Gardening tips by Rachel Budd, Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Community Garden

Think ahead to winter We’ve been having some pretty interesting weather lately, to put it mildly! The potatoes are drowning in waterlogged soil whilst apples and plums are being battered and blown off the trees before they are even ripe. It is a difficult end to a trying gardening season.

We are on a salvage mission really to save what we can before autumn really sets in. If it is difficult for gardeners at this time, spare a thought for farmers, who stand to lose a large part of their crops if conditions don’t improve. This not only impacts their livelihoods but leads to shortages in the shops or price increases on staple products.

Although the pandemic crisis has been occupying our thoughts so much in recent months we mustn’t lose sight of other issues regarding food security, sustainability and climate change.

Although it can be hard to look ahead to new crops while the conditions are so bad, now is the time to think about overwintering crops. Some of these might be in the ground already, such as kale, cabbages, sprouting broccolis and leeks. Others you might be planting out over the next couple of months.

It’s time to plant overwintering crops such as kale, cabbages and leeks however the very strong winds we have been experiencing can loosen their roots and cause them to fall. Staking them for the winter months might be necessary, especially for Brussels sprouts that can get very tall.

Carrots can be left in the ground as long as they are protected from carrot fly and will withstand a degree of wet and cold. Frost will soften them though, so lift and store them before it gets very cold.

sweeter after a frost, and will also withstand wet soil up to a point, so leave them as long as possible.

Garlic really benefits from autumn planting. The cold of the winter months ensures good bulb formation for the following season.

Early varieties of onions such as Radar are also good to plant in September. They will withstand cold and frost and ripen a month earlier than spring planted ones.

Although the cold of winter is no problem for onions and garlic, both of these crops really suffer from waterlogged soil. If you have raised beds that will keep above the worst of the water then they will grow away fine, but if you know that your beds hold water in the winter months you might be best holding off until March. Alternatively, a few good sized buckets filled with good compost could yield you a nice crop of garlic. If you have a tunnel you could plant some under cover, but remember that they will be in the ground until July so might take up space you would be wanting in the spring.

Organic onion sets and garlic bulbs will be available very soon from garden centres and online retailers such as Fruit Hill Farms.

Cork IRD Duhallow is a Local Development Company that provides communities, individuals and businesses in North Cork/East Kerry with a broad range of supports and is recruiting Ecologist for a fixed term 12 months contract to lead out, validate and assess the implementation of the environment elements of our Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP as well as supporting communities through our Community Biodiversity Programme.

Job Description Reporting to the Project Manager, the role of the Ecologist will be to perform or supervise monitoring works, collect data and establish baselines to inform progress throughout the duration of the project to ensure consistency in work and assessments. The person will be required to work with GIS maps and also to coordinate and update information on the project website. The Ecologist will work closely with our Farm Planner and landowners and stakeholders and also give/assist with workshops, presentations and educational lectures in relation to all aspects of the projects and provide reports to IRD Duhallow’s Working Groups and Communities.

Big accolade for top medical expert Elizabeth Weathers, originally from Banteer, is being inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in October. She is the first UCC Alumni and only one of five people in total in Ireland to be given this honour.

Fellows are selected based on their contributions to advance the public’s health and membership of the Academy is a significant milestone in a nurse leader’s career. Out of hundreds of applications each year only a small number are accepted. She is being recognised for the following: n She is the Founding President of the first Sigma Theta Tau International chapter in Ireland.

Try relay scores €6,000

By LISA MATASSA Kanturk RFC has made history by completing the Longest Try Relay fundraiser recently. A total of 115 people took part – aged from three years old to those in their late 60s, reflecting the strong sense of community spirit that was evident throughout the two-day event.

Thanks to the great efforts of everyone who got involved and those who supported it, the fundraiser overachieved on its target, raising in excess of €6,000 for three great causes – Kanturk Community Hospital, Mercy House Support Group and Kanturk RFC. The event kicked off at 12 noon on Friday, August 21st and continued right through the night and into the next day, finishing at 4pm on Saturday, August 22nd.

Participants collectively ran the distance from Kanturk Rugby Football Club to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin by completing 759 laps of the pitch, equating to a total of 253km. Covid restrictions and heavy intermittent downpours (especially during the wee hours) didn’t dampen the efforts of those who came from the length and breadth of Duhallow to play their part.

AIR AMBUL Vital medical emergency service needs our support On the 30th of July, Ireland's first community funded Air Ambulance celebrated its first 12 months in operation. In that time, the Irish Community Air Ambulance, part of the Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) charity, has been tasked to 520 emergency medical incidents in rural and urban locations across Munster, Leinster and Connaught.

Tasked by the National Ambulance Service, the team responds to the most serious emergencies, where time can make the difference between life and death. The most common call outs include cardiac arrest, road traffic collisions, fall from height, equestrian incidents, farming related injuries and stroke.

Flying at speeds of up to 260km/hr, the Air Ambulance can bring an advanced paramedic to the side of a patient anywhere in Munster within 30 minutes.

“The Air Ambulance landed 50 feet from the house within ten minutes of my first call to 999. It was such a relief to see it landing. You can imagine, in that time of panic and pain, a quick response was crucial.

Liam was stabilised, his pain was managed, and he was seen in the Emergency Department well within an hour of his fall. Normally the journey alone to the hospital by road takes over an hour,” recounts Siobhan Kelleher, wife of the Air Ambulance's first patient, Liam, who went on to make a full recovery.

“The Air Ambulance crew made a terrible situation so much better.

I could not praise or thank them enough. It's a badly needed service

and we feel so lucky it was here when we needed it.”

Based out of Rathcoole in North Cork, the charity works in partnership with the National Ambulance Service.

The Advanced Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians on the helicopter are staff of the National Ambulance Service. The charity then covers the cost of the helicopter, fuel, maintenance, and all associated running costs.

“We would like to sincerely thank all our friends and supporters who have worked hard to help us launch our Air Ambulance one year ago. These past 12 months have proved that the Air Ambulance is a vital service and the community has really gotten behind us. People know that they could need the Air Ambulance at any time, and our mission is to be there for them in those times of need,” says John Finnegan, Chairman of ICRR’s Board of Directors.

He also highlighted the partnership with the National Ambulance Service (NAS) as being a key component in the Air Ambulance's operation: “We are proud of our strong relationship with NAS, which has ensured the highest levels of advanced paramedic care is in our helicopter, leading our team.”

Fundraising and sustainability are key for the charity.

The charity recently received a donation from the Duhallow Fittest GAA Club initiative, organised by Kiskeam and Ballydesmond GAA Clubs, in a bid to see which club could clock up the most mileage to raise funds for local charities.

Ms O’Regan said that the aim of the Air Ambulance is to “maximise resources, save time and save people's lives. Our vision is that every person in Ireland will receive the care they need at the right time, to give them the best possible chance of

LIFE AS... A FERTILITY NURSE Caroline Daly, who hails from Millstreet, is a Fertility Nurse at The Scotia Clinic in Tralee where women and their partners are offered fertility, general gynaecology and maternity services

Considering what career path to take? This series of Q&A interviews with Duhallow professionals offers candid insights into what the job really entails...

1. What is your job like?

It is an exciting field to work in. It is ever evolving to help those in need of the service. My day-to-day tasks include taking bloods, performing ultrasounds and counselling patients through the process. The most important part of my job is listening and offering couples support through what is often a very stressful time in their journey to become parents.

2. What subjects did you most enjoy in school/college?

Biology and Social Science.

3. How did you arrive at your current position?

I completed a Degree in General Nursing in IT Tralee before embarking on a Higher Diploma in Midwifery in UCC. I moved to Australia in 2011 where I began my career in the area of Fertility. In Sydney I worked in an IVF clinic for two years where I had on-the-job training. When I returned I worked at Sims in Cork and completed a Grad Cert in Fertility Ultrasound in UCD. 4. What do you love most?

It is varied and technical but at its heart, it is about helping people to become parents. I enjoy every day, even at its most challenging.

5. What do you love least?

Patients describe the process of treatment as a rollercoaster, it has highs and lows. The low is always sad but I try my very best to be as kind and sensitive as I would be to my own friends and family.

6. Advice for students hoping for a career in your field?

Kindness is the most important quality. I would advise anyone thinking of a career in nursing to firstly complete a general degree as it offers a multitude of pathways into many different areas. Be prepared to work hard, but it is an extremely rewarding career knowing you can truly enhance someone else’s life.

Artist in the frame

Photographic art VIV BUCKLEY: Digital artist and photographer, Kanturk Photography has been part of my life for a number of years and it really blossomed when I joined Mallow Camera Club. I achieved Licentiate and an Associate Distinctions from the Irish Photographic Federation, and achieved an Artiste Federation Internationale de L’ Art Photographique Distinction. I also have a number of National and international awards for my work.

Over the last number of years I have developed an interest in digital art and found that by using my skills in photoshop and other editing platforms I could create unique compositions from my photographs.

I like to make my work more individual, artistic and creative by using techniques learned from Photoshop Artistry courses, and improving my skills by interaction with International Awake and Kaizen digital artistry groups.

My work has been published many times in the International ‘Living the Photo Artistic Life’ magazine and I am also a featured artist in ‘My Creative Images’, a UK-based magazine. In 2017 I was an invited Artist for the Kanturk Arts Festival and in 2019 in the Áit Festival in Newmarket. I also had six solo exhibitions in Cork Libraries in 2019. I have a permanent exhibition in the Daily Grind Cafe in Kanturk which is regularly updated with new work.

My favourite genres are portraiture and animals.

During the pandemic I have been inspired by nature and have produced a series of botanical prints using historical photography methods to produce cyanotype prints.

Brush up on pet dental hygiene Smelly dog breath and tartar covered teeth represent some of the most common sights and smells that I encounter in my job.

Poor dental health is very common in our pets and can become a serious problem, eventually resulting in painful toothache.

People often ask me why tartar builds up on teeth, usually citing ‘but he chews his dental stick every day!’ as the reason they are surprised by Fido’s now rotten teeth... Dental sticks are better than nothing, but if you or I didn’t brush our own teeth regularly, we would have smelly breath and tartar covered teeth ourselves.

The most effective and cheapest solution to prevent poor dental health is regularly brushing your pet’s teeth. When I say this, pet

owners usually laugh.

You wouldn’t laugh at your own dentist if he said the same thing!

However, it is important to remember that toothbrushing is a preventative measure, and won’t get rid of tartar already present – your pet would need a dental scale and polish (just like ourselves!) to get rid of that grime.

Toothbrushing is usually easiest to start early in the pet’s life to get them used to the process. A normal toothbrush is fine to use, but make sure you use special toothpaste made for dogs and cats (available from the vets).

Human toothpaste is usually mint flavoured (pets HATE this) and some may not be safe for your pet.

Pet toothpaste is usually chicken or beef flavoured to make the process tasty and enjoyable. Ask your vet or vet nurse for advice on toothbrushing or other dental care options – we are here to help!

Poor posture usually means your head is forward, your shoulders are rounded and your upper back is curved.

Good posture means that your ears are over your shoulders, over your hips, over your knees, over your heels.

The outcome of poor posture is that you tilt forward.

To stay upright, you compensate by curving your back and bending your knees. This also makes your stomach and bottom stick out.

These four activities will help to improve your upper body posture.

You can do them sitting or standing, as you prefer. Try doing them every day after breakfast until you get in the habit.

Start with your feet slightly apart, feet facing forward and your knees soft (slightly bent). Imagine a string is tied to the top of your head. Someone is gently drawing it upwards. When your body feels tall, lift your shoulders.

Draw them backward and lower them into a relaxed position so that your head is over your shoulders and your shoulders are over your hips.

4. Shoulder Stretcher With your arms by your side, slowly turn your hands forward and outwards so that the palms face out. Then, slowly draw your arms back. Hold your position when you feel a little tension along your shoulders.

A Stroll Down Glenlohane Bealtaine, May 2020

At five o’clock in the morning I headed for Abraham’s Cross Where stands a stately monument To the Battle of Knocknanuss.

Glenlohane House in the distance A stately house serene Where Desmond, Mel and Gordon They keep it so pristine.

As I arrived at my destination To my amazement I must say A wakeful chirpy blackbird Sang in the break of day.

He was perched upon the monument Well away from any prey Surely looking forward To the gift of another day.

Just North East above me Solemn stood that hill When in sixteen and forty seven The soldiers' blood did spill.

As I turned towards Killavallig I thought of Rebel Fitz When the pressure was put on him He was really at his best.

I walked along toward Glenlohane Slowly I must say My legs are aching badly But sure they also had their day.

In the lawn the lambs were bleating They were oh so full of joy With wild flowers dotted all around And their mothers closely by.

By now all birds were singing They made a joyful din The thrushes and the bluetits The robin and the wren Pheasants in the background Got in the act as well.

There were pigeons too with their coo coo The crows did soon join in As they caw cawed in their own strong voice For the coming of the spring.

They were latest in their joining, Perhaps they slept it in

Two ducks are swimming at their ease In the pond just by the road With a heron looking over them In their beautiful abode.

I heard a vixen barking In the covert I would say She surely was going a hunting For her dinner for today.

The big pine tree, you could not but see It is so tall and able To its left a younger smaller one I’m sure it is a maple.

In Rob and Billy’s cornfields The grain is really growing It all comes down to these great men And the timing of the sowing.

A hare appeared from nowhere I got a little fright And I’d say by his appearance He was surely out all night.

He turned on his heels again I did not see him anymore When I came around the corner I’d say he was in Gortmore.

I prayed for friends and neighbours And I prayed for my family As each and every one of them Are very dear to me.

As I came towards Rathmaher My memories flooded back To my youthful days so long ago And to this very spot Where we played Cowboys and Indians And I was always shot.

The men who worked this quarry Are all gone to their rewards And without any hesitation Are gone to meet the Lord.

My legs are getting weary now I decided to turn back And I noticed after showers last night The stream was flowing fast.

The sun was after rising then And shining through the trees The bluebells up in Lucey’s Glen Were blowing in the breeze.

As I walk along again Somethings come to my head I’ll have to tell you this one Of one good friend I had.

His name was Towser Moylan A noble noble friend But on one snowy morning He had a bitter end.

The big ash tree I next did see It’s leaves began to twirl And at the top from branch to branch I see a beautiful young squirrel.

I heard a noise inside the ditch And I got a bit excited To my surprise, in front of my two eyes Was the famous Miss United.

The stream just by the roadside Flowing gently on its way And at the end of its long journey Flows into Youghal bay.

The colour all around me And the beauty I can see The white lace and Hawthorn What a lovely place to be.

I said a silent prayer just then I thanked God for my health There is no doubt about it Tis better than any wealth.

There is something I must tell you If you want to be near Heaven Just take a stroll down Glenlohane Between five and half past seven.

Hedgerow recipes: Hairy bittercress Hairy Bittercress (Searbh-bhiolar giobach) is in the mustard family, and has the same peppery, bitter flavour as other mustards.

Like all mustards, bittercress is an excellent natural source of vitamin C. It’s good raw or cooked and makes a delicious garnish or salad ingredient.

It is best to gather the greens very early in the spring or in the late fall when the leaves are tender. When gathering the hairy bittercress, just lift up the cluster of leaf stalks and cut them with a knife near the ground. Then wash the greens and pick through them, discarding the yellow leaves and pinching off some of the larger stems and flower stalks.

They add a peppery bite to raw salads, and can be cooked with soups or in a recipe like other greens.

YOGHURT BITTERCRESS DRESSING Ingredients 120ml olive oil n 2 Tbsp lemon juice n 1 Tbsp maple syrup n 2 handfuls of bittercress greens washed n 1 tsp salt n ¼ tsp ground black pepper n 1 garlic clove n 120ml plain yoghurt n

Method Place all the ingredients except the yoghurt in a blender and blend until smooth. Whisk the mixture into the yoghurt by hand, otherwise the dressing stands the risk of becoming watery. Drizzle the dressing over your favourite salad for a delicious new flavour. Enjoy!

That double delight

By ANDY O’CONNOR 1990 was the most historic year in Cork GAA annals in hurling and football – bridging a gap of 100 years for the county, in completing, and becoming the first county to win the Senior All-Ireland double in the same year.

For us here in Duhallow it holds abiding memories with Danny Culloty playing a significant part in the footballers’ victory.

The hurlers defeated Galway on September 2nd by a score of 5 goals 15 points to 2 goals and 21 points, under the captaincy of Glen Rovers clubman Tomas Mulcahy.

A member of this tream also was Milford’s Sean O’Gorman.

So Sunday September 16th, 1990 became an historic moment for Gaelic games here in Cork as old rivals Meath were defeated 11 points to 9 points before a crowd of 65,723.

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A 1. What/who inspired you to become a sportsperson in your field?

My father Dan coached myself and my brother Sean out at the Polo grounds in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco when we were young growing up; and later, meeting well known Cork footballers like Billy Morgan, Ray Cummins, Connie Harnett and Jimmy Barry Murphy who stayed with us on All Star trips.

2. What was the moment that you knew you were on the right track?

Moving to Ireland in 1982 when my father retired, I was 18 years old and then getting my chance by being called for U21 trials the following Spring. From then on I had to work really hard to make up ground to win my place on the Cork team.

3. What is your greatest strength?

I played a lot of basketball and soccer in High school in SF and this crossed over by helping my fielding and visual awareness on the field as well as my physical strength.

4. What is your greatest sporting achievement?

This would have to be the winning of the 1990 All Ireland, it was everything I dreamed of, followed by the 1998 Junior Football County with my Club Newmarket and captaining Duhallow to two County finals in 1990 and 1991.

5. What is your greatest personal achievement?

My family and the home I share with my wife Catherine, son Daniel and daughters Megan and Alana.

6. What was the greatest challenge you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

Born in San Francisco in 1964, Danny Culloty played soccer, basketball and baseball while attending McAteer High School, before being introduced to Gaelic football by his father. He first appeared for the local Shannon Rangers senior team at the age of 15 and won a number of championship medals.

After returning to Ireland, Culloty joined the Newmarket GAA club and was later included on the Duhallow divisional team. He won back-to-back County Senior championship medals captaining Duhallow in 1990 and 1991; and a County Junior championship medal with Newmarket in 1998.

Culloty made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of

DANNY CULLOTY 19 when he was selected for the Cork under 21 team. He enjoyed three championship seasons with the under21 team, winning back-to-back All Ireland medals in 1984 and 1985. He also won an All Ireland medal with the Cork Junior team in 1984. Culloty was subsequently added to the Cork senior panel and made his debut during the 1985 championship.

Over the course of the next 12 seasons, he won back-to-back All Ireland medals in 1989 and 1990.

Culloty also won seven senior Munster medals and one National Football League medal. He played his last game for Cork in July 1996.

Danny with Maurice Hourigan in 1998; and left, with wife Catherine and the All Ireland Cups in 1990 properly as I had very little under-age experience before I played in Ireland. This was achieved by practice and more practice! Later I had a number of concussions, one with my team mate Anthony Davis in the 1994 All Ireland semi-final against Down when we clashed heads.

7. Who supported you the most in your career?

My parents Dan and Ann and my wife Catherine who spent many years driving me to training and supporting me at games around the country. They had my back.

8. Any advice for young players just starting out?

It is an easy game, the simpler you play it, the easier it is. So enjoy the game but have fun, practice the skills and never give up.

9. What do you do outside of sports?

I work locally for the past 30 years with Shreelawn Oil. Fitness is still a priority for me so I practice yoga and enjoy being outdoors walking in the woods or by the ocean.

10. What are your goals going forward?

I want to stay healthy to spend time with my family and travel.
