Music, Culture and Craic Mark Successful Rockchapel Gathering

The Rockchapel Gathering 2026, held from June 5th to 7th, proved to be a resounding success, bringing together the local community and visitors from far and wide for a memorable celebration of culture, music, and heritage.

This year’s musical line-up featured an exciting blend of well-known acts and local favourites, with standout performances from Tully, The Rising, The Gallivanters and Damien Mullane.

Beyond the music, the gathering offered a packed schedule of events and activities across the

village. Highlights included the hugely popular Kids Tractor Run, which once again delighted younger attendees, along with a lively Family Fun Day and the welcoming Community Cuppa Morning.

Visitors also enjoyed craft displays, exhibitions, and a variety of live performances that added to the festive atmosphere throughout the weekend.

Overall, the Rockchapel Gathering 2026 was a vibrant and enjoyable celebration that highlighted the very best of the area.

Newmarket Community Survey Highlights What Matters Most to Locals

At the end of 2025, the Newmarket Community Development Association (NCDA) invited residents to take part in a townwide Community Needs Survey as part of its ongoing work to plan for and shape the future of the town.

A total of 161 people shared their views, hopes, and ideas for how Newmarket can continue to grow and thrive.

What emerged was a strong sense of pride in the town, along with a clear desire to keep improving it for families, businesses, and future generations.

One of the most notable findings from the Community Needs Survey came from responses to the question on the most important areas for improvement.

Residents were clear in what they want to see addressed. The top priorities were Town Appearance & Public Realm and Roads, Traffic & Transport, reflecting a strong desire to tackle dereliction, and to improve the town’s look

and feel, and to deal with longstanding issues around speeding, parking, and safety. Calls for better Recreation, Sport & Amenities, also featured strongly, highlighting interest in walking routes, sports facilities, and outdoor spaces that support active living. Community Events & Social Life also ranked strongly, reflecting a desire for more opportunities to bring people together in Newmarket.

What People in Newmarket Want to See Happen

Residents shared a wide range of ideas for projects they’d love to see in the town. Popular suggestions included a swimming pool, improved sports facilities, and more walkways and running routes, and a running track.

People also highlighted the need for a creche, additional housing, and practical measures such as speed ramps.

On the community side, there was strong interest in more events, a regular market, and

enhanced Christmas lights to bring extra atmosphere to the town.

Where Improvements Are Most Needed

Survey responses highlighted several locations in need of attention. The biggest concern was derelict and vacant buildings (18.7%), followed by footpaths and accessibility (16.3%), lighting (15.4%), and traffic and parking (14.8%). The Town Park was also a significant concern at 13.9%, while playground improvements (8.8%), and Island Wood (6.7%) were highlighted as community spaces that would benefit from upgrades.

Where Residents Would Spend Funding

When asked where funding should be directed if it becomes available, respondents were clear: sports facilities came out on top at approximately 21%, followed by town appearance and dereliction, lighting, traffic and speed ramps, and playground improvements.

Other priorities included a greenway, Tidy Towns and cleanliness initiatives, crèche and childcare provision, public toilets, and a community hub.

Events and Activities People Want to See

Residents expressed a strong appetite for more activities in the town, with youth and teen activities, family and community events, and seasonal events leading the way. There was also interest in sports activities and clubs as well as cultural, music, and arts programming.

Conclusion The survey results offer a clear snapshot of what matters most to the people of Newmarket.

Residents have set out a thoughtful and practical vision for their community. These insights will guide the NCDA as it shapes and prioritises future projects for the benefit of the whole community. The NCDA extends its sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the survey and share their views.

The Gearagh

IRD Duhallow Social Farming Coordinator On my way back from Biodiversity in your Neighbourhood training in Inchigeelagh, I stopped for a walk at The Gearagh Nature Reserve, two kilometres outside Macroom. The water level was particularly low revealing the remnants of what once was, conjuring up several conflicting emotions. Sadness for a community whose home and habitats were destroyed, and anger at the State for allowing this destruction of our natural heritage.

On the other hand, I am inspired by nature’s resilience. Today, the serenity and abundant biodiversity make it difficult to imagine the devastation that took place 70 years ago.

In 1954 the Gearagh was flooded by the ESB to facilitate the building of two hydroelectric dams at Inniscarra and Carrigadrohid.

Until then ‘An Gaorthadh’ was an ancient native oak forest, Ireland’s last primeval river forest.

Half the forest was felled during the process. The eerie stumps, which are visible at low tide, are a reminder of this traumatic event. Kevin Corcoran, a local ecologist and author of Saving Eden, recalls the grief of being held in his grandmother’s arms as the Gearagh’s Forest community watched the flooding of their homeland (Corcoran, 2021, Saving Eden).

Despite this, nature thrives at The Gearagh and around 300 acres of woodland remain. It is the only extensive alluvial woodland, and one of the last surviving inland delta woodlands in Western Europe. Alluvial woodlands are rare, highly biodiverse riparian forests found along floodplains and

river valleys. Oak, Ash, and Willow grow on small islands, linked by narrow channels and paths. The Gearagh is a designated Natura 2000 site owned by the State, though mostly inaccessible to the public at present. It is a Special Area of Conservation for Forest Habitats and a Special Protection Area for Wetland Birds under European Union law. The Gearagh hosts a wide diversity of birds attracting both summer and winter migrants. Some examples include Mallards, Wigeon, Grey Heron, Coots and Greylag Geese.

Talks are underway which

might see The Gearagh become Cork’s first National Park. Part of the Gearagh Special Area of Conservation is a designated Nature Reserve under the Irish Wildlife Act, and the reservoir is a wildfowl sanctuary. The land is still managed by the ESB, but the hope is for the National Parks and Wildlife Service to take control and for The Gearagh to achieve National Park status. There is no undoing it’s tragic past, but granting The Gearagh National Park status would acknowledge this valuable habitat in the present.

Banteer CFC crowned Cork AUL Premier A’ League Champions

A huge night for CFC Banteer as the club lifted the Cork AUL Premier A’ League cup at home in the Banteer 4G Astro pitch on Friday night last.

CFC Banteer will now compete at the highest level of Cork AUL in 2026/2027, the Premier League!

A comprehensive win capped off a wonderful season on Friday and saw Banteer wrap up the league in style and beating Springfield AFC CFC Banteer 6 - 1 Springfield AFC Goals on the night came from Stephen Sheehan (X3), Stewart O’Keeffe (X2) and an own goal.

A massive well done to all players and management on a superb season, completing back-to-back league wins on the back of last season’s treble!

Building Sustainable Communities in Duhallow

Community Services Team Leader, IRD Duhallow Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) is one of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Its aims are to ensure that all communities are inclusive, safe, resilient, and environmentally sustainable.

Across Duhallow, the idea of “sustainable communities” is not just a global ambition it is a lived reality shaped by local people, organisations, and collaborative action and can be seen daily where community led development plays a vital role in shaping quality of life.

IRD Duhallow CLG has long been at the heart of this work, through a wide range of programmes and initiatives which support the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of the region.

Strengthening Community Resilience; A key aspect of SDG 11 is building resilient communities that can respond to social and economic challenges. IRD Duhallow has consistently invested in community development, supporting local groups and social enterprises. By leveraging in funding, delivering training, and providing capacity building supports our board and staff help to empower communities to identify their own needs and develop solutions using the bottom up approach to rural development.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP), Workability Programme and Social Farming Project all play a pivotal role in supporting disadvantaged individuals and groups, fostering inclusion, and strengthening community participation.

Enhancing Rural Infrastructure and Services; Access to services and infrastructure is critical to sustainable communities. Through the LEADER Programme, IRD Duhallow supports both community and business development.

Duhallow’s rich heritage is a source of pride and identity, and IRD Duhallow plays a role in preserving and promoting this through community projects, tourism initiatives, and environmental programmes such as our EIP Programme, Duhallow Beekeepers, and biodiversity projects.

Promoting Social Inclusion and Wellbeing; Creating inclusive communities means ensuring that all voices are heard and all people

feel valued. IRD Duhallow places a strong focus on supporting older people, young people, migrants, and those experiencing disadvantage.

Bealtaine 2026 Round-Up

Development Officer, IRD Duhallow Bealtaine 2026 got off to a wonderful start with the annual Dawn Mass held at the source of the Blackwater River. Later that afternoon, our Social Farming Coordinator, Ellie Donovan, hosted a successful plant sale, which attracted great community support.

Throughout the month, a wide variety of events took place across the region. Active Retirement groups played a major role in the celebrations, with highlights including tea dances in Donoughmore and Rockchapel, the Castlemagner Senior Club Cabaret Evening, a bridge afternoon hosted by Brogeen Bridge Club, and Dromtariffe Mass at the Holy Well. These events provided excellent opportunities

for socialising, reminiscing, and strengthening community spirit.

The James O’Keeffe Institute was a hub of activity during Bealtaine, hosting a varied programme of events including an art class, movie afternoon, conversational Irish class, pitch and putt taster session, and a special workshop on grief and loss.

The events were well supported and provided participants with opportunities to learn, socialise and try something new.

One of the standout events on the Bealtaine calendar each year is Jack’s Mystery Tour, and 2026 was no exception. This year’s destination was the Kingdom of Kerry, although participants only discovered this as the day unfolded. The group enjoyed tea and scones at the Rose Hotel in Tralee before travelling on to Dingle Aquarium for a guided tour.

Lunch was served at the famous Paudie O’Sé’s, followed by a visit to the Blasket Centre, where everyone took in the spectacular coastal views.The day concluded with dinner at the fabulous Devon Inn Hotel, where both the food and the hospitality received top marks from all in attendance.

Overall, it was a fantastic day out and a fitting highlight of another successful and enjoyable Bealtaine festival.

Bealtaine 2026 once again demonstrated the value of bringing people together through culture, creativity, learning and social connection. A heartfelt thank you goes to all the organisers, volunteers and participants whose enthusiasm and dedication made this year’s festival such a memorable one. We look forward to doing it all again next year.

Around May also, the trees are loaded with beautiful small white flowers that will slowly turn pink as the month progresses. Beautiful to look at but we dare not bring it into our homes in case it curses us. It is the Hawthorn of course.

And, we are flat out waving at different sequences of them to banish any bad luck. They are the Magpie of course.

Not to mention the ladders we have to avoid and the umbrellas we only open outdoors. We are a very superstitious bunch really.

Even though these beliefs are not scientifically supported, we follow them anyway. Mainly because they make us believe that we have some control over uncertainty. We dislike uncertainty as it causes anxiety so we will do whatever we can to reduce it.

Following these traditions can also boost confidence as we start to associate the rituals with success, even if it is a placeboeffect. Positive superstitions can also encourage optimism and hope for the future, which lifts our mood.

Shared superstitions can also connect us as traditions can foster

a sense of belonging. They also bring a feeling of being lucky.

Feeling lucky can increase our confidence, our willingness to take on challenges and that can lead to better outcomes overall.

So, keep listening for the cuckoo, keep the hawthorn out and do not walk under any ladders. It has kept you safe so far so don’t stop now.

‘Band of Brothers’ - Dromtarriffe GAA Reunites Legendary Junior Football Team

Dromtariffe GAA club held a special function in the club rooms on Sunday last the 26th of May to honour the 1973/1974 Junior football panel players trainers selectors who won back to back Duhallow championships in those years.

A great crowd gathered to celebrate this occasion. Following dinner the club presented a medal to all involved to remember their great achievements in 73/74.

It was also a great opportunity to view the superb facilities at the GAA grounds and the work that’s taking place there.

Everyone had a wonderful day and it was great to renew old acquaintances.

Duhallow GAA History

WORK is advancing on the History of Duhallow GAA with a deadline for material fast approaching. The Division was formally established as an independent Board on January 18th, 1933.

Prior to 1933, many clubs were in operation and enjoyed success.

Duhallow holds a rich and diverse history influenced by tradition, culture and Gaelic games.

The enduring passion of Gaelic Games has touched every family and community within Duhallow, work is underway on scribing the triumphs, controversies and disappointments in Duhallow County Senior Football Champions 1990 the new publication.

To ensure that as much information as possible is included, a sub committee working on the project is inviting GAA patrons and the general public who hold the possession of old photographs, team lists, interesting information or any other memorabilia can contact John Murphy or John Tarrant to make arrangements to share any such items.

The greatest care will be taken to ensure all items are returned safely after being scanned or copied.

To highlight the proud legacy and its vital contribution to Gaelic games and community life, check out the scrap books and drawers for old articles, photographs and interesting memorabilia relating to Duhallow, its GAA clubs and members.

Empowering Young Voices: Duhallow Students Public Speaking Programme

In October 2025, IRD Duhallow’s Youth and Education Working Group was delighted to welcome young students from national schools across the region Development Officer, who had completed a series of public speaking workshops funded through the IRD Duhallow SICAP Programme. These workshops were part of a dedicated programme designed specifically for primary school children, making the skills of public speaking accessible, engaging, and fun. Through the programme, students were encouraged and supported to speak confidently about that held personal meaning for them. Anotoinette O’Brien chose to speak about G.P. Dr. Zelie Daly.

My Hero, Dr. Zelie Daly

Dr. Zelie Daly is our family doctor, and she has she was so good to our family, especially in the last 2 years, when my grandad got very sick, and she had to call to our house. I lived all my life with grandad in our house.

With this in mind, this is the reason she is my hero. Mammy would have to ring her to call to Grandad, and she would call either early in the morning or late at night.

Grandad was very fond of her, and you could often hear them laughing together, even though Grandad was in a lot of pain.

When Zelie used to call, she always asked how we were, and what we were up to. She always showed interest.

No matter how busy she was, she never showed she was in a rush to go to the next house. When Grandad was gravely ill, she called more frequently, and she would give us a hug, and tell us how proud grandad was of us. We used to have lots of giggles with her.

On one occasion she called and said, how is everyone in Lower Road? Myself and Theresa, my sister, said to Dr. Daly “There is no such place as lower road. It is Granavoraig”. We all started laughing when she said, your grandad thought you well. He absolutely hated our address being called the lower road. She said lesson learned, and always said Granavoraig to us then. When grandad passed away, she called to our house and gave us all such a lovely hug. I still love the hug she gave us, and she also told us that Grandad has the best carers in us.

She said we made him so happy, and he loved living with us. Without Zelie’s help, Grandad couldn’t have stayed with us, and got his wish to stay at home to see our see out his last few months. He was given 3 months, but with help from Zelia to support Mammy and keep Grandad comfortable, we got 10 precious more months with him. Do we ever really stop and think of all the work people around us do? I’m so glad I was and still am able to meet my hero. Who is your hero? And that is why Dr. Daly is mine.

This project is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union.

Members of the Newmarket Thursday Club enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with guest speaker Lorraine Leahy from Carraig Donn. Lorraine shared expert fashion advice on updating and restyling wardrobes and showcased pieces from the latest collection. The talk was both informative and enjoyable, leaving members inspired with fresh styling ideas.

June - Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

We associate the month of June with The Sacred Heart of Jesus and this year we celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 12th.

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun, revealed to the world the great love of Jesus for us. She had a series of apparitions between 1673 and 1675 when He appeared to her from the Blessed Sacrament and said, “Behold this Heart which loves so much and yet, is loved so little in return.” He explained that the thorns around His Heart are symbolic of the pain that He suffers because of the ingratitude and indifference of people towards His love in the Blessed Sacrament. Then, Jesus said that He suffers more now because of this indifference and ingratitude than He did during his entire Passion.

eight days of the Feast of Corpus Christi. He wanted to make it unmistakably clear that devotion to His Sacred Heart is devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. The Blessed Sacrament is Jesus living in our midst today.

His appeal to St. Margaret Mary is more urgent today than it was then. “I thirst with such a terrible thirst to be loved in this most Blessed Sacrament.” His message is that the Eucharist is the person of Jesus Himself. In the Blessed Sacrament, He said we would find the most loving of all fathers, our very best friend, with the tenderest of all hearts.

The Church has a great mission in the world to proclaim the redeeming love of God in Christ.

Feast Day of the Sacred Heart.

This is why Jesus specifically requested, through St. Margaret Mary, that a feast in honour of His Sacred Heart be established in the Liturgical Calendar within

Divine Mercy Devotion.

Divine Mercy is considered a continuation and fulfilment of the Feast of the Sacred Heart. While the Sacred Heart reveals the pure love of God, Divine Mercy puts that love into action for a fallen world.

Together they flow from the exact same source, the pierced Heart of Jesus.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus, revealed to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, focuses on the infinite love of God and calls us to make acts of loving reparation for the sins of the world. It is about our love and devotion toward God. The Divine Mercy, revealed to St. Faustina Kowalski, is the love of God and His Mercy reaching down to meet us.

In her diary “Divine Mercy in My Soul”, Jesus reveals to St. Faustina His great love and mercy for the world. In Diary Entry 1397, He tells her, “The loss of each soul plunges me into mortal sadness.

You always console me when you pray for sinners. The prayer most pleasing to me is prayer for the conversion of sinners. This prayer
