FARM SAFETY ALERT Duhallow lad’s heroism highlights perils

When 13-year-old Brian Philpott’s Dad had a life-threatening accident on the family’s farm in Coolroemore, Lyre, Banteer, the youngster leapt into action and is rightfully being hailed as a hero.

Thankfully his father, Declan, is now on the mend but other farmers in Duhallow and across Ireland have lost life and limb

in similar circumstances where farm machinery has been involved.

The case illustrates the very real dangers of farming – but there are simple precautions that can be taken to minimise the risks.

Step up to aid air medics As part of a health and wellbeing initiative in Kanturk Community Hospital Campus, the staff of the centre plan to undertake a virtual walk/run/cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head – a distance of about 360 miles.

Commencing on 10th May 2021, participants have six months to complete the challenge. The challenge will take you through many different parts of the country starting out at Mizen Head, on towards Dunmanway, Macroom, Kanturk, Limerick and up through the Midlands, from there into Enniskillen and on to Derry and finish up in Malin Head.

The journey can be completed in six months by averaging out at 14.4 miles per week or 2.05 miles per day. Every mile you walk is approximately 2,370 steps, so get counting from morning until evening – every steps counts!

We would very much like to open this up to everyone and we invite

Staff at Kanturk Community Hospital Campus all set to start their virtual walk people in the community to join us on this challenge. This will get you out walking, running or cycling and improving your fitness level, regardless of your starting point.

The cost to join this initiative is €30 and proceeds will go to Irish Community Rapid Response (Air Ambulance), which provides a

vital service locally and operates from Rathcoole.

There are T-shirts for the first 150 people who sign up.

Macra zooms into 70th year The Cork Country Macra celebrated their 70th anniversary on April 24th.

While the usual celebrations were missed, the event was held over Zoom and drew a crowd.

The Cork County Macra covers Avondhu, Muskerry, Carbery, Imokilly and Seandún, and members from all areas, walks of life, and ages were represented on the night.

It was a night of sharing stories and looking back on 70 fantastic years of Macra activities in Cork.

Decades’ worth of memories were shared in pictures and videos through the event.

The internet stage was given to Flor Riordan, Richard Hinchion,

agus ceol the familiar way, musical entertainment was provided by Joseph O’Sullivan and Elle Marie O’Dwyer. Well done to those lucky enough to take home one of the fantastic hampers. Not only were these packed with a range of goodies from crisps to cheese to a cheeky baby Jameson, but the suppliers were majority Cork based. One lucky attendee even won a €70 One4All voucher.

The Cork County Macra are also celebrating their whopping three winners in the National Talent Competition.

After such a great week, it’s exciting to see where the Cork County Macra will go next!

Covid stability fund 2021 The Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) has launched a ‘Covid-19 Stability Fund 2021’ which is open to community and voluntary organisations, charities and social enterprises.

The primary aim of the Covid-19 Stability Fund 2021 is to help organisations suffering financially due to a reduction in their fundraising and/or traded income to continue to deliver eligible critical services over the course of this difficult period.

The Fund is targeted at organisations which deliver critical services to vulnerable people within their community but which now face closure or a loss of

Ministers Humphreys, McGrath and O’Brien launching the €10 million Covid-19 Stability Fund 2021 service due to the impact of the pandemic and priority will be given to organisations that have not previously received State support since the onset of the Pandemic.

A chance to share all your Poet-Tree The Kanturk Arts Festival is now accepting poetry submissions.

These poems will be displayed on the trees of the O’Brien Street Park in June.This event is open to poets of all ages, young and old.

The poem must be an original work and should be no longer than 18 lines.

Carol Brewer, the poet Illustrated poems are behind ‘Poet-Trees’ also welcome.

Send your work to kanturkarts@gmail.com before 25th May to see your work as part of this unique and beautiful collection.

Keep in mind that these poems will be public and will be read by people of all ages.

The most recent work of the Kanturk Arts Festival is available on their Facebook page and website, including their Featured Artists Virtual Exhibition and An Evening Of Bluegrass and Poetry, which includes the poet behind Poet-Trees, Carol Brewer.

Some familiar faces appeared on the Aldi website recently – Castlemagner’s own Michelle and Pat Gayer along with their three kids appeared in one of Aldi‘s famous swap and save clips. The family boasted a €324 saving and their favourites can be seen on the Amazing

Savings section of Aldi’s website. They were even lucky enough to pack up and take a little trip for the production of their video (the back yard is still out of the house!). Be sure to check the Aldi Ireland Facebook page to see their video, get-away and all.

New business: Congratulations to Cathy Duggan on her new business. Hidden Beauty opened on May 10th beside Kathlynn Hair Design in East End (Main Street). Cathy studied Beauty Therapy in Cork College of Commerce, and worked out of Hidden Beauty in Clonakilty before now. We welcome her to Rathmore.

A NEW LEASE OF LIFE

Summer is upon us. The country is finally starting to open up again after the latest lockdown due to Covid-19. What better way to celebrate than having a summer clear out to declutter your home.

Here at IRD Duhallow we care about the environment – which is why we’re so proud of our IRD Duhallow Furniture Revamp.

Located at the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket, Co. Cork, the service accepts donations of furniture items such as wardrobes, lockers, bed frames, suites of furniture etc. We also bring items in for repair and upholstery so instead of them being thrown out we give your old pieces a new lease of life.

To date we have diverted 164.8 tons of waste that would potentially have ended up in landfills and redistributed 146.7 tons through sales. We are doing our bit to help the environment in the local IRD Duhallow area and we want to make you aware of how you can too.

More environmentally friendly options available in our locality are as follows: For disposing of green waste, your local centres are where to go. Prices vary depending on quantity. For farmers, the farmyard can be cluttered after the winter with bale wrap plastic and netting. Your local recycling centres do not take this waste but the Irish Farm Film Producers group set up collection points nationwide at this time of year for this waste as well as fertiliser and ration bags. Dates for the 2021 Programme will be confirmed shortly due to the easing of Covid-19 Level 5 restrictions.

For the disposing of batteries, supermarkets such as your local Supervalu, Spar or Dunnes have battery collection points from WEEE Ireland.

For disposing of old CDs and DVDs, the cases of both can be put into a common household recycling bin, but where possible remove any soft plastic lining and paper sleeves. CDs and DVDs should be placed in the general waste bin. CDs and DVDs can also be donated to a local charity shop or to friends and family.

For disposing of those fats, oils and grease, instead of putting them down the drain all three can be placed in a food bin once cooled down. Remove any packaging and place in a sealable container that

can be recycled, for example a plastic bottle is quite useful for disposing of fats, oils and grease.

For disposing of mattresses, Cork/Kerry County Council may accept them as part of their Bulky Household Collection. Used mattresses and batteries and leftover paint can be brought to a civic amenity site – the one in Kanturk is open on Wednesday and Friday 9am-4.30pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm and Milstreet, Monday and Thursday 9am4.30pm, Saturday 9am-1pm.

Banteer Tidy Towns’ Bernie O’Connor visited the school at the end of April to present them with their ‘No Mow’ sign. This will contribute to the improvement of biodiversity in the area. Eileen Fitzgerald, the Green Flag coordinator, accepted the sign and some hi-vis jackets on behalf of the school.

Tidy Towns handle a variety of areas within communities, from the weeding and decoration we’ve seen, to work with clothing banks and litter collection.

Regular maintenance is a huge step in staying safe. n Take your time – rushing leads us to cutting corners, and cutting corners leads to accidents. All too often, hurrying through a task means we fail to see obstacles. Trips, falls, and other injuries are far more likely when we rush.

n Be mindful of hazards – risks are

everywhere on the farm, and not all of them are the size of machinery.

Chemicals and poison as well as trips on uneven ground or over equipment are ever present dangers. Even the weather must be factored into farm risk assessment. Water poses a constant threat; be aware of where the water hazards are, be they stream, river, pond, or in any other form.

n Be well rested – the dangers of

operating vehicles while tired have been demonstrated more than ever in recent years, but may be dismissed on the farm. Familiarity cannot save you, but ensuring you’re properly rested and ready for your tasks can.

n Have an emergency plan – first aid

knowledge is valuable in every facet of life and, if possible, take a class.

Ensure easy access to a well stocked first aid kit. If you have children or teenagers around the farm, make sure they understand what to do in an emergency. Plan routes to the nearest hospital and ensure others know this route, and ensure that your Eircode is visibly posted or known to you.

Knowing your Eircode can be the difference between life and death when you’re on the farm. Farms for the most part do not have a numbered address, and descriptors can be difficult to find, if not impossible. With an Eircode, emergency services will not face the same difficulties and it may save a life. In case someone else is on your property and is contacting them for you, have your Eircode clearly displayed somewhere in the house. Above the telephone or on the fridge are the easiest to find. Tell them where they can find it before you set out to work, or even text it to them, just in case.

By CALEB O’CONNOR A first year student at Pobalscoil Sráid a'Mhuilinn in Millstreet has been hailed as a hero in recent weeks.

Brian Philpott of Coolroemore, Lyre, Banteer saved his father’s life at the end of April.

He and his father, Declan, were mounting an agitator to a tractor when it slipped and trapped Declan between the tractor wheel and the agitator. The weight of it left Declan unable to breathe, and he passed out. But Brian leapt into action.

Thanks to some quick thinking and a calm head, the 13-year-old was able to move the vehicle forward until his father was freed. He then called Kanturk Fire and Rescue, who soon arrived on the scene.

Declan is on the mend following two days in hospital and nine broken ribs. It was an act that goes beyond admirable, and there is no doubt that Brian deserves his title of hero.

Brian said he did what anyone would have done – sadly, this isn’t always possible. In summer months, reports of farm and farm machinery related accidents are far more common. During 2020, more than 20 farm related fatalities were reported, and five of those were in May alone.

It shouldn’t take farm accidents to get us thinking about farm safety. We can’t predict what will happen any time we step out the door, but we can reduce the risks. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.

The little things can save our lives.

Nothing is certain when working on the farm and it is up to us to make it as safe as we can.

As summer draws closer, think about what you can change about your process to make things that little bit safer. It could save a life.

Is there anybody out there?

By TREVOR O’DONOGHUE When I was in secondary school, the first few pages of my geography book proclaimed our place in the Universe. Earth was the third planet from the Sun. One of nine planets in orbit around it. That was it, nine planets. Sure, there was a lot of talk about planets around other stars and Captain Picard and the starship Enterprise would pay a visit to some of them every week. But in the real world there were nine planets. That was our lot.

That was until 1992, when the first planet outside our solar system was discovered. Once the first one was found, more followed and pretty soon the numbers started to become quite significant. Today, that number stands at well over 4,000 extrasolar planets (exoplanets) orbiting around other stars, with the number growing all the time.

Our own solar system wasn't immune from discovery in this regard. Large asteroids (or if you prefer, small planets) were discovered outside the orbit of Pluto.

This meant that either we had more than nine planets, or Pluto was just one of many small rocky worlds orbiting the sun at great distances.

Unfortunately, Pluto got demoted, and so from 2006, our solar system

The habitable or Goldilocks zone was pronounced to have eight planets with Pluto and other bodies like it becoming ‘dwarf planets’.

Today the variety of exoplanets around other suns is immense and ranges from large hot balls of gas that travel around their parent star at breakneck speed, to smaller rocky worlds orbiting at a more leisurely rate and every possible combination in between.

the habitable or Goldilocks zone, a region where the temperature is not too hot and not too cold, but is just right to support liquid water on a planet's surface. Unfortunately, rocky worlds tend to be much harder to find than the larger gas planets and so the number of confirmed terrestrial exoplanets is much smaller than the total number of exoplanets discovered.

In 2007, NASA launched the Kepler space telescope to discover more exoplanets and establish their frequency. By the time the mission ended in 2018, data from Kepler has confirmed over 2,600 exoplanets. The good news is that using data from Kepler, scientists estimate that there are over 40 billion earthlike planets in our Milky Way galaxy alone, 11 billion of which orbit sunlike stars. In fact, there are more planets in our galaxy than stars. In spite of this proliferation of alien worlds, and the significant advances in modern telescopes and detection methods, we are still no closer to answering that big question: Are we alone?

A CLASH OF FAITHS FILM REVIEW

By TADHG CURTIN Christianity and Paganism clash in the granddaddy of folk horror movies, The Wicker Man (1973) For farmers, that busy time of year is here again – silage season.The saying ‘make hay while the sun shines’ is never more applicable with the sun being sought after, to yield and cultivate the crops of summer for the dark months of winter. However, worship and need for the greatest source of energy has never been more urgent and weird than in Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man. It follows police sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) who travels from mainland England to the remote island of Summerisle to probe the disappearance of a

missing girl. The investigation sees the devoutly Christian Howie clash with the Celtic Pagan traditions being practiced by the inhabitants under Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) and as they approach the impending celebration of May Day, he realises he may be in over his head in a strange place.

The Wicker Man might very well be the oddest of horror movies.

Part folk horror, part musical, its disparate and off-kilter elements somehow give it its unique power and that’s why I love it.

Woodward gives one of the greatest and most powerful performances ever given in a horror movie, ably supported by the mighty Lee. Its effect has not diminished over the years. Many have subsequently attempted to evoke its weird energy – 2019’s Midsommar is a worthy successor, and notoriously in the unintentional hilarity of the 2006 remake, but few have succeeded. It lulls you into the strange world of Summerisle, coaxing you into empathising with the free spirits of the island against the puritanical righteousness of Howie until the electrifying but devastating climax where… well... Maybe take time and make your acquaintance with The Wicker Man to experience it for yourself.

Sunscreen is vital even in Ireland In Ireland, the UV radiation levels are high from April to September, even when it is cloudy, but only 21% of people wear sunscreen to prevent premature skin aging and prevent skin cancers.

There are two types of sunscreens – mineral and chemical. Chemical formulas absorb UVA and UVB radiation, whilst mineral sunscreens reflect and scatter UVA and UVB radiation. Mineral sunscreens don't contain oxybenzone and other harmful chemicals which can affect hormones and trigger allergies. Oxybenzone also causes damage to the planet’s coral reefs.

How to take control of worry

By ALICE O’BRIEN Psychiatric nurse We all worry, it’s very common. In fact, it’s quite normal to worry about things occasionally.

You’re not alone – everyone does it.

But what is worry? How do we know if our worrying is becoming a problem?

Worry is a thought process.

Worry is always about future events – you don’t worry about the past, you ruminate about the past – you worry about the future.

Worry is usually centred on topics that we are uncertain of, or even things that we view negatively.

Worry is always accompanied by feeling of anxiety.

Worry can be triggered by

external events, like having an argument with someone, or simply watching the news. Worry is also triggered be internal events – having a sensation in the chest might make us worry we are about to have a heart attack. We can worry about current problems, like paying unexpected bills. We also worry about situations that may never happen, like getting sick. This

type of worry is often accompanied by ‘what if’ type thinking: “What if I get Covid when I go back to work?”

A good tip to help with excessive worry is to try setting aside your worry. When you find yourself thinking about your worries you ‘postpone the worry’. Acknowledge the worry but decide on a time when you can worry. For example, you decide that worry time for you is in the evening (between 7.30 and 8pm for example), you can only worry during that time.

So, during the day, when anxiety or worrying thoughts arise, you think to yourself, “I notice the worry and I will give it time this evening”.

When ‘worry time’ arrives, you might find that your worries are less troubling than you thought. You might even find that you have forgotten some of them – and that can’t be a bad thing!

GETTING BACK TO WORKING OUT The country is opening back up and lots of us are excited – a touch of normal life is returning!

Some of us have managed to keep up an exercise routine while in lockdown without too much of a challenge. Lots of others, though, may have lost all motivation and willingness to exercise these past few months.

A lack of group classes. A lack of anywhere to dress up and go.

The stress and challenges of living through yet another lockdown...

If the start of 2021 has not been an active one for you, fear not.

There is still plenty of time left in this year to make exercise and movement a priority in your life!

John Howard: Kilcorney to South Korea Where do you currently reside?

I recently returned home to Duhallow after spending nine years living and teaching in Gwangju, South Korea. It’s a beautiful city in the south-west of the country, three-and-a-half hours from the capital Seoul, and South Korea’s sixth biggest city.

What made you choose to move to South Korea?

I was familiar with the city since they hosted World Cup matches in 2002. Also, my friend from secondary school was teaching in a neighbouring city the year before and recommended the nightlife and music scene in Gwangju.

How did it differ from Duhallow?

It’s quite different from Duhallow and Kilcorney where I grew up, that’s for sure! The city has a population of over 1.5 million with many families living in high-rise apartment buildings. Getting out of the city, the land would primarily be used for rice-growing. Seeing a fine field of healthy suckler cows wouldn’t be as common as in Duhallow!

What kept you there?

My nine years in Korea flew and there were a few reasons I stayed so long. The teaching for a start

famous for. In my province it was Bulgogi (marinated beef cooked in strips on a grill over hot coals).

What would you say that you missed most about home?

Mammy’s cooking of course! Can’t beat a good fry-up from home; eggs from the coop, thick rashers and don’t forget the Clonakilty black and white puddings! Beyond that, I missed the greenery of Ireland. Korea has a beauty of its own too but it wouldn’t get enough rainfall to be labelled ‘The Emerald Isle’!

What’s next for you?

I returned to Ireland just over a month ago and am hoping to go back to university to train as a primary school teacher. I gained a lot of experience in Korea and would recommend traveling or working there, to anyone figuring out the next step in their lives.

Be careful though, you might not want to leave!

Itchy ears under the microscope “Star is scratching at her ears again,” a worried voice says on the telephone, “and she keeps dragging her head along the carpet and shaking her head. She seems a bit off form too – not her usual happy self…”

This a familiar pattern of signs we hear as vets, most likely indicating an ear infection. This can be caused by a bacterial infection, yeast overgrowth or a parasite infestation. You see, ears are a nice, warm, moist area for bacteria, yeast and parasites to set up camp in, providing an ideal environment for these bugs to flourish.

Unfortunately ear infections are one of the most common conditions I see day to day in our practice. Ear disease can be painful and distressing for the pet affected, so it is important to seek

an appointment with your vet so that the cause of the condition can be correctly diagnosed and treated.

As vets, we need to examine patients with ear disease with a tool called an otoscope which allows us to see deep into the ear

canal. This allows us to assess the problem, look for anything that might be stuck deep down in there and check if the thin membrane protecting the delicate structures of the ear drum are damaged.

Your vet may even need to take samples from the ear with a swab to assess under the microscope.

These samples help us to decide what is causing the infection so that we can select the appropriate treatment to resolve the pet’s ear disease – sometimes we can even see ear mites going for a walk across our sample under the microscope (see picture).

VINCENT DE PAWS TAKES THE LEAD Susie Jones wanted to find a way to help animals in Cork, but couldn’t foster or adopt. Then, on an evening walk with Bennie, St Vincent De Paws was born.

Established in 2014, their first outing was a pure success; they delivered two van loads of food and bedding for Pauline’s Rescue, which takes in abandoned and neglected dogs. The group has come a long way, with over 8,000 followers on Facebook and 70 volunteers today.

The group operates with one big rule: no money.

“As great as all the charities in Ireland and around are, we are not a charity. We do not hold a charity number,” says Susie, “We are a voluntary organisation of like-minded animal lovers who just want to help those that need it.”

Vincent De Paws are currently helping Cork Penny Dinners by providing dog food, blankets, and coats. For many homeless people, their pets are their only companion,

and with this help, Vincent De Paws are ensuring they can keep a companion through thick and thin.

This also works to prevent pets being given up, thus avoiding shelters filling up.

Providing donated items also means finances can be focused on vet care and other necessities without worry of food bills.

Sarah of Fairy Tale Grooming in Kanturk is currently doing a collection for them. She tries to advertise as often as possible as she is the only drop off point in the area. “Very easy,” she said, “all you have to do is take in the food and then contact them when you have gathered a nice bit and they'll arrange to get the food from you.”

You can organise your own bin collections for the organisation or volunteer your free time.

Bins accept: Cat and dog food (dry or wet, pouches or tins); cat and dog treats; cat and dog toys (old or new); blankets and bedding cannot be accepted due to Covid.

If your pet has passed and you want their legacy to live on, the option to donate their belongings to a shelter animal is also available.

Be a biodiversity hero g By AISLING NATOFF Wildlife Biology intern at IRD Duhallow

Biodiversity monitoring involves determining the status of living organisms and the ecosystems they inhabit. It is generally carried out by collecting data based on the presence or absence of species in an area.

Members of the public can become involved in biodiversity monitoring by volunteering to collect scientific data. This type of volunteer work is known as citizen science. Biodiversity monitoring volunteers help to develop long-term and widespread data on the status of different species around Ireland. This data is vital in the tracking of species responses to climate change and habitat loss.

Various biodiversity monitoring schemes have been developed by the National Biodiversity Data Centre (NBDC) and other wildlife organisations. The Irish Butterfly Monitoring scheme was developed by the NBDC in 2007 in order to track Irish butterfly populations from year to year.

To become involved in this important work you can go on weekly butterfly walks from April to September and record the quantity of each butterfly species you spot along the way. The All Ireland Bumblebee Monitoring Scheme was established in 2011 as part of the Irish Pollinators initiative in order to track bumblebee populations across Ireland.

The Farm Hedgehog Questionnaire only takes about five minutes to complete Bumblebees are considered to be Ireland's most important wild pollinator. However, some 30% of Ireland’s bumblebee species are currently under threat of extinction and this figure is rising. Taking part in the Bumblebee monitoring scheme is an excellent way of learning more about these fantastic pollinators whilst helping to identify species in need of help. If you want to help you can do so by going on bumblebee walks (1 to 2km) throughout the year and recording quantities of all the bumblebee species you see. The Farmers’ Wildlife Calendar was developed by the NBDC and involves recording the first occurrence of specific seasonal species on your farm. The species to look out for are the orange-tip butterfly, frog spawn, ash mining bee, flowering primrose, flowering blackthorn, common cuckoo, swallow, large red damselfly and marsh marigold. A species identification feature ID card for the species listed above can be found on the Farmers’ Wildlife Calendar: Climate Tracker page of biodiversityireland.ie. Once it has been filled out you can submit it to https://tinyurl.com/4747u97y/ The Farm Hedgehog Questionnaire is an online survey run by the Irish hedgehog survey. This survey asks about the type of farm, habitats present and the occurrence of hedgehogs and other species on the farm. It can be carried out by visiting the following link: https://tinyurl.com/ rnumj8hz/ and should take approximately five minutes to complete.
