Winter Solstice on its way!

The Winter Solstice on the 21st December is the shortest day of the year. This means that once past this milestone we can start looking forward to the gradual lengthening of the days that lead us into spring.

Day length is not just good for us, plants respond to daylight length to schedule periods of dormancy, the production of storage organs such as tubers and when to begin flowering.

Temperature is not a reliable indicator of the time of year because it fluctuates too much (and no two years are alike). The plant relies on day length (more accurately the duration of darkness) as a more reliable indicator of time of year.

The response of plants to the relative length of day and night is called photoperiodism.

In the past, winter was a very tough time and long dark nights must have seemed endless. To help survive winter and celebrate (and hope for) the returning sun, the Celts had the Festival of Yule – which became Christmas. Many of our Christmas customs have survived since this time, including decorating the house with evergreen foliage, which was later added to with the Victorian Christmas tree.

The word Yule possibly came from the Norse word Iul or Jul meaning ‘wheel’ and suggests that this was the time when the year or wheel of life had completed its circle. By midwinter the sun was low in the sky, trees were bare and leafless and the ground was cold and iron-hard. The early Celts must have worried that spring would never return. It was important that heat and vitality were returned both to the sky and the ground. Many evergreens represent everlasting life and were traditionally hung around doorways and windows.

• Mistletoe: This evergreen was seen as inhabiting the worlds between sky and earth; • Holly: An evergreen of protection, holly's spiky bristles are believed to repel unwanted spirits. Together, mistletoe and holly represent the re-birth of the Sun/Son; • Ivy: Evergreen symbol of immortality and resurrection, growing in a spiral reminding the Celts of reincarnation and rebirth; • Yew: Tree of regeneration and rebirth. The yew sends up new trees from its roots and lives to a very great age. Often used as the central 'world tree' in ritual spaces and commonly planted in graveyards.

• The Wreath: It was traditional to make wreaths representing the wheel of life from evergreens.

These could be hung on the doors or laid horizontally and decorated with candles.

The giving of gifts, the gathering of family and the lighting of candles are all associated with the Festival of Yule – and Christmas.

Bweeng, Kilshannig, Laharn & Lombardstown Safety first: Bweeng Development Association are delighted that the final piece of our six-year project has been completed with the 11 new public lights now fully operational. This project included the 50km/h speed limit being extended past the school and the construction of 650 metres of new footpath connecting the school to the village. This has improved the safety in and around the school for all. Thanks to everyone for their support over the last six plus years, especially An Garda Siochana, Cork County Council, Local Public Representatives and the Local Community. Traffic Calming/ pedestrian crossing is next on the agenda for 2020. Bweeng Development Association wishes everyone a safe and peaceful Christmas, and a happy New Year.

Revellers brave the storm for Over 60’s Christmas Party Sunday 8th December saw Bweeng Community Hall & Grounds host their annual Over 60’s Christmas Party and whilst the weather outside was stormy, inside the food and dancing were going down a treat.

Our eldest residents Peg Buckley and Mick Crowley were invited to carry on the tradition of cutting the cake, and the music and dancing went on all night with several people commenting that it had been the best night so far.

Thanks to all that came and we wish you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year.

Last Monday the Department of Rural and Community Development announced the allocation of €1million in funding from the Dormant Accounts Funds to 124 projects across the country.

IRD Duhallow welcomes this funding allocation which is aimed at supporting social enterprise organisations achieve their social, environmental and economic objectives. Three of the seven Duhallow projects submitted by IRD Duhallow were successfully chosen for this funding.

The Glen Theatre in Banteer has been awarded €8,471 towards new theatre seating; Rathmore Social Action Group were awarded €4,000 towards roof repairs for St Joseph’s Day Centre; and the Discover Duhallow magazine was awarded €5,000 towards equipment and software needed for the publishing of this magazine.

As the level of interest was well in excess of the funding available nationally, Minister Michael Ring stated that he would review the possibility of making further allocations in 2020.

IRD Duhallow has worked with Social Enterprises since its inception in 1989. We set up one of the first now CSP-funded social enterprises in Duhallow in the early 1990s to provide a ‘meals on wheels’ service to the elderly and infirm across the region.

Now a stand-alone company, Duhallow Community Food Services has gone from strength to strength, delivering over

Through the LEADER and SICAP Programmes, we have supported many local social enterprise projects by providing capital funding and advice

We also support communities through our CE, RSS and Tús schemes which provide staffing support.

IRD Duhallow has established a suite of social enterprises to serve the older people of the region and those less well off.

Our warmer homes scheme was established in 2007, Furniture Recycling Project in 2016 and the Community Laundry in 2014.

I can remember when ‘Geoff's' looked like this, with the letters of The Castle Bar welded on the decorative metal outside the pub window. I only found out the other night that this wasn't born of the artistic musings of Eddie O'Donoghue. Turns out that one afternoon a loose bull saw his reflection in the pub window and decided to make a drive for it. You can imagine what happened next. So it would appear that what we are looking at here is a Health & Safety measure to protect the patrons!

Activities galore for Donoughmore Macra

Our Chairman Bill Healy and Santa at our Coffee Morning It's been a busy few months in the Donoughmore camp.

Travelling up and down the country competing in various competitions from soccer to stockjudging, public speaking to welding and quizzes to capers – and even managing to have a few nights out along the way.

We held an Ag talk in Pat Barry's bar on all things Ag in New Zealand. We had some great speakers on the night.

Our ladies soccer team Eileen Lyons, Joanne Kiely, Aileen Healy, Emma Flynn, Rachel Buckley and Siobhan Lyons Our annual Christmas Coffee morning was a huge success and we are grateful for everyone’s support – €1,200 was raised for Marymount Hospice.

We are on the road again supporting our Capers team.

They competed in the Cork County round of Capers and are now in action in the All Ireland Semi Final in the New Year.

Residents group had a great year St Theresa’s Place Residents Association celebrated a very successful year with a gathering for tea and mince pies in the Edel Quinn Hall. One of the highlights of this year was the erecting of the St Theresa’s Place signage in English and Irish, thanks to Donal and staff at Kanturk Printers. We continued with our flower planting and our wildlife garden display brought many visitors to the terrace.

We received a Pride In Our Community Commendation at the Muintir Na Tire event in Ballincollig, thanks to continued help from Cork County Council.

Our coffee morning in August was another great success. We have just handed out information about the Neighborhood Watch scheme and are working with our Community Liaison Officer, Garda Marie Casey, to set this up. More exciting news in the next issue, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

Dromtariffe, Kilcorney & Rathcoole The Annual Senior Citizens Mass & Party on January 12th at 1pm in Dromtarriffe community hall, starts with Mass and anointing of the sick then hot meal, drinks and entertainment.

Dromtariffe Active Club travelled to Bunratty on December 3rd for their Christmas party night away. They enjoyed a wonderful night of food, drink and musical entertainment at a banquet in Bunratty Castle. They came home via Limerick where there was plenty of time for shopping before a delicious meal at the Woodlands House Hotel, Adare. 27 members travelled and a brilliant time was had by all.

On December 13th, 25 club members had dinner at the Wallis Arms, Millstreet. A delicious meal was served

by Billy and his staff. The members made a presentation to outgoing coordinator Mary O’Sullivan for her years of hard work for the club.

Lots of action in 2019 for Dromtarriffe GAA 2019 was another great season for Dromtarriffe GAA. On the hurling front, Dromtarriffe retained the Duhallow U21 hurling championship in April when they defeated Robert Emmets 4-19 to 3-10 in the 2018 final. The junior hurlers captured the Twohigs JAHL title for the first time in the club’s history when they defeated Banteer 2-20 to 3-14 in Kilbrin in June. The championship however saw defeat by Newmarket at the semi final stage in August.

Our footballers also continued on from the success of 2018 with county league promotion to division 4. However the season started in March with the U21 footballers who reached the Duhallow C final only to be defeated by Robert Emmets after a replay. As numbers were very tight at our U21 grade the team performed admirably throughout the Duhallow campaign. County League saw the players finish

second in the group to Na Piarsaigh and gain promotion to division 4 – however in the league final Dromtarriffe were short some key personnel on the day and the city side ended up well deserved victors.

The Intermediate Championship saw wins over Millstreet, Glenvillle before the quarter final two match thrillers with Ballydesmond, then on to the semi final v Gaberial Rangers and the minimum separated the teams on the final whistle ending our championship run for 2019. The Junior side stepped up to play Junior A Duhallow league and competed well in all games including a victory over Castlemagner. In the JBFC St John’s claimed the victory.

Off the field of play, Dromtarriffe officers were also busy for 2019.

Dromtarriffe GAA under the chair of Mary Brown launched their history committee who are currently documenting the club’s history from 1885 to 2020. Any match reports, especially from juvenile of ladies matches involving Dromtarriffe teams, are especially sought. Kelvin picks up two awards for Banteer Banteer Macra extends hearty congratulations to Kelvin O’Connor who competed in the All Ireland round of the Macra Welding Competition. The competition took place in the Cork Training Center on Friday, December 13th. The contest comprised both theory and practical aspects which Kelvin did very well in, securing 2nd place.

Enterprise Town Awards Newmarket well represented at Bank of Ireland gala ceremony g By JOHN GUERIN The annual Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Awards now in its fourth year, brings business, community groups and local authorities together, in each town, to showcase the spirit of enterprise in their local area.

Since the inaugural awards in 2016, towns and urban villages across the country have shared more than €500,000 in funding to invest in their community.

Bank of Ireland Chief Executive Francesca McDonagh said: “Strong local economies are the backbone of the Irish economy and we’re proud to recognise, celebrate and support businesses and community groups working together to create jobs, drive growth and build thriving communities.”

This event took place in a gala awards ceremony held at the Lyrath Estate hotel in Kilkenny on Thursday 5th December last.

The process started for Newmarket many months ago with the planning and preparation of the judges’ visit to the town which took place in early September, where we made every effort to get the judges to see first-hand the excellent collaboration and enterprise that exists in our community. An enormous amount of work went into this venture with everyone in the community getting involved, which led us to showcase the enterprising spirit of our town.

Kilkenny was the overall national winner and Ireland’s most enterprising town for 2019, taking home the trophy and a cash prize of €33,000. Castlebar was declared the Rising Star of this year’s awards and were awarded a cash prize of €20,000.

Nurturing a love of

Above and below, students from all over County Cork participated in the programme

In association with the Ballyhass Scholarship Programme, 26 specially selected TY students from nine separate schools all over Cork County have been brought together to discover and learn more about the outdoors.

The programme features participation in adventure and recreational activities, exploring the enormous benefits it plays on our physical and mental health and asking how we can enjoy the natural outdoor spaces available to us so as to promote biodiversity and actually limit climate change.

This inspirational TY program asks students to be ambassadors and advocates for the outdoors in their community. To this end, two great and very interesting action projects have emerged and have passed the first hurdle in being delivered into the community.

On November 30th, students faced a panel of local stakeholders and business people to present their idea: A successful endeavor that yielded positive feedback and partnerships for the students to take forward.

Decline of mussels alarming Like the canary in the coal mine, freshwater pearl mussels are an indicator of the health of Ireland’s rivers. Their declining numbers should set off alarm bells that there are problems with our rivers.

With a lifespan of up to 120 years, the mussels were once widespread, but are now found in only a few catchments. Ireland is estimated to hold around 46% of Europe’s freshwater pearl mussel population, with the Munster Blackwater catchment said to have a large part of the national population.

The mussels are an EU protected species and are very sensitive to polluted water.

Unfortunately, poor land management has led to excessive levels of erosion and siltation in the River Blackwater, which ends up smothering the mussels.

In addition to the silt problem is the discharge of pollutants into the river from poorly maintained treatment plants and other industrial activities.

Another damaging element is nutrient enrichment (eutrophication) leading to algae build up on the riverbed, choking not only the juvenile mussels (which would be smaller than the top of a pin), but equally the adults causing them not to survive to their maturity of 120 plus years. This nutrient

Freshwater pearl mussel enrichment comes from slurry and cattle access to the river. To help combat this, IRD Duhallow through its LIFE projects has in addition to fencing off the river, supplied participating landowners with alternative drinking sources for cattle, such as nose pumps, solar panels and troughs.

Although the issues are numerous and at times complex, they can be tackled. Through the IRD Duhallow RaptorLIFE and following on from the previous

DuhallowLIFE, we have shown that the community can develop and implement simple solutions to complex problems.

On the River Allow we have installed silt traps in farm drains which capture the silt before it can enter the river to kill incubating salmon eggs and freshwater pearl mussel.

Another example is the flood friendly fencing innovation which allows farmers to fence floodprone land which was previously impossible to fence. This allows the vegetation to grow with the roots helping to stabilise the banks, together with planting the vulnerable banks with trees.

These measures, along with the Blue Dot project on the River Allow, provide potential mechanisms to further improve the management of the River Blackwater SAC (Special Area of Conservation – Natura 2000 area).

We are working closely with the landowners and many other stakeholders to unlock the benefits of this type of collaborative working for everyone’s benefit.

The Capers team who placed 1st in the Cork County round, with Miriam Angland, front row extreme right, who was awarded Best Producer Congratulations to Freemount Macra’s Capers team who were placed 1st in the Cork County round in Castlemagner last Friday night. Congratulations to our Capers producer Miriam Angland for being awarded Best Producer on the night, and to Aoife O'Connor for being awarded Best Female. A great achievement for our club and members to win the county title in this competition.

The road to cleaner rivers The Environment Protection Agency reported a 3% reduction in river water quality in the period 20132015. In total, there was a decline in the biological quality of 269 water bodies nationally (source: Water Quality in 2017, An Indicators Report; EPA 2017).

Nutrients including phosphates when entering watercourses lead to eutrophication and a deterioration in water quality. Run-off of soiled water and silt from farm roadways has been identified as one of the primary pathways for nutrients entering adjacent watercourses.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine recently released the minimum specifications for farm roadways. These cover a number of areas such as safety, compliance with regulations, new and existing roadway construction/ remediation and the options and/or recommendations for compliance with the regulation Good Agricultural Practises for the Protection of Watercourses.

Safety of the landowner as always is of primary importance when carrying out any infrastructural work on the farm. The landowner is duty bound to comply with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 to provide a safe working environment on the farm. This also includes ensuring a safe working environment for any contractor hired to carry out construction works.

The avoidance of direct run-off of soiled water from farm roadways to waters is outlined in the Statutory Instrument No. 605 of 2017 Good Agricultural Practises for the Protection of Waters and states: “There shall be no direct runoff of soiled water from farm roadways to waters from January 1st, 2021.”

The regulations further state that “the occupier of the holding shall comply with any specifications for farm roadways specified by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine pursuant to this requirement”. The regulations

A farm roadway in the Allow catchment define ‘waters’ as any river, stream, lake, canal, reservoir, aquifer, pond, watercourse or other inland waters, whether natural or artificial.

To avoid breaches of the Good Agricultural Practises for the Protection of Waters, several options are available to prevent direct run-off of soiled waters from farm roadways to water bodies.

These include cambering the roadway to direct water away from the watercourse, creating earth bunding between the roadway and the waterbody, and/or construction of a stilling or sediment pond to direct water from a roadway sloping towards a waterbody.

Ponds Stilling ponds are particularly useful on heavy or poorly drained soils. A sediment pond with dimensions of 10 metres in length by 3 metres in width to a depth of 1.5 metres is considered adequate to hold runoff from up to 200 metres of a 5 metre wide farm roadway.

The use of dry closed drains as an alternative is also a feasible option for a sediment pond location, once the drain is not piped.

ask himself or herself is whether the farm roadway needs to be relocated if remedial actions or measures will not address the issue of runoff of soiled water from the roadway. If the only feasible option is to construct a new farm roadway adjacent to a watercourse, a grass margin of 1.5 metres must be maintained with the camber of the roadway sloped away from the watercourse.

The use of discharge points, ramps and cross ridges to remove water as quickly as possible from the roadway will reduce the cost of maintenance as potholes and rutting with be less likely.

The use of cow tracks or spurred roadways can also alleviate the issue with runoff downslope on farm roadways, particularly in paddocks adjacent to waterbodies.

Additional benefits to a well maintained farm roadway network include less lameness, improved animal health and the efficient movement of stock and machinery throughout the farm.

Keep up the great work Handball President Joe Masterson and Cormac Farrell of O'Neill’s Sarah. Also well done to all our presenting the Female Player of the Year award to Catriona Casey, athletes who competed at Ballydesmond, at the GAA Handball All Star Awards in Croke Park Newmarket 5k.

5k records smashed in Newmarket thriller Many thanks to everyone who was involved in this 5k, from all at Duhallow Athletic Club, what a day we had, Privileged is one word, to witness two fantastic performances

by Hiko Tonosa and Michelle Finn.

Hiko Tonosa of DSD AC set a new course record of 14:11 knocking 2 seconds off David McCarthy's record on this course. Ladies winner Michelle Finn of Leevale AC set a time of 15:49 knocking 44 seconds off her own record on this course.

Off a potential 480 runners 335 ran with over 100 running clubs being represented on the day. This was a great crowd, especially considering weather conditions affected turnout.

An amazing 115 runners broke 20 minutes to really cement that this is truly one of Ireland’s fastest 5k’s.
