The 51st executive committee for NUSPS came into office in mid September and had organized plenty of activities of nature ranging from educational to social ones. Below were the major events that took place, shared in chronological sequence.

1. Youth Alumni Sharing Session 2011 Organised by our Academic Committee, the Youth Alumni Sharing session aimed to expose new pharmacy freshmen to the different routes that a degree in pharmacy open them to. Alumni were invited to share with participants on their undergraduate life in NUS Pharmacy, examinations survival tips and how their pharmacy education has prepared and equipped them for the job they perform now in each of their domains.

NUS Pharmacy will also be running its next slate of Know Your Medicines, Get it Right in year 2012.

3. Xperience Pharmacy Camp 2011 An annual major event that NUSPS organizes will be Xperience Pharmacy Camp. It is an event organized for the pre-university students to give them an insight to our Pharmacy undergraduate course and to heighten the awareness of the Pharmacy profession to the public. During this camp, students will go through a series of lab sessions similar to that of our undergraduates.

first experience of compounding and formulating, a core skill of a pharmacist.

Apart from lab sessions, talks by various pharmacy professionals in all different domains (regulatory affairs, clinical pharmacist, community pharmacist, research pharmacist etc) are also factored in so that participants can get a primary account of the different paths the degree of pharmacy opens them to. Participants also get an insight to the healthcare practices and concerns in Singapore.

Related to elementary pharmacy knowledge, which participants will glean from educational workshops, are incorporated into the camp to enhance students’ critical thinking. This year, students were taught on drug-drug adverse interactions and they had to apply the knowledge to solve a crime scenario given to them in which a patient on polypharmacy had died.

All in all, it has been an eventful year once again for NUSPS. To give members of APRO a glimpse of the events NUSPS will hold in the coming year, below are the major events that we will be partaking in the first quarter of 2012: 1. Patient Counselling Event 2. Pharmaceutical Students’ Association of Taiwan (PSATW), is composed of nearly 4.000 pharmacy students from seven schools of pharmacy around Taiwan. PSATW is a legally established, independent, non-political, non-profit, national student organization, aimed to strengthen the connections between pharmacy students not only in Taiwan but also with the international pharmacy students.

International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation

Education and practice activity PCE aims to demonstrate the importance of pharmacy counselling skills, and to increase awareness to the public of the role of pharmacists as educators.

The 3rd PCE generated a lot of interest amongst the students and as a result, we have introduced the system of each pharmacy school hosting their own PCE opportunity, with the winner of each school competing against other winners at a national level.

Public Health Activities HIV/AIDS PSA-TW works with each pharmacy school to raise donations and awareness about AIDS/ HIV and all profits raised are donated to relevant organisations. thus, PSA-TW not only educates the community over the issue but also takes definite measures.

The Annual Congress /LIT/JTC At our annual congress, we invited experts from the fields of pharmacy and public health to share their experiences and the current new trends in pharmacy.

We also conducted LIT sessions, with the aims of training interested pharmacy students into leadership positions. JTC is a training programme, like LIT, in cooperation with medical students, to help strengthen our relationship.

Tobacco Alert For World Free Tobacco Day, free activities are performed during the week throughout 7 different pharmacy schools.

Our service team lead by our teachers offer free counselling to current smokers in public areas.

The Service Team Seven colleges of pharmacy in Taiwan have their volunteer team doing health-caring services to the elders and people in need. What’s more, we also advocate the correct idea of using medication and anti drug abuse to young children at schools or orphanage.

The Service TeamStudent Exchange Programmee In 2011, 18 International students visited Taiwan by SEP, and 10 Taiwanese students travelled abroad to study pharmacy. PSA-TW promotes SEP and its associated activities via facebook, and also highlights the beauty of Taiwan.

The Pharmacy Cup We also have the Pharmacy Cup to allow pharmacy students to come together in a friendly sporting environment by participating in sports such as swimming, basketball, baseball etc. The Pharmacy Cup aims to improve the co-operation and strengthen the connection between all pharmacy students across the different schools.

The non-govermental organizations exhibition Love from Taiwan NGO, Passion and Actions. The exhibition gathered all of NGO together to share our activities and experience.

South Korea by: HYUN JU LEE Description of the activity Background : Firstly, the executives of KNAPS are planning to host a “National congress on upcoming February.

We were discussing it for quite a long time on the internet, and we needed to meet each other face to face.

Secondly, On 2nd of Oct, we got the first regular gathering of KNAPS to welcome new people and celebrate for the new executives. After that, we started to recruit new team members. KNAPS has 3 teams; teams for National Affair, International Affair, and Student Exchange. After the recruitment, each group has now 4, 7, 9 members. So it is needed to get new teammates together and make plans.

Aims: Gathering for the new team members (3 teams each & total KNAPS) & Discussing and Planning briefly for the National Congress on Feb. Results: We had a really good time introducing ourselves and getting to know each other very much. Each team got together before the entire gathering starts, and talked about their team’s visions and plans. We also discussed the currently important pharmaceutical issues together, and exchanged our opinions on what exactly we have to plan for the National Congress.

Comments and/or ideas arising from the activity: Actually, as this concept of “National Congress” is brand-new to our organization, so we have to do all our best, and prepare many things. All the activities and campaigns we will do for the whole National Congress hasn’t been decided specifically yet, so the executives of KNAPS will keep discussing and preparing for it through the internet once a week. We will make posters & advertisements to let other pharmaceutical students know about KNAPS more.

Briefly saying, for the National Congress which will be 3 days-long, we will do the patient counciling, invite lecturers who might give students advices and visions, make study groups and discuss certain important topics on pharmaceutics, and do some social activities.

Forum for Farmacy - Nepal by: Vijay Hamal

Blood donation program: As per program schedule of Forum for Pharmacy (FoP), the Blood Donation Program was successfully held on 6th of June, 2011. B.Pharm 1st year students under FoP took the responsibility of the program. The program was held at the basement in the C.V Raman Auditorium, Kathmandu University (KU), under the collaboration of the Banepa Red Cross Society. Main purpose of program was to help the Red Cross gather blood and thereby aid in the supply of increasing blood demands at the hospitals. A total of 151 donors donated their blood. Most of the donors were the Undergraduate students from different faculties studying in Kathmandu University. Few faculty members and some local people also contributed to the program.

The World AIDS Day: On the occasion of WORLD AIDS DAY (2011), Forum for Pharmacy (FoP), KU, organized a ribbon distribution program and fund collection program for the health camp. B.Pharm 3rd year students under FoP took the responsibility of the program. The program was organized as per the annual health calendar of International Pharmaceutical Students Federation. Program was performed in KU premises and Banepa.

Health Camp: As per the annual programme of Forum for Pharmacy (FoP), Free Health Camp was organized this year in Saping village of Kavre district on 11th of June, 2011(Jestha 28, 2068). The theme for this year’s Health Camp was free health check up and frees dispensing of the drugs. Keeping that on mind the 3rd year Pharmacy students, under the Forum for Pharmacy (Fop), Kathmandu University in collaboration with Dhulikhel hospital and Samajik Jagaran Manch organized a one day free health check up along with free medicine dispensing and counseling with the Dhulikhel hospital doctors in the respective place.

Medicines for the camp were collected from nine different pharmaceutical companies, and District Health Office, Dhulikhel. 6 doctors of different specialty (1- Eye, 1- ENT, 1- Gynae/ Obs, 3- General Medicine) participated from Dhulikhel Hospital - Kathmandu University Teaching Hospital. A total of 220 people had their health checked, ailments diagnosed, free medicines dispensed along with proper counseling. FoP has been performing such health related awareness programs in the past and is dedicated to organize such program in future too.

World Diabetes Day: As the annual programme of Forum of Pharmacy (FoP), free diabetes camp was organized this year in Sadabahar hospital, khadichaur on 19th Nov, 2011. The theme of the camp is for free diabetic screening of patients along with free medicine distribution. Medicines for the camp were collected from Deurali Janta Private Limited (DJPL). B.Pharm 2nd year and 3rd year students under FoP took the responsibility of the program. Program was conducted in collaboration with Sadabahar hospital, khadichaur hospital. A total of 76 people had their health checked. FoP has been performing such health related awareness programs in the past and is dedicated to organize such program in future too.

Pharmacy Weekend 2011 University of Indonesia or you can call it PharWeek UI is an international event organized by Pharmacy University of Indonesia. The chairperson of PharWeek UI 2011 is Exaudi Ebennezer.

This event was held on september 9th to 11st 2011 in Depok. For this year, the theme is about “Future of Drug Discovery”. The theme has a correlation with the current drug development, where scientists and pharmacists are struggling to find new drugs and doing development for treating various diseases, especially for cancer, in order to achieve the best medical treatment and increase the life expentancy of many people.

On the first day of this event, we held an international symposium. We invited five great speakers from Indonesia, India, and Australia. The first session was a triggering session, where this session was delivered by Prof.Dr.Yahdiana Harahap M.S., Head of Departement Pharmacy in University of Indonesia. In this session, the participants obtain information about cancer at glance (brief introduction about carcinogenesis, cancer epidemiology in Indonesia compared to other countries, and the difficulties to cure cancer). The second session was a focus group discussion, where they would got information and they could discuss it about another solutions which have potencies in the future as the new and better cancer treatments. The first focus group was delivered by Dr.Gaurang Joshi, the President of International Psioriasis Foundation, Atharya Multispeciality Ayurveda Hospital Rajkot Area, India and Dr.Abdul Mun’im M.Si.Apt. They informed about “Ayurveda Method and Herbal Drugs a Potential Anti-cancer Agents.” The second focus group was deliverd by Prof.Paul W Groundwater, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) Faculty of Pharmacy, The University of Sydney.

He informed about the Advance of Chemically Synthesized Anti-cancer Agents. And from the third focus

was delivered by Dr.Greg R.Monteith, Associate Professor in School of Pharmacy University of Queensland, Australia.

He informed about The Prospective of Molecular Targeted Cancer Therapy.

On the second day, there were BA-BE workshop where the event was held over two days. In this workshop, the Head and Staff of the Bioavailability and Bioequivalence Laboratory gives a training in Bioavailibility and Bioequivalency test on behalf of biological matrix aimed for pharmacy industries and research centers on bioanalysis and medicine.

Besides workshop, we held a competition for the participants who are very interested to join. The competition that we held was Patient Counseling Event and Drug Modelling Competition. I believe that most of you guys know and do the Patient Counseling Event at your hometown. So, now let me introduce about Drug Modelling Competition. Drug Modelling Competition is a competition on the modification activity of chemical substances in medicinal preparations, collected in the form of a software file that has been prescribed format and file name by the committee. The theme is about Cardiovascular. It aims to modify the contents of materials and medicines for the treatment of cardiovascular interactions.

And at last but not least, on the last day of the event we held a Community Service at Ciganjur, South Jakarta. Community Service is an activity which consists of medical examination, followed on the results of the examination. In this activity, we divided in to four posts. The first post is an introduction to Lifestyle and Cancer itself. It was delivered by our lectures and students of Pharmacy University of Indonesia. The second post, there was a test for Blood Pressure and Blood sugar and they could do it for free. The third post was a consultation post, where they could ask the experties about their health problems or how to take medication properly.

And the last post was about the bestowal of vitamins.

After we done the community service, we do campaign activities delivered by the students of Pharmacy University of Indonesia, conducted by distributing leaflets to homes around the UI community residents, as well as brief presentations about cancer and prevention efforts. It was a major success, all the people around was very enthusiastic satisfied with the all the information that we gave to them.

BEM KEMAFAR Padjadjaran University by: Indah Saraswati

Training for Delegation November 19, 2011 – Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Padjadjaran It was a perfect moment to promote about every pharmaceutical and healthcare organization that BEM KEMAFAR UNPAD involved in to the new students year 2011. Since UNPAD is a member of IPSF, ISMAFARSI, and JMKI-a national healthcare profession organization, we needed people to run the project promoted by each of this organization. We introduced about what is IPSF, ISMAFARSI, and JMKI. For IPSF, We shared about our experience attending APPS and Congress, having incoming SEP students, and doing our annual projects. Almost 140 students came and now we got 40 new members to accomplish our IPSF annual projects.

HIV/AIDS Day December 1st, 2011 – Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Padjadjaran We put up 4 posters to remind people about HIV/AIDS and spread 400 red little ribbons to the students around the campus to increase our solidarity for those who live with HIV/AIDS. We didn’t really do a big scale campaign because most of the student are busy with their own classes and schedule.

One Day Fun With IPSF – Welcome Party December 19, 2011 – BOSA café, Jatinangor It was our last event of the year. We invited all of the members to have fun at the end of the term and last but not least to elected our new CP for BEM KEMAFAR UNPAD 2012. We had lunch together, played games, and the important thing was also to welcome the new members and keep them all as our family. About 43 people came, for the election we got Putu Indah Saraswati as our new CP 2012 and Dinar Azzahra as our LEO 2012.

CP Profile Hello my dear IPSF families, introduce my name’s Indah Saraswati, I am the CP of IPSF BEM KEMAFAR UNPAD period 2011-2012. I’m in my second years of my study. I was elected in late December 2011 and newly appointed officially in January 2012. This is my first experience become the CP for my association. I had previously believed to be the External Project Officer when the leadership of Putri Wulansari (ex-CP IPSF BEM KEMAFAR 2010-2011). My other experience was, I participated in the IPSF world congress in Thailand in 2011 ago. There, I got a lot of experiences that made me know more about this organization. Other than that, I get a lot of very good friends from various countries around the world. I am very grateful for the trust given to me as a CP for my association. I hope 1 year to go will be another great experience to work with IPSF families. warm regards

HMF ‘ARS PRAEPARANDI’ Institut Teknologi Bandung by: Wyla

September to November 2011 “Gerakan Perlindungan Perokok Pasif ” This is the project about “Movement of Secondhand Smoker Protection”. Aim of this project was to make an awareness and offer courage for the secondhand smoker in our campus to speak up regarding their rights in disallowing smokers to smoke in their environment.

We also encouraged passive smokers by promoting advertisements and bulletins throughout the public facilities of the campus highlighting the risks of being a smoker as well as being a passive smoker. Although this last November we have elected the new new president (and also CP, SEO, Treasurer et cetera) in our oganisation, this program will still be continued.

November 13th, 19th, and 20th “Farmadays” The collaboration event with main theme “Natural Health for a Better Life” was made for all students on campus including pharmacy students, as well as members of the local community. The main event was divided into four, there are; Beauty Class, Patient Counseling Event, Workshop about Dietary and Health, and Pharmaceutical Exhibiton. The Beauty Class event was held on 13th November 2011, with participants being from the community as well as pharmacy students. Beauty class was sponsored by Body Shop and Wardah, the most popular cosmetic company in Indonesia. PCE was held in 19th – 20th November and the report have already sent to CP- and IPSF VIP group. Pharmaceutical Exhibition was the main event it showed how pharmacists interact and educate members of the community. In the exhibition we also held some masker-making, held a demonstration on balsams and inhalation which stirred up curiosity amongst the audience about the pharmacy profession.

“January – July : Pharmacy goes to village” This is the community development and community service from HMF ‘Ars Praeparandi’ ITB. This event took place in Kidang Pananjung Village, a suburban village with a population of approxiamtely 1000, with the majority of the villagers being farmers, staple food traders and labourers.

We conducted a survey with the results showing that the monthly average income per family being $115US, and each family averaging 2 adults and 3 children. Some of the villagers also live with their parents, cousins, and other relatives. The database of unemployed people (the latest is from July apro.ipsf.org

Our aim of this project was to increase the student’s awareness in community service, and to also increase awareness amongst the villagers about their own health.We also answered any questions the villagers had and provided further counselling advice regarding their medications, since healthcare workers in the area were limited to a couple per neighbourhood.

Car Free Day – Public Health Awareness Car Free Day is an weekly event held on Sunday’s in which Dago Avenue is closed to vehicles from 7-10am. Instead of seeing cars, common sights include seeing pedestrians walking, riding bicycles and even performing gymnastics along the streets. Our aim of this event is to increase people’s awareness about health and medications by providing brochures and hosting campaigns

National Seminar and Patient Counseling Competition : “The Art of Pharmacist’s Counseling” Reality and theory are often different. Counseling methods that have been studied theoretically and ideal is proved difficult to apply in the real world due to various factors inhibiting. Therefore, we need the adjustment between the theoretical and reality so that counseling by pharmacists can be optimal and achieve desired goals.

How could the art of counseling increase patient’s comfort and trust, helping to achive the goals of counseling affectively as well. What are the application of aspects of clinical psychology and application of evidence based practice in counseling? Drug Information Center of Gadjah Mada (PIOGAMA) seeks to discuss this thoroughly at the National Seminar on “The Art of Pharmacist’s Counseling”.

In addition, counseling nationwide competition by PIOGAMA packaged in the “Patient Counseling Competition” in the hope of providing new motivation and encouragement for prospective pharmacists to enhance their ability and apply their knowledge in the future.

Both the participants and the committee were very enthusiastic all day. Everyone listen to the speakers and often send out questions at the seminar. Our target for the participants is fullfilled. We get participants from six different university. The winner both for beginner and advance is from our university, Universitas Gajah Mada.

We really hope that the winners can participate in the next IPSF PCE.
