A dramatic focal point for any large interior, multiple spun-aluminum shades surround a hollow core in a static orbit. Lily | EUREKA This ceiling suspended luminaire has a flexible 180° vertical pivot and 350° rotation around the vertical axis, controlled by a friction hinge ensuring the selected angle is maintained without slipping. Lambertian-type diffusion is delivered using an optical grade translucid acrylic lens and internal reflector, with outputs of 900 or 1,200 lumens. Designed by Brussels-based Maarten De Ceulaer, this collection is composed of a half circular rounded element of glass and a rounded metal base. Light travels through the glass invisibly and only illuminates the sandblasted rounded edge, creating a glowing halo effect that seems to float in space. Coordinates | FLOS This dramatic lighting collection, originally designed by Michael Anastassiades for New York’s Four Seasons restaurant, features a series of interlocking linear LED luminaires inspired by the mathematical precision of the Cartesian grid. Illuminated and expanded to three dimensions, the luminaire comes in an array of set configurations, including four suspended chandeliers of different sizes and three ceiling-mounted luminaires, and also features a repeatable module that can be suspended or ceiling-mounted, ideally suited to impressive, large-scale installations. www.flos.com

Peggy | MODO LUCE Studio BMB Progetti clearly have a love for basic archetypal shapes — in this case the cone, sphere and disc — and their strict adherence to the rigorous lines and dimensions of their combination are admirable. Available in metal pendant or ceiling versions enhanced by a wide range of colours, there is also a fabric option that turns the disc into a functional element that helps reduce sound reverberation. www.modoluce.com

Keglen | LOUIS POULSEN Born out of a successful collaborating with BIG Ideas (Bjarke Ingels Group’s product division) on the Tirpitz Pendant, created for the Tirpitz Museum in Blåvand, Denmark, this new lamp series was launched with four pendants as the key pieces. Exceedingly simple in design, the diffusion of light is created using a curved, organically shaped glass insert which is built into and adapted to each version of the shade, available in black or white. www.louispoulsen.com

Vollmond | GANTRI

Jefferson | LODES This Venice-based lighting brand was originally known as Studio Italia Design, and to coincide with the rebrand the company has introduced three new lines, the most notable being the Jefferson suspension lamp. Designed by Luca Nichetto in celebration of the company’s 70th anniversary, this reinterpretation of a vortex pattern typical of Bohemian crystal is created through a special pressing technique that imprints details on the crystal surface. Standard sizes include the mini, which consists of two elliptical crystal diffusers joined on the black chrome frame so that when lit, the undulating pattern on the crystal bodies appear to spin. www.lodes.com

Cologne-based industrial designer Peter Otto Vosding drew inspiration for this table lamp from the “unique silhouette cast by a full moon rising over the German Alps” (hence the name: German for “full moon”) and the result is clean and simple: a spherical, exposed diffuser casts a warm glow while supported by a crescent base available in three colours. www.gantri.com

BOMBOM Collection | ROCHE BOBOIS To celebrate the company’s 60th anniversary, Roche Bobois tapped Lisbon-based Joana Vasconcelos to design a line of seating and decorative accessories as the flagship collection of the year. The sofas are clearly the centrepieces: fluid, organic shapes can be reconfigured at will, and a colour scheme of tart, deep shades outlined by black stripes makes one feel they’d be lounging in a field of liquorice allsorts. www.roche-bobois.com

Captain’s Tables | HAMILTON HOLMES This simple yet solid coffee table group is both three-legged and three-materialled: a course grained wooden frame, with a version where the legs are hand painted in a spiral form; a marble top which has recently evolved to include a bullnose edge detail; and hand-woven Danish Cord shelf, all speak to the Hamilton, Ont.-based furniture maker’s love of texture in scalable and contemporary design. www.hamiltonholmes.com

Bell Chair | MAGIS It may look like other stacking chairs, but the real story here is a Konstantin Grcic-designed monobloc chair made entirely from recycled polypropylene obtained from waste generated by Magis’ own furniture production and from the local car industry. The patented material excludes almost all “virgin or new” materials and can be fully recycled after use, making the chair an almost closed material cycle. At just 2.7 kilograms, the chair is 1½ kilos lighter than average plastic chairs, plus Magis has developed a reusable delivery pallet, which can stack up to 24 chairs, all testaments to less material use and waste. www.bell-chair.com

Spalla Bar Stool | STUDIO MUNGE Inspired by the soft curve of a shoulder drop, this stool was originally developed with a metal base for Michelin-starred chef Andrew Carmellini’s Westlight at The William Vale in Brooklyn, then refined multiple times before reaching its final development stage in 2020. Contract grade and available in a variety of colours, with and without a back, Spalla is made in Canada and can be spotted in restaurants including the recently opened Amal Toronto. www.studiomunge.com

Chester Line | POLTRONA FRAU Among the numerous new products in the 2020 Poltrona Frau collection are a couple additions to the large Chester Line family in the form of twoseater curved sofas in versions with or without armrests. A classic since Renzo Frau presented it in 1912, the new interpretations are deconstructed and multiplied, becoming a genuine system of modular sofas with various elements: chaise lounge and armchair, pouf and two corner sofas. Cape Chair | NEA STUDIO Designed by Nina Edward Anker, this chair is part of the Arctic Line, influenced by Anker’s years of living in Norway where she was inspired by organic forms found in the ice and snow. Blend | STELLAR WORKS This Shanghai-based furniture brand unveiled its first collaboration with heavyweight studio Nendo on three distinctive collections this year: Blend, a threelegged bar stool; Frame, a steel frame system; and Kite (shown), a compact armchair designed for particularly narrow commercial and hospitality spaces such as corridors, elevator lobbies, and entrances. These spaces normally mean eliminating a chair’s backrest, but here the backrest is the star and leaning is the implied movement of the user. www.stellarworks.com

CH78 Mama Bear | CARL HANSEN & SON This Danish outfit has been producing Hans J. Wegner furniture for the past 70 years and have just recently added another of his designs to their collection. Nicknamed Mama Bear for its visual identity of embracement, this lounge chair has a solid upholstered frame and angled legs that give it a relaxed and stable look, and the upwards-angled arm rests and curved backrest give it the appearance of a wingback chair. www.carlhansen.com

the return of Milan

Twelve days in late autumn showed the beginnings of a rebirth for the world capital of design.

As the first European city hit hard by COVID-19, some estimates put Milan’s economic losses at €10 billion: a deep hole to climb out of post-pandemic. But doing what Milan does best – investing in quality design – that climb began with Milano Design City, a program where from September 28 to October 10 more than 230 physical and digital events were organized with the participation of all design districts around the city and included exhibitions, showroom openings, new products launches or re-editions and debates. After the bruising of Salone del Mobile’s cancellation in April, it is encouraging to see the city regain its creativity.

GetLucky & Ruff | MOROSO These “sister” armchairs designed by Patricia Urquiola experiment with binary geometry to combine their seat parts and backrests to great effect. Created for dining, the soft backrest of GetLucky wraps around the back like a ribbon before interweaving with the comfortable seat. This dialogue between shapes becomes more solemn and sculptural in Ruff, designed for the contract and hospitality sectors. The wide armrests lie on the sides of the seat section and wrap around it firmly, even though they have just one single joint. Both are available in a variety of fabrics and leathers. www.moroso.it

Taba | MOROSO Swiss/Argentinian designer Alfredo Häberli has created an eight-piece collection that includes a sofa, two armchairs, a bench and four ottomans and is named after an old Argentinian rural game where a cow’s bone is affixed to two metal plates and then thrown. Curl | SALVATORI Taking inspiration from Michelangelo’s remark that he only “chipped away at stone that was in excess,” the Piero Lissoni-designed chaise longue has been “revealed” from a block of natural stone using cutting-edge CAD/CAM technology to push the material to its limits.
