Not all those weeds are bad There is always room for some weeds in our gardens – biodiversity depends on them

So we’ve had the sunshine and now we’ve had the rain, and that means one thing – weeds!

One of the benefits of a prolonged dry spell is the very slow growth of weeds. We are afforded the luxury of deciding which parts of the soil to water, benefiting our chosen plants and not the competitive weeds.

However, usual service has resumed which means high volume indiscriminate watering from the sky soaking plants and weeds alike.

Don’t get me wrong, we needed some rain, the soil has been very dry, and prolonged drought affects the growth of all plants and it has come at a perfect time for potatoes and onions. So how to deal with the lush growth of weeds springing up in flowerbeds, vegetable beds, pathways and lawns?

The first step is to stand back and look at your weeds in a different way. Weeds are wild plants, some have beautiful flowers and attract pollinators to your garden, such as dandelions, woundwort, figwort, clovers and stitchworts.

Others provide homes and food to insects some of which are important

predatory insects, ready to help you in your ongoing battle with plant eating pests. Stinging nettles are the food plant for several of our most loved butterflies, including the tortoiseshells, peacock and red admiral. There is always room for weeds in our gardens, biodiversity depends on them.

However beautiful and important weeds can be, we do have to remove them to reduce competition with our chosen plants whether these are food crops or ornamental.

This is where the second consideration comes into play. Weeds are a valuable resource, each one of those plants has taken nutrients from the soil, which when it naturally dies back will be returned to the soil to feed it for the next season’s growth. Every time we remove weeds from the soil we are removing valuable nutrients.

No serious gardener will let those nutrients go to waste, so those weeds will go straight into the compost bin to rot down into beautiful nutritious soil conditioning compost.

compost, made from the weeds and grass clippings from all of the different gardens. (Composting does take some practice however, maybe a topic for a future article.)

The third step is to ditch the weed killer completely and forever. No good can ever come from poisoning the plants, soil and waterways in our environment. All weed killers do is create a nasty, brown, dying landscape for a brief time; weeds always return – not the diverse array of grass species, ferns and wildflowers that were present before, but tough, invasive weeds that survive the poison such as dock and horsetail.

Roadside verges that need maintaining for visibility can be strimmed, this takes no longer than spraying and looks so much better. Paths and drives can be treated with a flame weeder. This will kill the weeds coming through concrete, gravel etc which can be hard to weed out, but will not damage the environment in the process.

Remember, one person’s weed is another person’s wildflower, it is all a matter of perspective. Learn to love your weeds!

Strictly Kilshannig Millstreet in the frame seeking donations Kilshannig GAA’s ‘Strictly Kilshannig’ group is asking the community to make donations towards winter hampers for the elderly.

A spokesperson explained: “We are 21 weeks away from the first week in December and we were thinking, why not give something back to our wonderful elderly and those in need in the parish that have been cocooning for the past number of weeks. We would love if we could get as many people as possible involved in this.”

Kilshannig GAA hopes to give a hamper to as many elderly and needy people as possible.

“We have a list of essential items and if every week you put one extra item in your shopping, place it in a box and have a hamper ready for the first week in December, think of the joy it would bring. Some examples include tinned beans and peas, teabags, coffee, sugar, cereals, porridge, jelly, soup, tinned peaches, pears or fruit cocktail, salt, pepper, red sauce, brown sauce, jam, marmalade, biscuits...”

A look back in time

Derrygallon memories (Final part in a 3-part feature)

By Br Malachy Buckley The beagles: At home and in school we were accustomed to hearing the baying of the beagles.

They were sturdy, colourful dogs used in the fox chase. Patty, a local farmer, was the manager. When animals died in the locality, if meat was needed, they were taken to the kennels. In summertime the beagles were released. They were free to roam the countryside. Apparently they were not interested in fowls or other farm animals. We often had a free view of them chasing hares.

The hare would first appear with the signs of fear. The beagles could be heard and later seen following the scent. We never witnessed a kill, but the sounds and the scene are vivid memories. In the evenings they returned to their kennels to feed. When the hunting fraternity gathered for the meet at Derrygallon Cross it was a sight and a wonder beyond description. We were accustomed to farm horses, tack and a saddle. Now we saw sleek horses with bridles, leather reins and glossy saddles. Mounted on them were people with special caps, red coats, grey trousers and shiny gaiters. They were like people from a different planet. The bugle sounded, the beagles were shepherded in the right direction and the spectacle got moving. There was an understanding with the farmers. The cattle were housed at that time of year. The dogs and horses ran through fields, over ditches and fences in pursuit of the elusive fox. With no experience

Br Malachy Buckley, of Farrendoyle, Kanturk, was a De La Salle teaching brother until his retirement of television or cinema, this was the greatest spectacle on earth. We were beyond ourselves with the joy and wonder.

Greyhounds: Many people around Derrygallon kept greyhounds. In wintertime the owners brought their dogs to a gathering place on Sunday afternoons, lots of neighbours would come along to witness the fun.

The hounds were put in pairs with a starter. Beaters had gone ahead to spot the hares. When the hare got moving the pair of dogs were released. There was tremendous excitement while waiting to see which dog was nearer for the first turn. There was relief when the hare reached the safety of the bushes. The dogs then came to an abrupt standstill.

It was a neighbourly, get-together for some harmless recreation.

Mike’s Greyhounds: Local man Mike Vaughan’s dogs were a class apart. They won cups year after year at big and small coursing

events. The pupils in school spoke about dogs like the modern generation talk about ball games. His son Dinny was up at the crack of dawn walking hounds up and down a steep hill in the valley. We saw him from the window and wondered where he got all the energy. Finally, he would put the two dogs sitting at the foot of the hill. They were trained to wait. Then he would rush to the far end of the long field and blow a shrill whistle with his fingers in his mouth. The dogs raced like chain lightening to reach him. He would then rub their muscles and lead them home for breakfast and a rest.

Mike was a renowned dog man and his were a safe bet.

Horses: Clongeel stud was within view of the schoolyard. It was the talk of the country when Clare’s Dust won the Irish Grand National in the late Thirties. There was much excitement whenever the locals gathered, whether at the chapel gate, creamery queues, the local shop or the school yard. The pupils didn’t really understand what the win meant. Ignorance did not dampen their enthusiasm. We regarded Clare’s Dust as our hero. Many is the time we stood in the same field and marvelled at this wonder horse. Farmers generally kept two horses. One would be a breeding mare. These were serviced at Clongeel Stud.

Famous Names: Local man Dr Pat O’Callaghan, Olympic champion hammer thrower, was known to all; footballers Dick Harnedy and Niall Murphy – who played for Cork and were the only Corkmen selected to play for Munster in the Railway Cup – were our heroes. It was the home of sport of every sort, was Derrygallon Cross.

Crossing the Line is a new podcast which would interest any GAA supporter in and around the Duhallow division.

Just like a radio interview, these chats are sure to invoke memories of classic games and players from decades past.

Timmie Murphy (Lyre), David Quinlan (Newmarket) and Robert Stack (Newmarket) came up with the idea a few months back and put out some feelers as to whether this was going to be something people would have an appetite for and following on from some very positive feedback, it was decided to trial it.

After a very successful first episode it was decided to release a series. The series will last for 10 episodes initially and it is hoped that Crossing the Line is something that can continue into the future at different times of the year.

The podcast involves Robert Stack interviewing a retired GAA player from the Barony of Duhallow each Sunday. In the chat, they revisit the career of a former great from a different club every week. They discuss the player’s career, look at their achievements and their club’s fortunes before running through a series of questions where the guest recalls their biggest highlight, their biggest regret and much more.

The guest picks the six best players they played with from their time on the GAA fields around the division and county and remembers great coaches, teammates and influences on their time as a player.

The gift of ability

By JACINTA CARROLL IRD Duhallow’s Ability Programme aims to support young people with disabilities (15-29 years of age) to improve their employability through a range of person-centered supports. The programme helps young people to access training, work placement and to participate in community life.

The Ability Programme enhances learning through practical activities that support them to transfer skills to home life and the local community as well as helping to build social and communication skills.

By March the participants were half way through their yearlong cycle when their weekly training sessions had to be postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions. Covid-19 has played havoc with our everyday lives and routines and for many has resulted in increased stress, anxiety, uncertainty and isolation.

Regular contact was maintained with each of the participants and their families. In order to support participants through this difficult and uncertain time, training packs were developed, tailored to each individual’s specific needs and sent to each participant on a regular basis. These packs included resources in the areas of personal development, career development, cookery, health & wellbeing and fitness. In order to further support the participants, it was decided that technology would be utilised to bridge the gaps brought about by social distancing and Covid-19 restrictions. Training through the programme has been moved online with individuals now participating in two weekly online sessions.

These online sessions delivered through Zoom have allowed us to continue the delivery of a range of

Cookery is just one of the many modules offered by the Ability Programme training courses adapted to the iparticipants’ specific needs; the programme aims to help each of the young people to become as independent as possible. Zoom has also allowed us to engage with participants and check in on a weekly basis. Parents have commented on how much these weekly supports have helped the young people and how it has now become the highlight of their week.

A broad range of courses have been delivered online including: n Social & Personal Development, which involved modules such as confidence-building, community involvement, assertiveness, relationship building, personal care and hygiene and goal setting; n Health & Wellbeing; n Career Preparation Programme; n Boxercise sessions.

who would like to be in a paying job, we can help you to achieve your goals. Modules include: Social & Personal Development, Career Preparation (including work placement, CV & Interview Skills, role play etc), Practical Life Skills (including cookery, laundry, money management etc.), Art & Craft Therapy, Computer Essentials and Sports Workshops.

Participants must be engaging with a disability service or in receipt of a Disability Allowance for more than three months. Participation is free and will not impact on your social welfare payment.

Childcare staff get training IRD Duhallow Skillnet joined forces with three other Skillnet Networks and *Skillnet Ireland ReBound initiative, to provide a highly innovative training programme for the childcare sector in Ireland.

This training programme provides free training for owners, managers and staff of early years and school age childcare services, to address the measures needed to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the workplace and supports the safe and sustainable re-opening of early years and school-age services in Ireland by providing free training for all providers nationwide.

This ‘Back to Work Safely’ training programme is the first online training platform for 3,500 childcare services nationwide, covering two vital areas:

Online Covid-19 Compliance Programme to maintain and develop skills of existing staff and support the induction of new staff (including Critical Staff Training, Management Response Training, Responding to a Changing Environment etc).

The training programme was officially launched on Monday, June 22nd, 2020. By Monday July 29th, 75 per cent of the participants had succeeded in completing the full training right on time for Phase 3 ‘Business Back to Work’ under the current five-phase roadmap. n

LOCATION: The Island Wood is located 3km outside Newmarket ฀ town. From the ฀ along the town฀ proceed Island road out of Newmarket, passing the church on your left hand side. Continue on this road for 2.3km until you see a small slip road to your right. Take this slip road and you will reach the forestry gate with the entrance to the Island wood on your right.

The car park acts as a starting point for the various trails, including looped walks around Liscongill Wood alongside the River Dalua.

TRAILHEAD: The Trailhead is located at the entrance to the wood at the forestry gate.

There is room for 6-10 cars.

Nearest services (shops, toilets, restaurants etc) are available in Newmarket town.

The Island Wood near Newmarket is ฀ ฀ ฀ a beautiful wooded, landscaped ฀ ฀ area, perfect for a walk or ฀a picnic.

An interesting feature in฀ the ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀‘Twelve ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ wood is the ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ ฀ Apostles’ tree –฀ ฀ pictured inset – so called because of the 12 trunks extending out from the ฀main฀ trunk.

The River Dalua flows through the wood and can be seen from various different points on the trails.

Ravens, dippers and all the native woodland birds live here as well as native red squirrels.

You can also glimpse brown trout in the River Dalua which flows through the wood.

The walks were established by IRD Duhallow with assistance from the EU LEADER Programme, with the co-operation of the people of Duhallow, COILLTE, Fáilte Ireland, and the Rural Social Scheme.

LOOP DESCRIPTION: The Island Wood also known as Coill an Oileann is named after a townland of the same name. This name may have its origins in the fact that the townland of Island lies between the River Dalua and one of its tributaries, the Rampart Stream. The wood was originally part of the Newmarket Court, which was owned by the Aldworth family.

The Rounds: The 1st of May (May Day) is sill the tradiional day when people visit An Cathair Cubh Dearg where mass is celebrated and people ‘pay’ the rounds. The manner in which people do the rounds is a complex ritual, with prayers and rosaries said while walking around the site.

Hedgerow recipes: Purslane Purslane (Puirsleán) is a succulent plant whose edible leaves are crunchy and have a tangy lemon and peppery flavour.

This nutritious weed has a distinctive thick, reddish stem and succulent, green leaves. It can be foraged from early June until the end of the summer.

Leaves are spoon-like in shape and are succulent (fleshy) Purslane is a very nutritional leaf, containing large amounts of minerals – notably calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, B, C and antioxidants.

Purslane is mostly eaten raw but can also be cooked. As a trailing plant, it grows very close to the earth so it needs to be rinsed well in fresh water several times with a bit of vinegar.

PURSLANE SALAD WITH LEMON AND OLIVE OIL DRESSING Ingredients 950g purslane leaves (rinsed) n 1 red onion peeled and finely diced n 1 tomato finely diced n The juice of 1 lemon n 4 or 5 tbsps olive oil n ½ tsp salt Method Place the lemon juice, oil and salt in a jar, close the lid and shake well. Adjust the seasoning to taste.

Make sure the purslane has been patted dry then add the diced onion and tomato and with your hands mix everything together.

Add the dressing and ensure all the leaves, onions and tomato are n

coated. This can be served on its own with some rustic bread. It also makes a great accompaniment to grilled fish, meat or cheese.

Doing pesticides right Pesticides is a generic word used to describe two groups of products, Plant Protection Products or PPPs used on crops, and Biocides Products for non-crop use.

Biocides are substances used to control non-agricultural pests including insects, bacteria and fungi.

They include dairy detergents, sanitisers and disinfectants along with rodenticides. Typical crop PPPs would include a herbicide such as MCPA for rush control.

Plant protection products cannot be made available on the market unless they are licensed and authorised for use under European Union Regulation 1107/2009/EC. An example of such licencing would be the use of MCPA in a boom sprayer only and not licensed for use in a knapsack sprayer. The primary aim of the regulation is to establish a high level of protection for humans, animals and the environment.

The regulation also provides reassurances for the wider general public that PPPs are applied safely and in the least possible amount.

Products listed as PPP’s include fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, plant growth regulators, seed dressings, molluscides and fumigants.

All products must be registered by the Pesticide Control Division (PCD) and are subsequently given a registration number, Biocidal Product Authorisation No (IE/BPA No) or Pesticide Control Service Product number (PCS No). All PPPs must be used in accordance with conditions specified on the product label, with the principles of good plant protection practice, and in accordance with the principles of integrated control.

The principles of Good Plant Protection Practices include optimal practice in the use of PPPs, choice of active substance, dosage rate, number of applications to be used, optimum timing of the application, frequency of application, and the objective of minimising residue risk.

The use of the PPP is limited to the minimum necessary to keep harmful

The control of pesticide use in agriculture is regulated through cross compliance by the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine through Statutory Management Requirements number 10 (SMR 10).

Requirements which must be adhered to under SMR 10 include using only authorised or registered PPPs and biocidal products. All products must be used in accordance with the principles of Good Plant Protection Practice and integrated control.

It is also a requirement under SMR 10 to store, handle and use properly as per the instructions on approved product labels. All equipment used for the application of PPPs must be suitable and calibrated properly.

There are several requirements for the adequate storage of PPPs including a dedicated lockable storage room or container which is bunded and free from leaks with a warning or caution sign on the external door. A recognised method to contain spillages such as a sand bucket must also be available in the store. Records of PPPs usage must be kept updated on farm holdings,

including all records of product purchases, applications, disposals and returns. The record of application of PPPs also includes any products used by a contractor on the holding.

Product applications annual records must include crop, area treated, brand name used, product registration number, quantity applied, date of application and reason for application.

As part of a Department of Agriculture inspection for SMR 10 the storage, handling and records of PPPs usage are assessed. The inspector looks for a dedicated storage facility/area, a bunded store and warning sign, a facility for containing spills, protective equipment/clothing for handling PPPs and finally that the powders are stored above liquids to avoid contamination and that products are in their original containers. The inspector requests from the herd owner/keeper his or her professional user number (PU). The application equipment is assessed to confirm that it is calibrated adequately.

A determination is made as to whether the pesticide sprayer was filled from a stream or if prescribed buffer zones on the PPP label were adhered to. Application records for the previous 12 months are inspected to assess compliance with maximum rates of application and status of products used.

Finally, it must be noted that there have been multiple exceedances of the legal limit for MCPA pesticide products in drinking water sources.

This product is widely used for rush control on marginal land. The drinking water standard for individual pesticides is 0.1 microgram/L. One foil seal from an MCPA pesticide product is enough to breach the required standard for 30 kilometres of a stream. The Drinking Water Compliance Monitoring Results 2015 for public water supplies detected 65 individual pesticides in 45 water supplies with MCPA products accounting for 41 of these failures.

STAY SAFE ON COUNTRY WALKS As the sun shines and pretty much the only recreational activity left available to us during covid is exploring the great outdoors, we must remember to remain respectful of the rural areas and those who live and work in these areas (four legged or otherwise).

If you are on a way marked path with signs, great – thank you for being respectful to the farmers who work rural land by staying in the appointed places – it is for the safety of everyone. Remember to keep an eye out for the animals that might be around you.

Don’t enter a field with a bull in it and never get yourself between a cow and her calf. The herd protection or mothering instincts will kick in respectively and you will be the enemy. Clever creatures they are.

Keep dogs on leads when you are anywhere near livestock – you might think that your dog is well behaved and won’t chase sheep, but believe me when instinct kicks in, even the most precious, well behaved bichon will give it a try. A farmer is within his rights to shoot a dog worrying sheep to keep his stock safe. Clip the lead securely on and keep it there for the duration of the walk!

I shouldn’t have to say this by now, but it is vital that you pick up your dog’s poo. Refusing to stoop

for the poop is very inconsiderate to the next walker, in addition to being a threat to human health through spreading of worm eggs (Toxacara canis), unless your dog has been wormed every three months on the button for its entire life. If you’re worried about the plastic use, then use compostable bags. And when you do scoop the poop, be sure to take the bag home with you!

A final word – it is crucial that you check your dog for ticks after walks and either bring them to the vet for removal, or purchase a ‘tick twister’ to remove them at home. Better still, arrange regular tick prevention treatments so any ticks that do bite your pet will fall off and die within 12 hours, vastly reducing the chance of disease. Contact your vet to discuss which product would be best for your pet.

The new normal in my hair salon On the 19th of March I made the decision to close my hair salon, Katelynn’s Hair Design in Rathmore, County Kerry. The following week the total lockdown was announced.

I then began thinking of how I could improve my salon’s safety features when returning to work. I am lucky to have quite a big space and I work alone so just a few improvements were needed.

Sapphire Signs, across the street from my salon in Rathmore village, were very helpful. They provided me with a large Perspex screen to place between my styling sections and a smaller adjustable screen to place over my wash basin. They also provided me with a face shield, safety signage and floor markings.

area as going forward I will be asking clients to wait in their cars outside the salon. I set up a sanitising station just inside the front door which includes hand sanitiser, disinfectant spray and paper towels.

The salon reopened on June 29th and it was fantastic. During the lockdown I had started a waiting list for clients looking for an appointment when the salon reopened. As soon as we got an official reopening date I began contacting these clients and scheduling their appointments. This meant that before the salon doors reopened I was already booked up for the first few weeks of July.

Going forward, clients must ring when they arrive and wait in their

car until being called in. Between every client I disinfect all surfaces, there are no longer magazines or tea or coffee provided. Clients are asked to wear a disposable mask for the duration of their service and I wear my face shield. All clients have to complete a contact tracing form.

I have just completed my first week back to work and it has been wonderful catching up with everyone. I have worked extra days and hours to try to accommodate as many people as possible. Everyone adhered to the new safety guidelines and I have to say I myself felt very safe wearing my face shield.

An unforgettable year

By ANDY O’CONNOR 1990 was an unforgettable year for Gaelic games not only in Cork, but here in Duhallow as well, as our divisional senior footballers bridged a gap of 54 years with a historic two point triumph over city rivals St Finbarrs 8 points to 6 points in the Cork county championship final at Cork GAA headquarters, Pairc Ui Chaoimh, on Sunday afternoon November 4th.

Finalists in 1982 and 1988, Duhallow opened their 1990 campaign with 2 goals, 18 points to 1 goal, 6 points victory over Carrigdhoun, followed up with a 2 goals, 11 points to 1 goal, 5 points triumph over O’Donnovan Rossa.

Mighty Nemo Rangers provided stiff opposition in the semi final, but it was Duhallow’s day 4 goals, 5 points to 1 goal, 9 points with goals from Anthony Barry, Timmy Healy and the Dennehy brothers, Jimmy and Richard.

The final on a cool afternoon against St Finbarrs brought a roaring crowd of 10,979 to Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

The city boys sailed into a 3 point lead early in the opening half. But a tremendous save by goalie Jerry Pat O’Leary helped settle down Duhallow. With Danny Cullotty and Jerome Walsh showing the way in midfield, Duhallow shaded the first half of this dour encounter 4 points to 3 points. With the help of Paddy Hayes, St Finbarrs came back into the contest in the second half. But another crucial save made sure this was Duhallows day of destiny And when Referee Joe O’Leary blew full time, the famous Andy Scannell Trophy was on its way to the Barony on a scoreline of 8 points to 6 points.

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A 1. What/who inspired you to become a sportsperson in your field?

My mother (Janet Burke) is the owner of Valley View Equestrian Centre in Gooseberry Hill near Newmarket. She opened the riding school in May 1995. My father (Alex Ott) was also a great horseman, but was forced to give up his job following a fall from a horse in November 2014 which resulted in serious spinal injury. Before his accident he was one of the best around at breaking, schooling and producing young horses. My brothers – Andy (16) and Luke (14) – are beginning to do similar work under his guidance. I got my first event pony (Aille Fountain Breeze) when I was 10 and I started eventing him a year later in 2014. My late grandfather (Jörg Ott) competed at international level for Germany. He qualified for the Olympics, but sadly his horse got injured shortly before the competition. My grandmother (Dagmar Ott) also competed in eventing competitions in her youth and still rides to this day.

2. What is your greatest sporting achievement?

In 2018 I was placed second in the Berney Bros Saddlery CCI1* (Ponies) competition at Tattersalls International Horse Trials partnered with Aille Fountain Breeze. It was a strong class of 27 enteries and I reckoned that I would be lucky to finish in the top 10, so to stand on the podium at one of the most prestigious events in Europe felt out of this world. Even though it was the week before my Junior Cert, I still managed to walk out of the exams with seven As, a Higher Merit and one B. 3. What is your greatest personal achievement?

Zara's sport is eventing (horse trials). In 2018, she placed second in the Berney Bros Saddlery CCI1* (Ponies) competition at Tattersalls International Horse Trials, partnered with Aille Fountain Breeze. Zara is on Eventing Ireland’s Junior High performance squad. Eventing is an equestrian sport where a horse me a four-year-old pony and I had to put in the hard work myself to climb up the ranks. I am grateful for it as it has made me the rider I am today. I have also achieved a lot with my current horse (Gooseberry Hill Cruise). She is home bred and home produced.

In just two years of compteting (2018 and 2019) with her to date, I have been fortunate enough to have already brought her to international level.

4. What was the greatest challenge you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

The piles and piles of homework, especially during Senior Cycle, made it extremely difficult to find sufficient time to keep both myself and the horses/ponies fit for competition. My mother was a great help to me, exercising the animals on the days when it wasn't possible for me.

5. Who supported you the most in your career?

My mother is also my trainer, my driver and my groom. She has had to be nearly as dedicated as me; waking up before dawn every Sunday morning during the eventing season from March to October to drive me up and down the length of the country. I don't thank her enough for it. My little sister Ella (11) has also been a great supporter. She's very funny and is great to lighten the mood when things get stressful.

6. What advice would you give to riders just starting out?

Believe in yourself! No matter how many times someone tells you that you can't do it or you won't make it, never give up. ‘If your dreams don't scare you, they're not BIG enough!’

7. What do you do outside of your sport?

Any time I wasn't studying I was riding or doing something with the horses in the yard. Since the lockdown, I have enjoyed spending more time with Ella.

8. What are your goals going forward?

My ultimate goal is to compete at the Olympics. It would be a dream come true to ride in an Olympic arena wearing a coveted green jacket, sporting the tricolour on my breast pocket.
