Pride of Cork honours Pride of Millstreet Nicole Ryan The Pride of Cork Awards 2021 are honouring Millstreet woman Nicole Ryan, the creator of Alex’s Adventure. In 2016, Nicole’s brother Alex took a drug known as N-bomb at a house party. He overdosed and passed away four days later.

He was just 18.

Nicole made the choice to do everything she could to avoid others experiencing the same tragedy she had. To this end, she started Alex’s Adventure, a workshop that focuses on harm reduction while also bringing awareness that not all schools and communities face the same substance misuse problems, something often overlooked in rural areas.

Alex’s Adventure goes beyond the

“Just Say No” approach; instead, it asks “why” drug use happens while putting the problem drug of that area at the centre of their education. Programmes are built specifically for each school to give the students the best possible information for their area. In tandem with this, students are taught the importance of their choices and the ripple effect from those choices both for others and their own futures. For the last four years, Nicole has travelled the country with this programme and helped countless people in that journey.

Kilbrin 2021 ASl Memory Walk

Our 2nd ever ASI memory walk was definitely one to remember for all the right reasons. There was such a great Community Spirit in Kilbrin on Sunday afternoon September 19th.

The charity event was a huge success as a large crowd of all ages gathered, and the atmosphere was electric as we set off along the beautiful scenic and historical trail of Marybrook, Subulter, Knocknanuss, and Ballyheen.

We had so many interesting stops along the way as different speakers gave us informative historical facts on the aforementioned areas. We learned all about Subletor House from Norma Taylor, Gerard O’Connell and Tom O’Riordan, and Desmond Sharp Bolster spoke about the Battle of Knocknanuss, Assolas and the Ballyheen piers.

At the end of the walk, Sinead O’Rahilly gave a quick talk about Dementia and the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland Charity. Over €3,400 has been raised to date from the Walk.

There were light refreshments, delicious home baking, and food served along with a fabulous live music session for all the walkers in Kilbrin Community Centre after the walk.

What a perfect way to end a perfect day.

Teagasc Signpost Farm Walk A farm walk under the Teagasc Signpost Farm Walk programme will take place on the farm of Tim Leader, Kilcorney, on Monday, October 11th, 2021 at 11am.

The Signpost Programme is a collaborative partnership of farmers, industry and State Agencies working together for climate action.

Photo by Neily Curtin Kanturk Foroige Club are hoping to reopen in October, and with that in mind, intend to finish their community project before Christmas as well as take a trip to Ballyhass Outdoor Centre (Weather Permitting). Some of the variety of activities they held during lockdown on Zoom and outdoors can be seen on their Facebook page, and includes litter picks, walk and talk, a variety of workshops, and a scavenger hunt. Congraduation, Ability!

IRD Duhallow’s Ability Programme held its final Ability graduation ceremony on Tuesday 14th of September in the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket, with 14 students graduating from the programme on the evening.

Jackie Kelly, one of the Ability Programmes Development Officers, welcomed all participants and their families and congratulated all the participants on all they had achieved during the year. She explained the tailored training the group took part in during the year, and how they were fantastic in adapting to a new way of learning through blended learning online and on-site during extraordinary times.

Maura Walsh, CEO of IRD Duhallow presented students with an overall Certificate of Excellence for their participation in IRD Duhallow’s Ability Programme and congratulated them on their achievements. Maura explained the importance of the programme and how Triona Dennehy, team leader, and her team lobbied hard with Maura to continue with the programme. There is a new programme called STRIVE starting in October with 15 participants.

Maura welcomes this programme and is delighted that Triona and her team can continue this much needed work for young adults with disabilities. Brighid Ide Walsh, development officer on the programme, explained how IRD Duhallow has established a strong relationship with a number of referral agencies to assist in identifying participants for the programme. She thanked St. Joseph’s Foundation, Mental Health Foundation Killarney, Employability Cork, Pathways Mallow, and Cope Foundation for their support for the programme.

local employers who supported participants with their work experience including Supervalu Kanturk, O’Callaghans Garage, the Hair Studio Kanturk, Kanturk Printers, Centra Ballydesmond, Centra Mallow, Ronnie’s Bar Kanturk, Charleville Park Leisure Club, REVAMP, DCFS, and Duhallow Community Laundry.

Cork Sports Partnership were also a great support and she thanked Kate Feeney and her team for funding towards an exercise programme for the group. A special thanks was given to all the families of participants and tutors of the programme. Tutors included, Ailbe Coffee, Dermot McNamara, Kelsey Tiernan, Damien Galvin of the Wellness Circle, Jeff Fitzgerald Fitness Coach, Artists Claire O Reilly and Jessica Baron. She thanked Nutritionist Laura O Reilly and Comedian Bernard Casey, Caroline Casey of Cork County Council, and Garda Catherine Canty for the workshops they delivered during the year.

A 50-minute video production produced and created by the Ability participants and edited by IRD staff member Tadhg Curtin

was also launched on the evening.

This showed interviews during the year with public figures in the area including; Olympians Eddie Dunbar and Michelle Finn, Michael Moynihan TD, Deirdre O Reilly, Tony Buckley, Michael Winters, Aidan Walsh, Maura Walsh and Tom Twomey.

Guest Speaker and tutor Ailbe Coffey, who has worked with the Ability programme over the last three years, finished the proceedings by congratulating all the participants and explained the importance of this programme for these young adults and their families. Following a successful three years of the Ability Programme, Ailbe is delighted that IRD Duhallow is starting the STRIVE programme. This programme will run until December 2022 and is funded via Dormant Accounts.

The STRIVE programme will aim to support young people with disabilities to improve their employability through a range of person-centred supports. For further information on our new programme please contact Jackie or Brighid Ide on 029-60633.

SICAP 2018-2022 is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development with cofunding from the European Social Fund (ESF) as part of the ESF Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

With the help of LEADER funding, IRD Duhallow’s Enterprise Development Working Group has proudly run annual Start your own business courses since 2018 in the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket.

We recognise that many entrepreneurs are experts in their own fields, but have little grounding in essential business skills such as conducting market research, price setting and financial projections, fundamentals of marketing, and book keeping essentials.

The focus of this training course gives entrepreneurs the best possible leg up when starting their own business. With a

proper grounding of the fundamentals of market research, company structure, financial projections, and fundamentals of marketing and business operations, the Start Your Own Business programme helps to ensure the economic viability of prospective entrepreneurs and to develop their business knowledge, thereby, supporting them in generating employment for themselves and others.

By supporting individuals to make well researched and well thought out business decisions, there is a marked improvement in the sustainability and viability of startup businesses. Research shows

that over 80% of start-ups fail in their first year, and training such as this can help to mitigate that.

A vibrant economy which offers local employment will result in an improved quality of life for all in the locality.

Start Your Own Business training is traditionally delivered at night time, which allows those in employment to partake in the training.

How Flexible is Your Thinking?

It is said that there is nothing mightier than the oak tree. It is known for its strength, its size, and its ability to stand strong and tower over its surroundings. It would be fair to say that it is indeed mightier than most, certainly mightier that the palm tree, in both size and strength.

But in life, we cannot avoid the storms - so what happens to the oak and the palm when the storm hits? The wind batters both treesthe oak in all its glory and might can be inflexible; if it cannot fight the wind, it can only fall. The palm on the other hand is flexible; it can move with the winds, it can

bend and sway as needed and will survive the very storm that knocked the oak.

Similarities can be drawn with our thinking. Rigid, fixed, and inflexible thinking can lead us to have a closed mind. A closed mind can stay strong only until the storms in life hit. As soon as it faces the storm, it takes a battering and eventually, a knocking. An open, less rigid, and tolerant mind-set can weather all of life’s storms by adapting and bending.

When we feel like we are in a storm, it is important to remember that all storms end. All storms eventually run out of energy. If we try to resist the storm with a rigid

#SICAP stories Bursaries for Adult & Second chance education IRD Duhallow is providing a limited number of Bursaries for Adult & Second chance education to people living in the Cork area of Duhallow.

This funding is available through the Social Inclusion Community Activation Programme (SICAP) to facilitate access and entry to further and higher level education as well as training opportunities for adults who may not have had previous opportunity to continue or complete their education.

IRD Duhallow is aware that the contribution which education can make to social and economic change and to enhancing the everyday lives of adults cannot be overstated. It is clear that rural dwellers face many barriers when trying access to higher education

Self-Discovery: An Important Step In Navigating Change

If I were to ask you the question ‘who are you?’, what would you say? Would you have an answer?

Often this simple question leaves us stumped and for a moment we are left pondering, rattling our minds for an answer. We usually go to the old reliable information; our job, title, where we live.

However, is that really answering the question?

Are we not more than our job title, where we live, the role we play in our families?

Are we not a much more dynamic, unique human being, filled with diverse life experiences, hopes, thoughts, and ideas?

Life gets complicated and throws challenges in our way, we can, in the busyness of life, start to lose sight of all that makes us who we are. Often, we become identified with a role we play, and when that role begins to change, we can start to feel rudderless and unsure. We are in uncharted waters, knowing a new round of change is beckoning.

Perhaps, you are feeling this lack of direction and you relate to the image of a compass with its needle spinning endlessly not settling in any one point of direction.

The one thing we can be sure of in life is that change is our one, true lifelong companion. When we are feeling lost, when we get a sense of restlessness that we want something more for ourselves, or more profoundly, when we are asking ourselves, ‘who are we really?’ - This is where selfdiscovery comes in.

When I first began to explore what self-discovery meant for me, the best way I could sum it up was as a process of meeting myself for the first time. It sounds strange, doesn’t it?

But in ways, it was like that. I, like so many others, can quite easily fall into autopilot and settle into the negative mindset when things go wrong. It’s the usual negative script; that we are powerless, we have no options, we are no good, we shouldn’t try, we are just making a fool out of ourselves.

We are very good at rattling out that long list of flaws and weaknesses. However, as Vicktor Frankel’s book Man’s Search for Meaning powerfully highlights, each of us has the freedom of choice. We choose how to respond to life, to its highs and its lows.

Choice is our one ultimate freedom. Self-discovery is a choice, a choice where we choose not to bow to the limitations we often impose on ourselves. Instead we choose, we dare to imagine the possible. We decide to write out a new story of what we do well, the strengths we have, and the positives we can bring to the table. We can choose to improve our self-talk and build a positive mindset that focuses on the possible.

As a Career Coach, this is one of my sincere hopes for my clients; that they ask the big questions of themselves, to explore the possible, begin that self-discovery process, identifying their goal, the reality of now, the options available, and the will to act.

Starting 14th October, I will be working with Family and Voluntary Carers as part of a series of workshops, supported by IRD Duhallow, to unpack this selfdiscovery process with additional work on navigating change, mindset, self-talk, powerful goal setting, and preparing for a return to employment.

If you are feeling that lack of direction or that a role you have held is changing or ending and you are left with the questions, “who

am I?”, “what am I all about?”, ask yourself instead; “What one thing could you start to do today to begin getting an answer?”

I came across a lovely article written in 2012 on Psychology Today by Bob Edlestein entitled Self and Self Discovery. In this article, Edlestein refers to the importance of listening, but not listening to the outside world; instead listening to the inner self, to listen inwards.

We are the true experts in our own lives. Going inward, being in the present moment is where life is, where you are, not in the past, not in the future. It is in this moment, in the present, is where you can truly ask and begin to answer, ‘Who am I?’.

The exercise cited in the article was to ask a close friend to sit with you for a five-minute period; your friend asks you ‘Who are you?’ and you respond, (I would suggest you write your answers down), and your friend continues to ask you the question again until the 5 mins is up. The results might surprise you as you move beyond the surface level descriptions of job title and other roles you have played in your life to date, to

interests that you never pursued, thoughts and feelings of what could be possible that you never knew you had.

“What one thing could I start to do today to begin getting an answer?”

If there is one thing, I would like you to take away from this article it is this; self-discovery is possible for all of us. It can be the start of a wonderful process of not just discovering who you are, but from there will allow you to pursue courses, jobs, interests with a newfound sense of groundedness and knowing.

You do truly know you are. All you need to do is listen.

St Therese Of Lisieux 1873-1897 “The Little Flower” On October 1st, we celebrate the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux who is one of our best loved Saints.

St. Therese was born on January 2nd 1873 in Alencon, France. She was the youngest of nine children, four of her siblings died in their infancy. Her mother died when she was just four years old. She and her four sisters entered the Carmelite Order.

From an early age, she had an ardent desire to be a spouse of Christ, and on September 8th 1890, she pronounced her holy vows. Therese suffered much during her short life but it was hidden suffering, which she offered out of love for the conversion of sinners and for the sanctification of priests.

She writes “I know of one means only by which to attain perfection; Love! Let us love for our hearts are made for nothing else. I wish to give it all to Jesus”.

From an early age, she was blessed with a great wisdom and understood how God had given different gifts and graces to each and everyone by her understanding of Nature. In her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, she writes, “He opened the book of nature before me, and I saw that every flower He has created has a beauty of its own.

Just as the sun shines equally on the cedar and the little flower, so the Divine Sun shines equally on everyone, great and small”.

St. Therese lived her life in childlike simplicity by surrendering herself completely to the everlasting love of God. She learned to do all things, no matter how small, with great love. She called this “my little way of gaining Heaven.”

She had a great understanding of Scripture but had the ability to impart it with childlike simplicity.

Words of St Therese . Let us love since that is what our hearts are for. . All we accomplish no matter how brilliant is nothing without love. . A word or a smile is often enough to put fresh life in to a despondent soul. . May you be content knowing you are a Child of God. . Joy does not reside in the things about us but in the depth of the soul. . My whole strength lies in prayer. . Miss no opportunity of making some small sacrifice but do it with great love. . Nothing is small in the eyes of God. Do all that you do with love.

Shortly before her death, she felt that her mission in Heaven was about to begin, where she would bring others to love God as she loved Him and teach others the importance of trust and selfsacrifice. She promised; “when I die, I will send down a shower of roses from the Heavens, I will spend my heaven by doing good on Earth.”

Saint Therese died aged twenty four and was canonized only twenty eight years after her death.

She was declared Patroness of the Foreign Missions.

On October 19th 2007, Pope John Paul II declared her Doctor of the Church. Her feast day is celebrated on October 1st.

Microchipping Your Pet

With the wilder weather of Autumn and Winter just around the corner, along with the loud noises and bangers of Halloween and the firework season, now is the time to double check that your pets are microchipped and your details on the database are up to date.

As vets, we find that calls to the practice from panicked owners of lost dogs and cats massively increases over the autumn and winter. Pets run away and become lost after being scared by the noise and vibration of storms or fireworks. If the worst does happen and your pet becomes lost, a functioning microchip can be the difference between your pet’s swift

and safe return home and the heartbreak of a fruitless search for a beloved pet. Microchips hold a code that, when scanned buy the Gardai or a vet, connects to your contact details on a database so that you can be swiftly contacted and your pet safely returned to you.

Microchips are the size of a grain of rice, and once implanted, sit underneath your pet’s skin at the back of their neck for the rest of their lives. Placing the microchip can be done in a normal consultation with no sedation of anaesthetic required. Copious snacks and cuddles are the main tools we hold in our arsenal for effectively distracting pets during the very quick pinch associated with microchip placement. It really is as quick and painless as a normal injection – many pets don’t

Microchipping of dogs is now a legal requirement in Ireland, however this is not yet the case in cats. Despite this, we still recommend microchipping your cat, as should your cat go missing, a microchip can contribute to their safe return in the same way as for dogs. Cats deserve the same protection as dogs – don’t delay with getting them microchipped!

Ditch the fad diets

The Juice Diet. The Keto Diet. The Aloe Vera Diet.

The list goes on. And on. And on.

Many of you reading this will have tried one of the above or something like it. These diets do work. In the very short term. You are eating practically nothing, I mean, one of them makes you replace food with Aloe Vera! Your body is losing weight because you are eating fewer calories than your body needs. But what happens

when the diet is over?

Have you learned how to manage your emotions around food so you don’t overeat everything in front of the TV when you are bored?

Have you learned how to create a balanced meal that is going to keep you sustained throughout the day?

Have you learned how to change your habits for the long term so you can maintain any weight lost?

People will challenge me that fad diets do work because they are losing weight. However, the issue is what happens after the diet ends. You have not learned how to change your eating behaviours for long term success.

When I work with clients, one of the first things we look at is their relationship with food and repairing

that. We look at why someone may overeat or why someone is afraid to eat for fear of putting on weight.

Every so often, scientists announce that a large space rock or asteroid will pass within a couple of hundred thousand kilometres of Earth. The tabloid press proclaims a near miss and that we were lucky to dodge Armageddon. Headline grabbing stuff it may be, but the truth of the matter is, that it is only a matter of time until Earth experiences an impact event - when one of these asteroids makes it through our atmosphere and explodes with tremendous force creating significant damage. This was illustrated in recent weeks when amateur astronomers captured footage of a massive impact on Jupiter.

65 million years ago, a 10 km rock smashed into the Earth, throwing up a huge cloud of dust and debris that darkened the planet. This resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs and three quarters of the species alive at the time. It was good news for us however, as it eventually led to modern humans evolving.

Is there a space rock with our name on it? It’s only a matter of time In 1908, a few kilometres above a remote area of Siberia known as Tunguska, an asteroid somewhere between 50 and 200 metres across, exploded and flattened some 2000 square kilometres of forest. Luckily no one was killed, as the explosion occurred miles from any civilisation. It would have been a different scenario had the explosion occurred above a large urban centre.

In February 2013, a 20 metre ball of rock exploded 30 km above Chelyabinsk in Russia. The resulting shock wave created some minor structural damage and

blew out many windows, leading to 1500 injuries. This event was recorded by numerous sources, including many car dash cameras.

Impacts of space rocks happen on a daily basis and many thousands of space rocks make it onto our planet every year, most of them small and insignificant. A shooting star or meteor is a small piece of space rock burning up as it enters our atmosphere.

According to NASA, once a year an object the size of a car hits Earth’s atmosphere and burns up creating an impressive fireball. Every 2000 years or so, an object the size of a football field comes knocking and causes major damage. Finally, every few million years or so, an object large enough to threaten our civilisation comes along. NASA has a monitoring programme and tracks over 15,000 near Earth asteroids. We could probably deal with a potential impactor given enough time, but it is the ones that sneak up on us that are the worry.

So until we have a rapid response plan, ready to go at a moment’s notice, here’s hoping that the only meteors we see are shooting stars as they light up our night sky.

Revenge is a dish best served funny A true cult comedy, Bob Saget’s Dirty Work (1998) may have been heavily recut to make it PG friendly but it’s still absolutely hilarious.

The world lost a true comedic genius recently with the death of Norm MacDonald. I was very saddened by his loss. He seems to be the most clipped comedian on YouTube, whether from Saturday Night Live, his own chat show, or showcasing his reputation as the king of late night talk show guests.

Ultimately, he was known as ‘the comedian’s comedian’; respected by his peers even if the audience was trying to catch up. Just look at his performance at the Bob Saget Roast where he just resorted to telling lame Dad jokes, apparently going against the anticipation of what was expected, which was a far raunchier set. Nobody knew what was happening and it’s

only now that people are getting the joke. Saget and MacDonald teamed up for 1998’s Dirty Work.

MacDonald plays Mitch, a 30 something slacker who teams up with a friend to form ‘Dirty Work’, a revenge for hire business that carries out elaborate pranks for people on other people who have wronged them. It failed financially and commercially. Originally it was an R-rated comedy but was recut to be a PG13. To add to it, There’s Something About Mary came out shortly after and launched the gross-out R rated comedy. It’s felt that if Dirty Work came out after Mary, that it would have done

better financially.

It’s ramshackle, looks cheap, and its plot is ridiculous, but by God, is it funny. Norm is basically Norm ,but it’s essentially just a series of sketch show skits. Norm’s note to selfs (throughout the movie, he records little reminders for himself on a tape recorder) are hilarious, and the late, great Chris Farley has a scene with skunks that has to be seen to be believed.

It nearly gave me a hernia, I was laughing so hard. There is a channel on Youtube called I’m Not Norm that posts a host of Norm videos throughout his career. It now acts as a great archive of a talent that went too soon. RIP to a one of a kind. In times of sadness, remember one of Mitch’s ‘Note to selfs’: “Note to self - Remember, no matter how bad life gets, there is always beer.”
