Kiskeam lads burning the midnight oil

Players from 23 GAA clubs across Duhallow raised more than €35,000 for charity over a single weekend this month.

The fundraiser – which was organised by Kiskeam and Ballydesmond GAA clubs in aid of Irish Community Rapid

Response (ICRR) Rathcoole Air Ambulance, Millstreet and Kanturk Community Hospitals and the Burren Chernobyl Project – saw participants covering a total of 3,934.65km.

Pitch & Putt tees off again g

Newmarket Pitch and Putt were pleased to return to playing our sport on Monday 18th May last.

The aim during this Phase 1 of Ireland's roadmap for reopening is to ensure that it is played in a safe environment during this pandemic.

While out playing, it is imperative that social distancing and proper hand hygiene and cough etiquette are strictly observed.

We know that these restrictions are not going to last forever, and we also know that other opinions will abound, but we think these protocols allow for a safe return to playing Pitch and Putt.

We recognise the tremendous sacrifice made by our healthcare personnel in keeping us safe and looking after those suffering from

Newmarket Pitch and Putt course COVID 19 in such a professional way. We all realise that 2020 is completely different for us and we have all had to adjust to the new normal. We know many are struggling with various issues because of the changes to our normal lives, and we hope returning to Pitch and Putt

despite the limitations for this year, will be of some assistance to people.

New members are always most welcome and we encourage you to avail of this state-of-the-art 18-hole Pitch and Putt course, which was newly renovated and redesigned in 2015 to USGA standards.

REVAMP DONATES FACE MASKS IRD Duhallow Furniture REVAMP was delighted to be in a position to donate facemasks for Rathmore Social Action Group, Teach Altra Nursing Home in Newmarket, Millstreet Community Hospital and Araglen Nursing Home in Boherbue.

In an effort to assist our local services to the vulnerable and older people with the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) they have been facing through the Covid-19 crisis, Duhallow Furniture REVAMP decided to put their skills to good use and started making the reusable facemasks.

The Government of Ireland approved the recommendation from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) on the wearing of face coverings, including ones made from cloth, in locations such as shops and public transport.

The communities of Duhallow all rallied together as donations of material flooded in and volunteers lent a helping hand to REVAMP’s staff for the handmade facemasks.

A number of facemasks will also soon be available to purchase by the public to help fund the project.

COVID-19: LOOKING FORWARD TO THE RECOVERY Covid-19 Restart Grants are now available to be applied for.

The new Restart Grant will give direct grant aid to micro and small businesses to help them with the costs associated with reopening and reemploying workers following closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The grant will give direct aid to businesses with a turnover of less than €5 million, and employing 50 people or less, which were compelled to cease

trading or impacted by at least a 25 per cent reduction in turnover out to June 30th, 2020.

Application forms for the Covid-19 Restart Grants can now be downloaded from all local authority websites.

Community Food Initiative

Remote cookery programme PART ONE FRENCH TOAST

The Community Food Initiative aims to positively influence the eating habits of families with children by focusing on the skills and knowledge around food and healthy eating, healthier shopping and enhanced cooking skills.

IRD Duhallow is delivering a six-week Remote Cookery Programme to families in the Duhallow region.

For anyone that wants to follow along, we will share these recipes over the coming weeks.

MEAT LOAF Ingredients: 450g of lean mince 2 medium green apples, finely chopped n 6 dried apricots, chopped into small pieces n 1 large onion, very finely chopped n 110g of breadcrumbs n 2 dessertspoons of tomato sauce n 10 walnuts, quartered n 2 medium eggs, beaten n 1 teaspoon of oil to Method: brush the loaf tin n Salt and pepper to 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees/Gas Mark 4 taste.

2. In a large bowl mix all ingredients together with your hands 3. Grease the loaf tin with the oil and add the mixture 4. Cook in preheated oven for 75-90 mins n n

2 eggs 30ml of low-fat milk ½ tsp of cinnamon 1 tsp of vanilla extract 4 slices of bread 20ml vegetable oil

Method: 1. Beat egg, milk, cinnamon and vanilla together in a shallow bowl 2. Dip slices in the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides evenly 3. Fry in a medium to hot frying pan 4. Drain on kitchen paper and serve.

Serving suggestions: mixed berries, maple syrup, chocolate spread.

These can also be made savoury by replacing the cinnamon and vanilla extract with salt and pepper.

Serving suggestions for savoury French toast: avocado, eggs, cheese, smoked salmon.

A doula can make all the difference Anita O’Sullivan is the owner of Soma Wellness and Birth, based in Ballydesmond. She is a complementary health practitioner, as well as a trained birth doula, childbirth educator and a member of the Doula Association of Ireland.

A doula is a trained professional, providing continuity of emotional and physical support, alongside evidence based information throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the early post-partum days.

Here are Anita’s top three tips for expectant mom’s preparing for birth: 1. Know your birthing options. A hospital birth is by default the most common choice of setting for birth.

In Cork and Kerry we have an amazing homebirth service, run in conjunction with the HSE and Community Midwives.

Trained birth doula Anita O’Sullivan 2. Gather your support team. This could be: partner, doula, close friend, family member or a mixture.

Your support team should be those that you can openly speak to about your hopes, dreams and fears around birth. Trusting that who

you choose will provide you with non-judgemental support, advice and guidance.

3. Plan for the early days and weeks after birth. Our focus can sometimes be so much on preparing for birth and baby that we forget about our own physical and emotional recovery after the birth. What will your early days of motherhood look like? What support will you have in place?

Each month, Anita hosts a virtual MamaRising Pregnancy Circle for expectant mom’s to find support and explore topics around pregnancy.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.

A SHOULDER TO CRY ON We are all experiencing a range of emotions during this time. A lot of us may be feeling the loss of life as we once knew it. We are unable to socialise, to physically see and interact with our friends and loved ones. We may find that we feel anxious or that we can’t sleep or are sleeping more. One thing we can all agree on is that there has been a significant change in our familiar patterns of behaviour and this can cause conflicting feelings and emotions.

Many of us may find ourselves searching for answers, looking to news broadcasts, social media, peers and loved ones for some guidance. We hear a lot of intellectual comments that may be rational and true BUT they do not help how we are feeling emotionally.

We are worried about ourselves, our family and friends, our frontline staff, our country and the world as a whole. We may feel like we need to reason with ourselves and “be strong for others” who may be anxious and upset. It is important

Usually at the end of an interview you are given the opportunity to ask the interviewer some questions.

Never say no when you are asked do you have any questions! It is important that you have some questions ready as this is your chance to show your enthusiasm and interest in the job.

Sometimes it can be tricky to think of questions to ask when you are put on the spot. So you should do your research, and come prepared with a few good and pertinent questions to put to your interviewer in relation to the company or the job itself.

Over the weekend of 8th/9th/10th May a fundraiser – ‘Duhallow Fittest Club’ – took place in aid of ICRR Rathcoole Air Ambulance, Millstreet and Kanturk Community Hospitals and the Burren Chernobyl Project.

The fundraiser was organised by both Kiskeam and Ballydesmond GAA clubs and involved 23 adult male and female clubs.

It was a great opportunity for all athletes in Duhallow to get a sense of purpose to their individual running and enjoy a bit of competitiveness during these strange times while at

the same time giving something back to the community.

Regardless of the winners, every club and participant should be extremely proud of what they achieved over the event weekend.

The real winners are the charities and the good people of Duhallow have come together to give them a huge financial boost during these difficult times. On behalf of the ICRR Rathcoole Air Ambulance, Millstreet and Kanturk Community hospitals and the Burren Chernobyl Project, thank you all.

Pictured above, Conor Linehan, Barry Linehan, Matthew Collins and Donal O’Connor (Ballydesmond) The money raised amounts to more than €35,000 so every step taken and every inch travelled by each participant and every euro donated will undoubtedly make a massive difference in the lives of people all over Duhallow and further afield.

The event ended in a stalemate between Kiskeam and Ballydesmond (covering 3,934.65km) and Kiskeam winning the best participant average of 101.37km; so the competition was due to go to a tie-breaker on the 23rd/24th of May, but due to the bereavement of Christy Herlihy of Kiskeam, it was postponed. May he rest in peace.

Following a re-tally of the times, Ballydesmond won the Fittest Club title by a matter of seconds.

The people of Duhallow came together for a greater good and that, for sure, is all that matters. When all the aches and pains are gone the difference made by everyone will live on. Go raibh mile maith agat!

To Trinity or not to Trinity, that is the question... (minor spoilers) g

Many of us are captivated by the cultural zeitgeist that is ‘Normal People’ at present. Whether it is the escapism, nostalgia or the pertinent handling of modern issues, it has everything a quarantined people needs. However, from the perspective of Rurality, there is one theme that requires consideration; the place of Trinity College for prospective rural students.

Connell, the only child of a single mother in a small Sligo town, is a model student who is debating the merits of the ‘traditional’ options or English in Trinity.

The distrust and stigma that Trinity College represented to people like Connell is clear: “...People would not necessarily think he had done well; some people might think he had gone very bad, while others would forget about him entirely.”

This outlook is compounded by the awkward silence that greets Connell’s stated choice when he meets the parents of his Debs date. They are impressed by his college but disappointed by his course, silently judgemental.

Normal People is an Irish drama TV series produced by Element Pictures for BBC Three and Hulu in association with Screen Ireland. Based on the novel of the same name by Sally Rooney, it charts the relationship between Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan as they navigate adulthood from their final days in secondary school to their undergraduate years in Trinity College.

Normal People: A rural perspective Paul Mescal as Connell and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne in Normal People It transpires that Connell’s move to Dublin isn’t glamorous. A failure to ‘fit-in’ is compounded by apparently being outmatched against his privately educated peers, a reality to many outside of the small screen.

Author Sally Rooney, no doubt helped by her upbringing in Mayo, perfectly captures the class/ cultural division at the heart of Connell’s decision; the clash of modern Ireland which promises individualistic equality against the glass wall that is old fashioned ideas of ‘Notions’ and Class.

Trinity, stemming from a unique heritage tied up with the British class system, is thought to be off limits to some of us due to snobbery, career prospects, and increasingly, the cost of studying in Dublin. Trinity itself is not free of guilt, however, it still maintains itself as Ireland’s highest ranking University with a global attraction.

It is simplistic to say it is the ‘best’ but it is at least a highly regarded institution that can give prospective students the very best chance starting their career.

When we question students who say they are studying something outside of the traditional Medicine or Law, we do this with their interests at heart. We are concerned for their future earnings and the non-existent prospect of employment in their hometown. Yet when we do so, we create another hurdle in the path of disadvantaged students who wish to pursue their ambition.

Angling

How to trick that trout

The trout angling season opens on the 15th of February and closes on the 30th of September in the Duhallow region (though Covid-19 restrictions put a hold on angling until May 6th this year). There are exceptions to these dates on some rivers and lakes across the country.

The most common and indeed the most successful method of angling for trout is fly fishing. This involves using artificially made flies which mimic the natural flies which make up the trout’s diet throughout the year.

Most anglers will spend the winter months during the close season creating these fly patterns as they are generally referred to. Artificial flies need to be a close representation of the natural insect which trout are feeding on at various times of the season.

It is very important that anglers have some understanding of the seasonal feeding patterns of trout. The diet of trout is strongly influenced by the seasonal availability of suitable prey items.

Early in the season fish will feed on adult water louse and shrimps

Artificially made flies mimic the natural flies which make up the trout’s diet before these invertebrates go on to reproduce and die in spring time.

As the larvae, nymphs or pupae of chironomids, stoneflies, mayflies and caddis flies become more active, trout will consume large numbers of them at subsurface level. Once large numbers of insects start to hatch in late spring, trout will target both the emerging insects and the adults on their return to the river to lay their eggs.

In autumn and following winter periods the trout’s diet will largely revert to the subsurface items it was feeding on in early spring. Being cold-blooded animals, the trouts’ feeding rate will be dictated by water temperature.

Because of the different types of insect and other food items available to trout, anglers will have to work out which food item the trout favour at a particular time of the year. It is very important when you arrive at the river or lake to observe which insects are on the water and most importantly the size and colour of the natural insect. By lifting a few stones from the edge of the river you will also be able to observe which nymphs are active and also pay attention to the size and colour of these.

Mind those four-legged toddlers I remember the excitement (and trepidation) of facing my first foreign body surgery in a dog several years ago as a young(er) vet, like it was yesterday.

A foreign body is when a dog (usually a Labrador!) has eaten something they shouldn’t (a sock or a stone), which has been swallowed and become stuck. This results in serious vomiting and a very unwell dog. Usually, the object has to be removed by surgery, which, as well as the excitement of the imminent satisfaction at making the patient feel much better, the surgery is accompanied by an air of excitement at finding out the answer to one tricky question – what strange object has the patient eaten?!

Sometimes we can have a fair guess in advance if the owner has

noticed something missing around the house, sometimes we have our suspicions after examining X-rays or scans of the belly. Sometimes we don’t have a clue until we go in to retrieve it!

The object in my first such surgery was a bit of an anti-climax – a pair of knickers – but the patient went home feeling far better the day following surgery, so all was well.

Since then, I have retrieved a few more unusual objects over the years – the excitement never gets old..! Thirty hair bobbles from the stomach of a cat, an entire wooden ice-cream stick swallowed whole, half of a car tyre worth of perished rubber, several rusty sewing needles (a particularly tricky one) – the list is a long one!

The moral of the story is that dogs (and cats!) can try to eat anything if they put their minds to it– so it’s best to pretend you have a small four-legged toddler in the house and keep all suspect objects well out of reach!

Natural hay fever remedies

By MAIREAD O’KEEFFE Hay fever affects about 10 per cent of the population and causes sneezing, a runny nose and itchy eyes. It’s very unpleasant for sufferers but there are lots of ways to lessen the symptoms.

1. Stay indoors if you can.

2. Using Vaseline or HayMax around your nostrils can prevent pollen entering your nose and triggering your hay fever.

3. Many sufferers benefit from taking TerraNova Quercetin Nettle Complex. It contains a mixture of Quercetin and Nettle which have natural anti-histamine properties along with anti-inflammatory turmeric, and elderflower.

4. Hay-band is completely natural,

drug-free, has no side effects and can be used by anyone, even children. Hay-band was developed by leading acupuncturists and exerts a small amount of pressure on the arm at a point which helps combat hay fever symptoms.

5. A diet rich in red meat and poultry can increase the likelihood of the development of hay fever and asthma. Decreasing your intake of meat may help lessen symptoms.

Another good remedy to combat hay fever symptoms is Irish Botanica All Seasons Complex, which is a syrup.

ORAL HYGIENE VITAL FOR HEALTH During this ongoing period of lockdown, normal services such as routine visits to the dentist have been inaccessible. Taking good care of your mouth on a daily basis can help prevent bad breath, gum disease, tooth decay – and much more, writes Danielle Quinlivan of Quinlivan Dental, Kanturk.

There is now plenty of research available to show that a neglected or unhealthy mouth may increase the risk of more serious health issues such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, preterm labour and poorly controlled diabetes!

Poor oral hygiene can lead to sore or bleeding gums related to plaque build-up. To help avoid this happening you should brush twice a day every day with an electric toothbrush. I prefer an electric toothbrush as it makes it easier for everyone to do a much better job cleaning their teeth.

Essentially, the bleeding has to get worse before it gets better – and the inflammation will resolve with effective brushing.

After six weeks of having your prescription blonde applied you should get a toner and a treatment in the salon to refresh your hair which will keep your blonde from going brassy and will gain you another six to eight weeks until it’s time for adding your next set of prescription hi-lites.

The right home care is essential.

A brightening shampoo keeps your hair looking fresh and stops discolouration. Everyone should have a clarifying shampoo to detox the hair every two weeks. This will cleanse the hair and stop build up.

Then, make sure you use a hair mask like Joico Luster Lock, to work through the hair shaft and heal the cuticle of the hair to stop impurities going back in after cleansing.

But seriously, we must nurture and cherish the dandelions, they are the most valuable early spring wildflower for bees and crucial for their survival.

The food crops that supply 90% of the world’s nutrition are pollinated by bees, so the humble dandelion plays a vital role in our own survival as well. If bees became extinct, it has been estimated that the human race would only survive for four years.

Dandelion is a corruption of the French dent de lion meaning ‘lion's tooth’, referring to the coarsely toothed edges of the leaves. It has some other common names as well,

Castlemagner, Cecilstown & Kilbrin

Kilbrin volunteers start baking drive for cocooners Locals in Kilbrin have risen to the challenge of organising a Home Baking Drive and distributing the food to those cocooning in the Parish. This was led by Margaret O’Callaghan, GAA Chairperson.

There is a dedicated team of 23 volunteers comprising bakers and those delivering the food to over 100 households throughout Kilbrin, with all the volunteers adhering strictly to social distancing and sanitation protocols.

The reception they all got was terrific, people were delighted to get home baking to enjoy with their cup of tea and to see a friendly face and have a chat.

As people became aware of this initiative, Bobby Philpott of Philpott's Bakery in Kanturk contacted the Castlemagner Community Development Association is inviting the elderly in our parish to share your memories. We are asking you to record these memories on paper.

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A 1. What/who inspired you to become a sportsperson in your field?

I used to watch the Tour de France every summer with my Dad and decided to give it a go, so we went into Kanturk to the local cycling club. I found the love for the sport and it started from there.

2. What was the moment that you knew you were on the right track?

It was in my years as a Junior (U18), I started to win a few races as a first year and then as a second year winning a Junior Nations Cup, Junior Tour of Ireland for a second time and the Junior Tour of Wales, I knew something was being done right and had to stick with it to see how far I can get.

3. What is your greatest strength?

A will to succeed.

4. What is your greatest sporting achievement?

Winning the u23 Tour of Flanders 2017.

5. What is your greatest personal achievement?

Having a job that I enjoy and love.

6. What was the greatest challenge you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

I suffered a severe concussion in June 2017. It was something that really affected me mentally and physically, it took me a number of months to start feeling somewhat normal. It almost caused me to call time on my short career – some side effects from it lasted for a year and I still notice some small effects to this day. I was lucky to be surrounded by my family, girlfriend and friends.

Although I clearly wasn’t myself, they were there for me throughout the whole experience, the support I got from them really encouraged me to get back to

Eddie Dunbar (born September 1st, 1996) is an Irish road racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam Team Ineos.

Born in Banteer, Eddie joined Team Sky in September 2018, after his previous team Aqua Blue Sport – whom he had joined at the start of 2018 – encountered financial issues, and with the being me and get back to where I had left off.

7. Who supported you the most in your career?

Danny Curtin has supported me since I first started cycling, he’s been there throughout my whole career. He’s one of the main reasons why I am where I am in my cycling career and I still go to him for advice to this day.

8. What advice would you give to young players just starting out?

Whatever it is you're doing, do it because it’s something you want to do. Do it for yourself and not to please others. You’ll get much more enjoyment from it that way and you’ll quickly find what makes you happy whether it's sport, education or any other aspect of your life.

9. What do you do outside of sports?

I like to meet up with friends and family whenever possible. I also do a good bit of running when I can, it's something I enjoy especially in the off-season. Big rugby fan as well as I played it for eight years so I’ll always watch the Munster and Ireland matches when they're on.

10. What are your goals going forward?

To keep improving and learn. Just by being around and spending time with the guys in INEOS I’ve learned so much in just over a year and a half. Some of the best riders in the world are on the team so this will help me massively in my career and to one day hopefully win some of the world's most well known races.
