All action for Enterprise Town Awards Newmarket is proud to be a Finalist in the Bank of Ireland Enterprise Awards 2019. A comprehensive three hour judging event took place on Monday, September 9th.

Councillor Bernard Moynihan gave a warm welcome to the Judging Panel in the James O’ Keeffe Institute. The Judges were given a series of short presentations, showcasing the enterprising spirit of Newmarket as a hub for rural development, healthcare and commerce. They were then given a guided tour of the town which was looking great despite the celebrations the night before on winning the Junior A Duhallow Hurling Final!

The conclusion of the visit saw the judges meet local businesses exhibiting their wares in a specially erected marquee, Newmarket natives Donal O'Sullivan. MC on the day, left, and Liam O'Connor who helped showwith native Newmarket man Liam O’Connor closing the event.

Gardening tips by Rachel Budd, Horticulturist at IRD Duhallow Community Garden

Spring into action right now Now is the perfect time to think about planting spring flowering bulbs.

We have had a welcome break from the rain and grey conditions over the last week, and that extra bit of summer is a real encouragement to get out into the garden and start thinking about next season.

The first flowers of spring, snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils all can be planted now, with tulips to follow in a few weeks.

The shops are full of special offers on bulbs at the moment, but do please take the time to think about what you want for your garden in the future.

Industrially produced bulbs come mainly from the Netherlands, where great swathes of the country are under bulb production. The majority of these are grown with pesticides and fungicides, particularly neonicotinoids. This is a pesticide that has been linked with the devastating decline in bee and insect populations, and as a systemic chemical is absorbed by the growing plant and can be found in the flowers, nectar, and pollen.

The organic bulb market has been growing steadily for the last few years, and although the range

Snowdrops are among the first flowers of spring that you can plant now of flowers is more limited, every year more varieties are produced organically.

Organically produced flower bulbs are good for the environment in general and bees in particular.

They are good for gardeners and flower lovers too: they last longer, produce stronger flowers and healthier bulbs that will last for several seasons.

The main supplier of organic flower bulbs in Ireland is Co Cork based Fruit Hill Farms (www. fruithillfarm.com). This mail order company from Bantry offers a wide range of organic bulbs including crocus, daffodil, hyacinth, tulips, iris and fritillaries. It would also be worth asking at your local garden centre for organic bulbs or checking out online retailers.

Remember when planting your bulbs to put them in deep enough.

Daffodils and tulips want a depth of about 6 inches, whilst crocuses and other smaller bulbs need about 3 to 4 inches. This is to encourage them to flower more

reliably for many years, without going ‘blind’, i.e. producing only leaves, but no flowers. Bulbs will rot in very wet soil, although they will grow well in a heavy soil with a bit of added grit for drainage.

Whilst planting bulbs, don’t forget the vegetable garden. Organic over wintering onion sets and garlic are available now and are really worth planting in raised beds, or ground which won’t become waterlogged over winter.

Onions and garlic can take cold conditions in winter, but can be susceptible to extreme wet, however it is definitely worth taking the chance.

Over wintering onions will be ready to harvest a good month before spring planted ones, and although they won’t store, will give you a lovely fresh crop over the summer months. Garlic planted in October to December will give you much larger bulbs to harvest in July, once the foliage starts to yellow.

Gneeveguilla Community Council is holding its annual Éamonn Kelly weekend over the first weekend of October 5th and 6th. The week running into the festival, Ray O’Sullivan will visit the national schools of the parish to work with the children on storytelling; Saturday 5th at 11am there will be a storytelling workshop for the kids in Teach Failte; Saturday evening there will be a night of storytelling, song, dance and whatever you’re having yourself in Teach Failte at 8.15pm; Sunday at 11am there will be a tour of historical sites in Sliabh Luachra, bus leaving the Eamonn Kelly monument at 11am. Admission to all the above is free.

Down Memory Lane

My first school: 1937-1945 Our school in Derrygallon, was one of love and friendships. It was mixed with multiple classes, there were eight pupils in mine including five girls. I had two sisters and had a fair understanding of that species.

On the teaching staff there were four females and a male principal.

The teachers were a friendly, chatty group. My enduring memory of my first school is that of lasting friendships, when we meet we smile broadly and hug each other.

I remember my first day at school.

I still cherish my mother rolling my golden curls round her finger, she smiled at her handy-work. I was five, my other brother Willie was six.

He proudly took me by the hand and led me down the long boreen past Harmon’s gate on to the cross and into the school.

Nothing could have prepared me for what I was to witness. At that time, all the boys – nine classes of them from junior infants to seventh class – were in the one room. The masters section was near the fire, he had from fourth class to seventh.

Miss C. had all the juniors in the lower part of the room. There was no electric light or heating, dry toilets were at the back of the school and were cleaned every summer holidays.

Into that classroom I went and was put sitting in the junior infants’ long desk. I was gobsmacked at the sight of so many boys, I gazed at all the strange pictures on the walls, they were maps.

Something very interesting was happening in the master’s class. He was doing a funny Irish book called ‘Jimín Mháire Thadhg’, and was translating it into English. It is the most vivid memory I have of a story that I hoped

would never end.

Both teachers were loud and seemed to be shouting each other down. Both were good at using the cane a lot, I was shocked to tears when I saw the teacher beating my brother Mikie. I got used to that, soon enough it was my turn.

The greatest thing ever happened when I was in second class. The schools were amalgamated. It was now like the Garden of Eden. Our teacher was easy and gentle. I still remember some poems she taught us... ‘On the silver strand in Wicklow’ and ‘Johnny head-in-the air’. She was a lovely singer, she had a strange way of introducing a song: “Lah, te, doh, soh, me, doh...

A Mháire ciúin tá an nollag ar tús.” I still sing her songs at parties where old boys gather.

When I was in sixth class the principal got cancer. I know it was October because I was minding the beet at the side of the road. At that time the farmers had to draw the beet to the roads because the lorries could not travel the boreen.

All cottiers at that time had one or two cows which grazed along the side of the road, that was called the long acre. My father gave me the job of minding the beet for the day until the lorry would arrive.

On that day the master and his wife, the junior teacher, arrived in a car at the school. He came to say goodbye to the pupils.

Sad, they then drove off to the hospital. He died the following Easter.

We did not have a regular teacher in sixth class. An untrained assistant came occasionally but at the end of the year we had nobody. The teacher of the junior class did her best to keep us occupied. Well, no supervision, no work, all play, she pleaded with us for God’s sake, even for the departed master’s sake, to keep quiet. The craic was too good for silence.

In the beginning of June my father made a solemn promise to us on a Monday morning: “If there is no teacher for ye today I’m taking ye out of school. There is plenty of work up there in the bog for ye.”

On our way to school that morning we saw a man’s bicycle parked in the cloakroom, that was strange.

When we went inside we saw a dapper young man talking to the lady teachers. Dead on time he came over to us fifth and sixth classes. We did not know what hit us, we were out of control but not for long. “Take out your Irish books.”

This was it, real school! We did not like it in the beginning but it was good for us. At the end of that day he told us that only sixth class would be coming to school the next day. He told us to bring our pens, pencils, blotting paper, rubber and ruler. “Tomorrow,” he said, “you will be writing your primary cert examination.”

Hands shot up: “What is a primary cert examination?” There was no preparation, I had never written an exam, of course I failed.

That new teacher was Mr Timmy Moynihan. He taught us for the last month of the school year. It required adjusting but we got used to studying and doing homework.

I qualified as a teacher and modelled myself a lot on him. I have met out-of-control classes in my 40 years of teaching, when I did I reflected on that cool, calm new teacher.

Bweeng, Kilshannig, Laharn & Lombardstown Bweeng Trail Blazers will host a number of fun runs for kids on September 21st at 12 noon with the focus on participation, inclusion, fitness and fun. This is a non competitive event. There are no prizes for finishing first. Every child is equal on the day. This event is being run in aid of Barnardos and a donation can be made of your choice to the cause. This is mainly aimed at primary school kids and is open to all kids both local and further afield.

Childcare

National Childcare Scheme is set to benefit thousands The National Childcare Scheme is being launched in October and is the first ever statutory entitlement to financial support for childcare. This scheme sets out to enhance the delivery of accessible, affordable and good quality childcare. It aims to improve children's outcomes, support lifelong learning, make work pay, reduce child poverty and tangibly reduce the cost of quality childcare for thousands of families across Ireland.

Mary Murphy, Manager of Banteer Childcare and Chairperson of the North Cork Community Childcare Managers Network, urges all parents to take time now to familiarise themselves with the eligibility criteria and what will be required of parents.

Childcare facilities and registered childminders are there to help parents transition to this new programme.

“We anticipate that families who previously weren’t eligible for subsidies will now receive support but parents need to be ready to register

when the programme opens.

“Now is the time to start this process as the onus is on the parent initially to register for the scheme, unlike previous programmes where childcare facilities undertook this work for the parents.

“Childcare is a significant cost on families and as professionals in this sector we want to support parents who are working or in education by providing affordable and good quality childcare.

Schemes like this are a start in helping us to achieving this.”

Subsidies will be available for families with children aged between 24 weeks and 15 years who are attending any participating Tusla registered childcare service, including any Tusla registered childminder There are two types of subsidies: Universal Subsidies are available to all families with children under three years old; as well as to families with children over three years who have not yet qualified for the free preschool programme (ECCE). This subsidy is not means tested and provides 50c per hour towards the cost of a registered childcare place for up to a maximum of 40 hours per week.

Income Assessed Subsidies are available to families with children who are aged between 24 weeks old and 15 years old. This subsidy is means tested and will be calculated based on your individual circumstances.

Your rate will vary depending on your level of family income, your child’s age and educational stage, and the number of children that you have in your family.

Which Subsidy am I eligible for? The type of subsidy you are eligible for depends on your individual family circumstances, such as your family income and your child’s age. Useful resources to guide you will be available on the website www.ncs.gov.ie in the coming months.

Donaghmore Macra tops for bowling, quiz and leaders of the future

Donoughmore Macra kicked off the new Macra year by winning the regional round of bowling and are in action in the national finals on 6th October.

The success continued and the club’s quiz team proved their mettle when they qualified for the national final of Club Question Time.

Meanwhile, three young members did the club proud in the recent Leadership Awards.

A spokesperson for Donaghmore Macra said: “We would like to extend our congratulations to members

Alan Twomey, William Buckley and Marie Wallace on their recent leadership awards and a special mention to Alan Twomey on winning a Presidential Medal.

“This is a fantastic achievement and recognises all the hard work they do for Macra.”

Kanturk Duhallow Choral Society has been training and performing for 22 years. With over a 70-strong membership, they have travelled regionally, nationally, and internationally. The group will be travelling to Trier in Germany on the 29th November 2019 for a concert. Over the years the group have contributed to raising over €400,000 for charities and local amenities and causes, Duhallow Choral Society are most grateful for all the grant aid and sponsorship received from Cork County Council, IRD Duhallow and local business over the years. IRD Duhallow hosts judges for Enterprise Town Awards

The visit was kicked off in style by Newmarket Pipe Band, who played for the Judges in front of the James O’Keeffe Institute. Following this the Judges were led into the Donal Murphy Board room where they were showed a video showcasing the changes in industry over Newmarket’s 399 year history. IRD Duhallow CEO Maura Walsh, local GP Dr Bertie Daly and local teacher and MC for the day Donal O’ Sullivan each gave a 10-minute presentation.

Members of Newmarket Pipe Band welcoming the Judges to Newmarket on a beautiful, sunny Monday morning their base in Newmarket.

Following completion of the presentation the judges were given a tour of Newmarket Town separately in Volkswagen cars supplied for the morning by local business Newmarket Motors.

During this visit to the town the judges were divided so as to ensure as much of the town was seen as possible. The three judges visited a range of local businesses with one of the highlights being the Newmarket BNS students singing Up Up Newmarket to the Judges. Another feature of the visit was a tour of the recently developed McAuliffe Clan Centre in the old Protestant church.

Lyre U12 football team wins first silverware

A great day was had by the U12 Football team from Lyre on Saturday week last as they claimed their first silverware after an epic battle against Milford in Churchtown on a scoreline of Lyre 7:6(27) to Milford 4:8(20) after extra time. The U12 squad made themselves heard on the journey back to Lyre Community Centre where they celebrated for a couple of hours. Juvenile club chairman James Kearney congratulated the team and challenged them to greater success, and Lyre Club Chairman Fergus Murphy also congratulated the boys for their achievement. The club would like to thank Jersey sponsors Martin Cremin (Cutsue concrete polishing) and Ken O'Connell Electrical for the Jersey sponsorship and also Mark Flynn (Facecook) for past sponsorship and for providing the food on the night.

Make Way Day in Duhallow IRD Duhallow is delighted to be supporting The Disability Federation of Ireland National Initiative called Make Way Day. The initiative, supported nationally by 19 Local Authorities including Cork County Council is a campaign to bring the disability and wider community together to consider the needs of people with disabilities in the public spaces we all share.

The Make Way Day Campaign is about encouraging people to think about and remove obstacles or obstructions from their local area, businesses, and in residential areas to make it easier for those with disabilities to get around on a daily basis.

Navigating narrow, obstructed

streets is a daily struggle for with a disability. Solving this problem could be as easy as cutting a hedge which is overgrowing onto the footpath, removing obstacles such as sandwich boards and allowing a metre to make way.

These are all things which many people would not even realise are causing a problem, but pose a big problem for those with a disability.

The other most common issues include; cars parked on footpaths, bicycles illegally parked and bins left on footpaths.

On Thursday, 26th September, members of the public across Duhallow are to become more aware of these issues and are encouraged to draw attention to the challenges posed by everyday obstructions within their own local areas.

People can join the movement by taking their own photos and videos of any obstables they come across and sharing them on social media using #MakeWayDay, #MakeWayDayDuhallow and #MakeWayCork.

Mothers and Others are on the ball Newmarket Gaelic4Mothers& Others (G4MO) started in May of this year with the initiative gaining huge success nationally.

The Gaelic4Mothers&Others initiative sees women playing Ladies Gaelic Football in a fun, noncompetitive and social environment.

Gaelic4Mothers&Others provides an opportunity for women to get their recommended weekly exercise in a fun way while meeting other women.

Newmarket has attracted over 50 players from Newmarket to Kanturk, Boherbue, Kiskeam, Knocknagree, Kilbrin, Ballydesmond and even some women crossing the border from Cordal in Co Kerry.

Levels of ability are mixed with many of the players that won the County Final with Newmarket Ladies Football in 1995 coming out of retirement. More have never played football.

Jeremiah Roche and Former Ireland Rugby star Tony Buckley are coaching the team. Ath Trasna Medical Centre has already sponsored a

On Saturday last 31st August, Newmarket hosted a blitz with teams from Douglas, St Nicks, Banteer, Bishopstown, Bride Rovers and Kildorrery with Newmarket entering two teams. The blitz was organised to support Lexie O Riordan, the daughter of one of the players with St Nicks, who was born with a rare genetic disorder known as Micirovillus inculsion Disease (MIVD).

Duhallow Carers

Taking better care of carers A fact that is not well known is that Duhallow has an elderly population, which is much higher than the rest of Cork County and is a whole 4% higher than the National Average.

The most recent census shows that 1,500 people in Duhallow classified themselves as a ‘homebased carer’.

In light of these startling statistics, IRD Duhallow recently successfully applied for a Dormant Accounts programme which would focus entirely on supporting family and voluntary carers within the region.

When you examine the statistics, one of the striking features of the profile of carers in Duhallow is the high proportion of males (41% of all carers are male, while 59% are female) and this new programme will place an emphasis on supporting male carers.

Care Alliance Ireland recently undertook a survey of 300 family carers across Ireland. A startling statistic from that survey is that over half (59%) of respondents said they felt lonely or isolated either ‘often’ or ‘always’, with a further 37% saying they ‘sometimes’ felt that way.

This new Dormant Accounts training programme is entirely focused on Supporting Carers. IRD Duhallow is very conscious that many of the region’s carers come from different backgrounds, and have no experience in Health Care.

This is about making people that little bit more confident in their caring role and acquiring knowledge that will make life that little bit easier.

This Autumn/Winter a wide range of courses will be offered, from Patient Moving and Handling to Supports for Parents of Children with Autism and Care of the Elderly QQI Modules.

There are also courses such as Yoga and Personal Development to allow carers to destress in a safe and confidential environment.

Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments Project Launch Tuesday the 20th of August saw the offical launch of a new five year programme entitled ‘Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments’.

The €1.47million project is co-funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) through the European Innovation Partnership for Agriculture Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-Agri).

The project will develop a farmer focused approach to supporting local agriculture along with enhancing the freshwater environment which will help restore and protect the high status of the Allow River catchment.

IRD Duhallow will lead the project, building upon the wealth of knowledge and experience gained through working with the agricultural community on a wide variety of high profile agri-environment initiatives.

IRD Duhallow has previously coordinated two large scale EU Life programmes in the region, SAMOK and Raptor Life. These are focused on the conservation of protected habitats and species and put the Duhallow community at the core of the conservation efforts. These aim to improve the natural ecosystems of the Mullaghareirk Mountains and Blackwater River catchment by working closely with landowners.

The IRD Duhallow Life projects have so far seen an excellent suite of results designed to prevent

Target species which benefit from these actions are the local populations of freshwater pearl mussel, salmon, lamprey, otter, kingfisher and hen harrier.

Through engagement with the farmers in the North Cork catchments of the Rivers Allow, Dalua and Owenanare, participating farmers will select a number of actions designed to enhance the river ecosystem by creating sustainable agricultural practices which enhance wetland and freshwater ecosystem services.

their actions. In addition, a network of demonstration farms will be established as case studies of best practice in farming for high status rivers. The project will develop farm specific solutions to water quality and biodiversity issues arising in the catchment. With the essential input of participating farmers, farm plans will develop innovative solutions to mitigate the pressures of agriculture on the rivers.

Measures undertaken will be designed in such a way that farm productivity is not compromised, generating an economically and ecologically sustainable model for farming in Blue Dot catchments.

The Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments project is currently open to applications and all those farming in the catchments of the Allow, Dalua and Owenanare rivers are eligible to submit an expression of interest.

Further public information evenings will be held in Meelin Community Centre on September 16th, Freemount Community Centre on September 23rd, Glash Community Centre on September 30th and James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket on October 7th.
