Try a more fruitful pursuit Our vegetable gardens take up so much of our thoughts and energy, and rightly so, if we want a sustainable harvest throughout the season then we must sow, and plant and weed, and water, or possibly drain, support and talk to our crops.

Vegetable growing can be fairly time consuming, although massively rewarding. But why do we so often overlook the food plants that can be equally as rewarding but with a fraction of the work and effort?

I’m talking obviously about fruit!

Even the most ardent veg hater won’t be able to resist a sweet and juicy strawberry, or crunchy apple off the tree.

Fruit is a winner in so many ways. It is split into two groups.

Top fruit, which are the tree fruits, including apple, pear, plum, cherry etc and soft fruit, including bushes such as blackcurrants, canes, like raspberries, and herbaceous plants like strawberries.

Fruit is so much easier to grow than vegetables. For a start all our fruit plants are perennials, once planted they will live for years unlike our vegetable plants which we eat each year and have to plant afresh.

“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree” – Theologian Martin Luther (1483-1546) of February, however this is also governed by the weather, so this year having been such a cold spring I think there is just time for you to add a few productive fruit trees and bushes to your garden in March.

Top fruit can be bought bareroot at this time of year which will reduce the cost. They are all grafted trees, which allows you to choose the final height and spread of the tree to suit your garden. Remember, apples need a pollinating partner or two. Cherries and plums are self-fertile.

Fruit bushes can also be bought bareroot at this time of the year, as can strawberries and even rhubarb. These must be planted as soon as they arrive as you do not want to let their roots dry out.

March can be a very good month for pruning your apples and soft fruit bushes. Make sure there is no frost forecast and aim to prune the trees before the buds start swelling.

Apple trees are great to practice on if you are unsure of your pruning technique as they are very forgiving trees, and you are

unlikely to cause them serious damage.

The general rules of pruning are to begin with the 3 D’s. Start by removing any dead, diseased or damaged branches, then take out any branches that are growing inwards towards the trunk of the tree. The aim is to maintain an open cup shape that will allow for full sunlight and good ventilation.

Lastly, shorten the branches by no more than a third, cutting to an outward facing bud each time. This will encourage the development of fruiting spurs on the branches, which will then bear fruit.

This method can be applied to all fruit trees and bushes, however stone fruit, such as plums, damsons, cherries, apricots etc must only be pruned in the summer when the sap is flowing.

This is to prevent silver leaf disease which these trees are prone to.

Then sit back and wait for the beautiful blossom in May, and watch the bees busy at their work pollinating your trees. It won’t be long before you are enjoying the fruits of your labour.

Community Response Communities in Duhallow have always been resilient in coming together and getting things done but we all now need to come together more than ever before, to support each other and get through the pandemic that is Covid-19.

Ireland’s National Action Plan on COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has tasked local development companies like IRD Duhallow to work closely with the Department of Community and Rural Development to coordinate the community and volunteering response to the current public health emergency.

For the Duhallow Region IRD Duhallow is seeking your support. We want to harness the energy and generosity of people who have come forward to offer support to people in the community who require assistance and advice.

By co-ordinating this approach for the Duhallow region we will be able to ensure that a coordinated, safe and reliable volunteer support network is available to those in need

and that they know who to contact for advice and support. This will help to complement much of the voluntary work which is already starting to take place locally.

We would ask that ALL community and voluntary groups in the region would contact us to let us know what they can do and are doing in their own communities and across the region. Also, If you know of people willing to volunteer

please urge them to contact us so we have suitable volunteers in place if and when the need arises in Duhallow. This will ensure that there is a blanket of support for the Duhallow region and will help us to identify quickly where there are gaps and address these.

Mindfulness techniques

By CHRISTINE O’RIORDAN (BA) Counselling & Psychotherapy In this time of stress and uncertainty it can be difficult to find the right way to stay balanced and emotionally regulated.

We have found ourselves in a position within which we have never been before and so feeling lost and unsure is realistically to be expected. So what can I do to help myself you may ask?

We have probably all heard about the theory of mindfulness in some way, shape or form in recent years. Some of us will have more experience of the concept than others but right now that doesn’t matter. Whether your knowledge of mindfulness is vast or nonexistent is unimportant right now. What is important to know is that there are some very easy ways in which any one of us can develop an easy and helpful mindfulness practice.

Put very simply, the concept of mindfulness can be explained as the practice of staying present with the current moment as it happens.

Allowing yourself to feel any feeling that may come with that moment and doing so without any judgment or criticism of yourself.

This will take some practice but it is certainly something that we are all more than capable of.

Opposite is a very simple practice you can do yourself at any time when you may be feeling anxious or disconnected.

Five senses practice Notice 5 things you can see: Look around you, pick things you may not normally notice, like a crack on the wall or the lining of the dustbin.

Just listing five things without any further investigation into their placement or presence Notice 4 things you can feel: Bring your awareness to four things you are currently feeling physically, the texture of your trousers on your legs, the sensation of the shoes on your feet or a cold breeze on your face Notice 3 things you can hear: Take a moment to really listen, pulling different sounds away from one another so you can really distinguish them as they are

Notice 2 things you can smell: Bring your awareness to the smells that you normally filter out, be they pleasant or not so pleasant Notice 1 thing you can taste: Finally, try to get a sense of something you can taste in your mouth, maybe a taste left over from earlier or maybe you might take a drink of something to help you really get an awareness of something you can taste in this moment.

The more you practice, the more benefit you will experience from mindful exercises, so start by doing this a few times in the week and build it up from there.

Isolation brings to mind punishment by solitary confinement, whereas cocooning paints a picture of self caring and nurturing. Cocooning comes from the natural world of our bees and the dictionary defines it as to ‘envelop in a protective and comforting way’. So all of us who are advised to do so, are now ‘cocooning’.

Families are reaching out to each other and supporting each other.

We can really be wonderful when we take the time. Time to talk to each other on the phone, time to email each other and even taking the time to sit down and write a letter. In these stressful times how lovely it would be to get a letter.

There was a time when it was not uncommon to hear someone singing or whistling as they worked or even when out walking. It was a very cheery sound and wouldn’t it be lovely to hear it again. It would cheer us all up and lighten our hearts. In all our lives there are so many things we plan to do ‘someday when we have the time’. Well maybe the time is now.

Kindness and generosity of spirit takes thought and time and now we have plenty of both. Maybe now is the time if there is a family rift or old grudge between people to let it dissolve and evaporate. How trivial are old sores now in this new order. Did we ever think that concern for the environment and Brexit could be so totally wiped out.

Matters that were convulsing the world just a few weeks are now no more.

This new reality has focused us all in one direction. Nothing focuses the mind like mortality.

But we can be so grateful that our very young are not in the greatest danger and also that we are facing into the summer months when the good light will lift our spirits and we can go out into the great outdoors.

Cocooning and caring and sharing at a safe distance is the new order. And if we all sing from the same hymn sheet by helping our wonderful health care workers in caring for ourselves and others we will one day look back and be proud of how great we were during this crisis.

A message from Sergeant Mark Daly, Kanturk Garda Station An Garda Síochána has established a COVID-19 National Co-Ordination Unit operating from Garda Headquarters under Deputy Commissioner Twomey, Policing and security to co-ordinate and manage a strategic Garda response to this dynamic situation.

An Garda Síochána is in the process of hiring additional vehicles to provide additional mobility to our members nationwide to provide increased community support and community engagement across the country.

These ‘contingency’ vehicles will be used to maintain personal interactions and where needed to assist and support people, which may include collecting medical prescriptions, attending hospital appointments and other supports they may need. They are not ‘primary response vehicles’.

Here in Duhallow Kanturk District Garda Station is actively supporting

local initiatives in communities to ensure that those who are most vulnerable and isolated are supported.

Sgt Mark Daly commended “the local voluntary efforts of all communities who have stepped up in this crisis to help their neighbours.

“Duhallow is an extremely rural area and it is times like this when community spirit means the most.

“There are many community

support groups in our area and we are only more than willing to support these initiatives.

“We as an organisation do not want to miss out on the most vulnerable in society who may now be captured by these organisations during such a crisis.”

In line with national guidelines, he continued to urge’ families, neighbours and community groups to engage with people in line with ‘social distancing’ guidelines’.

As an organisation, Gardaí across the country are being asked to actively identify those persons most at need, particularly those with limited local family or social support. In these cases An Garda Síochána will assist.

YOU ARE Helpline providing advice and support Duhallow Community Food Services (DCFS) has expanded its meals on wheels service as well as providing takeout meals for anyone in the wider Duhallow region, in response to the current crisis.

Meals are being delivered Monday to Friday on six different routes across Duhallow along with the option of taking extra chilled meals also. A meal costs €7.50 for a dinner and dessert and is dropped safely to the front door of each client by DCFS delivery drivers who are following strict health and safety procedures. All drivers have protective clothing and all vehicles are disinfected on a daily basis which is very reassuring in this time of uncertainty.

DCFS delivered 38,000 meals in 2019 and were anticipating to hit

Food, laundry and telephone contact services expanded

39,000 meals in 2020 but with the Covid-19 crisis expected to place unprecedented demand on the rural meals service DCFS stands to be one of the main vehicles for older people and vulnerable people to access a warm, nutritious meal.

Orlaith Thompkins, Manager of DCFS, confirmed that her team has the capacity to increase the volume

of meals they are delivering on a daily basis to meet the growing demand and commended all her staff who are so willing to work to deliver such an essential service in a rural area.

She said: “Our delivery drivers have developed a great rapport with our clients over the years with many now requesting we deliver some

Millstreet support group here to help Millstreet C.V. Support Group is a volunteer community group set up to help people who fear being exposed to the COVID-19 virus or who may have to selfisolate. They may have the virus or have been in close contact and as a result are confined to their homes.

The group consists of almost 20 volunteers so far. We have two vans and an array of personal skills. We can provide assistance by organising shopping and delivery of groceries, etc. All our services are totally free to the community.

If the pandemic develops and the requests for assistance change, the group will evolve to meet these new demands where possible. A mail drop of this information to every home in our area has been organised.

More volunteers would be extremely welcome.

Meals on Wheels service for Millstreet The Millstreet Meals on Wheels service is available for anyone who needs it.

All food is prepared in Millstreet Day Centre and we operate the service five days a week. You can order a hot dinner for as many days as you like, delivered to your door from Monday to Friday for just €6 a day.

A variety of meals are served throughout the week and the staff will endeavour to facilitate individual tastes when preparing meals. Please see our menu for next week below.

Walkway: Under the 2km exercise rule the walkway in Freemount can

only be used responsibly by people living within a 2km radius. People can only walk together if they are from the same household unit.

Everyone must strictly respect other users’ social space. If all users walked in the same direction, anti clockwise, start at the gate and face towards Charleville direction.

This would minimise people passing each other. If needed, use the wider concrete area to pass people. Thank you all and stay safe. And in these most strange and unexpected times, please try and remember that you are not stuck at home, you are SAFE at home.

Our knowledge of this disease is growing on a daily basis, and here I'll try to give you a little information on what we know so far about how Covid-19 relates to our pets.

First and foremost, you can breathe a small sigh of relief – there is currently no evidence that dogs and cats can become infected with Covid-19. So luckily you do not need to attempt to maintain social on its surface. Having pets around at a time like this is beneficial for our mental health – they are merrily oblivious and are probably delighted that we are around the house more than usual in an attempt to curtail our social activities. That eagerly wagging tail or gentle purr can help to ease the worry a little – in fact, we know that stroking a pet is proven to help lower blood pressure and reduce stress.

The Lady and the primroses

By RAYMOND O’SULLIVAN You see one little clump smiling out of a hedge, then another, and suddenly all the hedgerows are party-coloured with primroses.

We call them primroses, from the Latin prima rosa (the first rose), even though they do not belong to the rose family at all. But that's another story.

A much anticipated early spring flower, it symbolises femininity, youth, new beginnings, new life...

According to plant-lore they were brought to Ireland by people returning from Tír na nÓg, the legendary Land of Youth. A bloom for young lovers, in the Victorian language of flowers they say, “I can’t live without you”.

There is a very, very tenuous connection between primroses and Newmarket Court or the James O’Keeffe Institute, headquarters of IRD Duhallow. Probably of interest only to nitpicking nerds and those

The Primrose League was an organisation for spreading Conservative principles in Great Britain and it was the first political organisation to give women the same status and responsibilities as men. Among its declared aims were: “To uphold and support God, Queen, and Country, and the Conservative cause”. It was founded in 1883 and had a number of branches in Ireland.

Lady Mary Aldworth of Newmarket Court was the convener of the Mitchelstown branch and her sister-

in-law, the Countess of Bandon, held the same position in Bandon.

The photograph of Lady Mary Catherine Henrietta Bernard, first child and eldest of six daughters of the 3rd Earl of Bandon, was taken by the pioneering French photographer, Camille Silvy in 1861. She was 24 years old at the time. Two years later she married Colonel Richard William Aldworth and moved to Newmarket. A formidable woman by all accounts, she still figures largely in local lore. She “shuffled off this mortal coil” just before the primroses bloomed one hundred years ago, in January 1920, at the age of 82.

Grants deadline extended In light of Covid-19 and the sheer impact that this has had on normal community and organisational life, the decision has been taken to extend the deadline for the Commemorations and Creative Ireland Grant Schemes, originally set to close on 26th March 2020.

Applications can now be submitted under these schemes up until 12 noon on Thursday, April 23rd 2020.
