Banteer Community Sportsfield The Community Sportsfield welcome a grant of €3000 from SSE Airtricity Windfarm Community. Coomacheo and Curragh Community fund towards the development project at Banteer Sportsfield SSE Airtricity is Ireland’s leading provider of wind power. Through their Community Fund programme, they have so far contributed over €6.5m in voluntary annual funding to community groups close to wind farms.

Banteer Community Sportsfield Fundraising Draw Tickets are still available for the 2021 annual draw. Banteer Community Sportsfield request that all community members and users continue to support the annual supporters/users fundraising draw costing €100 p.a. This can be paid in €25, €50 or €100 instalments in cash, cheque or by direct debit, whichever suits. All contributors will be entered into a draw for cash prizes with a total prize fund of €4,000 per annum plus additional vouchers etc.

WIN AN ECO GARDEN ROOM “Knocknagree Community Development Group, set up in 2017, recently launched their “Win A Eco Garden Room” Fundraiser to help with two planned projects. Our vision is to make Knocknagree a vibrant and busy rural area, and attract more people to make Knocknagree their home.

We want to bring Knocknagree back to its previous glory where business, music, and dance flourished. We are aiming to commence work on two projects by the end of the year; a playground near the church and a sensory garden with the help from IRD Duhallow Ltd and Cork County Council. Aid For Polish Refugees

I would like to thank all of the people and businesses who supported my aid for the refugees affected by the humanitarian crisis on the Eastern border of Poland.

As you might have heard, there are hundreds of refugees who are currently crossing the green border from Belarus, but not being allowed to enter Poland.

These people are stranded in the forest, trying to survival the harsh,

sub-zero conditions. There are a number of children amongst them.

They have no access to water, food, first aid, medical support, dry, warm clothing, or any sort of shelter. They are being helped by the Polish people who live on the border, who bravely go into the border area and search for people who are hiding there.

The donations I am collecting now will be sent to the Red Cross, who will in turn dispatch the goods to the border area most in need. A massive thanks to all of you who delivered bags of warm clothing, blankets, food, and sanitary products, as well those who very generously donated money.

So far, I managed to raise over €600 and collected 6 boxes of warm clothing and goods, 3 of them already on way to Poland.

I would like to thank all

of the businesses who supported the cause financially and through providing goods or free services, including Supervalu Newmarket, Speedpack, Doll House Newmarket, and Nathleen’s Montessori.

DISAPPOINTING LEADER ALLOCATION UNDER CAP A BLOW FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES

Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) representing the Country’s 35 LEADER providers have expressed deep disappointment at the allocation for LEADER 20232027 announced as part of the indicative CAP measures.

Commenting on the allocation of €180 million for the period 20232027, ILDN Chairman Jim Finn said; “this allocation marks a continued decline in support for

Rural Communities through LEADER over the course of successive programmes.

Prior to 2016 the LEADER Programme exceeded over €400 million over the budgetary period. Today’s allocation points to another devastating cut to the Programme over the course of the last decade.”

Finn continued; “for 30 years LEADER has been a driver for Rural Development across Ireland.

It is extremely disappointing to see how funding for the Programme has diminished significantly over recent Programmes.

A Look at Lombardstown On 30th October at 4.00 pm in Lombardstown, County Mayor, Councillor Gillian Coughlan will launch a book on the History of Lombardstown Creamery from its founding in 1890 to its amalgamation with Ballyclough on January 1st 1967.

This was the first co-operative creamery sponsored by Sir Horace Plunkett, and was pipped by just over one week

by Dromcollogher to be the first co-op in the country. When Dromcollogher collapsed in the mid 1890’s, Lombardstown became the oldest co-op. creamery in the country, and its early successes were significant in saving the fledgling co-operative movement from collapsing at that time.

This creamery grew to become one of the foremost in the country, and its reputation spread throughout Ireland and beyond, as far as England.

It got involved in the retail sector in 1895, hardware and agri sales shortly afterwards, and began purchasing and leasing out expensive agri equipment which was of great benefit to the smaller farmers. It got involved in many innovative processes and grew to resemble an industrial estate employing over 80 workers in its prime.

In conjunction with the book launch on the history of the local creamery, Lombardstown Community Council will also launch an Information Board on the role played by the local Lombardstown Company of the Irish Volunteers in the War of Independence.

This company was very involved in that war; 17 members were incarcerated as a consequence

of their activities, two more gave their lives for the cause, and as a measure of the company’s competence, General Liam Lynch moved his brigade HQ into the area for much of that war where he had a selection of “safe” houses to work from and where numerous attempts by British round-ups failed to capture him.

The board contains a full list of the active members, the safe houses, those jailed, and those who were members of the Battalion flying column. Some members of Cuman na mBan are also listed but many more could not be ascertained.

There is no doubt that the families of those active members played a significant role in the war. These freedom fighters deserve our sincerest gratitude, and it is time to honour their sacrifices in a tangible way.

Three copies of the information board have been produced with one going on display in Lombardstown, another in Glantane GAA complex, and the third will be presented to the local Glantane NS, where many pupils will begin to appreciate what their ancestors fought for and achieved.

This book has many photographs and memorabilia going back to the 1890’s, and will be on sale on the day and in all local outlets afterwards and would make an ideal Christmas present for exiles and locals alike.

LEADER in the community Spotlight on: Kanturk Mart of the farming

This project provided 57 additional car parking spaces: 20 long-term spaces for employees of local businesses and 37 short term hourly and weekly rental rates.

Kanturk Mart has been in operation for 60 years and has not only served the farmers in the region but the entire community.

It serves as a focal point for the community, and is regarded as a place to do business and a meeting place for many members

The IRD Duhallow Youth and Education Working Group promote social, personal, and educational development of young people in Duhallow. Down through the years the working group has been actively involved in promoting the developing activities for the benefit of the youth of the Duhallow area.

As a staple in the annual calendar the SICAP programme provides for a series of workshops and a closing event with a view to building the confidence of local school children to develop one of the most important and challenging skills of all – public speaking.

The project has helped children to overcome the natural fear of public speaking that many children and adults often struggle with. By

overcoming this fear, students will be better able to speak confidently in class, at home and in the wider world.

The next round of this project will take place over 4 weeks in November & December. Content includes: • Warm-ups (Physical voice, proud stand /sitting, breathing).

• Topics to practice.

• The preparation of short speeches to deliver to the group.

• Evaluations focusing on the positives/strengths of speaker.

• Students will learn how to give and receive feedback.

• Students will learn the art of visualisation plus the benefits of affirmations.

Children will master the preparation of a speech on a topic of interest and will have the opportunity to present the speech to an audience consisting of other students, teachers, parents, 2 expert judges, the programme

Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP Update - October 2021

450g pumpkin flesh 125g light brown sugar ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp mixed spice ½ tsp cinnamon 3 eggs Whipped cream to serve (opt)

Pastry

240g cream flour Pinch of salt 180g chilled butter 2tsp caster sugar 1 egg yolk 1-2 tbsp of water Premade pasty is also acceptable.

Pastry

Add the dry ingredients to the bowl first.

Cut the cold butter into cubes and rub into the dry ingredients until it looks like breadcrumbs.

Add the egg and mix.

If it is not forming into a ball, add a little water. Repeat until satisfactory.

Pat into a disk and chill in fridge for 30-40 mins.

Preheat the oven to 190C Bring a pan of water to the boil and boil the pumpkin flesh in chunks until it is tender enough to stick a knife or fork through. Drain and blend. One by one, add the spices, then the eggs, until you get a thick cake batter.

Roll the pastry and line a deep 8inch flan or pie dish. Prick the base, cover with baking paper and bake for 10 mins.

Take it out then leave it rest for 15 mins before adding the pumpkin batter. Place in the oven for 45-50 mins until well set.

Serve with whipped cream.

Bweeng Community Sports

“They say it takes a village”; never was a saying mo

Throughout its history, pride, passion, and togetherness have been to the forefront in the North Cork Village. This has been the case across all aspects of the community, and as the village has grown over the last two decades, so have clubs and activities within the community. While the growth in activity has been most welcome, the pressure that has been put on the sports and recreational facilities within the village has been a challenge at times.

The focus of most of the activity and the heartbeat of the community is the Community Centre grounds. The Eamonn Waters Memorial Park is the village focal point for all sports activities - soccer, athletics, basketball, tennis, hurling, and football. This park was officially opened on the 31st of July 1955, and since that date, the park has had numerous additions; Community Centre, Dressing Rooms, Basketball/Tennis Court, Playground, Community Walkway, and most recent, a new roof added to the community centre.

In the earlier years, the GAA club of Kilshannig would have been one of the major clubs using the facilities, but in more recent years, they have been joined by Bweeng

The opening of the Eamonn Waters Memorial Park in Bweeng on July 31, 1955 by Very Rev. Canon Hayes or Astro which creates a huge challenge when trying to maintain fitness over the winter months.

This facility will incorporate a range of sporting activities such as athletics, long jump, high jump, throwing area, and a level playing field in the centre for all sports which will be converted into an Astro surface in phase two, and all of this will be under flood lighting.

At the end of 2020, we formed a project committee and started on our journey of researching the possibility of a new sports facility for Bweeng. We visited different projects like Coorclare track, Clane Track, Kinsale track, Derg AC track Killaloe, Astro in Coachford and Macroom just to name a few, and we gained a huge amount of knowledge from the people involved in all projects. But it was the 200 meter track in Clondrohid village that appealed to us the most as a best fit for Bweeng.

In January 2021, we formed Bweeng Trail Blazers juvenile club which currently has over 100 members.

In February, we contacted

IRD Duhallow, and with their outstanding support and guidance, they set us on a path with initial funding to start our project.

Horgan/Lynch engineers were contracted to oversee phase 1 + 2 of the project i.e. feasibility study and planning.

We completed our first fundraiser in May which was a Ball Run, and on the 26th September we launched our major fundraiser.

While they say it takes a village, we certainly need the support of much more than that to realise our dreams and convert them into a state of the art facility for young

Recovering from Covid

There have been a really high number of cases of Covid-19 in Duhallow recently, so I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my favourite products to help with recovery.

For a lack of energy, we have a couple of great tonics.

Did you know that Birr Castle was home to one of Ireland’s most famous amateur astronomers?

From 1845 until 1914, the largest telescope in the world stood in the grounds of Birr Castle. It was the brainchild of William Parsons, the 3rd Earl of Rosse, and through it, he made many wonderful discoveries. He named the Crab Nebula, and was the first to document the structure of spiral galaxies, although at the time, they didn’t truly understand their nature.

He was also an amateur astronomer in the sense that he had a telescope in his backyard and used it to explore the wonders of the universe. Astronomy is one of the few sciences where amateurs can still make important scientific discoveries. The universe is a vast place, and there are only so many professional telescopes turned on it. It is still exciting when I’m observing the sky and I stumble across a faint fuzzy patch that I don’t recognise and feel the thrill of discovery rise up. One always hopes it is an undiscovered comet, but deep down, I know it isn’t, and when I do a bit of

Nowadays sophisticated amateur astronomers in Ireland have computer guided telescopes hooked up to CCD cameras and make remarkable discoveries from their backyards. They discover and track asteroids and comets, monitor the planets for changes and discover supernovae (when

a star spectacularly blows itself to bits). A handful of supernovae have been discovered from backyard observatories in Ireland in the past decade. Imagine, being the first human to observe another star destroying itself and then popping into the house for a cup of tea!

It doesn’t stop there though.

Amateur astronomers are now getting in on the act of observing planets around other stars. Well not directly; but they are plotting the amount of light coming from stars with planets around them.

When a planet passes in front of the star, the star gets dimmer. How much dimmer and for how long depends on the size and distance of the planet from the star.

This data collected by amateur astronomers in their backyard is helping scientists understand solar systems around other suns. Pretty amazing what some people get up to in their backyard.

Keeping your pet safe at Halloween

With Halloween fast approaching, spooky season is upon us! Although Halloween can be a fun time for all the family, four legged members included, it can also carry a few potential dangers, many of which are easily avoided with a little planning.

Below are my tips for a pet safe Halloween: • Keep all the goodies for the trick or treaters out of reach of your pets. Chocolate, sugar free sweets, and raisins/sultanas (in the barmbrack!) are all potentially poisonous to dogs and cats. If an accident does happen and your pet does eat any of these

Halloween treats, swift action by contacting your vet immediately after ingestion for treatment can be lifesaving.

• Although the family may enjoy getting in the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as witches or other such spooky characters, it is important to be careful about dressing your pet up in costume for the occasion too. Some pets are quite comfortable with being dressed up, and seem to love all of

the attention. Other pets are fearful of having costumes anywhere near them, and in this case dressing up is a no go as your pet’s welfare and happiness is most important.

If your pet is comfortable wearing a costume, make sure that the costume is in no way restrictive to your pet’s movement or snug around their neck. Be careful of any costumes which include a hat – some pets can happily pose in hats for a few seconds to take a photo, but these are best taken off after a minute or two to ensure they don’t cause your pet any annoyance.

• Make sure your pet is secure in the house for Halloween and hence can’t run off and get lost if loud bangs do occur.

Microchipping in case the worst does happen is also a must!

Are your beliefs holding you back?

“I’m too old.”

“I don’t have enough experience.”

“No one would be interested in hearing about my ideas.”

Does this type of thinking sound familiar? Do you notice that your thoughts stop you from doing the things you would like to do? This type of thinking is examples of self-limiting beliefs; the beliefs and thoughts that stop you from achieving your goal or doing things that you really want to do.

Self-limiting beliefs are assumptions or perceptions that we form about ourselves and about the way the world works as well as our perceived place in the world. They are self-limiting because they hold us back from what we are capable of. These

types of beliefs usually originate from our early experiences in life, when we form a picture of how the world should be. These beliefs are not always true; there is often very little evidence to confirm them but our brains see them as facts because we think they can protect us from rejection, danger or feeling vulnerable.

How do we overcome this type of thinking?

• Start by trying to understand their purpose. All beliefs have a purpose, usually to keep us safe and protect us from negative outcomes. In the case of self-limiting beliefs, this purpose is often misguided and can block our progress.

• After we discover the purpose of these beliefs, we can learn to question them. We can question if they are valid or useful. We often find that they

have no use or purpose.

Laugh at them- humour can be a great tool for reducing the power thoughts have over us.

Laughing at the beliefs we hold can help us to let go of them as we can see that they are of no use to us.

• Formulate new beliefsReplace existing beliefs with more healthy ways of viewing things.

• Retrain your brain using positive affirmations- repeating the beliefs you would like to have can help us to see them as the only way of thinking.

Changing our belief system can take time, after all, it has been our way of thinking for most of our lives, but a new broom sweeps clean- a new mind-set can open up a whole new world for us.

Like Burnt Toast

Quite possibly one of the most influential horror movies of the last 50 years, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is still a truly odd, frightening movie experience that penetrates you and never leaves.

Based on the novel by Stephen King, The Shining was the first Stanley Kubrick movie I ever watched. It follows Jack Torrance who agrees to a job as a caretaker in the Overlook Hotel over the winter while it is closed. Joining him are his wife Wendy and son Danny, who possesses a unique psychic gift and realises the hotel is starting to have a troubling effect on Jack...

Probably one of the most revered cinematic masters of the 20th century, Kubrick was so unique in cultivating his own style, he even earned his own adjective ‘Kubrickian’, meaning: “meticulous perfectionism, mastery of the technical aspects of film-making, and atmospheric visual style in films across a range of genres.”

That was what jumped out at me even at an age where I was only beginning to learn about the grammar of cinema. The Shining in every aspect - look, editing, sound, acting, was... odd. It was unquestionably the oddest horror movie I had seen up to that point. His framing and

pacing was so different to any other movie I had watched up until that point. Kubrick has been accused of being a very chilly filmmaker, his movies are seen by some as being very cold and unsentimental. It’s hard to argue with that assertion but I tend to disagree as well. No one depicted

the flaws and existential crisis of humanity like Kubrick. King famously hated the movie, saying it was like a beautiful Cadillac car with no engine. Regarding my header for this review, it’s a reference to something the hotel’s chef says to Danny regarding ghosts and trauma, that trauma can leave a certain energy behind like the lingering smell of burnt toast. Ask anyone that has visited the various concentration camps on tour, for example and they’ll tell you that the air there feels heavy and different. The Shining has a chilly air, an off kilter and uncanny feel, one that didn’t sink in

with my first viewing but really left a mark on the second. It’s one of my favourites, It had a decent sequel with Doctor Sleep in 2019 and I recommend Rob Ager’s channel Collative Learning on YouTube where, amongst others, he has done a rich analysis on this movie, unearthing its hidden themes and motifs. Such is the mysterious power of the movie and its fans theories, it lead to a documentary Room 237, showcasing certain theories relating to the movie being about: faking the moon landing, the genocide of the Native American Indians, and the Holocaust.

Is it a story about an alcoholic father abusing his family or a haunted hotel driving a man into madness? It’s up to you on how you interpret it. It works either way.

A movie of true authority when it comes to the horror genre, its awesome atmospheric, frightening power still looms large. Essential.

Through the years In this section, we take a photographic look back at IRD Duhallow and its involvement and relationship with the region through the years.

This issue - 2014

Visiting anglers are always welcome to the region of Duhallow. In 2014, Duhallow was delighted to host the 5 Nations Fly Fishing Championships and welcome many international visitors to the region. Nine teams competed including three from Ireland, two from France, two representing Scotland and a team from England and Belgium.

That same year, Tom Ankettell (pictured left, on the left) took a stand at the Angling fair in Utrecht, Germany, promoting the region as an excellent spot to visit.

IRD Duhallow certainly agrees.
