Supersalone WELCOME BACK Nowhere near as expansive as a normal iteration, a pared down version of Salone del Mobile, Milan called “Supersalone” still drew more than 60,000 attendees in the first week of September, over half of which were trade operators and buyers (and half of that from outside of Italy) to see 425 brands showcasing new product. And as always, off-site exhibitions gave the city a vibrancy that has been long awaited.

Milano Horizontal | TUBES RADIATORI Since radiators still exist, why not a flashy, sinuous, seductive version of it? That’s what designers Antonia Astori and Nicola De Ponti have done to an otherwise utilitarian appliance. Electrically powered and now available in a horizontal application in two lengths, this reinvisioned piece of interior sculpture can be installed on the wall or floor, suspended a few centimetres off the ground. www.tubesradiatori.com

Dam XL | ARRMET This stool is the latest addition to one of the company’s most popular collections. An additional ring makes the back of the stool higher, ensuring greater comfort and balance. Bull in a china shop? More like a wrestler in a room full of ballet dancers. That is the impression this fabulous find made among the aisles of typically refined and delicate Italian furniture. Designed by Dror Benshetrit, the armchair compresses a cubic metre of foam rubber around a tubular metal frame and then paints it in an oxidized copper and/or concrete effect using a complex manual surface treatment. Supersalone Fuoripista Bike | ELITE Home isolation during the pandemic, when we were all sitting around getting fat, led to the explosion of commercials for home stationary bikes like Peloton or Bowflex. But none of them looked like this! Designed in cooperation with Adriano Design, this space-age wheelless wellness bike made of ash wood, tempered glass, and steel is decidedly more sober and refined in its style — a very Italian approach to the growing home athleisure market. www.fuoripista.it

Croma | LODES The fourth output in an ongoing collaboration with designer Luca Nichetto, this floor lamp takes its name from the Italian word for a musical note known as a ‘quaver’ or ‘eighth,’ played for one eighth the duration of a whole note. Here, unlike typical standing lamps, the fan-out occurs at the base rather than the top, allowing a slender frame to emit subtle washes of light upwards across the wall and ceiling. www.lodes.com

Grace | SÉ Taking up residence at Galleria Rossana Orlandi for Milan Design Week, the Londonbased design house presented a wide-ranging exhibit of their work, within which they launched interesting new pieces by Slovenian designer Nika Zupanc. Garden | GEO LUZ & CERÂMICA At the off-site Brasil - Design in Motion exhibition, organized at the University of Milan, issues of sustainability and biophilia were on full display in the myriad of products being shown. But this little ceramic and aluminum table lamp nestled within a mini-garden was a pleasant find. Designed by Maurício D’Ávila, it is both playful and practical in its suggestion of how to include nature in everyday objects and spaces. www.geoceramica.com.br

The Marmini Collection | LA CHANCE Designer Hannes Peer was deeply inspired by the work of New York artist and art critic Scott Burton, in particular his Rock Chair, seen clearly in this twopiece collection. Both the chaise longue and stool juxtapose triangular shapes of Verde Alpi, Bianco Carrara and For di Pesco marble topped with Lelievre fabric upholstery and play with notions of functionality and sculpture. www.lachance.paris

Roger | MINOTTI As a site-specific installation, tailor-made to suit its hosting venue based on the specific requests of its commissioning agent, the Roger seating system, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, carries the hallmarks of Minotti’s 2021 Collection which is a modern take on the Mid-Century spirit halfway between Rationalism and Brutalism. A customised base in profiled aluminium with a black coffee-coloured varnished finish, which supports the padded elements and case volumes above, all of which are customizable. www.minotti.it

Davos | VERZELLONI This new sofa line designed by Lievore + Altherr Désile Park brings the comfort of home to office or commercial spaces. Two side rails curve gently and fit into the perimeter of the seat, while the high backrest acts as a protective barrier from looks and noise, preserving the comfort and support of typical of residential sofas. www.verzelloni.it

Ringer | KETTAL This first collaboration between Michael Anastassiades and the Spanish outdoor furniture manufacturer was conceived as a minimal approach to café dining furniture. The title references the traditional Game of Horseshoes, and links to the gesture of the armrest sitting on top of the legs. Cersaie, the influential Italian ceramic and porcelain tradeshow held in Bologna, stormed back in September after a year in pandemic hiatus with a full cadre of participating firms and over 60,000 visitors.

Ceramica Fioranese’s Kintsugi collection reimagines concrete as the cracked enamel surface on Japanese Kintsugi tea pots animated with coloured and patterned fragments from the same pottery. www.fioranese.it

Ceramiche Marca Corona’s Foyer Royal (Green Ama) indicate the kind of exuberant, swirling marbles trending at Cersaie 2021. www.marcacorona.it

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are considered a 60-year lifespan material. As such, identifying annual “trends” seems at odds with such a green classification. But like most design fields, trends reflect new options, often opened by technological advances that simply broaden possibilities in what is accepted design eclecticism. Technical perfection already largely achieved in digital printing has meant that since 2019 the sector has focused extensively on advancing several other technologies, including large

fibreglass reinforced wallpaper slabs; new surface treatments; delicate etching; interior and exterior dry-laying of floors allowing for the replacement and reuse of slabs, and many more advancements. The dominant ceramic trends this season, seen here, all hold attributes of ingenuity and experimentation.

Rococo or Baroque? Exuberant Flow and Fracture

Virtually every marble on the planet, as well as multiple

nonexistent “designer” versions now form the core of Italian tiles. One firm’s representative said their digital files contain well over 1,000 marble and other stone images. At Cersaie 2021, however, many firms offered what I would call Baroque or even Rococo marbles defined by strong colours (often in trending blue and green) and with exaggerated veining, sometimes in decadent gold. These tiles provide a powerful sense of movement and sometimes over-the-top opulence, while conversely, organic flows and swirls often give way to a more fractured chaos.

Tactile Surfaces

With high-definition digital imagery almost perfected, Italian firms have begun pursuing other technologies. In addition to advances in anti-skid surfaces, this includes honing three-dimensional surface treatments. Most dramatic are bold reliefs, often in small- to medium-size tiles that in addition to adding very tactile sculpted

surfaces bring light into play including a temporal dimension as lighting changes through the day. Equally prevalent were collections featuring etched or low relief patterns. Less immediately visible than 3D, these bas relief tiles, scoured with simple lines, points or flora images, produced more subtle plays of light.

Pastels and Neutral Slabs

Many firms boasted lines of often extra-large slabs of monochromatic, warm pastels in colours like sage, mint, moss green, rose, butter, sky blue and so on. Their soft surfaces generate a clay or resin-like feel. Collections of similarly minimalist, neutral concrete in warm grey and beige hues often co-existed with these

colours, “the new look of concrete” as one booth host put it. Whether alone or together these monochromatic panels give rooms a very modernist yet warm and often colourful aesthetic. Conversely, they were also frequently combined as a counterpoint to Cersaie’s abundance of richly detailed “wallpaper” murals.

Murals: Mother Earth and Beyond

In her trend presentation to the media, Cristina Faedi, head of promotional activities at Confindustria Ceramica, identified “mother earth” as the dominate theme in wallpaper murals. This spanned very dense, realistic foliage (for both inside and out), watercolour-like florals and intricate fauna reflecting William Morris’ wallpaper. Murals of faded monochromatic ferns and palm trees recalled a 1940s film noir affect. At the other extreme were examples of the hyper-realism achievable in digitally printed porcelain. Watertight and available with advanced wall systems that offer insulation options, there was a push for tiles as viable exterior cladding.

Nostalgia for 1940s to 1960s wallpapers, which themselves drew on Victorian designs, where frequent and reflected toile, chinoiserie, and damask patterns. However not all murals invoked nature. Geometric graphics often with a strong Deco vibe were common, a trend also found in smaller maiolica-like patchwork tiles but eschewing traditional designs for mid-century patterns. Less common, but some of the most eye-catching, were large slab panels exploiting the free flow of impression and abstract art as inspiration.

Beyond Just Wood

Hyper-realistic porcelain wood floor tiles along with concrete slabs imbedded with pieces or even chips of wood are now well-established and were present again. But this year, several firms pushed the envelope with brightly coloured stressed planks, exaggerated veining or stylized wood plank inserts.

Spirits were high during the first week of October as close to 20,000 professionals in the commercial interior design industry descended upon theMART in Chicago for the return of an in-person NeoCon. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a “future of work” theme figured prominently as showrooms and exhibitors rolled out new product offerings including workplace privacy solutions like tents and pergolas, flooring that incorporates biophilic patterns, plug-andplay smart technology, and dynamic furniture systems ideal for the flexible new office.

Oak Stairs Lockers | ETHNICRAFT An angular composition, designed by Alain van Havre, forms the heart of a design that aims to distance itself from traditional static and immobile surfaces. Inspired by the Modernism architectural movement, the unique shapes the embossed doors help make the handles discreet. www.ethnicraft.com

Space Family | MUTE A new collection of four pod sizes intended for flexible office configurations, the ventilation systems in smaller capacity units exchange the air every 1.5 minutes or around 45 times an hour, while the larger pods exchange air from 24 times per hour to 35 times per hour. Soundproof construction allows everyone to take calls and listen to music without disturbing others, a crucial function in the modern office. www.mute.design

The jury noted, “Suitable for both fixed and mobile (untethered) applications, Honey’s hexagonal shape is not only eye-catching, it contributes to space efficiency.
