DCFS Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Through the years, they’ve provided for the community through snow, rain, and shine. From the beginning of the pandemic, they adapted and continued providing an invaluable service.

Over the years, they’ve gained vehicles, clients, and seven routes that take them to hundreds of customers every week. We take a look back at the successes of DCFS since their inception, from humble beginnings to a backbone within the community.

Running Up That Hill

Brian Buckley from Cork is one of Ireland’s leading ultra trail runners and a New Leaf Brand Ambassador.

Brian ran his first short trail race in 2015 and was blown away by the buzz and adrenaline rush of the first technical downhill. He was hooked, and progressed to longer races and ultras in the years since. Trail running is a huge part of his life, having introduced him to some spectacular places and wonderful people. Brian's won the Kerry Way Ultra 200km in 2019, Ireland's longest & toughest ultra race.

“It was an incredible feeling coming through Muckross knowing I had the race in the bag. It was a long battle through the night with Sean who was leading and eventually finished

2nd. After taking the lead with 30k to go, a kind of fear crept in that something wrong might happen, but I held on for the win and was over the moon.”

Brian knows how to dig deep when the going gets tough. He focuses on the hard training and hours invested over the previous months that are wasted if you throw in the towel. His favourite quote is by John McDonnell; “Be all in or all out” basically give your all.

On the Donkey’s back

Liscarroll Donkey Sanctuary has opened its doors to the public for the first time since March 2020. Like many places, for the bulk of the pandemic, they’ve been closed to the public. They’ve continued their important work behind the scenes, and since July 1st, they have welcomed visitors

back with new guidelines in place.

Throughout the pandemic, they have been sharing advice, videos, and pictures of their ongoing work.

For July and August, the sanctuary will open Thursday and Friday every week, and visitors will be required to book a ticket for either a morning or afternoon slot. The numbers are limited to ensure the safety of visitors

and staff and time slots are limited to three hours. So far, their openings have been a huge success, and the slots are filling fast!

The tickets are free and as a charity, they are welcoming donations.

LEADER in the community Spotlight on… Freemount Foroige Room Refurbishment Club- “A dream come true”

The LEADER programme 20142020 saw the refurbishment of the Freemount Foroige Room. Shining a light on rural youth, we are pleased to introduce our readers to this project.

their own area to hold equipment and to provide a safe space for the youth of rural Freemount to call their own.

The room consists of two areas; a games area with TV, music system, pool table, couches, and bean bags, and a space with a modern kitchen and furnishings.

Freemount Community Development Association were delighted to complete the Youth centre at the community centre during 2020. According to committee “the project was a dream come true as it refurbished an area of the hall which was unused over the past 15 years or so, and in doing so provided a large modern space, primarily for our youth”.

As with most community centres during the onset of COVID 19, they had to reinvent themselves.

Freemount Community Centre was no different in that the playschool needed extra room to accommodate social distancing and dropping off and collecting protocol. In lieu of that, the afterschool’s facility vacated their area and were delighted to take up residence in the new room for the duration of COVID 19, while the The Freemount Foroige, a vibrant schools were open. The timing of and popular group, greatly needed the project was perfect.

Unfortunately, the Foroige Club could not meet regularly during the various lockdowns and restrictions, but are very much looking forward to making the very best use from the space in 2021 and in the future. It provides our teenagers with a safe fun social area to meet, where they undertake various courses, talks, games nights, and sporting events which after the past 16 months, is very much needed.

#SICAP stories - “When I Was Knee High”: Preserving local memories

Referring to 2020, Triona Dennehy, IRD Duhallow’s Employment, Training and Social Inclusion Coordinator notes that “people have felt isolated from each other as the range of measures introduced to slow down the spread of Covid-19 caused unprecedented disruption to recreational, sporting, and cultural activities as well as religious gatherings. It called for never-before-seen levels of adaptability and

resilience among individuals and communities”.

The cost of printing and publishing the book “When I Was About Knee High- A Book of Memories” was proudly funded under the SICAP programme supporting the Castlemagner Community Development Association with this unique project, combating isolation amongst the most vulnerable.

In his foreword, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh highlights: “One of the unavoidable effects of the public health measures was to increase the risk of isolation among the old and vulnerable members of our society. The Castlemagner Community Development Association was aware of this increased isolation and was inspired into action.

down recollections of their youth and to submit these memories of days gone by. The response received was magnificent and all submissions found their way into this wonderful book.”

It strives to shine a light on the unique memories of the locality which may die out or fade away if not retained in book form or on paper. It looks at the traditions of rural Irish life as recalled by older members of the community, some of which may be virtually unrecognisable to modern generations of people and future generations yet to come showcasing the innate rich identity of the community of Castlemagner.

This is an important piece of work for the locality, helping retain information about the area that otherwise could be lost to the passage of time.

“That’s A Wrap”

Post offices always seem to be at risk. As far back as 1991, archives of radio news and discussions can be found on the validity of post offices, and it’s the rural ones that are always most affected. In 2018, the announcement of 160 post offices being closed across 25 counties shook the countryside and as members of rural communities saw the resources dribble away, there was a sense of despair.

Post office’s funds are determined by the business done on the premises; everything from stamp sales to social welfare payments add

up the points that determine the funding. Naturally, in smaller areas, this business is lower, but it is no less important to the community.

But this is rarely, if ever, taken into account.

An exit package was offered, and the difficulties faced by postmasters at the time made this seem like the perfect option. For many, it was the only option. Some stayed, most often those in smaller areas with a further trek to the next office, and that is true for John Paddy Joe Murphy of Kiskeam.

For over 60 years, he’s worked with the Kiskeam post office and he’s seen changes many have only heard of. He remembers the hand done work to the change over to the digital age, but this change over did not affect the sense of community. “The people were lovely, outstanding,” he said. In these areas, the post office is more than just errands; for many, it’s a social event, a ritual of the week. There’s great friendship in it, though it is of course not without its excitement.

In 2007, the small post office appeared in the news when it was held up by a 19 year old from Ballincollig. With some colourful language, he screamed it was a robbery, and as John complied with the order to hand over the money, the robber placed the gun on the

He grabbed the gun and the young man fled with the cash. He was later caught and the money returned.

“And after all that, it was only an imitation revolver,” John laughed.

On the 31st of July, John is “handing in his gun”. Kiskeam post office will close its doors for the last time, coincidentally the same day as Banteer’s post office. At 86, it’s time to retire from it, but with no one to carry on, it will mean customers have to find somewhere else to do their business. As sad as it is to see the end of it, John says he’s thankful for it.

DUHALLOW FARMING FOR BLUE DOT CATCHMENTS EIP UPDATE - JULY 2021

The Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP is a resultsbased agri-environmental scheme that works alongside Duhallow farmers to improve water quality and biodiversity on the Rivers Allow, Dalua and Owenanare

Owentaraglin EIP We are currently in our third year of our Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP project and are enjoying considerable success in improving water quality and biodiversity on the Allow, Dalua and Owenanare Rivers. Earlier in the year the government announced an open call for new EIP projects. This round of funding aimed to develop a number of smaller short-term projects rather than one large, long-term EIP project.

IRD Duhallow applied for a project that would allow us to include the Owentaraglin River in our work.

In May we found out that we were one of 24 successful applications

and we received €198,000 in funding for a one-year project. The Owentaraglin EIP will commence in January 2022 and will seek to work alongside farmers on the Owentaraglin to improve water quality and biodiversity on this important river.

The project team will largely focus on implementing green infrastructure measures such as farm roadway upgrades, alternative drinking points and settlement/biodiversity ponds that will allow the short-term project to have a long-time impact on the river, mutually benefitting our environment and our farming community here in Duhallow. Participating farmers will also have the option to include habitat retention measures on their farms such as riparian woodland establishment or wet grassland retention. Much of the Owentaraglin is in good status but parts of the river are at risk of not achieving good quality status in the next cycle of the Water Framework

Directive. We expect that the actions taken in this EIP project will have a significant impact on maintaining and improving the quality of the river.

Farmer Water Biodiversity The first of this year’s farmer training events took place on May 27th. Participating farmers are required to attend at least one training event but may attend as many as desired. Due to Covid-19 guidelines, this event was held outdoors with a limit of 15 project farmers randomly selected to attend. Attendees received water biodiversity training which involved learning about the different aquatic macroinvertebrates that live in our streams and their significance in water quality analysis.

Aquatic macroinvertebrates are spineless organisms that live in freshwater ecosystems for at least part of their lifecycle and are large enough to be seen with the naked eye. Different types of aquatic macroinvertebrates have varying levels of pollution

sensitivity. Therefore, some can live in highly polluted waters, whilst others can tolerate very little to no pollution. As a result, by examining populations of macroinvertebrates in a stretch of river, we can estimate the quality of the water by noting the numbers of pollution tolerant species compared to pollution sensitive species.

During this training event, participating farmers were shown live samples of the main groups of pollution sensitive and tolerant macroinvertebrates and were given a demonstration of how such creatures are collected using a method known as kick sampling.

At the end of the event, attendees were given recording sheets that they could use to sample water as citizen scientists on their own farms.

However, more water biodiversity training events are set to be carried out later in the summer, along with a farm safety event and a riverbank stabilization event, the dates of which will be confirmed in the near future.

Duhallow News DUHALLOW OLYMPIANS

Following a virtual meeting on Thursday 8th July, TD Michael Moynihan posted some good news regarding the Kanturk Courthouse.

The meeting brought “huge insight from the locality, the community, and indeed historians”, said Mr. Moynihan.

He also said he’s ‘delighted that the court services have instructed the OPW(Office of Public Works) to do some work on the roof of the jail at the back of the courthouse’. This is a triumphant first step, and there is hope that it is indeed only the first towards the preservation of the entire building.

Congratulations again to the Duhallow athletes representing Ireland in the Olympics.

CASTLEMAGNER NOTES Commemoration Grant Scheme 2021 Castlamagner Community Development Association was delighted to be successful in their funding application for two information boards for Cecilstown Village. The boards will give a brief history of Lohort Castle, commemorating this formative period in our local and national history. Later this year a celebration will be planned to formally unveil the boards.

Traffic Calming in Castlemagner Speed warning signs have been installed in Castlemagner to advise motorists of their speed. These, in conjunction with the speed ramps will help to keep everyone safe. Our thanks to local representatives and to Cork County Council for their work in securing funding for the traffic calming measures.

Preparations for the Olympics There is huge excitement and pride in having not one, but two Olympians from the parish! Everyone wishes Shane Sweetnam and Michelle Finn the best of luck as they prepare to represent Ireland in the Tokyo Olympics. In honour of their achievement, Castlemagner and Cecilstown will be decorated to celebrate. Work has already begun in getting the villages clean and tidy with kerbs and footpaths swept and weeded. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers for their time and work.

The Duhallow Community Food Service celebrates their 25 year anniversary this year, and in that quarter century, their rise has been meteoric.

It all started in 1996. They identified the need for a meal service, and IRD Duhallow stepped forward to fill the gap.

In the early years, DCFS was assisted by public health nurses and community groups in identifying those who would best benefit from the service.

Less than 500 meals were being provided per month, and only one route was available for delivery.

There are obvious benefits to such a range of services, but there are other just as important benefits. It brings a sense of independence, and for many, there’s a social aspect, and for some, it may be their only daily social interaction.

Prior to the pandemic, the community dining hall in particular saw groups visiting as part of day trips, but also people who joined regularly for their lunch and catch up. Not only that, a seasonal menu is provided at Christmas, and they cater a festive party of sorts complete with service.

During times of particularly harsh weather conditions, deliveries never dropped, and instead, this was used as an opportunity to ensure that essentials were brought to people who could not otherwise access them.

However, in 2021, with seven delivery routes, a whole host of new additional services, and a specialised food center, over three thousand meals are delivered every month. But how did we get here?

With each year’s growing demand, more localities requested the service. The core idea was never turning a client away, but funding such a project is difficult. In 2003, in an effort to cross subsidise the meal service, home baking

25th Anniversary

The Covid 19 pandemic saw a change to lifestyles across the board, but where DCFS is concerned, many of their regular attendees were now cocooning.

Extra routes were added to help those confined by travel restrictions, but this also brought a small break from isolation for many. Those who lived far from family, too far to visit, this was their only social interaction. The staff across all areas of DCFS joined together to work with the Meals on Wheels. The group was split into two who worked different halves of the week so as not to interact, thus ensuring the service could continue as efficiently as possible but also as safely as possible. Sanitisation protocols were increased, and no contact delivery became the standard. In addition to meals, they brought that same energy from harsh weather, and essentials - milk, bread, tea, papers, post, etc. - was delivered.

Life behind a lens Interview by Tadhg Curtin

When told “George said your fancy camera does all the work!”, Eddie laughed. “It does! He’s trying to wind me up!”

Award winning photographer Eddie Hennessy, currently residing in Newmarket, had a surprising introduction to the art: “I got a stroke about 12 years ago and part of my recovery was based around cycling, and I never realised how beautiful Ireland was. So I decided to get a camera and photograph it, and I fell in love with how hard it actually is to take pictures and the learning process of it.

I was actually sick ten years before my stroke. I was a full time athlete in Judo. I was training to go to the Olympics, and I gradually got more sick.

The doctors didn’t know what was wrong with me. The more I trained, the less fit I got, and I

knew something was wrong so when I had my stroke ten years later, I discovered it was heart disease that caused the stroke. After recovering, I now have 70% function back in the

right hand side of my body.

My favourite part of the job is capturing people’s moments. The aspect I don’t like about what I do is that my disability doesn’t allow me to do certain things. My thought process is different to able bodied people, and to get to the final goal is harder for me but in competing with fellow photographers, I can still get there.”

His advice to anyone taking up photography? “Don’t get too caught up in the expensive gear. Learn the trade. Learn about lights and how your camera works before you invest in the equipment.”

“I changed my business to some product photography and I am concentrating on sales. Covid was a great time for learning things. With photography, you never stop learning. If you put time into learning about something, you get amazing results.”

Eddie’s is sought after more than ever - “I’m actually booked up until 2023! Apart from that, I campaign for disabled entrepreneurs. A lot of disabled people don’t know they can be business owners because no one tells them. I’m involved in a business course for Disabled people in Technological University Dublin as an entrepreneur in residence ” With no stopping him, Eddie has true grit and inspires all of us to get back up when life knocks us down.

•Scrolling through social media is like scrolling through other people’s lives, reminding you of all the things you don’t have, the holidays you are not on, the meals you are not eating. Scroll through your own mind instead, see what you have to be grateful for and focus on the life you have.

•You don’t always have to be positive. You won’t stop the rain by telling it to stop, but it never rains forever and getting wet is not so bad. It is easier to be soaked and happy than exhausted from trying to stop the rain.

•Beware of ‘because.’ You are not important because you are rich, because you are thin, because you have a big house. You are important, there is no because.

•Self-forgiveness is vital. It will change your world and your view of the world. You will never

Consistency Over Perfection

When it comes to making a change in our habits, we often aim for perfection. We go from no exercise to exercising five days a week. We go from one bar of chocolate a day to removing all chocolate from our diet. Sound familiar?

When it comes to creating a healthy habit, starting small and building on that has been proven to be the best way to build a habit for the long term.

If you want to start exercising, start by going for a 20-minute walk 3 times a week. Carve out that time across the week and make it a habit. People will say to me – sure a walk is no good to me! But do those 20 minutes consistently for a few weeks.

As that becomes a habit for you, you can then start to lengthen the walk or maybe add in some extra

walks. Do that for a few weeks and then maybe replace a walk with an exercise class. Before you know it, you will be exercising regularly and you may not have even noticed it happen.

Starting small and building on the habit will set you up for success.

If you aim for five days in the gym after no exercise for a year, you will be tired, sore and cranky and the likelihood is you won’t return to the gym for another year!

Living a healthier lifestyle does not have to be a life overhaul. The key is to start small and create healthy

Croagh Patrick : Irelands Holy Mountain

Considered to be Ireland’s holiest mountain, Croagh Patrick is renowned for its Pilgrimage in honour of St Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint.

Stretching back 5000 years from the Stone Age to the present day, the pilgrimage would normally take place on the last Sunday of July.

Known as Reek Sunday, it attracts over 25,000 pilgrims each year.

It originally began in pagan times when people gathered here to celebrate the beginning of the Harvest Season.

It was on this summit that Saint Patrick fasted for forty days in 441 AD and built a church. During an archaeological excavation on the summit in 1995, the foundation of a stone oratory dating back to between 430 and 890 AD was unearthed. The present church was built in the early 1900s.

The climb itself is difficult and presents a challenge to all who venture; it takes about four

hours from the base to the summit and back to base again. It is 764 meters in height and 7 kilometres long. It is located 12 miles from Westport.

Pilgrims take on this challenge each year for their own personal reasons. The climb was cancelled last year due to Covid 19 but will go ahead this year. For this year only, the Reek Pilgrimage is to be extended. Each week throughout the month of July, the pilgrimage programme will be held each Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Sacrament of Confession will be available at the

summit at 11am with Mass at 12 noon. Saturday’s Mass, will be celebrated at 10 am with Confession at 11am.

This year, a special extension has been allowed whereby your indulgence may be gained for climbing the mountain up to the end of September.

So come on, what are you waiting for? Choose a beautiful fine day and you will not be disappointed. The views from the summit looking out on Clew Bay will be your reward for climbing this holy mountain as you follow a path where many have gone before you.

Rip currents are channels of murky or green water usually in a break in the waves. They can also be spotted by a line of foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily seaward. They can easily pull you out to sea, but there are ways to escape.

Do not swim against the current.

Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current, then swim diagonally towards the shore.

Scooting & what it means

Has your dog been scooting recently?

As a vet, at least once a day, I will need to discuss the somewhat awkward subject of Anal Glands with a client. ‘You see he’s dragging his bottom along the floor for the past few days’, the client will say.

They’ll usually shift nervously, before continuing “I’m worried about his….erm …you know….

Bottom glands”. Talking about Anal glands is nothing to be embarrassed about, and I can guarantee you, your vet will regularly see infection or impaction (overfilling) of these pesky little scent glands at the clinic.

Dogs have two scent glands on either side of their bottom, hidden at about the four and eight o’clock marks. These glands usually fill with fishy smelling fluid, and will empty

GP Vet & Consultant Veterinary Cardiologist regularly when your dog passes a normal poo. This keeps the fluid normal, and the glands reasonably empty and comfortable for your pet. If these glands stop emptying normally, or the contents of the glands have become infected with bacteria, the glands may enlarge and become uncomfortable for your pet, resulting in them dragging their bottom along the floor, a practice called ‘Scooting’.

As scooting generally indicates discomfort on the part of your pet, a visit to the vet is in order so that the glands can be examined and emptied by a professional.

We will also be able to assess if other issues are at play, such as a tapeworm infection; an intestinal parasite with can cause bottom

itching similar to that seen with anal gland problems.

Depending on what your vet finds, the management plan may entail changes such as increasing fibre in the diet to firm up the poos so that they are more efficient at gland emptying as they exit, or even measures such as antibiotics or more regular gland checks with your vet ongoing. If you see a scoot, don’t hesitate to visit your vet for help!

Interview with Kate Sandham of Gloundine Studio

After years in a corporate space, a life coaching diploma really helped me to reconnect with myself, and start to explore the world of creation and visual arts!

Now,I’m a self-taught mixed media and encaustic artist.

I love being surrounded by trees, colour, movement, sound, smells.

I bring home things that have triggered an idea, and do my best to put the moment in my “Inspiration Bank”.Maybe even take a quick picture! Usually it happens when I’m so busy taking things in that my mind has a chance to join the dots! Creativity isn’t likely to happen when you’re stuck in your head!

My taste in art is varied and I don’t have any favourites! I see “art” everywhere but one of the artists that I’m influenced by is Fran Halpin - Fran creates art that you feel like you could step or jump into, it’s amazing, very calming!

That’s what I like to focus on rather than specific styles or techniques - their energy. Artists put their souls out there, and seeing it is like your two souls, hearts, energy, all connecting - how magical and special is that?

I am so proud of my “Autumn” series of encaustic pieces. I just love making them. These paintings remind me of those warm evenings in August and into September where things are lovely and lazy and the countryside is golden!

Recently, I made the decision to take a break from my full-time role for a number of reasons, one of which was to give myself the space to explore my creative Issue 45 23 July 2021

Kate finds inspiration in nature. potential! Yes, it’s scary, but I’m exploring the possibility of turning something that I am passionate about into an income stream. That brings a little bit of risk, financially mostly, especially in the uncertain times we’re in! I don’t want to start thinking of creating as something that I have to do. But I’m really excited about what this break and exploration will bring to my life.

Some people have said to me “I wish I was creative” and it makes me really sad. We’re born with the amazing gift of imagination and creativity.

As we grow, we learn that there is a ‘right’ way to do certain things.

We are taught to always colour inside the lines. Yes, there is value in a lot of that! What do we lose though? It’s really tricky for some of us as adults to unpick all of that - it’s really difficult for us to get messy, ‘play’ with paint, have a go and be proud that we tried!

I rely on my intuition and I can only tune in when I have mental space to ‘listen’ 2) Find a community; the support I’ve received from different groups online and close friends has been amazing. Even from people I barely know.

3) Balance out your support; it may not always come from the creative world. It may be a business group, a spiritual group, exercise group, you just never know!

4) Validate your feedback Especially if you find yourself stumbling over feedback (unsolicited or otherwise). Look at who is delivering the feedback, what role their opinion/feedback plays, and work out then if there are elements that can be beneficial to incorporate.

IRD Duhallow Local Training Initiative Level 4 Horticulture

IRD Duhallow in conjunction with Cork ETB are offering a full time QQI Level 4 Major Award in Horticulture starting in September. It is a free 44-week full time programme where participants will gain the skills necessary to grow their own produce, learn landscaping techniques and perhaps go onto further training, set up a business or gain employment. This training will take place in the grounds of the James O’ Keeffe Institute, Newmarket which offers outstanding facilities to students, including a 60ft training polytunnel, a well-established kitchen garden and individual allotment plots. On full completion of the course, participants will receive QQI level 4 Major award in Horticulture. This programme is aimed at individuals in receipt of a social welfare payment.

For some the times they are a-changin’, for others they may be ending in Quentin Tarantino’s magnificent love letter to a bygone era, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) Last issue we looked at a movie made in 1969, this time I’m writing about a movie set in 1969.

It follows faded western star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) contemplating their future in a changing industry, represented by Dalton’s hip neighbours, Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski.

Dalton represents countless actors and actresses whose career remained on the small screen in shows like The Virginian, Tombstone Territory, etc (shows

myself and my father were bonding over during the lockdown).

Tarantino wants to pay respect to these people and it’s fantastic. He revels in showing this milieu.

This was one of my favourite movies of 2019. The initial dread of that first viewing knowing the fate of Tate and the others with her on that fateful night created an unbearable tension, but on second viewing, it becomes more of a hangout movie. We watch characters with time on their hands, us knowing of course, that time may be running out. But then, the film and real-life history begins to deviate from one another...

It’s a movie that’s funny and poignant in equal measure, but also has a jaw dropping act of violence towards the end that will have you shrieking and laughing simultaneously. If you can get past it, it’s a rewarding experience. I

was thoroughly knocked out by its ending though. It really has stayed with me, showing how bittersweet life can be. Offering up opportunities or swiftly cutting things short. Nobody knows how great or cruel things will be but if we’re all like Rick in real life, here’s hoping we’ll have a friend like Cliff along the way.
