Gifts from the garden Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the time of year when thoughts turn to letting friends and family know how special they are, and how much we appreciate them.

I really hesitate to say the word Christmas, as it is still only November, but if you are looking to reduce your imprint on the world and move away from mass consumerism and the throw-away culture, you do need a bit of extra time to prepare for Christmas celebrations.

Everything required for an extra special celebration can be made, grown, or recycled and, as gardeners, we have an advantage over others, in that all year we have been raising young plants, saving seeds, harvesting tasty and nutritious produce and making preserves, jams, vinegars and oils.

The vegetable garden can provide all the veg needed for the festive season: Onions, garlic and potatoes harvested in late summer and stored, carrots and parsnips, still in the ground waiting to be pulled, bursting with flavour, when required.

Herb infused oils are easy to prepare and make expensive-looking gifts variety, maybe you have cabbage and kale, swedes and beetroot, perhaps the last few tomatoes and chilli peppers. Winter salads and spinach can be harvested fresh when required. What an amazing present a hamper full of fresh garden vegetables would make at this time of year.

There are plenty of other present ideas from the garden for the creative gardener.

Herb Infused Oils Maybe the perfect way to preserve fresh herbs is to make herbal oils. They don't last that long, maybe two months max, but when the herbs blend with the oil, it's the perfect way to spice up any recipe.

You can mix up a batch in no time and decorate your kitchen with a line-up of decorative bottles. They also make costly looking gifts, all the more priceless because you made them.

Herbal Vinegars Flavoured vinegars are as easy to create as pouring hot vinegar over a seasoning. You can use herbs, edible flowers, chilli peppers or whatever you have that's tasty in your garden.

Flavoured Vodka Who wouldn't welcome a bottle of 'homemade' flavoured vodka? Fruit and herbs can be used to create a wide range of flavours. Basil is refreshing, thyme adds a savoury quality, and there are always chilli peppers for those that like it hot.

Dried Herb & Flowers Sachet Creating dried flower and herbal sachets is easy. You don't have to be crafty. You don't even have to know how to sew. Just choose some of your favourite fragrant plants and turn them into fragrant keepsakes. Scented sachets from the garden can evoke an instant change of season.

Pass Along Seeds Are you a seed saver? It seems none of us can resist stashing away a few pods full of ripe seeds from the plants we're particularly fond of. We never trust them to return on their own, no matter how many years it's been since they disappointed us. If you're a seed saver, you have a wonderful gift opportunity. Make up seed packets for your gardening buddies and use them as holiday cards, gifts, place cards, or stocking fillers.

Ballydesmond gets big funding boost Ballydesmond village has been allocated €150,000 funding through the 2019 Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD, announced beneficiaries on Thursday.

The scheme focuses on projects which can help to enhance rural towns and villages. The development in Ballydesmond will include: public realm works, new pedestrian footbridge, replacement footpaths, new footpaths/ buildouts, uncontrolled pedestrian crossings and public lighting upgrades.

Bweeng, Kilshannig, Laharn & Lombardstown

Bweeng’s tractor run a big success The Bweeng Tractor & Vintage Car Run raised over €9,000 in aid of Marymount Hospice.

Now in its fourth year, this year’s event on October 27 saw record attendance with 220 tractors, 19 vintage cars and six motorcycles departing from Bweeng Community Centre.

Participants enjoyed refreshments before taking off on the route, with the tractors travelling towards New Tipperary, and the

vintage cars to Nadd, before returning to Molly’s Bar in Bweeng for a raffle.

The organisers would like to

thank all who helped make this year’s run such a success and for everyone’s generous donations towards a deserving cause.

Kids Korner Preschool Bweeng is open from Monday to Friday, ECCE morning session 9am-12 noon and afternoon Junior preschool session 12.10pm3.10pm. We have places in our afternoon sessions. Kids Korner is a healthy Ireland preschool. Owner preschool room leader has a degree in early childhood education and special purpose award in inclusion training. Aistear is our curriculum which is play based with a focus on children’s interests and what’s going on in the community and nature. We also use Montessori, high scope and Reggio methods.

Castlemagner, Cecilstown & Kilbrin Castlemagner Players present ‘Mother Knows Best’ by Jimmy Keary. This three-act play is again directed by Neil Moylan and will be staged in Castlemagner Community Centre on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd, Sunday 24th, Friday 29th, Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December at 8pm, admission €10.

Vintage Tractor/Car Run: Castlemagner held it’s first ever Vintage Tractor/Car Run recently. There was a big turnout on the day and there was great fun had by all. A huge thanks to everyone who gave their time to help out.

Congratulations to our esteemed parishioner Kevin O'Connor who brought home gold in the 50m backstroke and bronze in the 50m freestyle in swimming last Saturday in the University of Limerick. Well done Kevin, we are all so proud of you.

Family Movie: Castlemagner Community Development Association hosts a family movie afternoon on Saturday, November 30th at 2pm. Popcorn, cordial and ice cream provided and a raffle with lots of prizes. €5 per person, family concessions. All welcome.

Bingo, every Monday in Kilbrin social club from 8.30pm. The jackpot on 18th November was €1,700 on 47 calls. Bonus ball was €320. A big thank you to our sponsors in November Tintean firewood, Kilbrin.

St Stephen’s day walk: A fixture on the local calendar for the last 15 years. We are looking for suggestions for a route for this year’s

Dr Croke birthplace house: A great culture night took place at Dr Croke house recently. A huge crowd was treated to song, poetry and storytelling. People came from Mallow, Laharn, Dromahane, Ballyclough, Lisgriffin, Liscarroll, Churchtown as well as many locals. We would like to thank everyone that helped with the entertainment, with age groups from 9 to 90 and to all that turned up. Special thanks to Noel Linehan who presented a beautifully decorated limestone piece from Lackeel. Also for the Ewe wood

with the various crests from around the world and the back of a seat that Dr Croke sat on at GAA matches. We were also presented with old ledgers and books that are very much appreciated.

Bring and Buy: Kilbrin Village Renewal holds a bring and buy sale on Sunday, 1st December in the community centre. Please donate any household items, toys, books etc (no clothing). Kilbrin GAA club AGM takes place on Saturday 30th November, at 7pm in the clubhouse. All welcome.

Croke Rovers: Hard luck to our U16 Croke rovers team who played the county final against Grenagh on 10th November in Ballyhea. This was a very tough game and all players and management should be proud.

Who are the scholarships for?

Applicants must be 23 years and older, a citizen of an EEA member state or Switzerland AND resident in Ireland or Northern Ireland for 3 years or more. They should be returning to higher education after a break from education of 3 years or more or have recently completed a higher education progression / preparation course.

Successful applicants must apply to and be offered a place on a Bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Programme for 2020/21 in participating institution(s) on the island of Ireland.

How to apply?

Applications must be submitted online by 1st MARCH 2020 with the candidateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biographical and contact details, education and employment to date, a motivation statement and details of two referees.

Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate academic potential, a clear motivation and ambition for returning to education, a drive to succeed and strong work ethic and financial need. School’s joy over language news

Millstreet Community School students will be learning subjects in Irish Millstreet Community School has been selected to pilot a new Irishlanguage project – one of only six post-primary schools nationally to successfully apply for the Content and Language Integrated Learning Project (CLIL).

Pól Uas. Ó Síodhcháin, Principal, is delighted with the news. The three-year CLIL project will provide valuable opportunities for students in Millstreet CS to learn aspects of subjects such as Geography, Home Economics and History through Irish. Mr Ó Síodhcháin is very thankful to the Irish teachers in the school, Alison O’Leary, Suzanne Sheehy, Mary Bridget Casey and Cathal McGuckin for their willingness to partake in the project. Millstreet CS will now

have a significant role in the development of the language on a national level.

Kanturk Men's Shed Group with Evan, Nigel, and Sam Burton of Burton's Topline pictured beside the Suicide Awareness Bench the Group made last summer. Kanturk Scouts are having a busy autumn Since September, Kanturk Scouts have been very busy learning skills and working in the community. In September, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all had a weekend of camping in Doneraile. Over 50 children put up tents, cooked meals, hiked in the nearby hills and enjoyed a great campfire. Until heavy rains put an early halt to a second night under the stars all the children had a great time.

We are very proud of our Beaver children, aged six to nine, who were super at camping and brave for staying in tents on the camping weekend. Beavers have learned to make bridges from recycled materials. They played traditional games like bobbing for apples at their Halloween Party. They also organised a huge collection of Teddy Bears for children in Africa.

Cub Scouts also hiked on Mount Hillary, practicing their map reading and tracking skills. Cubs enjoyed a pet evening, with cats, dogs

Cubs make Christmas decorations and hamsters as guests. Many of the animals were rescue animals, and Cubs hope people will visit rescue centres to adopt a pet.

touched a number of fish. The eels proved a slippery lot. Cubs are busy making decorations to sell at the Christmas Market. These handmade delights will look great on Christmas trees.

The 12-15 year-old Scouts have been working on their emergency adventure skills. They had a great team-building experience when they did a night-hike to the top of Mount Hillary, with ropes connecting them. They also had to rescue ‘casualties’ and transport them to safety. In addition, Scouts are learning how to make furniture from stakes and rope.

Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are getting ready for the fundraising event at Kanturk Men’s Shed Christmas Market. They are busy making and baking. They will also have pre-loved soft toys for sale.

All children will also take part in carol singing before Christmas.

This is a fun event bringing festive cheer to the town of Kanturk.

Cullen & Knocknagree 39th Annual Christmas Mass and party will be held in Cullen Community Centre on Saturday, December 7th at 1pm.

Cullen Pipe Band hosts beginner classes Cullen Pipe Band hold their weekly practice in their band hall in Cullen every Friday evening.

An awards night to remember IRD Duhallow were delighted to host our 7th Duhallow Enterprise Awards ceremony on Thursday 14th November last in the marquee at the James O’Keeffe Institute. This year, our awards were kindly sponsored by AIB, Envirobead, SE systems, Kanturk Mart, IPB Insurance and MIG. We were also delighted to announce our venture into print media this year with our very new Discover Duhallow magazine, with this its 6th edition. Issue 5 featured all our Enterprise Awards shortlisted finalists and this current issue featuring all the details of the glitzy awards night.

For the Enterprise Awards Supplement, credit must go to our staff Helen O’Sullivan, John Guerin and Joe Polizzi, as well as Conor Judge who had the responsibility of completing all the write ups on each company shortlisted which resulted in a professional and well-presented supplement. We are very proud of the event and all of the contestants.

MC on the night, our Assistant Manager Eileen Linehan, outlined the impact of IRD Duhallow, celebrating 30 years this November. In this time, the company has had over 150 voluntary Board members with over €60m of EU and Exchequer funding levered into the region.

Noel C Duggan Enterprises took home the overall winner for 2019 and we were delighted to welcome three generations of the family to the event.

Entertainment after the awards was provided by none other than Liam O’Connor and his band.

Catering on the night was by Duhallow Community Food Services Ltd, who served up a banquet to meet the standard of the best hotels. DCFS provides hot meals to the elderly and it is subsidised by events like this.

Many thanks to Jeremiah Dennehy of Brogeen Crafts for creating the beautiful handmade trophies which were presented to each of the winners on the night.

Huge thanks to our staff for the car parking, organising the marquee and serving the food.

The teamwork of all our staff across all programmes made the night a memorable one.

Address by IRD Chairperson at Business Awards 2019 As the Chairperson of IRD Duhallow I am delighted to welcome you all to our 7th annual IRD Duhallow Business Awards.

It is of huge pride to the Board and I, that these awards continue to grow and seven years later, continue to celebrate Excellence in Local Enterprise.

These awards are important as they recognise that enterprise comes in many forms in a rural area like this. From those in the very early stages of starting up; to those who address social issues in the community; the strength and resilience of a family led business; to the important role we must play in supporting female entrepreneurship; not forgetting our artists and those in the craft sector, as well as the long established businesses that have stood the test of time and weathered the storms. Tonight we celebrate them all.

We have estimated that throughout the IRD Duhallow area we have 20,000 people

Judging the Business Awards was no easy task Every year, the entrants for the IRD Duhallow Business awards are scored over a range of factors such as innovation, sustainability, contribution and presentation.

This allows for a systematic approach and fair treatment to all of the finalists. Independent outside adjudicators willingly give up their time to read the application forms, visit each of the businesses and meet to discuss the awards before selecting the winners.

Business Awards 2019: BEST OVERALL WINNER The year 1875 was a different time. Young people married locally or not at all, emigration was a one way ticket and going to Dublin was a serious undertaking.

In many ways, it was a time alien to our modern sensibilities but some human aspects of life have remained constant, namely the importance of family and place.

This was the theme echoed by Noel C.Duggan in his acceptance speech for the award of ‘Best Overall Business’ that recognises the highest scoring finalist across all categories.

The theme of family and place that would have been central to identity in the year of their foundation as a local hardware store are themes that continue to drive the business almost 150 years later.

Noel C spoke highly of his attachment to place and his family’s genealogy, tracing their ancestors in Duhallow back to the 1400s and steeped in the traditions of the Sliabh Luachra area.

He gave thanks for the work of IRD Duhallow as a well-respected local organisation that contributes much to the local area and economy. For someone who has mingled with the good and the great and received wide-ranging recognition for his life’s work, Noel C’s opening gambit that ‘it was nice to receive this off our own’ was greeted with rousing applause and a reminder that where one comes from will always matter.

Best Social Enterprise sponsored by SE Systems Social Enterprises are an increasingly attractive option for those who wish to marry the societal impact of the NGO sector with the ability to make a living doing something one cares about.

Government support is also coming on-stream with the announcement of the National Social Enterprise Policy 2019– 2022 last July and €1 million of small scale capital funding to be allocated before year end.

The everyday support of those not in the labour force and the bottom-up ethos of an enterprise board were all worthy ideals promoted by this year’s finalists.

However, it was the far reaching services offered by the Canon O’Donovan Day Centre that won over the judges to be crowned IRD Duhallow’s Business Awards ‘Best Social Enterprise’ of 2019.

Operated by Millstreet District Housing, in conjunction with the HSE, the centre operates Monday to Thursday, 10am-3.30pm and is open for dinner on Fridays also.

Some of the services on offer include morning tea with homemade scones, four-course midday meals, nursing services, a weekly hairdresser and physiotherapist as well as a fortnightly chiropodist.

Moving beyond basic needs, the centre also offers an assortment of pastimes including exercise, dance, bingo and cards, musical singalongs, monthly mass and hand massages.

The European Social Fund: Promoting inclusive education and lifelong learning opportunities for Young People in Duhallow The Communicating Europe Initiative (CEI) was established in 1995 to raise awareness about the European Union and to improve the quality and accessibility of public information on European issues.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade funded initiative aims to build public understanding and knowledge about Ireland’s EU membership. Ireland has seen many benefits since joining the EU in 1973. IRD Duhallow was recently granted funding through this initiative to promote inclusiveness among Young People in Duhallow as well as exploring what the EU means for Young People.

IRD Duhallow recognises the value of Ireland’s membership to the EU and in particular the value to our own local economy through various European funded initiatives such as LEADER, European Social Fund and Raptor LIFE to name a few.

The European Social Fund (ESF), is the European Union’s main financial instrument for helping people seeking employment through investment in education, skills and employment support.

For the period 2014-2020, ESF investments within Ireland have

Over the last number of years, IRD Duhallow has been successful in receiving funding for initiatives which are co-funded by the European Social Fund. These include the Social Inclusion Community Activation Fund (SICAP) which promotes social inclusion among Local Community Groups and Individuals. Through this programme many supports are offered for Young People in Duhallow. Some of these supports have included literacy and numeracy classes which are facilitated weekly in IRD Duhallow by three local primary school teachers, an annual Careers Exhibition for Secondary Schools which has colleges attend from around the country and Public Speaking Workshops. Other supports have included seminars on topical issues such as Cyber Bullying and Childhood Stress and Anxiety, and nutritional workshops for Young People with a Disability.

IRD Duhallow’s Ability Programme, is a three year programme which targets young people with a disability (aged 15-29) to develop socially and to improve their employment prospects through a range of person centred supports.

The Ability Programme, builds upon the young people’s learning through practical activities that support them to transfer skills to home life and to the local community.

Through the delivery of a range of training courses adapted to the individuals’ specific needs, the programme aims to help each young person to become as independent as possible.

St Nicholas Church, Kilcorney re-dedication service Almost two years ago, St Nicholas Church Kilcorney was severely damaged by Storm Ophelia.

Following extensive repair and modernisation, Bishop William Crean (Bishop of Cloyne) performed the blessing and re-dedication of the Church recently.

Pat Sheehan on behalf of the community welcomed the Bishop and priests and gave a short history of Kilcorney Church which was first blessed and dedicated by Bishop Timothy Murphy on Christmas Day 1856. He paid tribute to the many priests who had served in the community over the years and he also paid thanks to Fr Winter for his determination to get St Nicholas Church up and running again.

In his homily, Bishop Crean said it was an honour and a privilege to be re-dedicating this church as he had been in Kilcorney the day after the storm and he has seen first-hand the destruction that it had caused.

He spoke about the value of the church to the local community and The Annual Boherbue Christmas Market takes place on Saturday 7th December in Pearse Memorial Hall, Boherbue from 12 noon-4pm. There will be a wide variety of stalls to choose from including baking, jewellery, arts and crafts etc. We will also have a visit from Santa, so why not bring the children along to meet him and take away a lovely gift from him and his elves. Of course, Santa would not be visiting without the kind generosity of our sponsor, Michael and everyone in our local SuperValu in Boherbue.

Fr William Winter PP of Banteer spoke of his joy on getting to this night and Anniversary Social: Kiskeam GAA Club hold a 25th Anniversary Social to celebrate winning the Duhallow Junior A football championship in 1994 after a lapse of 30 years. This team also reached the County Final losing narrowly to Erins Own. Social will be held on Saturday 7th December at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Meal served at 7.30pm sharp.

Students enhance their public speaking Over the past two months, IRD Duhallow organised the annual Public Speaking Event for Primary School Children across Duhallow.

Now in its 12th year, the event took on a changed format reflecting the needs of parents and children and one that allowed for greater inclusion and the building of foundational skills in the world of public speaking. The event was funded by the SICAP programme and all the primary schools in Duhallow were invited to take part.

As part of the focus on establishing a baseline skills level, IRD Duhallow’s Youth & Education Working Group sought the assistance of Siobhán Keenan Fitzgerald of the Let’s Stand Programme. Siobhán is principal of Eglish National School in East Galway as well as an entrepreneur, Dragons’ Den contestant and TEDx speaker. She has developed

the Let’s Stand programme, a dedicated curriculum for primary school children that breaks down the skills of public speaking into an accessible, easy to understand and fun format. Over the course of three weekend workshops at the James O’Keeffe Institute, children learned structured skills such as: g Standing Up, Speaking Out and Eye Contact g Speech Structure, Hand Gestures and Story g Facial Expressions, Visual Aid / Prop, Body Language

Students from the surrounding areas worked together in a collegial fashion to prepare speeches in their chosen topics and bring them to life through the techniques learned in the workshops. These were performed at a public speaking showcase event in front of over 60 friends and family members last week.

IRD Duhallow’s Youth & Education Working Group would like to give thanks to the contestants, parents and teachers who made it possible and kindly provided additional support and guidance.

The work of Siobhán is greatly appreciated as one of the first of its kind in this area. Siobhán will be releasing an upcoming book where children and educators can learn more about the programme and the importance of public speaking in our world today.

Private well survey invitation A 3rd-year PhD research student at Technological University Dublin is inviting all private well and private group water scheme users to take part in a national survey concerning private groundwater contamination, climate change and risk awareness.

Banteer ploughing on Banteer Ploughing Association will hold their annual ploughing match on Sunday 1st December.

The match will be held by kind permission of the Philpott Family, Knocknacolon, Kanturk. The event will be signposted on the day – it is located on the Kilbrin road out of Kanturk. The postcode for the event is P51 HWO1.

The ploughing match will see competitors from all over Munster battle it out to qualify for next year’s All Ireland Ploughing Championships in Fenagh, County Carlow.

Locals competing on the day are from the clubs of Banteer, Kilbrin and Twopothouse. Banteer Ploughing have three competitors going up against each other in the senior conventional class: Billy Tarrant, Dave Murphy and Joe Twomey.

Billy Tarrant placed within the top 10 at this year’s All-Ireland, while Dave Murphy placed Joint 1st in his class. This is the last ploughing match for these ploughmen to qualify for the All Ireland in 2020.

The competition is expected to be fierce on the day. There will be

Lismire & Newmarket

Newmarket Sports & Leisure serves an ace Newmarket Sports & Leisure in conjunction with Newmarket Community Development Association has been awarded significant Sports Capital funding towards a new Astroturf surface and lighting for the West End Tennis Courts.

Experience in other tennis clubs has shown huge uptake in the sport once this type of surface is installed. The new lights will also enable people to play during the long winter nights.

Work is presently underway on separating the West End walkway from the playground with new fencing and tarmac installed.

Self closing gates are also included. A huge thanks to Cork County Council and IRD Duhallow for their support with this project.

Congratulations to local lad Thomas Sheehan who recently got presented the Exemplary Attitude award at the Scoil Mhuire Kanturk awards night. Thomas is well known locally as each year we get to witness him putting his brilliant acting skills on display in the local variety show. We look forward to seeing what he has in store for us next January!

Jack Roche, Chairman of IRD Duhalllow’s SAOI Network, addressing the audience at the senior’s conference The sold out Duhallow Seniors Conference proved to be hugely popular last week, with almost 200 people attending. Titled the ‘Older & Bolder – Seniors Miscellany’, the conference featured a wide range of speakers and invited guests on different topics relating to older people.

The event was MC’d by the Saoi Network Chairman Jack Roche, who commenced the conference by saying how important it is that we bring events such as this to local rural people. The conference was officially opened by Newmarket native and renowned author Alice Taylor. Alice gave an entertaining presentation on the history of Newmarket.

There was a wide variety of speakers on different topics. Sharon Morrissey from Family Mediation spoke about grandparents’ rights and entitlements and how family mediation can support families experiencing separation. Next was a presentation

from Seamus de Faoite on Adaptation and Mobility grants from Cork County Council. Sharon McGillicuddy, who is the HSE Sports Promotion Officer, spoke on the importance of actively ageing and exercise for older people. Caitriona Dunlea and Mary Howard from Irish Ancestry Direct showed how to start researching your family tree and the delegate packs contained useful websites to help people with their search. Pauline Lynch from Diabetes Ireland presented some shocking facts on diabetes: • 380 million people with diabetes worldwide • 1.5 billion people obese worldwide • 327,000 Irish children either obese or overweight • 1 in 4 children under 5 are over-

weight or obese in Ireland Pauline showed what to be aware of in relation to diabetes and how to help prevent this disease.

The final speaker of the day was Helen O’Sullivan from IRD Duhallow.

Helen is the community services team leader and she spoke on the many supports IRD Duhallow deliver for older people including Duhallow Community Food Service, the Warmer Homes Scheme, IT training for Seniors, Furniture Revamp and Community Laundry, which all offer vital supports to allow older people to live comfortably in their homes.

After lunch, conference delegates were invited to try some of the conference break out workshops which ranged from Activator Poles, Chair Yoga, Go for Life Games and Get Walking Workshop.

In closing, Jack thanked the HSE and Cork Sports Partnership for their funding towards the event.

Is dementia linked to stress?

This is a very big queston....what causes dementia Doctors and medics are constantly researching, trying to find out and are always looking for a cure.

A major review of published research suggests that chronic stress and anxiety can damage areas of the brain involved in emotional responses, thinking and memory, leading to depression and even Alzheimer’s disease.

In my own life, for the past 20 years I could definitely say that stress was the single biggest problem. Talking to people who have dementia of all types, many will tell you that they have had very high levels of stress in their lives.

This is not a medical diagnosis, this is just what I have seen and learned from talking to people who suffer from this disease.

In my case, stress first led to blood pressure problems, progres-

Now there are definitely things that you can do, to take just a little bit of stress out of your life. When you look at your week, see if there is space for change, no matter how small, which may help to make your life a little easier. You could get up 15 minutes earlier and listen to some guided meditation, I have to say I find it helps me.

When I was working for myself, if someone had told me to take time to meditate, my answer would have been, ‘I don’t have time for that

rubbish’ and right there was my problem. I wasn’t taking time out to unwind, relax and take stock of what was happening in my own life.

Maybe if I did, I might not have wound up in the position that I find myself in today, but who knows.

Since I started my journey, having been diagnosed first with Parkinson’s and then with Lewy Body Dementia, I have got involved with some wonderful groups and met some fantastic people. In Munster we have people like Amy Murphy, Southern Dementia Advisor, in the Memory Room in the Mallow Health Centre – there is help available, therefore there is no need to feel alone or isolated.

Health eating seminar goes down a treat The Healthy Eating and Mindfulness Seminar took place on the 7th November in the James O’Keeffe institute. The seminar was a great success and an excellent opportunity for participants to ask questions and further their learning following the eight-week course which focused on providing easy tips for transforming eating habits and choosing healthy and nutritious food, frugal recipe tips and cooking with leftovers.

Caroline O’Connor, a registered paediatric dietitian, mum of four and founder and owner of Solid Start gave the opening talk at the event which focused on baby's first bite to the challenges of feeding toddlers. Caroline gave a fascinating run down on What and How to feed to set up positive healthy eating habits for our children which will last a lifetime. Caroline offered up to date, factual, no-nonsense

Donna Westley, a HSE Community Dietician was also one of the speakers present at the event and she spoke about the role of a community dietician and also provided valuable advice on creating quick, healthy and affordable meals for adults.

Also present on the day were nutritional information handouts, healthy recipes, free tasters and free blood pressure testing and pulse checks. The seminar was a huge success and provides an exciting glimpse for what is to come in 2020!

Recognition of Learning Ceremony

g By Olivia Quinn The recognition of learning ceremony took place on the 19th of November in the specially erected marquee at the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket.

The event was a major success and celebrated the achievements of all our graduates throughout the year.

On the night, John Lonergan – who worked in the prison services for 42 years, 24 of them as the most senior prison officer in the country – was a guest speaker and gave a very inspirational talk on the importance of education and lifelong learning.

A large number of IRD board members also attended on the night to present and congratulate all those receiving awards for their achievements in lifelong learning.

On the night, certificates of attendance, level 4 major awards, level 5 minor awards, level 5 awards and certificates from the Irish Heart Foundation were awarded to participants of numerous courses which ran throughout 2018 and 2019 in IRD Duhallow.

Environment

Farming for nature highlighted All good things come to an end. On Friday 8th November RaptorLIFE, a €3.2 million EU LIFE Nature project coordinated by IRD Duhallow, held its end of project conference at the James O’Keeffe Institute.

The conference brought together the State agencies, NGOs, farmers and other stakeholders to highlight the results of this important project for the Duhallow region.

Opening the conference, chaired by journalist and author Paddy Woodworth, were Niall O’Donnchú, Assistant Secretary Department of Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, John Breen, IRD Duhallow board member and Director of Services at Kerry County Council, and Eileen Linehan, IRD Duhallow.

The two themes of the conference were the conservation of threatened birds like the hen harrier, river animals like the Freshwater Pearl Mussel and lamprey, and the important role farmers in upland Duhallow play in helping conserve these species.

Eileen Linehan, RaptorLIFE project manager, said: “The RaptorLIFE project followed on seamlessly from IRD Duhallow’s previous LIFE project, SAMOK. The successful completion of both LIFE projects shows that a local development company like IRD Duhallow, which is embedded in the local community,

The day-long conference saw an exciting line up of speakers, from IRD Duhallow’s RaptorLIFE scientists on hen harriers in Duhallow to farming in the Burren and the Iveragh peninsula.

The conference also saw the launch of a book: Duhallow: A Living Landscape for Farming and Wildlife,

by Canadian researcher Dr Jodie Asselin and RaptorLIFE scientist Dr Allan Mee. The book gives a farmer’s perspective on the issue of land designation as a Special Protection Area, the challenges and opportunities for farming and local communities, and how farming and

wildlife can and do co-exist to their mutual benefit.

Allan Mee said: “Carrying out the RaptorLIFE project would have been impossible without the cooperation of local farmers, whose land many of the project actions were carried out on. IRD Duhallow’s RSS team, all local farmers, were also critical to the success of the project, from removing reseeding forestry to controlling knotweed and balsam, invasive species that threaten the ecology of rivers like the Blackwater.

“We hope that the RaptorLIFE project, and indeed the Living Landscape book, will stand as a testament to the farming community in Duhallow despite the many pressures on upland farmers in a fast-changing world.”

All in all, the project conference was a great event highlighting the positive impact that farming for nature can make.

The idea of a future LIFE project application on the conservation and restoration of bogs in Duhallow was raised by IRD Duhallow CEO Maura Walsh in closing the conference.

She said: “IRD Duhallow has submitted an application for a future LIFE project and look forward to extending our successful relationship with the EU LIFE programme into the future.”

Sports Eventing Regrettably, the Irish bid to host the 2022 Eventing World Championships in Millstreet proved unsuccessful with Pratoni del Vivaro (ITA) being announced as the venue for the FEI World Championships for Eventing and Driving in September 2022. Speaking after the announcement, Thomas Duggan said: “Understandably, we are disappointed that we have not been chosen as the host venue for the FEI 2022 World Eventing Championships. We were aware from the outset that multi-discipline bids were the preferred option by FEI and we invested ourselves heavily in the Championship bid process; putting the best possible bid forward for Ireland. I want to thank all the stakeholders in the process for their help and support since February this year. We have learned a multitude throughout the bid and selection process and look forward to putting this experience to use on future occasions. The Duggan Family and the Millstreet Team remain ready and willing to cooperate with FEI in the future to showcase and stage equestrian sport at the highest level. We look forward to the 2022 Championships and wish FEI and the chosen venues every success.”

Congratulations to Knocknagree, who held off a late Gabriel Rangers fightback to secure the Cork County Intermediate Football Championship title at Páirc Uí Rinn on the evening of Saturday, November 2nd, emerging victorous with a final score line of Knocknagree 2-10 Gabriel Rangers 1-11.

Cycling News Congrats to Dillon Corkery currently riding for VergPi Cyclocross team in Cork who recently signed a contract with a team in the north of France called VC Toucy for the 2020 season ahead. His season up to date has been jam packed from riding with the Irish under 23 team in World Cups in France, Belgium, Czech Republic and many more places, to the European championships in the Netherlands and the World Championships in Yorkshire.

It was an interesting season with lots of highs and lows but lots of

things learnt from it too, Dillon is looking forward to riding for his new team with many goals for 2020. He hopes to perform at the highest level possible with his new club in France but also with the Irish team again and will want to impress the guys up top and make the next transition and hopefully progress even more. Best of luck to Dillon in 2020.
