OUR EXPERIENCES Having a wedding in times of Covid How did your story begin?

We got engaged whilst visiting my best friend and her fiancé in Essex on the 9th of October 2019 which was very exciting and special. We both decided that we would like to get married within the year as we were both eager to start a family.

Like every couple, we started our wedding planning journey visiting venues and researching various vendors. Having said all that, from the very start we wanted a low key wedding that we could share with all of our family and friends.

Having a wedding during a global pandemic, what’s the first thing that springs to mind?

Our first reaction in March 2020 was obviously to be frightened of this unknown virus and what it could bring and the thought of our wedding at this stage did not enter our minds. As a couple of months passed we were saying ‘oh, our wedding isn’t until October, we should be fine’. However, no one could have predicted just how long this situation would continue.

What stopped you from postponing your 2020 Wedding?

As I mentioned, from the very start we wanted to get married within the year so there was never a doubt that we would be getting married

What was it like having to exclude important guests from your special day?

It was upsetting not to have everyone we originally wanted at our wedding. Having to cut certain family members, friends and work colleagues out of the equation was a really horrible situation that gave us both sleepless nights. I must say though, most people were so supportive and understanding about the predicament we were in.

How did your reception differ from other weddings that you’ve attended?

With all the upset and uncertainty at every step of planning this wedding, which I am sure a lot of couples who are or have been in this situation could relate to, we had the most amazing day. My faith is very important to me and we had the most beautiful ceremony in St Mary’s Church Castlemagner performed by a family friend,

Fr O’Hara and our parish priest, Fr Toby. We had our wedding reception at the Oriel House in Ballincollig and they were beyond amazing and so helpful to us at a very stressful time. They went out of their way to make sure everyone felt safe to be there while also making sure we all had a fun day and night. I must also mention our photographer, Gedas from White Amber, who took the most beautiful pictures and captured all the special moments of the day. And of course Tadhg Curtin for doing our wedding video, I have no doubt that it will be amazing.

What did you do for your honeymoon?

Oh the honeymoon! That was as unpredictable as the wedding itself hahaha. It went from Mexico to Lanzarote to Kerry but in the end we ended up in good ol’ East Cork.

We had a ball and we were spoilt by every hotel we visited. We were very blessed that we could go anywhere as the following week we went into lockdown again.

If we continue to navigate through the different levels of restrictions is there any advice you could offer to other couples planning their wedding?

Our one bit of advice would be to do what is right for you as a couple. Try not to listen too much to other people’s opinions or advice as it will drive you mad. I know everyone says that it doesn’t matter what you do, the important thing is you are getting married, but it is so true and whatever you plan to do on your big day it will truly be the best day of your life.

A quote from my grandmother: “I was a bit wary at first but when the numbers attending were small, I felt very safe. The whole wedding, from the church to the hotel, was very well conducted.”

OVER LOCKDOWN One family’s pandemic diary the Curtin family went through this year separately but together – they will enter 2021 with hope: “When it rains you get wet but the sun will rise again.” mary – I missed not being able to go to mass and dancing at Laharn cross on the weekends. Also different social outings as well like going to the beach and Listowel Races. We got plenty of fresh air and exercise looking after our livestock. I was lucky to be in lockdown out in the countryside as opposed to the city. My hope for next year is that with a vaccine on the horizon things will improve and we will have more freedom without restrictions, that things would get back to some kind of normality.

seamus – I miss being able to go to the mart with the animals and going into the ring. Going to mass, socialising, having a few drinks, going to matches as well. You feel like a prisoner of war. I visited my son Liam in London at the end of February and then one week later, the lockdown came in. If I had gone one week later, I would have been stuck over so I was lucky.

Even though times were tough during the lockdown, being away from my own surroundings, boyfriend and even bed, I was just grateful to have a job and friends around me. Now, as the months go by, I am happy to be back in my office in Cork City, the company I work for provides a safe working environment which enables me to commute up and down from Kilcorney while also making sure my family is safe.

siobhan – As one of the lucky ones, working in HR for a company that was unaffected by the pandemic, my biggest dilemma was to now figure out how to work from home in a rural area with no WiFi or workstation. In March I was forced with the decision of cocooning at home with my parents in Kilcorney who were in the high risk bracket, or setting up shop at my close friend’s

Of course when the country went into lockdown those weddings were postponed and some left in limbo. I did record one wedding for friends of mine in October, everything seemed to be against them: the guest list had to be cut down, the honeymoon had to be kept local.

But love does conquer all and despite everything they ploughed on. Hopefully the cameras will be rolling once again next year.

Liam – While strolling through central London earlier this summer I was reminded of the opening scene of Danny Boyle’s film 28 Days Later, where Cillian Murphy’s character emerges from a coma to find London completely deserted. Little did I know that 16 years later I would inadvertently end up recreating that very scenario, minus the flesh eating zombies of course. It was tragic to see a once vibrant hub of human activity reduced to a lonely, depressing and mostly abandoned area. The worst part of this whole thing is that this was and still is self-inflicted by incompetent and uninformed politicians that have no business getting involved in the virology business. Worse than any flesh eating zombie by a country mile!

Festive festival is BOOK OF LOCAL TALES all set for the web IS PERFECT GIFT IDEA Despite the disappointment of having to cancel the 2020 Arts Festival due to Covid 19, Kanturk Arts Committee has been hard at work in preparing a night of entertainment for the festive season. We are delighted to be hosting a Christmas Miscellany on Zoom on Sunday 6th December at 8pm.

An evening of songs, music and storytelling, it will feature master storyteller John O’Sullivan, musicians Jayne Harrington, Séan Bowman and Eoin O Sullivan, writers Mike Guerin, Mary Angland, Janet Heeran, Mary Bradford, Joan Murphy and Julia Dennehy. Host is Kanturkbased digital photographer Viv Buckley.

The Castlemagner Community Development Association is proud that their book, When I was About Knee High, is now completed. To pre-order a copy, please contact Mary O’Sullivan on 086 0717761. From the week of 8th December it will be available at Twohig’s Supervalu, Kanturk Bookshop, Scully’s Stationery Shop, Murphy’s Gala Shop and Phillip’s Bookshop, Mallow. The idea for the book was first mooted during the first Covid Lockdown with an idea of recording stories, traditions and memories as told by older members of the community and preserving them in a book format for posterity. Individuals and businesses in the community generously gave sponsorship. A grant was secured through the SICAP programme administered

by IRD Duhallow towards the cost of printing of the book. CCDA is extremely grateful for all the help and support they have received.

The publication is a wonderful record of times past with heart-warming stories, memories, poems, precious old and beautiful scenic photographs.

Castlemagner parish has an incredibly rich history with ancient forts, churches, holy wells, castles, houses, Bronze age and Viking hoards, and artefacts from bloody battles fought on her soil but the everyday life of her people is as important and valuable.

When I was About Knee High will appeal to everyone, not just those with a Castlemagner connection.

It would make an ideal gift. All proceeds go back into the local community and a contribution will be made to the charity ALONE.

Meals on Wheels: The Rathmore Social Action Group will continue to run our Meals on Wheels Service. To avail of this vital service, please call Norah and Marie on 064 77 58588. These meals will be dropped to the door of the person's home.

We will help to deliver this service to as many as we can. The Social Action Group has received CLÁR funding of €5.3517.88 for equipment. This is a new initiative under CLÁR for 2020 in recognition of the critical role played by community groups in responding to Covid-19, with a particular focus on those groups providing Meals on Wheels services.

Christmas lighting: Mr. Liam Flynn from Millstreet outlined a proposal which would very much enhance Rathmore over the Christmas period. Unfortunately it would involve significant expenditure in year one

but not quite as costly in year two and subsequent years. Year one brackets would cost €50, trees are €15 and lights €22, putting up and taking down €40.

Spring planting: During the week, planting of spring bulbs continued around Cecilstown and Castlemagner. Thank you to all our hard-working volunteers, both young and old who planted and weeded following all Covid protocols. It was especially heartening to have so many young people and families to help. We also had Eoghan Cronin assisting as part of his Bronze medal for Gaisce (President’s Award). The extra pair of hands was most welcome.

Christmas trees: On Monday 23rd November, CCDA were delighted to accept on behalf of the community a gift of two beautiful Christmas trees, for Cecilstown and Castlemagner, from Cork County Council. This is part of the Council’s initiative ‘Make it a Real Cork Christmas’. A huge thank you to Liz, Jim and Ollie in the Mallow office for all their help. Also, to Councillor John Paul O’Shea who added support to the initiative. The trees have been placed in central locations in both villages, and lights added. Thanks to the many people who have lent their support to the project in so many ways, finding suitable locations, wiring, offering power source etc. All your help has made this initiative possible and shows wonderful Christmas spirit and generosity. We hope to have a small, low key event to celebrate the official turning on of the lights, a symbol of hope in the darkness that has been 2020.

Festive fair: The Sinsir Club are holding an open air Christmas Fair in Castlemagner Church Car Park on Sunday December 13th fron 1-3pm. Your support would be greatly appreciated on the day. It would also be very much appreciated if you could see your way to contributing to the event maybe some Christmas baking of any kind, eg. chutneys, mince pies, brown bread, cookies, jams, anything homemade would be hugely appreciated. Arts, crafts and Christmas wreaths very welcome.

Budget 2021: Highlights for employers and employees

By JACKIE KELLY Here are some key takeaways from the next year’s National Budget for employers and employees: employers n Under the Covid Restrictions Support Scheme(CRSS), businesses that are closed as a result of level 3-5 can apply for a cash payment based on their 2019 average weekly turnover, to a maximum weekly payment of €5,000. To qualify, turnover must be down by at least 80% compared to the corresponding 2019 period; n VAT rate reduction from 13.5% to 9% for the Hospitality and Tourism sector; n €15m to support businesses to respond to changes to customs and tariffs; n €7m to help the food processing industry adapt; n €11m for Local Enterprise Offices working with local businesses across the country; n €675,000 for Inter Trade Ireland to provide practical help to businesses trading cross-border; n €39m in continued access to low cost loans for business; n €30m for applied research in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry; n €10m to help businesses move online with the Online Retail Scheme; n €10m for the IDA to develop advanced factories and industrial estates for companies seeking to invest in Ireland; n €30m for a call to regional enterprise centers for initiatives to create jobs in every region; n €6.6m for an Advanced Manufacturing Centre in Limerick

to provide a state-of-the-art facility for companies across the country to develop new technologies; n €3m for network of Digital Hubs to help SMEs modernise and stay connected; n €100m to help businesses adapt to Brexit. employees n €3.4 billion Recovery Fund to protect jobs; n €10.1 billion infrastructure spending for the construction sector to continue delivering homes, schools & public transport; n For the self-employed, increased Earned Income Credit up to €1,650; n Remote working from home expenses of €3.20 per day may be paid to employees without a benefit-in-kind arising. Workers may also claim a tax deduction for utility expenses like light, heat and broadband; n Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) will remain in place until January 2021. PUP recipients will receive a 100% Christmas bonus this year, if they are in receipt of the payment for

four months. Self-employed workers will be able to earn up to €480 a month (gross) and maintain their PUP; n A commitment has been made to sustain the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS) until at least April 2021; n Parent's Benefit increasing from 2 weeks to 5 weeks for parents of children born or adopted after November 2019, €245 per week for those who take parent's leave from work within their child's first year; n From the end of February 2021, illness benefit will be available on Day 3 of illness, previously Day 6; n From January 2021, the weekly threshold for the higher rate of employer's PRSI will increase from €394 to €398. USC band ceiling increasing from €20,484 to €20,687; n Eligibility for the State pension is to remain at 66 years; n €10m funding has been dedicated to focus on youth unemployment.

If you have a greater sense of self-awareness, then you will have a better chance of making more enlightened choices. n self-awareness: From a career development point of view, is about identifying your interests, your strengths, your natural skills, your personality and your weaknesses. n goals & dreams: Ask yourself what are your aspirations, what are your goals? Are these goals realistic and attainable? What career area or job opportunities will best fulfil you? n Career area research: When choosing a career area, start with the general area, e.g. Business, IT, Agriculture, Fashion, Health Science & Medicine, Childcare, Digital Media, Law, Aviation, Sport, Engineering, Art & Design, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Education, Theatre and Film, Hospitality etc. Having identified your general career area, what aspects in particular best appeal to you? Research the different aspects and careers, listen to podcasts, and speak to people in this chosen field. n Possible Pathways: Having identified your career destination, now, how will you get there? What options are available to you? What path, or combination of paths, will you choose that will best suit your ability and your aspirations in order to achieve your overall goal?

FAR AWAY How Christmas is celebrated in other cultures – courtesy of Duhallow’s diverse community

Christmas is the most celebrated holiday in my country, writes aBIgaIL NdLOVU, as it brings the family together.

For me, I can say it was much the same as it is in Ireland – that special day when you get new clothes and presents. the family will normally gather together, dance, play music, eat special food such as rice, salads, and all kinds of meat; it is indeed that time of the year that we all take a break from ‘Isitshwala lo mfushwa’ (traditional food). my family photo was taken in 1995 on Christmas day, where we have all gathered in my grandfather’s home. In short, I can say that Christmas in Zimbabwe, just like in Ireland, brings the family together and it is that time when you can easily forget about your troubles and focus on enjoyment.

RUSSIA The most favourite time in the year for the Russian people is the winter holidays, writes ALYONA MILOSHEVICH-BROWNE. You can already start to feel an amazing Christmas spirit after 1st December.

All over the country buildings are decorated with lights, Christmas trees are erected, toys and fun for kids are deployed. Streets are full of Christmas markets with lots of craft designed gifts, music, delicious food and shows. Also you can go ice skating in magical surroundings or visit ice sculpture exhibitions and enjoy the arts or just do your shopping in huge malls. Kids love to watch Christmas shows with our own Russian Santa in the theatres.

Winter in Moscow is like a fairytale: it’s still warm – even though it’s minus 3 or 5 degrees, it doesn't feel like it would in Ireland. Snow is falling every day, big fluffy beautiful flakes don't melt immediately.

The main religion is Orthodox but Russian people celebrate Catholic Christmas on December 25 as well because of feelings of solidarity. Our main and favorite part of Christmas holidays is the 31st of December, New Year. We prefer this celebration over Christmas. It’s a historical fact that Christmas was not legal in communist USSR. But after 1992 religion came back into our lives.

A very special celebration which we call ‘Old New Year’ on the 13th of January signals it's time to thank and bid farewell to the old year.

From January 6th-13th we call “holly days”. We visit family and friends. Neighbours can come to your house with Christmas songs or poems. According to tradition you should treat them back with sweets or a poem.

We celebrate winter holidays with family beside a Christmas tree with an amazing dinner, funny quizzes, music and laughter all night long.

Oh, and waiting for Russian Santa to put our presents under the tree.

Y FESTIVITIES KERALA, SOUTH INDIA Before we see how Christmas is celebrated in Kerala (our state) in South India, lets take a look at the history of Christianity in India, writes SIMON S PACHIKARA. St. Thomas was one of the 12 apostles who followed Jesus, travelled far and wide and he came to Kerala in AD 52. He converted locals to Christians, slowly spreading Christianity in Kerala. In the 4th century, Thomas of Cana came to Kerala, from then onwards Christianity rapidly flourished in Kerala.

In Kerala, also known as ‘God's own country’, Christmas celebrations are a delightful mix of Syrian Christian, Western Christian and local tradition.

Here are some of the simple joys in the way Keralites celebrate Christmas. Mainly children make hand made cards which are then given to family, friends and neighbours. Families start decorating their houses from the first week of December. We light up our houses and hang up the traditional Christmas star.

Families make their own crib. Almost every church holds a competition for the best crib – when the carol group visits each house they evaluate the crib and the winner is announced at the midnight Mass.

Through its SICAP programme, IRD Duhallow strives to create socially inclusive interventions and initiatives which aim to underscore positive interactions between migrants, their families and the local community. The purpose of this will be to ensure better community cohesion over the long term, therefore supporting integration.

In recent times through SICAP a number of supportive actions and events were undertaken, which were all underscored with the theme of valuing

the diversity of Duhallow. These actions included multi-cultural events, opportunities for lifelong learning and the support of specific projects which had the integration of new communities at their core. Furthermore IRD Duhallow has successfully applied for funding under the community integration fund 2020 to run a number of workshops concerning integration awareness for secondary school students. These workshops are currently in the planning stage.

Simon Pakichara, originally from Kerala, celebrating Christmas with his family evenings, singing traditional Christmas songs accompanied by Santa; where Santa and Carol groups sing and dance, they distribute the sweets to the families. Everyone tries their level best to attend the midnight mass.

After the midnight mass, Santa will be in the church yard to greet everyone and he gives a piece of Christmas cake and some wine to one and all – there are smiles all around. Another good reason to attend midnight mass!

Keralites from all over the world make the effort to come down to spend time with their families relatives and friends. For adding more excitement to the Christmas celebration we do fireworks on Christmas eve.

To embrace the spirit of giving, people donate to charity, visit orphanages and old age homes to spend quality time with them.

Keralite Christians undertake 24 days of Lent for Advent prior to Christmas with restrictions of eating non vegetarian foods, and try their level best to attend the daily mass to prepare themselves to receive the infant Jesus.

Glimpse at the life of an Occupational Therapist KATE MURPHY is a Senior Paediatric Occupational Therapist

Considering what career path to take? This series of Q&A interviews with Duhallow professionals offers candid insights into what the job really entails...

1. What is your job like?

Paediatric Occupational Therapists work with children up to 18 years old on a variety of activities of daily living that they may be experiencing difficulty with. I try and work on goals with the young person to help them to become more independent with their daily occupations such as self-care, feeding, eating, sleeping, and learning by addressing underlying issues or difficulties such as fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory processing and attention to a name a few. I also look at how the child can function in different environments including their home, preschool or school to determine how their skills are developmentally appropriate for their age.

2. What subjects did you most enjoy in school/college?

In school I mostly enjoyed English and Home Economics. I always enjoyed reading as a young child and therefore I found English interesting. I also loved baking and really enjoyed the practical aspect that Home Economics had to offer.

3. How did you arrive at your current position?

I completed my Bachelor of Honours Degree in Occupational Therapy in Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK. I then moved home and was successful in getting a position in a private Paediatric Clinic in Cork. I worked there for a number of years while also completing a part time Masters in Evidence Based Therapy Practice in UCC. I later moved positions to the HSE and

I recently moved to a more senior position with the HSE in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Kerry. I also run a small private practice from my home in Rathcoole which I really enjoy.

4. Have you any regrets?

In the past I have probably struggled with achieving a good work life balance. I have served on a number of professional committees in the past including being chairperson for the Paediatric Advisory Group, a national special interest group of Paediatric Occupational Therapists in Ireland. Although I really enjoyed all of the work, it took up a huge amount of my personal time. I now value my

downtime more and I think this makes me a better therapist.

5. What do you love most?

Thankfully I am one of those people who genuinely loves their job. I really enjoy how diverse my career is and as a result I can never see myself getting bored of working as an Occupational Therapist. I particularly enjoy how I work with children and teenagers on a variety of skills such as handwriting, balance, fine motor, attention and many more. I also feel very lucky that sometimes by providing a small piece of advice to parents or teachers it can result in making things a lot easier for the child. I genuinely find the work of being an Occupational Therapist very rewarding.

6. What do you love least?

It’s always challenging when you have to tell parents that their child has a difficulty or a developmental delay. I feel for families who are sometimes struggling with their child’s additional needs but are unsure of where and how to access the appropriate supports.

7. advice for students hoping for a career in your field?

I would encourage any students considering studying Occupational Therapy to do some research about the different career opportunities from it. I think it would also be very beneficial to speak with an Occupational Therapist if possible to get a greater understanding of what the day-to-day job entails. It is also important that students look into the many different paths that allow you to obtain a degree in Occupational Therapy.

A LIFELONG LOVE JESSICA BARON shares her journey to becoming an artist I was 14 years old when I started learning oil painting. I remember walking into a small classroom, a shy teenager, and there were only adults there. I fell in love with oil painting and held it as a favoured hobby for years. Wherever I moved to, from Canada to New Zealand and Ireland, the one constant in my case was the small pack of paint, brushes and palette knives.

All that time though, it never even crossed my mind that painting could become a career. I exhibited work sporadically, but never called myself an artist. I held other “proper" jobs and kept on painting. Then came 2010, the recession and redundancy when the company I worked for closed their operations in Ireland. I suddenly found myself without a job and expecting our first child. Those strange times were to become the best years of my life!

I would be lying if I said that I focused solely on becoming an artist. I was all over the place! I took courses in upholstery, training delivery, started offering French lessons... It took me five years to take the plunge and it is still today a tricky road to navigate.

Every step I took contributed to where I'm at today. I took the time to learn my craft (even after 20 years of painting, I had much to learn), found a style I was happy to put out there, discovered that I loved teaching art and a lot more too.

I have doubts over what I do and how I do it practically every week, most artists have I think. We put so much of ourselves in what we create, and then we put it out there for everyone to criticise, it's a tough business! But the satisfaction I get when someone falls in love with one of my paintings is second to none.

mainly of landscapes. I say at the moment because at any time, a different inspiration might hit me and then I might be painting cityscapes, or pets, or some pretty flowers. That is why I don’t like calling myself a landscape artist, because the landscape artist in me is only a part of where my creativity took me. The way daylight affects shapes and colours in nature always fascinates me and that’s what can be seen in my current paintings.

Painting my original paintings or someone's commission are two very different things. The freedom of creation for originals is something I

will always crave, but because I like working with people, painting commissions also brings me something I wouldn't get otherwise: teamwork. And that is exactly what it is; I keep my clients involved every step of the way. Sometimes challenging, always so rewarding!

SOCIAL FARMING On-farm diversification offers traditional Irish farm households an opportunity to increase or supplement their income despite the hostile markets that exists for farmers today. As well as additional income, there are many other reasons why a farmer may choose to diversify their farming operation such as a desire for greater independence and control, entrepreneurial drive or the inability to compete with large-scale intensive agriculture.

Socially, economically and environmentally sustainable agriculture is about so much more than just food production.

Social farming is a shining example of how agriculture can provide a vast array of social benefits to our society. This initiative provides people who are socially, physically, mentally, or intellectually disadvantaged with an opportunity to experience farming life on an ordinary working farm. It is an interesting way to diversify your farm as, although there are opportunities to augment your income, it is probably fair to say that most participating farmers prioritise the social benefits of social farming as opposed to the financial.

Many farms in rural Ireland are located on beautiful countryside and there is a growing body of evidence pointing towards the role of nature and ‘green care’ (e.g. nature therapy, animal-assisted therapy) in delivering psychological benefits for individuals with a range of needs. Social farming is a great opportunity to facilitate the delivery of these benefits. Participants have reported various positive outcomes following a placement on a social farm including improved social connections and confidence being around people, development of new skills and interests, improved physical fitness, and increased

Social Farming benefits farmers and scheme participants in many ways sense of motivation and purpose.

Participating farmers no doubt benefit from the sense of community and wellbeing they bring into people’s lives with many reporting a strong sense of fulfillment and satisfaction from hosting a placement.

Despite these advantages, a recent report by FARCURA highlighted the small amount of social farms operating in Ireland as a limiting factor towards the success of the movement.

Social farming is managed by Social Farming Ireland who are based in Leitrim, with regional offices in Waterford, West Limerick and South West Mayo. Those interested in hosting placements must attend Social Farming Ireland’s induction and training process, be Garda vetted and

must regularly engage with regional development officers. It should be noted that participating farms are not expected to change their operations, the idea of the placement is for the participant to experience life on an ordinary, working farm. Farms vary from a one hectare horticultural holding to a 700 acre dairy farm and placements are usually one day per week for a period of 8 to 42 weeks. Farmers are paid for the supports they provide.

Decorations pose a risk to pets

So December is here at last after a very strange year. I’ve noticed that everybody seems to be embracing the Christmas spirit a little earlier than usual – an idea I can very much get on board with. The Christmas carols have been playing softly in the background of our practice office for more than the last few days if I’m honest!

With this early arrival of Christmas cheer, I think it’s safe to expect that the usual Christmas treats may be entering the household a little earlier this year too; Christmas trees and decorations, steaming mince pies and cream, Christmas cake, and a

lot of chocolate I expect. Whist I’m sure that our pets also enjoy the festivities, and many may even partake in wearing the occasional Christmas jumper, just bear in mind that a few potential hazards lurk like the grinch at this time of year, ready to cause trouble. We’ll discuss these hazards over the next couple of issues.

First off, the Christmas tree – make sure it is well secured and stable – cats and dogs seem to derive great joy from attempting to knock them down. Keep any glass, metal or wire decorations higher up the tree well out of reach of inquisitive mouths. The classic bauble made of foam is a safer bet to place near the bottom of the tree, as although they still pose a risk if swallowed, they are not quite as dangerous as those formerly mentioned. That said, never leave pets unsupervised with a decorated Christmas tree. Nobody needs the stress of their pet requiring surgery to hunt down a jolly Santa decoration lodged in their pet’s stomach on Christmas eve. Trust me, I speak from experience on this one!

You should exercise to improve your mood, get some fresh air and release feel good endorphins from getting a sweat on.

Aim to get out in fresh air for a walk every day. It rains A LOT in Ireland so I suggest investing in some good shoes and a rain coat

By RAYMOND O’SULLIVAN The ingredients for the Christmas Pudding were all prepared and left on the kitchen table the night before – it’s easier to mix them when they are at room temperature. The morning was fine though and I took a walk back to the bridge before beginning the task. Elbows on the parapet I got a mad notion that I’d love to walk down the river between Coolagh bridge and Clonfert bridge like we used to long ago. Bóithrín Na Smaointe! God only knows when I last did it. Rivers, to be correct, because the Glenlara river joins the Dalua along the way – the girls used to swim in the confluence at one time, before the shameless hussies stormed the boys’ pool a half-mile further upriver.

I wonder if the stepping stones are still there? That once well-worn path is seldom or never travelled nowadays, the obstacles probably far greater than remembered, and the stroller not as nimble of foot as he used to be, but I’d love to do it once more before I go to Clonfert.

back to a kind of porridge called ‘frumenty’ that was popular in medieval England. It gradually evolved into the present day product and it was only in Victorian times that it was first called Christmas Pudding.

In years gone by preparation of the pudding was surrounded by much superstition and religious symbolism. The pudding should be made on the Sunday before the beginning of Advent, the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Each member of the household would take turns at mixing it with a wooden spoon – from East to West in honour of the Three Wise Men. The wooden spoon represented the manger. It should contain thirteen ingredients, representing Christ and the twelve apostles. The whole family took part and everyone was allowed to make a wish while mixing. Putting a silver coin in the pudding, usually a six penny bit, was another custom long since gone. It was said to bring good luck to the person that found it.

The decorative sprig of holly on the top of the pudding is a reminder of Jesus' Crown of Thorns.

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A 1. What/who inspired you to become a sportsperson in your field?

I guess I starting playing at home when I was very young with my Dad, so it would have to be him..

2. What was the moment that you knew you were on the right track?

I guess playing underage with Ballydesmond and being able to match all of the other good players from the opposing teams.

3. What is your greatest strength?

Being able to kick the ball off both feet... I think!

4. What are your greatest sporting achievements?

Winning a Junior Championship with Ballydesmond and an All Ireland with Cork.

5. What is your greatest personal achievement?

It's a sporting one, successfully playing at the top level and being competitive while doing so.

6. What was the greatest challenge you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

I didn't have confidence in myself when I was younger so that probably held me back a little. I didn't do a lot other than I kept working on the game, and I eventually realised that I could match most guys playing football.

7. Who supported you the most in your career?

Ballydesmond Club were a huge part, and my family of course.

8. What advice would you give to young players just starting out?

Work hard on your weaknesses away from training and games, the benefits will be huge.

9. What do you do outside of sports?

Work for Healthcare 21 in Ballincollig, I like to play some golf of late, but I'm not great! I
