Ipswich School music ensembles helped local organisations to raise over £3,500 through concerts during the school year.

At Ipswich School we put care at the heart of our educational ethos.

A concert at St Matthew’s Church in Ipswich raised nearly £1,500 for the church’s ‘Top Up Shop’, which enables people with limited incomes to buy their weekly shop at a highly discounted price of only £2.

Care for the community follows naturally from this core value. We encourage all of our pupils to understand their place in the world and to develop a spirit of service.

At the end of the summer term, the Big Band joined forces with the Ipswich Musicians’ Union Big Band to put on a jazz double bill that raised more than £2,000 to maintain St Peter’s Church in Copdock.

These partnerships and activities enrich the experience of all at Ipswich School - pupils, staff, alumni and parents - and directly contribute to the broad education which we value so highly.

We share resources and projects with other schools, local organisations and communities in many different ways - through teaching, as part of our co-curriculum, sharing our facilities and through fundraising.

In this Community Impact Report we summarise some of the activities which took place during our 2022-23 school year.

Our local community Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Sensory performance for local school

Our students provided 1,521 hours of voluntary service through the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme in the last school year, with a social value of £7,315.

Activities undertaken included coaching younger sports teams, working in a library or charity shop, being a marshall on Parkrun events, looking after pensioners in small villages, carrying out litter picks, running a website for a charity and helping primary schools.

Our Thursday afternoon drama activity group visited The Bridge School in Ipswich with a sensory performance of Treasure Island. The Bridge School is for pupils with severe learning challenges and complex needs.

The school said afterwards: “The children really enjoyed interacting with the performance and the performers did a fantastic job sharing such thoughtful resources! Thank you, Ipswich School.”

100 trees planted at Rushmere Members of the Eco Team Thursday afternoon activity planted over 100 trees at Ipswich School Sports Centre, Rushmere.

This was as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy - a unique nationwide tree planting initiative created to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

Mrs Beasant, activity leader, said: “We are really proud of the Eco Team’s involvement in planting over 100 commemorative trees that will mature long into the future for people at Rushmere to enjoy and to help in the fight against climate change.”

Ipswich School Festival of Music Education Programme During the annual Festival of Music, children have the chance to learn from some of the world’s top musicians and to hear live music at its best. The education programme has involved over 6,000 children and young people since it started 12 years ago.

They have taken part in workshops, listened

to concerts, received valuable instruction in small masterclasses and been able to perform alongside world class acts in the festival concerts.

Our Education Programme encourages young people to make music, improving their musical skills, imagination and creativity.

Singing Workshop with London Community Gospel Choir

Minibus Use Sidegate, Gorseland, Springfield, St Johns, Colneis, Lawford, Broke Hall and Hanford Hall primary schools received help with minibus transport and drivers. Local organisations and charities helped with transport include: BEAM, Suffolk Community Foundation, Volunteering Matters and South Street Kids.

During the school summer holidays, Ipswich School staff used our minibuses to transport groups of refugees to East Anglian tourist destinations through our links with Suffolk Refugee Support We transported 806 passengers on 46 different journeys, totalling 250 hours.

schools and charities helped with transport Brazilian Beats Members of the London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC) led a workshop for singers from the local area, and members of the Ipswich School Chapel Choir.

Those involved learnt more about the heritage of Gospel singing, and prepared

songs which they performed in the evening concert alongside LCGC. Choir members also ran lively and enjoyable singing workshops for primary school children and a workshop with Ipswich School Chapel Choir.

Suffolk Refugee Support Homework Club We hold a weekly Homework Club for refugee children in our Sixth Form Centre.

From conversational English, homework or GCSE and A Level support, our staff and student volunteers help in any way they can and find the sessions highly rewarding.

Over 40 young people attended Refugee Support homework club

With the help of a leader from ‘Beat Goes On’ and Ipswich School’s Director of Music, children in Year 3 from three local primary schools were invited to take part in a Brazilian music workshop hosted at Ipswich School.

The children recreated a Brazilian carnival sound with an amazing cacophony of samba beats.

Our global community Support for a school in Ukraine MedSoc joins forces with Operation Smile In June, Maria Moore, Chair of Operation Smile UK visited Ipswich School to meet our MedSoc students and formally launch our partnership with the charity.

Operation Smile UK is a charity that specialises in repairing cleft palates, working in more than 30 countries where the healthcare system does not have the resources to carry out the operations.

We are honoured to be the first school in the UK to be involved with the charity.

An amazing 60 boxes of vital supplies for Ukraine were collected in our Christmas appeal.

The first of the boxes left the school on Christmas Day, and arrived 5 days later at the school for disabled children in Kyiv which has links to a teacher at Ipswich School.

The first delivery included 14 boxes of mainly power banks and lights, and were followed by the rest of the boxes which contained other essential supplies such as food and hygiene items and clothing.

A touching video was shared with our community, made by the students and teachers of the school in Kyiv, expressing their gratitude and appreciation for the support that they received from the aid that we collected.

This was followed by a concert and art sale at the end of the March, featuring former and current pupils who joined together to form Camerata and Cantores, an orchestra and choir especially for the event. A choral piece by contemporary Ukrainian composer Natalia Tsupryk was received especially well by the audience.

During the interval there was a sale of art which had been generously donated to be sold, and a short talk on the cause and where the raised funds would be going which really brought the point of the concert home.

The event raised £3260, which has been used to rebuild classrooms at the school, and enable pupils to receive lessons on issues such as the dangers of landmines.

Our fundraising activities Just One Tree

Festival of Music supports The Soldiers’ Charity

In the Michaelmas Term, the school raised money to support Just One Tree, a charity that aims to help institutions such as schools and businesses to plant trees.

By donating to the charity, Just One Tree promises to plant one tree for every pound given, making it possible for the organisations to contribute to the environment where they would otherwise be unable to make an impact.

Our fundraising for this charity meant that our school has been able to plant 3591 trees in Kenya, Haiti and Brazil.

A concert by the British Army Band Colchester, which opened the Festival of Music in October 2022, raised £780 for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. A collection at the end of the concert raised the money, which will be used by the charity to support current and former service people.

Staff Sergeant Andrea Birkett, Bandmaster, British Army Band Colchester said: “We had a great day working with the pupils at Ipswich School and performing for the primary schools in the area. It was a great opportunity to engage with such a thriving local music department, and to have a platform to showcase their hard work in the evening concert. I am so pleased we were able to raise these funds for the ABF,

a charity so closely linked with supporting the armed forces.”

Simon Ferrier from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity added: “We were thrilled that the collaboration between British Army Band Colchester and Ipswich School for the Festival of Music was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who had the chance to take part and all those who attended the performance. On behalf of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity our sincere thanks to everyone involved in raising the fantastic amount of £780 which will go towards supporting the Army family in times of need. We are extremely grateful to the School and the Band for their continued support.”

Ipswich Prep raises over £7,800 for SARS Money for Suffolk Accident Rescue Service was raised through cake sales, raffles, retiring collections at Chapel services, Sports Day events, a sponsored Readathon and sales of an Eco Calendar featuring nature photos taken

SARS provides specialist volunteer responders to assist the East of England Ambulance Service at the scenes of serious medical emergencies or trauma.

Senior School fundraising The Summer Term saw fundraising events organised by Senior School houses, to support a charity of their choice.

Rigaud House’s staff and student karaoke proved a popular end of term diversion in the Loggia, and, along with a football competition, raised £218 for St Elizabeth Hospice.

A lunchtime of torrential rain didn’t dampen the spirits of those in Sherrington House, who moved their Summer Fayre into the Sports Hall. Beat the goalie, a coconut shy, splat the rat and a cake sale, along with a Coronation special edition version of ‘pin the crown on the donkey’, helped to raise £270 for Suffolk MIND.
