PROJECTS FUNDED Four Duhallow initiatives win LEADER support IRD Duhallow as implementing partner of the LEADER programme this week welcomed the signing of four new contracts for LEADER funding totalling €144,500 in grant aid for the region.

NEW CAR FOR LUCKY WINNER Boherbue Comprehensive School had their Astroturf Fundraiser draw on Friday, 4th June at 1.45pm.

Viewers were invited to witness the event on Facebook live with Boherbue CS principal Vera Leader, as well as Kevin Roche, Garda Charlie McCarthy, and Patrick Coleman, of Colemans Millstreet, who carried out the draw.

Everyone got to find out how many tickets were in the drum; a stunning 4,268 tickets in total! There were 1,445 online tickets and 2,268 physical tickets sold.

The first ticket was drawn for the Kia Ceed and the lucky winner was Maura Mulcahy, Newmarket. The 2nd prize ticket drawn was for an iPhone 12, going to Joan Roche, Carriginima. The 3rd prize for €250 cash – from a ticket purchased online – went to Imogen Crowley.

LEADER contracts signed  Continued from page 1

The LEADER programme has been the cornerstone of the development of Rural Communities across Europe for three decades. The seven core values – Bottom up approach, Area based, Local action group, Integrated multisectoral approach, Innovation, Transnational and Financial Autonomy – all contributed to the success of the programme in targeting, supporting and helping rural communities deliver for themselves and their own localities.

IRD Duhallow, a member of the Irish Development Network (ILDN), the representative body for Local Development Companies (LDCs), who deliver the LEADER Programme across the County, have welcomed that €449,132.80, €44,348.27 and €62,712.84 will be available to IRD Duhallow for LEADER projects in North & South Cork and Kerry respectively over the next two years.

Commenting on the allocations of the LEADER funding, Chairperson of IRD Duhallow, Breeda Moynihan-Cronin said; “LEADER will give our local communities and enterprises an opportunity to respond to the emerging challenges for their areas and will support measures that provide employment and job creation throughout the wider Duhallow region. I want to encourage local communities and businesses to make contact with IRD Duhallow to find out what LEADER has to offer. The programme supports private enterprises and community groups. The funding available will ensure that more vital locally-led projects in areas like climate change, digital transformation, remote working and enterprise development can be progressed in rural communities throughout Duhallow.”

In addition, Ministers Humphries, McConalogue and Hackett announced €5m for Artisan Food Businesses. IRD Duhallow can bid in to the National Pot of €5m so projects can be awarded up to €200,000 at a rate of 75%.

Eileen Linehan, Assistant CEO of IRD Duhallow, is encouraging all small food producers to make an Expression of Interest.

Rebecca’s a top translator Killarney student Rebecca Doyle has won an award for best translation from English to Irish in Munster. The fifth year student, whose grandparents are from Banteer, took part in the national Comórtas na hAistritheoiríÓga and came out the best of 62 students across 28 schools. Last year she participated and translated a document from English to Irish and then translated a second document from French to Irish.

It’s not the first time her work has impressed the judges. In 2020, she entered a translation competition independent of her school. This competition was arranged by the Translators and

He and Daniel Buckley went through from the Muskerry round to the Munster round, and from there they both went to the National Final. Niall went on to place 3rd in the National Final. Rathmore Parish: Volunteer for the ministry of usher by calling the parish office at 064-7761669.

We particularly need additional volunteers for ushering at Friday evening masses. These masses take place about three Fridays in every month.

Over the next two weeks we are suspending the need for booking of weekday masses (Mon -Fri) Hopefully this will make it easier for people to return to Eucharist.

#SICAP STORIES ARE ONLINE The first week in June saw IRD Duhallow participate in the highly anticipated SICAP Stories social media campaign initiated by The Irish Local Development Network CLG (ILDN), which is the representative body for Ireland’s Local Development Companies.

Over the duration of four days, Local Development companies all across Ireland shone a light on how the Government's primary social inclusion measure – the Social Inclusion & Community Activation Programme – helped individuals and communities throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018–2022 provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals,

SICAP stories shared on social media on this occasion included Ballyhoura Development Food initiative as an example of help when needed for families and communities; Mayo North East Development company and Ballina Costume Company revealed how the Social Inclusion & Community Activation Programme (SICAP) supports Social Enterprise and how the Social Inclusion & Community Activation Programme supported positive collaboration between Community groups in delivering supports during Covid-19 involving Cork City Partnership and St Patrick's Athletic FC among others.

GO AND READ POET-TREE Kanturk Arts Festival opened their outdoor poetry exhibition on the 31st of May. Poets’ Trees was inspired by the work of Derbyshire based poet, Carol Brewer. Its success in her own town inspired the committee.

The arts committee is a small group of just six people who work hard to find new and creative initiatives each year. “We thought this was a wonderfully creative way of including as many participants as possible,” said Mary Angland, “one of the aims of the festival is to give a platform to local artists, writers, poets, musicians etc and this project really ticked that box.”

Nothing like this has been attempted by the festival before.

However, Poetry Slams are always part of it. The brave out there head up to the podium to read either their own composition or their favourite poems, and the original work is judged by an outside party.

The aim was to include as many disciplines and artists as possible in the festival. “It’s quite difficult for artists (and I’m speaking about artists in the loose meaning of the word to include writers etc as well) to get their work out to an audience and gain some recognition.”

Writers have been involved in the past with the inclusion of staged plays and Flash Fiction competitions which gained particular popularity, such that entries now come in from everywhere in Europe as well as the US. Age is not a factor either; the festival welcomes children’s arts and writing competitions.

There’s great love for the craft within the committee. Thanks to her background in teaching, Mary Angland has gathered quite a few favourite poets over the years. “I've become a fan of many modern poets down through the years such as Rita Ann Higgins, Mary Dorcey,

The response has been a fantastic one, and the group are delighted with it. And there’s always space for new blood on the committee. “We have a very small group who continually do all the work; the organising, the promoting, and everything else necessary to

run a successful festival. We would love if a few more enthusiastic people joined us.”

The work undertaken by the committee is no doubt a heavy load, but the fresh and beautiful creativity that shines through every project makes it all the more admirable.

New faces will eventually be needed to ensure the festival lives on, and we would hope to see the Poets’ Trees make a return in the future.

TIMELESS TEEN CAPER FILM REVIEW

By TADHG CURTIN John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) ultimately tells us to stop every once in a while and smell the roses… and have a good time doing it.

John Hughes was the king of the teen movie. A writer-director who gave voice to a young generation, his movies are timeless. Their themes and characters endure. This is my favourite of his works. It follows Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick), who along with his girlfriend, Sloane (Mia Sara), and his depressed best friend, Cameron (Alan Ruck), skip high school on one of the last days of their final year and decide to hit the city of Chicago, all the while being pursued by their tyrannical school principal, Mr. Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones).

It’s interesting to me how the

character of Ferris has been interpreted over the years. If you’re liberal leaning, Ferris represents the freedom of life, a rebel sticking it to the man and not taking the whole thing seriously. Others have attacked him as being a conservative figure, a white male who gets to coast through life, overcoming obstacles with an entitlement and ease due to his privilege. Maybe...

Doesn’t matter. Whichever side you may err on, this is THE greatest teen movie ever made in my opinion.

It’s smart and hilarious with touching moments throughout.

Every performance is great. Its energy and vibe is electric.

Effortlessly cool in a way that many teen movies try to be and fail as well as being endlessly quotable, (“...something doo economics, anyone? Voodoo Economics”, “Save Ferris”).

It boasts the greatest soundtrack ever curated for a movie of this kind (why isn’t ‘Beat City’ by The Flowerpot Men on Spotify?!!!)

It’s great.

Life does indeed move pretty fast, if you don’t stop and watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, you could miss it.

Scoil Mhuire’s students have made the most of this year’s unusual transition year by working hard to spread gratitude through the community. The group started a ‘Gratitude Project’ as a way to say “thank you” to local frontline workers.

“Due to Covid-19, our TY year hasn’t gone to plan,” said students Ciara, Kayla, and Aloishe, “so, when our Career Guidance teacher suggested that we carry out this project, it was a no-brainer!”

Together, they bounced ideas and eventually, created a list of what to include in these care packages.

The packages are made up of handmade cards, sweets, kindness bookmarks, customised Scoil Mhuire pens, and homemade baked goods.

They even include matching recipes to recreate the treats!

They’ve made their way around the locality from postman to priest, and the process has given the class a new sense of positivity.

“The best part of making these care packages was seeing the looks of gratitude and surprise on the faces of those who received them.

“A lot of different people have made huge sacrifices to keep our local community safe and so they deserved something in return for all their hard work.”

The students are going into the summer with more than ten of these Gratitude packages delivered to very well deserved local heroes. Well done to all those involved!

Students record with star Niamh Kavanagh of Eurovision fame returned to Millstreet during May. The singer joined with 18 Transition Year students from Millstreet Community School to record a song to celebrate the end of lockdown.

While the song – Elton John’s I’m Still Standing – is a tune renowned for its optimism, the school is also mindful of how many people have lost loved ones during the course of lockdown.

The initial plan for a Zoom recording was exchanged for a marquee performance when restrictions changed.

The song was performed by Niamh herself, a group of 18 Transition Year students on vocals, four student musicians, Cathy Byrnes on flute, Claire Lyons on violin, Tomás Cronin on electric piano, Katie O’Sullivan on concertina, Mr Ó Síodhcháin on keyboards and teacher Kevin O’Neill on the button accordion.

Niamh also sang Mustang Sally with the group. Some of the students had seen her on the Late Late Show the previous week when she sang it as part of the 30-year commemoration of The Commitments.

Along with the performance of I'm Still Standing, this Mustang Sally video will be available on the school's YouTube page.

Niamh is famous for her performance of In Your Eyes which won the 1993 Eurovision in the Green Glens arena in Millstreet.

Of the performance, the school said: "This is our thank you to everyone who has supported us in our efforts to keep Covid-19 coronavirus out of our school.

NEW FUNDS FOR EIP PROJECT

By MICHAEL MORRISSEY The month of May proved to be a very successful month at IRD Duhallow with the award of another Agri-EIP results based project.

IRD Duhallow prepared and submitted an application to the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine’s EIP section for an additional Agri-EIP project to compliment the current five-year Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP project.

The project proposal, entitled The Owentaraglin River EIP, was submitted to DAFM on March 31st, 2021. Following a review of the 54 submitted applications to the Department of Agriculture, 24 projects were deemed successful to share in a fund of €3 million.

Minister for State Pippa Hackett announced the results of the open call for farm and biodiversity initiatives on May 28th.

IRD Duhallow’s project, The Owentaraglin River EIP, was awarded a total of €198,870 funding to administer and implement a one-year project with a commencement date set for January 2022. The Owentaraglin is a high-status river waterbody in the Duhallow region. It is a tributary of the Upper River Blackwater and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation due to the presence of qualifying species listed as Annex II species under the EU

IRD Duhallow Assistant Manager Eileen Linehan alongside Michael Morrissey and Michael O'Connor. The team successfully submitted a new funding applicatoin for an EIP project on the Owentaraglin river Habitats Directive such as Atlantic salmon (salmo salar); freshwater pearl mussel (margaritifera margaritifera), and brook lamprey (lamptera planeri).

The river is also located in a Special Protection Area, the Stacks to Mullagheirks, Mount Eagle and West Limerick Hills SPA of conservation interest for the hen harrier (circus cyanus) and the merlin (falco columbarius).

The project will draw on the success and learnings of IRD’s Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments Agri-EIP Project and will apply a variety of measures used in the existing EIP on participating farms in the River Owentaraglin sub catchment.

This project will utilise green infrastructure measures as well as measures such as habitat

retention. Measures selected for this project will be trialled; measures that are recognised as effective conservation management tools for Atlantic salmon, freshwater pearl mussel and brook lamprey, and for the protection of river water quality.

Chair of the IRD Duhallow Environmental Working Group Michael Doyle welcomed the additional funding, saying “it is a fantastic achievement and has further enhanced the reputation of IRD Duhallow as a community-led group promoting environmental sustainability while improving farm family incomes in the region”.

The project team looks forward to meeting and liaising with the farmers on the Owentaraglin River over the course of 2022.

Duhallow news

Sort out your pet’s vaccinations As we all wait to be called for our Covid-19 vaccinations, now is the time to make an appointment with your vet to get your pet’s vaccinations back up to date.

During the height of the pandemic, many vet clinics, including our own, moved to essential or emergency services only, so as to protect the health of the public and our teams, whilst ensuring our hospitals could still remain up and running to tend to sick small and large animals. This meant that the annual vaccination boosters of many adult pets were not completed last year and have become overdue.

Over the past year, our pets have largely been home with us, with little contact with public areas or other pets. This means that their risk of contracting serious infectious diseases would have been far lower

Our pets’ immune systems learn and prepare to defend themselves against infectious insult when given their initial vaccinations as puppies and kittens, however the body forgets these disease-fighting skills over time, and hence needs to be reminded about once every year or so with a booster shot to ensure that their protection remains robust.

Contact your vet now to arrange an appointment to get your pet’s vaccinations back up to date. If they have become overdue, normally two doses of vaccine several weeks apart will be required to re-boost their immunity effectively.

CARER? TAKE CARE OF YOU!

By ALICE O’BRIEN Psychiatric nurse We are all familiar with the old saying “you can’t pour from an empty cup”.

Think about it though – do you really abide by it? Do you get caught up in the demands of everyday life, family commitments and things that always get put on the list before your own needs and your own self-care? When you are a carer, providing care for a loved one is a huge honour, a privilege but also a huge commitment that can drain your own cup.

Remember, there is no right or wrong way to feel, you are allowed to adjust to your new role, a role that might be ever-changing.

Accept your feelings and your emotions, it is all natural. It is all part of the rollercoaster of being a carer. The duties of a carer can let you feeling depleted of energy, feelings that are hard to describe.

However, if you feel demoralised, overwhelmed, under-appreciated, if you have the feeling of constantly being on-call, then a combination of these feelings will deplete your energy, your morale and your enjoyment of life.

It is so important to examine your own activities when you are the carer – activities outside of the role of care-giver. Nourishing activities lift your mood and help to keep you calm and relaxed. You need to make sure there is a balance between nourishing and depleting activities. Much of the time you may not be able to avoid the depleting activities. Find a balance where you make sure you fit in time for the nourishing activities.

Examples of nourishing activities include taking regular breaks, connecting with family or friends, getting out in the fresh air or taking some exercise.

Caring for someone can sometimes deplete your energy reserves as it is physically and emotionally difficult to meet the demands put on you. So take care that you are in balance.

Self-care is another important part of being a carer. Self-care can be achieved in many ways, like taking five minutes in your day to write down your thoughts or feelings, taking a break to observe what thoughts or feelings you are experiencing, increasing your water intake and watching your diet to ensure you get a healthy balance of nutrients to keep you healthy and energised. These are all examples of good self-care.

feel you are overwhelmed is the best gift you can give yourself and scheduling in a bit of time for yourself into the daily or even weekly routine will also increase your self-care, making you more available and present when you need to be.

Another aspect of self-care is to nurture the other relationships in your life. It is important to have a good relationship with the person you are caring for but it can often mean that you can’t give enough time to other important people in your life. So make time for your partner, your children or your friends. They are probably waiting in the sidelines, ready to step up to support you by spending quality time with you doing activities that you both enjoy. You can also ask for help, and accept offers of help when you need to. Even if you are managing your demands, ask anyway.

Don’t wait for your cup to be empty before you ask. Take the offer and take a break. You deserve to enjoy your own life when you do so much to ensure others get to enjoy theirs.

Feast of the Sacred Heart “Sacred Heart of Jesus we Trust in You.” We celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Friday, June 11th, writes Tom Dennehy.

This devotion began as a result of the revelations of Jesus to Margaret Mary Alacoque in December 1673 when Jesus revealed to her the wonders of His love for us. He explained to her that He wished to make these wonders known to the entire world and had chosen her to do this work. He asked that she promote receiving Holy Communion on the First Friday each month, a Holy Hour every Thursday and a feast day celebrating His Sacred Heart.

As a result the picture of the Sacred Heart, with the red light burning, became visible in every home.

There have been a number of

Eucharistic miracles throughout the world, which prove that when we receive Holy Communion, we are receiving the living, beating Heart of Jesus. Such is His love for us; He gives us his Heart to increase his Divine life in our souls. n One of the most amazing Eucharistic miracles is the Miracle of Lanciano, when the bread and wine turned into real flesh and real blood when elevated by the priest at Holy Mass. n A similar miracle happened in 1996 in Buenos Aires, Argentina when our current Pope Francis was Arch Bishop in that diocese. It

is well worth watching an eightminute video that can be found on YouTube on this reported Eucharistic miracle. n There is also a website created

by Blessed Carlos Acutis, who died at age 15 and had a great devotion to the Eucharist. His website, found at www.miracolieucaristici.org, documents more than 167 Eucharistic miracles from all over the world which confirms the teaching of Jesus on the Eucharist in the Gospel of John Ch. 6. 53:58.

Jesus is truly present to us at Holy Mass. In the words of Blessed Carlos Acutis “it is our highway to Heaven.”

HOW TO BE A STARGAZER If you are interested in observing and learning your way around the night sky, there are a multitude of books and apps to help and I will cover some of the best in the next article. But even before that, there are a few simple basics that we need to get right, writes Trevor O’Donoghue.

The first is location. Get as far away from street lights and light pollution as possible. You will see much more from a rural location than you will from inside in a town or city. However, all is not lost.

Even from a town, a good night's observing can still be had. Find a dark spot with a clear horizon and shelter yourself from bright lights or neighbouring cars or houses.

Our eyes are sensitive organs, a wonder of evolution and functionality. When we go out into a dark night, the pupils in our eyes dilate to leave in as much light as possible, allowing us to see better in the dark. This served our

ancestors well, helping them to spot danger and predators at night. It serves us well, allowing us to see faint stars and other celestial objects. However, it can take up to half an hour for our eyes to fully adapt to the dark. The longer you spend in the dark, the better. Any bright light will ruin your dark adaptation so stay away from bright lights and cars.

To read in the dark poses a problem. However, red light doesn't damage your dark adapted eyes so get yourself a red torch to read your star maps and guidebooks by. If you are using an app on your phone, make sure that you have turned on the red filter. This allows you to see the information without blowing your dark adapted vision.

Try out your night vision: Step out from a bright house and look up.

You will see some stars, but not a lot. Stay out in the dark for a few minutes and you will be amazed at how much more is visible.

Time to visit St John’s Well Duhallow, we’ve all heard the story of St John’s Well; it’s known to cure warts. And when you visit St John’s Well on June 24th, you know to expect Mass and beautiful scenery.

But even just over 60 years ago, it was a different place entirely.

Pilgrims made their rounds in the morning and stalls set up about a mile from the well. These sold treats of all sorts for all ages, including a drop of porter. Songs and tunes were a plenty; Bill O’Dea and a man from Bawnmore known as St Joseph for his long white beard were common voices with both offering songs for the visitors.

But as often happens, the crowds got smaller and smaller, and eventually, the crowds were gone and the celebration with them. By then, only locals made the rounds.

St John’s Day in 1954 saw the simple act that set the ball in motion

Sonny Buckley of Tullig was the first to be inspired and the ball started rolling. Over the years, a committee was formed, two side grottos were built, and a statue of St John was placed in the middle grotto with the picture.

In 1974, the first of what would become an annual Mass at the site took place.

The stations of the cross were another addition thanks to Sonny Buckley; when he passed away in 1979, he left £500 to the site for this purpose.

The spot now is vibrant, well tended, and Sonny's contribution is greatly loved by those who visit.

The most famous story may be the cure, but history tells us a new story, maybe even a better one; one of love and respect for the site.

LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP 2020 saw the hosting of the first Virtual Twomey Family Remorial and the response was absolutely amazing! There were participants from across 19 counties of Ireland as well as England, Wales, France, Holland, Australia and the US who undertook a walk, run or cycle in memory of Con, Baba Oisín and Little Lady, who were lost tragically on July 6th, 2012.

The festival is now in its second year being held virtually and Elber Twomey is calling on people to partake in a 2k, 5k, 4 mile, half-marathon or marathon walk/run or a 40K, 55K or 110K cycle over the days June 5th–13th inclusive, adhering to government guidelines.

The aim of the event is to encourage the promotion of positive mental health and instil in people the reality of how precious life is.

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A 1. What/who inspired you to start showjumping?

My parents Jerry and Maria got me started when I was seven years old, and my first competition was Millstreet horse show.

2. What was the moment that you knew you were on the right track?

When I got to ride on my first Irish team back in 2008. It was a great day for me and made me want more of it.

3. What is your greatest strength?

Work ethic and determination.

4. What is your greatest professional achievement?

When I was part of the team that won Gold at the European championships in 2017.

5. What are some of your other professional achievements?

In 2017, I piloted Spy Coast Farm’s Chaqui Z to a double clear round to help team Ireland win the European Championship gold medal in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2019, I was part of team that won the global champions tour final in Prague.

In 2021, I won the prestigious $400,000 FEI CSI 5* Grand Prix at WEF on my horse, Alejandro.

So far in my career I have competed at four European championships, one World Championship, and one World Cup final.

6. What is your greatest personal achievement?

Marrying my wife, Allison, and having three great kids; Olivia, Collin, and Lucy.

7. What was the greatest challenge you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

When I first came to America with the dream to be a success.

I succeeded with hard work and patience.

EQUESTRIAN SHANE SWEETNAM Spurred by the encouragement of his parents, Shane Sweetnam began riding horses at the age of five. A Castlemagner native, he attended the University of Limerick where he received a degree in computers. He began his Grand Prix career at age 16,

and has since participated over 50 times for the Irish team. Since 2004, he has resided in the United States, and runs Sweet Oak Farm with his wife Allison. He is ranked 26th in the world at present and continues to shoot for the top while teaching others.
