Gardening tips by Rachel Budd, Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Community Garden

Keeping your seeds cosy We are still a way off our main seed sowing months of March and April, but for those of you who can’t wait to get started there are some seeds that you need to get underway in February if possible. These are the plants that will require a long growing season in our less than sunny climate to stand a chance of producing a ripe and shiny crop. I am talking of course about tomatoes, and their cousins capsicums, chillies and aubergines. These seeds will require some sort of heat source to get them going, as they need the temperature to reach 20 degrees for them to germinate, unlikely even in a greenhouse in February, actually fairly unlikely in my living room, but never mind. So some sort of propagator is required. There are several options, depending on the quantity of plants that you might be raising, and the facilities that you have for growing them on. The kitchen windowsill has long been utilised for raising seedlings, and in houses other than mine can provide plenty of heat. The problem with a windowsill is lack of light. It can encourage seedlings to grow leggy and spindly and lean towards the light. Placing them in a cut away box lined with tin foil can help reflect the light from the window back at them and allow

A propagating bench consists of soil-warming cables buried in sand them to grow straight. You can purchase, very cheaply, a windowsill propagator, complete with heated base and thermostat control. These provide the perfect conditions for germination, but your seedlings very quickly outgrow them, long before conditions have improved for them outside. Tomatoes get very upset if the temperature drops below 10 degrees, so it will be a while before your young plants can be placed out in a greenhouse or polytunnel, and they will grow very rapidly, soon outgrowing windowsills in the average house. If you are serious about tomato growing, you can invest in a

propagating bench for your greenhouse or tunnel. This will consist of soil warming cables buried in sand and again thermostatically controlled to produce exactly the right amount of heat. These would usually need to have some sort of lid that will keep heat in and allow light through. One that can be raised as the plants grow would be very useful. A much less technical and much more down-to-earth solution is to use a Victorian hot box propagator. This one is definitely not for the house as it consists of a wooden box filled with fresh steaming horse manure. This is then covered with a sheet of plastic and your seed trays placed on top, again covered with a transparent lid. As the manure decomposes it produces heat, and keeps your seedlings cosy. Like magic, as the manure decomposes it reduces in volume, allowing growth room for the seedlings, and provides a beautifully composted product a year later, perfect for the potatoes. This is the system we use in the polytunnels in the gardens at IRD, and the delivery of manure at the start of February is a real sign that the season is starting again.

Kanturk students succeed with their rapid rebounder ‘Rapid’ is a TY Mini-Company group from Scoil Mhuire Kanturk. The product, ‘The Rapid Rebounder’ is a sliotar rebounder that helps to improve hand-eye coordination. Rebounders are currently on the market yet ones that are smaller than The Rapid Rebounder cost double the price, at €50 each. This product works to improve hand-eye coordination as you can hit a sliotar off it with the swing of a hurley and catch the rebound of the ball. If you do not play hurling, throwing and catching a tennis ball is a sufficient alternative. The sale price of The Rapid Rebounder is €25. The group are taking part in the Student Enterprise Programme. On 12th December, the group travelled to Croke Park in Dublin to have a meeting with the Director General of the GAA, Tom Ryan. Mr Ryan showed great interest in the product and was delighted when the group gifted him a Rapid Rebounder. Mr Ryan complimented their diligent efforts, work rate and stated their product is “brilliant”.

Students demonstrating their product ‘The Rapid Rebounder’ The group also took part in the first trade fair in the Mallow GAA Complex on 12th December. Judges seemed extremely impressed with The Rapid Rebounder and fortunately the group were one of the 30 businesses to be chosen to enter

the next round in March. The Rapid team have recently been working on new products. Firstly, there is the ‘Mini Rebounder’, a smaller version of The Rapid Rebounder. The sale price of this product is €16. Secondly, there is the ‘LED Rebounder’ – this is the original rebounder that the group have attached a Dark Sensor LED to so you can be easily navigated in the dark. Focus on Millstreet Community School

Petition for international law Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is a core part of Millstreet Community School and Transition Year students have opportunities to put their studies into action. As a result of learning about how large companies exploit landowners in smaller holdings to create big plantations, the students decided to see how they could help. Research revealed the UN is campaigning to create an international law that will forbid this activity. The Transition Year GCE group, with the aid of Trocaire resources, have prepared a letter for all candidates in the election, and have sent this to the nine candidates standing in the Cork North-West constituency. In the letter they urged all the candidates, if elected to the Dáil, to help lend the Irish government's support to a draft UN Treaty on Business and Human Rights. It would make respecting human rights a legal requirement for companies. It would also make it mandatory for companies to assess

Some MCS first years with Méabh Buckley, Niamh Smyth and Eliza Smutek (all members of the TY Global Citizenship Education group). They are holding the letters that the TYs drafted and sent to all nine of the election candidiates standing in the Cork North-West constituency the potential human rights impact of their planned operations on local communities, for example, indigenous people in developing countries. These letters were accompanied by a petition signed

by hundreds of MCS students, who feel strongly about how people are exploited by some of the world’s biggest and most high profile companies. For more information, see millstreetcommunityschool.ie.

The Junior Cert/Cycle Profile of Achievement Class of 2019 Well done to our TY students Lara Berkel, Clodagh O’Keeffe, Tina Morton and Roisin Cussen who attended the CIT Iwish Campus Week. They took part in a 360 degree simulation of Sydney Harbour at the National Maritime College of Ireland, Ringaskiddy.

The Junior Cert/Cycle class of 2019 at Scoil Mhuire Kanturk received their Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA) recently. The reporting process at Junior Cycle culminates in the award of the JCPA to students and gives a clear broad picture of a student's learning journey over the three years of junior cycle. The JCPA replaces the certificate which contained the state examination results only.

Scoil Mhuire Under 14 girls and boys badminton teams both won Munster titles at University of Limerick on 23rd January. The girls team defeated Clare 6 – 0, Limerick 6 – 0 and Tipperary 4 – 1 in the final. Team members are Sarah Archdeacon, Jessica Cremin, Lana Dugdale and Louise O’Brien. The boys team defeated Kerry 5 -1, Clare 5 – 1 and Tipperary 4 – 2. Team members are Jamie Green, Macdara Neenan, Óisín O’Leary, Óisín Burke and Brion O’Keeffe. Best of luck in the All Irelands.

HOW YOUR In Ireland, all multi-seat elections – Dáil, Seanad, European and local elections – are decided through proportional representation (PR) with a single transferable vote (STV). Voting is straightforward: n You vote for candidates in order of preference. You mark the ballot paper by putting 1 opposite the name of your first choice candidate and 2 opposite the name of your second choice and so on. n What you are saying is: “I want to vote for candidate A. If the situation arises where A does not need my vote because he/she has been elected or excluded from the count, I want my vote to go to candidate B.” n Only one of the preferences in your vote is active at a time. The vote stays with your first preference candidate unless and until he/she does not need it any more (either

g

because the candidate has been elected and your vote has become one of his or her surplus votes, or the candidate has been excluded from the count). If your vote is transferred, it passes to your next highest preference for a candidate still in the running. Your vote could transfer a number of times at the same election to your lower preference candidates. First Count & Quota All the ballot papers are mixed together and then sorted and counted according to first preferences, the Spoiled papers being set aside and not counted. The Quota, the minimum number of valid votes each candidate must

get to be elected, is then calculated. The Quota is calculated based on the number of valid votes in a constituency. For example, Cork North West had a total population of 88,080 at the 2016 Census. Once those who are not registered and those who cannot vote (children, non-citizens) are excluded from the total population, the total valid electorate is left (67,589 in 2016). However, not everybody votes as the 2016 General Election saw, with a national voter turnout rate of only 65% – and of those who do vote, a significant number can be ‘Spoiled’ due to mistakes when filling out the ballot paper (395 in 2016). Once these are excluded, we are left the number of valid votes. In 2016, Cork North West had 46,958 valid votes, marginally above the national turnout rate at 67.47%. Cork North West is a three-seat

constituency and the quota required for a candidate to be deemed elected is calculated as follows (assuming 46,996 valid votes): (46,996 / 4) + 1 = 11750 ((Total Number of Valid Votes / (Number of Seats + 1)) + 1 = Quota Assuming we see similar levels of turnout in this election, the quota will not be too dissimilar from this figure. The Kerry Constituency is calculated in the same manner, simply adapted for five seats. Surplus distribution A candidate’s surplus is the number of votes he/she has over the quota. Generally, surpluses are distributed before candidates are excluded. Distribution means that once a candidate is eliminated/excluded, the other candidates on a ballot paper receive votes in proportion to percentage of votes given to other candidates. Assuming you pick ‘Candidate A’ as your No.1 choice and Candidate B as your No.2 choice, if Candidate A is elected or eliminated, your vote for Candidate A is ‘distributed’ to Candidate B. After a surplus has been transferred, any candidate who reaches or exceeds the quota as a result is deemed elected. Surpluses are distributed until the number of seats in a constituency are filled. On a more technical note, the decision to distribute is taken only if it can elect the highest continuing candidate, if it can bring the lowest continuing candidate level or above with the second lowest candidate or can qualify the lowest continuing candidate for recoupment of election expenses. Recoupment of election expenses is capped at €8,700 if the candidate receives 25% of the quota.

After a surplus has been distributed, any candidate who reaches or exceeds the quota as a result is deemed elected. Surpluses are distributed until all seats are filled. Generally, candidates must reach the quota to fill a seat but for the final seats, a candidate can be elected provided all other candidates have been elected or eliminated. But what happens if you don’t vote all the way down the ballot paper and your vote is not transferable? Votes are distributed according to the ratio of transferable votes in a surplus, if some of these votes are not transferable, they are effectively removed from the system, lowering the effective quota as non-transferable papers are

retained by the elected candidate. This has the result of final candidates being elected without meeting the quota. If all votes were fully transferable and remembering that votes are only transferred if a candidate is elected or eliminated, all those elected would meet the quota as it is calculated based on the total number of valid votes. n Note: This is intended as a general information guide to inform people on the operation of the Proportional Representation – Single Transferrable Vote (PR-STV) system used at elections in Ireland. It does not purport to give a definitive interpretation of the law on any point; for this, reference should be made to the relevant statutory provisions.

The history of badminton in Rockchapel Having procured a very fine Community Centre in Rockchapel in 1983, a few people who had previously played badminton came together and formed a club. This was a great novelty at the beginning as most people in the parish had never seen the game played. However, before long about 20 adults played the game socially two nights per week. A juvenile club was also formed and they were taught the basics of the game by Timmy Twomey every Friday evening from 6 to 9pm. This provided a great diversion for students who had spent the week studying. At that time badminton became a very popular winter game in Co. Cork. Most towns and villages had active clubs. After a few years, teams were formed and entered in both North Cork leagues and championships. While competition was keen between the various teams, great friendships were made as ‘home and away’ fixtures took place every couple of weeks during the winter months. In the late 1980s our first

18

success came when our adult team won The North Cork Shield. The juveniles were also doing very well. Marguerite O’Carroll won the County U12 ladies and partnered by Elber Twomey they won the ladies doubles. They later won U14 and U16 County Championships. The Murphy family became very talented players. John Francis and Noreen won individual County medals. Their younger sister, the late Patricia, was an exceptionally talented player; she won County and Munster U14, U16 and U18 titles. She also played on the Irish U14 team. Some of those juveniles went on to play on the adult teams and the major success of the club was in 1992-1993 when the Division 4 team won the Cork County league and championship. They continued on to win the Munster and All-Ireland titles at this level, a fantastic achievement. The same year, the Division 5 team won the North Cork league, Hosford Cup

and North Cork Shield. The following year the Division 4 team was upgraded to Division 3 and won the Cork County league and championship. Success continued but to a much lesser degree during the 1990s. The Hosford cup was again won in 1999. In the beginning of this century other talented young players came to the fore. Bríd Stack and Gobnait Murphy played for the county team. Other talented players who represented Rockchapel include Gillian and Breda Murphy, Norma and Elber Twomey, Nora Mary Curtin, Noreen B and Martina Murphy, Ann Keogh, Gabrielle Quinlan, Liam Murphy, Martin Casey, Neily Curtin, Geoffrey Collins, Timmy and Tomás Twomey, John T. Murphy, John B. Murphy, John Cronin and Brian Daly. Social badminton continued to be played up to a few years ago but the Community Centre is now awaiting a new group which will restart the club.

Fun night for Banteer Macra team

The Banteer Macra team who took part in the All-Ireland finals The national finals of the FBD Capers competition took place in Ovens on Saturday last. A fantastic night of entertainment was had and our team gave it every effort. In doing so the whole cast and crew thoroughly enjoyed the moment. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the result we were in search of but we still won in many ways. It was a very well contested final in which Bree (Wexford) took 1st place, Callan (Kilkenny) placed 2nd and our neighbours Freemount came 3rd, many congratulations folks! The best male performer of the night was won by our very own Kelvin O’Connor, a fantastic achievement to claim such a title in what many consider to be the best competition in the Macra raise up to €300,000 of matching funding to complete the project. Alarms: Banteer Lyre and Districts Community Council-Social alarms available from IRD Duhallow. If you are interested or require further information, please contact Mary O’Keeffe on 0860667822. Charity quiz nets €7.5K The Banteer community and surrounding areas pulled out all the stops in a show of support for Sarah Weathers in her attempt to raise funds for the neurosurgical unit in Beaumont hospital, which is a unit very close to her heart. Friday night’s quiz was held in The White Country Inn and showed a big-hearted community, spirit and support for her with a turnout of 44 tables, some tables doubling up to teams of 8/10 as there were no more tables or chairs to be had. The night raised over €7,500. This combined with GoFundMe donations and other donations means she is now heading for €13,000.

There was an amazing night had by all, with a great atmosphere filled with community spirit. To top it all off, quiz master Andrew Neenan kept them guessing and laughing with a wide variety of questions. Many thanks to all of you who supported, donated and helped in any way. A final account on total monies raised will follow later. The night was rounded off perfectly with music provided by DJ Alan Coughlan. Anyone still wishing to donate can do so through the GoFundMe page at www. gofundme.com/f/neurologistsection-beaumont-hospital or meet up with Sarah.

Advertising What we want from our Local Politicians for LEADER. The Irish Local Development Network to which IRD Duhallow is affiliated, has conducted independent research amongst all its members. The result is that we want specific changes to the next LEADER programme so that Rural Areas can be rejuvenated and made sustainable for people to live, work and enjoy recreation in.

On behalf of LEADER please ask your local politicians canvassing your vote for the following: Ͳ x

Simplifying and reducing bureaucracy – The promotion of Local Development Companies like IRD Duhallow to be reinstated as independent Local Action Groups (LAGs). Reducing the overly bureaucratic rules that make it so difficult for communities to make applications and draw down their funds.

x

Ensuring effective rollover to LEADER post 2020 – interim funding for continuity and core funding for the organisation.

x

Protecting the core LEADER principles – which have served rural Ireland well and are seen to be eroded currently.

x

Putting in place adequate programme supports – increased LEADER budgets: IRD Duhallow’s LEADER programme was cut by almost 70%. This needs to be reinstated not only for the communities, organisations and businesses that avail of the funding but all the local suppliers in our local towns and villages where the bulk of that budget was spent.

x

Expanded use of available EU CLLD funding – To assist more joined up thinking and planning at community level and to avoid communities having to apply to multiple organisations in order to adequately complete a project.

x

For Social Inclusion we ask that – the 50% budget cuts of 2010 be reversed so there is sufficient funds available in Duhallow to support the unemployed, lone parents, vulnerable young people, low income farm families, carers, older people, those with mental health issues and learning difficulties to reach their potential

Environment by Dr Darren Reidy, Ecologist on IRD Duhallow LIFE & EIP Projects

Threat of deadly crayfish plague Crayfish are a type of freshwater crustacean, similar in appearance to marine lobsters. In Ireland, our only native species of crayfish is the white-clawed crayfish. This species has a natural range in streams, rivers, lakes and canals throughout Western Europe. Indeed, the River Blackwater and its tributaries are designated as a Special Area of Conservation for the species. Populations of the white-clawed crayfish have declined dramatically over the last century as a result of human disturbances including freshwater pollution and destruction of habitat, e.g. dredging rivers and draining wetlands. Until recently Ireland remained one of Europe’s greatest strongholds for the white-clawed crayfish, but a new threat to Irish crayfish has begun to emerge. This threat has the potential to wipe out entire populations of the species but is invisible to the naked eye; a microscopic watermould known as Crayfish Plague. Once a river or stream has been infected by crayfish plague it is

A microscopic water mould threatens to wipe out white-clawed crayfish dispersed on the currents. The disease then spreads rapidly throughout the crayfish population, resulting in complete wipe-out. In fact, crayfish infected with the disease have a 100 per cent mortality rate. The disease is thought to have originated from an invasive species of North American crayfish that was introduced to Europe, and has been spread by water users moving between catchments. The mould only remains viable in water, but is unknowingly dispersed by water users as they move between catchments. Equipment such as boats, kayaks, wellies, angling equipment and scientific instruments that are used in infected catchments can potentially transfer the disease into an uninfected catchment if still wet. At present eight catchments in Ireland have been infected by the disease, including the nearby Deel and Maigue in Co. Limerick. This represents a significant threat to the rivers of Duhallow, particularly as salmon and trout angling commences this spring.

info@discoverduhallow.com

Check, Clean, Dry The most effective way to reduce the spread of this disease is to use the ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ method. This means that equipment should be checked for mud and debris, cleaned thoroughly and allowed to dry completely before moving between catchments, as even a wet wellie or damp net can unknowingly harbour the mould. If complete drying is not feasible, equipment should be soaked for 15min in a disinfectant such as Milton, Virkon or an iodine-based product. Items difficult to soak can be sprayed or wiped down with disinfectant. Large equipment such as boats and kayaks can be power steam washed, ensuring all areas where water pools is drained and flushed prior to entering a new catchment. Where possible entering the water at known infected catchments should be avoided. As part of the Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP project, IRD Duhallow intend to install biosecurity disinfection stations at locations in the Allow and Dalua catchments that are frequented by water users.
