INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Pause Brunch at IRD Duhallow

Last Saturday, on International Women’s Day, women from all over the community gathered for a special event dedicated to health, wellness, and empowerment. IRD Duhallow hosted the ‘Mná-Pause’ Brunch, a gathering designed to provide valuable insights and support for women navigating all stages of peri-menopause, menopause and post menopause. The sold-out event took place at the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket and was attended by over 70 women. International Women’s Day is a time to honour

the achievements of women while also addressing important issues affecting their lives. Menopause is a significant phase in many women’s journey, yet it is often overlooked in mainstream discussions about health and wellbeing. The ‘Mná-Pause’ Brunch aimed to change that by offering education, expert advice, and a sense of community for women experiencing menopause.

The float proudly boasts that Kerry will win the Liam MacCarthy Cup. The pupils put a lot of effort into their float, a wonderful display of local pride and the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. International Women’s Day

Mná Pause Brunch

Expert Insights and Support

Attendees heard from expert speakers who specialise in menopause and women’s health. Dr. Máire Cleary, a renowned menopause specialist, shared her knowledge on medical approaches, symptoms, and treatments available to help manage menopause effectively. Triona Casey, a menopause practitioner, offered practical advice on holistic wellbeing, lifestyle changes, nutrition and self-care strategies.

Physiotherapist Kevina Reel was the third speaker and has a special interest in treating many of the issues that women experience throughout their lives. Kevina had the audience captured with her practical advice and tips.

Together, these experts provided a comprehensive look at menopause, helping women understand what to expect, how to manage symptoms, and where to seek support. The event aimed to empower women with the information they need to make informed health decisions and approach this phase of life with confidence.

Special Guest: Breda Stack, The Declutter Therapist

Adding a unique perspective to the event, Breda Stack, known as ‘The Declutter Therapist,’ was the final guest speaker. She discussed the connection between mental health and physical surroundings, sharing insights on how decluttering can positively impact wellbeing. As menopause often brings significant life transitions, Breda’s approach helps women to create a more supportive and calming environment for themselves during this period.

A Relaxing and Engaging Morning

The ‘Mná-Pause’ Brunch wasn’t just about information—it was also about connection and relaxation. Attendees enjoyed a delicious brunch while mingling with likeminded women going through similar experiences. The event fostered a supportive community where women shared stories, asked questions, and gained reassurance that they were not alone in their journey.

Empowering Women

The ‘Mná-Pause’ Brunch Event idea initially came from the IRD Duhallow Women’s Forum which is a group established in 1997 which plays an important role in improving the quality of life for women in Duhallow. Chair of the forum Judy O’Leary explains that

“The Mná Pause Event and other similar events provide women with an opportunity to share information and ideas as a collective, this collaboration and networking successfully builds confidence and empowers us all”

Judy O’Leary, Chair and founding member of the Duhallow Women’s Forum

The event was sponsored and organised by the team at IRD Duhallow, the Rural Community Health Project and IRD Duhallow Skillnet, programmes that recognise the importance of promoting women’s health and education. The delicious Brunch for the event came from Duhallow Community Food Services and was thoroughly enjoyed by everybody.

This International Women’s Day, IRD Duhallow brought women together to celebrate and gain valuable insights into a critical aspect of their wellbeing. The ‘Mná-Pause’ Brunch proved to be an informative, uplifting, and inspiring event that left attendees feeling empowered and connected.

A New Season

No matter what side you fall on the seasons debate- does Spring start on the first of February or first of March? - you will have to agree the season has arrived by now. The mornings and evenings a stretching a little bit further every day, daffodil are adding colour to the garden and the brown spindly branches are beginning to sprout a few buds.

It would be fair to say that things have changed in the world since last Spring arrived, watching the daily news now can be a distressing event compared to this time last year. Watching world leaders get more and more unpredictable, headlines becoming

more upsetting every day, there is no doubt that it can affect our mental health in a very negative way. It is very natural to worry about what is to come. But, we all need to take care of ourselves and those around us, focusing on what is within our control can help that.

Of course, we don’t want to dismiss or ignore the turmoil and upset in the world right now, but we also have a life to live. Here is a few things that might help:

• Control your controllables, let go of what you cannot control. Focus on your own daily routine or helping in your community to build connections that count.

• Limit news consumptions, and make sure your news comes from a reliable source. Try to avoid doom-scrolling.

• Practice mindfulness or

grounding. This can really help to stay focused on the present moment instead of thinking about the future which is always unknown.

• Help others in your community. Acts of kindness towards others can make a big difference- redressing the balance.

Remembering the words of Maya Angelou can be really helpful during these times- “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them”

We may have watched Vance and Trump treat President Zelenskyy so poorly and disrespectfully last week, but we don’t have to be reduced by that. We show respect to others, we live a meaningful life and we enjoy our Spring.

Springtime Relief: Irish Remedies for Hay Fever Sufferers

As trees blossom and early grasses and flowers come into bloom, many people start to feel the familiar symptoms of hay fever. Itchy eyes, blocked sinuses, and relentless sneezing can turn a beautiful season into an uncomfortable one. Luckily, there are some fantastic Irish products available to help ease these symptoms naturally.

One standout option is Somega Quercetin, a tasty and effective supplement suitable for all ages. Quercetin is a powerful polyphenol found naturally in fruit, vegetables, herbs, coffee, green tea, and even wine. Foods such as apples (4mg per 100g), blueberries (11mg), chili

pepper (30mg), and red onions (45mg) contain quercetin, but getting a therapeutic dose from diet alone would be challenging.

That’s where Somega’s liposomal formulation comes in—it provides 500mg of quercetin per 15ml serving, making it far more accessible and bioavailable than relying on food sources. To put it into perspective, you’d need to eat 12.5kg of apples, 4kg of blueberries, or 1kg of red onions to match just one serving! Quercetin has natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antihistamine properties, helping to ease hay fever by reducing histamine release. Plus, the added vitamin C supports the immune system and may further lower histamine levels.

Another great natural remedy is Dr Clare Apothecary’s Allertone Tincture, a carefully crafted herbal blend designed to provide relief from seasonal allergies. It contains bladderwrack, nettle leaf, dandelion root, chamomile, cornflower, marshmallow leaf, elderflowers, and eyebright, all known for their soothing and anti-inflammatory effects. Whether you’re dealing with nasal congestion, throat discomfort, or general allergy symptoms, Allertone Tincture offers a gentle, natural solution.

With these excellent Irish products, you can breathe a little easier and enjoy the beauty of spring without the sneezing!

MEP Seán Kelly Inspires Students in Duhallow

Students from Scoil Phobail Rathmore and Millstreet Community School gave a very warm welcome to MEP for Ireland South Seán Kelly on his recent visit to their schools under the Communicating Europe Initiative. Organised by IRD Duhallow, students in six local second level schools have already learned about the European Union through interactive workshops delivered by guest speaker Dr. Brendan O’Keeffe. This initiative supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs, has involved students learning about 50 years plus of Irish EU membership and the changes that have occurred during this period, especially in relation to rural development. To date over 530 students in the Duhallow region have participated in interactive workshops and in person meetings with visiting MEPs from the Ireland South Constituency.

Initiated by the IRD Duhallow Equality Working Group in conjunction with Millstreet Community School, a bright and colourful mural has been created on the wall of the school gym. Undertaken by Millstreet Community School students in collaboration with professional artist, Shane O’Malley this creative piece celebrates interculturalism,

The Feast of The Annunciation

On March 25th the Feast of the Annunciation, we celebrate the most significant feast day in the Church calendar. On this day, Mary said Yes to God’s plan to send His son Jesus into the world to die on The Cross for all of us. On this day, Mary said Yes to become the Mother of God.

This changed everything and it is of great significance – that Jesus who is God became a little baby in His mother’s womb so that He could teach us about the love of His Father in Heaven and thus fulfill God’s promise of sending a redeemer to save us from our sins.

In the Gospel story of Luke, we read that God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth to a virgin, Mary. She was engaged to a man whose name was Joseph of the House of David. The angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a son and shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God. Now indeed, Elizabeth, your cousin has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing is impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

The Annunciation marks the entry of The Holy Spirit coming into our world in a powerful way. Jesus is conceived in Mary’s womb by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the same Holy Spirit that hovered over The Earth and brought everything into being at the beginning of Creation. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus is made present to us at the Consecration of the Mass and will remain with us always until the end of time. This same Holy Spirit is very much with us today as helper and guide. He is our advocate, counsellor, comforter, sanctifier and strengthener. We receive the Holy Spirit at our Baptism which includes all the gifts of the Holy Spirit and they are confirmed in us at our Confirmation. It is our responsibility to nurture these precious sanctifying gifts. When we grow in our faith in the power of the Holy Spirit, we receive the fruits of the Holy Spirit which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. There are also charismatic gifts which we can receive as we grow stronger in faith.

The Annunciation story raises our humanity to the Divine as Jesus becomes one of us and we are now brothers and sisters in Christ by our baptism and by His death on The Cross we are united with Him and can live forever in His Heavenly kingdom.

From the Annunciation story we have the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary and the Angelus prayer. “The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary…”We also have the first part of the Hail Mary which is the Angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary, “Hail Mary full of grace, The Lord is with you.” The second part of the

Hail Mary is Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary when she visited her. She cried, “Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus”.

We also have the wonderful prayer of the Magnificat, Mary’s prayer in praise of God. “My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on His servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy is His name! … “ Luke 1;46-55.

Mary is given the title of Mother of God and this was confirmed by the First Vatican Council of Ephesus, held at the Church of Mary in 431. The Council decreed that Mary is the Mother of God because her son Jesus is one person who is both God and man, divine and human. She is mother of the whole human race and we are truly blessed to have a mother who loves us and cares for us and will not rest until we are safely secure in the arms of her son, Jesus.

Mary, Mother of God and our mother, pray and intercede for us.
