HOW TO CONTROL SLUGS Public enemy number 1! And every gardener knows who it is. Yep, the garden slug!

In lists of the top 10 garden pests the slug, or snail always comes out on top. Why is this? Maybe because he has such a large appetite, perhaps because he is fairly indiscriminate, munching away on prize cabbages, lettuce, strawberries and dahlias or lupins.

Slugs know what they like, and they like a lot of it. A newly planted row of seedlings can be destroyed overnight, carrots are gone as soon as they have germinated, and even large plants can be sabotaged and eaten to nothing in a short space of time. It is strange then how a wide variety of plants in our gardens remain untouched by the slug.

Weeds of course. Have you ever stood in your garden looking at your savaged row of succulent veg in between strong, healthy, perfect looking weeds? I know I have and it got me thinking. Why do slugs target our vegetable and ornamental plants, and why do they destroy them so completely? It isn’t in the best interests of a pest to completely destroy its food plant or there will be nothing for its offspring to feed on. Nature maintains an equilibrium between plant, pest and predator.

After a lot of deliberation, I’ve come up with three explanations for this bias shown by our slimy friends.

First of all, we have been cultivating plants for thousands of years to suit our sweet taste buds and our cultivated cabbages, carrots, lettuce etc are so much sweeter, juicier and more tender than their wild counterparts that of course slugs and snails and every other creature is going to favour them over tough, bitter tasting weeds. By selectively breeding for flavour and tenderness, we have bred out the plants’ natural defence against pests, which is

often an unpalatable bitterness or toughness.

Secondly, in our desire to control the world around us, we have systematically destroyed the ecosystem of which we are a part, along with every other living thing.

In doing so we have destroyed habitats, nesting sites, food sources for countless creatures. The only ones thriving in our new world order are the ones who feed on our crops, and now are safe to do so as we have effectively removed all their natural predators, allowing them to live and breed safely.

Our attempts then to control the problem that we have created has led to further decimation of hedgehogs and birds through the use of poisonous slug pellets that will kill any creature that eats the poisoned slugs.

Thirdly, our liking for neat rows of succulent veg, all planted together cabbages here, lettuce there, a tasty courgette or two hiding in the corner, exacerbates the problem.

Slugs possess a powerful sense of smell and can detect a bed of cabbage plants from quite a distance. And once there, they have no reason to leave.

There are various methods of camouflage or companion planting that might help to hide our crops

from slugs, anecdotally some seem to work, but it is for each gardener to experiment and see what works for them.

Top tips for controlling slugs: n Create wild spaces and encourage as much biodiversity as possible, hedges for blackbirds and thrushes, rotting logs for ground beetles and hedgehogs, ponds and ditches for frogs n Only plant out strong and healthy seedlings. Slugs are attracted to plants that are struggling n When covering winter beds, remove cover once or twice for a few days to allow birds to clear out the hibernating slugs and slug eggs n Trap slugs under planks of wood, stones and cardboard. Remove them and their eggs as soon as you see them n Avoid mulching around tender plants, you are just providing hiding places for slugs. n Avoid watering polytunnels in the evening if slugs are a problem.

Water thoroughly in the morning and allow the soil to dry completely on the surface n In extreme circumstances only, organic slug pellets are available which do not harm any other wildlife. These can be a life saver on emerging carrot seedlings for example.

Duhallow news

Kanturk RFC aiming for longest try relay Kanturk RFC committee members at the newlydeveloped grounds which will officially be opened on the weekend of August 21st Kanturk Rugby Football Club is putting itself on the map by taking on the longest try relay next month.

Everyone is invited to take part in this unique event, which is being held to raise funds for the club along with Mercy House Support Group and Kanturk Community Hospital. It will take place over Friday, August 21st and Saturday, August 22nd.

Everyone is welcome to join in.

Participants will walk or run the distance from Kanturk Rugby Football Club to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin by completing 759 laps of the pitch. This equates to a total distance of 253km.

Those taking part will be given an allocated time and a rugby ball to carry – representing the baton.

By LISA MATASSA Participants can walk or run the laps at their own pace as the emphasis is on coming together to enjoy a great initiative and raise much needed funds for very worthy local community supports.

The relay will continue throughout the night and the aim is to complete it by 4pm on Saturday, August 22nd but the fun won’t stop there! The Munster v Leinster Pro 14 match is being held at the Aviva that day and, weather permitting, Kanturk RFC will host an outdoor viewing of the game for everyone to enjoy. The club bar will be open, subject to Covid-19 guidelines.

How you can support the cause Kanturk RFC is encouraging everyone to take part in the longest try relay – all are very welcome and every support is appreciated. It promises to be a great event for families, supporters, players and friends.

The club is also taking the opportunity to officially launch its newly developed facilities that weekend.

It has added a new training pitch and made many improvements to the existing grounds, including extended parking, fresh tarmac on walk and driveways and upgraded flood lighting on the pitches. This has made the playing facilities even better, allowing players and supporters to enjoy rugby at the club throughout the full season.

The works were made possible by LEADER funding, secured by IRD Duhallow and a sports capital grant.

“We are simply delighted with the newly developed training pitch and grounds,” said John D O’Connor, President of Kanturk RFC. “The club is a very important amenity serving the whole Duhallow community. People come from far and wide and our membership continues to grow. The emphasis is on inclusiveness – one of the many qualities that make the club unique.

The new improvements will make the experience on and off the pitch even stronger.”

Covid tracker a hit More than one quarter of the adult population of Ireland has already downloaded the HSE’s Covid Tracker app which was launched only two weeks ago.

It has become the world’s most successful tracker app at over one million downloads.

The tracker is a free and easy to use mobile phone app that can: n alert you if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus n advise you on what to do to protect yourself and others n alert other app users that you were in close contact with, if you test positive for coronavirus.

The app uses Bluetooth and anonymous IDs to log close contact with any phone that also has the app.

It protects the privacy of all app users, and it n does not collect your name, age or address n does not hold your phone number unless you choose to share it n cannot be used to track your location n cannot be used to check if you should be self-isolating n can only access information on your phone that you choose to allow n cannot be used to identify your close contacts n cannot be used to identify people who have tested positive for coronavirus.

Covid-19

Face coverings save lives Everyone in Ireland has helped to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

We have worked together in very difficult circumstances to help save many lives.

Now that our communities are re-opening, we all want to stay safe and keep protecting each other from coronavirus. We do this by cleaning our hands, social distancing and covering sneezes and coughs.

We can also do this by wearing a face covering. Face coverings help prevent people who don’t know they have the virus from spreading it to others. They should be worn anywhere it’s difficult to stay 2m apart, like shops or public transport, or when visiting anyone who is more at risk. This includes people aged over 70, or people who are medically vulnerable.

The Government has announced

that it is to make it mandatory to wear a face covering in enclosed public places such as shops.

It is already compulsory to wear one on public transport.

Even when you wear a face covering, you should still do the

important things necessary to prevent the spread of the virus.

These precautions include: n Social distancing n Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough and sneeze n Washing your hands properly and often n Not touching your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.

The HSE will be continuing to support people to do this with an advertising campaign on radio, social media, posters, search advertising, and on the HSE website, https://www.hse.ie. The television advertising campaign began airing on June 23rd.

Lots of activity at Peg keeps tabs with Freemount Macra Discover Duhallow The Avondhu regional round of Farm Skills took place in Banteer last Sunday evening.

Well done to Freemount Macra club members who took part on the day – Danny Lane, Neilus Lehane, Brendan Buckley, David Fenton, Michèal O'Neill and Tomàs O'Neill.

Recently members went for a club walk to Mount Hillary. A great morning was had by all who attended.

Dairy stock judging took part recently. Well done to all club members that took part but in particular to Aoife O'Connor on progressing to the final stages in the U21 category.

Ability made possible

By JACINTA CARROLL IRD Duhallow’s Ability Programme aims to support young people with disabilities (15-29 years of age) to improve their employability through a range of person-centered supports. Participants are supported with tailored training and career guidance supports to prepare them to participate in work placement with local employers and to improve their employment prospects.

Another aim of the programme is to engage and support local employers to recruit and retain staff with disabilities and build the capacity of employers to integrate disability awareness into the workplace. This is due to the fact that research shows that People with a Disability are only half as likely to be in employment as others of working age (National Disability Authority).

The Ability Programme assists in breaking down barriers and provides Young People with a disability access to meaningful employment opportunities.

In order to support these aims to date, IRD Duhallow held a Breakfast Seminar for employers entitled ‘Fostering Work Place Equality’. On the morning, Laura Reidy, Senior HR Consultant and Trainer with the HR Suite, spoke on Equality Laws while Dermot Crosby of the DEASP spoke on the range of supports available to employers for hiring those with a disability, including the Wage Subsidy Scheme, Workplace Equipment/Adaptation Grant, Employee Retention Scheme and Disability Awareness Training to name but a few.

In order to support one of the key objectives of the programme, which is that participants secure meaningful employment and gain experience of participating in a working environment through the provision of work placement and

Each participant completes intensive work preparation training and one-to-one coaching and mentoring, supporting them to make informed choices about their work and careers and providing them with the necessary resources to seek, obtain and be successful in gaining employment.

Prior to their work placement, an Occupational Therapist carries out a vocational assessment with each participant to determine their strengths, interests and aspirations.

IRD Duhallow’s Youth Disability Engagement Officer works with each employer to assist with workplace integration and to provide on the job coaching and

Inset, Joseph Collins completed his work placement with Duhallow Furniture REVAMP support for the Young Person for the duration of their placement.

To date, nine Young People have been supported to participate in a work placement through the programme in the areas of food, catering, finance & accounts, furniture restoration, delivery work, horticulture and retail.

These placements helped to improve each Young Person’s confidence, social connectivity and to integrate the young person into the local community. The provision of work experience is also hugely beneficial as it adds new experience to a CV and provides a recent employer reference.

WALKING: Mull Location: Mullaghareirk Mountains are located north of Meelin. They can be accessed via Newmarket by taking the R 578 for Charleville and taking a left turn at Mountkeeffe Cross for Meelin. Passing through Meelin Village, turn right heading for Rowls and Broadford. After about 6 miles, turn left for the trail-head.

Trail-head: The trail-head is located in Mullaghareirk Forest. There is room for 10-12 cars. The nearest shops are in Meelin (6 miles). Nearest services (toilets, shops, restaurant, etc.) are available in Newmarket (9 miles).

Loops description: All four loops start from the trail-head at the entrance to forestry in the valley of the Glashawee River near Mullaghareirk. The loops are arranged in pairs – the green and blue circle Banane Hill, the red and purple take a walker onto the

shoulder of Mullaghareirk. The first kilometre of the green and blue loops takes the walker along the south of the Glashawee River before turning south for another 1 km.

Reaching a T-junction of tracks the loops turn left and head west for 500m after which they both swing sharp left, facing north again. After 100m the loops separate – the green continues straight for the 1.5km back to the trail-head, while the blue turns right and sweeps around Rowls Langford North. Both loops re-join 500m from the trail-head. The red and purple loops start out on forestry track to the right of the map board. After crossing the Glashawee river they proceed straight at a three-way junction – just 50m before turning left onto a forestry track. For over 2km the walker is taken along the north side of the river to reach a three-way junction where the loops diverge. The red loop turns right and after 2.5km re-joins the river. The more challenging purple loop turns left and ascends along a mix of forestry and grassy tracks to reach the highest point (400m) close to the summit of Mullaghareirk – from here it makes a 3km descent to the river where it re-joins the red loop for the last 100m back to the trail-head.

Alternative trail head option, instead of driving into the forestry, is in Rowls Langford South. Drive 5km out of Meelin on the Broadford road, turn left at Breen’s Cross (Hayes Cross) 52.305754, -9.010947, this is the first crossroads out of Meelin. There is a Sli sign and Trailhead sign at it. EMERGENCY FUND SCHEME Cork County Council’s Covid-19 Community Emergency Fund Scheme is open for applications.

Cork County Council, as part of its Covid-19 Community Support Programme, established an emergency fund for groups across County Cork assisting in the response efforts to Covid-19.

Following the previous allocation of €70,757 to groups across the County in June, a second round of funding is now open for applications. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, Cork County Council has been working with a range of community support and advocacy agencies to administer tangible and financial support to communities, facilitating collection and delivery of vital supplies, meals on wheels, friendly call services and transport, among other vital services.

As our communities begin to reopen and many emerge from cocooning, it has become apparent that the supports required by these communities are changing.

Groups and organisations are invited to apply through an online application process for the fund at www.yourcouncil.ie. Priority will be given to groups incurring expenditure in the course of addressing

social isolation, community support and engagement, for example re-opening of community facilities.

Mary Linehan Foley acknowledges the invaluable role that community and voluntary groups have played in the Covid-19 response, saying: “Community and voluntary groups across the county have worked tirelessly throughout the Covid-19 crisis to adapt their services and ensure that the vulnerable in our communities have been well

looked after. I’m glad to see the announcement of this second round of funding to help with reopening of facilities and resumption of services, as we emerge from a period of physical and social isolation for so many.”

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey, says, “The success of Cork County Council’s Community Support Programme has been achieved with the help of a number of groups, each of whom have gone above and beyond since the beginning of this crisis.

“We recognise the evolving challenges faced by many, as we move through the phased reopening of our economy and society. This funding is tailored to help these groups adapt their services to the future requirements of re-opening and to help them continue their work in the interests of the community.”

Here are some tips to help: n Validate your emotions: Acknowledge that it is normal to feel fear and anxiety in a pandemic and especially during a time of change and uncertainty. RISE OF RARE BREEDS Ireland has been blessed with a number of rare breed animals from cows to horses offering us a precious link to the past.

The smallholding subsistence farming is a thing of the years gone by now; however, there has been a resurgence of rare breeds in recent times. These breeds were generally hardy animals that could graze marginal and upland areas where animals suited to the low land would not thrive. Agricultural environmental schemes such as AEOS and GLAS have rewarded farmers keeping rare breeds. As a result, numbers have increased throughout the country.

As part requirement to participate in these schemes the herd owner must be a registered member of the individual rare breed societies. Three of these rare breeds are considered dual purpose breeds, including the Dexter, Droimeann and Kerry.

Dexter Cattle: The Dexter is a descendant of the ancient Celtic black cattle with the earliest record dating to 1845. The cattle were bred in the south-western counties of Ireland.

Often referred to as the poor man’s cow, this belies their true worth as an efficient breed with good quality milking and beef production abilities.

Droimeann Cattle: The Droimeann is recognised as the most ancient of all cattle breeds in Ireland dating back to 920 AD. The breed was on the verge of extinction. However, due to the dedication of several farmers it has received its rare breed status from the Department of Agriculture as late as

last year. The animal is mostly black in colour with a white strip along the middle of the back. On occasion the new born calf can be born with a speckled colour. The breed is unique in that it has a tune penned after it titled ‘An Droimeann Donn Dilis’.The song refers to the tale of a farmer blighted by high taxation. As a result, he must hand over his beloved Droimeann cow to settle his debt.

Kerry Cow: It is widely thought that the Kerry Cow breed is one of the oldest breeds of cows in Europe, coming to Irish shores somewhere around 2000 BC. The belief is it was the progeny of the Celtic Shorthorn brought to Ireland by Neolithic man.

The Kerry cow was originally bred for milk production. What was once of high importance to our ancestors now provides a tourist attraction in Killarney National park where a herd of Kerry cows graze the pastures.

The colouring of the animal is a very distinctive black colour with a little white on the udder. If the horns were left grow, they would be characterised by a distinctive white tip. Again, the animal can be small in stature, averaging 350-450kgs weight at maturity.

TACKLING PARASITES IN CATTLE Gutworm and lungworm in cattle can have a major impact on performance and profitability.

Calves are most affected, as cattle develop immunity over time.

The main clinical signs associated with gutworm are scouring, reduced appetite and weight loss.

Older cattle can have reduced performance and productivity.

Lungworm causes coughing initially, but with damaged lung tissue you can get secondary bacterial infection leading to pneumonia and possibly death.

Warm wet weather, such as the soft days we have been experiencing recently, favours the development, survival and build up of eggs and larvae on the pasture.

The safest pasture is reseeding followed by aftergrass. Herd owners need to constantly monitor

their livestock for signs of coughing or diarrhoea.

There are many different strategies for managing lungworm and gutworm in cattle. Your strategy will depend on your particular farming practices.

Options include: n Dosing when symptoms arise n Strategically dose when moving to clean pasture n Use of one of the season-long lasting treatments n Periodically dosing throughout the grazing season n Monitor faecal samples regularly and dose accordingly.

Resistance to wormers is becoming more common in recent

years. This can arise as a result of too frequent use of a single product or underdosing.

There are three principal types of dosing in common use – oral white wormers, injectable ivermectins and pour-ons.

Oral white wormers are effective at the time but don’t have any residual effect.

The injectables and pour-ons generally last for 4-8 weeks depending on the product.

In general, pour on dosing is as effective as injectable, once the skin is dry and clean. Alternating use of products is advisable to avoid the development of resistance in the worm population.

Talk to your local vet for further advice – they are the best placed to give advice on what is most suitable for your own farm.

The tale of the White Cat of Castlecor There was a man called the Red Druid living in Castlecor, near Kanturk, long ago, and he had two beautiful daughters, Cliona and Aoibheall. The young, handsome chieftain of the O’Keeffe clan used to visit the Druid and, not surprisingly, both girls fell madly in love with him. Unfortunately for Cliona, the young man only had eyes for Aoibheall. Sibling rivalry and the painful pangs of unrequited love drove Cliona to dark deeds. She consulted an old witch in the locality and they put a spell on Aoibheall that caused her to waste away.

When she was almost at the point of death Cliona approached her and said she would cure her if she rejected the young chieftain’s advances. Aoibheall refused and in a fit of fury Cliona struck her with a magic wand and turned her into a beautiful white cat.

O’Keeffe was enraged, but nothing could be done because the white cat was missing, the magic wand was lost and the old witch was dead. He banished Cliona to Carrigcleena, in Kilshannig, where she resides to this day as Queen of the Sí and goddess of love and beauty. At that stage they had several children, so

Cliona is also the otherworld mother of the O’Keeffe Clan.

She is often seen at dusk leading a faery host in a merry dance. She still has an eye for the boys, and any unwary young fellow who strays around ‘The Rock’ at night will be lured into her subterranean boudoir, never to be seen again.

As for her enchanted sister Aoibheall, the white cat, she took up residence in a hidden cave in Castlecor, where she guards a hoard of gold and jewels and all kinds of treasure. According to local lore, for about a week at mid-summer every year, she regains her human form as a beautiful young woman of twenty.

They also say that she will be released from the spell if she meets a man who loves her for herself and not for her riches.

Holy wells: St Laitiaran’s Well St. Laiiaran is a revered figure shrouded in folklore and is connected with the pre-Chrisian fesival of Lughnasa which celebrates the start of the Harvest. This well is sister well to St. Lassar’s Well in Killasseragh and Inghne Bhuidhe in Dromtariffe. She is said to have come from England with her three sisters and setled in Cullen.

The Legend Of St. Laiiaran: Laiiaran, the youngest of the three sister saints, went every morning to the local blackSt Laitiaran’s Well, in Cullen village smith’s forge for the ‘seed’ for her fire.

She carried this seed (red hot coals) in never be heard again in Cullen and her apron from the forge to her cell cursed the unfortunate blacksmith. Hedgerow recipes: Bilberry The bilberry (fraochan) is smaller than a blueberry but it has a fuller taste. Bilberries are darker in colour than blueberries, almost black with a slight shade of purple.

While the blueberry's fruit pulp is light green, the bilberry's is red or purple and heavily staining.

The fruit can be eaten raw or cooked and incorporated into a wide variety of tarts, desserts, preserves and drinks and used to flavour spirits. They are most often preserved by drying, or with sugar.

Bilberries were traditionally gathered on the last Sunday of July or the first Sunday of August and Domhnach na bhFraochog, Fraochan Sunday, was considered a day of great festivity when people danced, sang and played games in the wild places.

WILD BILBERRY AND BANANA MUFFINS Ingredients 150g plain flour n ½ tbsp baking powder n ¼ tbsp salt n 1 medium egg n 125ml milk n 50g unsalted butter, melted n 50g dried bilberries n 50g white chocolate chopped n 1 small banana (mashed) n

Method In a bowl, sieve the flour, salt, baking powder together. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, sugar, milk and melted butter together. Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Don’t mix it too much, it should look a little

lumpy. Now add the bilberries, chocolate and banana, don’t over mix. Spoon the mixture into muffin cases and bake at 200 degrees C for 15-20 minutes.

Tribute to Séamus Sexton The late, great road bowling legend Séamus Sexton of Nadd is another prime example of our Duhallow Sporting Greats. Having recently agreed to complete our Q&A, we are saddened that we won’t get to feature Séamus with his unique answers to our questions, following his untimely passing this month.

Séamus competed at the highest level of road bowling for 37 years from 1971 to 2008, winning All-Ireland titles at both ends of his outstanding career and many other titles in-between.

Séamus Sexton will be forever remembered for his incredible sporting achievements:

The atmosphere, training and friendships made at Rylane Boxing Club carried me upwards and onwards through all the years that followed.

3. What is your greatest strength?

Perseverance, a never giving up attitude to keep on training, I put my all into any sport that I’ve played.

4. What is your greatest sporting achievement?

I won three All-Ireland titles in the one year. Football, running and boxing. Secondly, the back to back senior boxing titles that I won.

5. What is your greatest personal achievement?

When competing in different sports I turned my attention to coaching at different levels from under age to senior level in football, hurling, boxing and camogie.

6. What was the greatest challenge you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

When I was training as an electrician and fitting in training at sport all at the same time, so time was my biggest challenge at that stage of my life. Also, losing five senior All-Ireland boxing finals before I won two back to back.

7. Who supported you the most in your career?

8. What advice would you give to young sportspeople just starting out?

What you will get out of anything in life, sports included, is only what you put in! So train hard and never give up trying. Stay healthy and most of all enjoy whatever sport you choose to play.

I work as an electrician, I’m a bit of a workaholic really but my family always come first in my life. I love all kinds of sports, whether I am participating or watching.

10. What are your goals going forward?

To carry on coaching kids, young people and adults in many sports.

But my main love is boxing. To get a person through to an All-Ireland final and hopefully winning it well, that is my goal in life going forward.
