Kanturk AFC scrap day a success Kanturk AFC had their‘ Scrap Saturday‘ collection in the club grounds recently. It was a great success and the club would like to thank everybody that contributed to their fundraiser.

This fundraiser was organised to try and offset the reduced club income this year due to the restrictions of Covid-19.

A club spokesperson said: “We are delighted to report that our total take will be a great help towards our annual club outgoings. We were very fortunate with the weather and enjoyed chatting to everybody that called in.

A look back in time

The Newmarket

By MICHAEL FLANAGAN Newmarket Rat Racing Festival, July 1971: Fifty years on and it is all coming back to me, as if it was only yesterday, how time flies!

My very good friend Ray Ryan, a well known reporter for The Corkman newspaper, happened to attend a festival meeting in Newmarket in the hope of getting some local news. I had on the agenda for the meeting various projects that we were hoping to undertake for the forthcoming festival, one of which was All Ireland Rat Racing.

This is a great idea said Ray, but how are you going to run it and where will you get the rats? Never mind I said, I have it all worked out.

(At this stage it was only a thought.)

The following week the front page of The Corkman read as follows: “Wanted Urgently: 100 Sleek Agile Rats in Newmarket.”

There was a programme on TV at the time called Newsbeat, presented and edited by Frank Hall and they went around the country looking for unusual good news items and our luck was in when they read the Corkman.

The following Monday I received a call from a Joe McCarthy, a TV cameraman with Newsbeat living in Cork city, asking me had we many rats in training. At first I thought it was someone having me on, but Joe insisted that it was for real and that he and the RTE reporter Cathal O’Shannon would be in Newmarket on Wednesday around lunchtime to film the rats in training.

I was in shock! Where was I going to get a few rats at such short notice?! I rang a farmer near Ballydesmond who I knew had some rat cages and sure enough he gave me two. On the Tuesday

I came back at lunch time to find I had caught two crows with their bellies full. I released them and baited up again. I called back after work at around 6pm, to find two more crows looking out at me.

To say I was getting frustrated is putting it very mildly. I had no option only to bait up again and I prayed and promised money to all the holy Saints I could think of, to please send a few rats in my direction. This time I waited until it was getting dark and all the crows had gone home to roost. At exactly 12 midnight my prayers were

answered: I had succeeded in catching a big brown rat the size of a cat and triumphantly headed for home.

Wednesday morning was spent making a cage with a glass front so we could show off the rat to the TV audience. We had everything set when Joe McCarthy and Cathal O’Shannon arrived complete with television camera. I had to explain to Cathal that this was the first rat we had in training and that he was camera shy. He stayed at the back of the cage and the cameraman could not get a good picture of him.

At this stage I had the cage on the top of my car outside the digs in New Street and a large crowd had gathered to see what all the fuss was about. Cathal suggested I open the front of the cage a little and he might move forward.

Sure enough he rushed forward, out of the cage, up the street, into Cronin’s shop and in behind the counter. I followed him in and in my frantic attempts to catch him I accidentally put him to sleep. I emerged with him on the back of an asbestos glove and everyone was amazed he was so tame, not realising of course he had sadly gone to see his maker.

What’s the world coming to, rat racing in Newmarket, is Flanagan gone off his rocker?! It was then I realised we had something very special and a great means to publicise the festival and the town.

Now I had to make it happen with

Part 1 of 2 the help of a great committee. It soon became very clear to me that trying to race brown rats was out of the question and furthermore it was dangerous. I rang a friend of mine, a professor in Trinity University, who was doing experiments with white rats and asked him if we could get about 20 for our Rat Racing Festival. Within a few days I had a big box of white rats waiting for me at Mallow Train Station. I kept them in a shed at the back of my digs in New Street, where Gene and Treasa O’Sullivan ran an excellent guest house. This was about three weeks before the finals and you could see the rats growing week by the week.

Our next project was to organise a race track. After several brainstorming meetings we came up with a 25 metre horizontal six lane track with Perspex on both sides, complete with starting stalls and finishing gates. We trained the rats to run by keeping the feeding at the finishing line. Some would run half way and turn back while others were flyers and go from start to finish. We ran an advertising campaign whereby you could sponsor and name a rat for ten shillings. This was a real money spinner and we had sponsors from all over the country eager to have a rat running in the first ever All Ireland Rat Racing Championship.

On the morning of the race I went out to feed the white army, as usual, and to my horror there was no rat to be seen anywhere.

I looked everywhere in the shed and eventually made a few enquiries around the town, but to no avail. Were they stolen, kidnapped or killed..?!

Make Way Day highlighted access issues for people with a disability

By JACINTA CARROLL IRD Duhallow is delighted to be supporting The Disability Federation of Ireland national initiative called Make Way Day. The Make Way Day campaign brings together a wide range of local voluntary groups and government bodies. It is a campaign to bring the disability and wider community together to consider the needs of people with disabilities in the public spaces we all share.

The Make Way Day Campaign is about encouraging people to think about and remove obstacles or obstructions from their local area, businesses, and in residential areas to make it easier for those with disabilities to get around on a daily basis.

Navigating narrow, obstructed streets is a daily struggle for anyone with a disability. Solving this problem could be as easy as cutting a hedge which is overgrowing onto the footpath, removing obstacles such as sandwich boards and allowing a metre to make way. These are all things which many people would not even realise are causing a problem, but pose a big problem for those with a disability.

The other most common issues include: cars parked on footpaths, bicycles illegally parked and bins left on footpaths.

On Friday, September 25th, a national day of awareness took place, where members of the public across Duhallow became more aware of these issues and were encouraged to draw attention to the challenges posed by everyday obstructions within their local areas.

held in a ‘virtual’ capacity due to safety concerns related to the current ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

People can continue to join the movement by taking their own photos and videos of any obstacles they come across and sharing them on social media using #MakeWayDay20, #MakeWayDayDuhallow and #MakeWayDayCork.

year Ability Programme, which is currently in its final year. The Ability Programme, which is co-financed by the Irish Government and the European Social Fund as part of the ESF Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning 2014-2020, aims to support young people with disabilities (aged 15-29 years) to improve their employability and social skills through a range of person-centred supports.

Young people who participate in the Ability programme will be supported with tailored training and career guidance support as well as having an opportunity to take part in work preparation training.

VINTAGE COLLAGIST CLAIRE O’KEEFFE: Artist, Newmarket, County Cork Artist Claire O’Keeffe, who lives and works in Newmarket, Co. Cork, graduated with a BA Honours in Fine Art from CIT Crawford College of Art & Design in 2015. She works predominantly in the medium of collage.

All of the imagery is vintage, culled from encyclopedias, medical text, gardening manuals, popular science books and magazines, typically scoured from charity shops. It’s hugely significant to Claire’s practice to use salvaged books as she is intrigued by the idea of it having a past life.

“When I discover a book that I see potential in, I get very excited that an item that has been discarded will be resurrected in an artwork,” she says.

Each collage element is hand cut and sometimes colour is added to enrich and enhance.

The 3-dimensional effect lends additional visual drama and showcases the meticulous nature of the cuttings.

Curious landscapes, flora and fauna, the human figure, architecture and space are examples that are brought to life with contrasting and harmonious colours and bold compositions.

As Claire explains, “I am a story teller and I welcome you to join me on this visual journey.”

She has exhibited across Ireland and her work is part of both private and public collections, which include PM Group Cork, Eli Lilly Cork and Áth Trasna Medical Centre, Newmarket.

COVID-19 During the summer, when classroom training was replaced with virtual and online training, we took the time to configure our training rooms to a very high Covid-19 compliance standard. We use a decontaminator to deep clean each training area before and after each class. Face coverings must be worn during all training sessions, and we have reduced our class sizes to allow for 2-meter social distancing. Where 2-meter social distancing is not possible we have installed Perspex dividers on both sides of the desks to resemble individual pods. Hand sanitizers are available in each training room, and at the entrance to all buildings. Our Covid-19 policy is available to all trainers and trainees.

Yoga practice improves health Simon Pachikara of the Boherbue Traditional Indian Yoga Centre says that “yoga practice is for health, long life, peace, prosperity and spiritual enlightenment”.

An example of the physical benefits, he asserts, can be seen from the headstand, pictured right, which he says “normalises blood pressure and aids rejuvenation”.

He adds that the mental benefits of the headstand include: increased memory and intellectual capacity; improved concentration – particularly beneficial to people who need strong powers of concentration in their work such as students, politicians, artists, scientists and writers; and improved sensory faculties (most notably eyesight and hearing).

“Those people who practice the headstand on a regular basis will be

far less likely to suffer from nervous disorders,” he says.

Of the physical benefits of the shoulder stand (right), he says this brings a rich blood supply to the thyroid.

“The thyroid is massaged and is actively regulated.

The thyroid regulates the body’s metabolism and heat production,” he explains. “It promotes protein synthesis and proper growth of the muscle and bone tissues. It controls the heart rate, heart contractibility and blood pressure. Weight problems (over and under) are often the result of thyroid problems. The shoulder stand helps to bring the thyroid to its proper level of activity.

“The shoulder stand stimulates and regulates the parathyroid gland.

The parathyroid helps to maintain proper calcium levels in the blood and tissues.

“This pose centralises the blood supply in the spinal column and feeds the spine abundantly. It keeps the spine strong and elastic. It helps to maintain a youthful figure and smooth skin.”

He says the mental benefits of the shoulder stand are that it relieves mental sluggishness; and that it helps to alleviate insomnia and depression.

Duhallow Career Guidance Q & A

LIFE AS... an Agricultural Advisor Michael Morrissey is an Agricultural Consultant based at IRD Duhallow in Newmarket, Co Cork...

Considering what career path to take? This series of Q&A interviews with Duhallow professionals offers candid insights into what the job really entails...

1. What is your job description?

My job title would be described as an Agricultural Consultant or Agricultural Advisor. The role focuses mainly on assisting farmers in the preparation and application of Agricultural Environmental Schemes (AES).

These agricultural schemes are funded jointly be the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the European Commission. The aim of existing AES’s is to foster a more sustainable agricultural productive system that supports, protects and enhances biodiversity and the environment. In my current role as the Agricultural Environmental specialist with IRD Duhallow in the Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP project I am administering a results based project in the Allow river catchment. The aim of the results based approach is to reward farmers for environmentally friendly practices and sustainable farming practises. The project will run for five years informing interested stakeholders and policy makers on best practise approaches to protecting and enhancing river catchments in agricultural dominated areas.

2. What is your job like?

The role involves a high level of interaction with the project applicants to ensure project actions are implemented. Time is divided evenly between office duties and field visits.

As the project is a results based approach, surveying of habitats is an important element of the workload.

An adequate level of fitness is required as field surveys can take between two and four hours to complete. The administration or office side of the project requires maintaining working files for each applicant in the project and liaising with interested stakeholders such as the EIP section of the Department of Agriculture.

3. What subjects did you most enjoy in school/college?

My favourite subjects in college would have been any subject or module with a practical or field based element to it. To list a few that were something to look forward to would include habitat classification and survey and the plant identification module. These field based surveying skills I learned in college have proved to be very useful to me in my current position.

4. How did you arrive at your current position?

I commenced my current position with IRD Duhallow as the AgriEnvironmental Specialist on the EIP Project in 2019. For the previous number of years before that I worked as a regional co-coordinator in the Kerry/Limerick region managing a number of advisors in the region and a client list in the South Kerry region.

The role allowed me to develop my skills set in managing a substantial client list while also co-ordinating advisors throughout the region.

5. What do you love most?

The best part of the job as an agricultural advisor is the field survey element, although I would say surveying and field visits in the winter months can be a challenge.

I have been fortunate in both my current position and previous positions to have carried out field visits in some very scenic parts of the country including North & West Cork, South & West Kerry and West Clare.

6. What do you love least?

The work can be very technical on occasion with a robust quality assurance system a necessity to ensure applications and environmental plans are up to standard. Strong organisational skills are a must to manage workloads adequately to avoid problems further down line when scheme payments require verification.

7. Advice for students hoping for a career in your field?

Agricultural Environmental Schemes require field visits to draft plans.

Adequate preparation prior to a field visit is a necessity with strong organisational skills a must for the job. It is of great benefit to know the client history and utilise a desk top study of the applicant’s holding before conducting any field survey.

It is of primary importance to study and know the Terms & Conditions and scheme specifications inside out before conducting any meeting with an applicant. The vast majority of errors in farm plans arise out of a lack of understanding of the requirements of a scheme. A good filing system and record keeping will allow for rapid problem solving if the need arises. One of the most important parts of the job is to provide transparency for interested stake holders such as the applicant.

WATER IS A PRIORITY It is estimated that agriculture, industry and domestic use exploit more than a third of the world’s renewable freshwater. As a result of increasing water pollution and sources of pollutants, the sustainability of potable water sources has become a priority across Ireland.

The majority of drinking water in Ireland originates from surface waters, with the remainder coming from ground water and springs.

Surface water sources are particularly utilised for public water supplies. The uplands of Ireland provide the source for the vast majority of potable water, in particular upland conifer plantations.

The European Union’s Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EEC policy aims for the protection and improvement of all water resources and aquatic ecosystems. The primary objective of the Framework is for the enhancement of all waters.

Ireland has developed a Water Framework Directive Master Plan (WFDMP) based primarily on a new ecological management plan for water resources and the eight river basin catchments which span Ireland.

The Water Quality in Ireland 20132018 report evaluated the ecological health of water bodies throughout the country, collecting data from 2,703 surface water bodies and 514 groundwater bodies. The report states that since the 20102015 equivalent evaluation of the ecological health of Ireland’s water bodies there was a net decline of 4.4% in ecological health.

Streams and rivers play a dual purpose as a freshwater ecosystem and as a source of potable water and in the sustainment of a wide diversity of plant and animal communities. These freshwater ecosystems provide suitable spawning sites for Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) and Brown Trout

The juveniles of both species revel in these habitats due to reduced competition from other species as a result of low species diversity. The primary threats for water quality and to fresh water sources within the uplands arise from agricultural catchment areas.

Pollutants from farm effluents, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and the bacterial contamination of soil and water is a recognised concern in these catchments. Logging and clear felling of conifer plantations pose risks associated with the addition of excess phosphorus and sediment to adjacent surface waters. Another identified risk to riverine ecosystems results from the addition of sediment as a result of overgrazing and burning of peatland. The addition of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) to freshwater is a notable risk in upland environments, with the greatest source of DOC to surface waters coming from peat. Sediment is added to streams and rivers via

overland flow and stream discharge, subsequently increased DOC levels result in discolouration to water.

Increased DOC levels raise the threat of biological contamination, thus increasing the cost for local authorities for clean potable water.

Species or groups of species which establish the standard of an environment are referred to as biological or ecological indicators.

The use of invertebrates as biological indicators offers the potential to quantify the impacts of disturbances to the biodiversity of ecosystems over short term as well as long term. These invertebrates are widely used to assess the ecological and conservational status of sites as they are an indicator species for establishing the quality of river ecosystems.

Biological indicator surveys can help establish the effect land management practices can have on a habitat and can also help compare species assemblages between habitat types.

Don’t ignore pets’ old age aches Our older dog and cat companions sometimes get a raw deal. They have given us years of faithful companionship; mornings full of woodland walks together and evenings of cuddles on the couch. They are our silent, loyal companions for years before they ‘begin to slow down’ with old age.

Yes, a certain degree of taking life at a slower pace is natural as our pets age, but we should be careful not to do them the disservice of ignoring a problem. Commonly I hear owners say of their older pets: “Well, she’s slowing down a bit in the last while, she’s a bit stiff in herself some mornings getting up, and can’t jump up on to the sofa as easily as before. She’s a bit slower on her walks too – but that’s old age isn’t it?!“

They usually finish with a summary of “She’s a bit stiff, but she’s not in pain or anything…”

I try to break the news of their misunderstanding gently.

“Unfortunately, she is in pain,” I will say. “The stiffness and reduction in mobility you describe tells me that she may be suffering from arthritis in her joints, which can be very uncomfortable indeed. Our pets are very good at hiding their pain.”

Horrified that they might have missed picking up on their pet’s pain, they respond: “But she didn’t whine or cry or yelp or anything!

She’s not limping either!”

“I know,” I will say. “Usually the signs of joint pain are more subtle than that. A little stiffness, slower on their walks, not happy to jump into the car… Sometimes they can just seem a little sad or grumpier than usual! The important thing is that we’ve spotted it together now, so we can take action to help her with pain relief so that her quality of life will improve.”

As vets, we are here to help you spot the things it takes a professionally trained eye (or ear!) to notice. So, take your older pet for its check up every 6-12 months.

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A 1. What/who inspired you to become a sportsperson?

Dad and Mary Collins were great role models. I always felt lucky to play with Rockchapel and players like the Reilly sisters, the Kelly Sisters, Ger O’Flynn, the list was endless. Seamus Moynihan was my favourite player growing up and I was lucky enough to meet him a few years back.

2. What was the moment that you knew you were on the right track?

After I marked Cora Staunton in the All Ireland Final vs Mayo in 2007... The defensive unit was impenetrable that day and I was selected as player of the match.

For years after, that was the match I would try and replicate.

3. What is your greatest strength?

Playing with the lads underage and not being as physically strong as them meant I had to learn how to read the game well early on. That stood to me later. I had a bit of speed as well.

4. What is your greatest sporting achievement?

Being part of that remarkable Cork Ladies Football team for nearly 17 years. Thankfully, I didn’t suffer too much with injury and was lucky to play every minute of all 11 All Ireland Finals.

5. What is your greatest personal achievement?

Welcoming our healthy baby boy, Cárthach Óg into the world last October. I feel so fortunate to have had so many great days in the Cork jersey, but nothing will compare to the day we brought him home from the hospital. The best day of my life so far.

6. What was the greatest challenge of your career?

I injured my hamstring at three important stages of 2017. More significant was when you realise the rollercoaster is coming to an

Bríd Stack is a native of Rockchapel.

It was here in her local national school, under the guidance of her father Michael, that she developed her love for Gaelic football. This was fostered further by playing underage football with Rockchapel boys teams.

Managed by the great Mary and Jesse Collins, Bríd also played adult football with Rockchapel Ladies from a young age and enjoyed many great years at Junior, Intermediate and Senior level. Most notable for the club were the All Ireland successes in 1999 and 2000.

Bríd went for her first trial for the Cork U-14 team and played on every Cork underage team up to minor level. She captained the Cork minor team to All Ireland success in 2003.

She studied PE and Maths at the University of Limerick and as a first end and the girls you started out with begin to step away from the panel. It just wasn’t the same, and while I loved football, I wasn’t getting the same enjoyment out of it. The decision to retire was tough but I was so delighted to have more time to focus on my family and my business. I play senior club football now with St Vals and I still thoroughly enjoy it.

7. Who supported you the most in your career?

Mom and Dad were my greatest support system and I am forever indebted to them for investing so much in me. Mary Collins started as my coach with Rockchapel, then became my manager with Cork, but throughout it all was my friend and always challenged me to get the best out of myself.

8. Any advice for young players just starting out?

Bríd Stack year student, won her first Senior All Ireland medal with Cork. During her time in UL, Bríd won four Senior All Ireland medals in a row from 2004 to 2007, captaining the College team to O’Connor Cup success in 2007. In the space of 12 years from 2005 to 2016, the team won 11 Senior All Ireland titles. In that time, Bríd also won 7 All Star awards, was named Munster Player of the Year in 2012 and Overall Ladies Football Player of the Year in 2016. The team was awarded RTE Team of the Year by public vote in 2014. After 17 years of playing senior inter-county football for Cork, Bríd announced her retirement in January 2019. She and husband Cárthach welcomed their first baby in October 2019. the more enjoyable it becomes to participate in. So it’s important to make sure you practice your skills early on, develop them as best you can and enjoy spending time with your friends as you do.

9. What do you do outside of sports?

I am currently on a career break but I have been a PE and Maths teacher in Carrigaline Community School since 2008. I set up a sports supplements and health supplements business called MyCore Supplements with my husband Cárthach and brothers in law Fiachra and Fionn back in 2017 and it continues to go well.

10. What are your goals going forward?

I hope to remain in good health to celebrate many special days ahead with my family. I also hope to continue playing sport for as long as I’m physically able and as long as I get enjoyment from it.
