Gardening tips by Rachel Budd, Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Community Garden

Don’t fall behind on tidying October is here already, and it is the month for tidying up the garden and ensuring everything is prepared for the winter to follow.

The weather has not been helpful in regard to cutting the lawn, but if it is dry at all it’s worth trying to get a cut done now. Keep the mower set high, you don’t want to cut the grass too short at this time of year or you will encourage moss and low growing weeds to establish.

You can mow fallen leaves into your lawn and leave them to rot down with the grass, they are a fantastic soil conditioner, and will help aerate the lawn and provide organic matter to boost the earthworm population.

Alternatively, fallen leaves can be collected and stored in any open container, the big ton bags for sand etc are ideal, or you could bang in four posts and wrap with chicken wire. Anything to prevent the leaves blowing away, but that will allow them to get wet. Leave them alone for a year and you will have leaf mold.

Don’t cut your grass too short at this time of the year; below, a goldfinch drainage, it will hold a sandy soil together to retain moisture. You can add it to compost to improve seed germination and root growth, use it as a mulch to suppress weeds, and best of all it’s free.

Don’t collect leaves from a woodland floor, they are part of the natural eco system, but driveways, paths, lawns, drains and gutters provide plenty throughout the autumn. They are best collected while wet, which shouldn’t be a problem!

Giving flower beds a really good weeding is very beneficial at this time of year. It will save you work in the spring, and will allow your perennials room to emerge without competition.

It also helps that at this time of year, you know where your flowering plants are so you don’t weed them out by accident. We’ve all done it!

Although it is often suggested that perennials be cut back at this time of year, it would be better to leave old flowering stalks and seed heads standing.

next season, those seed heads are a valuable food source for birds and small mammals.

You will often see flocks of goldfinches or long tailed tits coming to feed on the seed heads of plants like teasels, elecampagne, snapdragons and sunflowers.

The old stalks can also protect newly emerging growth from frosts in the spring and can be cut back once the new growth is strong.

Culture Night: Sliabh Luachra Music and Dance was alive and well on 20th September as part of Culture Night in Toureencahill Community Centre, which was held in association with Kerry County Council Arts office. Young and old came out on the night with music and dance performances aplenty, including a few tunes from local TD Danny Healy Rae.

Down Memory Lane

Remembering Eamon Kelly Even in this age of easy, mass communications through a huge variety of media, a person who is able to tell a story in an entertaining manner is still welcome in any company.

Picture then how it was in previous generations, especially in the days before electricity, radio and television were invented. That’s the world that’s depicted in Eamon Kelly’s stories; a time when people gathered round turf fires on winter nights listening to a storyteller, or seanchai, who could keep them amused for hours.

The seanchai filled the role of a library or newspaper and he (almost always a man!) was also a local historian and genealogist with the ability to trace family trees.

Sometimes, the stories went back to the times of the Fianna and dealt with other aspects of Irish mythology. But, more often, they were about everyday events like the price of cattle at a fair in Knocknagree, Yanks coming home, someone moving away from a locality to get married or to take up a job in Cork or Dublin.

Eamon Kelly drew much of his inspiration from everyday happenings and often built his stories around funny incidents or anecdotes, giving full vent to his fertile imagination to, in his own words, “put a good face to a story”.

Ireland’s greatest storyteller to get birthplace tribute and mortar (he was, after all, from a family of builders) for some of his material and local placenames like Reanasup, Toormore, or Bealnadeega peppered the stories.

House dances were common early in the 20th century and were, at one stage, banned by clergy.

Some people, however, were undeterred and continued to have their ball-nights and other events that involved dancing in their homes.

Fellows were asked to stand outside houses as sentries on the lookout for priests who might be coming up a boreen to ‘raid’ such houses.

On one such night the alarm was raised at a house dance in Eamon’s side of the country. There was an immediate rush for the back door to avoid the priest who usually came in the front door.

One woman, Moll Sweeney, was the last one out of the house and she collided with the parish priest coming in the back against her. He almost crashed to the ground and put his two hands around Moll to keep himself from falling and destroying his clothes in the dirty yard.

herself from the priest who had a tight grip on her.

“Will you leave go of me. Will you stop, I said. Stop I’m telling you,” she cried out. “Take your two hands off me whoever you are and isn’t it hard up you are for your ‘hoult’ and the priest coming in the front door.”

Such stories will be recalled at the annual Eamon Kelly Weekend in Gneeveguilla, on October 5-6.

Local schoolchildren are being encouraged to continue with the storytelling tradition in Kelly’s native Sliabh Luachra, which is best known for its poets and its rich store of traditional music, song and dance.

Kelly, who was born in Gullane, Gneeveguilla, in 1914 and died in 2001, drew from the area’s lore for many of his stories which were largely based on rural life in the final quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century.

The weekend programme, based in Teach Failte, Gneeveguilla, is supported by the local history society, Cumann Luachra. ‘’As well as remembering Eamon Kelly, the aim of the weekend is to encourage local talent and achievements and to promote storytelling and the cultural heritage of Sliabh Luachra,’’ said Cormac Collins, organising committee chairman.

Killarney-based seanchai and entertainer Ray O’Sullivan will visit local schools next week and, on Saturday October 5, will conduct storytelling workshops for children between 11am and 1pm.

On Saturday night at 8.15, there will be music, song, dance and storytelling, in Teach Failte, with Ray O’Sullivan as MC. On Sunday, Donal Hickey, editor of the Sliabh Luachra Journal, will guide a tour of some important historical sites in the area. A free bus is being provided and those taking part are asked to assemble at the Eamon Kelly monument in Gneeveguilla village at 11am.

Kilshannig GAA: Our U6s, U7s and U8s have been enjoying themselves over the last couple of weeks with both football and hurling blitzes.

Our U9s hurling team played a great game of hurling on Saturday, September 28th against Clyda Rovers in Mourneabbey. They had a great morning and well done to all involved. Our U10s hurling team played very well against Donoughmore the same day in Donoughmore. Great game and well done to all. Our U11s will have a few more games of both hurling and football before the season finishes. The U12 football team played the Central U12 G2 Semi-Final against Mallow on Saturday, September 28th, coming out winners in a very tough but exciting game. They will now play Grenagh in the Final G2 Central Football Competition in the coming weeks. The County U14 hurling Semi-Final against Newcestown is taking place on Sunday, October 6th at 4pm in Ballincollig. Best of luck to all

Congratulations to Kilshannig’s Under 16 Hurlers who had a great win last Sunday in the county championship quarter final in Bishopstown v Ahan Gales involved. Our U18 football team are playing in the Division 1 Plate Final in the coming week. Well done to all the above, trainers, mentors and especially the children, and best of luck to all involved in games in the coming weeks.

Bweeng Trailblazers blaze a trail in the Italian mountains After months of preparation by all members, the Bweeng Trail Blazers took part in the Master Mountain Running Championship in Bari Italy last weekend.

This is an annual event organised by the WMRA with IAAF patronage.

The team had great success with Donal Collins putting in an outstanding performance along with other members of the Irish team which overall earned them a well-deserved podium spot and a Silver medal.

By Kevin Quaid, author of Lewy Body Dementia Survival and Me I am Kevin Quaid and first of all I would like to tel you a small bit about myself.

I am 56 years old and living in Kanturk, however I am a native of Broadford, Co Limerick and a member of the Quaid family who have been connected with Limerick hurling for the past 80 years.

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s over three years ago and about six months later I was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia.

I am delighted to be writing some articles for this beautiful new magazine Discover Duhallow and I hope that some of my experiences and the experience of other people I have met over the last couple of years might be of some help to you or a loved one.

Dementia is a horrible disease, but it is nothing to be ashamed of. The sad thing is that there is still a terrible stigma surrounding dementia and we need to break free from that. The statistics of this disease are frightening, there are currently around 100,000 people in Ireland who have dementia and there are 11 new cases being diagnosed each and every day.

There are also about 5,000 people with what we call young onset dementia and that means people who are under the age of 65. I know of people in their 30s, 40s and 50s who have one form or another of dementia and there are about 400 different types of dementia.

The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s and it’s the one that most people will have heard about. When people hear the word dementia they automatically think of memory problems and while this is true for Alzheimer’s patients, memory problems are not a major concern for me at the moment, as I have Lewy Body Dementia.

The word dementia is an umbrella term that covers all types of dementia, just like cancer is a word that covers a wide variety of

Breaking free from stigma of dementia that disease. When I was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, I didn’t have a clue what it was, how bad it was or indeed how long I would live with it. I remember hearing the word progressive and incurable and when you hear that, it can be a tough one to take and it took a while to sink in.

For the first couple of months both Helena, my wife and full time carer and myself struggled with what we were told and how it would impact on our lives.

The biggest help that we got was from my GP. Dr Donal O’Riordan in Kanturk.

He put me in touch with our local dementia advisor who is Amy Murphy. Amy made an appointment for us to meet with her in the Memory Room in Mallow and there we had a cup of coffee with her and discussed our needs and, indeed, our future. She recommended that we get involved with the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland on 1800 341 341, which we did. We both became members of their working group

and I can honestly say that our lives changed that day for the better.

As time was going by I was beginning to look for proper information about Lewy Body Dementia and to my surprise, there was very little information on the subject, especially for someone in their early 50s and so I began to take notes and keep a diary for my Neurologist and her Doctors. One of her Doctors said to me at one of my many appointments that I should write a book about my experiences with this disease and so my first book called Lewy Body Dementia Survival and Me was published. It’s the story of my life and how we as a family coped with the fact that we all had been dealt such a horrible blow.

I found that I had a love of writing and write for a local newspaper. I am currently on my second book and that book is about how to live well with dementia, especially when you have been diagnosed at an early age. I hope to talk about different topics each time and continue to give you more of our story, so until next time stay safe and look after one another. Community Hall: The hall committee will hold a Tractor and Vintage Run – old and new tractors, cars and motorcycles – leaving from Castlemagner Church car park on Sunday, November 3rd. Registration in hall from 11am, run starts after pipe band parade at 12 noon.

Cairdeas Childcare: Ballyhass goes wild Over the past few years, we have been developing our outdoor play area here in Cairdeas Childcare, Ballyhass. It includes a playground with a climbing frame, a tarmac area for bikes and games and a grass area for ball games and other outdoor activities. We have a greenhouse with raised beds for planting and sand play, as well as outdoor raised beds for planting.

In the past 12 months, with the support of funding from Cork County Council – Local Agenda21 Environmental Partnership Fund, we have added a planting area creating a spiral walkway. This gives the children the opportunity to experience the scents, shapes and colours of the plants, flowers and shrubs and to see the various insects and butterflies that have been attracted to the plants.

We have included colourful bird boxes, a bug hotel and a beehive to the area to encourage biodiverRefreshments, raffles and music in hall. All welcome.

Tidy Towns: We would like to thank all volunteers who have helped. The shrubbery on the approach to the village got a total revamp. Two flower beds at the base of the wel-

sity. The work has been intergenerational with members of the community, family members, staff, directors and children, all involved in the selection of planting and the sourcing of a variety of seeds, bulbs and new plants.

The children were involved in planting and nurturing the seeds, plants and bulbs over the winter and were thrilled to see the beautiful garden that developed.

Products were sourced locally where possible and we were delighted to receive some plants and seeds, donated by Lidl, from Castlemagner Community Development Association. come signs are in full bloom. The local graveyard has been looked after with great care.

Congratulations to Castlemagner’s Michelle Finn on competing with Team Ireland in the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

Three Paddys are helping to keep history alive Castlemagner Sinsir Club, which meets in the community centre each Thursday from 12 noon to 2pm, shows videos of local events and places of local historic interest recorded by the award winning producers known locally as The Three Paddys.

The Paddy’s have recently been awarded national fame in DCU for their knowledge of surfing the net through Age Action Ireland. They each received an iPad, iPhone, and a

laptop for their endeavours. We congratulate them and wish them years of continued work, especially with the elderly – resurrecting memories of days gone by, editing, photographing and scanning photographs.

In recent years, Castlemagner Sinsir Club launched their book, Castlemagner Pictorial Memories. This event was a part of Discover Duhallow - A Day Of The Region. The book is a gallery of faces, places and

events in the parish dating from the 1800s to recent days. It evokes fond memories of people, events and the lifestyle of Castlemagner people in times past. The production was undertaken by members of the Sinsir Club, who felt it was an opportune time to record these pictures and put them all together. This project was a huge commitment and there are still books available, for €20 each.

Donoughmore & Firmount

Local children raise money for Marymount Hospice Children from the two local primary schools presenting their donation to Paul Ryan, a representative from the Friends of Marymount fundraising committee

Donoughmore Marymount Fundraising Group held a very successful night on Thursday 19th September. As usual it was very well supported and the figure raised to date is €12,679.74. There were numerous raffle prizes and two laptops were also auctioned.

The children from the two local primary schools had a ‘no uniform’ day and contributed handsomely to the amount raised. The local vegetable group brought some of their produce and there was great demand on the night. Home baking was a huge seller and was in plentiful supply. Other items included bric a brac and books.

The Committee would like to say a huge thank you to all our supporters. We hope to celebrate our 25th year in 2020.

Donoughmore Ladies Football: Our Junior team started training on the 6th January this year and reaped the rewards of all their hard work when they won the Junior A County Final on September 22nd. Their opponents were Valley Rovers who have been finalists in the previous two County Finals. Donoughmore were determined and worked hard throughout the game to come out

The winning Junior team of Donoughmore Ladies Football club on top by two points. The final score was Donoughmore 1-16 to Valley Rovers 2-11. Donoughmore are now through to the Munster Club series. Congratulations to all!

Readathon: Well done to all who

were involved in the Readathon in Firmount NS, the proceeds of which have resulted in fabulous new shelving installed in the school library. Beautifully designed and fitted by Damien Desmond.

The Danielle Forde Perpetual Tournament was held in Donoughmore in August. For the first time in the history of the tournament, Donoughmore team won the tournament.

They were playing Eire Óg in the Final. It was a very poignant win for our club.

Kanturk Kanturk and District Trout Anglers recently held a successful trout flyfishing competition at Lough Lein, Killarney. Results: 1st John O’Sullivan; 2nd Joe O’Connor; 3rd Michael Twohig; 4th Declan O’Sullivan; 5th Jerry O’Sullivan; 6th Arthur Murphy; 7th John Lyons.

Heaviest trout: Arthur Murphy.

Kanturk Rugby Club was a hive of activity last Sunday and proved to be a great family day out and full of action where a number of different matches took place. The Kanturk 2nds played a friendly against Killarney RFC. The U11s and U12 minis both had the opportunity to showcase their talents and The big game of the day featuring the opening game of the Munster Junior League where Kanturk faced off against Charleville. The day’s proceedings finished with a presentation to two club players who have recently played at Munster level: Sarah Murphy, who captained the Munster U18 girls squad which won the Inter Provincial title; Dylan O’Connor was the first ever player in Kanturk RFC to be capped in a Munster Schools team.

Congratulations also to the Kanturk U10s who took part in a blitz in the Aviva Stadium recently. A great honour for all the players, coaches and parents. They were one of 20 teams selected from over 1,000 teams who entered. Well done to all involved.

Kanturk Cycle Club: Hearty congratulations to members of O'Leary Stone Cycling Club who were U13 and U14 winners at the National Youth Cycling Championships in Mullingar.

Kanturk Soccer Club would like to thank all our volunteers, without them our club could not succeed.

It’s never a bridge too far Part 1 of 2, from the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland Bridge is an elegant game with many layers. It involves maths and strategy and tactics. If you want to stimulate your grey cells sit at a bridge table.

In bridge, there is almost endless staying on top of things. You have to keep a lot of numbers in your head: how many points in your hand and how many your partner may have. And then there is the soul of bridge: the bidding. You have to know what your partner’s bids mean in terms of total points and number of suits — 1 club, 1 spade, 1 no trump, 2 hearts, etc.

And the most challenging aspect: your response. What does your partner's bid mean and how do you respond?

Then there is the actual playing of the hand. You have to monitor what cards are played, especially your partner's (a low card may mean something, a certain suit something else), the number of trumps still out, what high cards your opponents have, etc. It is a constant mental ping-pong match.

Research has long shown that ongoing mental engagement can lower your risk of dementia. But the kind of social interaction and group get-togethers that bridge provides may also be a key to a longer, healthier life. A new report published by the National Academy of Sciences says "social isolation and loneliness are associated with increased mortality."

Another new study in the journal Nature Neuroscience discovered that isolation reduced the production of myelin, a protective nerve fibre, and could contribute to mental illness. The game has benefits for older adults as well. Over the years, several research studies released

by Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University found that “playing chess, bridge or a musical instrument significantly lowers the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia”. If you’re neither young, nor at risk of dementia, there are still benefits. A study by the University of California, Berkeley, found that playing contract bridge leaves people with higher numbers of immune cells.

Bridge is about partnerships. To be successful you have to work as a team. Communication is essential.

It is this human factor that sets it apart from other games. People enjoy how bridge makes them interact with others.

Says one dedicated player: “There is little conversation during play.

have to communicate through my bidding. It's like speaking another language. When we begin to play the hand, again in silence, I watch what cards she discards. I know she is trying to tell me something — urging me to play a certain card.

I do the same in return. And when she bites her index finger, I can hear a thousand thoughts running through her head. They are the same as mine.”

A study commissioned by the English Bridge Union at St Paul’s School in Manchester clearly shows a positive development of the young people involved. This study focused more on social skill development, rather than improvements of a purely academic nature.

Bridge is a bargain. All you need for a bridge game is a deck of cards and three other people. You can play at your local club, where you’ll enjoy a three-hour session of bridge for just a few Euro. If you have a computer, you don’t even need to leave home.

Bridge is fun. Of all the reasons to learn the game, the most important is that it’s just fun to play. It offers the suspense of poker, the cerebral qualities of chess and the excitement of athletic sports, all in a sociable setting where you’re a participant, not just a spectator.

Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit.

It takes only a little knowledge to begin playing bridge. But no matter how many years you play, the learning process will never end.

Bridge also caters to all physical conditions and disabilities, so players can actively pursue their pastime throughout their entire lives.

The Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club is on a roll The Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club juvenile road-racing calendar has come to an end for 2019.

The last competitive events held were the Kerry County League and the Munster Championships.

In the Kerry County league, Keenan Dennehy was second under 12 with Sean P Fleming and Nicholas Buckley also completing.

Aidan Morley and Amy Fleming were both second Under 14.

Denis O’Connor raced well in the A3 Adult section getting on a break and finishing well up the field.

Aidan Morley, who finished the season very strong, topped the week off well with a bronze U14 Munster Medal in Blarney.

Well done to our Juveniles, their coaches and parents. From Coalisland to Errigal, Drogheda

to Fermoy, our Juveniles have travelled the four corners of Ireland this year representing the Club.

The Club is planning a further recruitment drive around Christmas. Please contact the club or any of our members if you or anyone you know is interested in learning more about cycling.

The cyclocross season will be kicking off over the next few weeks and we encourage all our members to have a go at this also.

€1.45m Banteer Project Ireland 2040 Amenity is well underway

A 3D image of the new astroturf pitch superimposed on the existing facility Banteer Community Sportsfield and Park is a community owned facility which is used by all people for all sports – ladies’ football, camogie, GAA, soccer, athletics, walkers, sports days, Macra Field days and other sports.

The Banteer community has developed a range of facilities on this site over the years with grant support from IRD Duhallow LEADER, Cork County Council and Sports Capital funding as well as significant local fundraising. In the last 20 years, over €800,000 has been spent in developing the pond Field and Park, a fully accessible and lit walkway and a playground which compliments the fine pitch and accessible stand in this community venue.

The facility is community owned and developed and serves all the communities of Banteer, Lyre, Nadd, Kilcorney and the

surrounding Duhallow areas.

Banteer community has won numerous awards including AIB Better Ireland award and National Tidy Towns Wildlife award and a Duhallow Business Award.

Pat Buckley of EPS and an active Banteer community member, explains their latest major project, a €1.45M regulation sized astroturf pitch which will be available for all sports plus a new building with changing rooms, toilets, disabled facilities, spectator stand area, museum and tea rooms.

With IRD Duhallow as the lead applicant, a major grant of €1.128M was approved in February 2019 towards the development project from the Government’s Rural Regeneration and Development fund, Project Ireland 2040 through the Department of Community and Rural Development.

Erection of lighting in progress 80% funding and the community will still need to raise about €285,000 of matching funds to complete the full project. This fundraising work is well underway with local sponsorship and ticket draws.

Denis Withers, who spearheaded the project, outlines their progress: “Construction began on the astroturf pitch project in mid-June after the tendering process was completed, with Kelly Brothers Ballydesmond appointed the main contractor and McSherry Electrical Mallow as the lighting sub-contractors. The facility is on schedule to be completed in November this year. The new building has gone to tender and we expect that part of the project will be starting in the next couple of months, once final designs and the tender process is completed.”

ments at Banteer Sports, the song is well known and is of course a Duhallow anthem nowadays. Much of this archive has been donated by Gerry Sheehan of Avonmore Electrical and founder of IRD Duhallow.

In a rural region like Duhallow and North Cork, sporting clubs have less opportunity to avail of top quality facilities and this new development will improve the training opportunities for all clubs.

This will be the first regulationsized, community-owned astroturf facility for all sports in Cork and will serve neighbouring counties of Kerry, Limerick, South Tipperary and West Waterford.

Maura Walsh, CEO of IRD Duhallow, believes the facility will

have a positive impact on domestic tourism and additional visitors to Banteer – which already has a park area, pitches, walks and children’s playground – from its opening early next summer.

She said: “The accessibility offered by the adjacent train station and N72 roadway will encourage visitors of all ages as well as users of the facility. It will also make the existing facilities and the village more sustainable as well as open up possibilities for new businesses in Banteer.

“This is just the type of project envisaged by Project Ireland 2040, projects that will not only succeed in their own right, but will kick-start small rural village economies.”

Where there’s a will, there’s a way A Will is a legal document which sets out your wishes for everything you had possessed after your death. To make a Will, you must be over 18 years of age and legally capable of understanding what a Will is and what assets you own.

There are rules involved in making a Will and you should follow each step closely so the Will is legal. These include the Will must be in writing and be signed by you in the presence of two witnesses who also sign your Will.

Everyone should have a Will, which should clearly state how your assets are to be distributed so to avoid any possible family disputes, costly court proceedings and to minimise the amount of tax the government acquires. When you have a child with special needs then there is a greater risk of your child’s future being negatively impacted without the

right Will and Trust in place.

If you don’t make a Will, the laws of intestacy (Succession Act 1965) will apply. These are the rules which determine the order in which your assets are distributed between your family, without considering their circumstances and what you may wish to happen.

Even if you feel you have very little assets, you need to make a Will and when you have a child with additional needs you should open a Special Needs Trust.

After the age of 16 if your child receives means-tested payments such as Disability Allowance or Medical Card then even a small amount of money in their name could potentially reduce or stop their access to entitlements.

Support packages funded by the HSE or Service Providers may be cut, leading to any inheritance

funds being used to pay for services until that money runs out.

Another reason could be that your child may not have sufficient financial capacity to manage an inheritance. The emotional distress of losing a parent will likely compound this, leaving them susceptible to financial abuse.

This can result in the need for an application to the Court to be appointed to manage their inheritance – and the Court may make decisions that don’t reflect your wishes. For more information, log on to financialwellbeing.ie.

Don’t put off your Letter of Wishes A Letter of Wishes is essentially a document outlining your dreams and aspirations for your son or daughter with special needs when you have passed away.

It is not legally binding, unlike your Will. However, it does provide valuable information that can help the next caregivers understand what they can do to improve the quality of your child’s life.

Nobody knows or understands your child better than you and it is vital that you pass on this knowledge to your child’s Guardians and Trustees.

When starting to write your Letter of Wishes, it can be overwhelming in trying to cover all the bases. Here are some ideas: g Child’s education needs g Living arrangements both short term and long term g Key people and relationships you want to be nurtured

g Information on current and future entitlement for your child g Information on your Special Needs Trust g Instructions for the Trustee in the proper use of money left in the Trust g Guidance on what to do when circumstances change g But most importantly document your child’s passions, joys, hobbies and your future aspiration for your child’s life.

It is not easy and nobody likes to think about how their son or daughter will cope when their parents are not around but it is vital you finish your first draft. That is the hard part and all you have to do is keep adding to it as time goes by.

Don’t keep your Letter of Wishes a secret, share it with your family and sit down with your nominated Guardians and Trustees and have a frank conversation around the future. You need to send a copy of this document to your solicitor to ensure it aligns with your Will.

It is also very important that you regularly review your Letter of Wishes and update it as circumstances change. It is vital that parents of special needs children have their Wills, Trusts and Letter of Wishes tied together.

Vigil Mass: We have recently been informed that, from October 1st, Lyre will have a Vigil Mass on Saturday night at 7.30pm. There will no longer be a Sunday morning Mass. This is the first time in the history of Lyre church that we will not have a Sunday morning Mass.

Other Mass times in the parish are, Sunday morning: Kilcorney, 10am; Banteer, 11.30am and again at 7pm. There will no longer be a Vigil Mass in Banteer on Saturday evening.

Take care: We are encouraging all road users to be extra careful when driving through Lyre, especially at school times, with mornings getting darker and weather conditions darkening as winter approaches.

Bird enthusiasts will be delighted to hear this news about eagles, from which Nadd derived its name ie Nead an Fhiolair: two types of eagle have been spotted in the vicinity of Naddbeg area. Great news and a welcome return for the renowned bird and we look forward to seeing more and the revival of what was thought to be the end of eagles in our neighbourhood.

Help the aged: As the winter approaches we encourage everybody to look out for elderly neighbours and those living alone, we owe a great deal of gratitude to the elderly as they were the people who saw harder times and gave us what we have today through education, our faith and prosperity.

Taking a summer stroll down memory lane During the summer, Lismire Community Association in conjunction with IRD Days in the Region project hosted a historical walk and talk around Kilcorcoran Cemetary and the old road and village of Coolavota.

Guiding careers for 16 years The annual Careers Exhibition took place in the Edel Quinn Hall Kanturk on Wednesday, October 2nd. For hundreds of students over the last 16 years, the annual careers exhibition has been the start of their journey into adult life.

Prospective students met a host of people working in the areas of further and higher education equipped to address a range of queries from module choices and what students expect post-graduation to employment prospects.

Founded in 2003, with a goal of strategically planning for the future of youth in the locality, IRD Duhallow’s Youth and Education Working Group has been instrumental in the provision of supports to children and young adults in Duhallow, including the careers exhibition.

The Youth and Education Working Group has initiated and supported an array of activities for primary and secondary schoolchildren along with adult learners in a rural area.

Membership of the Youth and Education Working Group is derived from the Education and Training Board, Gardaí, local youth groups, schools and sporting groups and clubs. The group has a wealth of experience in delivering projects that address the issues facing young people.

The working group has long recognised that choosing a career is one of the most important life decisions that a young person will ever have to make, and with this in mind students, parents, guardians and teachers were all invited to attend the 2019 Careers Exhibition.

This broad spectrum event saw an emphasis placed on supporting all students of all abilities to reach their full potential. On the day it was frequently reported to the organisers that it is not always possible for people to attend open days, particularly if they are occurring in institutes located far from home. Students indicated that this local event was most helpful in supporting them to

explore and narrow down their options. This was particularly important given that research shows that for every 10km a young person is from a higher educational institute the likelihood of participation in education decreases by almost 3%.

With this in mind, this event strives to alleviate geographic disadvantage through facilitating local students to meet with colleges from around the country and from abroad. Hosted in the central location of the Edel Quinn Hall, students were given the opportunity to see for themselves the plethora of options available and investigate fully other choices.

Some attendees on the day reported that they did not as yet know what they wanted to do once completing second level. Roisín Kelleher, Career Guidance Counsellor was in attendance to meet students on a one-to-one basis to offer additional support and advice on subject and course choice.

Information on HEAR & DARE assistance was also provided. The event afforded students the chance to ask plenty of questions and hear first-hand about key dates and entry requirements. Exhibitors spoke to students in relation to the facilities and learning resources available at

their respective institutions.

Young people were facilitated to explore different education and training options with a broad range of Third Level Universities, Institutes of Technology, Agricultural Colleges and Further Level Training Colleges in attendance.

From further afield, representatives from English universities were in attendance to introduce students to what is available abroad.

Overall, the takeaway message from this busy event is that your post-Leaving Cert learning and future career should be viewed as a journey. Progression from secondary school is one of the major milestones for all students and choosing what to do next is rarely an easy decision.

Most students will continue their education or enter training of some form and this event helped outline the many pathways available.

The 2019 Career’s Exhibition confirmed to all present that it is important students are ready for the entire journey, not just the first stop.

Gudgeon is more than a goujon Only the size of a chicken goujon, this gudgeon (gobio gobio), a widely unknown species of fish, is in fact quite a large example of its kind.

Gudgeon are not frequently recorded in Ireland and are often overlooked as part of our freshwater fish communities. This individual of the species was recorded during a river education event held on the Allow River by IRD Duhallow as part of the RaptorLIFE project.

Gudgeon forage on sandy and gravelly substrates in both fast and slow moving streams using the barbels on either corner of their mouths to detect their prey. They feed on a variety of invertebrates and have been known to graze on filamentous algae in Ireland. The species is not fished commercially or for sport in Ireland, however in Victorian and Edwardian times it was fashionable to fish for and fry gudgeon. Indeed the word goujon is derived from the French name for the fish.

A non-native species, gudgeon is thought to have been introduced to Ireland sometime after the 12th Century, however no documentary evidence of exactly when exists.

Indeed, much of what we know about gudgeon in Ireland was derived from research conducted on fish caught in the Allow and Blackwater catchments in 1971, however

the species has gone largely undetected in the Allow since then.

One of a number of species recorded on the day, this specimen of gudgeon brought unexpected excitement to the event because the distribution of the species in Ireland is so poorly documented. Other species recorded on the day included Atlantic salmon, brown trout, brook lamprey and the critically endangered European eel.

The river education event was held by IRD Duhallow for farmers participating in the RaptorLIFE project. These landowners on the Araglin and Blackwater rivers voluntarily fenced their sections of the river in order to exclude livestock, with the aim to improve water quality, restore riparian vegetation and stabilise rapidly eroding river banks.

Attending farmers had the opportunity to try their hand at casting and angling, but all were absorbed by the wealth of information being given by Andrew Gillespie of IFI on the invertebrates, salmonids and LIFE in the river. It is hoped that through learning and knowledge exchange that farmers will build a greater appreciation for river environments, taking ownership of

river protection in their local area, and encouraging others to do likewise. Inland Fisheries Ireland conducted electrofishing and Duhallow Angling Centre of Excellence assisted on the day.

IRD Duhallow RaptorLIFE have fenced off nearly 29km of river in the upper reaches of the Blackwater Special Area for Conservation.

Fencing river margins allows the banks to revegetate, thus stabilising areas that are rapidly eroding, further reducing siltation of the river substrate.

This in turn will help provide clean gravels for spawning salmonids and brook lamprey, and improve freshwater pearl mussel habitat and that of the critical growing stage of its juveniles known as glochidia.

This fenced area in itself becomes a new habitat of biodiversity.

Many of these farmers were provided with alternative drinking sources for their stock to restrict them from entering the river – this improves the water quality, eliminating the risk of eutrophication and algae on the riverbed, this too being detrimental to the spawning gravels of salmonids, brook lamprey and the habitat of the freshwater pearl mussel and its juveniles.
