Remembering Willie Neenan Every year, on the last Friday in June, Millstreet Athletic Club hosts the Willie Neenan 5-Mile Road Race in memory of the inspirational athlete for whom it is named. Unfortunately, the event has had to be cancelled

TRIBUTE TO WILLIE NEENAN

By DENISE NEENAN Millstreet Athletic Club hold their annual Willie Neenan Memorial 5-Mile Road Race on the last Friday in June each year.

Unfortunately, this year’s event had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The 5-Mile race starts in Millstreet town and the route takes you around 'The Glebe’ to finish again in Millstreet town.

This is a beautiful route to run and was one of Willie’s favourite runs, which he often ran daily.

Both runners and walkers are welcome to take part in this scenic route and it is always supported superbly by the locals. The race attracts some of the top runners in Cork and Kerry and the competitiveness and attendance is greater each year.

The event itself brings back many a good memory to the Neenan family and the wide variety of friends and running colleagues Willie had. Willie was a prominent figure running the roads around Millstreet. For more than 60 years he engaged in competitive athletics.

In 1951 Willie took up running and he easily began to win events, gaining his first Munster title in 1953. In this difficult era, running became more popular and more runners joined Willie and Millstreet AC was formed and steadily grew a reputation. They travelled near and far for races, often returning with many prizes.

As an FCA member, Willie added a win of the Mile at the Southern Command and All Army Championships.

Willie won more and more races, winning medals with Millstreet and Cork at Novice, Junior and Senior Cross Country, while adding County, Munster and All-Ireland medals to his growing collection.

In the 1960s, he captured the accolade of ‘Best Athlete’ within the country.

Willie continued to clock up the winnings and achieved County, Provincial and National titles in both track and cross country events.

Willie was a legendary sportsman known far and wide.

He played a pivotal role in the promotion of Millstreet sports and he devoted many hours to athletics where he touched the hearts of so many people in the sport. MHDSRIP.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS SPANNING DECADES  1982 Dublin City Marathon – indoors race in a time of 4 min time of 5 mins 08.87 secs.  Willie was the first winner 44.86 seconds 2 hours 38 minutes – aged 49   1983 World Championships, 1998 – broke the Irish record in an Irish singlet of the Puerto Rico, 2nd place missing out on outright Gold by just half a second in the Over 50’s 1500m – pipped at the post!

Interests

Hedgerow recipes: Elderflower Elder/Elderberry (Trom): Elder is a shrub-like tree that has 5-7 finely toothed, soft, green leaves. In spring it has white blossoms. In late summer these turn into reddish clusters of small berries which as they ripen will turn purple/black that are normally ready for picking in September.

Elderflower is used for swollen sinuses (sinusitis), colds, influenza (flu), swine flu, bronchitis, diabetes, and constipation. It is also used to increase urine production (as a diuretic), to increase sweating (as a diaphoretic), and to stop bleeding.

Elderflower is also used as a gargle and mouthwash for coughs, colds, hoarseness (laryngitis), flu, and shortness of breath. It is used on the skin to alleviate joint pain (rheumatism), and pain and swelling (inflammation).

ELDERFLOWER CORDIAL Ingredients 25 elderflower heads de-stalked n 3 large lemons thinly sliced n 1 ½ litres of boiling water n 1.4kg sugar n

Method Put the elderflowers and lemons in a plastic or stainless steel container. In another pan pour the boiling water over the sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Leave the mixture to go lukewarm and pour over the elderflowers and lemons. Leave this to stand for 48 hours, stirring occasionally. Next, strain the mixture through some muslin or a fine sieve. Decant the liquid into sterilised bottles. One way of serving this is to dilute the cordial with sparkling water and

add a slice or lemon or some mint.

It can also be added to some cloudy lemonade to make a very refreshing elderflower fizz.

Holy wells: Tobair na Faithni St John’s Well, otherwise known as ‘Tobair na Faithni’, is one of the most renowned wells in the region. Folklore on who St John of Mushera actually was varies but it is said that St John setled in the Muskerry hills and legend has it that he had three sisters, also saints, who themselves were honoured at quarterly periods associated with feasts of the pagan Irish year. The three sisters – known as Lasair, Inghne Bhuidhe and Laiaran – appear to have been imbued by tradiion with qualiies previously atributed to pre-Chrisian goddesses.

Cure: St John’s Well, like many other holy wells, has a reputaion for providing cures for certain ailments.

In the case of St John’s Well the cure is for warts, hence the name ‘Tobair na Faithni’. Reports have been passed down through local history of numerous people whose warts literally just disappeared as a result of paying ‘a round’ at St John’s

Rounds: Tradiionally, the faithful congregate at St Johns Well on June 24th, also known as Midsummer’s Day and the feast of the naivity of St John the Bapist. Down through the ages it has been a big occasion on the

mountainside. Up to 1940, St John’s Day had a fesival or patern which consisted of tents set up a mile and a half from the well on the Macroom side selling a variety of products. Occasions for celebraions at that ime were few and far between. Over the years the crowds got smaller at the patern unil eventually it was no longer held but mass and rounds are sill held annually.

The ‘paying’ of the rounds consists of Seven Our Fathers, seven Hail Mary’s, seven Gloria’s while kneeling in front of the well, a decade of the Rosary as the well is being circled – this must be repeated three imes – and in conclusion the Rosary is completed in front of the well.

Direcions: St John’s Well is on the north slopes of Mushera Mountain, the highest of the Boggeragh range, approximately 8km from Millstreet and five miles from Macroom. Access can be gained by leaving Millstreet and taking the L1123 signposted Rylane.

Remote cookery programme PART 3/3 OMELETTE

The Community Food Initiative aims to positively influence the eating habits of families with children by focusing on the skills and knowledge around food and

healthy eating, healthier shopping and enhanced cooking skills. IRD Duhallow is delivering a six-week Remote Cookery Programme to families in the Duhallow region.

FISH FINGERS Ingredients: 500g of cod, cut into 1 inch strips n 50g of plain flour n Salt and pepper n 80g of breadcrumbs n 80g of oats n 2 eggs n 10ml oil n

Ingredients: n n n n n

4 eggs 1 dash of oil Pinch of salt and pepper 1 small onion, finely chopped 20ml water or low fat milk

Method: 1. Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry half the onion gently until it is soft 2. Beat two eggs in a bowl, add the water or milk, salt and pepper and pour into the pan over the onion 3. Spread the mixture around the frying pan and cook until the eggs are set and come away from the edge of the frying pan 4. Turn the omelette to cook the other side 5. Repeat the process with the other half of the onion and the other 2 eggs for a second omelette. g Serving suggestions: you could add mushrooms, spring onion, tomatoes, peppers, shredded ham, rashers or grated cheese. The children can help with frying the onion, cracking and beating the eggs and pouring the mixture in to the pan.

Set up 3 bowls – first bowl with flour and a little salt and pepper, the second with the eggs beaten and the third with the breadcrumbs and oats combined 3. Chop the fish into thumb sized strips 4. Dip the fish into the flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs and oats 5. Spread the oil over the baking tray, lay the fish fingers on the tray and cook in the oven for 15-20 minutes turning over half way through. g To get the children involved, they can easily help with dipping the fish fingers.

SPICY POTATO WEDGES Ingredients: 8 medium sized potatoes n 20ml of oil n 2 teaspoons of cayenne pepper n Black pepper n

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees/ gas mark 6 2. Wash and cut the potatoes into roughly 8 wedges (leave the skin on) 3. Place in a container, pour the vegetable oil and sprinkle the cayenne pepper and black pepper over them. Close the container and shake 4. Place wedges on the baking tray 5. Cook for 35 minutes or until golden brown turning half way through. g Serving suggestions: serve with natural yogurt, grated cheese and salsa. The children can easily help with adding the potatoes to the container and shaking.

Wash hands before, throughout and after.

Newmarket Afterschools awarded its 6th Green Flag Newmarket Afterschools has been involved in the Green-Schools programme since 2009. We are highly committed to making our afterschools an environmentally friendly place.

We have just been awarded our 6th Green Flag for Global Citizenship – Litter and Waste. The afterschools children worked very hard on this theme, conducting Litter and Waste Audits, learning about the 17 Sustainable Developmental Goals, carrying out Global Awareness Surveys and much more.

We also maintained and monitored the previous themes: Energy, Litter and Waste, Water, Travel and Biodiversity.

In Zoom calls you are more likely to be seen from the chest up so bring colour right up to the neckline, be it a bright coloured top, a summer dress or a piece of jewellery that will make you look confident and more productive The right lacy blouse will add a fresh and glamorous touch to your

tailored trousers/denim jeans, or under a jacket or cardigan, or with the latest faux leather culotte style trousers.

To cheer yourself up, logo T-shirts are very trendy, to be worn with peasant-style skirts and your favourite runners, sandals or high heels.

The floral printed midi dress that you can chuck in the wash: You’ll more than likely be sitting on the grass out in the garden, so loose styles in light breathable fabrics will keep you cool and comfortable. Look for details such as squared neckline, smocked bodice, wide straps or puffed sleeves. You can take it from day to night with the option to add your own belt in a timeless vintage style.

Denim dresses are difficult to wear if you have a bigger bust and avoid gaping buttons if you opt for a shirt dress.

Tighten the loops or ties so it’s snug around your face, without gaps.

By Br Malachy Buckley The postman: He was the most eagerly awaited friend cycling towards the cross. If you saw him at your house you expected good news that day, maybe a letter from America, better still a parcel of exotic clothes. The postman was generally affable and everybody’s friend. We youngsters didn’t know the significance of brown windowed envelopes, but we loved the postman.

The roadman: These were a rare species. The stonebreakers straddled the heap and pounded away all day. They always made time, in between strokes, to talk to us. The men with the horses and shovels filling in the potholes seemed to be from a different planet. We didn’t know any of them. Our knowing horizons were limited; since we only travelled to mass in Boherbue and the shops at the end of the bohereen and o ccasionally to Kanturk to the fair and confession. I think it was Charlie Horan that drove the milk lorry to Kanturk. He drove over the line road under the school daily at big lunch.

Occasionally, we deserted the football game to scud on the back of the lorry. It was a dangerous venture but youngsters tried to experience the thrill, ignoring the danger. I had a near accident once, which I haven’t forgotten.

The stage: The crossroads stage occupied a space in the football field below the wall opposite the Master’s door. It was still there when I went to school but with almost every household having a family to look after, there was little time for dressing up and celebrating.

When we arrived at the school after the holidays, the stage was gone and we had more space to kick the ball.

The schools: Derrygallon School, built in 1869, was an imposing building on a prominent site. It could be seen for miles around. It consisted of two large rooms, two built-ins coal turf-sheds

and spaces for hanging coats and caps. It had one double chimney in the centre with a small fireplace in each room. The pupils vied with each other in the mornings trying to get the fires blazing before the teachers arrived. Rather see a smile on their faces than a frown.

There were two sets of dry toilets at the rear of the school. The stonemasons, who constructed the encircling walls, were excellent craftsmen. The schools were segregated, divided more or less evenly with sixty pupils in each room. The junior teachers taught the infants, first, second and possibly third classes in each school. The head teachers took all the others up until eighth class.

Some students returned to school when the harvest was done to further their education. When we were in infants doing our marla work, we sat like mice listening to the master teaching and exploring the Irish Reader, ‘Jimín Mhaire Thaidhg’. No TV or radio programme has ever excited us more than Jimín.

When the head got noisy with the top classes, our teacher led us out into some sheltered corner of the yard if the weather was suitable. She obviously relished peace but we spent many cold periods out there.

A little church of ease: Derrygallon was at the very end of the parish.

The school was used for some practical ceremonies. We made our first confession regularly, getting help from the wiser ones about what sins we should confess. g To be concluded in the next issue of Discover Duhallow, out July 10th

PROTECT PETS FROM STORMS The recent change in the weather has brought a few thunder storms along with it. One of my own dogs, a leggy greyhound called Margot is a better weather forecaster than Met Eireann. When thunder is on the way, a good while beforehand she starts to pant and shake all over – signs of stress and fear; Margot really isn’t a huge fan of the rumbling in the atmosphere! My other dog, a tiny toothless ancient terrier called Sally, couldn’t care less, and merrily appears a bit confused about why her companion is so worked up over nothing. Dogs are all different, just like humans.

The first thing to do when thunder is on the way is to bring all pets securely into the house – we don’t want them getting scared, running off and becoming lost. If your pet is not microchipped, make sure you get them chipped ASAP by your vet,

Put on the TV or music a tad louder than usual to mask the rumbling noises. Anything relaxing will do!

Make sure they have somewhere cosy to hide. Let them find their own spot; keep an eye on them by all means, but don’t constantly disturb them.

Finally, pretend nothing strange is happening and try to act as normally as possible around your pet. Constantly comforting them when they appear frightened may be our natural reaction, but they can pick up on the change in our behaviour, and this can justify their fearful feelings in their minds. It leaves them thinking: ‘My human seems worried and stressed, so this rumbling definitely is something to be terrified of!’

Act relaxed, keep an eye on your pet, and the storm will pass.

Our attempt at self-sufficiency

By NATASHA HUMPHREYS I live with my husband and four children on a farm with sheep and cattle. Last year we decided to become more self-sufficient – we started making efforts to grow more fruit and vegetables.

We have a poly tunnel which is great, you have a longer growing season and can grow plants from seed. We grow loads of vegetables: potatoes, brassicas, corn, pumpkin, salads and more.

We also have most fruits: strawberries, apples, plums, blackcurrants, gooseberries, blueberries, grapes and tomatoes.

We have wanted to get hens for a long time so the whole family headed off to pick up a few birds – we came home with seven different breeds. We were very surprised when the first egg we got was blue! Thankfully we have the internet, it is a brilliant source of information. We found out one of our hens is an Easter Egger – they carry the blue egg laying gene from their parent stock, the Araucana or Ameraucana.

Sow and 11 piglets – including one stripy one since they are wild boar great craic to have a couple of ducks waddling around the garden so we got two Welsh Harlequins and two Khaki Campbell’s. Ducks love slugs and snails, they are a gardener’s friend, as long as they leave your peas and lettuce alone!

It feels like every day is Easter searching for eggs in the garden.

The goats are great fun – one of them is like Houdini, how she escapes is a mystery. Having fresh milk is great, we use it for drinking, pancakes and baking. We also learned to make goat’s cheese.

We decided to get two weaners to fatten over the summer. My husband and children went to pick up a couple of pigs and they came home with 10. We got nine wild boar pigs including a sow that gave birth to 11 piglets. The piglets were definitely a highlight, everyone wanted to see them, by far the children’s favourite animals. We also got a kunekune pig. The children called her Chunky, she wasn’t small. Kunekunes are a New Zealand breed, they have short snouts that discourage

The goats provide milk and cheese rooting, they are grazing pigs and eat grass.

If you are thinking of becoming a bit more self-sufficient, now is the time. Grow a few greens, keep a few hens, whatever you can manage. We are far from selfsufficient but we try to do what we can. It is an ongoing family project. I think the pandemic has made a lot of people stop and think about what is important in life. Maybe a few small changes in our lives can start to make a difference in the world.

Book review: The Words of Gandhi selected and introduced by Richard Attenborough In his introduction, Richard Attenborough states ,“I was knocked off my feet by Gandhi’s words – ‘It was always been a mystery to me how man can feel themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings’.”

He witnessed Indians forced to walk in the gutter so that white people could walk unimpeded along the sidewalk.

Gandhi’s ideas are as meaningful today as they were during his long and inspiring life. His beliefs, especially on violence and the atomic bomb, reveal his eloquent foresight on our contemporary world.

He said, “In India we have three million people who have to be

satisfied with one meal a day – it consists of chapati.”

He begs the question, “Have we the right to have the clothing and food we take for granted until those three million are fed?”

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A 1. What/who inspired you to become a sportsperson in your field?

Growing up in the motor trade in Millstreet there was a natural interest in cars. Then while attending University College Cork I drifted into rallying with a fellow student Dan O’Sullivan (Ballyvourney) through the Munster Car Club.

2. What was the moment that you knew you were on the right track?

I’m not sure I was ever on the right track. But my first win was the Circuit of Munster in 1968 by a narrow margin from Rosemary Smith who was very well known at the time, and as a result it got in the papers which was a little awkward as it during college exam time.

3. What is your greatest strength?

At 5’7” in height it certainly wasn’t my physique! I was gifted with good co-ordination, reflexes and eyesight which are vitally important for competition driving.

4. What is your greatest sporting achievement?

While it was good to win the British Championship in 1974 and getting a number of top six World Championship placings, the biggest thrill for me was winning our home event the Circuit of Ireland a number of times.

5. What is your greatest personal achievement?

To have recently arrived at 73 years old without any major injury in spite of a number of narrow escapes.

6. What was the greatest challenge you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

I suffered a serious bout of Brucellosis disease which was rampant in cattle herds in the 80s. Thanks to good medical care I recovered and was

Nicknamed ‘Millstreet Maestro’, Billy Coleman is Ireland's most

successful rally driver – in 20 years of rallying he has claimed a total of 29 victories, and has won British Rally Championship and Irish Tarmac Rally Championship titles.

Irish rally driver Billy Coleman won 29 races in his 20 year career fortunate to be able to return to driving after a lengthy spell.

7. Who supported you the most in your career?

My brother John, my late parents Peg and Paddy, and the great team of mechanics in Millstreet, many of whom shared my passion for driving.

8. What advice would you give to young drivers just starting out?

While I’ve largely lost touch with the rally scene I am aware that it has become a hugely expensive

pursuit. For a young person getting involved, remember you’ll have just as much fun, if not more, if competing at a basic level rather than getting drawn into the big stuff.

9. What are your goals going forward?

Nowadays I help out on our family farm where we have tillage and a few livestock. At this stage in life my main hope is to remain healthy and to have the good fortune to be able to work a few more years.
