LEADER boost welcomed IRD Duhallow, a member of the Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) – who represent the 35 Local Development Companies (LDCs) who deliver the LEADER Programme nationally – have welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Rural & Community Development Heather Humphreys TD, and Minister for Agriculture Food & Marine Charlie McConalogue TD, of an increased allocation of €70 million in 2021 & 2022 for the LEADER Programme.

Welcoming the announcement, Maura Walsh, IRD Duhallow CEO said: “IRD Duhallow and ILDN have been calling recently for the Government to utilise funding available from the EU for Rural Development, for the purposes of LEADER. As the deliverers of

LEADER in the Duhallow Area, we are greatly encouraged by the recent announcement of an increased allocation of €70 million to the end of 2022.

The additional funds will more than double the allocations announced before Christmas and will enable many enterprise and Community projects to get off the ground this year bringing jobs into rural areas.

Volunteers make a clean sweep to keep streets tidy The committee of Castlemagner Tidy Towns organised a highly successful Spring Clean of Castlemagner village, Cecilstown Village, and parish on the weekend of 20th March.

An army of volunteers in hi-vis vests took to streets armed with gloves, litter pickers and good humour to clean, tidy and pick up rubbish.

The committee was delighted with the huge numbers of volunteers who worked tirelessly from dawn to dusk over the two days while maintaining Covid safety guidelines. It was an amazing display of community spirit and goodwill. Thank you, and well done to all volunteers for your fantastic work and help.

It was especially wonderful to have so many children and young people assisting. Lots of rubbish was collected and segregated into recyclable and landfill. Thanks also to Cork County Council who kindly agreed to facilitate the removal of the rubbish.

Well done also to our neighbouring parishes of Kanturk, Banteer and Dromahane who were also out and gave positive encouragement.

We again ask people to please be mindful and not litter our beautiful countryside.

Bridging the gap with weekly online games Tureencahill Bridge Club is continuing bridge online each Tuesday night.

This has been a great success throughout the winter months and has been a great initiative by the club with our own dedicated tournament on BBO. It has ensured as many members as possible have kept in touch and continued the club's activity. However it will never be a replacement for our weekly sessions in Tureencahill which we hope can start up again when it is safe to do so.

BANTEER UPDATES

Michael and Ellen O’Reilly at the Monument in Newmarket recently, where a Centenary wreath-laying ceremony was held in memory of their Uncle, Charles (Cha) O’Reilly. Cha died at his homeplace in Church Street, Newmarket on 15th March 1921, two days after being ambushed and shot near Coolagh Bridge, Newmarket.

Banteer Lyre GAA: Tickets available for Cork GAA €500k draw. Club membership for 2021 is €50 for adult members, €30 for social members and €30 for juvenile players; subs can now be paid to any of our club officers.

Millstreet wins Age Friendly status Millstreet has been awarded Age Friendly status. This is the result of a process which began when County Cork committed itself to establishing a county where older people can live full, active and healthy lives by signing up to Ireland’s National Age Friendly Cities and Counties Programme.

Millstreet is now one of eight Age Friendly towns across Cork – the others are – Bandon, Bantry, Charleville, Cobh, Kinsale, Passage West/Monkstown and Mitchelstown.

To celebrate the news, Cork County Council in conjunction with Millstreet County Council and Cork County Older People’s Council (OPC) have given 200 Age Friendly activity packs to be distributed to over 60’s around the Millstreet area.

20th Maurice O’Keeffe Festival The Maurice O’Keeffe festival is one of the musical highlights in the Duhallow calendar. This year the festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary. PRO Sheila O’Shea expressed the committee’s disappointment at not being able to hold the large event they were planning, but no one could have predicted 12 months ago that we would still be living with lockdowns and restrictions. However, as they say ‘the show must go on’ and Eoin O’Sullivan has put together a wonderful online virtual programme to mark the event this Easter weekend.

Cill Mhín Comhaltas Branch are proud hosts of the Maurice O’Keeffe Festival which is hosted in Kiskeam and Ballydesmond. Maurice, until

his sad passing in 2017, was the President of Cill Mhín Comhaltas Branch. With the musical energy of a man a quarter of his age, Maurice received many honours for his unselfish contribution to Irish Traditional Music in general, and Sliabh Luachra in particular.

Local writer scoops film award Writer/director Sean O'Deadaigh (John Deady), formerly of Banteer West, has scooped a major award at the So-Cal Film Awards in Los Angeles.

The short film entitled The Greek Accusative tells the story of an ageing actor who brings his one man show to a small rural theatre.

His shameless self-promotion and arrogance is revealed in his interactions with the local theatre community. When his mask slips he is brought to the realisation that his whole life has been a pretence.

The truth hurts.

This award winning film was shot in Banteer. Various scenes were shot at the local train station and at the foot of Mount Hilary, but the bulk was recorded in The Glen Theatre.

Sean said, “I’m so grateful to the Glen Theatre and especially to the O'Keeffe brothers, truly Banteer’s

“The present day Glen Theatre was once my own NS and both my grandmother and granduncle were teachers there.

“My inspiration for the screenplay was local and I owe a debt of gratitude to the late Mick Cahill, my former teacher in the school, who fired my imagination with those same Greek myths.”

Sean is also thrilled that The Glen Theatre are staging his first stage play, The Cause. This play will open as soon as Covid restrictions are lifted. The play is centred on the days following the Burning of Cork in 1920. This play is an adaptation from Sean's war of independence screenplay, Cause to Kill.

Support Darkness Into Light Darkness Into Light first began in 2009 and since then it has raised a whopping €29 million. This has enabled Pieta House to keep their doors and their 24/7 helpline open for people in crisis, free of charge.

This year, as we cannot gather together at our usual venues, DIL is coming to you, and they are asking all supporters to don their yellow T-shirts and take part in the event at a time and in a location that suits them, although the official date is the morning of the 8th of May. The organising committee of Kanturk DIL hope to see the event supported as always by our community, as we join each other whilst staying apart at sunrise to remember and reflect, to offer hope.

This year you can choose to sign up for a special sunrise event: Walk, swim, bike or simply share your sunrise moment – or you can take

Eileen Murphy, Miriam Angland, Mary Anne Murphy and Ann Fitzgerald at Darkness Into Light in 2019 part in the Darkness Into Light Challenge. Breast cancer run a success The Knocknagree Community Development Group was formed to fight back against the continuing decline of the village and its hinterland. We have lost so many businesses and our population has fallen quite significantly.

One of our committee members, Mairead Cronin, has been battling breast cancer throughout Covid and thankfully she is doing well. We decided to do a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research and also to support the development of a new community digital hub, coffee shop, multipurpose hall and rooms.

Our group has applied for the Rural Regeneration Development Fund grant which if successful will give us 90 percent of the cost of the build, but there is still much money

As part of a fundraising drive, the committee organised a fundraiser where people were asked to either walk, run, cycle or crawl to support both causes and/or donate. It ran from the 12th to the 19th of March which witnessed some very extreme weather but our intrepid walkers,

runners and cyclist were not put off and clicked up great miles during the week.

We used an online donation platfrom – idonate. People not online were able to donate through committee members or walkers.

In total, €4,200 was donated for both causes – a fantastic result!

Environment

WATER BIODIVER IRD Duhallow is looking for people to participate in a Community Water Biodiversity Training course from April through to September 2021.

The key aim of this free training course is the creation of local ‘Water Biodiversity Action Plans’ in catchments in and around Duhallow.

We will do this by equipping individuals and groups with the knowledge and skills so that they can plan for water biodiversity in their work, leisure, communities and clubs.

The course is bottom-up in design and we encourage participants to share their own expertise and knowledge of their local water body.

This course is open to all. Whether you are an angler, a farmer, a tidy town activist, a nature enthusiast, or just someone who wants to get their feet wet and make real, positive change to local biodiversity, this is the course for you!

IRD Duhallow has been working closely with the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) to create eight exciting training modules to enable community groups and individuals to learn more about environmental stewardship and to develop projects relevant to their local waterbodies (e.g. streams, rivers, springs, ponds, lakes).

Modules will include: Understanding Your Local Waterbody (how catchments work, the water cycle, the riparian zone – connecting land and water); n Water Quality & Impacts (sources of freshwater supply); n Citizen Science (public participation in scientific research); n Practical Field Work Skills; n Water Biodiversity Action Plans.

Modules will be delivered online until Covid restrictions allow for classroom delivery and field visits.

Why get involved?

Waterbodies with pristine water quality are designated by the EPA as high-status waterbodies. These support a diverse abundance of wildlife such as fish, birds, otters, insects and plants. Biodiverse rivers are also of huge value to society, providing clean drinking water and recreational activities such as angling, birdwatching, walking and kayaking (which in turn attracts tourism to Duhallow, supporting our communities).

Community engagement is becoming increasingly recognised as a crucial element of conservation efforts. Community biodiversity projects are having a real impact, and scientists are increasingly seeking data collected by citizen scientists to help with their research.

Widescale cooperation will be required to reverse declining water quality trends. Enabling every member of the community to be a biodiversity hero is key!

This project works alongside farmers to protect and improve ecological water quality in the Allow River Catchment.

Paul O’Flynn is a Freelance Graphic Designer & Artist, working from his home at Barley Hill, Newmarket.

Paul was born in London and graduated from Camberwell College of Art & Design with a Degree in Graphic Communication. He moved to Ireland in 1999 wth his wife Maria and son Matthew.

“When not working on Graphic Design projects, I love to direct my creative imagination to painting. I work in various mediums, such as pen & ink, watercolour and acrylics.

My inspirations and themes are quiet diverse, and my creative journey has moved from realism to pointillism and onto abstract”.

He has sold his paintings in Ireland, the United Kingdom and even one to Japan.

Locally, he exhibited his abstract work at the Kanturk Arts Festival back in 2019. The title of this exhibition was Atlantic Rain - Interpretations. This was a series of paintings that creatively interpreted various words, phrases and idioms associated with rain, the rain that has carved the culture and landscape of Ireland. OUR BATTERED MOON

By TREVOR O'DONOGHUE Glance up at the Moon any night and you will see a silver orb that has inspired poets, writers, musicians and philosophers. But if you actually look at the Moon, you will notice some lighter and darker patches. These patches of light and dark make distinct patterns and shapes and so we have the ‘Man in the Moon’ and the ‘Moon Rabbit’.

The interesting thing about the patterns of light and dark is that they are caused by distinct geological processes.

The darker areas are called Mare, which is Latin for seas, because this is what early astronomers thought these areas looked like. These dark areas are old lava plains, most of which formed early on in the history of the Moon. The lighter regions tend to be the lunar highlands, that were pushed up billions of years ago, when the young Moon was bombarded with massive rocks left over from the formation of our Solar System.

Larger impacts created huge craters, surrounded by hills, rocks and debris. The craters flooded with lava and so the lunar seas were formed.

The Moon has no atmosphere, weather, wind, water or erosion and so all the craters left from the impacts are still there today, unless they were obliterated by newer impacts.

All this pockmarked history is sitting there, waiting to be observed. All you have to do is look up. For a real treat, turn a set of binoculars or a telescope

on the Moon. I guarantee you, it is a sight you will never forget.

The Moon doesn't produce any light of its own. It acts like a mirror, shining by reflected light, light from the Sun. We see the phases of the Moon because the fully lit side of the Moon does not always face Earth. When it does, there is a full Moon. When the fully lit side of the Moon is facing away from the Earth, we can't see the Moon and so it is known as a new Moon. For a few days after the new Moon, the Moon is a slim crescent and can be found in the western sky after sunset.

lucky enough to spot that the dark side of the Moon isn't dark at all, that in fact it has a dull glow. What you are seeing is earthshine. This is when the dark side of the moon is gently illuminated by light from Earth.

Second hand light, so to speak.

The light from the Sun bounces off Earth and gets scattered into space. Some of this light hits the dark side of the Moon where it is bounced back to us, the viewer on Earth. Keep an eye out for this phenomenon after sunset for a few evenings from Tuesday the 13th of April.

THE GRAVE OF A LOCAL LEGEND

By TADHG CURTIN People from all over make a special pilgrimage on Easter weekend to Kilcorney’s Old Chapel graveyard. They come to visit the graveyard’s most famous grave, that of Father John O’Mullane.

When trying to look up this man’s life, it becomes oblique.

What we know is that he was a priest. He was an alcoholic. He hailed from Newmarket and he is said to have had healing powers.

There are tales of his gifts. One time, whilst he was drinking in Millstreet, a local girl was dying.

Her father sought the priest out.

He came to the girl’s bedside. He made a sign of the cross and left.

No sooner was he outside but the girl instantly recovered.

The legend of his death is that he fell ill while lodging in a house

lighting all on its own, signalling that his soul had made it to the ultimate destination.

He has been referred to as the people’s priest. They loved him and looked after him. His final journey back to Newmarket was interrupted by very heavy snowfall, hence his final resting place being in Kilcorney.

CLASSIC GANGSTER FILM REVIEW

By TADHG CURTIN That most sacred and holiest of days proves anything but for Bob Hoskins in The Long Good Friday (1980) Yes. I know that I probably should be writing about classic Easter movie fare like Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, The Gospel according to St. Matthew etc. But I couldn’t resist writing about John MacKenzie’s electrifying The Long Good Friday. It is not only one of the greatest British gangster movies but one of the greatest British movies ever made.

Bob Hoskins is superb in his breakthrough performance. He stars as Harold Shand, a gangster aspiring to become more legitimate by setting up a massive property development deal along the London docklands in partnership with members of the American mafia.

Over the course of an Easter

weekend, his plans start being thwarted by a series of bombings and deaths which leads him to investigate who has it out for him.

The film is still as fresh as a pint of tomorrow's milk. Shand’s aspirations of property development and the free market economy would prove prescient. His vision for the London Docklands predicted the creation of the Canary Wharf. Politics aside, the film is massively entertaining. The filmmaking and score bristle with a vibrant energy. Barrie Keeffe's script is razor tight. It’s rough and funny in

equal measure. The last five minutes has a close up for the ages. The supporting cast is fantastic as well; Dame Helen Mirren takes a one note character of the gangster’s moll and transforms her into so much more but also there's a who’s who of British character acting talent as well as a young Pierce Brosnan in his debut appearance. Many films since then have tried tapping into its vibe.

‘Behind Her Eyes’, another Netflix hit, is a masterclass of how to manipulate the audience and have us questioning everything we believe to be true. It is also worth mentioning that all of the hints and clues are there, you just have to find them. I found myself constantly changing my thoughts on what the outcome was going to be, the ‘who done it’ was changing frequently, which is what you want from a series such as this. I was left so mind boggled by the last two episodes I was instantly looking for the release date of the second season (which has not been released or even confirmed), but I eagerly await the announcement because I refuse to believe there won’t be one.

Easter is a time when most of us indulge in a feast of chocolate. Although the chocolatey hit and Easter egg hunt at home may raise our spirits, just bear in mind that chocolate and dogs are not a good mix.

Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is unfortunately poisonous to our four-legged friends. Chocolate can cause symptoms such as excessive thirst, vomiting and diarrhoea, a fast heart rate, and in severe cases can even cause seizures and heart attacks.

pets, however dark chocolate or products containing cocoa powder are the most dangerous. So please don’t be tempted to let your dog or cat join in on the Easter chocolate fun – it could end disastrously!

Another hazard for our pets at Easter time is the small toys contained within some children’s Easter eggs as a surprise. Dogs in particular may be delighted with the arrival of the surprise toy abandoned on the floor by one of the kids in the family and decide it is a snack to be eaten. Sometimes the eaten toy will pass through the dog and the toy car or action man may have an adventure through the dog’s intestines before appearing in a poo at the other end. Some dogs may not be so lucky, and the ingested toy may cause a blockage in the gut with major surgery being required to retrieve the toy and alleviate the blockage. Not such a great surprise after all!

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A ROAD BOWLER WILLIE JOE LEAHY On the recommendation of Con Kelleher who was featured in the last issue of Discover Duhallow, we talked to another Kilcorney road bowler, Willie Joe Leahy of Willie Joe Leahy & Son Engineering, about his involvement and success with the legendary sport.

How did you get involved with road bowling?

We threw in the evenings down at Killeen cross in Kilcorney.

That’s how I got involved. Then road bowling tournaments started and I joined road bowling tournaments locally and won.

(On winning four North Cork Championships): In 1965, I played Jack Dynan from Donoughmore. In 1967, I played Thade Murphy from Donoughmore. 1968, I played Dan Quill from Ballinagree. The 1967 one, I got to the All Ireland Semi Final. 1997, I played Thade Murphy again and that score was played in Kilcorney. I guess they would be my greatest sporting achievements. I played a lot of tournaments. (On Seamus Sexton, fellow road bowler from Nadd, who passed away in 2020): I played with and against Seamus. When we played as a team, we could never be beaten, to the extent that they gave up playing us! (laughs) What has been your greatest personal achievement?

Being on The Late Late Show in the 1990s. I was on it a few times showing new inventions I developed. I was on it as well for

Who would you say has supported you the most?

My wife Marie, and my son Mark.

He and his wife Yvonne have a three-and-a-half year old son, Rory, and a baby girl just a few

weeks old, Grace. We haven’t got to see her yet due to the lockdown but we keep in touch over the phone. The phone has made the world a smaller place.

An old man said to me, “God can see everything that happens all over the world. Now, WE can see everything that happens all over the world”.

What advice would you give to road bowlers starting out?

Participate in the game. It’s a very healthy game, you’re out in the fresh air and it’s brilliant exercise. You exercise a lot of the muscles in your body by throwing out the bowls!

What do you do outside of road bowling?
