Gardening tips by Rachel Budd, Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Community Garden

Prepare but don’t rush in March should be a busy month in the garden, hopefully the weather has picked up and a few sunny days really begin to inspire us to get started.

The ground is still very wet and cold though, so do be careful not to rush it and damage the soil.

Remember, there is no benefit to sowing or planting into cold wet soil, wait until it has warmed up and your plants will grow much faster.

This usually means not planting anything in the vegetable garden until May. The exceptions are of course onions and potatoes, which must be planted straight into the ground.

Traditionally, early potatoes are planted on St Patrick’s Day, and maincrop on Good Friday, however I would delay planting until conditions improve.

You can plant earlies until well into April and maincrop in May if necessary and they will overtake in growth those which were planted early into cold wet ground.

Plant your earlies about 12 inches apart, maincrop 18 inches, with more space if you are in a blighty area and give them a good feed of well-rotted manure.

Traditionally, early potatoes are planted on St Patrick’s Day necessary, no longer though or they won’t bulb up sufficiently.

You can still be getting ahead whilst waiting for conditions to improve. Most vegetable plants benefit from being sown in module trays and given some protection from the weather.

You should be really busy in the greenhouse or polytunnel now, sowing trays of cabbage, broccoli, kale, swedes, salads, beetroots and chard, peas, leeks, celery, herbs etc.

Leave beans, squashes and sweetcorn until April, but you should have all your tomatoes and peppers underway by the middle of March at the latest if you want them to ripen their fruit.

Don’t sow too many seeds at once, it is much better to stagger sowings of things like lettuce and beetroots as you don’t want them all ready at the same time.

Outside the rhubarb should be coming up rapidly, and should have been covered in February if you want to force it. Either way it will benefit from a good feed of well-rotted manure as it is a hungry plant. You should be cropping it from the end of March until midsummer, but remember to only

take a few stems from each plant at a time.

If you are growing asparagus, the new spears should be emerging from the soil. These will need protecting from slugs and harvesting regularly as they will grow very fast.

Brassicas such as purple sprouting broccoli and winter cauliflowers are finally coming into their own and kale that has been standing all winter will produce deliciously tender young leaves and flowering shoots at this time of year.

Always harvest broccoli and kale shoots by hand, if it doesn’t snap easily it will be too tough to eat.

Once the brassicas are in full flower they are not so good to eat, but the bees really love them so leave them in the ground until you need the space for your new crops.

Irish Community Rapid Response are committed to providing safe, effective and timely emergency medical care to those seriously injured or ill in Ireland, through the provision of a Community Air Ambulance, a network of volunteer doctors and specially equipped Rapid Response Vehicles strategically placed around the country.

The preventable loss of a child’s life in 2006 was the catalyst that led to the formation of Irish Community Rapid Response. Galvanised by the tragedy, members of the community embarked on a mission: to expedite the delivery of professional A&E care to life threatening emergencies in rural or disadvantaged areas.

Since 2008, ICRR has developed its network of volunteer doctors and it also has ten Rapid Response Vehicles (RRVs) nationwide that complement the existing National Ambulance Service model. The Volunteer Doctors are tasked via 999/112 call dispatchers at the National Emergency Operations Centre, and when available, they attend serious, life-threatening emergencies in their own locality, either on foot or in their own vehicles or in one of the RRVs. Ireland’s first charity funded Helicopter Emergency Medical

Air Ambulance is in need of a boost

The vital service needs $2m a year Service (HEMS) was launched in 2019. Based out of North Cork, ICRR’s Community Air Ambulance is tasked through the 999/112 system as part of the national emergency response framework.

This Air Ambulance offers a vital lifesaving service, providing fast access to advanced clinical interventions at the roadside by highly trained pre-hospital emergency care medical personnel.

Most critically, the Community Air Ambulance can bring the casualty to the hospital that best suits their lifesaving needs, not just the closest geographically. From its base in North Cork, the ICRR Charity Air Volunteer doctors crew the Air Ambulance

Ambulance can put a 25,000km2 area within 20 minutes of emergency medical care. In its first month of operation it completed 56 missions, proving the necessity of the service and justifying its place alongside our state run emergency services. The Air Ambulance is expected to perform 500 life-saving missions per annum and to be largely funded by public donations.

The National Ambulance Service tasks the HEMS through 112/999 calls to its National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC).

However, this is a communitybased, charity-led service and it needs to raise a minimum of €2 million annually from the public to remain operational.

There are 19 charities running similar Air Ambulance Aircraft in the UK, all funded through public donations.

A song for the soul g By DONAL HICKEY

Is there anything better than a good song to give you a lift on a wet, dreary day?

There I was on St Patrick’s Day looking out the window and listening to church bells ringing at 11am – an attempt to bring a smidgeon of joy to what was the most lonesome national feast day we’ve ever had in Ireland. The coronavirus was putting a damper on everything.

And then I heard the haunting lyrics of a special song. It was that superb sean nos singer, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, from the Dingle Peninsula, with her very own rendering of Sweet Kingwilliamstown.

Like many of our great songs, it’s about the pain of emigration and most appropriate it was for the day when people all over the world with the tiniest drop of Irish blood in their veins celebrate (with the exception of 2020!) with gusto.

Titanic

It’s the story of an exile leaving his native village on the Cork/ Kerry border, then known as Kingwilliamstown but now Ballydesmond. The author was Danny Buckley who survived the Titanic disaster in 1912 but was not so lucky in World War One. He was shot in the trenches of France in October 1918, a few days before the war ended.

All that is a story for another day, however, so let’s concentrate on the song for now.

Danny, who was born in Boherbue but moved to Kingwilliamstown after the death of his father at a young age, is believed to have penned the words in New York, not long after his rescue from the ill-fated Titanic in April 1912.

It’s a short song, best sung

Not only is it one of the best traditional songs to come out of the Duhallow/Sliabh Luachra region, it is also among the best of the genre nationally. And definitely a personal favourite.

I’ve heard it sung lustily in Ballydesmond pubs like Johnny D’s, Denny Matty’s, Bob’s and a premises which has been closed for many years, Kerins’.

“Will I no more gaze on that shore or o’er those mountains high Or stray along Blackwater’s banks I strayed but when a boy Or watch the sun o’er Knocknaboul light up the heather brown Before it flings its farewell beams o'er sweet Kingwilliamstown.’’

And it’s only proper to conclude by remembering the recentlydeceased Mary (Matty) Lenihan, of Ballydesmond, a fine singer who could do justice to any song. May she rest gently.

Pet Corner

Love of all creatures great and small Welcome to the very first Pet Corner g By JANE PIGOTT – a series of regular articles about GP vet & Consultant Veterinary Cardiologist pets! First, let me introduce myself.

My name is Jane Pigott, and I work as both a GP vet and a Consultant Veterinary Cardiologist in the town of Newmarket in the Island Wood Veterinary Hospital, and also in Millstreet Veterinary Group Hospital in Millstreet. I’m also the resident vet on C103 radio every Thursday just before lunchtime.

The most common question I get asked as a vet is ‘what is it really like?’. This question is usually same; surprises and challenges are closely followed by, ‘did you always always around the corner! To be want to be a vet?’. Being a vet is a truthful, I never imagined working great privilege – the opportunity to as anything else; with both of my help animals (both large and small) parents being vets, our house was and their owners is something I always full of chat, stories and never tire of. However, this privilege sometimes even the smells of a life also comes with great responsibility, working with animals. From spendand the work can be stressful at ing my early years running around times. You can be certain that as a the house after our ancient corgi vet, no two days will ever be the ‘Juno’ with syringes full of water

attempting to ‘cure’ her of whatever ‘disease’ I had ‘diagnosed’ her with that day, peering over the edge of an operating table as my parents performed another life-saving surgery, I was always eager to get stuck in.

As I grew a bit older, I used to delight at the chance to leap out of bed at 4am to accompany my dad Michael as he went out to assist cows calving on freezing cold farm call-outs during the Spring. It is safe to say that I was charmed by the profession from the very beginning, and I’m pleased to say that the enthusiasm has never left me.

Over the coming issues, I hope to share a little bit of that enthusiasm, so that you can learn the how to help your pet live a long and happy life as part of your family. If there is a topic you would like me to cover, feel free to let me know via email at janethepetvet@gmail.com.

Volunteers make Boherbue all the more beautiful Boherbue features some lovely examples of Irish vernacular architecture that are well lookedafter. Sometimes we overlook the importance of these buildings when we are so used to them but the fact is they are disappearing all over the country and they are such an important part of our heritage.

The planted area in front of the Garda Station looks very well with lots of good flowering perennials so important for our pollinators and

400th anniversary of Newmarket’s name Anacrohan is the first recorded name of Newmarket as it appears in a Papal Tax in 1291.

It translates into modern Irish as Eanach Creatháin, a trembling swamp or marsh, generally believed to be where the creamery and old railway station now stand. Later it evolved to Kilmacroghan, the ‘Kil’ element referring to a Cill or church, most likely on the site of the Protestant Church, or Cultúrlann MacAmhlaoibh, as it is now called.

Records are sparse but in 1494 a Donnchadh MacAmhlaoibh is recorded as the Vicar. At that time

This is the very first time the name Newmarket ever appears on any document, official or otherwise. So 2020 is an auspicious year in the history of the town marking a unique event, the 400th anniversary, not of its founding, but of its renaming.

Grow skills in horticulture g By RACHEL BUDD Have you ever considered horticulture as a career? For those that like the challenge of working outdoors, horticulture is a career path that is sometimes overlooked. It is a wide ranging industry, with four main career paths: n Landscaping is a common route for horticulturists to take. This can involve running your own small business, maintaining and installing private gardens or commercial and business environments. Landscaping incorporates installing hard features such as paving, fencing, kerbs, walls etc with planting schemes designed to best enhance the local environment for both client and local wildlife. n Nursery production and retail often both come together in the form of a garden centre establishment.

Although most garden centres now buy in their plants mainly from Holland, there is a very large scope for the development of Irish grown plants, particularly trees. This is increasingly important in light of diseases and alien species that arrive on the back of imported plants. For anyone with the vision, patience and passion, establishing a nursery business would be eminently rewarding. n Sports ground maintenance is big business. This is a specialised area, that can be developed from a basic horticulture course. Golf courses particularly are big business in Ireland, and the knowledge and expertise that goes into caring for the greens and fairways is highly sought after. n Food production is probably the most important aspect of horticulture. In the not too distant past, market gardens and locally produced vegetables would be a common sight, and everyone would have grown their few spuds and cabbage for the house. Selling produce from IRD Duhallow’s Kitchen Garden; inset, plants being tended to in one of three polytunnels becomes even more important that the knowledge of how to produce our own fruit and vegetables is not lost, and with increasing supports for organic growers, it is an area where people passionate about the quality of their food can carve out a niche for themselves.

IRD Duhallow’s Horticultural Training Initiative is the natural place to embark on this career path.

Established since 2016, 41 people so far have gained internationally recognised awards at QQI Level 4 and 5 enabling them to take up employment, go on to further training or set up their own business.

Set in the extensive grounds of the James O’Keeffe Institute in Newmarket, facilities include three polytunnels, an established Kitchen Garden, from which organic produce is sold every week throughout the growing season.

Each participant is also allocated their own allotment plot to produce crops for their own table.

Plant propagation takes place in the large, 60’ teaching tunnel, with various systems and methods ensuring a good grounding in the skills needed to raise young plants for sale. Participants will also have the chance to sell plants that they have raised on the Plant Sale

day, which has become an eagerly anticipated community event.

Landscaping projects undertaken include stone, brick and block work, with paving and timberwork also included. Site assessments and choice of planting schemes is also very important, and the maintenance of lawns and flower beds is a valuable part of the course.

Work experience placements are a very important part of the overall programme, and have contributed directly to employment after the course for several participants.

We have links to local golf courses, landscapers, organic farms and public gardens such as Muckross in Killarney and Blarney Castle and gardens.

The next Horticulture Initiative programme will be commencing on 6th April and will run for 44 weeks.

It is a free full time course, aimed at (but not exclusive to) those in receipt of a social welfare payment.

Short-eared owls nesting in Duhallow?

Short-eared owls are known to hunt during the day Most owls are nocturnal, actively hunting their prey in darkness.

However, there is one species of Irish owl that you may see hunting during the day, the short-eared owl.

Adult short-eared owls can be identified by the black steaking on their body, very small ‘ear’ tufts and yellow eyes.

The colour of the eyes tells us a lot about their habits: Those with dark brown or black eyes are nocturnal hunters; those with yellow eyes mostly hunt during the day, and those with orange eyes hunt both at night and during the day.

The forward-facing eyes of the short-eared owl are nearly as large as human eyes and are immobile within the eye sockets. For this reason, owls need flexible necks, as they have to turn their entire head to change views. They have the same number of vertebrae in their necks as most mammals and can move their heads 270 degrees in either

direction (nearly all the way around!). Most other bird species have their eyes on the sides of their heads allowing them to see sideways and partially backwards.

Owls, on the other hand, have both eyes in the front which enhances their depth perception, perfect for feeding on small mammals like voles.

The short-eared owl is a scarce winter visitor throughout Ireland and an extremely rare breeding species, with the majority of records from Co. Limerick but breeding has also been suspected in counties Kerry and Cork and has become more regular in Co. Antrim in recent years.

However, breeding has not been confirmed in the Republic of Ireland since 1985 (in Co. Kerry). It is of conservation concern in Ireland and is Amber-listed due to its small breeding population.

The number of short-eared owls breeding within Ireland is difficult to assess because they favour remote upland areas. They nest on the ground and are usually well camouflaged. Young birds often stay near the nest area for a short period even after parental care has stopped. This allows them to build up body reserves and possibly improves foraging skills in a familiar hunting area.

Eventually they become more independent and move away. Even within easily accessible, known owl habitat, there has been a lack of consistent survey effort. Estimating population size is further complicated by migration patterns because wintering, migrating and resident bird populations overlap.

Keep vigilant to see if we can find a pair nesting in Duhallow!

Duhallow 10 Miler best ever The Duhallow 10 Miler 2020 was the first sellout club event ever for Duhallow AC with a record 399 athletes taking part in spite of challenging weather conditions Top honours went to men’s winner Hiko Tonosa of DSD AC, who crossed the finish line at 50:28, and women’s winner Linda Grogan of Dundrum AC who came in at 1:02:17.

A spokesperson for the Duhallow AC said: “What a day we had for the third running of our Duhallow 10. We can control a lot but having four seasons in one day and concern over Coronavirus on top of this made conditions a lot more difficult, but I think we ticked most of the boxes.

“A very special thanks to each and every athlete who made the journey to Newmarket from all over Ireland.
