Mindfulness for every day

Self-compassion in isolation

(BA) Counselling & Psychotherapy Self compassion is a cornerstone of mindfulness practice. They go hand in hand and as such it is important for us to enhance our capacity for self compassion as we build a mindfulness routine.

The recent increased time we have at home also means increased time with ourselves. What I mean by this is that, the usual hustle and bustle of our day to day lives has changed and it has left us with a lot of time on our hands. This time can be both rewarding and challenging.

We may find ourselves more productive around the home, getting things crossed off the list that we’ve wanted to do for ages, trying new recipes or even exercising more.

We may however also find ourselves eating unhealthier and convenience foods, staying in bed for longer during the day, allowing more negative thoughts to the surface than we usually would.

All of the above is an understandable side effect of these strange times. But how best can we try to strike a balance, moving forward with a little more love and kindness for ourselves? We are our own biggest critics, so how might we develop some positive self talk that would be gentler?

Think on the following four tips that can help you to boost your capacity for self compassion: 1. someone else: Think of a friend or loved one struggling at this time.

What would you say to them? How would you comfort them? Do you offer the same care and comfort to yourself? Could you try it?

2. Give yourself permission to be imperfect: Don’t lose sight of the knowledge that we are only human.

We make mistakes – making a bad decision does not make you a bad person. Let us use our mistakes as a tool for learning.

3. Remember that you’re not alone: We are all in this together and we

will come through this together. The greater shared experience helps us remember we are part of a bigger picture within which we are all only doing our best to get along. Nobody is perfect nor do they need to be.

4. Build your mindfulness practice: Be it a structured meditation or mindfulness routine, be it taking some exercise or simply sitting outdoors taking in nature. It may just be simply to focus on your breath for a few moments every day, whatever way you find best to find peace, practice it daily.

Mindfulness check-in 2 The following is a very simple three step mindfulness check-in that you can do anywhere at any time. Short and straightforward practices such as this one can help us to build our ability to stay present and respond with greater strength in times of stress.

Now is a good time for upskilling While the pandemic COVID-19 is a juggernaut we did not plan for and we cannot control there are areas where we can now prepare for the recovery. One of these areas is evaluating the knowledge and skills needed for the upturn.

Whether you are an employer or an employee, self-employed or unemployed it's a good time to think about upskilling. Often, we do not have time for training in our normal busy business lives, so in a period where we have downtime learning a new skill or technology is one of the ways we can prepare for the future.

Of course social distancing and group gatherings restrictions limit face to face, onsite and in house training but with the latest technology like Zoom, Google Hangouts and Webinar, most short courses can be delivered online.

O’CONNOR The major advantage of learning online is you can do it from anywhere; you just need a computer and broadband access. Many of the online classes in IRD Duhallow are scheduled around lunchtime so that learners can "lunch and learn" which makes them convenient for employees and employers.

Online learning and upskilling is typically more economical than sitting in a classroom, as the trainer can teach from home, the students do not need to travel, the training room is free i.e. it's virtual, and you bring your own lunch...

Upskilling doesn't mean doing an entire degree, it means adding a new skill that will benefit you and

your employer. After the downturn, employers will look for employees who can multi-task and take on new responsibilities and somebody who has taken the initiative to learn new skills.

IRD Duhallow and Duhallow Skillnet and their training partners have moved many of their classes online, and the number of registrations has increased significantly.

Typically, the social media classes are very popular – these include Advanced Facebook, Content Creation for Social Media and Instagram.

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis there are high levels of unemployment but there are also certain industries that are hiring staff. Finding the right job can be a challenge at the best of times, so therefore it is important that it is approached correctly.

IRD Duhallow Job Centre will assist you by giving you a clear understanding of the process of applying for a job. A personcentred approach is utilised to provide a range of services to individuals looking for a job. Remote working: my experience The Covid-19 crisis has resulted in a changed working environment for many workers, with teleconferencing, Skyping and remote working becoming the new norm.

There is a significant shift in the thought process of many employers, some of whom had resisted the concept of working from home for many years. Perhaps this was a trust issue, a fear that not actually being present in the office meant not actually working, or maybe it was a worry around productivity.

Recently however, it is proven that work life can be conducted from locations other than the office and only time will tell whether productivity will increase or decrease with these adapted working conditions.

Recently the North Cork Development Board of Cork County Council conducted our meeting through Zoom and approved funding of €36,000 to two projects in North Cork, proving that work will go on and we all have to adapt to changing circumstances.

The new reality for many in our communities means that social isolation will now be a consequence of social distancing. So when we think about the most vulnerable in our own area and those who might not be ‘tech savvy’, consider if you can spare a half hour to show them how to use it. It might just be the greatest piece of Community Service you do in 2020.

Messages from the past

By SEAN RADLEY Curator, Millstreet Museum, Co. Cork In this the 40th anniversary year of Millstreet Museum (1980–2020) we are delighted to share features on a selection of the many very interesting historic items that have been presented to our Museum over the past four decades.

One of the treasures presented in the 1990s is a very important Autograph Book which the late Canon Donagh O’Donovan who was Parish Priest of Millstreet in the 1990s directed should be donated to Millstreet Museum.

This was arranged by Fr. Jim Kennelly, P.P. with the Autograph Book being put on display in the Museum in 1995.

This original historic item was presented to Canon O’Donovan’s mother, Mrs. T. O’Donovan of Abbeydorney, Co. Kerry. The many entries in the Autograph Book are hugely interesting and truly historic where we view the various pages written and drawn by many an Irishman who were held prisoners in Above, Canon Donagh O’Donovan, P.P., Millstreet Easter early 1990s; below, Frongoch Prison in Wales in 1916. the Autograph Book with entries by Irish patriots imprisoned in Wales in 1916 We share a selection of the entries on the page opposite, where we note quite a number of entries from Co. Cork, Co. Kerry and beyond. While most of the entries include poetry, rhymes and reflections, one also observes a wonderful variety of creative drawings.

Incidentally, Millstreet Day Care Centre is often referred to as the Canon O’Donovan Centre because it was he who donated the land for the building of the Centre.

In future issues of Discover Duhallow we shall share many more historic items from Millstreet Museum. Until then, stay safe.

Covid-19 volunteer group steps up to aid community

Well done to the Millstreet CV Support Group that are facilitating community engagement in response to the needs of older people, those with disabilities or living independently in the community in their endeavours to limit the impact of the coronavirus.

The volunteer community group was set up to help people who fear being exposed to the Covid19 virus or who may have to self-

isolate because of the virus or have been in close contact and as a result are confined to their homes.

The group consists of more than 40 volunteers, with two vans and an array of personal skills, who can provide assistance by organising shopping and delivery of groceries and other essential needs.

All the services are totally free

to the community, and if the pandemic develops and requests for assistance change the group will evolve to meet these new demands where possible.

The group organised a mail drop of this information to every home in the catchment area, with more volunteers extremely welcome.

A look back in time

The Ballydrochane Ambush in 1920 The Ballydrochane ambush took place on the main road between Kanturk and Newmarket, two towns where the police and military were in constant communication with each other. From the IRA point of view, the ambush was a success, with a number of arms as well as ammunition being captured. One British soldier was killed and at least half a dozen wounded.

As a result of intelligence reports

by John O’Connell, the Intelligence Officer of D Company, 6th Battalion, a decision was taken to attack the British troops at Ballydrochane, about one mile north-west of Kanturk, on October 11th, 1920.

Newmarket and Kanturk are five miles apart and at that time the strength of the enemy forces in each town was approximately 80.

Whilst not considered an ideal ambush position, it was deemed to be the most suitable on that stretch of road. Reports indicated that fairly regular movement of troops, travelling in Crossley tenders, occurred between Kanturk and Newmarket. Usually at least two tenders travelled together. In order that fire could be concentrated upon them from a single location, it was crucial that the Crossleys be halted before opening fire. The plan was to place a heavy farm cart accross the road at the ambush site.

The main body of Volunteers were positioned behind the road fence and covered about one hundred yards of the road.

Fifty yards further towards Kanturk there was a Hotchkiss gun emplacement. The gun was capable of sweeping the whole length of the ambush position. On the outskirts of Kanturk a number of Volunteers, armed with shotguns, saws and axes, took up position.

They were there to fell trees and generally obstruct the road so as to cut off any retreat of ambushed party and to confront any British reinforcements that might be sent out from Kanturk.

The monument on the left indicates where the British army lorry was halted on what was then a much narrower road at Ballydrochane, near Kanturk Towards Newmarket, the majority of D Company were engaged in blocking the road from there, so as to prevent any British reinforcements from reaching the ambush site.

Instead of the two or three lorries expected, only one turned up and the firefight lasted no more than a few minutes. With the farm cart having been shoved into position, the lorry rounded the bend and crashed into it.

The driver was shot dead and all eight British soldiers were wounded.

Their rifles and ammunition were captured and the Crossley tender set alight.

The Volunteers then retreated west towards Boherbue and subsequently moved back into their own areas. Reinforcements from Kanturk and Newmarket and Buttevant later converged on the ambush area but all Volunteers (amongst whom there were no casualties) had left the scene by then.

After dark, local IRA members patrolled the town of Kanturk in order to guard against reprisals by the authorities. Following the earlier attack on Mallow Barracks, a number of houses in that town were burned and the Volunteers were determined to prevent a repetition of that in Kanturk.

How to entertain your pet g By JANE PIGOTT GP vet & Consultant Veterinary Cardiologist

As we continue to stay at home to keep each other safe during the coronavirus pandemic, it is fair to say that our current lives, along with those of our four-legged friends, are anything but normal at present.

Like us, our dogs and cats will have noticed the change in routine, and are probably a little confused as to why the family is at home in the house more than usual, and in some cases might be a little frustrated that they can’t go on as frequent or long walks to their favourite spots at the moment.

Never fear – there are plenty of things that we can do to keep our pets entertained during this time, many of which might bring a smile to their human friends’ faces in the process.

1. Make feeding time fun and challenging: Ditch the usual food bowl and make feeding time more mentally fulfilling for your pet by adding an element of challenge to getting each morsel of food.

Puzzle feeders (of varying degrees of difficulty!) are commercially available and will challenge your pet to lick food from the grooves of a maze shaped bowl or require them to lift levers or objects out of the way to get to the snacks. These are great at keeping pets entertained, however several home-made versions can easily and safely be made out of objects in the home. If you have a queen cake baking tin at home this can easily be used to

You can even make feeding time fun – for example, with a puzzle feeder make a fun feeding puzzle by placing kibble or treats where the buns would normally go and placing tennis balls or other toys over the top of each bun hole so that the pet has to use its nose to shove the balls out of the way to get to the food. When they are tired of that, you can flip the bun tin upside-down and spread kibble or a bit of spreadable cheese around the upturned tin to provide a new feeding challenge.

2. Learn a new skill: With plenty of time on our hands, now is the time to get the family involved in training your dog the basic skills of sit, lie down and stay on command.

Once they have these basics mastered, you can move on to more complex tricks – you and your dog’s

imagination is the only limit! Several great training videos can be found online with a quick search. Basic agility training could also be done in the back garden – a sure way to keep you and your dog fit and entertained!

3. Harness your cat’s hunter behaviour: Cats are predators by nature, and a great way to fulfil this instinct is to engage in ‘cat fishing’. Toys attached securely by a string to the end of a pole (anything rod-like you can find in the house!), can provide endless hours of stalking and pouncing fun for your cat and keeps them fit in the process! Be sure to let them catch the ‘prey’ occasionally to satisfy their hunting instincts.

2. Toning – Tone twice daily after cleaning, this will remove any remaining bits of oil and debris left behind after cleansing and hydrate and balance skin. Spritz toners are great to use throughout the day to refresh and hydrate, and can even be used over make up, or can be popped into your bag for that busy person on the go.

3. Moisturizing- Moisturize twice daily after toning, to hydrate and soften skin. *Top tip - use SPF moisturizer daily to protect skin from sun damage which can cause signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation.

Remember, there is no instant fix. Give it time you will reap the benefits and results may be seen after 4-6 weeks through consistent use and dedication.

A temporary fix for visible roots Colouring your hair can be well worth it to obtain a stunning shade but dealing with visible roots at the moment isn’t exactly one of the perks – especially when all hair salons have closed due to Covid-19, writes Clare Clernon Scibirowska of The Hair Studio, Kanturk.

Conceal your roots with a cover up spray, it can be sprayed directly onto new growth and paring through the length of your hair to hide the roots.

White strands are usually drier than coloured hair so they tend to frizz a litle more. Natural grey hair can look dull and dry but this doesn’t have to happen, with a litle TLC your grey hair will look sot and shiny. Always use a good hydraing shampoo for day to day use and then once a month use a violet shampoo as grey hair tends to take a yellow hue. This is due to pollutants in the atmosphere, so the undertones in the violet shampoo will neutralise any yellow/brassy tones.

All about brown trout

I have had a fascination with brown trout since I was very young. My first introduction to these beautiful creatures began when my father would return on a Sunday evening after a day’s fishing on the Owentaraglen or the Brogeen with a bag of trout. I was completely taken by the beauty of these fish with their conical eyes, golden flanks and large red spots.

Since those early childhood days I have spent most of my spare time in pursuit of brown trout, a pursuit which has taken me to many beautiful angling destinations around the world.

All the rivers in the Duhallow region have a good healthy stock of wild brown trout despite the many challenges they have faced from man over the years. Trout, like all fish, depend on good, clean and well oxygenated water to survive as well as aquatic insects which also demand the same conditions for survival. Clean water and silt free gravel beds are vital for spawning trout and the survival of freshly produced eggs.

One of the few behavioural features common to all brown trout in Ireland is that they spawn in running water. To date there are no confirmed records of trout spawning on gravel shores in lakes. Trout will spawn in some very tiny streams, some so small you could step across them without breaking a stride. Most trout will spawn in the tributaries of the main catchment rivers. Gravel sizes in these small streams are much smaller than in the main rivers and are more suitable for trout.

The female does most of the work, scooping out the gravel with her tail and anal fin to create the nest or redd. Her eggs are fertilised

All the rivers in the Duhallow region have a good stock of wild brown trout immediately, once shed by the attendant male. She then covers the eggs with gravel to complete the redd. Fish can be seen sitting on redds during daylight hours, however brown trout in Ireland, unlike Atlantic salmon, tend to spawn only at dusk and just after dark.

Once trout hatch and leave the redd they are on the move for the rest of their lives. In rivers and streams they are normally territorial with most dominant (usually the largest) fish holding station in the best location.

As fish grow they move from shallow riffle areas into deeper glides and pools. The largest trout in a river or stream will usually be found in the deepest pools.

A number of different features combine to create the ideal lie for a large trout in a river. Such locations must be to one side of the main flow, to allow the fish to conserve energy, yet close enough to enable the fish to drift easily into the current to capture any passing food items.

be far away from the safety of a deep pool area or undercut bank.

This pattern often breaks down for a number of different reasons. In drought conditions, or when danger threatens, large shoals of juvenile salmon and trout of all sizes are often crammed into the few available pool areas. Observation indicates that their aggressive territorial behavioural instincts are put aside in these circumstances in the interest of survival.

For the angler to approach wild brown trout it takes a great degree of stealth and care to successfully outwit these wily creatures. As I mentioned earlier trout have conical eyes which enable them to see both in front and to their rear to a certain distance, so it’s important to keep a low profile when approaching trout especially in low water conditions.

There is so much to know about trout and angling for trout that it would not be possible to cover everything in this article, so maybe some more articles on brown trout and angling is the way to go.

Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups 2oz milk chocolate n 2oz dark chocolate n 1/4 cup of honey n Half a cup of peanut butter (I used smooth) n 3tbsp coconut oil (olive oil will do) n Cupcake tin and 12 paper cases What you do: Take 12 paper cases and pop them in the cupcake tin.

Base: Melt the chocolate and 1tbsp of oil in the microwave or in a bowl over a pot of boiling water (a bain marie). Place one tbsp of the melted chocolate in the bottom of each case and shake the tray gently so they become level. Freeze for 30mins.

Fill: Mix the honey, peanut butter and 1tbsp of oil until smooth and runny. You may need to pop it in the microwave for 20 seconds so it is runnier. Place one tbsp of the mix on top of the frozen chocolate base, level it out and pop in the freezer again. Take the melted chocolate and once again place 1tbsp on top of the frozen PB. Move quick as it will get messy! Shake the tray again to level off the chocolate, finish with a pinch of sea salt and freeze again for 30 mins. Remove from the freezer and peel off the paper cases, enjoy with a cuppa and store in the fridge! n

The peanut butter cups are the ideal sweet treat with your tea and also a challenge for your cooking skills. As for the smoothie bowl, it’s a fabulous fresh breakfast idea, and also great to get the kids creative with food as they can decorate away all day!

My name is Matthew Collins, and I have a small food company in Ballydesmond, The Sibly Food Co. From a wide range of cheesecakes to rocky road, brownies and healthy energy balls, everything is homemade and handmade in Ballydesmond. I started the company with a small Christmas market in December 2018, before joining up with Capabu Foods in Millstreet and Supervalu Newmarket in late 2019.

While I was interested in food from a young age, I drifted away from it during my time in school, but returned to it at the beginning of college when the need to feed myself arose when living away from home!

My main inspiration for starting the company was the sheer difficulty of getting quality sweet treats which are not highly processed with a best before date of two months.

The Time We Spring-Cleaned the World The world it got so busy, There were people all around.

They left their germs behind them; In the air and on the ground.

All the queens and kings had a meeting.

‘It's time to clean the world up!’ they said.

And so they had to close lots of fun stuff, Just so these germs couldn't spread.

We couldn't go to cinemas Or restaurants for our tea.

There was no football or parties, The world got as quiet as can be.

These germs grew much bigger and stronger.

They wanted to come and stay.

They didn't want to hurt anyone They just really wanted to play.

Sometimes they tried to hold your hand, Or tickled your throat or your nose.

They could make you cough and sneeze And make your face as red as a rose.

And so these germs took over.

They started to make people ill, And with every cough we coughed

More and more germs would spill.

The kids stopped going to school, Mums and dads went to work less.

A great big, giant scrubbing brush Cleaned the sky and the sea and the mess!

Dads started teaching the sums, Big brothers played with us more, Mums were in charge of homework We read and played jigsaws galore!

The whole world was washing their hands

And building super toilet roll forts!

Outside was quiet and peaceful, Now home was the place for all sports.

So we played in the world that was home And our days filled up with fun and love, And the germs they grew smaller and smaller And the sun watched from up above.
