A MIGHTY WOMAN Tribute to the late Maureen Cronin Duhallow bids a fond and respectful farewell to the courageous Maureen Cronin, who stood up for women’s rights at a time in Ireland when social conventions were not on her side.

Subject to the ‘marriage ban’ that effectively ended women’s teaching careers the moment they wed, she resisted by working a full year without

pay; and spearheaded a test case brought by her trade union that saw the ban for teachers overturned in 1953 and scrapped entirely in 1973.

Maureen, who passed away peacefully this month aged 105, hailed from Ennis and Toureenfineen, Rockchapel.

Support Darkness Into Light The team at Munster Fire & Safety is walking from Darkness into Light in aid of Pieta House on 8th May and they’re putting out the call to the people of Millstreet and the surrounding areas to do the same.

“Even with social distancing, a community can get together through having the same intention to raise awareness and funds for this great cause,” said Claire O’Leary, “and to foster the community spirit on the day, we would like to invite anyone who is doing their own Darkness into Light activity to call by the outside of our new store on Main Street for takeaway refreshments on the morning from 4.45am.”

The crew at Munster Fire & Safety hope to head off at about 4.15am to do a 5k walk starting at the junction for the Green Glens on the Killarney Road, walking to Drishane and back to the shop in time to have the kettle boiled for a hot cuppa for anyone who would like to avail.

The team from Munster Fire & Safety are calling on the community to step up service, and the Darkness into Light idea is a powerfully symbolic way to raise mental health awareness, as well as to remember any loved ones we have lost. Other businesses from Millstreet and the surrounding areas have backed the initiative by donating food for refreshments or by agreeing to take a collection box

for those who wish to donate.

Collection boxes will be in local shops until 18th May. “We are delighted to get so many local businesses on board – who knows, this could become an annual event,” said Claire.

ALL ABUZZ FOR FIONA Duhallow doc is Forbes u30 star Duhallow’s own Dr Fiona Edwards Murphy has been welcomed to the Forbes 30 under 30 Europe Class of 2021 in the Manufacturing and Industry category “creating the products, methods and materials tomorrow”.

Up against tens of thousands of nominations, Fiona was recognised by editors and expert industry judges as one of the most impactful young entrepreneurs and game-changers.

ApisProtect has launched two products in two markets in the past six months and is now working with commercial beekeepers in the U.S. and hobbyist beekeepers here in Ireland.

BOOST FOR OUR RURAL FUTURE On 19th April, Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys announced €75million for 24 landmark regeneration projects across the country. These projects focus on rural communities, and would see old buildings and landmarks modernised for a post-Covid Ireland.

Amongst these is Duhallow’s own Ballydesmond, securing funding of €774,000, which will be supplemented by the Council to a total project cost of €860,000.

These monies will be focused on improvement works for the town centre, including key village centre developments such as enhanced streetscapes, walkways and park areas.

Sign up for Spring cleanup in Lismire Lismire’s Community Spring Cleanup will be held on the May Bank Holiday weekend (1st-3rd May). This year's clean up is strictly roadside rubbish only and everything collected must fit into a refuse bag. The residents of each area / road are asked to clean their own area.

Filled bags must be tied when full and left by the roadside ready for collection.

Arrangements for collection of filled bags can be made via our Facebook page or by phoning 0879706959; all arrangements for collection of bags must be made before 5pm on the Monday afternoon. Bags for collecting will be available at the GAA grounds on the Saturday at 9.30am.

Wear a hi-viz, gloves and a mask if collecting in close proximity to someone outside your own bubble. Social distancing rules must also be adhered to when collecting.

Remember only BAGS of roadside litter will be collected this year. No large items or items not in bags will be collected.

KILBRIN GRAVEYARD FUNDRAISER What started with a desperate attempt to raise some money to maintain the graveyard for the year ahead has resulted in enough to do this and buy much needed new machinery.

The €6,000 mark has been passed and this has far exceeded any expectations in the beginning. The voluntary group that maintain the graveyard want to express their real gratitude to everyone.

Congratulations to Freemount Macra's Meadhbh Walsh for her performance in the Macra na Feirme National Talent Solo Singing Finals. Meadhbh wowed the judges with her take on Now I'm Easy. The national talent competition took place online on April 24.

While she may not have walked away with first place, it’s an honour to even qualify.

Meadhbh’s music is available online on YouTube and Tiktok, and she does live concerts from home on Facebook and Instagram. Her own Irish folk ballad album, Off By Heart, is available now on her website.

Kanturk AFC: This week is a big week for all underage sport in the country with the return of non contact training for all our underage teams. It will be great to see everybody back out in Gurteenard. We are now also recruiting volunteers to help our hard-working coaches.

Rachel Kelly of Craobh Chronáin CCÉ took 1st place in the U10s fiddle competition in the Lackagh Comhatas Virtual Feis. It is a remarkable achievement for such a young musician. The virtual Feis was held through video and Zoom.

Competitors were required to send two videos each – two tunes of any traditional type for U10s, and one jig and one reel for other groups. All tunes performed had to be done without accompaniment. The full list of winners can be found on the Lackagh Comhaltas Facebook page. no teams and with the number of new players increasing every year we need new coaches to help with the running of these teams.

Scoil Mhuire has been called to The Bar! The Bar of Ireland's ‘Look into Law’ Transition Year Programme is an exciting initiative aimed at increasing students' awareness of the work of The Bar of Ireland and to encourage students to consider a career as a barrister. Students who completed the five-week course were presented with

certificates from Ms. Maura McNally SC, Chair of The General Council of the Bar of Ireland. Among those in Scoil Mhuire who completed the Bar of Ireland’s Look into Law Programme were; Gemma Healy, Doireann Twomey, Con O'Brien, Erika Marina Maciuca, Jayne Harrington and Hagar Soliman, pictured above.

Pipped at Oscars Wolfwalkers lost out to Soul for best animated feature at the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday 25th. While directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart watched the live stream at Kilkenny Castle, Cork screenwriter Will Collins enjoyed it in his pyjamas.

Originally from Castlemagner, Will has worked on Cartoon Saloon's own Song of The Sea as well as Angela's Christmas.

Cartoon Saloon’s works have been nominated for a whole host of awards, won its share, and their Song of The Sea was the first Animated feature to win Best Picture at the Irish IFTA Academy Awards. Wolfwalkers has been nominated for a Golden Globe, Academy Award and BAFTA.

Kanturk Arts Committee host an ‘Evening of Bluegrass & Poetry’ featuring Carol Brewer, Marie O’Halloran, Long Way Home and Seán Bowman at 8pm on Monday 3rd May 2021. Log on to www.kanturkarts.ie to register for this free zoom event. Long Way Home comprises of duo Owen Schinkel (The Netherlands) and Kylie Kay Anderson (Utah, USA) who specialise in bluegrass and roots. They are currently based in Kanturk.

Tidy Towns are meeting in both Castlemagner and Cecilstown Village every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to help. Please wear a high vis vest and gloves for safety. We ask everyone to follow public safety guidelines and to observe social distancing. The preparation of the shrubbery area to build raised beds is continuing with steady progress. The native hedge is beginning to bud. Thanks to the many volunteers who are doing a fantastic job of keeping it watered.

Gneeveguilla GAA Club: It is with profound sadness that we hear of the passing of Mai Murphy.

Mai had always been a great next door neighbour and supporter of our club throughout the years.

Mai served as an officer for several years as Bar Treasurer. We as a club offer our deepest condolences to Mike, Don, Pj, Michelle, Amy and to all family and friends of Mai. May she rest in peace.

Sympathy: To families of Sr Genevieve Lyne formerly of Ballybrack, Firies. Killarney Co Kerry.

The late Connie Kelleher, RIP: Connie Kelleher of Shinnagh Upper Rathmore was laid to rest on April 9th. He was well known throughout the Rathmore as a man of farming, politics, and with a love for the community. He had great pride in his grandson Niall Kelleher, who followed in his political footsteps and became Mayor of Kerry in 2019. A great character and a pure gentleman, he will be sadly missed.

Sympathy to his children, Dan, Phil, Denis, Paudie & Marie (O’Donoghue), and to his daughters-in-law, son-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all extended family. May Connie rest in peace.

The life of... a therapist SHELLY COLLINS, from Rathcoole, is a Speech and Language Therapist at Cork University Hospital What is your job description?

Senior Speech and Language Therapist in Critical Care and Neurosurgery in Cork University Hospital (CUH).

What is it really like?

Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) is a very diverse career.

We provide assessment and therapy to children and adults who experience communication and swallowing difficulties, which can occur for a variety of reasons such as developmental delay, neurological disorders, traumatic or acquired brain injury or stroke to name but a few. SLTs work closely with the individual and everyone involved in their care to help the person achieve their rehabilitation goals through support strategies and therapy exercises.

What subjects did you most enjoy in school/college?

In school, I preferred science subjects over languages, and I had a particular interest in Biology which helps when working in a hospital setting.

How did you arrive at your current position?

In 2010, I graduated from University College Cork with a degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences. My career initially started in paediatric primary care in Kerry but then I moved to other settings including private practice, schools, nursing homes and hospital settings. During that time I developed specialist skills in a number of areas such as paediatric feeding, palliative care, stroke, dementia, critical care and acquired brain injury to name but a few. Currently, I am in a senior role in CUH which involves

providing specific care to patients following brain injuries, brain surgeries and admission to ICU. I am part of a specialist team involved in awake craniotomy surgeries where I am performing language testing on patients who are awake during their brain surgery.

Have you any regrets?

Thankfully, I don’t have any regrets. The job can be intense, so I try to put a lot of value on having a strong work life balance.

Easier said than done!

What do you love most about your job?

There are loads of great things about my job such as the fast pace

and variety of work but giving a person a way to communicate and helping them on their recovery journey is really fulfilling.

What do you least love about your job?

Never ending paperwork! Also, the nature of my work means there are times when I am caring for people in very difficult situations, and although that can be upsetting, I do think the good days definitely outweigh the bad.

Any advice for students hoping for a career in your field?

If possible, get work experience in this area. When starting your career avail of experience in a range of settings.

CAR RAFFLE FOR ASTROTURF Boherbue Comprehensive School are hosting a raffle to raise funds for a new AstroTurf pitch on the school grounds. Principal Vera Leader is encouraging those who have not yet purchased a ticket to join before the draw takes place on June 4th. The prize? A brand new Kia Ceed worth €26,000!

Not only could you drive away with a new car, the raffle supports local development. Such a project can benefit students, teachers, and the community for years to come.

Ms Leader has noticed the distinction between how we are encouraged to focus on our wellbeing and how accessible this really is, especially in rural areas.

As much as technology can help us, it cannot substitute for exercise or the social aspect of getting out and about, particularly after a year of lockdowns.

CELEBRATING Marriage or work; what do you choose?

It seems like a silly question now, but even as recently as 1973, it was no joke; it was a reality, and without Maureen Cronin, its end could be even more recent.

In recent weeks, we have mourned Maureen Cronin of Ennis and Toureenfineen, Rockchapel, but as such a vibrant character, a celebration of her life is just as fitting.

Maureen Cronin passed on peacefully Any life is hard to capture on the in her 105th year earlier this month page, and Maureen’s 105 years of rebellion, art, and courage are no exception.

With eight instruments under her belt, she was ready for every occasion, though the fiddle seemed her true love. She bought her first one in Abbyfeale for £1, and at least until 2007, she still had it.

Her most notable achievement, and the one Three generations... Maureen with her you’ll find her name attached to in granddaughter and her daughter Ann every search, was her part in the overturn of the marriage ban. The ban was introduced in 1933, and stated that women who married after the ban took effect were required to leave their permanent work.

For Maureen, teaching had been a life goal, and following her marriage to Sean Cronin, she was approached by the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) to become a test case. Thanks to her circumstances – a big farm and a supportive family – she was able to agree. They wanted someone to push the boundaries and When Maureen wed Sean Cronin, she there was no better woman.

For a year, Maureen worked as a rebelled against a law that banned married women from permanent work teacher with no pay. She was ignored

By CALEB O’CONNOR by inspectors, looked down upon by many around her, and barely tolerated by parents. Even the simplest thing – her married name – was ignored; as far as the school was concerned, Maureen Cronin did not exist.

Despite these struggles, not once did she falter.

After a disagreement with an inspector, the Bishop of Limerick was brought into the mix. He learned of her stance, but rather than the judgement she had faced from so many others, he was in awe of her courage. In just a few days, he delivered the salary she’d been asked to do without.

Once removed from this post, she found work as a music teacher at a Protestant school in Kilkenny. Here, she was adored and appreciated by staff and students alike. But this came with its own struggles. During her time in Kilkenny, the divide of Catholic and Protestant was strong, and her work offered her a home on the grounds. An oft recounted story

by Maureen was of a visit by a parish priest. While passing the wall, he tipped her on the shoulder and said, “if you get sick in that residence, that beautiful house, and you die, I cannot attend you.”

But her act of defiance and courage got that ball rolling.

The ban was overturned for teachers in 1953, and then scrapped completely in 1973.

In 1982, Maureen retired from her teaching post, but life has not gotten boring since.

Maureen Cronin pictured at the Rockchapel Senior Citizens’ Party on the occasion of her 100th Birthday Photos by Neily Curtin parish newsletters to local shops every week.

She wrote a poem every day and this led to eight published books of poetry. The proceeds of these books went to charity, particularly to Cahercalla, a community hospital and hospice care in Ennis. Her notebooks full of poetry also graced the pages of the local press; every Thursday, she made a trip to the editor of the Clare Champion with a new piece to be published. For many years, she simply posted her poems under ‘anon’ but in recent years, her name was a staple in the newspaper.

In September 2014, she received the Hidden Hearing Heroes award, a public nominated accolade to “celebrate those who made a significant, and often unheralded, contribution to society”.

Stories of Maureen are endless and memorable. One recounted in Sliabh Luachra Music Masters Vol. 2 by Dan Herlihy concerned an All-Ireland melodeon competition in Buncrana.

the bed in her guest house, wrapped in a coat while she explored, but come competition time, the doors were locked. Call after call was put out for the owner of the home to no avail. However, a local man, well known to the owners, proposed climbing a ladder to retrieve it, certain that no ill would come of it. Until the Gardaí showed up when he was half-

way up the ladder! It took some luck and a visit from the owner of the house to get her onto the stage, and after one last hiccup of shock, she was given her turn on stage and went on to win the competition.

Her spirit, contributions and, most of all, the joy she brought with her into every endeavour will be greatly missed.

Book is a bridge to the past On a Friday in September, 2019, Gerry Forde’s decision to take a stroll in Donoughmore inspired a dense and entertaining record of a history hiding in plain sight in the essential The Bridges of Donoughmore (2021), writes

Discover Duhallow’s TADHG CURTIN. I love history. I inherited this from my father. With this book, I thought I would be getting just a list of the bridges throughout the area of Donoughmore accompanied by some nice pictures, which I did.

But I did not expect the wealth of information relating to the dense history and politics surrounding their construction. I became enraptured.

So much is in here. The main figure is a man named Richard

Griffith responsible for many innovations but here primarily Griffith’s Valuation published in 1851 where he oversaw the first geographical survey of this country. In working to produce that landmark publication, Forde gives us an insight into the climate at this time; the relationship between the upper and lower classes – Irish and English; the tools of ordnance surveying. We learn the different types of bridge constructions. Forde even connects Padraig O'Keeffe, ‘The Fiddle Master’, and his composition, The Donoughmore Reel, back to this heady time.

Meanwhile, we are taken on a tour of the Donoughmore area pictorially accompanied

by Forde and his canine companion, Spud. It’s some journey!

The facts and knowledge here could very well set you up to answer the winning question in a future pub quiz (the definition of

an acre was a term used to apply to an area which could be ploughed by a pair of oxen and a good man in a day; 95% of the world’s thoroughbreds date back to three horses).

It is a thorough compendium, showcasing the formation of a nation both physically and culturally. How a book about bridges in Donoughmore stirs up feelings of Irish national identity is a testament to Mr. Forde. For the historically inclined, it’s essential.

For the layman, give it a chance. A rich and rewarding text awaits you.

Author, Gerry Forde, on what inspired him to write the book: “I was born and raised in Donoughmore parish. I am a member of the local historical society and we are lucky to have the influence of a French man, Steph Bruchet, who made a photographic presentation of scenes in the parish of landscapes, nature and of the village of Stuake without a single human being in any picture. It was very profound.

This was before Covid-19 and looking back now, it was like a prediction of something to come into the future.

“Anyhow, this inspired me in September 2019 to photographically record our rivers and bridges in Donoughmore in the historical context of Cork and Ireland during the period of the construction of these bridges.”

ULTIMATE THRILLER FILM REVIEW

By TADHG CURTIN Fred Zinneman’s The Day of The Jackal (1973) is a relentless, heart pounding masterclass in suspense.

This may very well be not only the greatest thriller of 1970s cinema but of any decade. It’s an adaptation of Frederick Forsythe’s book of the same name about the real life assassination attempt on President Charles de Gaulle in 1963 and the fictionalised planning of a second attempt by a group of OAS militants who hire the elusive ‘Jackal’ played superbly by Edward Fox, for the task while being pursued by authorities scrambling to thwart his mission.

The term ‘thriller’, has never been more applicable for a film. And yet, like its elusive main character, it is methodical and takes it time. We see a man meticulously putting his plan together, step by step, adapting

accordingly when the plan alters all the while the clock is ticking… It’s absolutely riveting.

Veteran director Zinneman shoots it in a documentary style with no musical score but it works completely. The rest of the cast is also fantastic, featuring Michael Lonsdale, Derek Jacobi, Delphine Seyrig and Ireland’s own Cyril Cusack as the Gunsmith.

Historically, we all know how it turns out and yet this is so well crafted, you become lost in its drive, forgetting real life and losing yourself

in what will happen next. The story was remade in 1997 and was overblown and bombastic. Compare the scene in both where The Jackal tests out his newly acquired gun for the first time (I admit the scene in the remake is its best scene. It’s so gloriously over the top, it transcends it). The original is exceptional. THE gold standard of the thriller genre and unfortunately the clichéd dictum ‘they don’t make ‘em like they used to’. I really wish they would.

WHEN NOT TO AVOID NETTLES...

Nettle (neanntog as gaeilge) is one of the most common edible wild plants in this part of the world. It grows just about anywhere, and is one of the most nutritious wild vegetables. It can’t be beaten for its nutritive salts and vitamin content.

When eaten young, it makes a tasty and succulent vegetable. If you like your greens, you’re sure to like nettles. Use them in the same way you would use spinach: wilted and buttered as a simple side dish, or added to your pastas or soups.

But care should be taken! Always wear gloves when dealing with raw nettles, and only the tops and newest leaves should be picked.

This should be done well before the plant begins to flower in June. After this it becomes coarse and inedible, and can have a laxative effect.

While nettles can be used in a variety of dishes too numerous to list (pesto, cordials, and salads to name just a few!), here are a couple of simple starts.

As a vegetable: Put the washed nettle tops in a pan boiling salted water. Cook for 15 minutes. Drain it, add salt pepper and butter and chop altogether over a low heat. Serve.

Nettle tea: 1 cup of nettles (washed in warm water); 4 cups of water; sugar or honey (optional). Put the nettles in a large saucepan with the water and add the sugar or honey (if using). Bring to the boil, simmer for 15 minutes. Strain and serve. For ice tea, put the tea aside for 30 minutes, and then transfer to the fridge for two hours. Serve with ice.

Nettle soup: 1 large potato (diced); 1 onion (chopped); 2 handfuls of nettles; 550ml stock; 275ml milk or plant-derived substitute. Sweat the potato and onion in butter until the onion turns translucent. Then add the nettles and the stock. Simmer for 20 minutes. Then put through a blender. Add the milk/plant-derived substitute and adjust the seasoning to taste.

Atlantic salmon are anadromous which means they spend the first part of their lives in freshwater and

then migrate to sea to mature before returning to their home river to spawn. The salmon leaves the river at the smolt stage which is a 1 to 3-year-old salmon and return at their adult stage as either a grilse, which is one year at sea, or as a multi sea winter salmon which has spent more than one year at sea without returning to freshwater. This means that the salmon caught by an angler in Boherbue has spent some of its life in the Araglen, and

The Munster River Blackwater and its tributaries are world-famous for salmon angling. These rivers are excellent for reproduction of Atlantic salmon as they have silt-free gravel beds which are vital for salmon spawning. As Atlantic salmon are declining across Europe, Duhallow rivers are important for the survival of the species and must be kept in pristine condition. Projects such as the Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP and Duhallow Water Biodiversity Training will be key to ensuring the health of our rivers and our Atlantic salmon.

SPACE TRAVEL TAKES MOXIE

By TREVOR O’DONOGHUE The future of space travel and space colonisation relies on using the resources of distant planets and asteroids to manufacture oxygen, water, fuel and building materials. What sounds like science fiction has recently become science fact. A small apparatus called MOXIE has manufactured breathable oxygen on the surface of Mars.

MOXIE, the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, is about the size of a toaster and lives on Perseverance, the recently landed Mars Rover.

MOXIE takes carbon dioxide from

Mars's atmosphere and converts it into oxygen. Not only is oxygen necessary to keep the astronauts alive, it is also a vital component of rocket fuel.

Space flight is very expensive.

Instead of hauling all the oxygen you need to breathe, and all the oxygen you need to help power your rocket on the return trip, it

makes a lot more sense to haul a larger MOXIE unit and make your oxygen on site.

So how much oxygen does a MOXIE make? In the recent experiment on Mars, the MOXIE unit produced just over five grammes in one hour. However, Nasa reckons that a MOXIE should be able to produce ten grammes of oxygen an hour. An astronaut, for comparison, needs about 30 grammes an hour, so that's three MOXIES needed to keep an astronaut in oxygen.

What about blasting four astronauts and their craft off the surface of Mars? That will take about 25 tonnes of oxygen, and for that, you will need a whole lot of MOXIE!

MAY IS THE MONTH OF MARY

This is made extra special this year as 2021 has been dedicated by Pope Francis as the year of St Joseph.

This month prompts people to make extraordinary efforts to honour Mary by erecting altars in their homes to pray to Mary.

The best way we can honour Mary is to pray the rosary. It was given to us by Our Lady and in all of her apparitions, she pleads with

us to pray the rosary every day.

She tells us it is so powerful it has the power to stop wars and it has. There are many stories of miracles that have happened as a result of praying the rosary.

No matter how anxious and troubled we may be, we find a peace that is very much lacking in our world today.

During this month of May, why not pray the rosary (even if you begin with one decade) when at home, or driving along in your car, or out about on your walk or where ever you are. It will change your life and the lives of those around you.

By CALEB O’CONNOR The first few sunny days are here, but Summer doesn’t truly begin until Bealtaine.

Bealtaine is the mid-point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice, but perhaps most importantly, it’s six months from Samhain.

While to Irish speakers, the word Bealtaine simply translates to May, Bealtaine as a celebration ushers in the light of the year. Much like other celebrations, it was a night for dancing and feasting. Bonfires spiralled into the air, often two or more to a town, like a blazing trail through communities.

Households would quench their hearth to relight it with this new, cleansing fire, and as long as that fire was kept going through the night, that house would be blessed with new luck for the year. But the luck was not limited to humans.

While on their way to new Summer pastures, farmers herded their cattle to the blaze, and between the two, herds were cleansed of parasites and blessed by plumes of smoke. Milk, fertility, health; all were promised by the fire.

You could have been promised the same (save for the milk perhaps) with a leap over the blaze!

In a change for Irish custom, Bealtaine asked us to pull away from accepting favours.

The stories say that if you did so much as give your neighbours some milk, your luck went with it, and those who asked for a favour on Bealtaine were looked upon with a suspicious eye.

Much like Samhain, the veil between the living and the other is thin on Bealtaine, and through it, fairies would poke their mischievous heads. They were placated by hawthorn sprigs over doors (never inside!) and a spill of milk across the threshold. A small bunch of May flowers – bluebells and primroses and even a cut of furs – on the step would help keep them away.

walk through it or to wash one’s face with it was said to be a cure for the year.

Even now, it is easy to get caught up in the mystique of it all.

But it wasn’t only a night of craic; for many, this was when rent was due, when contracts ended, and when courting commenced ahead of the winter marriage season.

Through it all, we see one thing: Renewal. A self-care day, of sorts.

Every tradition and ritual renewed us for the coming year, prepared us for the worst, and, in times like these, that feels more relevant than it has in most of our liftimes.

For the modern times, this could be a second chance at resolutions, or even the small nudge we need to make new ones.

Let Bealtaine be your fresh start, your renewal. You don’t need to light a bonfire. Set your flowers on the step, take a walk in the morning dew, and ask the dawn for what luck it has spare.

Harmony in a multi-cat home Every cat believes that they are the king or queen of their own castle. They are solitary, territorial creatures, and every resource, be that food, water, a soft bed or the prime spot curled up on the favourite human’s lap, are things that they consider their right as the cat of the household.

Problems ensue if a new cat joins the household, making it a ‘multi-cat household’, because cats simply aren’t good at sharing. All cats are pre-programmed to be focused on making sure they have the essential ingredients for a happy life within their territory, and when their territory is invaded by a new cat, they see this as their access to key resources being threatened.

Make sure you have one more litter tray than the number of cats in the household. i.e. if you have three cats, have four litter trays. Cats don’t like sharing toilets with each other and their scents. If you don’t provide enough litter trays, they will begin to pee elsewhere. On the sofa for example!

If tensions are particularly strained, consider using calming pheromone diffusers such as ‘Feliway’ diffusers to create a more chilled cat environment.
