Duhallow Choral Society will return to Rehearsals on October 5th at a new Venue. It will start at 7.30pm in Culturlann Amhlaoibh - Mc Auliffe Heritage Centre, Church Street, Newmarket. MILLSTREET

Millstreet Community Council Ltd. is looking to the people of Millstreet to come up with a theme for the 2022 calendar. If you have any ideas or suggestions, then you are invited to email millstreetcommunitycouncil20@ gmail.com before 6pm on Friday September 17th 2021. Once a theme has been selected, we will invite people to submit suitable photographs for consideration.

The proceeds from the Millstreet 2021 calendar will be presented to the Canon O’Donovan Centre, Meals on Wheels Service in October.

Kanturk Scouts are holding a clothes collection fundraiser to fund a permanent den in town on Saturday 18 September from 9:30am until 1:00pm at the Courthouse, Kanturk.

“We work with young people age 6 to 18 and have no permanent space for meetings, or a field for camping and outdoor skills” said Frank Mulcahy, Scout Leader. “We hope soon to be given a premises, but it will need a lot of refurbishment,” he added. “It will be an investment for the youth of Kanturk and its hinterland, so I hope the people of Kanturk will support the clothes collection.”

Danny, Maura, and Jackie Healy Rea welcome funding of €44,550 for safety measures in Gneevegullia village. These measures will be implemented near the National School, and will include the construction of a footpath adjacent to the school carpark and community centre.

Works are also planned on existing pedestrian crossing, signs, road lining, and road markings.

Community News Alzheimers Memory Walk Kilbrin 2021 Sinead Murphy O’Rahilly is once again organising the Alzheimer’s memory walk. This charity is close to Sinead and her family. Her husband Michael was diagnosed with Dementia in 2017 at 45 years old.

Michael and Sinead have two children - Luke(17) and Ava(14) - and as a family, receive ongoing tremendous support from the ASI .

All funds raised here will go directly to this great cause.

The guided walk will start at 12 noon on Sunday 19th September at Marybrook P51R27, and continue to Subulter, Knocknanuss, and onto Ballyheen piers. It will be a mix of road and field and will take approx 1.5-2 hours. There will be parking available here and signposted on the day.

Everyone is invited to the Kilbrin social club afterwards for light refreshments. There will be a bar food menu available from 3-5.30pm.

All service will be in line with current Covid regulations of indoor dining but we will also have outdoor sheltered seating. Reservations are advisable by contacting Claire Buttimer on 087-7833636.

This is followed by a live music session at 5pm - Ceoil agus craic guaranteed for the evening.

MCS students Darragh Kelleher, Diarmuid Cronin, Jamie Buckley, and Daniel Buckley, who all attained the maximum 625 points this year.

The class of 2021 Leaving Cert students celebrated their fantastic results, with everyone attaining very good results. The group showed great determination and resilience to have come through two challenging years with such success. Four students attained the maximum 625 points, including twins Jamie and Daniel Buckley, a remarkable achievement. Congratulations to the class of ‘21, who are a credit to their parents, their school, and their community. We wish them continued success in all they do.

Students enjoyed a break from class and a treat to mark the fantastic exam results and to enjoy the last of the late summer. Students have settled into school really well and it’s great to be back together in MCS.

Staying positive during the job search Looking for a job can be a very anxious time, especially if you have been unemployed or job searching for a while. Staying positive is easier said than done, but yet it is so very important.

Here are a few easy to follow tips helping you to stay focused, positive, and hopeful.

• Get organised Ensure that your CV is up to date and that you have draft cover letter which you can easily be tweaked to suit the roles you are applying for. Is your LinkedIn profile current? Do you have an outfit for an interview ready should you be invited at short notice? Have you thought about who you could ask to give you a reference? This is the time to focus on these job search basics.

Communicating Europe IRD Duhallow is delighted to have once again been awarded funding under the Department of Foreign Affairs Communicating Europe initiative (CEI) for voluntary organisations, educational bodies and civil society groups and bodies.

This funding enables IRD Duhallow to introduce the “The Celebrating European Citizenship project “, which seeks to work with local secondary schools in Duhallow in delivering an online workshop on what Europe means to transition year students as Irish citizens focusing on some of the following aspects: • History and how Ireland became a member; • How the EU works; • Ireland and the EU-what the EU membership means for Ireland; • To explain the results of the accession to the EU, both for society as a whole and for young people; • Being part of the EU’s Single Market and the benefits of Irish business to trade on both European and international markets; • The benefits for farmers from direct payment paid out under the CAP; • European legislation on equality in the workplace; • The opportunities available to study through Erasmus and having their Irish qualifications recognised through the EU under the European Qualifications Framework.

This online workshop, which is due to be held in October, will provide young people with the opportunity to have their views and voices heard

by Members of the European Parliament (MEP’s) who will be invited to speak to the students and respond to questions that may arise. LEADER Spotlight:Millstreet Town Park With the aid of LEADER funding and the immense support efforts by local businesses, clubs, schools, and the local lotto, Millstreet Town Park Committee was able to renovate an established and successful playground that has been in operation for over 25 years.

Alongside Denis Hickey and fellow hard working dedicated officers, IRD Duhallow Board member Geraldine O’Leary has volunteered on the Millstreet Town Park Committee since 2014.

Annually the network organize social outings including an annual summer trip, a carers mass in November, and a Christmas dinner. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Family and Voluntary Carers have faced a particularly challenging time, and the peer support among carers in a nonjudgemental therapeutic space cannot be underestimated. As part of National Carers Week, IRD Duhallow launched the Duhallow Carers Dormant Accounts Programme 2021-2022, which has a particular focus on improving employment opportunities for Carers. Why you really do have to divide perennials

Many perennial plants – those which come back year after year – spread. You plant one plant. Over two or three years, it expands, growing new corms, tubers, rhizomes, or roots under the ground, all around the original plant. These plants can start taking over your garden, choking out lesser, more delicate plants; real thugs include day lilies, iris sibirica, phlomis, geraniums, and Japanese anemone.

Dividing plants can reinvigorate old tired specimens, breathing new life into old plants and saving you money in replacing them. Don’t wait until a plant has become decrepit or monstrous to divide it.

To keep your garden looking at its best year after year, divide your perennials when they are at their peak. Watch them over the summer and divide them at the end of the season.

You can divide perennials in spring or autumn. If you do it in the summer or the winter, you’ll probably subject the plant to too much hot, dry weather or cold, wet soil. Either will stress it.

Try not to divide plants when they’re flowering, you are unlikely really to damage the plant, but you will obviously lose the flowers it is holding. Most perennials are incredibly easy going, although there are some that possibly prefer spring to autumn or vice versa;

for example, Crocosmias’ respond better to spring division.

The most important issue around timing to my mind is all about the soil. Newly divided plants need to grow new root systems in order to establish the new plant into the soil. Autumn can be a great time for this as the soil is still warm and dry from the summer, and the plant can put out new root growth before having to worry about growing new shoots. But after a cold and wet summer leading into a cold and wet winter, newly divided plants can suffer from new root growth rotting in waterlogged soils, and sitting in cold wet ground all winter can lead to the loss of the plant.

If your soil gets very wet over the winter, you might be better off waiting until the Spring to divide your plants.

To divide perennials you simply dig them up. Prepare for lots of huffing and puffing to get some of them out of the ground. And don’t worry about hurting them; you’re much more likely to hurt yourself!

General gardening advice will tell you at this stage to gently tease the roots apart.

For some plants, this is undoubtedly the technique to use, but for the vast majority you will resort to slicing, hacking, chopping, and cutting with

increasing desperation and a growing array of weaponry.

Spades, forks, axes, and knives will all be called into service.

Treat the plants as if you had just bought them. Water them well.

Check how far apart they need to be when planted. You will have plants left over after you have replanted your newly divided perennial, so pot them up, water them well, and place them in a shady spot in your garden. Instant free gifts for visiting friends and family.

Perennials to divide include plants that clump up, like ornamental grasses, Siberian irises, heleniums, phlomis, and asters.

The 2021/22 Season kicks off on the 11th of September for our Under 15 Girls and the 18th September for our U10 to U16 Boys teams. BEST OF LUCK to all the players, coaches, and management.

Our club is run by volunteers who give up their time each week; it is no different for the coming season. Please approach any club member if you can help. There are lots of ways to help from picking up the cones after training or giving up 1 hour a week to help coach a team.

Curved Horizons Art Exhibition Emerging artists showcase their talent Curved Horizons is a contemporary exhibition featuring eight artists’ work set against the dramatic backdrop of St. Peter’s Church, Cork. The exhibition runs from Saturday, August 28th to Sunday, October 3rd with the regular opening times of St. Peter’s, Cork. Admission is free.

At first glance, this group appears to have little in common. However, this diverse collection showcases emerging and established artists who invite you to step into their private worlds, each uniquely rich and compelling. Curved Horizons is a provocative and inspiring journey offering a unique experience for all art lovers, from established art collectors to those wishing to purchase their first piece.

About the artists

Mary St Leger’s work is often referred to as quirky, unsettling, religious.

She puts this down to her eccentric childhood.

Living in a house at the end of a boreen, far from civilisation, protestant deep roots of the Anglo Irish and white African heritage made a heady atmosphere of mystery, fear, and curiosity. It is this peculiar childhood and the strength and determination of the women in her family that continually influences her work.

Bríd Moynahan, a graduate of the Crawford college of Art, lives in Newmarket. She is a member of Cork Printmakers where she specialises in etching.

Her work is semiautobiographical. She is interested in slightly surreal exploration of narratives derived from personal life, fairy tales and conversations.

Born in Kerry, Tony O’Connor studied Fine Art at Crawford College of Art & Design, and is an established artist in Cork and nationally. Presently, Tony can be found working at his Cork-based White Tree Studio. With a disciplined approach in his study of horse anatomy, Tony puts a great emphasis on technical execution.

Julianne Guinee’s artwork engages with themes of transformation, motherhood, loss, and isolation. She is naturally drawn to the imagery and complexities of the human form, particularly the female figure. Paintings show romantic figures draped in silks, reflecting a multiplicity of attitudes in each canvas.

Jessica Baron is originally from Canada and lives in Ballydesmond. Jessica’s work is inspired by some fundamentals of impressionism. Her open compositions attempt an accurate depiction of the landscape, the light in its changing qualities.

The passage of time and weather changes influence the tone in her colourful oil paintings.

Claire O’Keeffe is based in Newmarket and predominantly worked with collage. Claire began to explore embroidery at the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown.

She began to take refuge in a medium that offered her complete freedom of expression and opened up a vast potential for exploration.

Themes such as identity and vulnerability echo throughout the work.

Orla Hickey feels inspired by her surroundings. She celebrates in the details of streets, adding layers of colour to draw the eye to the beauty in the everyday. Orla produces colourful prints of her drawings and creates vibrant abstract paintings.

These drawings are a contemporary take on Irish streetscapes and iconic Irish buildings.

We jump back to 2013 and pictured here was Minister Jimmy Denihan officially opening Millstreet Astro Turf Pitch, with councillor Noel Buckley, Deputy Aine Collins, Cllr Gerard Murphy and Maura Walsh and Helen O'Sullivan, IRD Duhallow. They were joined by some of the towns locals, both young and old. In the subsequent years, Millstreet continues to make use of this wonderful amenity.

Too Much Iron In Your Blood

Ireland has one of the world’s highest rates of haemochromatosis.

Haemochromatosis is a genetically inherited condition where iron levels in the body slowly build up over many years. This build-up of iron is stored in the liver, heart, and other organs, and can lead to very serious health problems.

The symptoms of too much iron are very similar to the symptoms of iron deficiency; fatigue, weakness, restless legs, and heavy periods, plus it can make you forgetful and have a low mood.

Because the symptoms are so similar, it is very important that you get your blood tested by your doctor before taking iron supplements.

Vegetarians and vegans can find that they don’t get enough iron in their diets and may benefit from taking a supplement. People who do a lot of physical exercise can also find that they need more iron, because iron carries oxygen around the body.

A great general tonic designed to combat tiredness and fatigue is Floradix liquid iron and vitamins.

to the diet and a good pick-meup. For people with very low iron levels, NaturesPlus Hema-Plex is a good supplement. It’s easily absorbed and contains additional vitamins to further boost the health of the blood.

Struggling To Find The New Normal Is Okay

It would be fair to say that this past year and a half has been different - difficult even.

It would also be fair to say that it has taken its toll on all our mental health. You only need to watch the news or read a paper to find a mention of an impending mental health crisis since March 2020.

However, we need to be aware that we are not talking ourselves into this crisis. Focusing on our mental health and searching for problems does not cause us to see things that are not there.

Sometimes what we see on the news and what we read in the paper can feed our fears and sensationalise what are normal human emotions.

We have experienced loss in the past 18 months; loss of our jobs,

our social life as we knew it, and saddest of all, we have lost loved ones. We have felt loneliness and isolation the likes of which most of us have never experienced.

We have faced long empty days without seeing another human being.

We must not forget about our resilience, our grit, and our determination that got us through these times. This resilience does not mean that we did not struggle; it means that we cope with that

struggle. This resilience will also get us through our anxieties at re-entering our social lives post pandemic.

Maybe you feel that your feelings are difficult for you to navigate, that you struggle to find the person that you were, and that you could do with some extra help. Please get that help. Visit your GP who will refer you to the local mental health services if you need it. However, it is not unusual to feel sad, to feel nervous, and to feel exhausted from the past few months. It is normal to need time to shake it off and face into our new normal.

Why the weekends count Friday to Sunday makes up 42% of your week. That’s right. Nearly half of your week is made up of the weekend. How would you rate your eating habits over the weekend?

Are you someone who remains consistent over the weekend with a few indulgences enjoyed here and there? Or does Friday at 11am signal the start of your weekend and it turns into a downward spiral of over-consuming high calorie foods until Sunday night when guilt

kicks in? For many clients I work with, the weekend is the first thing we look at when trying to create a healthier lifestyle and lose body fat.

To develop a more balanced mindset towards the weekend, you first need to look at your weekday eating habits. Are you depriving yourself Monday – Thursday to then overindulge all weekend before the diet starts again Monday? This mindset does not work and will not lead to any results in the long term.

Do you create a plan for yourself at the weekend? Plan in some activity with friends and have food in the house to make sure you make nutritious food choices. An empty fridge on a Friday night is nearly an invite to call your local

Find the balance

After a glorious and stuttered Summer, the days are getting shorter. The nights creep in faster and faster and that winter chill has started crackling in the air. The end of summer doesn’t truly roll around until the 22nd of September, the Autumn Equinox or Cónacht Fómhair. Like the Spring Equinox, it’s a day with equal hours of light and darkness. It once called for the end of harvest and the beginning of winter preparation, the end of the bright half of the year, and a

time to reflect on the good and bad from the year so far.

While the festivals and rituals of Druidic Ireland are not practiced today, the spirit of the Equinox can still be important. It’s seen as a good time to start projects, and to seek harmony and balance in life.

Much like a more well known spot, Newgrange, the Autumn Equinox has a home with the Hill of the Crone in Meath. In the morning of the equinox, the art of the back stone of the cairn and the

central chamber are illuminated by sunlight. It was built somewhere between 2000 and 3000bc, and still welcomes visitors to admire the art of those long gone.

This year, the estimated time of equanimity of light and dark is 8:21pm. In that moment of balance, take the time to reflect on the balance of light and dark in life. Remember that while the days get darker, the light in our lives can burn on, illuminated always by ourselves and by those around us.

Excessive Drinking in Dogs & Cats

One of the questions your vet will probably ask you at every veterinary appointment, regardless of the issue at hand, will most like be “Is Fluffy eating and drinking normally?”. Although a change from normal eating habits might be easy for us to notice as pet owners (a full or half bowl regularly left behind after a meal means that there might be a fairly obvious issue with his/her appetite), a change in drinking habits is a harder one to pin down.

Most pet owners might perceive a pet drinking water more than usual as a good sign – after all, we need fresh water to stay well hydrated

and healthy, however excessive drinking can actually be an early warning sign for a number of serious health concerns.

It is important to bear in mind that a pet’s drinking habits may change if their food has recently changed; pets eating wet food (cans or pouches) may be receiving some of their hydration from the moisture in their food, and hence drink slightly less than a pet who predominantly eats dry nuts/kibble. As a rough guide, dogs and cats should normally drink approximately 50-100mls per kg bodyweight per day. If you are uncertain if your pet’s drinking habits are normal, you can check their water intake by measuring how much water you fill into their water bowl in a day with a

measuring jug, and subtracting the remainder left that night to find out total amount of water drank that day.

Recognising excessive drinking and reporting it to your vet can ensure that serious diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, and hormonal diseases are diagnosed and appropriately treated early on, meaning that your pet has the best chance of remaining happy and well in the longer term.

IRD Duhallow Local Training Initiative Level 4 Horticulture IRD Duhallow in conjunction with Cork ETB are offering a full time QQI Level 4 Major Award in Horticulture starting in September. It is a free 44week full time programme where participants will gain the skills necessary to grow their own produce, learn landscaping techniques and perhaps go onto further training, set up a business or gain employment. This training will take place in the grounds of the James O’ Keeffe Institute, Newmarket which offers outstanding facilities to students, including a 60ft training polytunnel, a well-established kitchen garden and individual allotment plots. On full completion of the course, participants will receive QQI level 4 Major award in Horticulture. This programme is aimed at individuals in receipt of a social welfare payment.

A Right Nuisance A dead body and a group of individuals trying to get rid of it has never lead to more confusion and humour than in Alfred Hitchcock’s underrated black comedy masterpiece The Trouble With Harry (1955).

In Europe, death can be seen as funny. In America, it is not necessarily the case. The term ‘gallows humour’- deriving humour in a morbid situation- is a common one. It’s said that at his public execution, the English murderer William Palmer looked at the trapdoor on the gallows and asked the hangman, “Are you sure it’s safe?”. Hitchcock understood that humour could be derived from ghoulish and macabre scenarios, which he explored throughout his career, and this can really be seen in his vastly underrated black

comedy The Trouble With Harry.

It follows the discovery of a dead man, Harry Worp, by four individuals at separate times who each think they are responsible for his death, leading them to team up and bury Harry only for the situation to get more complicated.

The script by John Michael Hayes is right on the money. It’s such a fine line to balance death and comedy, but here it’s done so seamlessly. The cast is fantastic - John Forsythe (of Dynasty fame and the voice of Charlie in Charlie’s Angels), Edmund Gwenn,

Mildred Natwick, and making her big screen debut, Shirley MacLaine. Shot in glorious Vista Vision (basically the 1950s version of IMAX), it looks gorgeous, and the movie marks the first of many collaborations Hitchcock had with Bernard Herrmann, my favourite music composer of all time.

Herrmann’s score is lush, moody, and funny all at the same time.

Harry wasn’t a commercial hit in America but seemed to thrive in Europe, reiterating my point earlier.

Many since have followed his lead, such as American filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and John Landis, but as always, the master did it first.
