Gardening tips by Rachel Budd, Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Community Garden

Benefits of soil preparation We are still waiting – not very patiently – to start the 2020 gardening season.

This has been a very wet and cold February, and that shows no sign of changing so wait we must.

Remember, there is no benefit in trying to work cold, wet soil – you will only damage the structure.

This is particularly important to heavy clay soils, which predominate in this area.

A clay soil is a difficult soil to manage. It holds water tightly and so is very prone to waterlogging, conversely in a hot summer it will dry out to the consistency of concrete, developing large cracks.

The general rule of thumb is not to work any soil that is sticking to your boots. Unfortunately for us, that can rule out a large part of the year. It is an important rule to observe, however.

The reason that clay soil is such a difficult soil is that it is made up of a high proportion of the smallest soil particles, less than 0.002 mm. This means that they hold water due to the capillary attraction of the tiny spaces between the clay particles. Therefore, they drain slowly and take longer to warm up in the spring.

Clay soils are easily compacted when trodden on while wet, and heavy machinery can cause immense damage. It is however a

Clay soils can be improved in the short term by the addition of sand or grit to open up the structure, however the best long term solution is to add organic matter such as compost, manure, leaf mold or seaweed. This will open up the structure to allow drainage and encourage earthworms to convert the organic matter into a rich loamy soil ideal for plant growth.

Practical solutions to avoid the compaction of the soil and increase drainage include the construction of raised beds. Although these are usually considered as exclusively

used for vegetable growing, they can be very beneficially used for flowers and indeed trees, particularly fruit trees.

A raised bed can take many forms. It might be a permanent bed edged in timber, like the beds that we have in the therapeutic garden here at IRD Duhallow. These beds are easy to work and manage through the growing season, and can be covered for the winter, although there is obviously a cost in setting them up and maintaining them. A raised bed can simply be a mound of soil, suitable for an individual tree, or a larger area for planting flowers.

In a very wet and waterlogged garden this will give your plants an advantage, and prevent the roots from rotting in a very wet soil.

Growing vegetables in ridges is again a raised growing system, designed to keep the roots out of the wet soil, increase drainage and allow the soil to warm up faster in the spring.

The benefit of all of these systems is that you don’t walk on the raised bed, so you are not compacting the soil and adding to the problems of a clay soil.

Furniture given a new lease of life Duhallow Furniture REVAMP has been in operation since January 2016 and is providing a range of in-demand services to the community and in particular to disadvantaged individuals and groups in Duhallow.

In addition to the wide offering of good quality second-hand furniture for sale, Duhallow Furniture REVAMP provides a collection and delivery service, encouraging the general public to have their furniture recycled and diverting such items from landfills.

A repair, restoration and re-upholstery service is also available and proving extremely popular, and with the addition this year of professional pneumatic tables to the workshops, REVAMP has been able to extend greatly the range of repairs it offers.

Environmentally friendly Continually putting efforts into improving our environmental impact, REVAMP has diverted over 130 tons of unwanted furniture from landfills and redistributed over 125 tons to the community.

By reaching out to more households in the region, Duhallow Furniture REVAMP is becoming a household name when it comes to furniture recycling, restoration and second hand furniture sales.

With its expanding reach, REVAMP will be in a position to offer further employment and training opportunities for vulnerable people in the area and the youth unemployment challenges.

One of the principal aims of Duhallow Furniture REVAMP is to repair furniture items with as little waste as possible and with a strict adherence to using a minimum of 85% reuse goods and materials in its overall operations.

Quality goods and services Duhallow Furniture REVAMP was the first enterprise in the country to be awarded the Re-mark, Ireland’s Reuse Quality Mark of Excellence. The Re-Mark was established by Community Reuse Network Ireland (CRNI), through the EPA Green Enterprise funding, to address consumers’ concerns regarding the quality and safety of reuse goods.

REVAMP also participated in producing a promotional video which is now used by CRNI to show other enterprises the benefits of the Re-Mark.

A second lease of life Several pieces of furniture are left in REVAMP’s good hands in conditions similar to the chair pictured above. They quite often need a full deconstruction before restoration work can commence.

After giving a new finish to the wood, another reconstruction takes place for the springs and upholstery.

Kilbrin GAA stages play Kilbrin GAA are delighted to announce that they will once again be taking to the stage this spring with a three-act play.

Jimmy Keary 'I’m the One for You' written by Jimmy Keary tells the story of Dorrie Sinnott, who does a bit of cleaning for widowed farmer Gerry O’Malley and has her eye on him. But

complications arise because a farming neighbour of Gerry’s, Jack O’Dowd, is trying to romance Dorrie. Then Gerry meets colourful divorcee, Ruth Hickey – and a chaotic love quadrangle develops.

The play will run over two weekends: 27th, 28th and 29th March, and 4th and 5th April.

A night not to be missed – be sure to pencil it into your diary.

How to ace that job interview The day of your job interview has arrived – your stress levels rise and your mind races with thoughts. This is the time when you stop yourself and ask what should I be doing now.

You need a plan to make the most of the hours beforehand and to ensure that you remain calm and confident. Below are some tips on the best way to pass these hours: Review your CV: It is important to know your CV inside out. Read over it and match it up against the job description for the role. Know your previous roles and duties and be able to talk about them.

Arrive early: Allow plenty of travel time as few things can shake you more than arriving late to an interview. Enter the building around 10

Have questions ready: Usually at the end of an interview the applicants will be asked if they have any questions about the position.

Have a list of questions ready and you won’t feel caught out.

De-stress by doing something that relaxes you. Staying calm allows you to stay focused on how best to respond to questions.

Stop rehearsing: You don’t want to use this time to over-prepare or

rehearse responses, which can tend to make your conversation seem scripted and not authentic.

Remember, the interview is a conversation between you and the interviewer. Believe in your own abilities and the interview will take on a flow of its own.

If your schedule on the day of the interview is tight due to school runs etc, you could take some time the night before for some of these steps. It also pays to plan ahead on your route to the interview and what you want to wear. All that can be done a day or two ahead.

This will allow you to focus on creating a positive mindset and clear head just before you head in to ace the interview.

Commemorating life of An tAthair Peadar Carriganima Community Development is organising the centenary celebrations for An tAthair Peadar Ó Laoghaire. An tAthair Peadar, who was born in the townland of Liscarriguane, spent his formative years here. He was a renowned Gaelic scholar and a champion of the spoken Irish of the people. He wrote several works, and his novel Séadhna was the first novel in modern Irish. He died in March 1920.

The commemoration begins on Friday, March 20 with an opening ceremony and a gathering of musicians in ‘The Pub’ from 8.30pm. Representatives of Carriganima Community Development will speak. Tim Joe O’Riordan will be the anchor musician, but all others are very welcome to join in.

On Saturday, March 21, there will be a guided bus tour to sites associated with An tAthair Peadar, including Carrignacurra Castle, Carraig na Madraí and Liscarrigane (the family homestead). The bus departs the village at 12 noon, and return at 4pm.

Prior booking is essential via Eventbrite or Google Tour An tAthair Peadar.

At 6pm, Rt Rev Msgr James O’Donnell will lead a concelebrated bilingual Mass, before which he will bless a commemorative plaque to be installed in the Church.

After Mass, there will be a social gathering in The Pub. Murt Kelliher will lead musicians, others welcome to join in.

The community has, under the stewardship of James O’Leary, compiled a book ‘Ár Scéal Féin’ – on genealogy, heritage, history and folklore from the wider locality over the past 100 years. This will be formally launched after Mass with copies on sale on the night.

So much to do and see at Kanturk Arts Festival Kanturk Arts Festival 2020 will be officially opened by writer/ journalist Breda Joy on Friday March 13th at 7.30pm in O’Callaghan’s Toyota Showroom, Earl Street.

There will be a cheese and wine reception, music and the presentation of prizes to the winners of the International Flash Fiction Competition for adults and children and Kanturk Credit Union Schools Art competitions.

Running until the 17th, the festival has a very full programme. Over the weekend, ‘The Invited Artists Exhibition’ based in O’Callaghan’s fine showroom will be open to the public to browse and buy if they wish.

We are delighted to have artists of the calibre of Jessica Baron, Lynda Horgan, Clare Hartigan, Bernadette Tuite and Marian Sheehan Ahern exhibiting.

An eclectic mix of workshops takes place over the weekend.

If you’re interested in crime writing, then the Trades Union Hall from 10am-1pm on Saturday is the place to be when Cork based crime novelist, Kevin Doyle, will be covering the essentials of crime writing.

Finally, join us for a relaxing evening of music, songs and stories at the Rugby Club at 8pm.

HEROINES Celebrating the achievements of three inspirational women International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated on the 8th of March every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights around the globe.

It is a fitting time to remember some of Duhallow’s most famous and inspirational women, among them Irish and international suffragette Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington, Legion of Mary missionary Edel Quinn and Credit Union pioneer Nora Herlihy.

Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington, who was born Hanna Sheehy in Millhouse, Kanturk in 1877.

As one of our most accomplished Duhallow-born women, in 2005 a life-sized monument depicting Hanna with a ballot box, was erected in her honour by IRD Duhallow’s Women’s Forum in Kanturk Town Park around the site of the old Mill Wheel beside where the Sheehy home stood.

Hanna was an outspoken suffragette, born into a highly political family. Her father, David Sheehy, was an Irish party MP and her uncle Eugene, a priest, was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood.

From a very early age in her life Hanna believed fervently in women’s rights, even to the detriment of her relationship with her conservative father, who always worked against her.

In 1900, Hanna met the republican pacifist, Francis Skeffington. He integrated Hanna’s surname with his own when they married in 1903.

Their son Owen was born in 1909. The union of two radical, progressive thinkers was a touching one as they were completely

devoted to each other.

In 1908, Hanna and Francis and their friends Gretta and James Cousins founded the militant ‘Irish Women’s Franchise League’ to fight for women’s right to vote and for women’s citizenship to be included in the Home Rule Bill.

Hanna went to prison in 1912 after a window-smashing protest against the refusal of the Irish party to support votes for women, and was imprisoned again in 1914. Ironically, her father was an Irish Party MP. In 1916, her husband Francis was brutally murdered by Captain Bowen Colthurst because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. This left Hanna even more determined: During the Easter Rising she carried supplies and messages between outposts.

Hanna was an energetic public speaker with remarkable integrity.

While still a young mother she travelled across the United States promoting the Vote for Women as well as other women’s rights.

She was an astute militant and radical intellectual who hoped for a “generation of new, strong SheehySkeffington women”.

She was one of the most remarkable of all the activists produced by revolutionary Ireland.

A speaker of extraordinary acumen and discernment, she was well versed in international as well as Irish national affairs and was influential in literary, political and feminist movements.

In the end, Hanna was simply worn out by her lifestyle. She died in April of 1946.

Edel Quinn, born in Castlemagner in 1907, was a fearless missionary If you are in the Kanturk region, take time to drop into Kanturk park, entrance beside Centra, and visit the monument honouring one of Duhallow’s greatest women, who was born and spent her earlier years near the spot.

Edel Quinn was born in Castlemagner on 14th September 1907.

As a girl her ambition was to enter a contemplative convent but she was prevented from doing so by ill health.

At the age of 20 she joined the Legion of Mary in Dublin and gave herself entirely to the Legion apostolate. In 1932, seriously ill, she spent a long time in hospital but decided to resume legion work.

In 1936 she was appointed Legion of Mary envoy to establish the organisation in East and Central Africa. Working alone and battling

Funds for War of Independence and Civil War Commemorations Cork County Council, in recognition of the importance of the War of Independence and Civil War and acknowledging the enthusiasm that exists within the County to commemorate the centenary of this defining period of Irish history, has announced the opening of the County Cork Commemorations Grant Scheme 2020.

The County of Cork played a most pivotal role in this four-year period of Irish history that in the county alone saw the loss of over 500 lives. Many of the events spanning the period of 1920 to 1923 have great local significance, several having national and even international significance.

In County Cork during 1920 there were close to 100 significant War of Independence incidents including close to 20 ambushes alone, resulting in over 50 fatalities.

That year in history and this year in centenary commemoration, Tomás Mac Curtáin from Mourneabbey in North Cork was assassinated and his successor, Terence McSwiney who had been a TD for mid County Cork in the First Dáil, died after 74 days on hunger strike.

GRANTS 1920 in County Cork saw the most significant Kilmichael Ambush, which resulted in 20 fatalities; the taking of the Military Barracks in Mallow and the official name change from Queenstown to Cobh in July 1920, to name but a few occurrences.

Speaking of the grant scheme, the Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Ian Doyle noted: “Cork County Council has already been approached by umerous community organisations throughout the county, looking to undertake commemorative centenary events and initiatives in their locality. This fund will allow the Commemorative Programme for County Cork to do justice to the past and provide the support for those community groups, who today, seek to remember these important historical events.

“Cork County Council recognises the commitment of local communities in honouring the past and I encourage communities to consider applying to the fund.”

Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey welcomed the opening of the scheme: “The purpose of this fund is to support National Tree Week is an initiative of the Tree Council of Ireland with the support of Coillte, and this year takes place from Saturday March 21st to Friday March 27th.

It is a week to be proud of our trees; to learn about their folklore and their practical applications and to appreciate how important a healthy and diverse tree stock is.

Focus on Boherbue CS

School is a hive of activity TY and 5th Year European Tour: At midnight on 12th February 62 students, and their teachers left Boherbue Comprehensive School for Cologne, Germany. Over the four-day tour the group visited Cologne Cathedral, Marksburg Castle, the Lindt chocolate factory, Bayer Leverkeusen and enjoyed a Rhine cruise. They went bowling, to a water park and a themepark. A great experience was had by all.

Vex Robotics Finals: Many congratulations to the ‘Boherbue Bots’ who were All Ireland Finalists at the VEX Robotics Nationals.

They won an impressive three awards during the tournament: Best Design, Judges’ Award and Tournament Champions Award!

Thanks to the students and their teachers, Ms Walsh, Ms Dineen and Mr Fitzpatrick, who put in huge time and energy for this competition.

Mass for murdered men

Shows sure to give giggles Banteer Drama Group presents the hilarious comedy ‘The Maiden Aunt’, written by Jimmy Keary and directed by Tadgh O’Keeffe and Jane Pigott, on Saturday 7th March and Sunday 8th March in the Glen Theatre at 8.30pm.

The cast is made up of Eileen Cotter, Philip Linehan, Tadhg Curtin, Deirdre Linehan, Tom Stitch, Evan O’Brien, Jennifer Harvey and Cathy Bailey. Sound and lighting by Juliet Bailey, set design by Maureen O’Brien, and set builders are Kevin Angland and Jimmy O’Connell.

Mass will be celebrated in Lyre Church on Saturday, March 14th at 7.30pm for four men shot dead by British soldiers almost 100 years ago.

The photo opposite shows the monument erected at Nadd village in memory of the four men shot on March 10th, 1921.

Ned Twomey was struck down at Glen South, locally known as Dunnes Bridge. He was shot early in the morning following the taking of milk samples from a local farm and as he approached the roadside he made his way down a slope and ran to the road.

The soldiers saw him from the hill on the far side of the river and he was shot for no reason, a young lad of 18 years.

An informant had led the British soldiers to believe that there were men hiding in the area and they came prepared for murder.

Further up Nadd on the Inchemay side, four men who were sleeping in a house were awoken and ordered to run, making it look like they attempted to escape. Three were shot dead and the fourth man, Congo Moloney escaped with injuries and made his way over the hill to Kilmacrane.

The people knew his life was in danger, so they dressed him up in women's clothes and took him to the Mercy Hospital, Cork.

The British soldiers were waiting

at Leemount Cross, but Congo made it through as those who were helping him persuaded the soldiers that they had an expectant mother with them on the way to hospital.

Thankfully he survived and I had the pleasure of meeting Congo Moloney at Nadd village in 1966 when he was attending the 50th anniversary of the 1916 rising.

The three men who lost their lives that morning following the raid on the house were Ned Waters, David Herlihy and Michael Kiely. May their souls rest in peace – Billy Murphy

It is with great sadness that Newmarket says goodbye to Newmarket Motors’ dealer principal Sean Browne who sadly passed away on 25th February.

Sean was a man of great integrity, loyalty and devotion to his family, friends, customers and community. He had a great “Grá” for life and people.

Having worked in the business alongside his father from a young age, he became well known and respected as one of the main motor men in the business, loving the interactions with people and the twists and turns of business.

He continued over the years, along with his wife, relentlessly driving the business forward. His ill

health took its toll over the past few years but it did not deter him from continuing to work as much as was possible. He was a great community man, loved his home town Newmarket and all to do with it. He was a great supporter of community events, having hosted the Áit Art Exhibition at Newmarket Motors for a number of years. He fully supported Newmarket’s bid in the Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Awards 2019 and was a great supporter of this magazine.

He is survived by his loving wife Annette, adored children Cathal and Niamh, devoted father Jerry and sister Patricia and all his extended family.

Minding your mind is key All of us need help at some point in our lifetime, to achieve a meaningful goal, or to overcome a personal struggle or challenge such as stress, anxiety, a lack of self-belief or having to come to terms with a loss.

Minding our minds is the key to overcoming these challenges.

IRD Duhallow Women’s Forum recently organised a seminar entitled ‘Mind Your Mind’. This motivational seminar, delivered by former Cork hurler Dessie Fitzgerald, provided the large audience in attendance with techniques to increase their selfbelief and positivity, inspiring attendees to make the most of their lives and giving them tips to overcome their life challenges.

Dessie openly spoke about how his world was turned upside-down over a period of 14 months. This began when his brother Mike tragically lost his life. A couple of months later, Dessie was playing hurling with his local club Charleville and suffered a freak accident that led to a life-changing injury which left him paralysed from the shoulder down and confined to a wheelchair.

The injury was ‘incomplete’, which gave him hope of being able to recover some mobility. Later he lost his youngest brother James to sudden adult death syndrome.

Dessie spoke about how he was lost, emotionally, physically and mentally and knew that he had to take action to come to terms with everything that had happened.

After attending a three-day mental health workshop, he became more accepting of what had happened.

This was a key turning point in his recovery as he began to use his wheelchair less and less.

Dessie is now able to walk using crutches and has devoted himself to helping others. After studying counselling, he received a Master’s degree in Life Coaching from UCC and now works as a life coach

The death of Dan Crowley, Cools Tullylease took place recently in London after a brief illness.

Dan was a member of the Allow Rovers hurling team that won the North Cork championship in 1953. He emigrated to England in 1955 and played hurling with the Sean Tracey’s Club in London until he was 52 years of age.

Dan is survived by his wife Patricia, sons Bernard and Daniel, daughters-in-law Sally and Sarah and grandchildren, brothers Tom and Con and sisters Mary (Powers), Betty (Newman), Nora (Dunleavy) and Margaret (Quinn).

Dan’s funeral mass was celebrated in late February in London. We extend the sympathy of the parish to his family relatives and friends.

May his soul rest in peace.

Freemount Macra diary dates The regional round of the National Talent Competition takes place on Friday 6th March.

There are a wide variety of categories – ballad, group, disco dancing, set dancing, solo instrumental, solo singing, novelty act or mastermind.

On 21st March we will have a club night out and celebrate our Capers success with a night at the dogs in Curraheen Park. If you'd like to join us, please contact us. All welcome.

TALENT IN g By BERNIE COLLINS Drama promotes teamwork and socialisation, at the same time stimulating imagination and creation.

These were a few of the reasons Meelin Amateur Dramatics was set up. We felt there was a gap in our area for young people in particular to express and expand their creativity.

In the past, Meelin had a very active drama group and participated in various drama festivals throughout Munster. A drama group would give people of all ages a chance to come together to share or develop their talents. With this in mind, we set about organising our first event – a variety show!

From the get-go the enthusiasm from all ages was fantastic. Scripts were written and parts were cast.

With a wealth of local talent it made putting the show together very easy.

Rehearsals began and tickets went on sale. The show was sold out within a couple of weeks so the pressure was on.

Finally, after all the rehearsals, the big night arrived. Pat O’Callaghan was our MC for the night and opened the show. First on stage was the children’s choir with leaders Anne Marie and Sarina. They were absolutely fantastic and set the tone for the night. This choir entertains us each Sunday morning at Mass.

This was followed by a line dance from Timothy, Molly, Ellen, Hanna, Nancy, Laura and Amy. It was produced by Eleanor and had the audience toe-tapping to the lively Cotton Eye Joe. Joe Collins gave a smashing rendition of his Uncle Connie’s song – Meelin on the Hill – to great applause.

The second part resumed with the portrayal of a road trip to Dublin and a conversation between a father and son. It was realistic and comical and the audience could identify with many of the comments throughout the sketch. Denis, DJ and Stasia formed the cast of this sketch and they got a great reaction.

Next, we were back in the classroom – Catherine, Edel, Neilus and Bernie were the cast and went down well with the audience.

Why we need to protect bees Contrary to widespread believe you do not need a license to keep bees but in general it is good idea to belong to a local association.

Many of the beekeepers located in the wider Duhallow region are members of the Duhallow Beekeepers Association. They meet regularly to attend lectures, mentor beginner beekeepers and learn from each other.

Meetings are held at IRD Duhallow in The James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket, Co Cork.

Keep an eye out for the next series of meetings and lectures which will be advertised in the IRD newsletter and Discover Duhallow.

However, if like me you don’t have time to attend a beginner beekeeping meeting, you could get started with an online course, many offered completely free.

One of these is where I learned what I know about bees. After the first lesson I came to know that bees have existed for millions of years. The period over which humans have actively been involved with beekeeping is a mere moment in time compared to how long bees have successfully taken care of themselves.

Makes you wonder if we hinder or help the bees…

The consensus amongst experts worldwide is that the future of bees and their colonies is in jeopardy.

A call-to-action Irish Examiner article by Juanita Browne (Project Manager with Biodiversity Ireland) explains that 78% of all our wild flowering plants benefit from insect pollination. Without bees, Ireland would look like a very different, less colourful place.

The daunting implications of Climate Change makes it even more urgent that we work to protect and reverse declines in pollinating insects.

Here are six ways in which we

can help to reverse the decline of bees and other pollinators: 1. Go Native. Choose native bee-friendly plants for your garden.

Choose native wild flowers and flowering trees (honeysuckle and thyme, bluebells and heathers).

Native wildflowers will generally adapt better to your local climate.

The best plants for bees are often those with white, blue or yellow flowers because bees can see these colours.

2. Make sure something is in flower each season – some bee species are active all year and others only in certain months, but they all need sources of food.

3. Don’t use pesticides and herbicides – pesticides can remain in the soil long after the plant has died.

4. Mow your lawn less frequently – you may not like it but bees love

5. Support a local beekeeper – buy beeswax and locally made honey.

6. Before purchasing plants for your garden, remember not all plants are bee friendly and some can be toxic to a hive (rhododendron, azalea and staragazer lily are just a few to watch out for).
