Help at hand for Covid jabs Everyone in Duhallow breathed a sigh of relief throughout the last few weeks as we saw the roll out of the Covid 19 vaccine to the region’s elderly. This brings with it new hope and finally we can all see light at the end of the tunnel which has been marred with lockdowns and restrictions.

However, for many it poses the difficulty of how to get to the Vaccine Centres?

The good news is that Duhallow Care and Repair and Warmer Homes Programme has started a service where they collect people from their own homes to bring them to their GP surgery or centre to receive their vaccine.

Chair of IRD Duhallow’s Social Economy Working Group, Mary Wallace, commented that “we identified that some people in the locality were not able to get their

Support for community hubs The recently released Future of Work report shows that 72% of organisations have implemented remote working policies in the last year and the consensus is very much unanimous that remote working is here to stay.

This opens up the region of Duhallow to a huge number of white collar jobs, making the region a much bigger employer, with the added bonus of where people can have a fantastic quality of life in a rural setting.

Sheila Crowley, Secretary of Laharn Community Action CLG, where the region’s newest hub is located said: “We are delighted to see the Broadband Connection Point going live. It is a great boost for the local community and I would encourage all who need to use the facility to do so.

“I’m delighted to say that there are plans for the developments of further hubs in Kilbrin and Banteer in the coming months.”

GREEN LIGHT FOR GOLFING  Continued from page 1

Golf, tennis and children’s underage (under 18s) training – in pods of a maximum of 15 for team sports – will resume on April 26th as part of the easing of restrictions. Golf clubs will also be able to schedule junior camps in adhering to the pod system recommended.

Welcoming the news, Chairman of Newmarket Pitch & Putt Brendan Herlihy said: “How great it has been to finally get some positive news!

“We’ve been doing extensive work behind the scenes over the last number of months to ensure the pitch and putt course is in pristine condition and we look forward to welcoming people back to our club at the James O’Keeffe Institute.”

Rathmore/Gneeveguilla

Mary’s a charity hair-o Banteer native Mary Buckley celebrated her 24th birthday by participating in a Charity Shave or Dye. On April 1st she fearlessly shaved her head and raised a phenomenal amount of money for the Irish Cancer Society as well as donating the hair to Little Princess Trust.

The Little Princess Trust is a charity that provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their hair through cancer treatment and other conditions.

Mary said: “It was a tough decision to choose a charity to fundraise for, but I have chosen to support Irish Cancer Society as over the last year I have learned a lot about different

types of genetic cancers and how they affect my family. I think it’s important to learn about the services available in Ireland through the ICS and promote the research being done in this area as it will likely be a part of my life in the future.”

Mary put out an appeal to family and friends to please not buy her any presents, but instead donate to the fundraising drive.

Mary has already raised a staggering €7,500 for the Irish Cancer Society.

MILLSTREET CS UPDATES Artists Against Bullying: With the support of the NAPD Creative Engagement scheme, the present 5th year group have created a video with an antibullying theme, created with the help of Brian Crotty, using stop motion and other film-making techniques. The film features all the TY group and has a unique take on a vitally important message.

Live show: Our School, One World – Culture and Diversity will be going out live online in April. This event normally takes place in the school and will feature music, song, dance and opinions on culture, race and diversity in society, plus a few surprises.

CCDA and Tidy Towns hold AGM online For the first time ever, Castlemagner Community Development Association & Tidy Towns held their AGM online via Zoom. The good turnout, on April 6th, was appreciated especially as this was the first AGM of the CCDA and the first virtual AGM. Nuala Falvey opened the meeting, explaining that an AGM had not been held last year due to Covid restrictions and at that time a meeting held on Zoom would not have been feasible. She thanked the committee for their dedication during

the past two years. She said that a tremendous amount of work had been achieved in the community in a relatively short period of time.

The election of officers took place and for the coming year: Hazel Bourke was elected as chairperson.

A look back in time

DRISHANEBEG REMEMBERED Centenary date of train ambush commemorated On the 11th February 1921, men from Millstreet and the surrounding areas successfully carried out an audacious and meticulously planned operation against British soldiers travelling by train between Mallow and Killarney.

One of the Volunteer’s duties was to inspect the train and board it if it contained a suitable party of British forces. This evening he saw that the party of troops travelling was such as could be dealt with by the column. He boarded the train and travelled to Rathcoole where two armed Volunteers were waiting. At his signal they boarded the engine as the train was leaving the station and on arrival at the ambush position forced the driver to halt the train.

A long whistle blast was blown as a pre-arranged signal to the attacking party. A lighted bicycle lamp placed on the track indicated the exact position at which the engine should stop.

Fire was then opened upon the carriages containing the military party and the battle continued for about 15 minutes. The slopes of the cutting were lit by oil torches prepared in advanced by the column and thrown down outside the target carriages at the beginning of the encounter. The fight was one-sided from the start, with the attackers having the advantage of cover and darkness.

When the British surrendered one had been killed and most of the others were wounded.

The column members collected 14 rifles, 600 rounds of ammunition plus sundry equipment, before the train – with the wounded on board – continued to Killarney.

The arms that were captured at Drishanebeg proved to be of immense help in later engagements at Clonbanin and Rathcoole. This event was deemed one of the more successful engagements against the Crown Forces for the Millstreet

As a local event of historical significance, the Drishanebeg Train Ambush Commemoration Committee agreed that the memory of the event would be best preserved by compiling a record of all available information on the ambush and publishing it as a book for future reference; by erecting an information board near the site; and by having a public commemoration event to mark the Centenary Anniverary which, sadly, due to the Covid-19 regulations will have to be postponed until a more appropriate time.

The Committee’s request for help was supported in no small measure by many people who generously donated to fund these projects. The Committee is also grateful to Cork County Council for their generous grant aid.

The book, which is entitled Worth the Wait, has been printed by Kanturk Printers and is available to purchase locally. It brings together many sources of information and photographs, several of which have never been published before.

Top tips for a panel interview To prepare for a panel interview, there are some additional things you should do and keep in mind: Practice body language: Posture, keeping your hands and feet still etc are important to keep in mind. Most important though is maintaining eye contact with the whole panel, with more attention toward whoever is asking the current question; Ask questions: Show an interest.

Ask the interviewer if you can bring prepared questions in a notebook.

Take notes too but remember to make eye contact frequently; Ask who will be on the panel: Find out as much as you can before you go. How many people are you meeting with? What are their names and job titles? Who are the more senior-level people on the panel, such as your future boss?; Have multiple copies of your CV: You can hand out a copy of your CV to each person. This is an easy way

A STELLAR PASTIME

By TREVOR O'DONOGHUE Since time immemorial people have looked up at the night sky and tried to make sense of, and understand it. Pinpricks of light twinkling and glittering. Bright stars that seem to form patterns with neighbouring stars.

Harvests were made, seeds planted and fields ploughed on the rising and setting of particular patterns. These patterns are what we now call constellations. In simpler times, people spent more of their lives outside, were closer to nature, and so it is easy to understand how these stellar patterns held a special significance for cultures all over the world.

Amongst the heavens people placed their creation myths, tales of gods and demons, kings, queens, hunters and animals; and as civilisation progressed, tools of navigation and discovery, the sextant, octant, telescope and microscope all found a place in the heavens. There was no right and wrong and constellations evolved and changed as did the people who created them.

In 1922 the International Astronomical Union formally divided the sky into 88 fixed constellations, each with their own part of the sky. People no longer

use constellations as guides for when to plant or harvest, but they can still be used as a marker of time. As the Earth sweeps out in its yearly orbit around the Sun, the stars above change from season to season.

This time of year, as night falls, a familiar constellation/star pattern lies almost directly overhead. The Plough or Big Dipper looks like a frying pan with a curved handle.

It forms part of the constellation Ursa Major (The Great Bear). Once

familiar with the Plough, it can be used to find more constellations and items of interest.

The last two stars that make up the Plough are known as the pointer stars. An imaginary line drawn through these stars extends straight to the North Star (Polaris). This is the only star in the sky that doesn't appear to move and is always found directly north. The rest of the stars revolve around it. Polaris itself is a star in the constellation Ursa Minor (Little Bear).

Back to the Plough. If you follow the sweeping curve of the handle, you arrive at a bright star called Arcturus and if you keep going you reach another bright star, Spica.

“Arc onto Arcturus, speed onto Spica”. Arcturus is the lead star in the constellation of Bootes (the herdsman) and Spica is the lead star in the constellation Virgo (the virgin).

By TADHG CURTIN Francis Ford Coppola’s immortal Godfather trilogy (1972, 1974, 1990) ultimately shows that the world begins and ends with family.

What can I write in 300 words about the greatest saga in cinema history that hasn’t been said already. It chronicles the story of Mafia Don, Vito Corleone and his family, both through its domestic and organised crime aspects, during the 20th century.

The first part sees Vito as head of the Corleone crime family, the second showcases youngest son Michael as the Don in parallel with young Vito’s rise to power and the final part ends with an older Michael, reflecting on his legacy.

Years ago I showed my father the trilogy and he loved it. It made me contemplate how a man from rural Ireland could connect with a story

about an Italian American family linked to organised crime. Then it dawned on me, one word – family.

Sure, this is a trilogy where a man gets stabbed in the hand and garrotted, a horse's head ends up in a bed, but it’s also about a father’s relationship with his sons, their relationship with each other as well as with their wives and girlfriends, our legacy regarding our children and the future. This is why we relate to The Godfather, why it has endured.

Art is like wine. There are good

wines and great wines. The Godfather 1 & 2 are great wines, to be savoured and appreciated as exceptional works of art crafted by artists at the top of their game. The third, with all its flaws (recently recut

Artist in the frame

TRADITIONAL MAN Bryan O’Leary graduated from the University of Limerick with a BA in Irish Music in 2016 and an MA in Ethnomusicology in 2018.

Bryan has appeared on numerous television and radio programmes on RTÉ and TG4 down through the years. In more recent times he has featured on The Today Show with Daithí & Maura, and John Creedon’s Atlas of Ireland, both of which aired on RTÉ 1. He has also toured the world through his music and performed in the United States, Japan, China, the Netherlands and the UK. Tell us a little bit about yourself I come from a townland called Tureencahill in the heart of Sliabh Luachra. Since I began playing traditional Irish music at the age of 10, I have promoted the music of my local area both nationally and internationally.

What got you started in music?

I was exposed to Irish music from an early age, from being taken to my grandfather’s sessions. His passing in 2004 had a profound impact on me. I began to fully appreciate his music and legacy. On the day of his burial in Gneeveguilla, I told my mother I was going to start learning the accordion.

Highlight of your career to date?

Winning the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Young Musician of the Year Award in 2014 at the University of Limerick, 11 years after my grandfather won the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Lifetime Achievement Award at the same venue.

Who/what inspires you most?

The music from the past and of course in particular, my grandfather Johnny O’Leary. I still get greatly

inspired from listening the music of Sliabh Luachra greats such as Denis Murphy, Julia Clifford, and Pádraig O’Keeffe. Jackie Daly is a living legend of Sliabh Luachra music who I greatly admire. Away from the Irish music scene, I am greatly inspired on a daily basis by musicians such as John Lennon, Noel Gallagher, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Kerry’s own Christy Hennessy.

Tell us about your new album – Tranquility in Tureencahill I was delighted to launch my new EP recently, which is the first recording under the new Sliabh Luachra Label by Eoin Stan O’Sullivan from Newmarket. This recording features all of my own musical compositions, many of which were composed during the lockdown periods. In May I was one of ten traditional Irish musicians

commissioned by Aoife Nic Cormaic of RTÉ’s The Rolling Wave to compose some new music in response to the lockdown. This gave me the confidence to share some more of my compositional work with the public. One of the tunes I wrote for this programme which also features on my new recording is a waltz titled I’ll Meet You on a Day That Never Ends. I composed this in honour of all the people who have sadly passed on during this pandemic and also as a tribute to the frontline workers for their massive sacrifice and work. DO YOU KNOW YOUR ONIONS? It’s time to plant those onion sets if you want a bumper crop of large juicy onions from July onwards.

Onions are truly a staple crop in the garden, and are so easy that they make a great beginner’s crop.

It is very difficult to go wrong with onion sets. Stick them in the ground the right way up and away you go! Okay, there’s slightly more to it than that, but only slightly.

Onions are usually the first crop to be planted outside in March, closely followed by your early potatoes. To achieve full bulbing potential, ideally they should be planted by April, as the stems and leaves need to be well established

by May for them to begin bulking up. Cold doesn’t affect onions, they are very hardy, but try to avoid planting them in waterlogged ground as the sets will rot.

Onions like a rich, open soil; you can follow them behind potatoes in your rotation plan and they will benefit from the manure put down for the last season’s potatoes, or top feed them with a good homemade compost or well-rotted manure after planting.

For maximum size, space your onions a handspan apart or about 6 inches. (I’ve just measured my hand span, I have long fingers, it’s

lettuce between your onions. This means that there is no room for weeds, and lettuce has very low nutritional requirements so doesn’t compete with the onions.

And you have a bonus crop.

Everybody wins.

Plant your onion sets so that the top is just below the surface of the soil, they don’t want to go deep. You can even leave the top showing, but crows and magpies like nothing more than pulling out all your onions and leaving them lying on the surface. After you’ve put them all back in a couple of times you’ll learn just to keep the tips out of sight. And this is really the only problem you will face with onions. Slugs are not usually a problem, although they have been known to strip leaves and stems to nothing in a very bad year.

Don’t forget your crop rotation, and make sure your onion crop is moved each year. This will prevent the build up of soil-borne diseases like white rot.

VISUALISE YOUR PERFECT FUTURE As a self-employed yoga teacher and wellness advocate, I really try to take good care of myself, yet wintertime felt very tough this year.

From October to January, I felt very lonely, constrained and purposeless. I was also vitamin D deficient – thankfully an easy fix!

However, living through a pandemic helped confirm something I already knew deep within – I have a universal yearning for self-care and for true connection with ourselves and others. A yearning that if we can tap in to and explore, will help us not just survive but thrive. Yes, things are different now but we get to create our own ‘new normal’, I find that so exciting!

Vision boards dovetail perfectly with journaling, another of my go-to daily practices.

Journaling is my way of making sense of the world, a safe way of processing my thoughts and

emotions, of healing. It's 20 minutes of the day where I get to check in with myself, to have some me-time.

EAT SLOWER FOR BETTER RESULTS Next time you sit down to a meal, set a timer and see how long it takes you to eat your meal.

For many of us, it will be between 5-10 minutes. Ideally, we should be looking to spend anywhere between 15-30 minutes eating a meal.

Eating slowly can not only improve digestion but can also lead to eating smaller meals and consuming less calories overall.

Eating slowly gives your body time to recognise you are full. How many times have you wolfed down a meal and felt beyond stuffed 20 minutes later? The brain can take up to 20 minutes to send messages of satiety, so eating slowly can lead to eating less.

Eating quickly can cause poor digestion. We don’t tend to chew properly so the food isn’t broken

It can help to clean – not clean in the Mrs.Hinch sense, where we get great joy out of having a pristine home or sparkling teeth.

When we talk about clean in mental health what we really mean is having a balance in our lives in the following ways: n Connect: Connect with others, keep up contact with those around

us. It can be very easy to avoid meeting people now as we are encouraged to stay indoors, but we are not told to isolate away from all contacts. So join a Zoom quiz, start a Whatsapp group or meet people outdoors in a socially distanced way. n Learn: Try to learn a new skill, take up a new hobby, teach yourself something new. A lot of courses are now online, so use this opportunity to enrol in the course you always wanted to do.

Tips for reducing screen time Now more than ever before, we are seeing young children become increasingly dependent on screens for entertainment. Did you know that screen time is not recommended for children under the age of two?

Children aged two to five years are recommended to have up to one hour of screen time and for children over five years the recommended maximum is two hours. Many children are exceeding these.

Gluten-free bread recipe

By ALEX BOURKE A native of Duhallow, Alex trained in Galway and worked in some of Ireland’s most exciting restaurants before traveling through Asia and Australia and then becoming head chef of a vegan restaurant in Galway.

I got into gluten free cooking 11 years ago when I was diagnosed with wheat intolerance. My biggest issue back then – which I think is a problem most people trying to reduce gluten in their diets face – was BREAD. It was and still is sometimes very hard to find a decent loaf of tasty, non-crumbly gluten free bread.

Over the years I have tried countless recipes, but this has to be my favourite so far, not only is it gluten free, but it is also vegan, delicious and hardy enough to hold together for a sandwich.

As a bonus it is a lot easier to make than the recipes available for most gluten free breads.

In order to be sure it is gluten free, you will need to buy gluten free oats. Oats by nature do not contain gluten but can often be grown and processed near cereals containing gluten which causes the oats to be contaminated.

This delicious loaf will yield about ten good slices and can be sliced and then frozen.

Ingredients 310 ml lukewarm water – around 37 degrees Celsius n 250ml soy milk – you can use regular milk if you prefer n 2 ¼ tsp dried fast action yeast n 2tsp caster sugar n 228g gluten free flour – I use Doves Farm n 160g gluten free oat flour – I buy gluten free oats and grind them up in a blender n 65g cornmeal or polenta n

1 ½ tsp salt 60g ground flaxseeds – again, you can buy whole and grind your own n 2tbsp rapeseed or vegetable oil n 2tbsp honey or maple syrup n Gluten free oats to finish. n

Method Preheat oven to 180 degrees n Grease and line a two-pound loaf tin or two one-pound tins with greaseproof paper. n Put an oven-proof dish of water on the bottom of the oven – this will help to create a more humid environment for your bread. n Mix your oat flour, gluten free flour, yeast, cornmeal, sugar, flaxseeds and salt together in a large bowl. Try to avoid the yeast touching the sugar and salt as they can damage the yeast. n

Give it all a good stir for about five minutes, it is a very wet dough but the flax seeds will get it to tighten up a little. n Pour the dough into your lined tin and sprinkle with the gluten free oats. n Cover lightly and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, this can rise quickly so once you see it coming up to the top of the tin, it is time to bake. n Put it in the oven above the container of water and bake for 45 minutes. n Remove from the tin, take off the paper and put back in the oven upside down for 10 minutes until it sounds hollow when you give it a tap. n Cool on a rack and enjoy! n

Kids’ Corner

Cracking fun at Easter Camps The Easter Camps in Newmarket Afterschools were a resounding success this year. Children were treated to a wide variety of Art and Crafts, Sports and even some Citizen’s Science outdoors.

Everyone was delighted to have a touch of normality in these Covid restricted times and afterschools Coordinator Brighid Ide Walsh made every effort to ensure the safety of children at all times.

Plans are currently underway for our summer camp programme and please keep an eye on the IRD Duhallow facebook page and website as spaces will fill quickly.
