MINISTER WELCOMED IRD showcases the best of Duhallow IRD Duhallow welcomed the Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development at the end of June.

Minister Joe O’Brien was introduced to the extensive staff and teams that work with IRD Duhallow. The day of hustle and bustle at the James O’Keeffe

building was rounded off with a farm visit. Between pipe bands and demonstrations, it was a day of great craic as well as an opportunity to display the projects and ongoing successes in Duhallow.

NO HORSE SHOW 2021 The Millstreet International Horse Show announced with great disappointment that their 2021 CSI2 will not be taking place.

While the Duggan family are disappointed, they said in an online statement: “To stage a show without one or more of these elements or limiting participants would go against our ‘open door’ values... to offer anything less than the full

package would not be the Millstreet experience we know.”

However, they are already looking forward to the 2022 show with the planned dates announced as 3rd to 7th August.

The Millstreet International Horse Trials (26th–29th August 21) will go ahead as scheduled, but with restricted numbers and all government Covid-19 protocols in place.

RIP CANON HARRINGTON The Donoughmore community wish to pass on their deepest sympathies to the family and many friends of Canon Michael Harrington.

During his time as curate in Donoughmore parish, he spearheaded the establishment of Donoughmore's famous annual carnival. He is pictured here receiving a presentation from Mary Brew during the 50th anniversary celebrations of the carnival in 2019 to recognise his innovation and foresight in establishing the carnival.

ordained on 19th June, 1960 and also served the parishes of Mallow, Rockchapel, Donoughmore, Coachford, Doneraile and Killeagh.

‘Giving for Grace’ plea nets €41K+ The members of the Giving for Grace Fundraising committee wish to thank those who have given so generously to a very worthy cause. In just two short weeks, the committee has raised a phenomenal €41,807.

Kilbrin NS principal Celine Hayes noted that along with the outstanding fundraising efforts, candles have been lit in several churches, prayers have been said, Masses offered and in the special Mass for Grace celebrated by Fr. Leader, it was made possible to livestream it by Peter O' Callaghan, OnTrack Film Services, who donated his time and services.

Celine said: “What is truly amazing is the level of goodwill, positivity and wonderful community spirit that has come from this fundraiser. Everyone from children donating their pocket money to pensioners calling to the school handing in money in the hope that it would help 'that little girl' has reminded us all that when needed, people are there for each other.

“The expense of treatment in Dublin can be crippling. What all your donations have done is allow the Kellehers the peace of mind not to have to worry about these additional expenses. Knowing that so many people are wishing them well and supporting them every step of this long journey provides comfort and the strength to keep going knowing you're not on your own.”

Even though the fundraising efforts are drawing to a close, the people of Kilbrin will continue to support the Kelleher family in whatever way they can – one day at a time, one step at a time.

They ask that everyone keeps a candle of hope lighting Thank you all.

IRD DUHALLOW TO HOST AGM The AGM of IRD Duhallow CLG and the Launch of the Progress Report 2020–2021 will take place on Wednesday, 28th July at 8pm in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket.

While the AGM is a legal requirement of this organisation, it also provides an important forum for all communities in Duhallow to review activities and hear about opportunities for the coming year.

However, due to Covid-19 restrictions the number to attend the AGM will be limited this year to Board Members and two community representatives per region to be notified by Friday, 16th July 2021.

Please call 029-60633 if you are in a position to attend the AGM. Only those registered can be admitted on the night.

All paid up members are entitled

to send a proxy vote on any motion being put forward or election for the AGM. IRD Duhallow relies heavily on contributions from local communities and businesses.

Teepees inspire ‘Summer Dreams’ Kanturk Arts Festival Committee has once again come up with a novel art display, bringing another unique installation to Kanturk’s O’Brien Street Park.

The ‘Summer Dreams’ project saw the erection of three twometer tall teepees as well as a beautiful display of dream catchers throughout the park from the 1st – 4th of July. The committee brought together a number of different local groups in the region including St. Coleman’s Boys National School who painted the artwork; the teepees were erected with the assistance of Kanturk Scouts & Venturers; and Kanturk Foroige designed dream catchers made of old T-shirts and yarn. The whole project was facilitated by Cork Art Link and overseen by Kanturk Community Link artists Anthony and Kate Rushinov.

Aid James in cancer battle Local man James Murphy is battling for his life. He is 32 years old and he has Stage 4 sarcoma cancer.

James has a beautiful girlfriend and a seven month old son with another baby on the way.

James will need immediate extensive cancer treatment and has been told he will be unable to work for many months or possibly as long as a year.

His brother, Dermot, has set up a Go Fund Me page to help James with his battle. As of writing this, €17,980 out of a €50.000 goal has been raised.

James’ family would be very grateful for any donations you can give as it would really help towards his medical expenses and lost wages. Every little helps.

Kanturk AFC in call for girls to join new team

Kanturk AFC has recently started a girls’ football team and is currently looking for players who were born between 2007 and 2010.

EDDIE IN SADDLE FOR TOKYO Tokyo will certainly be hit with an influx of Duhallow people this August as news filtered through this week that Banteer cyclist Eddie Dunbar will represent Ireland at the Olympics in the men's road race.

Duhallow Career Guidance Q & A

PROJECT MANAGEMENT ANDREA COLEMAN, from Castlemagner, works as a strategic project manager 1. What is your job title?

I am a strategic project manager for a company called SGS. My office is in Naas, Kildare but I work from home in Castlemagner.

2. What is it really like?

SGS is a testing, inspection, verification and certification company. They have about 90,000 employees globally in 2,600 locations across several industries such as agriculture, food, life sciences, chemical, construction, mining, oil and gas. I work in the pharmaceutical division where we provide testing to some of the top bio/pharmaceutical and medical device companies in the world, to ensure their products are safe before they are released to the market. My role is to manage some of our key customers at a global level. It involves a combination of account management, project management and business development.

3. What subjects did you most enjoy in school / college?

Science and maths.

4. How did you arrive at your current position?

I graduated from the University of Limerick in 2011 with a degree in Food Science & Health and then moved to London for six years where I worked for a company called RSSL (part of the Mondelez/Cadbury’s group, they test food and pharmaceutical products) in technical customer services and account management. When I moved back to Ireland, I worked in business development/sales for a company called Eurofins where they also test pharmaceutical products.

It can be challenging at times managing customer issues and complaints, particularly when working with different time-zones as it can cause delays with urgent items.

8. Any advice for students hoping for a career in your field?

I didn’t really have a particular career path in mind when I left school and I am very happy with where I have gotten to so far. My background is in Food Science and I ended up in pharmaceuticals so there are different journeys and paths that you can take to get into different areas. My main advice would be not to worry if you don’t know specifically what you want to do or where you want to end up. It all falls into place eventually, and you can always change your mind.

Steps to a successful CV

Usually a CV should be no more than two pages of A4 paper!

Employers spend, on average, just 8 seconds looking at any one CV so you need to keep it to the point, and save the details for the interview.

2. Presentation Have your CV presentable by using bullet points and keep sentences short. Use the graphic design trick of leaving plenty of white space around text and between categories to make the layout easy on the eye.

3. CV Content Every CV should include the following sections: Contact Information, Personal Statement, Education, Work Experience, Skills.

LEADER in the community

SPOTLIGHT ON MCCARTHY’S Serving the people of Kanturk and beyond since 1892, we are delighted to introduce our readers to McCarthy’s Butchers of Kanturk.

Jack McCarthy and his son Tim – the fifth generation of butcher in the family to run the shop – are well known for their value-added beef and pork products. McCarthy’s bacon and rashers have won international awards and their black pudding is also well regarded.

IRD Duhallow, as implementing partner and member of the Irish Development Network (ILDN) the representative body for Local Development Companies (LDCs), is delivering the LEADER Programme across North & South Cork and Kerry.

Under the LEADER Food Initiative, IRD Duhallow welcomes the allocation of LEADER funding for Jack McCarthy’s Butcher allowing the enterprise to expand its operation.

through the LEADER Programme under the responsibility of the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) and as part of the Ireland’s Rural Development Programme 2014-2020.

The LEADER Food Initiative provides financial support to participants in the artisan food and beverage sector in areas such as market development, competitiveness, and innovation as well as for the renovation and extension of production facilities and the purchasing of processing equipment.

It is with great pleasure that IRD Duhallow hosted the contract presentation with Chairperson of the North Cork LAG Cllr. Bernard Moynihan at the visit of Joe O'Brien TD, Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities at the Department of Rural and Community Development to North Cork.

#SICAPstories: Shining a light on inclusion Earlier this year, IRD Duhallow was delighted to run the extremely popular Online Women's SelfDefence Classes with Master Pat Forde of Munster Martial Arts. Get fit, get strong, get empowered was the motto of the event, delivered over two evening sessions.

Originally from Limerick City, Pat is very enthusiastic to share his skills and knowledge improving his students’ confidence, assertiveness and self-esteem.

The importance of self-defence cannot be understated and participants gladly learned about the basic principles of defending themselves in potentially threatening situations.

The Covid-19 crisis has been described as “gender regressive” from the point of view of women by some commentators. In March 2021, the Dublin based National Economic and Social Council

highlighted that women were more affected by the need to provide extra care in the home due to the closure of childcare, along with widespread shutting of schools, and services for vulnerable adults and children. The same paper highlighted an increase in domestic violence as a negative impact of the pandemic.

One student noted at the end of the workshop that she felt empowered and that she “learned so much during these very practical sessions” and highlighted that Pat referring to real life scenarios “made the training so worthwhile”.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018–2022 provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals,

community organisations and public sector agencies. SICAP 2018– 2022 is the successor programme to SICAP 2015–2017.

Administered by Pobal and funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Rural and Community Development, it also receives funding from the European Social Fund under the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

SICAP addresses high and persistent levels of deprivation through targeted and innovative, locally-led approaches. It supports disadvantaged communities and individuals including unemployed people, people living in deprived areas, people with disabilities, single parent families, people on a low income, members of the Traveller and Roma community and other disadvantaged groups.

Don’t panic: It’s just Venus

By TREVOR O’DONOGHUE In a month when NASA finally confirmed that UFOs are real, in that many sightings of flying objects remain unidentified, we turn our attention to the cause of many UFO sightings among us mere mortals: the planet Venus.

During July, Venus can be found low in the west-north western evening sky after sunset, setting 1.5 hours after the Sun. Venus is the brightest object in the night sky after the moon, is our closest celestial neighbour and sits between Earth and the Sun. Mercury is closest to the Sun, then Venus and then Earth. This means that whenever we observe Venus from Earth, it always appears next to, or near the Sun. For this reason it is known as the Morning Star or Evening Star, due to it being visible shortly after sunset in the evening sky, or shortly before sunrise in the morning sky.

Often, I am asked the question: "What was that bright object in the sky? It was really bright and seemed to be following me."

More often than not, the answer is, that is the planet Venus.

Usually stars twinkle and planets don't, but in this instance Venus is low in the sky, shining through Earth's murky atmosphere and can appear to flash and twinkle and even change colours.

Keep an eye out for it this month, particularly on the 11th when a slim crescent moon is nearby.

Even though Venus mightn't be a UFO, it is for sure, a strange place. It is a hot, rocky world where average temperatures are

425 degrees Celsius, and a runaway greenhouse effect has taken hold.

The Venusian year is 225 Earth days long and a day lasts 243 of our Earth days!

As it lies between Earth and the Sun, and shines by reflecting sunlight, it shows phases, just like the moon. If you have a telescope, see if you can track or observe these phases. At the moment, Venus appears almost full.

Reclaim school transport fees Refunds are being issued for unused school bus services from January to March of this year.

Bus Eireann, operators of the school transport scheme on behalf of the department of education and skills, are managing a refund process for families who paid school transport fees in 20/21.

Following the closure of schools to prevent the spread of Covid-19, a 31% refund will apply to all family account holders.

THE END OF AN ERA FILM REVIEW

By TADHG CURTIN Easy Rider (1969) remains an era defining work of the 1960s given that it ultimately reflects the end of it.

The 1960s saw the collapse of the old Hollywood studio system with the box office failures of Cleopatra and Hello Dolly. Made at the end of that decade, the definitive New Hollywood masterpiece, Easy Rider revolutionised a whole new way of both producing a movie for a youthful audience as well as what those movies would be about.

Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper star as Wyatt and Billy, two hippies who, after making a big score in a drug deal, travel from L.A. to

New Orleans on motorcycle, encountering characters along the way including Jack Nicholson as alcoholic lawyer George Hanson.

Easy Rider is still as fresh, cool and innovative as when it first came out. Its use of songs as score, cinematography and editing laid the gauntlet for cinema to follow. And despite its downbeat ending remains endlessly rewatchable.

When Peter Fonda passed away in 2019, I was saddened. Fonda

represented the ultimate laconic, free spirited hippy ideal and so when he died, a certain old-school ideology seemed to slip away as well. Fonda and Hopper wrote the script together with Terry Southern with Hopper directing the film. The two stars apparently fell out during production and never reconciled.

Fonda always remained a hippy liberal while Hopper became a republican.

When Wyatt says “We blew it” to Billy towards the end of the movie, it’s ambiguous but so much can be read into it. The summer of love would come crashing to a horrific end both with the Rolling Stones and the Hell’s Angels at Altamont as well as the Tate/LoBianca murders. An end was coming but the promise of the open road is still there for anyone who wants to make that trip.

Save the Kanturk Courthouse The Kanturk Courthouse has stood proud in the town since 1825, but with each passing year, it falls further and further into ruin. But could the rediscovery of a slice of history change that?

Names and dates, coded escape plans, and drawings by a jail warden were first discovered 25 years ago then forgotten until photos surfaced of the graffiti.

These photos include the messages, but also a shot of the original courtroom, still intact. As proud as it still looks, the years have not been kind: Doors are missing, windows smashed, and holes spot the roof, and every one of these forces these moments in time to face the elements, and who knows how long they can survive.

On day two of his Cork visit, Minister Joe O’ Brien made a visit to the main hub of IRD Duhallow in Newmarket.

Minister O’Brien is a TD for Dublin Fingal but he was born in Grenagh, Cork. Following his time in UCC, he moved to Dublin. His achievements and work over the years is extensive, in particular, he’s a vocal advocate for inclusion and migrant rights. He has worked with the Immigration Council of Ireland, and notably in this field, he has worked with Crosscare, one of

the largest providers of services to the homeless in Dublin.

Since July 2020, Minister O’Brien has served as Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development with special responsibility for community development and charities.

The day started with a welcome from the Newmarket Pipe Band on the steps of the James O’Keeffe building. From there he met some vital faces in IRD Duhallow; the

Afterschool kids. And they were sure to interview him!

From here, he met other key players operating from the James O’Keeffe Institute – DCFS and Warmer Homes, two essential services within the community – and had some time to take a swing at some pitch and putt.

This farm received funding from the European Innovation Partnerships (EIP) for Blue Dot Catchments, and he heard about improvements thanks to this funding, as well as how small changes help keep our rivers clean.

A TRIBUTE TO NOREEN CRONIN From the Tureencahill Active Retirement Association It was with great sadness that neighbours and friends learned of Noreen Cronin’s passing on March 29th, 2021 after a long illness bravely borne. Too short a life but she lived every minute and enjoyed her time in this world. She brought energy and vitality to anything she was involved in - be that home life, work or committees.

Noreen was born in April of 1965 to Jeremiah and Nora (Falvey) O’Connor from Ballinahulla. She attended school in Ballydesmond and Boherbue before heading to UL and College of Art, and went on to spend 11 years in New York.

Her artistic skills are still on display in Tureencahill Community Centre with an eye-catching scene from Jack and the Beanstalk. While this was always much admired, it has now taken on an even greater significance for us.

In December of 2000, she married Donal Cronin from Tureencahill, and their family was complete when their two beloved sons, Jerry and John, were born.

She was a dedicated member of Tureencahill Community Group.

In 2015, she became Child Welfare Officer of the club, and in 2019, became Children’s Officer for the East Kerry Board.

In his tribute to Noreen, Chairman of East Kerry Board Johnny Brosnan remarked “... I must say Noreen was one of the most organised and nicest individuals I have ever worked with throughout the years”.

Noreen worked in many restaurants over the years, she was a marvellous cook and she brought her artistic flair to this too. In every place, she looked out for new members of staff and took them under her wing.

While her many talents, gifts, and contributions were important, nothing could compare with her love of sports, activity, and GAA. She had regular walking routes

She attended as many GAA games as she could, but especially when her sons were playing.

Noreen was devoted to her boys, and she travelled far and wide to encourage them. She was a familiar sight on the sideline with very vocal instructions and support.

We’ve heard of super subs but Noreen was a super supporter of Kerry Football. She travelled all over on O’Callaghan’s Coaches and was a green and gold beacon in her gear, including some Gooch Cooper sunglasses!

It was with great pleasure and pride that she was able to cast her vote for Paul Murphy for Kerry Captain.

Noreen’s funeral Mass was a celebration of her life and provided us with glimpses of a bright, bubbly, loving and caring lady. She had a smile and a laugh for everyone whatever the occasion.

Numerous guards of honour lined the route from her home in Tureencahill through Gneeveguilla village to the Church.

We celebrate her life and extend our heartfelt sympathy to Donal, Jerry, John and to the O’Connor and Cronin families. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

In November 2019 there was great jubilation when Boherbue NS was granted funding from the Department of Education for a new classroom with en-suite toilets, two SEN rooms, a WC toilet and storage area. It is hoped that this extension to the school will commence shortly.

Don’t ignore lumps on your pet It’s a scary experience for any pet parent to be absent-mindedly cuddling their dog or cat and notice lump or bump on the surface of their pet’s body.

The shock of finding a lump on your pet is always a worry, and the natural question you would want to know the answer to is ‘what is it’?

Lumps and bumps are more common in middle aged to older pets, but may be seen in pets of all ages. They may vary from a small, warty looking skin mass, to larger lumps under the skin; there is a huge variety of appearances of lumps and bumps that can occur, but the important thing to note is that how a lump look or feels is not a good reflection of whether the lump is harmless, or might be something more sinister such a cancerous lump.

on your pet, the best thing to do is to visit your vet for an appointment where your vet can examine and sample the lump.

The best way of diagnosing what a lump is, and hence finding out if the lump is harmless (benign) or a

harmful cancerous lump, is for your vet to take a sample of it to send to the lab for analysis. This is most commonly done by completing a ‘Fine Needle Aspirate’, which is where a small needle is used to suck out a sample of cells from the lump to be examined under a microscope at a lab. This test can usually be completed without any form of sedation, and is minimally invasive and not at all stressful for your pet.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your vet will be able to discuss options for treatment such as surgical removal or even chemotherapy if required.

So don’t put off getting that lump sampled – if your pet does have a lump, early diagnosis and management is the best course to helping keep you pet happy and healthy.

Be patient when making changes So, you’ve decided you want to make a change – well done! Maybe you want to give up smoking, cut down on alcohol or lose weight; or to add something to your daily routine rather than taking something away – taking up jogging, knitting a jumper or learning Spanish.

Whatever it is, it is half the battle to recognise the goal, the dream.

So how do you start and how do you keep the momentum going?

The best route to take is to set a SMART goal: n Specific: Be specific about what your goal is, the clearer your details are, the better. So, for example, ‘I want to take up knitting’ could be changed to ‘I want to knit a jumper for my grandchild’; ‘I want to stop smoking’ to ‘I will begin nicotine replacement therapy next week’. n Measurable: How will you know when you’ve achieved your goal – if

A goal like taking up an exercise could be measured by how often or how far you run. n Achievable: This is very important to ensuring that you keep going with your plans. So a goal like ‘I’m going to take up cycling’ would not be started by cycling the Ring of Kerry – you would start by cycling for 30 minutes or certain distance and build on that. n Realistic: Make sure your goal is within your grasp, if you are on a weight loss journey it is realistic to lose 1-2 lbs a week, not to expect to

lose half a stone a week. If you take up running, a 5km loop is more realistic than a marathon. n Time frame: Mark your progress with time frames, set targets for monthly intervals to make your progress more visible. Charting that progress over time will give you incentive to keep going.

MANAGING YOUR SOCIAL LIFE When many of us think of social events, we think about the food and drink that will be there.

For birthdays, it's cake, for celebrations, it's drinks, and for weddings, it's three course meals.

Food will always be there. As long as we are breathing, we will need food. What lots of us need to learn to do is begin to change our mindset towards events and how to manage them. Every food and drink choice you make is exactly that – a choice.

One thing I hear a lot of people do is eat very little all week in preparation for the event in question. This can be detrimental for a number of reasons. By eating very little all week, you are more likely to overeat at the event, especially with so much food available. You are also creating a mindset of binge and restrict which

can lead to a very poor relationship with food.

Instead, allow yourself to eat normally in the run up to the event and then treat the event as an opportunity to sample some nice food without overdoing it.

FARM SAFETY AgriKids, the farm safety educational platform for children, and Flogas are coming together to launch a children’s farm safety handbook. A collection of safety facts, activities and games, the objective of this fun resource is to get more families talking and engaging on the topic of farm safety.

AgriKids and Flogas are into their second year of a partnership which has seen the farm safety topic reach more families and rural communities than ever despite the Covid-19 restrictions. Through virtual events, social media alerts and promotions, the engage, educate and empower message is still finding its way into the homes of Ireland’s 140k farm families and beyond.

Now in its 9th year, Farm Safety Week runs from July 19th–23rd 2021 and is a key focus on the farming calendar in the UK and Ireland.

To create more activity and action over the week, AgriKids and Flogas are running a series of child friendly webinar events for the Duhallow community. The events are tailored and targeted to children aged 4-7 and 8-12. Running for up to 40 minutes, the sessions deal with a range of topics from tractors to slurry and with a story time session for the younger viewers.

All those who take part will receive an e-copy of the AgriKids Flogas Farm Safety Handbook for use in their own home.
