Message from the President I’m delighted to be celebrating the recipients of the 2019 ARIDO Awards. These projects are the very best of the submitted work by ARIDO members and represent the vast scope that members carry out on a regular basis. Over the past 37 years, the annual awards program has become a respected source of recognition to the design industry, celebrating the exceptional work of qualified interior designers, while raising public awareness of the essential role they play in the built environment. I would like to thank the 2019 Awards judges for their keen eyes, design sensibilities, and fortitude. There were 130 projects submitted for judging this year and their perseverance narrowed the winning projects down to 33. These submissions in record numbers continue to demonstrate the high regard that members hold for the Awards program. Interior design is more than aesthetics. Registered interior designers find creative solutions for interior environments that enhance the quality of life of their occupants. The projects in this magazine demonstrate members’ expertise and how interior designers are crucial to building functional, approachable, and creative solutions in the spaces where we live, work, and play. Last year ARIDO’s 2018 ROI project was for BridgeNorth, an organization in York region that supports women and girls who are victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. BridgeNorth provides programs to assist with their departure and transition from the sex industry by offering direct service to women, girls, and families. My firm was the design team that transformed their space into a functional, aesthetically pleasing space that has allowed BridgeNorth to have a dignified and secure location where they can assist more women and girls exit the industry, provide private counselling, and host cooking classes that teach clients the skills to forge their own path. As Interior Designers, we know better than most the impact these spatial changes can have. That is the true power of interior design. Lucia De Biasio, ARIDO ARIDO President 2019/20

2019 ARIDO Awards Judges
The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) is the only self-regulatory organization for interior designers in Ontario. Since its inception in 1934, the Association has played a vital role in the interior design industry by protecting the rights of the interior design profession and regulating the interior design profession in Ontario in the best interests of the public.

By giving legal standing to the designation of Interior Designer, the government bestows on the title a measure of respect and recognizes the high standards of education, training and formal examination that professional interior designers meet. Any person in Ontario who is not a Registered member of ARIDO is guilty of an offense if he or she uses the designation Interior Designer or ARIDO. The more than 1,100 Registered members of ARIDO have expertise in a wide range of sectors including corporate, residential, retail, hospitality, health care and institutional. In total, ARIDO has more than 2,000 Registered, Intern, Educator, and Student members.

The boutique hotel brand Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants is renowned for individually designed hotels that reflect the cities they inhabit. The Saint George Hotel, Kimpton’s only location in Canada, is situated in the heart of Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood. The diversity of the city’s heritage and culture is incorporated via locally designed furniture, original artwork, natural materials, and strong interior architectural forms that pay homage to Toronto’s varied architectural styles and eras. Upon entry, the reception features a marble desk framed by wooden arches, and an adjacent guest lounge designed to feel like a living room. Guest rooms are designed with a residential feel, including a collection of art, custom designed furniture and lighting, seemingly collected over time, offering a contemporary alternative to traditional hotel accommodations.

Hailing from chilly Montreal, Mackage sought to refine its brand experience by further evolving its retail spaces, setting the latest iteration apart from its predecessors. The new concept is designed around the principle of compartmentalization to establish a sense of intimacy within the large volume of space. Each collection becomes a new exhibition in the gallery-like space, punctuated by a series of boxed vignettes set at differing heights to play with scale and create visual interest. Stepping inside each vignette to view a product creates an intimate experience for shoppers. Splashes of black nero marquina marble, oversized mirrors, and brushed bronze and dark metals add a quiet sophistication to the palette. This sophisticated interior appeals to a globalminded, fashion-forward audience and raises the standard for how brands can pay homage to their heritage without relying on traditional “Canadiana� themes.

Over the past twenty three years this Shenzhen supermarket has established a loyal clientele. With the local neighbourhood transforming in demographic, a redesign was a chance to engage a larger customer base. The stylings of a European food market inspired the new design, to appeal to younger and sophisitcated target customers, while the airy market setting could present a wide array of merchandise in a vibrant, engaging way. The layout is inviting from the lease line, where high-demand items grab attention and guide customers into the store. Bold floor patterning draws shoppers in, coupled with graphics of vintage flyers applied to the ceiling. The European ambience is further accentuated by solid surfacing mouldings, marble floor, and herringbone-patterned tiled columns in black and white. Since opening, the market has seen increased foot traffic and exceeded sales targets, demonstrating it is indeed a smart supermarket.

A move to a brand new office space prompted this Winnipeg law firm to establish an environment that would transform the way they conducted business. The new building features high ceilings and a pronounced curve on one side, both posing challenges to establish harmony and preserve sight lines in the space. The top floor lounge is the social hub, with a vaulted 18-foot ceiling that exposes Winnipeg’s skyline. Meeting spaces are located centrally to encourage staff to circulate. Staff and clients are placed out in the open, a signifier of approachability and connection, key aspects of the progressive culture that the firm strives to support. The new office has yielded a great deal of exposure in the industry, and has allowed the firm to give back to the community by hosting networking events and fundraising initiatives for local organizations.

BROWN-BACK HOUSE
New York lofts and industrial warehouses were the client’s inspiration for this new-build family home. The caveat? The space and materials had to stand up to the family’s three growing boys, with a contemporary and refined industrial aesthetic. The kitchen was fit out with professional grade appliances and divided into zones for preparation, storage, and socializing while the open layout encourages its use as the epicentre of the home. A towering three-sided fireplace clad in hot rolled steel connects the kitchen to the family room, decorated with family pictures and cookbooks on one side, and the TV and birch logs on the other. The modern industrial feel continues throughout the basement with hockey room and wine cellar, second floor with a master bedroom retreat, and third floor office.

Like all design projects, this one had its challenges. The owners had vastly different visions of how the house should look and feel. He wanted a very stark, modern space while she was still in love with their current, more traditional home. Finding common ground was paramount. The minimal exterior created by the architect set the tone for the design vocabulary on the interior. The foyer amenities were completely concealed within warm panelled wood walls. A floating stair provided a sense of weightlessness and became a focal point, while ingenious use of ceiling coves and recesses concealed the sources of illumination, so surfaces appeared to glow.

PROJECT
MAJESTIC PIED-À-TERRE The client wanted a visual and functional update to their New York condo, without having to move from their prime location and amneties. They wanted two full bathrooms, where only one had existed, and an updated kitchen. Adding to the typical challenges of a renovation project were the strict building requirements that forbade any disturbance of neighbour’s plumbing or ceilings. The designers documented the existing systems with help from a local team, then developed solutions to complicated routing and concealment. Plumbing and mechanical was tucked away within decorative wall articulations and millwork. A window between the galley kitchen and dining room was equipped with mirrored folding screens which reflect the city views. The final effect is an homage to the beauty and excitement of the New York skyline, against a foreground of calm and warmth.

As a main sponsor for Toronto’s Interior Design Show, hardwood flooring manufacturer PurParket imagined a conceptual space that could connect visitors with the origins of their product as both the feature and backdrop to the space. Visitors to the booth are reminded of the capabilities of wood as a fundamental building material and a material that can elicit an emotional response. To offset the intensity of the show, the booth was designed to shift from public to private; open to intimate. Visitors are offered glimpses of the interior from the outside, encouraged to move from the active show floor to discover what exists within. Greeted by a wall of raw wood logs with integrated product offerings, the hardwood flooring display appears to be revealed from within the tree itself. A flickering fire within the heart of the space invites visitors to gather, sit on log seating, and enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation.

110 YONGE STUDIO – THE TORONTO STUDIO OF PERKINS AND WILL
Developed for an interdisciplinary design studio specializing in sustainability and healthy environments, their new space comprises three main zones: 54 hot desks in the Studio are supported by focus rooms and collaborative space; the adjacent Salon is a reconfigurable space for charrettes, design reviews, and events; while the Lounge is a welcoming entry and the social heart of the office. This change provides a greater range of environments for staff to choose where, when, and how they work. A timeless and natural material palette reflects the client’s commitment to sustainability and material health: every material used was screened for ingredients with known health impacts. Lush plantings and abundant daylight bring nature and calm to the space.

Designed for wellness, flexibility, and inclusion, this architectural firm located near Union Station works for urban and suburban staff. A collaborative approach, combined with feng shui principles, enhanced the relationship between occupants and the natural environment. To offer choice, all workstations are sit/stand, while a variety of interior rooms like the library and communal kitchen can support impromptu meetings, places to work, or host firm parties and community events. A map of Toronto, printed on felt panels for acoustics, is also used to locate current project sites and major developments in the city.

ARTSCAPE DANIELS LAUNCHPAD
Having purchased a 33,000-sq.-ft. space on Toronto’s waterfront, Artscape tasked the design team to create a facility that would inspire creativity and professionalism in equal measure. The project included more than 90 unique rooms with wildly different functional and aesthetic needs, from jewellery to VFX, as well as meeting rooms, classrooms, and Artscape’s offices. Light-filled studios boast professional quality equipment; colourful meeting rooms for networking and professional support; and calm, simple spaces for quiet, focused work. Establishing a central street created a clear north/south path for data cabling, power, lighting and air while linking all work and event spaces together, bookended by Artscape offices at one end, and the Sugar Hall event space at the other.

The design team was tasked with creating a new corporate headquarters that aligned with this fin-tech company’s goals to bring ingenuity, simplicity and humanity to an industry ripe for change. The building’s core became the connection between five floors, each one themed around different activities, from biophilia, use of technology, and collision zones. Flexibility and choice in their work space were prioritized to foster a creative process for all work styles. A reflective glass central block organizes reception, café, security and luggage room areas, resulting in a fluid amenity area for the floor. Saturated zaps of colour are used throughout to contrast with the white envelope for a stimulating emotional response.

CAPITAL ONE OPS CENTRE
A fresh start for Capital One, this 45,000-sqft. contact centre was an opportunity to create a space with their latest office standards and support best practices for a healthy and ergonomic environment. By introducing a blended infrastructure to the floor the design team maximized the shared spaces throughout. The floor plate is flanked by the Capital One Lounge, University, and Plaza as the main destinations of choice. Five neighbourhoods of workstations were broken down by colour coding, with building columns anchoring the wayfinding throughout. Each zone has equal access to meeting space and other shared ameneties, and internal streets are actived by colourful storage lockers and seating alcoves.

GFL sees firsthand the negative effects of throw-away culture, which introduced the principles of quality, durability and a sense of permanence to the overall design. Reception and guest waiting areas are clad in rough sawn eucalyptus; an effect that conjures the utilitarian nature of the business while signaling permanence and durability. The neighbourhood planning strategy ensures a sufficient distribution of focus, huddle, and team meeting rooms throughout the space to support different work settings. The result is a sophisticated workplace that not only celebrates a quotidian activity, but also promotes a culture that calls on its employees to rethink our modern, throw-away culture.

Located in an abandoned 1917 heritage building, this 10,000-sq.-ft. workplace is a lesson in balancing historic patina with modern renewal. The floor plan of the renewed space is split into zones: focused, residential, and collaborative grounded by the original, exposed steel trusses, covered with intumescent paint. The building’s original details are celebrated throughout the space. Existing marble mosaic, terrazzo floors, exquisite plaster ceiling mouldings and speed tile were salvaged and restored where possible. They become an important backdrop to this modern, highly functional office.

SAMSUNG SOLUTIONS CENTRE
The moment visitors step off the elevator at Samsung’s new Washinton D.C. office, they are completely immersed in the electronics brand. Walls in the elevator bank are clad in mirrored blue glass while ultra-thin LED screens line the ceiling, immersing visitors in a digital narrative. A reception plinth is backed by a VIP lab that hosts their latest tech for invite-only demos. Hidden in plain sight and camoflauged with a dichroic film, this jewel box is recessed into a transparent VR/Demo lab used for both product development and customer demos. A loop of Samsung’s past, present and future unfolds along the perimeter of the space, guiding visitors from a smart kitchen with their ultra modern appliances into the workplace of the future, equipped with their latest tech tools.

Step into The Lobby, Tridel’s new corporate head office and design studio. The 8,000-sq.ft. space successfully pays tribute to the brand’s long-standing legacy as one of the top developers in Canada. A marble reception area welcomes visitors, balanced by a spectacular glass and marble staircaise. Originally angled towards the opposite side, the new configuration of the stair creates an alluring first impression, enticing visitors to the second floor showroom, a flexible design playground that delights both client and design consultant alike.

Workplace One is a co-working office space that has redefined the way people interact, collaborate, and network by creating a platform for start-ups to literally work alongside one another. The client wanted to establish a deep connection with the surrounding neighbourhood, while reinforcing an indoor/outdoor connection. Biophilic design was incorporated via extensive greenery on walls, ceilings and freestanding elements. With full height glass partitions incorporated into all office spaces, access to natural light was maximized, resolving any primary lighting concerns.

DR. DEREK T. FORD – PLASTIC SURGERY OFFICE Dr. Ford’s new plastic surgery clinic needed to reflect his reputation as a preeminent plastic surgeon that is always working hard to remain on the leading edge of aesthetic medicine. Materials needed to be durable yet sophisticated to reflect his established practise. Crisp white walls, ceilings, and floors provide contrast to the natural warmth of walnut veneer on walls, doors, and millwork. Lighting and an integrated sound system were strategically nestled within a compact ceiling plenum, finished discretely in a smooth drywall. Glass partitions with sliding doors allow natural light to permeate interior offices and provide a personal connection between waiting patients and clinic staff. With clever space planning, the design team fit two consultation rooms, a reception area, a private kitchen area for staff and Dr. Ford’s office in the small footprint.

OCAD U CO is an executive training studio for companies to engage in facilitated processes from the university’s focus on design thinking and creative problem-solving. The interior is organized into clear, distinguishable zones for reception, studios, admin, AV loans, individual workspaces, and meeting areas. Each section of CO has its own level of public or private exposure and colour while pixelation at different scales connects the desgin with the McCaul Street OCAD building. Floating wood ceilings in studios keep voices isolated within each space and discretely integrate AV, mechanical and lighting. Maximizing flexibility, the largest studios are equipped with operable walls, enabling the studios to be combined with the open collaboration zone, transforming it into a single 160-ft.-long event space.

The original library, built in 1971, was in a poor state of repair and not meeting the local community’s growing needs. The new design needed to address inclusivity, accessibility, public safety, and access to light and nature. Three interior courtyards were created to encourage acoustic separation while easing visual separation. Multi-hued terracotta ribs along the new building’s façade also line the courtyard’s walls, while a folding timber roof plays off their texture and colour. Dark carpeting and white oak millwork are animated in bright furniture, light fixtures, and a striking wall mural at the front desk. By creating architecture that puts users first, Albion Library has become a place of transition for newcomers and a neutral space for the community.

88 SCOTT CONDOMINIUM
This 58-storey condominium, situated at the intersection of Toronto’s landmark financial and heritage St. Lawrence Market districts, was an opportunity to create a stand-out, luxury residence. Natural materials speak to Canada’s history of drawing from the land to craft the environment. The experience begins in the 1,500-sq.-ft. lobby where dark and light mingle, creating a dramatic statement. Combining textured and polished stone backgrounds with walnut paneled walls and screens creates a warm entrance, encouraging lounging in the Euro-inspired seating.

The client, a prominent building developer with properties across Canada, wanted to push the limits on amenity offerings for the sales centre of a new entertainment district high-rise. Instead of a reception desk at the entry, the design team placed an elongated marble coffee bar, a twelve screen media wall, and incorporated lifestyle photography rather than traditional marketing assets, to achieve a sophisticated retail boutique flavour. The design captures the look and feel of a trendy VIP destination: casual, yet sophisticated with materials that are eclectic, while dramatic; sumptuous velvet and leather upholstered furniture; rich woods; and bold black accents.

Situated in the former Trump Hotel, the project brief was to remove associations with its previous ownership while introducing Canadians to the historic St. Regis brand. Drawing inspiration from Canada’s history as manufacturers of distilled whisky and spirits, the space recalls the warm amber tones of whisky and the sparkle of refracted light through a cut crystal glass. The restaurant shimmers and glows, and at its focal point is a 30-ft.-long marble bar, inspired by grand hotel bars, that sets the stage for a dramatic yet intimate design. An array of customdesigned elements each convey quiet luxury, from the playful fringed lamps to the sweeping crystal chandeliers.

CLAY RESTAURANT AT THE GARDINER MUSEUM
With the existing restaurant at the Gardiner Museum relatively unknown, the new restaurant partner indicated they needed the flexibility of a multi-purpose venue with the aesthetic of a fixed-in-place restaurant. The new design reconnects the space to the museum’s focus while respecting the building’s architectural features. The minerals of clay tell the colour story in rich terracotta hues, stoneware neutrals, and vibrant porcelain whites. Furniture and custom elements were strategically selected for optimization of storage space and efficiency of the teardown process. The end result is a remarkably versatile space that does not compromise on design.

Ko–jin, Momofuku’s take on a steakhouse, is all about treating guests to the sensations of an open flame grill. The interiors complement the restaurant’s Colombian influenced menu with an open layout inspired by the buzz of izakayas, mixing with the energy of parrillas (open flame grills from South America). A rich material palette of dark walnut, oxblood red leather, and brass detailing contrasts with signature elements such as Token chairs, Roll and Hill chandeliers, subtle neon lighting, and a Momofuku peach at the entrance maintain consistency with other locations.

PZA Restaurant is a one-of-a-kind authentic Italian restaurant, unique to the burgeoning culinary scene north of Toronto. Using food and pop culture to retell the story of traditional Italian values, PZA maintains the signature relaxed but lively atmosphere that assembles all generations of family while staying true to the brand. Bold artistic gestures, earthy textures, rich warm shades and materials are mixed with tasteful Italian references. The unique 112-piece paddle installation inspired by the lifecycle of a pizza peel hangs overhead, while a whimsical 25-ft. mural with Sophia Loren demonstrates the iconic Hollywood actress’s significance as a symbol of Italian food and culture.

VIRTUOUS PIE UBC
Nestled in the heart of the University of British Columbia campus, Vancouver-based Virtuous Pie is an elevated fast-casual, plant-based restaurant designed to reflect its natural and cultural surroundings. Pizza-making is front and centre with an open kitchen and exposed pizza oven anchoring the 2,000-sq.-ft. interior. Materials and finishes play a critical role in emphasizing the values of the brand. Charred black wood above the counters is an environmentally sensitive PaperStone finish made of pressed paper. Terrazzo stone flooring references sandy beaches while the use of brass, wood, concrete, and greenery combine to create a layered environment that matches the community.

This former hotel turned student residence is a newer model of post-secondary student accommodation in Canada. It addresses the need for improved living standards and affordable housing for students while removing the burden of managing their operation from institutions. Two main circulation routes were created to tie all the ground floor program elements together clearly. Moving the hotel’s restaurant from the front to become a dining hall at the rear instigates social interaction, pulling students from the entrance, lounges, and tower elevators. Just beyond the main desk is an open, unexpected feature to support collegiality: a multi-tiered “mountain” is a hang-out spot, inspired by Mount Royal, rising above the downtown campus.

Revitalisation that goes beyond preservation was the client’s goal for this adaptive reuse project that involved renovating a building to create the office of their dreams. A former leather tannery built in 1853, Deloitte’s new office in the heart of Kitchener-Waterloo has embedded the company into the local tech community. The design team re-imagined the long shoebox building by bisecting it with an atrium that aligns with the historically designated smokestack. Two sunken gardens were dug to transform the dirt-floor basement into useable space. The windows on the main level were enlarged, new skylights added, and a stair was built to connect the two floors. The office offers choice, balance and focus with quiet rooms and pods, phone rooms, and height-adjustable workstations, as well as group work settings, small and large enclosed meeting rooms and collaborative areas.

CROWN LOBBY SCREEN 5255 YONGE STREET
In order to inject fresh vitality into their 1980s-style office tower, the client wanted to redesign their lobby. Originally, the space felt bland and cramped. Opening the lobby with two floors would add volume to the space and define the borders of lobby and elevator bank. Adding this perforated metal screen brings a significant design interest and depth to the space. The forest image represented amplifies the height and conveys a sense of substance and materiality. When accessing the elevator lobby, visitors walk by and experience the changing perspective of the screen.

During this renovation project, the clients sought a solution to separate the kitchen from the dining room. The solution needed to be beautiful regardless of whether it was open or closed, let light pass between the two spaces in an otherwise spare, clean space. The design team installed a track prior to the concrete floor, bracing it in the archway above. Translucent plexiglass panels were ornamented with brass filigree in the centre of each panel, and the team worked out a folding mechanism, hinges and elegant solutions for opening and closing the screens. The final screen recalls detailed, sculptural elements from the 1930s and now differentiates the kitchen as an intimate space, away from the grander, public living, dining room.

Inspired by the client’s history of innovation and problem solving, the design team created a central art installation to ground their redesign of a medical supply company’s head office. The result is a thousand-pound chandelier that adorns the two-storey lobby, suspended dramatically at the centre of the feature stair. Assembled from components of obsolete medical technology, the fixture considers one of today’s biggest challenges in healthcare: how to break the cycle of waste and obsolescence of medical equipment. Components were strung along aircraft cable, chosen for its strength while remaining visible and uninterrupted. LED lighting was incorporated for energy efficiency and highlights each component’s intricate and unique structure. The resulting chandelier moves beyond sustainability and adds new life to otherwise redundant parts.
