COVID CASES SURGE Precautions more vital now than ever DUHALLOW has the highest ageing population in the country – so for this reason alone (and there are many) it is our duty to do all we can to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in our community.

Latest figures show case numbers are rising alarmingly, locally and nationally. In Kanturk alone, the most recent 14-day

incidence rate report shows a total of 233 cases – up from five before the Christmas period, and 85 earlier this month. There are a number of ways we can all help stop this trend before more lives are lost. g

BALLYMAQUIRKE CROSS: Banteer Lyre and Districts Community Council have requested feedback on progress for Ballymaquirke Cross.The dangers of this cross were highlighted at a public meeting locally in March 2018 and it is disappointing that almost three years and many serious accidents later at the cross that no solution has yet been implemented.

GAA DRAW: The Cork GAA draw for 2021 is now being collected, with the first draw scheduled to take place in February – prizes of €500,000 with monthly first prizes of between €20,000 and €25,000 each month and a December first prize of €100,000.

Farewell to colleague and friend Sheila

IRD Duhallow last week bid a fond farewell to Sheila Fogarty, who worked on the Community Employment Scheme from 2015 and also worked with the IRD Duhallow TUS Scheme in 2014.

Sheila was looking after the Duhallow Community Foods Service building in her

professional cleaning duties – she was very thorough in her job which was to the highest standard in Health and Safety Hygiene. Her great personality made it easy to become more than just colleagues, but friends.

Sheila did whatever was needed to be done and more, also completing Health and

Safety Hygiene courses on the Community Employment Scheme.

Community news Millstreet CS students and staff during Stand Up Awareness Week

Celebrating diversity Millstreet Community School had another successful year at the BT Young Scientists, with five groups taking part and one coming away with a 'Highly Commended' award.

MCS students didn't let the Covid restrictions impede progress this year, and that included the Young Scientists. The award winners, Anna Moynihan, Cathy Byrnes and Alex Ducey researched a project entitled 'One language or two, which is better for you?' with their teacher, Jennifer O'Donoghue.

Anna explained, "Our project is titled ‘One language or two, which is better for you?’ Essentially, when we began our project, we aimed to research the advantages of bilingualism in students aged 12-19 in Munster, as well as the obstacles that they face.

“This investigation was exclusive to those who learned a language at home since birth from one or more parent native to that country and we wished to find out the effects that having English as a second language has on a student – emotionally, academically and mentally.

“As a result of our research, our focus moved to the experience of people coming to Ireland who speak non-European languages.

BT Young Scientist 2020 award winners Cathy, Anna and Alex The difficulties faced by people coming to school who are learning English may involve feeling you must leave your heritage. People feel compelled to give up their own culture to fit into ours, the fear of being different is a worry and in a lot of cases it is easier to dress the same or to speak the same in order to integrate.

“In the coming year, we plan to create an awareness booklet which will basically be a compilation of different things to be aware of, kind gestures and actions towards new students settling into an unfamiliar environment and also some useful tips for improving these new students’ personal integration processes. We will be sending these booklets to schools in Ireland that have students coming from lots

of different countries, like our own."

MCS celebrated diversity earlier when the Student Council and Amber Flag groups marked the STAND UP AWARENESS WEEK #ComeIn – standing up to bullying and homophobia. Bullying in all its forms has no place in MCS. All in the school community, students, staff and parents, have worked together to build a community of acceptance and support for all, and dressed in the colours that make up the LGBTI+ rainbow flag on the day. The school band also held a performance 'Live at the Marquee' to celebrate the event!

Millstreet students are also taking part in other competitions, including the School's F1 challenge, using physics and engineering, as well as business skills to design and build a working F1 model car. The John Hooper Medal for statistics projects has two entrants, and the Irish Angus Beef Schools' Competition entrants are hoping advance to the next stage.

The school marked Advent with a unique video presentation with performances and reflections by students and contributions from several religions and cultures. You can watch this on the school YouTube channel.

Duhallow Career Guidance Q & A

BEING... A HORTICULTURIST JACK MURPHY is Head Gardener at University College Cork Arboretum

Considering what career path to take? This series of Q&A interviews with Duhallow professionals offers candid insights into what the job really entails...

1. What is your job like?

The work involved is quite diverse and has become more so again since UCC has been awarded green campus status. Along with overseeing the daily maintenance of the campus grounds, the way we garden is linked with the green campus concept, which is based on a commitment to sustainability within UCC. It involves the undertaking of holistic actions within the grounds of the college for the greater benefit of the environment and promotion of wildlife within the college environs.

There are 42 acres of grounds to be maintained as part of the campus. Along with a range of other green actions, we have a ‘no mow’ initiative where we are now leaving areas go uncut between March and September to encourage wildflower diversity and to develop natural habitats for pollinators. Therefore a very rewarding aspect of the role is seeing the progress we have made in promoting biodiversity since we undertook this method of gardening in 2019.

2. What subjects did you most enjoy in school/college?

Geography in secondary school and at college level I really enjoyed plant identification, plant science and garden design modules.

3. How did you arrive at your current position?

I studied horticulture and landscape design in Coláiste Stiofain Naofa graduating in 1998.

I have been with UCC since 2002 having worked with a landscaping company undertaking design work in the interim. I worked under two former head gardeners, prior to taking up the position myself in 2007.

4. Have you any regrets?

None that I can think of!

5. What do you love most?

I enjoy the fact that the job is forever evolving and very rewarding. This year the college received world wide arboretum status, which entails recognition from a prestigious global accreditation programme in recognition of the vast tree collection on campus. The iconic college campus dates to 1845 and some of the trees on campus date back as far as this time. We are always looking at new ways to improve and to further support the ecosystem, therefore the work is quite dynamic in this regard. We endeavour to make the visitor experience to campus an enjoyable one, and we put a lot of work into the appearance of the grounds.

6. What do you love least?

The positive aspects of the role far outweigh any other aspects.

7. Advice for students hoping for a career in your field?

I would advise anyone who is interested in developing a career in horticulture to remember that it is an area that can lead to many different roles whether it be growing, design, maintenance or tree surgery. I would advise people to take whatever opportunities that come their way, work wholeheartedly towards their goals and to get as much experience as possible. I would encourage people to embrace the idea of lifelong learning and to read and research as much as possible. I would suggest to people that they look at books relating to native Irish plants and wildflowers where possible and to engage with training opportunities as they arise especially in biodiversity. There have been many educational developments in the area of horticulture training in recent years, including a QQI accredited Local Training Initiative facilitated

by IRD Duhallow, so I would advise people to do their research and familiarise themselves with what is available.

DOWN TO EARTH MARY MURPHY, Rockchapel Co. Cork, is a ceramics artist Mary Murphy is a graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design with a degree in ceramic design.

Mary has always been interested in art and found her passion in ceramics after spending a year trying different creative paths.

“Ceramics to me was my way of connecting back to the earth and bringing people together, like the plates we eat our Sunday dinners on to the cups we drink our tea from. My inspiration is the coming together of people.

“My work draws from the wooden Mether, a communal feasting cup passed from generation to generation. The work is informed by old Irish traditions, although it has changed technically and traditionally but Ireland still has the same values.

“I use a traditional technique called ‘throwing’. The idea for this body of work was using a traditional technique but having a more modern design bringing the old and the new together and having them passed down to other family members.

“Ireland’s tradition is steeped in gatherings and feasts, celebrating being together and being with their community. My work has always been about family and the idea of people coming together to spend time with each other. Individuals coming together after absences, re-connecting in stepping outside of the ‘other world’.

“Simplicity, sensory homely.

FILM REVIEW: THE DEAD

By TADHG CURTIN As well as its themes of love, loss and the nature of Irish Identity, The Dead touches on the melancholy of Christmas.

John Huston’s 1987 film adaptation of James Joyce’s The Dead is as perfect an adaptation as one could achieve with a work by Joyce. The story is set on January 6th, 1904.

Married couple, Gabriel and Greta Conroy attend an Epiphany party hosted by Gabriel’s two elderly aunts, where Gabriel, upon learning of a deceased lover Greta had in her youth, has an epiphany about his love for Greta, life and death.

The party is host to other characters, notably drunken Freddie Malins and his mother, Mr Grace, Irish republican Molly Ivors, who chides Gabriel for working for a British newspaper in the midst of a rise in Irish nationalism and Tenor Bartel Darcy, who sings The Lass of

Aughram, that leads Greta to reflect on her deceased lover thus setting Gabriel’s epiphany in motion. All the while the characters dance, drink, eat, reflect...

By this time, legendary director John Huston was directing from a wheelchair, hooked up to an oxygen tank for emphysema. He wasn’t long left for this world and passed away just before the film’s release but what a swansong it proved to be.

Knowing that he was working with his son, screenwriter Tony Huston

and his daughter, Angelica, gives the viewing experience an extra quality but also the cadre of Irish talent on show is superb.

Despite its melancholy air, The Dead is still one of my favourite films to watch at Christmas. Each year returning to Julia and Kates for another party, meeting up with everyone reflecting on their lot in life and their regrets. How many Christmases do we have left? Who knows. Be thankful and rejoice at the Christmases we’ve had.

Book Review: Ireland’s Rivers

By MICHAEL O’CONNOR Project Scientist, Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP

With great excitement from freshwater enthusiasts and academics, Ireland’s Rivers was published by UCD Press last December. The book was co-edited by Dr. Mary Kelly-Quinn, a member of the Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP project steering group, who will play a leading role in IRD Duhallow’s upcoming citizen science programmes.

A comprehensive guide to river ecosystems, it would be of interest to readers across the globe, yet it never strays from the Irish context and in doing so, brilliantly captures the varied nature of Irish rivers that

makes them so unique. It was this localised nature of the book that really drew me to it. When I read the introductory chapter covering river morphology, I pictured the meandering River Allow flowing into Kanturk.

Reading John Lucey’s chapter, ‘Rivers through time’, I thought about the history of Duhallow’s rivers and all the people who must have relied on them for centuries.

Of particular interest to me was the fourth chapter on benthic macroinvertebrates as this is an area we will be exploring in the Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP to assess water quality, and it will also be the key focus of our upcoming citizen science projects (chapter fourteen

provides a very useful guide to macroinvertebrate sampling for those interested).

The authors left no stone unturned, covering everything from the life cycle and feeding strategies of river macroinvertebrates to the cultural importance of flies and nymphs to Irish anglers.

Although this book contains detailed scientific content from leading freshwater scientists, it is by no means an exclusively academic book. It is a coffee table book with colourful illustrations and pictures that could be enjoyed by any reader. This truly is a book for the people, and as emphasised in the final chapter, it is the people who will ensure the long-term health of Ireland’s rivers.

Irish Name: Scréachóg Scientific name: Garrulus glandarius Bird family: Crows Status: Local resident in broadleaf woodland Identification: Probably one of the most colourful and striking birds breeding in Ireland. About the same size as a jackdaw, with ages and

sexes similar in apearance.

The body is pale brown, with some dark streaking on the crown. A black stripe extends from the base of the bill to the neck. The throat is white. Also, has a large white rump which contrasts markedly to the black tail.

The flight action is rather weak and fluttering.

Irish Name: Pocaire gaoithe Scientific name: Falco tinnunculus Bird family: Raptors Status: Widespread resident Identification: A species of falcon. A small bird of prey with long, relatively narrow wings and tail. Has a short, hooked bill for eating meat.

Usually hovers, with a

fanned tail, when hunting for its prey. Male and female have different plumages but both have brown back and inner upperwings which contrast with dark upper outer wings. Confusion with sparrowhawk is possible but kestrel has narrower, straighter wings and flies using less gliding in its flight.

Its underparts are a bright orange-red, while the wings

and back of the head are dark blue. The back, rump and tail are a very bright, almost ‘electric’ blue and usually draw attention to a flying bird. During the breeding season, females have a small red patch at the base of the bill, which is not shown by the adult males.

Irish Name: Ceann cait Scientific name: Asio otus Bird family: Owls Status: Widespread resident – the owl species most likely to be seen in Ireland.

Identification: Bright yellow eyes and long erectile tufts resembling ears, however only serving a display

function. Nocturnal and incredibly well camouflaged, with dark shades of brown and beige in rich tawny plumage . Some potential for confusion with short-eared owl but posture more upright in long-eared owl. Wing beats silent but abrupt and glides unheard close to hedges or ground.

Many of us are using January to kick-start a few healthy habits in our lives. Some of us (myself included!) may have over-indulged a little over the festive period, and might need to shift a few pounds to feel fit and healthy again.

Now is as good a time as any to consider our pets’ health and lifestyle too – modern pets tend to share the largely sedentary, plentiful food filled lives that we do, which unfortunately means that, just as in humans, obesity is a common issue I see in practice.

It is estimated that a shocking 65% of dogs and 40% of cats are overweight or obese. As awkward and blunt as it is for me to tell you

this, if your pet is overweight, and you do not take action to safely reduce their weight back into a healthy range, you will have shaved an average of 2.5 years off of their life expectancy.

Overfeeding and treating our pets is literally killing them with kindness. Obesity also increases your pet’s risk of disease, with joint and mobility issues, diabetes,

heart disease and several cancers representing a mere fraction of the plethora of diseases your pet’s obesity will encourage.

If you think your pet might be overweight, consider speaking to your veterinary practice for advice on how to shift the weight safely.

Next time, I’ll give you a few tips on how to assess if your pet might be overweight.

Cork County Council is inviting applications from community and voluntary groups for funding under the Covid 19 Emergency Fund.

This is the third tranche of this scheme for Cork County, which is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and aims to provide a flexible and targeted approach to funding communities most in need.

There are two types of grants available under the programme: Grants up to a maximum of €1,000; and grants in excess of €1,000.

Applications can be made online at https://www.yourcouncil.ie Closing date for applications is Friday, February 5th, 2021 at 4pm. All allocated monies will have to be spent by August 31st, 2021.

Tips for weathering the winter 2021 is upon us and we are half-way through the month of January. Unlike other years, we not alone find ourselves in the middle of winter but also in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, writes psychotherapist Ger Fleming.

Some groups of people are more vulnerable than others in winter. The older members of society are one such group. In this first of two articles I would like to point out ways in which older people can help themselves through the winter months.

Winter can bring many health care challenges for older people, especially those with mobility issues.

There are also emotional risks such as isolation from friends and community and also physical risks such as falls. Here are some tips for keeping ageing loved ones safe and healthy during winter: n Keep moving – try not to sit still for more than one hour at a time,

Try to stay as active as possible even a little bit of activity can help to keep strength and mobility. n Eat well - spending more time indoors and doing more of the things we enjoy means it can be difficult to keep up the motivation to prepare meals. Try to keep a routine and eat what you can. n Get the flu vaccine – this is a very important way to protect your health this winter.

n Keeping warm – make sure your house is warm and try to heat your house to a steady, comfortable temperature. At night, keep bedroom windows closed and close the curtains at dusk to keep the heat in. n Wrap up – layering is the best way to keep warm in winter. If you are going outside, don’t forget that the temperature can drop quickly so take woollies with you. n Hydrate – drink alcohol in moderation if at all. Alcoholic drinks can make you lose heat. Drink plenty of fluids to stay well hydrated in the winter months. Dehydration in the elderly can lead to physical and cognitive problems. n Human contact – stay in contact with relatives and friends. Human contact is essential for everyone – even if it’s just by phone.

How to create exercise habits I am often asked, “What is the best type of exercise to do?”

My answer: the one you can do consistently. Boring I know, but that’s the truth.

Doing something that you dislike is probably going to fail. For a habit to stick, it needs to be something you enjoy.

To make an exercise habit stick, I believe there are three main principles to follow 1. Make it a ritual Like early morning exercise?

Have your clothes laid out the night before.

Prefer to exercise in the evening? Book a class for you when you are on your way home from work, you are less likely to make the excuse not to go when it is on your way home.

Making it part of a ritual makes it more likely that you will stick to it.

2. Book it in the diary Schedule your exercise like you would a dentist appointment.

Commit to a day and time and put it in your diary. Rope in a friend and you are more accountable to complete your workout.

3. Start small So small that you can’t fail. Start with 10 squats while the kettle boils. Go for a 5-minute walk. Build this habit for a week and then start adding on a little bit more.

And remember, little by little, a little becomes a lot.
