repairing this monumental building saw the church get a big re-do that took two years, leading to a momentous reopening ceremony celebrated by the locals, former priests in Kilcorney, and Bishop William Crean himself. Tadhg Curtin writes about it inside.

A Hive Of Support For BUMBLEance

BUMBLEance have received a share of support from the Duhallow community! On the right are Cork Music Station founders Ita and Willie Fitzgerald from Cullen and Danny Tobin making a presentation of €1,319.42 to Jim Burke of BUMBLEance, proceeds from their recent fundraiser. The BUMBLEance service is the first of its kind in the world. The ambulance has everything a regular ambulance does, but has extra comforts and distractions to make sick children’s journeys as safe and entertaining as it can be.

Build your own nest box during National Reuse month By STEPHANIE MOYNIHAN

Celebrating Ireland’s National Reuse month, IRD Duhallow Furniture Revamp is delighted to cooperate with IRD Duhallow’s SICAP funded Community Education, offering the highly anticipated ‘Build your own nest box’ course, focusing on how to build a nest box and where to place it in your garden.

October is Ireland’s National Reuse Month. Reuse is about valuing our stuff, by using and reusing it for as long and as often as possible. This avoids the need to extract raw materials, manufacture and distribute new stuff, and avoids waste thereby cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions.

This might sound like stepping back in time, to when post-war

frugality meant that people held on to things for longer, passed on things they no longer needed and recycled everything from curtains to car parts. But Ireland’s National Reuse month, is targeted at a generation that grew up in a consumer culture that didn’t consider where things came from or went to after their use – never mind the environmental consequences of using up primary resources and dumping toxic waste.

Throughout October organisations all across the country hold and attend community-based workshops in a multitude of areas such as managing food waste and upcycling everything from fashion to furniture. The idea is to bring people beyond the idea of “reduce,

reuse and recycle” to a more conscious prevention of waste in the first place.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018 – 2022 provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals, community organisations and public sector agencies.

Administered by Pobal and funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Rural and Community Development, it also receives funding from the European Social Fund under the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

Farewell to Maambo

Maambo Chifwepa was given a work placement by IRD Duhallow from May to September 2021 as a requirement for the award of the MSc. in Co-operatives, Agri-Food, and Sustainable Development at University College Cork. During his work placement, he conducted a research study in sustainable rural development that assessed the impact of the IRD Duhallow LEADER 2014-2020 programme by tracking and profiling the progress of the project promotors.

Maambo stated that he ‘counted this opportunity as a rare privilege to be accorded a piece of research

by IRD Duhallow, especially considering IRD Duhallow is one of Ireland’s renowned rural development companies’. His gratitude goes to IRD Duhallow CLG management

team that provided an enabling environment for his research. He has since returned to Zambia to his Civil Service role of which he is confident that the knowledge and skills gained will be useful in the Rural Development Department.

He feels his experience with IRD Duhallow is key in the transferring Maambo Chifwepa with IRD Duhallow CEO of learned skills Maura Walsh and knowledge, particularly on the development in sustainable rural development and support of innovative programmes including social community businesses enterprises.

The Issue We are becoming more and more aware of the negative impact of chemical pesticides such as glyphosate on our pollinators and waterbodies. Another pesticide that is causing havoc to our native biodiversity is chemical rodenticides or ‘rat poison’. While rodenticides offer a very effective control against mice and rats in our homes and farmyards, their impact on nontarget organisms can be devastating.

Unfortunately, the toxic chemicals in rat poison can work their way up the food chain, causing secondary poisoning to unsuspecting predators.

Combined with other factors, the increased use of chemical rodenticides (and the increasing toxicity of such baits) has contributed to the decline of several bird species in Ireland including the Barn Owl and the Kestrel; both of which are now red-listed (of highest conservation concern) by Birdwatch Ireland.

Conservation in Duhallow When grouped by habitat, upland areas and farmland contain the highest proportion of red-listed bird species, and recent research from Birdwatch Ireland and IRD Duhallow has shown that Duhallow continues to support a stronghold community of successfully breeding Barn Owls.

Due to the suitability of habitats in Duhallow for many bird species, conservation efforts here have a major impact at the national level.

Therefore, while nobody wants mice or rats in their house or farmyard, it is crucial that we consider alternatives to chemical rodenticides.

By not using rodenticides and by creating favourable habitats for birds of prey such as owls and Kestrels, we can encourage these birds to act as natural rodent control! A breeding pair of Barn Owls can kill 2,000 rodents in just one year, hence their reputation as the ‘farmers friend’ in times gone by.

Rodenticides and Biodiversity

Alternatives to Rodenticides •Remove access to food. Ensure feed storage in farm yards and food storage in households is tidy, organised and stored in rodent-proof containers.

•Remove harbourage. Where possible, remove whatever it is they are under or within and seal holes that they may use to enter buildings.

•A farmyard cat or small dog (such as a Jack Russel) is a classic pest control. The same can be applied to the household through a house cat or dog.

•Trapping – live or instant-kill.

A Look Back In Time

Through the years In this section, we take a photographic look back at IRD Duhallow and its involvement and relationship with the region through the years.

This issue - 2012 / 2013

2012 saw Ireland endure one of the wettest summers in decades up to that point. As a result, the silage made that summer was poor in quality resulting in a severe fodder shortage that affected farmers and their livestock in a big way. IRD Duhallow began to try and assist with the crisis. Members of the IRD Duhallow Agriculture Working Group met with Áine Collins TD, at her constituency office in Millstreet to discuss the severe fodder shortage in Duhallow. Tom Dunne of Newstalk spoke to John Linehan, Chairperson of the IRD Duhallow’s Agriculture Working Group, during his visit to Duhallow to report on the crisis. Fodder from abroad finally got to those that needed it. A crisis no farmer wants to go through again but nearly a decade on, Duhallow agriculture is still going strong!

This post will be managed by IRD Duhallow. The post holder will also have a reporting relationship to the employing organisation in the local area as ell as a local steering group comprised of local representation/ stakeholders with representatives from CKHC HSE. The posts are funded by CKHC HSE Mental Health Services and are administered and supported through Cork North Community Work Department CKCH HSE.

The overall aim of the post

The Rural Community Health Work Service/Team will work across rural areas of North Cork inclusive of IRD Duhallow, Ballyhoura Development and Avondhu Blackwater working with and enhancing existing services to support the development and delivery of a Community Health Programme locally, which is modelled on a Community Health Worker role and that of a Social Prescribing Service. The role of a Community Health Worker focuses on improving the health and lifestyle of a community through a series of health focused initiatives that build on existing services and facilities.

Roles and responsibilities of the employee • To enhance existing services and support the development and delivery of a Community Health Programme locally which is modelled on a Community Health worker role and that of a Social Prescribing Service; • Under the guidance of the Steering Group (which will comprise of local representation/stakeholders with reps from CKHC HSE) ensure that project specific outputs, outcomes and the agreed budget are adhered to in line with the contractual agreement; • To focus on improving the health and lifestyle of a community through a series of health focused initiatives that build on existing services and facilities; • To support areas of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention in the rural community; • To explore ways of mitigating the risk of suicide in the community i.e. by empowering people to be aware of and encouraged to engage in activities that contribute to their overall mental, physical health and wellbeing; • To seek to inform members of the community with up to date and relevant information in how to access support services for themselves or others who are emotionally vulnerable and maybe having thoughts of suicide; • To inform the community of the range of mental health/well-being/suicide prevention training modules that are available both face to face and online; • To offer people who are bereaved or affected by suicide information on supports available i.e. via the Suicide Bereavement Liaison Service, Samaritans etc.

Riders on the storm - Kilcorn

A blast from the past; Storm Ophelia caused great destruction to Kilcorney Church in October 2017, but a community pulled together to repair a vital place that symbolises not just a village’s religious faith, community, but ultimately life and death.

It’s not hyperbole to say that a church ultimately symbolises life and death. For example, in the Catholic faith, you enter a church as a baby to be baptised, as a child to receive communion and confirmation, as an adult to be married, and if one is lucky with the time allotted to them here on Earth, as an elderly person for the ultimate final ritual - a funeral.

Being a resident of Kilcorney, I was struck by the story regarding the damage caused to St. Nicholas’ church by Storm Ophelia in 2017.

I remember the day well. We ourselves, were avoiding sheets of iron flying off sheds we had at home. Word got around later that evening that the church roof was badly damaged. I drove down to the village to see for myself and well.. it sure was. As you can see above, a third of the roof was gone. In the subsequent months, meetings were held to discuss the repairing of the roof. The initial question was would it be the damaged third of the roof that would get redone or would the

whole roof get an overhaul. The latter option was agreed upon.

It took time - two years in fact but there was a lot of waiting on insurance and gathering funds.

In the meantime, the locals used the community hall as a place of worship. All the while, work was carried out on the roof by Below: You can see me at the top of the scaffolding around the time of repairs in 2019. Friends of mine had a bereavement in their family recently. While attending the funeral, I said to one of them that while I am not a religious person, one thing about religion I do respect is what I mentioned at the beginning; ritual. A lovely wedding or the funeral of an elderly person, celebrated by their children, grandchildren, in-laws etc is a beautiful thing. Kilcorney Church is complete once again.

Who’s to say how many more rituals will occur within its walls?

Who knows how many storms will head in its direction too? Covid 19 put a complete halt to proceedings that all of us are only coming out of now. All I do know is that the spirit the people of Kilcorney, showed in rebuilding a vital landmark of faith and community, will definitely be ready to weather any more storms that comes their way.

A mass was held to re-open the church which was celebrated by Bishop William Crean and concelebrated by former priests in the parish who served in Kilcorney. Are You Getting Enough Protein?

The recommended daily intake of protein for adults is around 50g but for people who do a lot of physical exercise higher intakes are recommended. Older adults and those with a chronic illness also benefit from taking extra protein.

The “ Cyber Apostle of the Eucharist”

During the month of October, we celebrate the feast days of some extraordinary saints. Some of the list includes St Francis, St Therese, St Teresa of Avila, St. John Paul 2, and St Faustina who gave us the Divine Mercy devotion.

In October, we also celebrate the feast day of a young Italian man, Carlo Acutis. During his short life, he had an amazing devotion to the Eucharist. His extraordinary life and witness give us all great hope for the future of our Church.

When Carlos received his first Holy Communion at the age of seven, he fell in love with the Eucharist and never wanted to miss Mass ever again. Carlos went to confession often and prayed the rosary daily, which he said was “the shortest ladder to climb to Heaven.”

Carlos referred to the Eucharist as “his highway to Heaven”. His mother had only been to Mass three times in her life but she was captivated by her son’s devotion to the Eucharist, and this led to her conversion.

Carlos regularly prayed before the Blessed Sacrament, Jesus truly present in the Eucharist and he allowed Him transform his youthful heart. He used to say “if we get in front of the sun, we get suntans, but if we get in front of Jesus in the Eucharist, we become saints”.

As a result of regular prayer before The Blessed Sacrament, Carlos was able to reach his full potential and become the person that God created him to be. Carlos said “The more Eucharist we receive, the more we will become like Jesus.”

The summer after his 14th birthday, Carlos created a website detailing an array of Eucharistic miracles. He has included 136 miracles that occurred throughout the world in history.

Most Eucharistic miracles involve incidents in which the Eucharistic host has turned into human flesh and blood. Many have been scientifically examined and approved by the Church. Through these miracles, Jesus shows us in a real way that He is truly present in the Holy Eucharist.

Carlos was concerned by people growing distant from the Church and the sacraments, and he wanted to bring them back. His website, www.miracolieucatistici. org, is a call to shake consciences, and many people throughout the world have had their faith strengthened by his work.

Carlos couldn’t understand why stadiums were full of people and churches were empty. He would say, “they have to see, they have to understand” that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist.

Carlos understood that “we have a foretaste of Heaven” on Earth when we receive the Eucharist.

Carlos died from a brain tumour in 2006 at the age of fifteen. As he was dying of leukaemia, he said, “I am happy to die, because I

lived my life without wasting even a minute of it on anything unpleasing to God”.

Blessed Carlos Acutis was beatified in Assisi on the 10th of October 2020. The Church claimed he interceded from heaven in 2013 to cure a Brazilian boy who was suffering from a rare pancreatic disease. Cardinal Agostino Vallini said that the “love for the Eucharist was the foundation that kept alive his relationship with God” and that “he had his gaze turned towards Jesus”.

O God our Father, we thank you for giving us Carlo, a model of life for young people, and a message of love for all.

You made him fall in love with your son Jesus, making the Eucharist his “highway to heaven.”

You gave him Mary as a beloved mother, and you made him, through the Rosary, a cantor of her tenderness.

Receive his prayer for us.

Look above all upon the poor, whom he loved and assisted.

Grant me too, through his intercession, the grace that I need (mention your intention).

And make our joy full, raising Carlo among the saints of your Church, so that his smile shines again for us to the glory of your name.

Amen.

What is holding you back from exercise?

For many of us, the limits we put on ourselves when it comes to exercise are self-imposed and limits that we create in our own heads.

We tell ourselves that we are not into exercise so it stops us from trying any exercise.

We tell ourselves that we are too unfit to attend a class so go home in the evening instead and sit on the couch.

We tell ourselves we will never be as fit as someone else and so don’t even try to improve

ourselves.

These are all stories that we tell ourselves.

I had a lady recently who is coming to class with nearly a year now.

I remember before her first class she called me and was really nervous about attending. She was afraid everyone would be looking at her and she would be so unfit.

At her first class, no one looked at her. No one noticed how fit she was. Honestly, no one cared what she was doing!

In my classes, I encourage everyone to focus on themselves.

Not to be looking at the person next to them or trying to keep up with someone else.

Exercise is all about doing it for yourself. All you have to do is try to be better than you were the previous week.

World Mental Health Day

Monday October 11th 2021 marks World Mental Health Day. The message that we are all familiar with is ‘It’s okay not to be okay’. What is an even more important message is that you don’t have to stay that way; if you are not okay, you can get help, you should get help, and you definitely don’t need to stay not being okay.

There are lots of things you can do to improve your mental health overall, especially if you feel down or anxious. Let’s face it; we have all experienced these feelings within the last few months.

Connect Connect with friends, family, local social groups. It can be easy to

avoid the company of others when we don’t particularly like our own company. That is when we need people most, so push yourself out there. You’ll be glad you did.

Maintain a good routine Try to get enough sleep, get up early, get dressed every day, and try to eat well. Routines trick our brains into thinking everything is okay. Even when we think it is not.

Recognise your thinking styles Try to be aware of your negative thinking - the golden rule of maintaining good mental health.

You do not have to believe everything you think, so just because you think something does not mean it is true.

The Seven Sisters

I love this time of the year. The nights have well and truly closed in and the weather isn’t too bad, for Ireland anyway. Now that it is dark earlier, we are more aware of the sky above. Like old friends, there are some familiar sights that return every year.

This time of year, there’s an old friend that I can spot in the eastern sky, peeping above the horizon in the early evening. It is the Seven Sisters star cluster, also known as the Pleiades star cluster. For me, when I see it rise above the eastern horizon, it is a sure sign that winter is coming. In October, the summer sky is moving westward and gradually lower, whilst in the east, the winter sky is

beginning to make an appearance.

The Seven Sisters is a magnificent star cluster. It is visible to the naked eye as a tight, compact cluster of at least seven stars (for sure, most people have noticed it at some stage), but seen through binoculars or a telescope it is The Pleiades Star Cluster or Seven Sisters truly stunning. Galileo the cluster will be around for counted 36 stars with another 250 million years or so, his rudimentary telescope and before the stars gradually drift even a modest set of binoculars apart. transforms it.

Ringing In The End Of The Year Samhain is a fantastical time of year.

Every year we see intricate pumpkin carvings and mind boggling costumes, but at the heart of it all, tradition remains.

Traditions live on in everything from games to food, and food truly tells a story. There are a few foods associated with Halloween; pumpkins, apples, peanuts, and in Ireland, Colcannon and Barmbrack.

Barmbrack is the true divination food of Halloween.

Barmbrack or bairín breac is a

popular Halloween find, The Irish name translates to “speckled bread” and is not too different to Welsh Bara Brith. It is also named from the foam also called barm leftover after fermenting ale. This barm was mixed into the fruits and spices to make a heavy loaf.

While these days you see the “ring included” sticker, originally there were more trinkets than just this joyous one. And not all were quite so optimistic. The ring, of course, is the most popular. For some, it meant you would be wed within the year. For others, that you would be the first to be married.

A pea or stone would mean you would not be wed that year. Stones were used as peas were often mistaken for bad raisins.

A matchstick signified a bad marriage or continuous dispute.

Cloth meant bad luck for the year.

A coin, traditionally a silver sixpence, meant you would enjoy good fortune.

A bean, however was the opposite.

A thimble or button meant a life without marriage.

A rare find was a religious medal.

This was not the most common, but meant you would become a nun or a priest.

With recent health and safety regulations growing as they have, we no longer see anything but the ring in bought brack. But if you want to make your own brack and tell your own fortune, we’ve put together a recipe to do just that. Be careful when munching through; while some there’s a variety of luck and fortune up for grabs, it is never good luck to break a tooth on a trinket.

200g currants 200g sultanas 25g mixed peel, roughly chopped 25g glace cherries, quartered

Note: The fruits can be swapped out for 375 g (13oz) packet of mixed dried fruit.

The 50ml whiskey can be substituted with 50ml tea.

300ml strong tea 50ml whiskey 25g blanched almonds, roughly chopped 150g light muscovado sugar 210g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp mixed spice ½ tsp ground nutmeg ¼ tsp fine salt 1 egg, beaten 2 tbsp sugar syrup (optional)

Put the currants and sultanas in a large heatproof bowl.

Pour in the tea and whiskey then leave to soak for at least six hours.

Heat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4, and grease and line a 13cm x 20cm loaf tin.

Stir the peel, cherries and almonds into the soaked fruit.

In a second bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, baking powder, spices, and salt. Make sure you break up any lumps in the sugar.

Stir into the fruit with the beaten egg.

Add the ring and any other trinkets you'd like to add here and stir well.

Tip the loaf mix into the tin, smooth the top and bake for 90 minutes, until a skewer comes out clean. If the top looks to be going too dark or burning on top towards the end, cover with foil.

Fat Cats & Starving Dogs Out of everything chronicling the 2008 financial crisis, J.C. Chandor’s cracking drama Margin Call (2011) finally made it clear just what exactly the fat cats were up to before the good times went bust.

Ireland’s 2021 budget will have occurred before this issue so by that time we will be discussing just what treats or taxes they will have given us. The Global Economy is in a unique position right now.

Many believe that the global pandemic was really a wealth distribution reset, sending much of the wealth back to the one percent.

I don’t even know how I feel about that theory. “The rich get richer, that’s the law of the land”, says a character in Glengarry Glen Ross.

It sometimes feels like that.

EVERYONE was enjoying the good times. This is alluded to in Margin Call, which follows the key people at an investment bank, over 24 hours, during the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis.

It’s funny to be so enthusiastic about a movie chronicling the collapse of the economy but it harks back to those great dramas like All the President’s Men or The Verdict where instead of car chases and explosions, the action is people in rooms talking and it’s riveting. Chandor put together an amazing ensemble cast of talent.
