Through September, Michael walked an incredible 136 miles and then some! Through public support of this goal, he handed over a cheque of €3,120 to Donie Lucey of the Irish Community Air Ambulance.

Scoil Mhuire Kanturk News Maths Week

Maths week took place in Scoil Mhuire. Students took part in activities such as puzzles, an Escape Room, Bingo and Maths Dingbats, which were supported by our TY volunteers. As well as the in-class activities, there were Maths puzzles added to the notice board each morning. TY students attended two webinars; The Maths of Crowds and Do Statisticians have superpowers. Well done to all students involved.

Fundraising efforts

TY students took part in their first debate as part of The Concern Debates competition. Our debaters were Eion McGrath (captain), Cliona Barrett, Kaylee Morrissey, and Rachel Desmond. The debate took place online and our team faced Scoil Mhuire agus Íde from Newcastle West, Co. Limerick.

Their motion to debate was “School strikes are an effective way of getting governments to act on climate change”. Well done to all involved.

We welcomed Donie Lucey from the Irish Community Air Ambulance to Scoil Mhuire Kanturk to speak to our TY students regarding the fantastic work and service that they provide. We are so lucky to live near this life saving service and are so proud to fund raise for them. We presented a cheque to Donie for €350, the proceeds of the mini marathon completed by staff and students. Thanks to our school community for their generosity and participation and we look forward to raising funds for them again in the future.

European Languages Week Our annual European Language Week celebration was a great success in Scoil Mhuire Kanturk! Our wonderful and innovative Transition Year students organised many activities such as French Treasure Hunts, French Bingo, A European Landmarks Poster Competition, French Crêpe Making, French, Spanish and German Quizzes, Spanish cooking, and more! They also made time to create a Happy Birthday video to celebrate the 20th birthday of European Day of Languages which can be viewed on our school’s social media sites. A huge thank you to all the Transition Year students involved. It was wonderful to see them gaining some teaching experience and also expanding their skill sets. Vive les langues!

Bulbs for Bees

To celebrate 35 years of Gaisce - The President’s award and to protect one of the most important players in the climate change battle; bees - Gaisce have a special challenge. They are asking everyone in Ireland to plant pollinator-friendly bulbs to help safeguard the future of our vital bee population. They have called this initiative Bulbs for Bees.

Bees play a major role in the pollination of vital food crops, and it is estimated that one third of the food we eat everyday relies on pollination by bees. Worryingly, one third of Ireland’s 98 wild bee species are threatened with extinction which is due to the drastic reduction in natural habitats.

In early spring, many of these wild bees come out of hibernation and need to safely establish their nests for the year, which takes a lot of energy. By planting pollinator friendly bulbs, we will provide these hard working bees with some sweet, sugary, carbohydrate-rich nectar, which they depend on for energy and pollen.

Newmarket Afterschool’s was delighted to receive a pack of bulbs from IRD Duhallow and play our part in #BulbsForBees campaign. The children learned how these bulbs we are planting now will flower next year and will provide food for the bees. They thoroughly enjoyed getting stuck in to the planting and are excited to see what will flower next year.

They planted Grape Hyacinth and Crocus.

The #BulbsForBees campaign is supported by Irish Local Development Network, Lidl, An Post, and is funded by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.

LEADER in the community

Spotlight on History, Heritage, and Genealogy

Based on the premise that there is a strong interest in history and genealogy in the communities of Duhallow, this project provided attendees with an introductory course in genealogy followed by a more advanced course for those wishing to avail of same.

Throughout the 16 weeks of training, attendees were thought about the importance of recording, documenting, and archiving the memories of their own families, along with the customs, traditions and practices that characterise our communities. Additionally, interest in genealogy is growing as a hobby, with students showing a huge eagerness to trace their ancestry and genealogy.

The participants were introduced to various research resources

thus equipping themselves with the necessary information to investigate their own family trees.

This training enabled participants to be introduced and supervised in carrying out research into familial heritage. Learners were guided in the use of genealogical records in repositories and online, including census, birth, marriage, death, valuation records, church registers, will and memorial inscriptions.

The students who participated in the advanced class undertook a day of field research in Dublin, where introductory visits were organised to the National Archives. Here the group were met with a senior archivist. They also visited the National Library of Ireland where they met a genealogy advisor.

Finally, they attended the Valuation Office where they were able to research the land occupancy. This

In order to complete the course those who undertook the advanced training were requested to submit a research project to develop their analytical skills and assessment of facts.

This LEADER project presented the learner with a prime opportunity to expand their knowledge base and to gain practical information on how to continue with their own investigations thereafter. As the Chinese proverb reminds us: “To forget one’s ancestors is to be a book without a source, a tree without a root.”

#SICAPstories Introducing the Duhallow Women’s Forum

Duhallow Women’s Forum, established in 1997, represents a network of 17 women’s groups in the area. It plays an important role in improving women’s quality of life in Duhallow including improving women’s access to education, training and personal development supports in preparation for accessing better quality employment, self-employment and improved social skills as well as supporting women’s advancement into decision making roles.

The forum also aims to identify, acknowledge and celebrate the role of women in Duhallow. It is committed to enhancing the capacity of locally based community groups to promote female participation.

The forum is affiliated to the

National Women’s Council of Ireland, which is an umbrella organisation for women’s groups in Ireland. This allows the Forum to link in and work with the NWCI in determining its core priorities and be involved in decision-

making levels at local, national and international level.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018 – 2022 provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals, community organisations and public sector agencies.

Administered by Pobal and funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Rural and Community Development, Members of Duhallow Women’s it also receives funding from the Forum pictured at the Launch of European Social Fund under the the National Women’s Council of Programme for Employability, Ireland’s, resource for women’s Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) groups and women working for 2014-2020. social change and equality at local level.

A Look Back In Time

The T.V. show Succession seems to be very popular at the moment. It may very well be that succession is a very important thing for many people to consider in terms of protecting one's self, one's family and legacy. In 2016, in response to increasing bureaucracy and regulations in relation to farming, IRD Duhallow's Agriculture Working Group organised a conference on Succession and Wills addressing the subject. Karen Walsh, solicitor with Walsh and Partners, was the guest speaker. She covered topics relating to farm transfer, inheritance, the importance of wills and succession planning.

Life With Lewy: Kevin Looks to the Future

My name is Kevin Quaid, and almost five years ago, I was diagnosed with a disease called Lewy Body Dementia, after first being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. I was at the ripe old age of 53 at the time. The day I was diagnosed, I can say the only word that I heard was “dementia” and I was certain that it must have been a mistake; at that time, I had very little wrong with my memory. Little did I realize the road that it would take me, and I came to find out how important a proper diagnosis of dementia is.

There are around 400 different types of dementias and while there are some similarities, their symptoms and treatments are all so different.

If you or a loved one have been told that they have dementia or a touch of dementia, then they have not been given a definitive diagnosis. You need, and indeed have a right, to know exactly what type of dementia it is; for example, the difference between a person who has Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

In the early stages, their symptoms could not be more far apart. Therefore the treatments, diagnosis and medication are completely different.

Can you imagine if you were told that you had cancer or a touch of cancer, would you let it at that? You would want to know what type of cancer and what treatment is available. So why should Dementia be any different?

When I was diagnosed first, I went searching for answers on Lewy Body and I found very little information. With the help of our local dementia advisor, Amy Murphy in Mallow, I joined the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland and became involved in their working group. Eventually I became vice chair

and then chair of the working group.

Last year, I became vice chair of the European Working Group of people with dementia, and it’s with great pride that I represent my country in Europe.

Three years ago, I wrote my first book, Lewy Body Dementia Survival and Me, and little did I know at the time that I was the first person in the world to write a book about Lewy Body Dementia from the patient’s point of view. They say never say never, and at the time I finished my last book, I said that never again would I write another book. But nearly two years ago, the bug hit me again and I started my second book which was released recently; I am KEVIN not Lewy. This book is completely different; where the last book was about being diagnosed and how we coped as a family, this book is one of hope. My one wish is that when you have finished reading the book, you will say to yourself “if they can do it, then so can I”. Every family in the country at some stage in their lives are given news about dementia, cancer, or something else that will change your life forever, and this book is to help you cope when that time comes. Maybe you are going through a tough time now, then I really do hope that you will get encouragement from this book not to give up hope.

This book looks at what I have achieved since I was first diagnosed, and it looks at different ways and different things that can and will make your life easier. There is a chapter in it about Jerry Buckley from Freemount who, despite his diagnosis of cancer, never gave up the fight, lived in hope, and never gave in until the day that he passed away. I recall his fighting spirit, resilience, and love of life. One of the beautiful poems that he wrote is included in the book.

There is a beautiful chapter by former 2FM DJ Gareth O’Callaghan, author of What Matters Now, about his life and his battle with Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA) and how he copes from day to day.

There is a beautiful piece from Dr Helen Rochford Brennan who

was diagnosed with young onset Alzheimer’s disease nine years ago and she is still going strong. These are just a few people who contributed to this book, so as you can see, it deals not only with dementia, but MSA and cancer also.

The one thing all of these diseases have in common is that they are progressive and incurable, but they can be slowed down with treatment and life can be made a little easier, not in every case but in a lot of cases.

So if this book only helps one person, then it will be worth it.

What is Lewy Body Dementia?

Lewy Body Dementia or Dementia with Lewy Bodies is one of the most common causes of dementia. In Ireland alone, there are between 6,000 and 10,000 sufferers. It is caused by abnormal clumps of protein building up in the brain over time. These disrupt nerve cells connectors in the brain and cause changes in movement, thinking, behaviour, and alertness.

The symptoms are similar to Parkinson’s and may include: • Difficulty walking - rigid muscles, slow movement, tremors.

• May be more prone to falls.

• May experience periods of severe confusion.

• May experience hallucinations.

• May have difficulty swallowing.

• May sleep easily during the day while having disturbed sleep at night.

• Many with LBD suffer with REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder and horrific nightmares as a result.

Assisted Decision Making What is it, who needs it, and how to plan for it New decision-making supports 1. Decision-Making Assistant: A relevant person whose capacity is or may be in question may appoint a decision-making assistant to help obtain, interpret information, and communicate their decision. The person is still the decision-maker.

What you need to know about the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015 Although signed into law, the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015 is largely not yet operational. Practical preparatory work is ongoing, and the Act is due to be fully commenced in June 2022. So why is the implementation of this legislation so important?

Some 200,000 adults across Ireland may require support to help them make their own decisions about matters relating to their personal welfare or property and affairs. For example, they may have an intellectual disability, a mental illness, an acquired brain injury, or dementia. In addition, any one of us could experience difficulties with our decisionmaking capacity at a time in the future, making this an Act for everyone.

2. Co-Decision-Maker: A relevant person may register a co-decisionmaking agreement, under which specified decisions are made jointly with an appointed, trusted person.

3. Decision-Making Representative: As a last resort, any person who has a bona fide interest in the welfare of the relevant person may apply to the Circuit Court for a declaration in relation to the person’s capacity to decide about a particular matter or matters. The applicant will often be a family member or carer. If the court finds that the person does not have capacity, it may either make the decision or appoint a decisionmakingrepresentative to make the specified decision(s) on behalf of the person.

Key reforming features of the 2015 Act The Act adopts a functional assessment of capacity. This means that capacity is assessed in relation to a specific decision at a specific time. The Act sets out important guiding principles, emphasising respect for an individual’s will and preferences, rather than a best interests approach. The current wards of court system will be abolished. Next year, following commencement, all adult wards will have their cases reviewed by the court and will exit wardship within three years. Where appropriate, these former wards will be able to access the new supports available under the 2015 Act. Any person who wishes to plan ahead, should they lose capacity in the future, can make a statutory advance healthcare directive or an enduring power of attorney.

The establishes the Decision Support Service with functions to promote and regulate these new arrangements.

It is important to note that at present an adult’s ‘next-of-kin’ has no legal authority to make decisions or give consent on behalf of an adult who lacks decision-making capacity.

The Pakman Awards ceremony, which took place at the Shelbourne Hotel, saw representatives from leading organisations and community groups come together in accordance with government guidelines to recognise achievements in recycling and waste management over the last two years.

Of this, over 166 tons has been redistributed in the community. IRD Duhallow Revamp also provides a refurbishment service for those who wish to have their old pieces upcycled and revived.

Tips for a Healthy Relationship

As adults we all strive to be in healthy relationships, we feel safe and comfortable when we are in relationships with mutual respect and positive regard. When we show consideration and regard for others we expect to get the same in return. This can be difficult to achieve and is almost impossible to experience all of the time- all relationships go through conflict and hard times and this has never been more evident than within the past 18 months. We have worked and lived in the same place, with the same people, with very little opportunity for personal time or pursuits outside of our families.

So, how do you navigate the difficulties in relationships in a way

that shows respect and allows you to feel heard. Try these tips for maintaining good communications: • Ask yourself why you are really upset before you confront your loved one. Are you really angry because your partner left a cup in the sink? Could something outside of the relationship be causing these feelings?

• Discuss one topic at a time; try to stick to the issue being discussed and not on the last arguments. Discussions that get off-topic are more likely to get heated and less likely to solve the original issues being discussed.

• Take turns speaking. Give your attention when your partner is speaking; avoid interrupting or making corrections- your turn will come to speak.

• Take time-out if needed. In a perfect world, all argument would

get resolved, but we do not live in a perfect world. So, take time away, take a short break, and go for a walk. Especially if things get personal or heated. Respect your partners need for a break also. Try to agree a time to revisit the topic at a later date.

• Try to reach a compromise.

You do not have to ‘win’ every argument. Reach an agreement that allows both sides to need compromising.

Remember, perfect relationships only exist in the virtual world. Do not compare your relationship to the people you follow on Instagram or watch on TV. Other people only show you the best parts of their lives. Your relationship can be healthy and meaningful even with conflict. In fact, that is what makes in real.

Creating Exercise Habits

I am often asked, “What is the best type of exercise to do?”

My answer: the one you can do consistently. Boring I know, but that’s the truth!

Doing something that you dislike is probably going to fail. For a habit to stick, it needs to be something you enjoy.

To make an exercise habit stick, I believe there are three main principles to follow 1. Make it a ritual Like early morning exercise? Have

Prefer to exercise in the evening?

Book a class for you when you are on your way home from work, you are less likely to make the excuse not to go when it is on your way home.

Making it part of a ritual makes it more likely that you will stick to it.

2. Book it in the diary Schedule your exercise like you would a dentist appointment.

Commit to a day and time and put it in your diary. Rope in a friend and you are more accountable to complete your workout.

3. Start small So small that you can’t fail. Start with 10 squats while the kettle

Is Your Pet In Pain?

As pet owners, we can all easily recognise when our pets are happy, whether it be the exuberant wag of a dog’s tail or the gentle purr of a cat. What we are less skilled at is recognising the signs of a less happy, painful pet. Pets can sometimes be very subtle in giving us clues that they are in pain, with this being an issue in cats more than dogs. Signs of pain to look out for in our pets include being quieter or more reserved than normal, being less inclined to go for walks or be active in the home, a limp or stiff gait when moving, avoiding jumping or negotiating stairs more gingerly than usual, a reduction in appetite or being

reluctant to be touched or held.

The signs may vary depending on where the pain is in the body, but the bottom line is that a pet does not have to be crying or whimpering to be in pain – usually if it gets to that stage the pain is severe!

A good example of a time to be particularly watchful for signs of pain is after routine neutering procedures. The wide variety of pain medication available to us

these days means that no pet should be in pain after routine spay or castration surgery. Modern veterinary hospitals will take steps to prevent pain at every stage of the procedure – for example, in our hospital we use a whopping 4 types of pain prevention medications in combination on the day of surgery to ensure every pet is as comfortable as possible, with pets returning home to recuperate on pain relief medication for several days after the operation.

The old days of leaving pets pained after surgery to keep them quiet for the recovery period are long, long gone. Be sure to ask your vet what pain relief strategies they use in their practice when booking in for neutering surgery – every pet deserves as much comfort as we can provide – no compromises!

November - The Month of the Dead Every month of the Church calendar is always symbolically linked with a devotion or theme but perhaps the most sobering of all themes is death and the afterlife.

November with its darkening days is suitably given the mantle of “the month of the dead” or “month of the holy souls.”

In November we can reflect on the topic of death.

The Church teaches that immediately after death, our soul separates from our body and we stand before God for judgement.

We then enter Heaven, Hell or Purgatory.

Those who are free from all sin enter Heaven immediately. It is the ultimate end and destination we long for, it is a state of eternal

happiness. It is important that we realise its existence and the great joy in store for us when we meet all our loved ones again.

Purgatory is a place of purification and the greatest pain is the absence of God. Hell is for those who have deliberately chosen to reject God’s mercy and love.

Death is the one certainty of this life. There is no escape so it is important that we prepare for it.

We pray for the holy souls and we remember also those who have no one to pray for them.

Our holy souls cannot pray for themselves but they are praying and interceding for us.

Usually, a plenary indulgence is granted from November 1st to the 8th but this year Pope Francis has again extended the time. We may

Keep Watching The Skies

I wrote back in June about the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis here in the South West. I also wrote that it was a matter of time and luck. After all, we need a clear sky, we need it to be moonless, and we need this to coincide with a time when the aurora is happening.

Well, as luck would have it, this happened on Wednesday the 3rd of November, around 9.30 PM or so. As you know, I wrote about getting the AuroraWatch UK app to alert to the possibility of aurora. Of course I followed my own advice; I have the app.

I also have my twitter feed set up to let me know when there is a chance for an aurora.

Needless to say, on the 3rd of November, my phone lit up with alerts letting me know that there was a good chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

The Heat Around the Corner Michael Mann’s crime epic masterpiece Heat (1995) took all things old about the cops and robbers genre and made them new again.

In writing about Manhunter, I eluded to writing about what I thought was Michael Mann’s masterpiece; well here it is. I do feel this is the sun in Mann’s cinematic universe. This is the one that pulls all his themes and interests together - men who are loners following a code of honour, the relationship between men and women, good and bad, our place in the world. It also shows just how amazing a stylist he is in relation to image and sound. As I have said before, Mann might be the most influential filmmaker of the last 50 years- many have stolen from him (hello Nicolas Winding Refn!)

Heat is a sprawling story but in essence, it follows Al Pacino as Vincent Hanna, a cop going after a team of professional thieves led by Neil McCauley (played by Robert De Niro) in the wake of a robbery gone wrong. The story behind Heat is just as riveting as the movie. Mann became friends with a former Chicago police officer, Chuck Adamson, who was looking to get into writing. He told Mann about his encounter with a robber named Neil McCauley.

Adamson was following McCauley and his gang of thieves leading up to a heist they were about to pull off. One day, they met in a car park and instead of bullets flying, Adamson invited him for

coffee in a diner. And over this coffee they talked. Adamson asked him why doesn’t he go rob somewhere else. McCauley just said. “I like Chicago”. Chuck said it was just really simple stuff like that. He even liked the guy but both were well aware of the other’s capacity to kill each other without hesitation. Adamson would kill

McCauley eventually. Mann filtered all this into Heat and the result is electrifying. Cops and robbers is a well worn trope in movies but here, Mann completely rejuvenated it with the internal lives and conflicts of each man. In talking about his movie, he wanted to clarify that it’s not necessarily that Neil and Vincent are flip sides of the coin but it’s the duality of man. That if Neil was a cop, he would be one of the greatest cops and vice versa. Similarly, the idea that both men admired and respected each other, but would not hesitate an iota of second in killing the other man fascinated Mann. It looks and sounds amazing. Once again, Mann collaborated with Dante Spinotti, and he bathes the movie

in cool colours; greys, blues, and greens. L.A. has never looked this good.

Mann has always been a great sonic explorer and his works are littered with fantastic music and scores.

Heat is properly moody and atmospheric. The header relates Neil’s philosophy of dropping everything in 30 seconds flat if trouble arises. And the ultimate question- “One answer: Yes or No”- runs throughout Heat. Each answer leading to a definitive outcome. We do it every day in our lives. It’s the existential quandary that looms over us, that we are more or less responsible for everything that happens to us.

Vincent knows this, Neil knows this. Heat endures as a giant in the crime genre. It has one of THE greatest onscreen shootouts.

Every performance, big and small, is superb. It brought together two of the greatest male actors of the 20th century, De Niro and Pacino, who had never acted in the same scene together before (they were never onscreen together

in Godfather 2, only in a screen dissolve). This may very well be the last truly great movie both Pacino and De Niro performed in.
