€70M RURAL BOOST Duhallow to benefit from huge LEADER funding hike

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, last week announced the allocation of €70 million through the LEADER Programme for the period 20212022. This is fantastic news for the

businesses and communities in the entire Duhallow LEADER region.

The Government has begun the process of submitting an amendment to the European Commission to extend the 2014-2020 Rural Development Programme, under which LEADER is funded, out to the end of 2022.

As part of that process, the LEADER Programme will be allocated €70m for 2021-2022, adding €50m to the initial funding of €20m announced by Minister Humphreys in December 2020.

It will support rural communities and private enterprises in recovery from Covid-19.

Local screenwriter for BAFTAs

By LOUISE BOURKE Castlemagner native and former Scoil Mhuire Kanturk student Will Collins has been nominated for the BAFTAs. Ranked as one of the world’s top screenwriters, Will saw his new film, Wolfwalkers, narrowly miss out at the Golden Globes – but it has now been nominated for Best Animated Film at the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards 2021.

This is not the first such recognition for a movie scripted by Will: His previous

film, Song of the Sea, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2015.

Wolfwalkers is a feature-length animation inspired

by Irish history and is currently available on Apple's new streaming service.

Hailed by critics as the standout animated feature of 2020, Wolfwalkers follows a young wolf hunter who befriends a girl who may be

capable of transforming into one of the animals at night.

Son of Willie and Peggie Collins and brother to John and Pádraig, Will started work on Wolfwalkers in 2013.

Wolfwalkers was produced by renowned Kilkenny-based animation studio Cartoon Salon, which has carved out a special place in the international animation industry and put Ireland firmly on the map as a leading producer of animated films.

Will is now working on the script for a new animated movie, an adaptation of a graphic novel by Ryan Andrews, This Was Our Pact, a film which is to be directed

by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage (in the role of Tyrion in the fantasy series).

Jerusalema challenge accepted Meelin Amateur Dramatics recently brought a smile to everyone’s faces with their Jerusalema Challenge – Meelin Amateur Dramatics Style!

Recorded in the Village, the fun footage was filmed and edited by Diarmuid Lehane.

With thousands of views and scores of shares, it provided some light entertainment to many in the midst of this level five lockdown.

The cast consisted of Bernie Collins, Edel O’Sullivan, Stasia O’Sullivan, Nancy Lehane, Anne Marie Lehane, DJ O’Sullivan, Nora Shine, Catherine McCarthy, Martina Doody, Chris O’Sullivan, Joe Collins and Denis Lehane.

The group also want to thank the backstage team of Laura Doody and Kevin O’Sullivan as well as those who stood out around the village to enjoy the spirited show

MOURNING A MILLSTREET AND CORK COUNTY FOOTBALL ICON It was with great sadness that Millstreet lost one of its famous sons last month, writes Danny O’Neill.

Johnny O'Keeffe, famed footballer and active Tidy Towns Chairman, played a massive part in Millstreet's glory days on the football fields and also captained his County to provincial honours during a glittering career in both the Green and Gold of Millstreet and the Red and White of Cork Millstreet's finest hour came in 1948 when, for the third time of the decade, they contested the 1948 County senior football final against St Vincent's.

Captaining Millstreet on that famous day was Johnny O'Keeffe. It was a goal from Denis ‘Toots’ Kelleher (who later starred with Cork in the 1950s) that proved the decisive score, winning the title for Millstreet 1-2 to 0-3 for the gallant St Vincent's men.

The homecoming in Millstreet town was most memorable for Johnny, as bonfires blazed along the

Macroom road heading into Millstreet town and more than 3,000 people were gathered by the monument at the square in the town, to greet the victorious new champions; the biggest cheer of the night was when Johnny held aloft the famous trophy – green and gold flags and banners were proudly held high.

1949 also proved a very special year, because with Millstreet as senior champions, Johnny was nominated to become Cork football captain, and went on to hold aloft the Munster Championship trophy in July after Cork defeated Clare in the Munster Final.

Cork were defeated by Cavan in the All-Ireland Semi-Final of 1949.

Johnny kept the Munster Final football at his home.

Johnny and his wife Lena could be seen litter picking as he served as Chairman of Millstreet Tidy Towns for many years, winning more National awards for Millstreet.

Vital community support In June 2014, Tureencahill N.S. ceased to exist as a functioning primary school. It was transformed into Tureencahill Community Centre by a local committee and one of its objectives was to retain an educational focus.

That objective has been met in so far as numerous courses and classes have taken place since, such as: Computer classes; active retirement; bridge, keyboard, first aid; horticulture; cookery; yoga; t'ai chi; pilates; kickboxing; baby massage; mother and toddler and other activities.

All of the above courses have been run in conjunction with Kerry ETB, HSE Cork/Kerry division, IRD Duhallow and some local sponsorship. All of these organisations have been strong supporters of every one of the initiatives undertaken.

Unfortunately, as a result of Covid-19, normal life at the Centre came to a halt for a while.

Many improvements have been carried out since 2014, a new heating system, new floors and windows were installed thus creating a place of comfort. In light of all the works completed, it was with regret that the doors were locked temporarily. It was fortunate however that the Centre was designated as a Digital Hub by Kerry County Council and a high speed broadband system was installed providing speed in excess of 150 megabytes.

The timing was important as Covid-19 restrictions meant that many people needed to work or study from home. Because Hub facilities are available, there are currently seven students, between second and third level, studying online there.

It was heartwarming to see some past pupils of the former school return. Among those are two in particular who had begun their

formal education in Tureencahill and will now end their study in the same place. They will sit their final exams in the coming months.

Jerry Cronin is a final year Transport Management student in MTU Cork, and Catherine Daly is studying Intellectual Disability Nursing in Waterford I.T. Both Catherine and Jerry were enrolled in Junior Infants in September 2003.

They were taught by Mrs Eileen Fleming, Mr Pat Brosnan and Mrs Landers. Having completed 6th

class they attended Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra and after Leaving Cert they headed to their respective colleges. We wish them and all who attend the centre the best of luck in their studies and their upcoming examinations.

Tureencahill Community Group continues to thrive and has moved online now providing: Bridge online; singing with Mary Culloty O'Sullivan; art classes with Jessica Barron; gentle exercises with Nora Dunlea; and knitting with Marie Keane.

At the moment we're fortunate to have volunteers to open and close the Centre and ensure hygiene is kept to a high standard.

In the long term, the group would be grateful for any assistance to maintain the level of service which it provides to the community.

While we are pleased to be able to provide online classes, open to all, we are eagerly awaiting the return of face-to-face meetings and of course the usual cupán tae!

Sports and recreational fund Cork Sports Partnership have announced the launch of the 'Sports and Recreational Facilities Resilience Fund' to assist community facilities across Cork to rebuild their capacity and provide opportunities for people to be active within Covid-19 limits. It is aimed at not-for-profit community-based sports, recreational, and leisure facilities. It is also open to amenity sites such as parks and playgrounds currently managed by community and voluntary groups. Community facilities can now apply for up to €1,500 through Cork Sports Partnership.

This fund is for non-club-related activities.

Community facilities can apply for funding support to implement activities from April to November 2021 under the following categories: 1. Training and Education Leadership; 2. Participation Opportunities - online or face to face delivery; 3. Equipment & Resources - sports-related equipment or hygiene supplies; 4. Communication & Marketing.

There, on that fateful morning in 1921, it was said to have been wet and foggy. It was here that Irish Volunteers John ‘Congo’ Maloney, Tim (Michael) Kiely, Joe Morgan, Ned Waters, Jack Cunningham and Jeremiah Daly were holding up in a house known as ‘the Barracks’ belonging to David Herlihy. They were abruptly woken at 7am by banging on the door. It was a team of British military officers. They began interrogating the men about the weapons they had at the house.

Twelve officers surrounded the men and told them they would be shot. The five men were led to the gable end of the house. Apparently Kiely started questioning the officer in charge and while his attention was distracted, Morgan made a dash for it along with Maloney. Both escaped but were injured in the

How the men and their location was discovered by the officers was due to a traitor in the volunteers, a man by the name of Shields. He was a man under suspicion for a while and his disappearance just before these executions seems to confirm his cooperation with the British. Shields was never caught and made to atone for his actions.

It is believed he escaped to England. A member of the brigade was sent to an address in England where he was apparently residing but Shields was gone when they arrived. It is said he went from England to America.

chaos at Herlihy’s House. Edmond Twomey was also a volunteer. He was a supervisor of the Lyre, Banteer Cow Testing Association. He was travelling to complete one such test when he was overtaken

by British officers travelling in lorries. It’s believed he was shot due to miscommunication between the two parties due to poor weather conditions. When the officers searched his belongings, all they pulled was sample bottles indicating that his task at that time was to do with his day to day work.

Due to the restrictions instilled by the worldwide Covid pandemic, the centennial anniversary of these men of courage could not be properly commemorated. You can make the trip for yourself if you’d like (when travel restrictions ease up) and pay respect to men of courage who died with dreams of a free and united Ireland.

Artist in the frame

SAVING TRADITION Folk/trad singer ELLE MARIE O’DWYER is from Freemount Elle Marie O’Dwyer’s unique voice and captivating traditional style have led her to become one of the most recognised traditional singers of her generation.

Following multiple All Ireland successes, Elle Marie recorded her first album in 2012. Since then, she has gone on to record two further albums. She has performed in Áras an Uachtarán, Croke Park and toured internationally with Comhaltas. She has completed a Masters in Irish Traditional Music Performance from the University of Limerick and is a recipient of Gradam Seirbhíse from Comhaltas for her contribution to traditional singing at home and abroad.

Elle Marie O’Dwyer spoke exclusively about her career to Discover Duhallow: Tell us a little bit about yourself Being from Freemount, it was hard to escape the influence of traditional music when I was growing up.

Success in competitions in my early days led to the recording of my first album in 2012 and so began a new journey as a recording and performing artist. Although I work as a primary school teacher in Co. Limerick by day, performance and singing is a huge part of my life.

How did you become interested in music and singing?

I am lucky to have had many influences growing up who set me on my path of music. My grandmother, Eily Lynam from Kanturk, was a beautiful singer and my father Sean also sings.

While in primary school, my principal Con Herbert encouraged me to attend traditional singing

lessons and I haven’t stopped singing since!

What has been the highlight of your music career to date?

Since Covid, I’ve really come to appreciate the many opportunities that have come my way over the years. The desire to get back on the stage is huge at the moment. I miss it greatly. A career highlight was performing with Cherish the Ladies and Maura O’Connell for the closing concert of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2016 in the Dome in Ennis, Co. Clare. The electric atmosphere, the reception from the crowd and the buzz of the whole occasion is something I will never forget. Magic.

Who inspires you most?

Any singer who can stir emotions through their music inspires me.

Given that this week is Seachtaine na Gaeilge, what do you think can be done to inspire more young people to take up traditional singing?

I’m delighted to say that traditional singing has grown in popularity over the last decade amongst young singers. Pre-covid, I taught singing to almost 50 children from the locality and beyond. I feel it’s important to add a fun element to the classes, ensuring the songs being taught are at the level of the children’s abilities and that the songs are relatable for them.

Encouraging the next generation of singers is something close to my heart so that our traditions and our songs are maintained.

Dark chapter illuminated In light of the recent publication of the report investigating mother and baby homes in Ireland, I was inspired to read a book that has been on my wish list for many years entitled ‘Whispering Hope’.

Millstreet native Steven O’Riordan was only 25 years of age when he strongly felt that someone needed to give the survivors of the Magdalene Laundries a voice. He set about making a documentary, ‘The Forgotten Maggies’, and from this established a support group called Magdalene Survivors Together. In May of 2013 the then Taoiseach Enda Kenny issued a State apology to those who had been incarcerated in laundries throughout Ireland.

The last mother and baby home was finally closed in Ireland in 1998.

It is frightening to think that mother and baby homes are not a piece of ancient history. I was horrified to

By LOUISE BOURKE realise that the same year that Bill Clinton was President of the US and the film ‘Titanic’ was a number one blockbuster in the cinema, we in Ireland were still incarcerating women in dreadful circumstances.

The title of the book ‘Whispering Hope’ is inspired by the line of a song that was sung by some of the women at a MST meeting – 'When the dark midnight is over, watch for the breaking of day'.

The story centres on Nancy, Kathleen, Diane, Marie and Marina who recount their harrowing experience

of the physical and psychological abuse in the laundries. I had always believed that those in the Magdalene laundries were what society would have termed ‘fallen women’ and had children outside of marriage. However, all five of the women featured in this book were imprisoned in the Magdalene Laundries long before they ever became pregnant. As one lady articulately describes: “The only time I ever fell was with the hunger.”

Their fight for justice and forged friendships has enabled them to move forward and have their voices heard, their individual accounts weaving together in an immensely powerful narrative that shines a light on a dark chapter in Ireland's history.

DISTILLED REALISM The first feature film spoken in the Irish language focuses on greed and madness surrounding that illusive of Irish beverages, Poitín (1978).

For Seachtain na Gaeilge, I thought I would revisit a seminal Irish film I first saw over a decade ago, Bob Quinn’s Poitín. It follows a distiller of the illegal drink, (Cyril Cusack) who sells his product to two undesirables, (Niall Toibín and Donal McCann) and his ultimate revenge when they betray their deal and attack his daughter.

Quinn talked about wanting it to be a celebration of Gaeilge but it doesn’t paint a pretty picture when it comes to certain aspects of

Unemployment and alcoholism are de rigueur for a lot of the inhabitants who, once the land has been tended to during the day, dull the senses with alcohol at night. It’s a far cry from the twee, fantastical fun of Darby O’Gill and the Little People.

wear makeup. In its first incarnation, Poitín had no real musical score, just the sparse sounds of its locations. The 2007 version saw Riverdance composer Bill Whelan add a very ambient score that really jumped out at me.

It's bleak and brutal in many respects (dog lovers may want to skip this one) but it’s a really underrated and forgotten gem of Irish cinema, showcasing legendary Irish talent in cracking form.

We may be on the verge of descending into madness like the film's characters with our current lockdown situation but turning on and taking our grievances out on each other as a result isn’t the solution. The poor souls of Poitín can attest to that.

A MUSICAL JOU The Duhallow Choral Society was founded 25 years ago on the 6th March 1996. Brigid Daly has been the choir manager since the beginning. At the time Brigid was a director on the board of IRD Duhallow and applied to IRD Duhallow for funding to start the choir. Her aim was to set up a choir for ordinary people around Duhallow.

The choir was established for singers all ages and to be inclusive of anyone who had an interest in choral music. Since then, the choir has grown from strength to strength thanks to its strong management team. Brigid notes that “the key to the success of the choir over the years has been a high level of dedication, training and commitment by each member, thus enabling the choir to achieve a high standard of excellence while maintaining spirit, vision and enjoyment. We especially remember the beautiful people that are now departed and are members of the heavenly chorus of angels”.

The choir has always engaged only the finest musical directors, accompanists and guest professionals. Currently the musical director is Ms Sharon Reidy Tralee,

The choir commenced training at Colaiste Treasa Kanturk in 1996, and later moved to Scoil Mhuire Kanturk.

The first unofficial performance was at Clonmeen House Banteer and the first official concert in full uniform was performed at the Glen Theatre.

The group has been most honoured to have performed at the highest level, for many dignitaries and in a host of distinguished venues both at home and abroad. One most special performance was for President Michael D Higgins at the

Aras organised by the former Senator Bill Cashin. In May 2017 Michael Moynihan TD invited the choir to perform for all houses of the Oireachtas at Leinster House.

The first tour abroad was in 1999 as guests of Pat Cox former President of the European Parliament, performing in the Parliament, Brussels, Leuven and in Flanders fields.

In 2001 the choir launched a CD to an audience of 1,000 at City Hall Cork. This was followed by a small group performance in Dublin to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In November 2002 the choir were invited by a great Irish American, Mr John ‘Chic’ Donoghue, to tour New York. Following on from this, the group paid a visit to Rome and Leuven Belgium. The choir performed at the historic Irish colleges and in the Vatican gardens for Cardinal William Levada Rome.

Autumn 2004 saw their first tour to Germany, Heidelberg Rhine valley, as guests of the family of Dagmar Ott, and in 2019 travelling to Trier as guests of Monica Brewen and her orchestra, who had been hosted in Kanturk to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Duhallow Choral Society. In May 2012 the choir travelled to Krakow in Poland for a choral festival.

A most memorable 25 years for Duhallow Choral Society

DCS is inclusive, with members representing a wide range of ages and from all walks of life Teresa Daly, a former member, and then Chicago Rose of Tralee, invited the group to perform a week of concerts and events for St Patrick’s celebrations in 2018.

As part of Kanturk Arts Festival, the choir performed with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the late Cara O’Sullivan.

In 2016 a special concert was held celebrating the 1916 rising, in collaboration with musicians from Sliabh Luachra Rockchapel, Mallow Toastmasters, and ‘Pards’ military enactors. In August 2018, the choir

were part of the Croke Park stadium choir performing for Pope Francis.

The group has also many prizes and awards under the belt including first place in the large choir category at Kenmare choral festival in 2012 and 2013 and the AIMs Choral Festival in 2015 and 2017.

Although the choir has travelled far and wide, its most precious moments are when it celebrates Holy Mass and performs concerts in the beautiful churches and community halls around Cork and beyond.

Annual Christmas Concert performed in Kanturk Church is an unmissable ritual marking the start of Christmas festivities.

The choir is extremely proud of its many achievements but most of all succeeding in raising in excess of €400,000 for many charities and local projects.

The choir’s success was made possible by grant aid and support from IRD Duhallow CEO Maura Walsh and the Board of IRD Duhallow, Kanturk Credit Union, Cork Co Council, support from businesses and local media.

However, most of all they wish to thank their many loyal and dedicated followers who have supported them down through the years.

The choir has been silent for a full year now because of the pandemic; hopefully, the halls of Duhallow and beyond will light up again to the sound of music and laughter shortly once restrictions are lifted.

With brighter times ahead, the choir will celebrate its Silver Jubilee with a gala concert, hopefully in the not-too-distant future.

Gardening tips by Rachel Budd, Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Community Garden

Branch out and grow trees We’re coming to the end of the dormant season, and the last tree care jobs need to be undertaken before they come back into leaf.

Although March is mainly recognised as the start of Spring, it also signals the end of Winter.

Theoretically at least. We are not out of the woods yet as winter weather can strike without much warning through March and into April and put paid to the efforts of over impatient gardeners with their tender trays of seedlings.

So don’t rush to sow every seed you possess, wait a while and use the time to plant those trees that you always wanted in the garden, start a mini orchard or put in a length of hedgerow to increase the biodiversity in your garden. And do it now. As the old saying goes, the best time to plant a tree is 30 years ago, the second best time is now.

Trees and hedgerows take time to settle in and get growing, so the sooner you plant them, the sooner you will be enjoying the fruits of your labour, often quite literally.

And talking of fruit trees, if you haven’t pruned your apple trees yet, now is a great time to start.

Pruning in March means that there is less time for the tree to be

Leave all stone fruit – plums, cherries, etc – until the summer.

Pruning them now could lead to infection from silver leaf disease.

Grapevines also must not be pruned just now – once the sap starts rising, cutting into the wood can cause the vine to bleed.

You can still carry out summer pruning of the soft green vines to enable maximum ripening of the grapes.

Trees and hedging are still available bareroot for planting until April, but stocks are low and demand is high. Anyone who has been trying to order trees, seeds, seed potatoes etc online will be only too aware that the great gardening revolution of the pandemic shows no sign of abating any time soon. This is really fantastic for our local environment, and one of the most positive things to have come out of the last very difficult year.

WHAT IS ART PSYCHOTHERAPY? CIARA McAULIFFE is an art psychotherapist based in Mallow, Co Cork What is your job description/title?

I am an art psychotherapist running a private practice in Mallow town called True Reflection Creative Therapy and Counselling three evenings a week. I am also a special needs assistant working in St. Joseph’s National School in Fermoy.

What is your job really like?

I work with children, adolescents and adults who are experiencing difficulties in areas such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, self-esteem and isolation. I use a variety of modalities with clients to meet their needs. Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art materials as its primary mode of communication. Art therapy is not about art skills, it is simply about letting go and experimenting free from judgement. The aim of art therapy is to work with clients to increase their self-awareness and help them process and manage difficult feelings or behaviours.

What subjects did you most enjoy in school/college?

In school I really enjoyed Art and English. I had a fantastic art

teacher who really helped me to develop my artistic talents and prepare me for college. In college I participated in a mix of subjects that were all art based. I really loved printmaking, photography and craft.

How did you arrive at your current position?

I completed a Bachelors degree in Printmaking from Limerick School of Art and Design and went on to complete a Masters in Art Therapy in Cork Institute of Technology.

Breaking into the art therapy industry is quite difficult because it is a relatively new form of psychotherapy, which is why I went into private practice. I am lucky to work very closely with another art psychotherapist, Deirdre Nagle, and this is where True Reflection Creative Therapy and Counselling was formed.

Have you any regrets?

No I have no regrets, I love what I do and I am delighted with what I have achieved.

What do you love most about your job?

I love being part of a client’s journey and watching them grow, transform and re-discover themselves free from the original constraints that brought them to therapy. I also love how diverse my job is and I often delve into other creative processes such as play, music, sand trays and mindfulness. Each client that comes to see me is completely different so there is no one intervention that works for everyone which keeps my job fresh and exciting.

What do you least love about your job?

The most difficult part of my job is having to relay back to a parent or a client themselves that I have exhausted all intervention avenues and that this therapy is not the best solution for them.

Any advice for students hoping for a career in your field?

I would advise students to do their research first and ideally try to meet with an art psychotherapist and get a glimpse of their daily workload. It is also important to know you do not need an Art degree before completing an Art Therapy masters.

ADHERE TO BUFFER STRIPS Farmers in Ireland must comply with a variety of regulations known as ‘Cross Compliance’ in order to receive a payment under the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS). As a component of cross compliance, farmers are required to keep their land in Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC) and must adhere to Statutory Management Requirements (SMRs). SMR 1 requires farmers to ensure the ‘protection of water against pollution caused by nitrates’.

When it comes to spreading chemical or organic fertilisers, a number of requirements are in place to protect biodiversity and water quality. Fertilisers should never be spread when land is waterlogged, flooded, frozen or snow covered, or when heavy rain is forecast within 48 hours.

Adherence to buffer strips is a crucially important requirement under cross compliance and makes up the first GAEC. By not spreading fertilisers or soiled water too close to a watercourse, farmers ensure that water quality is not compromised by their spreading activities.

Excess nutrients from slurry, FYM, soiled water and chemical fertilisers pollute watercourses and are detrimental to several key species such as salmon, mayfly and freshwater pearl mussel.

Organic fertilisers or soiled water must not be applied to land within 10 metres of surface waters such as rivers, streams and drains when an incline of over 10% exists towards the water. This is reduced to 5 metres on flatter land although this increases to 10 metres for the two weeks before and after the prohibited spreading period (which is dependent on what zone the farm falls under; see table, right).

Under similar circumstances, chemical fertilisers must not be

applied within 2 metres of a surface water.

Cork falls within Zone A, Kerry within Zone B. A percentage of farms are randomly selected for a full cross compliance inspection annually.

Where a breach is found, this will result in a reduction of up to 5% of the BPS where negligence is the cause. Where the cause is deemed intentional, a reduction of 20% is generally imposed.

However, this can be reduced to 15% or increased to 100% depending on the seriousness of the non-compliance.

When you visit the vets, you are not just visiting the vet himself or herself alone; what we do on a day-to-day basis to take great care of your pets involves many people, with many different skillsets, to keep everything ticking over.

One key person that you might not realise has a huge impact on your pet’s care when you visit the vets, is the veterinary nurse.

Most people might think that a veterinary nurse’s main role is as a professional animal cuddler, and indeed giving each pet care and comfort is a large part of it, but veterinary nurses have a wide range of important knowledge and technical skills that they use to form a key part of the care that your pet receives. Duhallow flock wins top award The Duhallow Charollais flock (C62) has been announced as the overall winner of the highest achieving LambPlus flock, fighting off stiff competition from Tim Keady’s Oltore Belclare flock and David O’Gorman’s Carrowbaun Charollais flock at the recent FBD LambPlus Awards with Sheep Ireland.

This award is special for owners Maria Philpott and John Lawlor as they were nominated for the most improved flock in 2019 so to progress onto winning the highest achieving flock in 2020 is a huge achievement.

The Duhallow flock was established in 2006 near Kanturk, Co. Cork and has been a member of the LambPlus programme since 2009.

John Lawlor and Maria Philpott’s Duhallow Charollais flock was the overall winner at the recent FBD LambPlus Awards with Sheep Ireland closely by €uro-Stars. The focus in this flock is to breed rams that will perform well in a commercial flock so traits such as mothering ability and lamb vigour are carefully recorded with replacements only kept from top performing ewes.

The careful selection of animals with high genetic merit has resulted in the 2020 lambs having

an average €uro-Star value of €2.98 (€2.22 in 2019) on the Replacement index and €2.15 (€1.19 in 2019) on the Terminal index. Data recording has improved over the past few years, special efforts to upload data in a timely fashion resulting in the flock DQI being a very impressive 93%. The improved data collection and inclusion of stock rams in the CPT have both helped to achieve a flock average index accuracy of 48%. The careful selection of breeding females over many years combined with the purchase of top-quality stock rams will both help to ensure the success of the Duhallow flock for many years to come.

The overall winner of the highest achieving flock received an engraved trophy, a framed certificate, and a cheque for €1,000. The two other finalists each received a framed certificate and a cheque for €500.

IGNORE THAT POISONOUS PARROT Imagine for a moment that I gave you a gift. A gift of a parrot.

Probably the most unusual gift you have ever received, a parrot in a cage.

This parrot doesn’t have any wisdom or knowledge, in fact he is bird-brained. He doesn’t understand things and he is not intelligent at all.

This parrot however has a flaw.

He is a poisonous parrot. He can talk and he talks a lot. In fact, all he does all day is comment on you in an unhelpful manner, in a poisonous way, constantly putting you down as you do things.

For example, when you drop something, the parrot says, “there you go now; you’re so clumsy and stupid”. If you are five minutes late for work the parrot says, “God, you’re such a disaster, you can’t even be on time”. If your friend

How long would you listen to the parrot? At what point would you put a towel over his cage so that he stops commenting? You would probably try to shut the parrot up after a very short time.

However, when we have an internal parrot, a mind bully, we put up with it. The parrot is the same as these internal, negative thoughts we have about ourselves,

yet we put up with them, we even believe them sometimes.

You don’t have to listen to your internal, poisonous parrot. Put a towel over him. Tell him to be quiet.

You deserve to think positive and live your life. Remember, just because we think negative things about ourselves does not make these thoughts true.

Identifying dyspraxia in children Paediatric occupational therapists often assess children and teenagers for dyspraxia and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).

Dyspraxia is related to a praxis (motor planning) difficulty whereas DCD is the overall umbrella term.

Dyspraxia/DCD is a coordination difficulty that affects a child’s movement including their fine and gross motor skills.

Children can present with challenges completing daily activities such as self-care tasks with dressing themselves e.g. managing buttons, zips and shoelaces. They can also struggle with independent skills such as organising themselves and their belongings.

Fine motor difficulties can impact on a child’s ability to complete tasks such as writing, managing

cutlery or opening packets. Gross motor difficulties are often noted in PE tasks or ball games such as football as it may take the child longer to acquire the same skills as their peers.

Balance skills can also be delayed and may result in it taking a child longer to learn how to cycle a bike, for example.

Children with dyspraxia/DCD can tire more quickly than their peers as they are using more effort to complete everyday tasks.

Although children who have coordination difficulties can be delayed with achieving some skills, they still have the ability to achieve them with the right

Baby sensory development

By ERIN GERAGHTY Baby Sensory Cork I'm Erin from Baby Sensory Cork, we are an all-round baby development class and are based all over the country.

Although we can't attend classes at the moment there are still lots of play ideas for you and baby to do together at home to keep them stimulated, developing and having fun!

Tummy time and movement is vital to lay foundations for baby to have the strength to be able to reach key developmental milestones. Babies are not too keen on tummy time at first but if

you lie with your baby on their mat, head to head with lots of eye contact it will help to keep their head raised. Guide their head left or right using a toy to keep their attention and practise working on their eye tracking skills. Gradually building up the length of time spent on tummy time each day will help to build baby's strength.

Maracas: Make your own with a small sippy cup or tupperware adding rice

or pasta to make different sounds.

These are great to help babies work on their hand strength and grasp, again this builds up over time as they develop their muscles.

Treasure baskets: Fill a basin full of safe household items (wooden spoon, whisk, sponge, textures etc). Older babies can lead the play while developing hand to eye coordination and manipulative skills. Change up the contents each week or flip the basin over to make a drum.

Nursery rhymes are a fantastic way to work on babies’ speech and language skills! Let babies see your facial expressions as you sing so they can begin to imitate your facial expressions.

Make sure and finish each little activity with an applause for your baby acknowledging their progress and demonstrating the skill.

WHY KEEPING HYDRATED IS KEY We all know we should be drinking water every day but we often don’t know why.

The recommended daily water intake for an average adult is 2 litres per day at a minimum – you’ll need even more if you are regularly exercising.

Water intake can have a huge influence on other functions in our body. When we don’t drink enough water, it can lead to dehydration which can in turn present itself as headaches.

Water is a key factor in helping digestion. Often, when people don’t drink enough water, it can lead to poor bowel health, constipation and bloating.

Here are some tips for drinking more water: n Keep a glass of water by your bed and drink it as soon as you wake up;

Francis Dennehy on life in Vancouver Where do you currently reside?

Right now, I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It’s the most westerly large city on the mainland and is about a one hour drive to the U.S. Border with Washington State.

What made you choose your current location?

Initially, I visited Vancouver on a trip to see a friend in April 2011. I really enjoyed the trip and was so in awe of the place that i decided to apply for a one year work permit when i got home. I am still here nine years later, having become a Canadian citizen in 2018 How does where you live now differ from Duhallow?

Vancouver is an urban area with a population of about 2.5 million. It’s a port city, goods are brought from Central and Western Canada to be shipped abroad; goods arrive and are carried inland from here also.

There is usually a long cruise ship season which brings many tourists every year. To the North of the city are beautiful snow-capped mountains which have three ski hills. In late Spring, it’s possible to ski on the hill and kayak in the ocean on the same day.

The lifestyle and the scenery are what enticed me to live here.

There are lots of activities within close proximity and things to do all year round. I have made many friends during my time here. I owned a sailboat with two friends

for a few years and used to sail in the bay and to local islands. In 2016, I met Jaclyn who was born and raised in Vancouver. We got married in August of 2020.

What is it that you miss most about home?

I miss my family the most – as a result of the pandemic I haven't seen them in nearly two years and they couldn’t be here for my wedding last year. I also miss friends and the strong sense of community that Ireland has. The people are very nice in Canada but it’s hard to beat the strong social connections that Irish people have with one another.

Will you ever return?

It is something I think about a lot.

We are considering moving back for a while to give it a try and to also be closer to family for at least a while.

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A How is road bowling played?

Road bowling is similar to golf and pitch and putt. It is played with a 28oz steel bowl. The player throws it underhand along the road. There are two lines; a starting line and a finishing line. The player that covers the distance between the two lines in the least number of throws is the winner.

How did you get involved with road bowling?

I started when I was going to national school in Rathcoole.

There was little traffic around at that time so we played all roads.

What is Kilcorney’s history with road bowling?

It all started back in the 1930s.

What is your greatest sporting achievement?

It was winning the North Cork Veteran Championship Final.

Also winning a major tournament in Rylane where around 75 players took part.

What is your greatest personal achievement?

That’s an easy one to answer: Getting married.

Who supported you the most?

My wife Mary and family gave me the most support. Also my good neighbours and friends were always there for me.

What advice would you give to young road bowlers just starting out?

Without a doubt, practice every chance you get. And of course be sure to stay safe at all times.

What do you do outside of road bowling?

It would be work, watching matches on TV, playing cards.

What are your goals going forward?

My goal going forward would be to keep drawing the pension!

Irish road bowling is one of Ireland’s oldest sporting traditions, going back as far as the 17th century. It originated in both Cork and Armagh and is still being played in these two counties to this day. Kilcorney man Con Kelleher has been following the sport for decades.

In fact, any bowling scores played locally or in nearby locales, you can be sure to see Con along

CON KELLEHER the road. Road bowling, like everything else, fell victim to the restrictions inflicted by the varying lockdowns but here’s hoping that soon enough, this grand old sport will come alive along the roads once again. Con provided a few words that give us a little insight about him and a sport he loves so much.
