in some of the fantastic scenery of Mid West Cork, Muskerry and the Gaeltacht Mhúscraí region.

Leaving Coolcower House the route will take in Hartnett’s Cross, Toonsbridge, Inchigeela, Lough Allua, Pipe Hill, Carriganass Castle, Coomhola Bridge, Ballylickey, Stopping at Cronin’s Centra / Service Station for the mid-way stop.

We will then continue to Kealkill, The Coosane Gap, Coppeen, Boxers Cross, Kilmurray, Lissarda and returning to Coolcower House for the Prizegiving and a BBQ. As always there is an array of Perpetual and Special Awards on offer, some will be presented during the day, there will be a raffle with numerous Prizes.

For Our Men, And The People Who Care About Them

By SHANE MCHALE The health and wellbeing of our men took centre stage this week as IRD Duhallow took part in Men’s Health Week 2026.

Men, on average, experience higher rates of the most common physical health risks compared to women. Men also have a lower life expectancy and statistically are still significantly more at risk of death by suicide.

For all of these reasons, every year in the run up to father’s day, Men’s Health Week is marked all over the country and around the world. The theme for this year’s Men’s Health Week was “Progress, Not Perfection”, highlighting the simple changes and small steps that our men and boys can take to improve their health.

This was the message that we carried to Kanturk Mart on Tuesday June 16th where Ellie Donovan, Social Farming

Coordinator, and Shane McHale, from the Rural Community Health Project, kicked the week off. Ellie highlighted the benefits of Social Farming for participants, for host farmers and for communities at large.

While Shane provided valuable information on physical and mental health, as well as outlining practical actions that men could take to improve their health.

Colm O’Connor, IRD Duhallow’s Rural Recreation Officer, led a guided walk over 5km of the Duhallow Way on Wednesday 17th. The walk was a great opportunity for exercise and connection and was followed by a well-earned cup of tea and scones afterwards.

Even the weather behaved itself, which added to the experience.

Development Officer Ciarán Carmody worked in collaboration with Western Duhallow Men’s Shed to bring defibrillator training to their shed in Kiskeam on Thursday June 18th. This life saving training was provided by Ayrton Group and supported through SICAP. Men’s Sheds have been a fantastic innovation nationally and our local sheds are making a big difference to the health and wellbeing of our men.

health was the focus of a special session of the Wellbeing & Recovery College here in IRD Duhallow. “Living with Depression & Beyond” was the topic of the day, with lots of lived experience of depression shared by the group.

We also explored life beyond depression and how we can live life to fullest, with or without symptoms of depression, and not defined by our diagnosis.

We rounded out the week on Friday with a Community Coffee morning in DCFS, Newmarket.

This meet up was open to all, and provided a great opportunity for connection and conversation. It also presented an ideal opportunity to dispense information and resources directly into the hands of our community members.

Men’s Health Week has now come to a close, however, the message remains, “progress not perfection”.

Making a change for our physical or mental health doesn’t have to be dramatic. Small changes add up to big impacts.

“Before We Die”: Why National Disability Issues Matter in Rural Communities

By MELISSA HOLLAND Recent coverage in Changing Ireland emphasised the growing voice of the “Before We Die” campaign, an advocacy group led by parents of people with intellectual disabilities who are calling for urgent Government action. They want to know their sons and daughters will be safe and supported after they are gone.

While this issue is being discussed at national level, it is one that resonates strongly here in rural Susan and Aoife pictured at home by RTE in October when Tony launched areas like Duhallow.

A National Issue Felt Locally Across Ireland, many families are living with a lack of longterm planning for people with disabilities. Data from the Disability Federation of Ireland highlights the scale of this issue closer to home. In Cork County alone, over 7,710 people are living with an intellectual disability. These figures show that the concerns being raised through the “Before We Die” campaign are not isolated but reflect the reality for many families across our own county. In rural communities, these challenges can be even more difficult. Access to services is often limited, transport is not always available, and families can have fewer local supports to rely on.

The Importance of Employment and Community Connection Through coordinating the WorkAbility programme in IRD Duhallow, I see every day how important it is for people with disabilities to feel connected to their community. The programme supports people with all types of disabilities, but we are particularly aware of the challenges faced by families of individuals with

intellectual disabilities.

Employment is a key part of this connection. It is not just about having a job, but about building relationships, and developing confidence. Getting involved locally, meeting people, and having a regular routine can make a significant difference to a person’s overall quality of life. However, as highlighted in the Changing Ireland article, employment opportunities and day services have not kept pace with demand. For many individuals, particularly in rural areas, barriers still exist when it comes to accessing meaningful and sustainable work. While the WorkAbility programme can have an important role for a person with an intellectual disability, it sits within a bigger system that needs continued investment and planning.

The Human Reality Behind the Policy What makes the “Before We Die” campaign so impactful is the lived experience behind it.

Parents spoke about the very real possibility that their adult children could lose their home, their daily

routine, and their connections if something were to happen to them. These are not distant concerns. They reflect the reality for families who have spent years navigating complex systems, often feeling isolated. At the same time, the campaign has created a sense of solidarity among parents.

Looking Ahead The issues raised by “Before We Die” highlight the need for long-term, coordinated planning across housing, health, and employment supports. For an area like Duhallow, this means continuing to strengthen local supports, improving access to opportunities, and ensuring that national policy reflects the realities on the ground. Initiatives like the WorkAbility programme are a key part of this response, helping people with disabilities access meaningful employment, and build independence. Ultimately, the message from families is clear: planning cannot be delayed. It must happen now, while families are still here to advocate for the people they care about most.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Sustainable consumption and production—part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals— is really about something simple: using what we have more wisely, wasting less, and looking after our environment for future generations.

While this sounds like a big global issue, it actually starts right here in our own communities.

In Ireland, we produce a huge amount of waste every year—over 14 million tonnes, including more than 3 million tonnes from our homes and businesses. Although we are recycling more than we used to, progress has slowed, and only about 4 out of every 10 bags of waste are recycled. The good news is that we’ve reduced landfill use dramatically over the years, showing that change is possible when people take action together.

Circular cups were used in distributing beverages at the IRD Duhallow Dawn Mass held in May 2026.

Sustainable Consumption In IRD Duhallow, we are already playing our part through practical, community-led initiatives.

One great example is Furniture Revamp, where old furniture is given a second life instead of being thrown away. A sofa can have a few springs replaced, a chest of drawers may just need a new runner, a dining seat a new covering. These items can be used for many more years. Or be creative yourself and give a quirky look to a chair that might have ended up in landfill. It’s one of many simple ideas, and it makes a real difference—saving materials, reducing waste, and supporting local skills Community events are also an area where small changes can have a big impact. Single-use cups, for example, are used for just a few minutes but contribute to a huge global problem—hundreds

of billions are thrown away each year, and very few are recycled. By introducing Circular Cups at events in Duhallow, we can cut down on waste significantly. In fact, using reusable cups can reduce event waste by over 80% when they are used again and again.

Sustainable Production Another project that is gathering a lot of interest in Ireland is paint reuse. Unused paint in Ireland is combined with hazardous waste and exported for incineration. In IRD Duhallow, the Relove Paint project ensures some of this paint have a different faith. Unused water-based paint brought to Kanturk, Millstreet, Mallow and Macroom civic amenity sites is screened and collected to be remixed. Many of us have leftover paint sitting in sheds or garages— on average, Irish households store between 6 and 17 tins. Instead of letting it go to waste, this paint

can be collected, repurposed, and redistributed for community use. It’s a great example of how one person’s leftover can become another’s resource.

What’s clear from all of this is that sustainability isn’t about making life harder—it’s about making smarter choices. Repairing instead of replacing, reusing instead of throwing away, and supporting local initiatives can all make a difference.

Across Europe, nearly half of household waste is now recycled, which shows progress—but also that there is still more we can do.

Rural communities like Duhallow have a real strength when it comes to leading change: people working together.

Everyone can play a part.

Choosing refurbished items, supporting reuse schemes, and cutting down on single-use products are small steps that add up over time.

In IRD Duhallow, we are already showing that positive change is possible. By building on these efforts, we can reduce waste, save resources, and create a cleaner, more sustainable future for our community—proving that even small actions, taken locally, can have a big impact.

Celebrating 45 Years of Medjugorje

“I am coming among you because I desire to be your mother- your intercessor” (From Our Lady’s message, March 18, 2012.)

This year, 2026, has been a special year in Medjugorje as the world celebrates 45 years of Our Lady’s apparitions.

Medjugorje, a little village in Bosnia Herzegovina, was unknown until June 1981 when Our Lady first appeared and this has not alone changed the life of the visionaries but the entire world.

It all began on June 24th .feast day of St. John the Baptist when a beautiful young woman appeared, holding the baby Jesus in her arms. The children who saw her were frightened and ran away. The following evening, they returned to the same place and again saw Our Lady who was alone on this occasion. Vicka, Mirjana, Ivanka, Marija, Ivan and the youngest, Jakov, who was only ten years old, were drawn towards her and she spoke to them. Our Lady introduced herself as the Queen of Peace.

This place is called Podbrdo, now known as Apparition Hill. This was June 25th, 1981 and this date now marks the Anniversary date.

Our Lady’s Messages “Dear Children, I have come to tell you that God does exist.” (June 25, 1981)

Lady told them that she had chosen Medjugorje because there were so many true believers there.

The Visionaries The Visionaries, who have been tremendous witnesses to Our Lady’s presence over all these years, have had to undergo terrible persecution and have on many occasions undergone rigorous testing by the most modern scientific methods available.

Three of the visionaries - Ivan, Marija and Vicka - have daily apparitions while the other threeJakov. Mirjana and Ivanka - see her once a year. All of the visionaries have been given secrets which will be revealed to the world at the appropriate time.

Our Lady’s Call.

“If you knew how much I love you, you would cry with joy.”

Our Lady’s call to conversion is a gentle one. She wants to bring us all to know and to love her son, Jesus, truly present in the Mass and Holy Eucharist. She is continuously calling us to pray the rosary.

“Dear Children; Today, I invite you all so that your prayer be prayer with the heart. May each of you find time for prayer so that, in prayer, you discover God. May your everyday be filled with a prayer of thanksgiving to God for life and for all that you have”April 25 1991.

This was Our Lady’s first message and it was significant to the people of Medjugorje as they had suffered terrible persecution under a Communist regime who told them that God did not exist. In this small region, 66 priests were massacred and many of the people were thrown into prison and denied jobs, but they persisted in their faith. Our

is recognised as the confessional centre of the world as pilgrims unburden themselves and start anew, some going to confession for the first time in many years Medjugorje Today Looking back over the last forty five years, we think of the millions of people who have come from all over the world and climbed the Hill of Apparition and Cross Mountain.

We remember those who prayed at Blue Cross, the Church of St. James and the other special places of prayer which are made holy by the presence of Our Lady. Still, so many have not listened to Our Lady’s call and do not even realize that Our Lady is still appearing every day. Her continued presence in Medjugorje is an amazing gift to us at a time when our world is truly upside down. She has asked us to persevere and not be afraid and she has promised us, “In the end My Immaculate Heart will triumph”.

Vatican Approval of Medjugorje.

On the 19th September 2024, the Vatican approved devotion to Our Lady of Medjugorje granting a nihil obstat (“no objection”).

This acknowledges the abundant spiritual fruits of the pilgrims and positive effects such as abundant conversions, frequent return to the sacraments and deepened prayer lives among pilgrims. Let us hope that nothing will stand in the way for all who have not experienced Medjugorje to now answer Our Lady’s call, “Come and see.”
