A PARADE FOR FR JIM Fr Jim Kennelly was celebrated in a Golden Jubilee Mass on Sunday, 20th June.

With family and close friends present, he received a number of tokens from members of the community, and he received a stunning welcome along the streets of Boherbue and Kiskeam with a brass band and lines of cheering parishioners.

Fr Kennelly is well known and

well liked throughout Duhallow, and has served throughout the barony as well as beyond. His contributions are countless and the appreciation of the community made for a wonderful celebration.

There are hopes that a more public gathering may be on the cards as lockdown eases.

AFTERSCHOOLS SUMMER CAMPS The Afterschools is gearing up for a busy fun filled summer. We will be running 6 weeks of summer camps starting Monday 28th June and finishing Friday 6th August.

Themes will include Little Chefs and Artists where children will enjoy baking and cooking things from start to finish and arts and crafts. During Nature Detectives we are outside for the majority of the day exploring and appreciating our natural surroundings. We go down to the river to find invertebrates and other life in stream, we catch and release mice to allow the children to get a close look at them and learn how to identify whether it’s a bank vole or field mouse by looking at their features.

Whizz Kids is all about science experiments and computers; the children work together to research and decide on a final experiment they will carry out at the end of the

Having fun in the sun at a recent camp in Newmarket Afterschools week; they prepare a PowerPoint presentation and present it to the group at the end of the week on their experiment. The Laugh and Learn camp is led by Primary School teachers with a mix of classroom activities and games to support children with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, however, it is open to all.

Fr Jim Kennelly Jubilee

By CALEB O’CONNOR The streets of Boherbue and Kiskeam were lined with people as the brass band played in honour of Fr Jim Kennelly’s Golden Jubilee.

A native of Millstreet, he was ordained in 1971 in St. Mary’s Cathedral and he has always been held in the highest of esteem by his parishioners.

His Golden Jubilee mass was held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Boherbue on Sunday, 20th June, and present was a small congregation of family and close friends to celebrate.

After this mass, he was presented with a number of tokens, including a poem in his honour composed by bard and parishioner Frank O’Sullivan, a piece of Art on a Slate showing his life and journey through the priesthood, a special card made by Mary O’Shea on behalf of the people of the parish, and finally, a piece of ink art by Irene Ryan with Fr Kennelly’s favourite prayer inscribed ‘Jesus I surrender myself to you, take care of everything’.

Fr Jim thanked all those that influenced and supported him during his life and his 50 years in the priesthood. He made special mention of his parents, Tadhg and Mai, to whom he dedicated his golden jubilee mass.

This celebration may have been for his pastoral work, but he is celebrated by many in all walks of life. Over the years, he has been met by countless individuals in every step of life – birth, marriage, death, and everything in between – and he leaves a lasting impression on everyone he’s encountered through that time.

Following his ordination, his first parish was in Kenmare and following that, he spent 23 years teaching in St Brendan’s in Killarney, which was a very happy time for him.

He later spent another eight years in Ballydesmond before transferring to Boherbue and Kiskeam Parish.

Sport has always played a central role in Fr Kennelly’s life and he was a renowned footballer and golfer.

Fr Kennelly noted that throughout his 50 years he has met a lot of great people and has seen lots of changes in the church.

Speaking from the altar at the close of the Mass, Parish Council Chairman Ned Vaughan said that the celebrations that they would like to have and what they were allowed to have were somewhat different.

However, he added that he hopes a more public gathering can be organised in the near future so that everybody that wishes to can have an opportunity to celebrate with Fr Kennelly.

In closing, Fr Kennelly thanked everyone for all they have done for him throughout his time in the priesthood and for making the day of his Golden Jubilee one he will never forget.

Don’t miss street art Following the success of their Poets’ Trees exhibition, Kanturk Arts Festival are continuing the year with a whole new project facilitated by Cork Art Link: Summer Dreams.

With paintings contributed by St Colman’s Boys’ National School, artists Anthony and Kate Rusinov will create three two metre tall teepees that will then be erected with the assistance of Kanturk Scouts and Venturers.

“We are delighted to be hosting this event,” says Lisa Egan of Kanturk Arts Festival Committee.

“It’s fantastic that the young people of the town can once again demonstrate their artistic skills.”

Kanturk Foroige will also be contributing dream catchers made of old T-shirts and yarn. The display will be open to the public from 1st to 4th July in O’Brien’s park.

Shane makes Olympic team Castlemagner will be well represented in the Tokyo Olympics as Shane Sweetnam (pictured), along with Karlin Van’t Vennehof, will be part of Ireland’s showjumping team.

Shane said, “I am honoured and excited to have been nominated... You work a lifetime to have these opportunities and I want to thank Ali and the kids, my entire extended family and my parents who have supported me from the very beginning.”

Shane will also be joined by Bertram Allen, Darragh Kenny, Cian O’Connor and Michael Duffy.

Annmarie releases new single

Rathcoole singer Annmarie O’Riordan held a Facebook live concert on the 21st of May to celebrate the release of her new single.

Michelle all set for Tokyo Michelle Finn has ensured that the Black and Amber of Castlemagner will be on show at this year’s Tokyo Olympics following a superb performance at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, where she finished second behind Winfred Yavi of Bahrain.

Taking nine seconds off her personal best, Michelle recorded a time of 9:29:25 – the second fastest time ever by an Irish runner in the 3,000m race, Michelle Finn, of Castlemagner just one second outside Roisin when I could do it and I was McGettigan’s national record. like, ‘Please, just do it before The 31-year-old, who represented Ireland at Rio 2016, the Olympics’. LEADER in the community

Spotlight on heritage and history Since 2013 community groups in Duhallow have surveyed and published grave monuments and biographical detail from 28 graveyards.

These records have been published on the broader platform www.historicgraves.com. This website is a multimedia online resource which has been built up through the commitment, diligence and enthusiasm of committed local volunteers. This work has helped connect individuals and far flung families with their own graveyards and plots, leading to tourism benefits for the Duhallow area.

Genealogy tourists can utilise the online database to identify individual grave plots and find those same graves by using the GPS coordinates published with each headstone.

Through funding secured under the LEADER 2014-2020 programme, another vital piece of work is underway in relation to our local historic graveyards. Under the tutelage of John Tierney of Eachtra, throughout Duhallow, community volunteers will be trained in how to

John Tierney (trainer) facilitates a recording of a historic War of Independence story in the Newmarket locality under the LEADER 2014-2020 programme research, write, tell and publish their family and parish stories. This practical training has been designed to help people to learn by doing, following the journalistic methodology of who did what, where and when. Audio and video of the stories are recorded for future generations and the themes of the stories are wide-ranging, with many stories handed down from previous generations being recorded.

On the historic grave platform, it is possible to retain these stories and virtually connect them to a headstone or a graveyard where appropriate, giving people the opportunity to listen to recordings no matter what part of the world they reside in. In anticipation of further lifting of restrictions, we are hoping to continue this very important community training within the coming months.

SICAP: Training little heroes in First Aid Our highly anticipated SICAP funded Kids First Aid course was designed for children aged 8-11. We had this course on a Saturday morning during the month of May and we also organised two days in Shrone National School for primary school children.

In the 3 ½ hour sessions, children learned to deal with bumps, burns, Tutor Jerry Harrington with the breaks and bleeding, carry out CPR Kids First Aid Class and deal with choking. The class was practical and involved lots of activities topics all relevant to a child's life. He for the children to enjoy. had a lot of equipment with which the We received very positive feedback so children were able to interact and it we hope to run this course again brought it to life for them. The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018 – 2022 provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals, community organisations and public sector agencies. SICAP 2018 – 2022 is the successor programme to SICAP 2015 - 2017.

Support ‘Giving for Grace’

Kilbrin National School has thrown its support behind a fundraiser for a student diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia A local Kilbrin teacher and other staff in Kilbrin National School are going above and beyond for a 6th class student. In May of this year, Grace was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

AML is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, and is treated with chemotherapy. At just 12, Grace is looking forward to starting secondary school in Kanturk.

She loves Tiktok, her phone, and her friends.

Any hospital time is scary, but Grace is a fighter, and her family is ready to stand beside her the whole way.

Celine saw the opportunity to help and has organised a fundraiser via GoFundMe. The original goal of €30k was set with the intention to support the Kelleher family while they care for her, and in just four days, it was not only met but surpassed.

Farm safety joint effort The Irish Community Air Ambulance and Macra na Feirme have launched a joint campaign to appeal to all rural communities to exercise care as activity in rural Ireland increases during the summer months.

A busy silage season, increased traffic on the roads and more children moving about farms all combine to present an increased likelihood of serious incidents that could result in the Irish Community Air Ambulance being tasked to rural locations.

Statistics show that the summer months are the busiest for the service, with the highest number of callouts during 2020 occurring in July. Road traffic accidents account for the most incidents, with farm accidents and falls from heights requiring a regular response from the Millstreet-based service.

VIOLENT HISTORY OF QUIET SPOT Mahon’s Rock is in a secluded spot; hidden up Brandy Road outside of Aubane. A place so quiet and serene, it’s hard to believe it was a place of execution.

Brian Boru is no stranger to us, but his older brother Mathgamain (Mahon) might be a new name to some. Before Brian Boru became the Ard Rí we know him as, his brother was king of Munster.

Not everyone was fond of Mahon; some even believed him to be a usurper and his reign was rejected by too many to ignore. But those who rejected his reign also knew they likely couldn’t best him in open battle.

Thus, a plot was hatched.

Under the guise of “peace talks” with the Bishop of Cork as mediator, Donnubán mac Cathail enticed Mahon into what would become a kidnapping.

After this, Mahon was handed off

This spot in Aubane was deemed far enough from his home turf and was located between his kidnappers' strongholds. These kidnappers turned murderers that day in 976.

Dancing right to the top The Acrobatic Rock-n-Roll Irish Association (ARIA) have been celebrating and they hope to celebrate again. While it's been over two years since their last ‘real life’ competition, the recent World Rock-n-Roll Confederation (WRRC) online world cup went ahead during lockdown. Empire’s own Oliwier and Nikola are the first ever Juniors in the final for Empire, and along with Filip and Anastazja, they have placed in the top ten couples in the online world cup ranking.

Acrobatic Rock-n-Roll is a professional sport that combines dance and acrobatic elements performed by a pair of dancers to fast tempo dynamic music, generally 48-52 bpm. It first appeared in Ireland in 2015 in Mallow, Co.Cork.

Kasia Kik-Witkowska and Jarek Witkowski – former acrobatic rock-n-roll athletes and twice World Champions – created the first acrobatic rock-n-roll school called Empire. They now boast over 400 members, an ever growing attendance, and many more branches. Last year, Daria Buzykina, a coach in the sport from Ukraine, joined the team.

These incredibly hard-working kids have their next goal set in Sochi, Russia. All of the kids have the opportunity to take part in the European Championship and World Cup in Russia against over 150 different couples from 11 countries. In preparation for this, they‘ve been training five days a week to work on intensive physical training, gymnastics, stretching, and, of course, the all important routines. Ireland is still a new name in Rock and Roll acrobatics but they are paving the way for it to be a recurring one in competition.

“Our club it is more than just about sport activity; it is about teaching kids how to achieve their

But taking part has challenges outside of the physical. Tickets, visas and such a long trip make for an expensive outing, but ARIA are doing their best to make this dream a reality.

ASTROTURF FUNDRAISER

Kanturk Community Astroturf Committee are very excited to be rolling out plans for the 116 metre by 76 metre Astroturf pitch at Greenane, Kanturk, adjacent to the Coláiste Treasa sports hall.

Full planning permission was granted in 2020 on the site, and was secured by way of a long-term lease from Cork County Council with the support of the Cork Education and Training Board.

Kanturk Community Astroturf Committee was formed in 2019 by a unique collaboration between Kanturk GAA, Kanturk Rugby, Kanturk AFC, Coláiste Treasa, Scoil Mhuire, St. Colman’s Boys’ National School, Convent of Mercy Girls’ National School, Kanturk Community Council, Kanturk Chamber of Commerce, Infinity English College, Michael Moynihan TD and Cllr John Paul O’Shea.

This development will include a pedestrian walkway around the pitch with bollard lighting, a two-way vehicular access with ample on-site parking facilities and access to Colaiste Treasa’s changing rooms.

The cost of the development is estimated to be in the region of €1 million.

The committee has applied for a sports capital grant, LEADER funding and have secured a loan from Clann Credo (an organisation which specialises in funding from community projects) as well as a very welcom €20,000 already secured from Cork County Council Community Fund.

A detailed business and financial plan has been drawn up. It is based on local community support from individuals, companies, Kanturk diaspora as well as capital grants from various bodies. The pitch will also generate rental income for financial sustainability.

It is anticipated that the Astroturf development will take two to three years to complete. The committee

are planning for works to commence in late June.

The works will be carried out in three phases, beginning with groundworks including the laying down of the grass carpet and shock pad to FIFA, World Rugby and GAA standards.

The pitch will be available to all the local schools during the day and open to the local clubs and community in the evenings, week-

ends and during the holidays.

Fundraising will play a key role in getting this project over the line and it was launched on the 21st of June by Duhallow Olympian Michelle Finn.

ARE YOU STRESSED OR ANXIOUS?

By ALICE O’BRIEN Psychiatric nurse Stress and anxiety are two things that we hear a lot about. Both are very common and are reactions to aspects of everyday life, but it is important to be able to tell the difference if we want to learn how to cope with the symptoms associated with both.

Stress is a reaction to feeling under pressure. The pressure can be real or imagined, and stress makes us think that the demands of the situation are greater than our ability to cope. Stress can be short-term, like having to meet a deadline, studying for an exam, or having to pay an unexpected bill.

Stress can also be long-term, like living with a chronic pain condition

or life changes like a retirement.

Some anxiety is normal, such as when we go for a job interview, sit an exam or right now, going out and about during the pandemic.

Anxiety becomes problematic when it is out of proportion to the situation we are in, for example, if we become fearful in everyday

situations and therefore avoid situations that are completely safe.

Both stress and anxiety trigger the ‘fight or flight’ response, which prepares our bodies by increasing the heart rate, speeding up our breathing, and tensing. This is a natural response.

While stress can be handled by identifying the trigger for it and handling it, anxiety is different.

Anxiety forces us to overestimate the threat and feel like something terrible is going to happen.

The key to managing anxiety is understanding the source and reminding ourselves that we are safe, regardless of what our minds say. Anxiety and stress can be managed with regular exercise, a balanced diet, and good sleeping habits, as well as regular rest and self care.

HOW TO MANAGE A SOCIAL LIFE The country is starting to open back up and social calendars are beginning to fill up once again. A barbeque at a neighbour’s house.

Unexpected drinks with friends.

Weddings. Christenings.

It is all going on again and, if you’re anything like me, you will be delighted with all the social events!

If reducing body fat is your goal, events can create a lot of anxiety and stress. These events are usually based around food and drinks and it’s rarely vegetables and water as the options!

My advice is to view every social event in isolation and win the rest of your day that day: n Eat lots of vegetables and protein on the day of the event; n Get out for a walk or do a class to get some movement in on the day; n Drink lots of water the day of the event and the day after, especially if drinking alcohol.

And if you do overconsume at the barbeque, remember that it is just one meal out of 21 meals that week.

Where you will begin to hinder your progress is when you have a party on Friday night, you eat a slice of cake and then you tell yourself you have “broken” your diet so you continue eating for the whole weekend.

This is what then leads to overconsumption of calories and that Monday morning feeling of being bloated, lethargic and feeling the need to start again.

Artist in the frame

SPARKLING FUTURE JONAH O’SULLIVAN is more than just a makeup artist...

At just 20 years old, Ballydesmond's Jonah O’Sullivan is already making her mark on the makeup world.

As a child, she would dress up and do makeup with her mother and aunt, and this was the birth of her passion. She went on to study makeup artistry in Vanity X College Cork for a year, and took extra oneto-one lessons from her friend Joanne. During these sessions, she was treated to techniques and skills that would only serve to benefit her.

March of this year, Jonah released her own eyeshadow palette, ‘Dream Sparkles’, an event she considers the highlight of her career so far.

She was not alone in her journey.

She has been encouraged by those around her, and through all of this she’s been inspired by all kinds.

Her mother and aunt in particular were a huge inspiration when she was younger.

“They are both very glamorous,” she says, “I’ve always looked up to their style.”

As she got older, she found new inspiration from those in her field with the same passion she has for it.

Jeanette Cronin, a makeup artist herself, and Joanne Sexton, a friend, are both dear to her heart, along with her tutor, Jillian Lake.

With her palette, she’s already making tracks in the beauty world, but Jonah looks to expand her line of products, and eventually own her own business. It’s hard work and a lot of effort, but this is its own reward.

“Work hard and put in the effort because it will definitely stand to you in getting a job,” says Jonah.

SO GOOD IT’S CRIMINAL FILM REVIEW

By TADHG CURTIN 50 years later, Mike Hodge’s Get Carter (1971) is still a sleazy, brutal work and a benchmark in British cinema.

Time has not dulled the power of Get Carter. Coupled with another great British crime movie I reviewed in a previous issue, The Long Good Friday and you have an essential neo noir feature film double bill.

Based on the novel Jack’s Return Home, by Ted Lewis, it follows Jack Carter, played superbly by Sir Michael Caine, a gangster in London returning to his original home of Sheffield to investigate the supposedly accidental death of his brother,

possibly at the hands of the Sheffield mob. Caine is brilliantly supported by Godfrey Quigley, Brit Eklund, Ian Hendry and legendary English playwright, John Osborne.

Hodges incorporates his background of documentary filmmaking into the film’s style which really adds to its stark look.

Roy Budd’s fantastic score captures the film’s sleazy quality.

The dialogue hums with some of the greatest exchanges in crime cinema (“you’re a big man but you’re out of shape”), not to

mention an unforgettable description of a person’s eyes.

Critics seemed to be thrown by it at the time with its nihilistic and amoral quality, that there are no ‘heroes’ in the film. Infamously remade with Sylvester Stallone 30 years later, it completely misunderstood the understated and melancholic quality of the original. What Jack is doing is not for the noble and greater good, it’s because of an inconvenience to him and nothing else. But like all the great works that come out of nowhere, this is why they endure, letting everyone else catch up with them. Get Carter now has earned its place on great movie lists and a respect from a younger generation of filmmakers. It’s one of Caine’s greatest performances.

This is a monumental film still in terrific shape!

KEEP WATCH FOR AURORA The past week has seen my phone emit a flurry of chirps, beeps and flashing LEDs, writes Trevor O’Donoghue. They have been alerts from Twitter or from the AuroraWatch UK app. Most have been yellow alerts with the occasional amber alert, letting me know that there is a slim possibility of seeing the aurora or Northern Lights.

The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights are beautiful visual displays in the night sky. They are caused by charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere, and usually occur over the high northern latitudes or corresponding latitudes in the southern hemisphere.

I have yet to see the wonderful green and purple colours synonymous with aurora, but I have captured them photographically. I have seen faint glows and shimmers in the sky on occasion, but nothing breathtaking as of yet.

I'm still waiting for the big one, so give me a red alert and a clear moonless night and I will be out the door in a flash, camera in hand looking at the northern sky.
